Ashburton’s troubled new cultural facility is facing yet another hurdle just weeks out from its official opening.

Repair work is being carried out in the upstairs art gallery at the new Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre after a water leak damaged a section of ceiling in a visual gallery room,

which will be used for audio/visual, sound and light exhibitions.

The damage appears to have been caused when a contractor working on the gallery’s faulty air-conditioning system left a tap on while working in the ceiling last week, Ashburton District Council chief executive Andrew Dalziel said yesterday.

Ashburton District Mayor Angus McKay said “three or

four panels” had been taken out of the ceiling when he visited the gallery last Thursday morning.

Despite the damage, Mr McKay said he was confident the art gallery would be a safe place to house artwork.

The gallery’s air-conditioning system has been causing headaches for staff, as units maintaining temperature and humidity

levels in the art gallery continue to fail.

The problem has delayed the relocation of artwork from the old gallery to the new, with gallery staff refusing to move in artwork until a stable temperature has been maintained for three consecutive weeks.

Mr Dalziel told the Guardian yesterday that contractors would have to get into the ceil-

ing to fix the water leak and would then have to re-plaster and re-paint it.

However, ratepayers could breathe a sigh of relief – they won’t be footing the bill for the damage.

Chic Littlewood dies Well-known TV and variety performer Chic Littlewood has died in Auckland. He came to New Zealand from Britain with his wife and their two sons in 1964 and worked as a baker, later getting into theatre and eventually TV, hosting such favourite children’s shows as Chicaboom, which in 1978 became Chic Chat. In 1977 he was the first variety entertainer to be awarded Entertainer of the Year, and in 1979 the Variety Artists Club awarded him a Benny Award. Chic Littlewood also did drama, including a stint on Shortland Street beginning in 1993. He died yesterday morning after a long illness, aged 84.

A Lake Hawea base jumper has completed New Zealand’s biggest base jump, with a vertical drop of almost two kilometres. David Walden, 45, stepped off a rock on the north shoulder of Mt Avalanche in the Mt Aspiring National Park, near Wanaka, two days before Christmas. He dropped 1840m and landed safely four kilometres away, crossing the Bonar Glacier as he flew at terminal velocity of 150km/h. Mr Walden jumped with a wingsuit and landed with the assistance of a parachute.

“You fly down over a glacier, and over a frozen lake, and over a huge waterfall, over a forest, and over tussocks, and you land on one of the beautiful flats, next to a river.”

Otago All Black and Highlander Ben Smith has confirmed his marriage to long-standing partner triathlete and basketballer Katie Menzies in Wanaka on Friday. However, Mr Smith declined to comment further because of an agreement the couple had with a women’s magazine.

It is understood the pair were married at Rippon Vineyard. The couple’s plans to marry have been no secret. They were engaged in 2011, and in July last year told the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly they were planning their wedding. Photographs of Smith’s stag party appeared in the media in December.

Smith has been a stand-out player for the All Blacks at wing and full back since first being selected late in 2009. Mrs Smith claims to still be able to beat Smith to the top of Wanaka’s Mt Iron track.

Up close and personal Researchers are using a remote-controlled jetboat to get close to a powerful and mysterious glacier. University of Canterbury geography researchers have deployed the jet boat to learn more about iceberg calving (where chunks of ice break off) at Tasman Glacier in Aoraki Mt Cook National Park. The jetboat was surveying the terminal face of the glacier, which was too dangerous for regular boats to approach.

Glaciologist Dr Heather Purdie was working with departmental technician Paul Bealing, local guiding company Glacier Explorers and colleagues from the Otago School of Surveying. Dr Purdie said learning about the glacier terminus was important for helping understand the glacier retreat process and was also of interest to the local guiding company. “At times a ramp of ice can extend out from the terminus below the waterline, which can lead to iceberg calving,” she said.

Number of court bailiffs to be slashed

Court bailiff services in Ashburton will be unaffected by sweeping cuts to the sector.

Half of New Zealand’s court bailiffs will be out of work this year, after the Ministry of Justice confirmed their numbers will be slashed.

According to the ministry, changes to the way the bailiff

Mr Dalziel said he could not guarantee there would be no further issues at the gallery, as new buildings always had commissioning periods and “bits and pieces” would come up from time to time.

“We’ve had an issue with the lifts, we’ve had vandalism in terms of the rock thrown through the door, so bits and pieces will turn up all the time,” he said.

“But we’re hopeful that in due course it settles down and just becomes normal maintenance.”

Mr Dalziel said he was “very hopeful” the problem would be fixed and rectified by the time the gallery opened to the public on February 14.

Bailiffs perform a number of roles, including delivering court orders and documents, clamping vehicles and seizing property.

Ministry of Justice collections general manager Jacquelyn Shannon said the changes were driven by an 85 per cent drop in

work that is carried out by bailiffs over the past 12 months.

However, Ashburton services will not be affected by the cuts, as bailiffs at the Ashburton District Court are generally assigned from Christchurch.

The existing structure has seven bailiffs based in Christchurch, with that number dropping to six after the changes come into effect.

According to Ms Shannon, bailiffs were first informed about proposed changes in November 2014, and after a consultation process, they were advised about the final decision on December 18.

Ms Shannon said bailiffs would be a national resource, and although they might be based in certain locations, they would travel as required.

However, former Ashburton bailiff John Burn believed having fewer bailiffs could lead to problems in some areas.

“They’ll lose local content and local knowledge,” he said.

“That’s probably the biggest loss they’ll have.”

Mr Burn said police may also have to “pick up the slack” if there were no bailiffs to do certain jobs.

■ QUEENSTOWN CRASH

Company wants answers A Queenstown jetboat operator says they are “pulling our hair out” trying to find out how one of its boats hit a rock, injuring six tourists, in the second such incident in three months.

A 12-year-old Australian girl remained in hospital last night following Saturday’s crash, in which a boatload of 14 tourists were thrown from the Shotover Jet boat as it came through a narrow twisty canyon on Shotover River, just around 4.30pm.

Five others were injured in the incident - including a honeymooning couple - but have

since been released from hospital.

It is the second such crash for the popular Queenstown jetboating company, following a similar crash in October when one of its boats “came into contact with a rock”. No-one was injured.

Shotover Jet manager Clark Scott said despite two similar crashes within months of each other, such incidents were “really unusual”.

“These situations are certainly not the norm, and if they were we wouldn’t have a business,” he said.

He did not know how two similar crashes had happened within such a short space of time.

“We’re a wee bit in the dark, and we want to know, we want to mitigate it ever happening again,” Mr Scott said, describing it as “very frustrating”.

Mr Scott would not go into detail about the factors that led to the October crash, or what, if any, measures had been taken by the company since. But he said that while rocks have been known to move under the water, “the environment we operate it is predominantly stable”.

“However, we operate in adventure tourism - the very nature does include an element of risk, and that I think is acknowledged and understood by all within the industry,” he said.

“Any responsible operator, and I put ourselves in that grouping, all we can do is minimise that risk by having in place the best, most comprehensive safety, training and maintenance programmes we can, and we believe we have the best in the industry.

“Further to that, the safety of our passengers and our staff is paramount.”

Impaled by branch A holidaymaker cheated death by millimetres after being impaled in the neck by a tree branch.

The 24-year-old man almost came to a grisly end while running after a wayward rugby pass at a friend’s property on Kawau Island, in the Hauraki Gulf, on the Saturday before Christmas.

The man, who asked not to be identified, slipped down a cliff while chasing the ball and his neck was punctured by a branch as he fell.

The branch from a manuka tree lodged 5cm in his neck, just millimetres from his jugular and carotid arteries, before breaking off.

Had it pierced one of the arteries it could have killed him.

“I do feel pretty lucky to be alive,” he said.

In brief Crash victim named Police have released the name of a 44-year-old man killed in a car crash yesterday. He was Glen Cantlon from Fairlie, Canterbury.

Mr Cantlon was in a crash at about 6.50am on Saturday on an unsealed part of School Road about 2km south of Fairlie. The crash happened when Mr Cantlon’s green Ford Falcon ute veered off the road and collided with a ditch.

Man drowns A man drowned after finding himself in difficulty during a swim with his daughter. The 74 year-old Lower Hutt man drowned off Peka Peka Beach on the Kapiti Coast just before 6pm on Saturday. His daughter, 51, managed to swim to shore and was taken to Wellington Hospital in a serious condition. The man was unable to get to shore and disappeared from view. About 20 minutes later, a member of the public located him in water just off the beach and pulled him ashore.

They were unable to revive him and Ambulance staff at the scene confirmed he had died. Police said the death would be reported to the coroner.

Fire warning Farmers and rural householders are being warned about starting fires after a “crazy” seven hours by South Island firefighters tackling small rural blazes yesterday. A spate of grass and bush fires kept firefighters on their toes all day, as the dry conditions across the Canterbury region left large swathes of the countryside tinder-dry. Two reports of separate fires in the Oxford and south Canterbury areas shortly before 12.30pm had the Fire Service scrambling for resources, southern fire communications shift manager Rewai Grace said. “Thankfully they ended up being quite small,” he said.

Remembering the Gallipoli campaign Each year on Anzac Day, New Zealanders and Australians mark the anniversary of the Gallipoli landings where thousands of young men stormed the beaches of the Gallipoli Peninsula during World War One. Over the eight months of the Gallipoli campaign more than 10,000 New Zealand soldiers would fight, 2779 would die. And this year, 100 years later, about 2000 New Zealanders will travel to Turkey to take part in services of commemoration on the beach at Anzac Cove and at the Chanuk Bair cemetery. A ballot was held for relatives of the soldiers who took part in the Gallipoli campaign and among those winning coveted tickets are people from Ashburton. If you are travelling to Anzac Cove this year, the Guardian would like to share the story of your ancestor with its readers.

One hundred years after William Hall Denley Coltman fought at Anzac Cove during the 1915 Gallipoli campaign, his granddaughter Helena Ratten will travel to Turkey to honour a man she never knew.

To mark the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign, more than 2000 New Zealanders will be part of an official party that will attend Anzac Day services at Anzac Cove and later at Chanuk Bair cemetery.

The young man from Waimate was a member of the first echelon of New Zealand soldiers who left New Zealand on October 16, 1914, bound for Alexandria, Egypt.

He was one of the 10,000 New Zealanders who would be shipped to Turkey, to fight in the eight-month long Gallipoli campaign; he was one of the lucky ones who fought and survived.

Like many descendants of Gallipoli campaign soldiers, Helena knew very little about her ancestor. While he died about 22 years after returning home, his war years were a closed book to his family.

Over the years Helena has peeled away some of the mystery surrounding William’s life.

“My mother died last year and we found all this information when we were going through her things. He died when mum was 12 and she would never talk about his war service, but she would have been delighted someone was interested enough to want to know,” she said.

The discovery that her grandfather’s war service included Gallipoli provided

the incentive to apply for a place in the official New Zealand party travelling to the centennial services this year.

Thousands of New Zealanders applied for places, less than 1000 were successful, with the ballot made in descending relationship order – child, grandchild, great grandchild or great, great grandchild.

Those attending pay their own way but are given tickets to the Anzac Cove and Chanuk Bair services. As the soldiers did, they will sleep on the beach overnight, packed into a narrow strip of land along with thousands of others. There will be limited space, a limited number of portaloos and instructions are to take a small pack and to be totally self-sufficient, Helena said.

“I’m just delighted to have been selected. I think it’s such a shame I never knew him, or knew more about him, he was my grandfather and I’m here because of him.

This fight gave us the life we have now but you wonder, do we really appreciate it?”

William was born in Waimate, where his father was a jeweller and later the

town’s mayor. He worked as a clerk for AMP in Waimate and then in Hamilton before joining up and heading to the battlefields of Europe as a 21-year-old. On returning from the war he settled in Hamilton, working as an insurance salesman.

He left New Zealand on October 16, 1914 on the Star of India, as a member of the first expeditionary force, attained

the rank of sergeant and survived the battlefields of Turkey and France before returning home on the Ionic on April 24, 1919. During his years of service he is believed to have been injured twice.

He was one of five sons, but only he and brother Cyril were involved in World War One. Cyril was killed in France on his way to show his brother a photo of his newborn child.

96 years of memories

It is a cruel irony that as someone gets older they have more stories to tell, but sometimes fewer people around to tell them to.

For Ossie Symons of Ashburton, he has lots of friends and family, but his failing sight and hearing can make it hard to interact with people.

“You are going to get lots of pent-up stories. I don’t have good sight and good hearing, and it’s not fashionable to talk to yourself,” he told this reporter.

Those stories range from how an old farm he knew from many years ago today resembled a tourist attraction, how he and fellow servicemen escaped German aircraft fire in World War Two, how he and his late wife Lucy raised six children including a son with cystic fibrosis, and how the Waireka Croquet Club helps its members live into their 90s.

It was just the other day that the 96-year-old visited the Coldstream farm which was formerly owned by his brother-in-law and wife and is today farmed by the couple’s son and his family.

Over 20 years ago there was a woolshed, yards, homestead and little dairy where a few cows were milked to bring in income between selling lambs and wool.

“And it’s enormously different to what it was last time I saw it,” Mr Symons said.

Today the farm was mainly dairy support, there was a tall shelterbelt down the driveway, a new three level “magnificent” home with a patio extending out to the shore of a 15-acre irrigation pond surrounded by palm trees. The pond was full of salmon and trout which were fed daily.

“It’s jolly near a tourist attraction I would think. They (my late brother-in-law and his wife)

would be very proud indeed of what their son and his wife have done.”

Mr Symons was born in Balclutha, one of three children. He said he was mainly brought up by his mother and aunties and uncles, and his Christian-orientated early years saw him attend six schools as he lived in various areas, two of them twice.

He was an underachiever at school, and left at the age of 14.

“Words like geometry and algebra, they are just words to me.”

One of his first jobs was at Castle Rock sheep station. He started off milking cows, and would read the National Geographic and Reader’s Digest magazines one of the ladies at the station shared.

“It was like a whole window on the world for me.”

It was not too long before he was seeing some of that world first hand, as he served with the sixth field ambulance in World War Two. He was a stretcher bearer and served in areas such as Greece, Crete, Syria, El Alamein and Tunisia.

One of his most searing memories was retreating among a convoy of trucks under constant aircraft fire from a sudden German onslaught in Greece.

“It was amazing how few of those trucks got hit.”

In 1952 he bought a 20-acre block at Alford Forest and over the years bought surrounding land so that it grew into over 300 acres, farming 50 dairy cows and 800 sheep.

Most of the land in the initial block was tussock and paddocks which had gone back to gorse, with just one paddock of grass.

There was plenty of work to do to turn it into productive farmland, and that job included cleaning out disease-ridden manuka and selling it for firewood.

The disease had spread along the flats with trees exhibiting a sooty blackness and then dying.

“No-one seemed to know where it came from.”

There were huge “rather fearsome” wetas at the base of the trees.

Mr Symons and wife Lucy had six children.

“Today Lucy and I, we would be told not to marry with both of us carriers of cystic fibrosis. One boy was hit hard with it, he had a jolly good head on his shoulders, but very, very frail health.”

However, Sydney had gone on to live a productive life, becoming an automotive electrician and moving to Queensland where the climate was favourable. He lived a relatively long life for sufferers of the disease, passing away at the age of 49.

Mr Symons and Lucy retired into Ashburton in 1985 and today the Alford Forest farm is operated by son Danny. Lucy passed away in January aged 97.

Mr Symons, a grandad of many who talks about his daughters fussing over him and attends the Park Street Day Centre, still lives in the home they shared together for all those years.

He said anyone who wanted to live to 100 or close to it needed to join the Waireka Croquet Club.

Mrs Symons had served as president, captain, and finally patron.

Mr Symons himself joined and would also play the sport, although would go for the lighter “golf croquet” version.

“It’s a real social club and they are inclined to live on and on and on, those old dears,” he said.

“Dear hearts and gentle people who live and love in my home town,” were words of a song he recalled which he thought summed up club members perfectly.

Kate’s hard work pays off

Years of hard work, dedication and plenty of travelling has paid off in a big way for Ashburton teenager Kate Lloyd.

After building her netball skills for over seven years, the talented teen has been selected for a national programme that identifies New Zealand’s top up-andcoming athletes.

Kate, along with about 350 other aspiring athletes, was chosen to take part in the Pathway to Podium programme.

She was the only person from Mid Canterbury to be selected for the programme.

The programme identifies athletes that have the potential to become a world champion in their chosen field, and encompasses 10 sporting fields.

Athletes picked for the programme have access to workshops, strength and conditioning supports, gym membership, and other specialised support.

For Kate, her selection for Pathway to Podium adds to a long list of impressive sporting achievements.

A talented athlete from a young age, Kate has represented Mid Canterbury in both netball and basketball at various age levels.

She has also been gaining attention on the national stage, trialling for the national basketball side at three different age levels.

However, as Kate has discovered, performing at such a high level does not come without hard work.

“I’m at the gym twice a week, I do my own conditioning work, and I have netball fitness training on Mondays,” she said.

The pressure of combining sport with work and school left the Ashburton College student having to choose between her two favourite sports.

“I could only do one,” she said.

“I didn’t have any balance, I had a part time job as well.”

Netball won out, and the decision has clearly paid off.

Now, as she prepares to take the next step up in her sporting career, the talented teen is looking to combine her love of sports with her academic ambitions. Kate is planning to study at the University of Canterbury next year, and she already has her eye on a sporting scholarship.

“They have a scholarship for student athletes, so I’ll be going for that,” she said.

“I want to keep up with sports.”

‘WOF’ required for gallery Stu Oldham

he opening of the Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre must be accompanied by cast-iron assurances it is entirely fit for purpose after a run of pre-commissioning problems.

It’s just weeks from its official opening and contractors are again working to fix a frustrating problem that oughtn’t have happened in the first place.

Part of an exhibition space ceiling was damaged last week when a tap was left running somewhere near the top-floor gallery. Repairs are ongoing.

The Ashburton District Council has assured ratepayers the damage will be fixed under warranty and that such issues come up as buildings are commissioned.

They certainly do. In the months to now, the building’s lift has failed and the airconditioning units have not consistently met the gallery’s needs.

It is something of a relief that the damage happened before the gallery was absolutely assured the air-conditioning units were “fixed”.

Had the units met expectations, gallery staff may well have moved their collection into the building before the tap was identified as a potential hazard.

The leak happened above the audio/visual exhibition space, so the gallery’s permanent collection – which would be stored and displayed elsewhere – would not have been affected.

But the permanent collection is only part of what the gallery will display and artists may want further assurances that the building is a safe place in which to show their work.

It would be fair to assume the gallery should now expect its landlord to perform a further hazards audit, to eliminate these hazards and to provide a checklist of fixes to its tenants.

The gallery, its supporters and benefactors, and the community need a well-constructed assurance that the building is fit-for-purpose before it opens next month.

The reputational cost of post-opening problems, on top of the unexpected cost of the building, are simply too high.

YOUR VIEW Water leak Will Mayor McKay, or councillors Nelson, McLeod, Totty confirm to the community that approximately 3m² of a room ceiling at the new art gallery has collapsed over the Christmas break due to a component failure that has most likely been caused by a water leak.

In acknowledging this truth, the mayor and councillors need to publicly congratulate, thank, and pay homage to the wisdom of the art gallery curator for her practical caution.

It’s the silly season of politics Nick Lindo

W

e are now approaching the peak of that period of the political year commonly known as the “silly season”.

Some particularly cynical voters might feel the silly season to be a year-round phenomenon as politicians tend to show a lack of sweet, or any other kind, of reason for most of the time.

That, though, might be a trifle unkind as most of our Representatives have a general idea of what they are supposed to be about even though they are liable to fall over their own feet occasionally, or simply drop bricks on them.

However, it is undoubtedly true that until Parliament re-assembles a vacuum exists which has a monotonous habit of being filled by the same early-year rituals.

Chief amongst those would have to be the “whale war” which invariably resumes hostilities about now.

The Japanese fishing industry solemnly announces it will be returning to the Southern Ocean for further “scientific research”, which is the signal for the Shepherds of the Sea, led by their flamboyant American sea dog captain, to let go anchors and embark on yet another sub-zero skirmish.

High-powered rubber duckies will be launched, the whalers will open up with their fullyloaded pressure hoses, positions will be jostled for and the air will be turned blue by “free and frank exchanges of view” when neither side fully understands the language of the other.

This year’s confrontation has a significant extra dimension in that the Japanese have already let it be known they propose to slaughter a huge number of minkes by the beginning of 2016, which will make the Sea Shepherds see red in every sense and inspire them to take even greater risks to prevent such brutal carnage.

The battle lines are thus drawn, the cameras in place, the hoses primed and the early

manoeuvrings under way.

Some noses will undoubtedly be bloodied and damage done to many of the vessels involved but by the end of this latest phase of this endless battle, both sides, as ever, will be certain to claim victory.

Calls will also be made for more government action to put an end to this annual bloodletting on the high seas but the Japanese have shown themselves adept at tiptoeing around international judgements and somehow to continue to manage to sustain their dubious fishing for as long as it suits them.

They seem mainly to rely on the votes of mostly land-locked countries which, strangely perhaps, find themselves with seats on the Whaling Commission and prepared to do a little friendly bargaining with them.

All the above may well make more interesting copy than accounts of Barack and John playing golf in Hawaii though photos of what might seem to outsiders as the unlikely marriage of Labour veteran, Trevor Mallard, and the doyenne of political commentators, Jane Clifton - to whom I constantly look up - could be a rival attraction.

However, the new Mrs Mallard will certainly be interested in the latest instalment of the Southern Ocean saga and when the immediate flush of her nuptials subsides is likely to be back to her incisive best in her Listener column, analysing and dissecting all the latest nautical twists and turns.

A guest at those nuptials was no less a personage than our last prime minister before John Key “usurped” her and she moved off, a bit huffily, to the UN in NewYork.

There Ms Clark took little time to establish her credentials and become a leading candidate for the top job as the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Surprisingly, though, we now hear she is being criticised for throwing her hat in the ring too soon and still two years before there is due to be a change at the top.

I doubt whether that will in any way deflect her from her goal. All being well, at about the time the New Zealand flag, now flying proudly

Hunt for gunman’s girlfriend French forces are hunting for the girlfriend of an Islamist gunman as France mourns 17 dead in three blood-soaked days that shook the country to its core.

After President Francois Hollande warned the threats facing France “weren’t over”, authorities pursued 26-year-old Hayat Boumeddiene, said to be “armed and dangerous”.

She is the partner of Amedy Coulibaly, who was killed when security forces mounted an assault on a Jewish supermarket in eastern Paris where he had taken terrified shoppers hostage.

Coulibaly, who said he was a member of the Islamic State jihadist group, slaughtered four hostages and called friends from the scene urging them to stage further attacks.

He and Boumeddiene are

the prime suspects in the earlier murder of policewoman on Friday just outside the French capital.

Hollande held an emergency meeting of key ministers yesterday, hours after the explosive end to twin sieges that also resulted in the death of two brothers who began the terrorism spree last week when they massacred 12 at the offices of the Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly in Paris.

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said after the meeting that France was keeping the highest possible security alert level for the greater Paris area.

And as France’s bloodiest week in decades drew to a close, the mood began to turn to one of grim reflection, with preparations in full swing for what was already being hailed as a historic march for national uni-

ty, attended by a host of world leaders.

In a sombre address after the sieges, Hollande said: “I call on all the French people to rise up, together, to defend the values of democracy, freedom and pluralism to which we are attached.”

But questions are mounting about how the three men - brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi, and Coulibaly - had slipped through the security net after it emerged that all three were known to the intelligence agencies.

Links also emerged showing the brothers and Coulibaly were close allies and had worked together.

Cherif Kouachi, 32, was a known jihadist who was convicted in 2008 for involvement in a network sending fighters to Iraq.

His brother Said, 34, was known to have travelled to Yemen in 2011, where he received weapons training from AQAP. It also emerged the brothers had been on a US terror watch list “for years”.

Cherif told French TV he was acting on behalf of the Yemen-based al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula while Coulibaly said he was a member of the Islamic State group.

Coulibaly, 32 - who met Kouachi in prison - was sentenced to five years in prison in 2013 for his role in a failed bid to break an Algerian Islamist, Smain Ait Ali Belkacem, out of jail.

Prime Minister Manuel Valls said the carnage the gunmen left in their wake showed there had been “clear failings” in intelligence.

At least 57 dead in fiery Pakistan crash At least 57 people including women and children were killed when their bus crashed into an oil tanker, igniting a fierce blaze in southern Pakistan, officials say.

Authorities fear the death toll could rise, with most of the bodies burnt beyond recognition.

Initial reports yesterday said the oil tanker was travelling in the wrong direction along the dilapidated stretch of road, police said.

“We have received more than 57 dead bodies but the death

toll may rise as most of them are completely burnt and stuck to each other,” Doctor Semi Jamali at Karachi’s Jinnah hospital said.

Jamali said the bodies of at least six children were stuck to women who may have been their mothers, adding it was impossible to separate the remains.

“They are beyond recognition, they can only be identified

by DNA test,” she said.

The overloaded bus, carrying more than 60 passengers, was en route to the town of Shikar-

pur from the southern port city of Karachi when the collision occurred.

Television channels showed live footage from the fiery crash site where rescue workers were busily evacuating dead bodies and any injured.

Earlier, senior police official Rao Muhammad Anwaar said the bus “hit the oil tanker, which according to initial reports was coming in the wrong direction” and caught fire.

Another senior police official, Aamir Shiekh, said an investigation has been launched but it

appeared the poor condition of the single track road also contributed to the cause of the accident.

“We are trying to ascertain if the driver of the oil tanker was solely at fault or whether the bus driver also showed negligence,” Anwaar said.

A few passengers escaped unhurt after they jumped out of the bus windows, police official Muhammad Jan said.

It was the second major fatal crash in Sindh province in less than three months.

Martin Place siege victim Katrina Dawson was struck by a police bullet when officers shot it out with gunman Man Haron Monis at the Lindt Cafe, the police investigation has reportedly revealed. Fairfax media reports that multiple police sources have said Ms Dawson, 38, was struck by police fire that was not a direct shot and possibly a ricochet, when Tactical Operations Unit officers stormed the cafe just after 2am on December 16. The circumstances surrounding the 16-hour Martin Place siege is still the subject of a critical incident investigation by the homicide squad.

Headless bodies found Two headless bodies have been found in a village in Egypt’s restive North Sinai region, police say, the latest in a series of beheadings allegedly carried out by jihadists.

The bodies of two men, believed to be civilians in their 30s, were found near the town of Sheikh Zuweid yesterday. It was not immediately clear who had killed them.

Girl suicide bomber A suicide bomb attack by a girl thought to be as young as 10 in the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri has killed 19 people, police say. Borno State police spokesman Gideon Jubrin said: “Casualty figure: 20 dead and 18 injured, including the female suicide bomber that detonated the improvised explosive device.”

The blast happened near the live chicken section of the Monday Market in the Borno State capital, which was targeted twice in a week by female bombers late last year.

Man surrenders A distraught father of a patient in a Texas hospital has surrendered to police after a standoff. The sheriff’s office for Harris County said the man had surrendered and the hospital, just north of Houston, was no longer under lockdown.

Previously, the police had said the man was holding hostages and could be armed. Later, they said it was not a hostage situation and the father was not armed. Police described the father as “distraught about his son’s medical condition.”

He was with his son in the critical care unit of the Tomball Regional Medical Centre.

Going away made her appreciate home In most corners of the world, an Ashburton person can be found. So the Guardian’s Erin Tasker decided to track some of them down.

This week it’s Katie Matheson, who went to Australia in search of a job in early childhood teaching.

W

hen Katie Matheson first left Ashburton in 2008, she couldn’t wait to get away.

But after six years away, she’s come to realise how good she had it growing up in Ashburton.

For the past year, home for Katie has been Australia’s Gold Coast. She moved to Queensland after completing her early childhood teaching degree in February 2013.

“I started off in Ipswich which was a bit of a culture shock. After working and living there for nine months I decided to make the move to the Gold Coast where I am surrounded by beautiful bushland and beaches,” she said.

When she left New Zealand, Queensland was top of her destination list because there was a high demand for early childhood teachers. But that was just part of it.

“The higher wages and lower living costs were definitely a huge drew for me to move to Australia too,” she said.

Today, she’s a kindergarten teacher and educational leader at a large centre on the Gold Coast.

“Teaching within the early childhood sector here in Australia is vastly different from what it is back in New Zealand.

“I was surprised when first moving here to find that Australia is very much behind New Zealand in regards to the quality of early childhood education.

“Being the only Bachelor qualified staff member in a large centre or 30-plus staff is was quite an adjustment to make.”

She loves what she does, but life in Australia has taken some getting used to.

“One of the worst things about living in Australia is that there are a lot of creatures that bite and there are many deadly creatures to be wary of.

“The humidity here is also something that will take years of adjusting to during the summer months, but on the plus side the winters are blissful.”

When she’s not working she loves meeting up with friends at the many boutique cafes

“I also enjoy taking road trips in the weekend to explore the little nooks and crannies around the Gold Coast.

“I love the national parks and with a few very close it doesn’t take long to get to some beautiful walking tracks where there are some amazing waterfalls and plenty of nature.”

Life in Australia is different from the life she lived growing up in Ashburton.

“I loved growing up in Ashburton. When I first moved away from Ashburton in 2008 I couldn’t wait to get out of the place, but it wasn’t until I lived away for a while that I really started to appreciate the close-knit community that we have.

“The community is a very friendly and warming one where everyone seems to know everyone.

“I love that it is so close to two cities yet wonderfully rural.”

She misses her family, her cats and her friends the most, but she also misses the smaller things.

“I also miss jelly beans, Whittaker’s chocolate, hokey pokey ice cream, Kiwi slang, the rugby, looking out at the Southern Alps and hearing Te Reo Maori.”

The kangaroos aren’t so bad, but Katie Matheson’s struggling with some of the smaller creatures she encounters living in Australia.

A selection of the penguin-shaped rubbish bins that were on clean-up duty in Vietnam.

Penguins spread clean message Vietnam might be an unlikely choice of destination for avid penguin spotters, but a recent trip to South East Asia has shown me that things are not always as they seem.

Animal lovers fear not, this is not a tale of animal cruelty and broiled birds. Instead, it is a lesson in international approaches to spreading the clean green message, and the use of penguins as receptacles to this effect.

In short, it is about penguin rubbish bins.

The first time we saw a little black and white bird with an upturned beak and an empty Fanta bottle protruding from its jaws we thought “Aaaw, how sweet.

What a novel way of dealing with the eyesore of public rubbish bins”.

It was somewhat out of place

Hanne Nielsen found penguins far removed from their normal Antarctic habitat on a recent trip to Vietnam. in the 40 degree heat, but the lush tropical surrounds just made the dichromatic colour scheme all the more noticeable.

We duly deposited our Oreos packet into the penguin’s beak as we exited the park and enjoyed the brief virtuous glow that such an action precipitated.

The second time we came across such a penguin was in the depths of a meandering limestone cave.

While Antarctic species are not known for their spelunking abilities, New Zealand’s own Little Blue Penguins do nest in burrows, so the subterranean location of this critter was understandable.

Most people continued on their way, photographing the gaudily lit stalactites and paying the form of the trash can no heed. I turned my camera in the other direction to capture the happy coincidence, then bought a fresh pack of Oreos at the snack stand by the exit.

The fourth time we saw a penguin rubbish bin we thought that perhaps there had been an extra zero added to an order at some point in the past.

Maybe there was a surplus, so penguin bins were going cheap?

There was a suspicious lack of mammalian or reptilian rubbish receptacles, so either it was an issue of supply and demand, or

someone really didn’t like the polar critters.

We were leaning towards the first option, right up until we visited the mines at Marble Mountain.

There, in the depths of a cave that was rich with geological and social history, we came face to face with a part of the mountain that was no longer mountain shaped at all.

Instead, it boasted two flippers, two webbed feet, and a gaping mouth.

This penguin shaped rubbish bin took the cake, both because of the craftsmanship demonstrated in the carving process and due to the way it blew our

earlier theories out the window.

The penguin shaped rubbish bins weren’t an accident after all. There is something about their compact, oval form and protruding bellies that makes these critters a prime target for urban planners and their waste management division.

If Happy Feet has been sending subliminal ecological messages to a generation of children, who knows what effect these penguin bins will have.

Will they lead to the mass donation of crumpled food packaging to Penguin Rescue Shelters in coming years? If so, our marine birds had better develop a taste for High Fructose Corn Syrup quick-smart.

It’s a long shot, but so was heading to Vietnam on a penguin-themed holiday in the first place.

Cuba welcomes a record three million tourists in 2014

Cuba has welcomed a record three million international visitors in 2014, a rare bit of good news for the moribund economy which counts tourism as one of its mainstays.

“Today we have broken a re-

cord. We have welcomed three million international tourists in 2014, up 5.3 per cent from last year,” state television reported.

Tourism is Cuba’s third largest hard-currency earning pillar, bringing in $US2.5 billion

last year.

Cuban authorities no doubt are hoping that newly improved relations with the United States can help add to the industry’s bottom line.

Last month, the United States

announced that it would end decades of estrangement and normalise relations with Cuba.

Currie claims national title

Braden Currie will look forward to returning to Mount Maunganui next year and moving up one place to the top of the winner’s podium, but for now he’s setting his sights on a third straight Coast to Coast crown next month.

The 27-year-old finished the Port of Tauranga Half Ironman in second on Saturday after taking third spot last year, but as the first Kiwi home Currie claimed the National HalfIronman title.

champion, Australian Craig Alexander, sweat for the win in Mount Maunganui.

Currie exited the water in the top four and set off on the predominantly flat 90km bike.

Eight riders led out together and with tough drafting penalties in place, Currie opted to conserve energy at the rear of the pack.

At the 50km mark he found himself about 50 seconds behind the front-runners due to several riders dropping out to take their penalties.

“For about 10 minutes I punished myself and went hard to ride back up to the front guys again.

“It was all I could do, I knew I couldn’t beat them on the bike,” Currie said.

The run, however, was a different story as Currie scorched away from his rivals to hold a comfortable 30 second lead at the 15km mark.

Then out of nowhere, Alexander dropped the hammer down, caught Currie and the pair slogged it out together for the next 10 minutes before the Australian kicked on.

Alexander finished in 3 hours 48 minutes 03 seconds, with Currie just over a minute behind in 3:49:12 but he beat home ten-time Ironman New Zealand winner Cam Brown

(3:49:34) for the national tile.

“I had a good feeling when I started in the morning and I knew if today was going to be my day then I had to take all the chances.

“I knew it was going to be a tough race and I have never raced someone like Craig (Alexander) before so it was awesome to line up alongside him and push him hard.”

The result shows Currie is in strong form a month out from the Coast to Coast, where he will chase a third straight longest Day title, the first person to do so since Steve Gurney’s run of seven straight wins between 1997 and 2003.

Nicholson could yet return to NZ team

By DaviD Leggat Dumped eventing star Andrew Nicholson could be back in New Zealand’s high performance squad by the middle of this year.

Nicholson, six-time Olympian and winner of multiple four star events in a stellar career, was omitted from the squad named just before Christmas after a bustup with team officials during the World Games in Normandy in August-September.

That led to bizarre speculation that Nicholson might throw his lot in with another country.

However Equestrian Sport New Zealand interim chief executive Vicki Glynn said yesterday it was conceivable English-based Nicholson could be returned to the squad this year.

“It is a possibility,” she said.

“It’s up to Andrew in terms of how things pan out this year, and performances. Those squads are named on the basis

of a whole lot of factors. There are other criteria apart from just performance.”

An internal review was undertaken into the World Games trouble, in which Nicholson was critical of the care shown to his star mount Nereo during the event.

There was a complaint about his behaviour and the result of that review, which Glynn said would not be made public, was no Nicholson when the squad of seven - Mark Todd, Jock

Paget, Jonelle and Tim Price, Lucy Jackson, Caroline Powell and Clarke Johnstone - was named on December 22.

Nicholson had withdrawn from high performance consideration in October.

Asked to confirm Nicholson had since offered to put the disagreement behind them and move forward, Glynn said “that is a question you have to ask him.

“I’d rather not discuss that to be honest”.

Head coach Shane Jones is working with the gold, silver and bronze squads all week, with morning and afternoon sessions at the Ashburton Community and Tinwald pools.

The annual camp is designed to prepare the swimmers for a big few months in the pool, with regional and national events coming up over the next four months, culminating with the National Age Group Championships in Wellington in March.

She rediscovered her fire, but world No.1 Serena Williams is still on the lookout for her best form as she attempts to break a five-year drought by winning the upcoming Australian Open.

Williams was well below her best during this summer’s Hopman Cup campaign, with the 18-time major winner complaining of fatigue during the mixed-teams event.

The 33-year-old lost two of her four singles matches, including a 6-4 6-7 (7-3) 6-1 defeat to world No.5 Agnieszka Radwanska in Saturday’s final. Poland’s team of Radwanska and Jerzy Janowicz won the final 2-1 with Williams destroying a racquet and calling the chair umpire a liar during the heated affair.

Open field ‘still strong’ Heineken Open organisers were left reaching for the positives following the withdrawal of top seed David Ferrer.

Ferrer, a four-time winner of the Auckland event, was victorious at the Qatar Open in Doha overnight defeating Tomas Berdych 6-4, 7-5 in the final, but tweaked his back in the process.

The injury means that Ferrer joins defending champion John Isner (tiredness) and Gael Monfils (personal reasons) on the list of players who have pulled out of the Heineken Open, which starts today.

Given the Australian Open gets under way in Melbourne next Monday, Spain’s Ferrer didn’t want to risk further damage to his back.

Heineken Open tournament director Karl Budge said this week’s event would still have a solid field with Latvian Ernests Gulbis to take over as the new No 1 seed following the withdrawal of Ferrer.

“Injuries are unfortunately a nature of sport and while it’s been a tough one for us this year, we’ve got four players sitting inside the world’s top 20 still participating and that’s

equally the most we’ve ever had,” Budge said.

Aside from world No 13 Gulbis, Roberto Bautista Agut (15), Kevin Anderson (16) and Tommy Robredo (17) are the other leading names ranked inside the world’s top 20 who will play at the Heineken Open.

Fans in Auckland will also catch a glimpse of Ferrer who will be involved in promotional activities this week.

“One thing we can say about David Ferrer is I don’t think we can ever question his loyalty or his passion or his drive for this tournament,” Budge said.

“He’s given us 10 years of impeccable service and he’s come here and fought for every single ball of every match and I know David desperately wants to be playing these tournaments.

“He doesn’t have a record of pulling out of events. He wouldn’t be doing so if it wasn’t absolutely necessary this time around.”

The withdrawal of Ferrer has also caused a few changes to the draw with Robredo, who was previously the fifth seed, moving up to the top line of the draw as the fourth seed.

Williams does it the hard way at ASB Classic

By Kris shannon Venus Williams said she was after a straightforward win in Saturday’s ASB Classic final, free from the drama of last year’s loss in the tournament decider.

But, as a caveat, she added: “Easier said than done.”

And so it proved when Williams played some of her worst tennis of the week before claiming a three-set victory over top seed Caroline Wozniacki to win the 2015 ASB Classic.

Williams rebounded from an underwhelming first set to reverse her fortunes in a domi-

nant second and hold her nerve during a tense third, eventually winning 2-6 6-3 6-3 to atone for a defeat in the 2014 showpiece against Ana Ivanovic.

The American never looked like fulfilling her pre-match wish and doing it the easy way, not after the humbling she received in the first set.

But a player doesn’t win seven grand slams and 46 career titles without remaining composed when faced with adversity.

Williams eventually converting her fourth match point to give this year’s trip to New Zealand a much happier resolution.

Not so long ago, Maria Sharapova felt jinxed at the Brisbane International. However, the fivetime grand slam winner now appears charmed ahead of the Australian Open after clinching a maiden WTA title in Queensland.

A singles ranking that for two years has hovered between 300 and 500 precludes that possibility, while such a record also makes it difficult to earn a decent living doing what he loves. Doubles, though, has opened a door for the 27-yearold. Venus last year enjoyed a breakout season in the discipline, earning US$84,000 and rising to a career-high ranking of 57. In brief Tough day for Bailie Bailie Perriton saved his best until last at the opening round of the National Superbike Series at Ruapuna yesterday. After a drama filled four races in the supersport class, with a stray red flag, two crashes and a mechanical failure, the teenager was able to contest race five, which doubled as the New Zealand GP title race, and came in second. Perriton had a second in race one and eight and the second on the weekend with two DNFs, and will be hoping for some better luck at round two in Timaru this weekend. Andrew Rudd sits fifth in the Superlite class while Lewis Dray is also in fifth in the125GP.

Terranova takes stage Mini maintained their grip on the 2015 Dakar Rally yesterday when their Argentine driver Orlando Terranova claimed the British marque’s seventh stage win out of seven on the Bolivian salt flat of Uyuni. For Terranova this was a third stage win this year and fourth overall. His Mini team-mate Nasser Al-Attiyah is still in command at the top of the overall standings but he had three minutes shaved off his lead by South African Giniel de Villiers, who crossed in sixth. The motorbike and quad competitors had a rest day.

Super Bowl half time Rock singer-songwriter Lenny Kravitz will join pop superstar Katy Perry to perform at halftime of Super Bowl 49 on February 1. Perry was announced in November as the halftime headliner for the NFL championship extravaganza to be held in suburban Phoenix, Arizona.

She confirmed Kravitz would be joining her in a television interview that aired during Saturday’s NFL playoff game between New England and Baltimore. The most recent Super Bowl halftime show featured Bruno Mars and the Chili Peppers and drew a record 111.5 million US TV viewers.

Clean sweep for Christie’s team Ashburton cyclist Jason Christie finished third as his Avanti Racing team claimed a clean sweep in the men’s road race at the elite national road championships in Christchurch yesterday.

Joseph Cooper took the win in a sprint finish of the 183km with Avanti team-mate Tom Davison after a superb break late on the penultimate lap of the 183km race that comprised 12 laps including 10 climbs up the famed Dyers Pass in Cashmere hills.

The pair took advantage of outstanding teamwork to hold

off all challengers with Cooper taking the title from Davison, who was third last year, while Christie broke clear of the select chase group to claim third 30 seconds back after being in the original break.

On Saturday Linda Villumsen finally grabbed her first major victory in New Zealand when she dominated the women’s road race.

Villumsen pushed to the lead on lap three and road solo for more than 80km of the 120km race for the win, a remarkable 7 minutes 49 seconds clear of the field for what is believed to

be the biggest solo win in the recent memory at the national championships.

Villumsen was followed in by Sharlotte Lucas and Karen Fulton out-sprinting Emily Collins for third.

As she said she would, Lauren Ellis made the first move when she opened a 40 second lead on the second of eight laps, setting up the target for her fellow New Zealand representatives Villumsen and Jaime Nielsen to chase.

The pair bridged up and overtook Ellis on the climb up Dyers Pass on lap three but

Nielsen withdrew suddenly from the efforts of the hot conditions at the top of the climb on the next lap.

From that point Villumsen took complete control of the race, increasing the margin on every lap.

It was a tough day at the office for Ellis, only completing three climbs up Dyers Pass after coming third in the time trial on Friday, but her attention is now back on the track with the nationals in Cambridge followed by the World Championships in France in February.

■ BASKETBALL

Breakers in line for minor premiership A successful double-header against Wollongong has ensured the path is paved for the Breakers to once again take out the minor premiership.

The Kiwi club yesterday repeated their efforts from the NSEC on Thursday night to claim a tight and tough road victory (86-84) over the lastplaced Hawks.

And now the Breakers have a realistic shot to repeat what they achieved for three years running and clinch home advantage throughout the playoffs.

The Breakers (16-5) currently have one fewer loss to their names than Cairns (14-6) and Perth (12-6) but, with the former three-time champs having seen more action, the onus is on the Australians to turn their extra games into wins.

Just seven games remain for the Breakers and five of those fixtures are on this side of the Tasman, where they have suffered just one defeat during the current campaign.

Three home clashes in the next three weeks means fatigue will not be a factor and the

Breakers must be considered favourites to finish on top of the heap come the end of February.

Those odds will only increase if they manage to stick with the team-first philosophy that was on display throughout the encounter in Wollongong, with the Breakers sharing the ball well and putting six players into double figures.

The big men were especially effective, save for a quiet night from Alex Pledger.

Mika Vukona, Ekene Ibekwe and Tai Wesley all thrived in

the paint, combining for an efficient 16-27 from the floor, as the starting centre was restricted to five minutes.

Wollongong’s defence enjoyed their best quarter in the third to pull within one.

Just a possession separated the sides before Wollongong locked it up with two minutes to play.

But, with an upset was brewing, Cedric Jackson showed his closing abilities with a driving lay-up, allowing Wesley’s timely steal to virtually seal the victory.

In brief Scorchers hit top spot Perth Scorchers have gone to the top of the Big Bash ladder after Hobart Hurricanes fell short in their run chase at Bellerive Oval yesterday. Batsman Michael Hill’s best Twenty20 score was not enough to secure victory for the the Hobart Hurricanes who finished 18 runs short against the tight bowling of the defending champions. Hobart finished at 7-123 with Yasir Arafat claiming two last-over wickets. Leading competition wicket-taker Jason Behrendorff (2-21 off four overs) again proved valuable for Perth, claiming the scalps of Dunk and Paine. He was named man of the match.

At the conclusion of the training camp the competitive season resumes with the Canterbury Championships at Lake Ruataniwha on Saturday.

They then have the South Island Club Championships at the end of January, with a

month gap until they return to Lake Ruataniwha for the South Islands Secondary Schools’ regatta and then head north to Lake Karapiro for the Nationals Maadi Cup secondary schools’ championships at the end of March.

Allenton re-write the record books

Allenton claimed what could be a record domestic victory beating Methven by 349 runs in the eighth round of senior cricket’s 45-over Pritchard Shield competition on Saturday.

Methven won the toss and sent Allenton into bat, a decision they would regret 45 overs later when the Allenton barrage came to a close at 430/9.

The innings started with consecutive maidens but quickly went downhill as the Methven fielders spent the best part of four hours retrieving the ball from over the boundary rope.

Matt Tait and Jordon Bird both blasted quick-fire centuries as Allenton went from 34/2 in the seventh over to 264/3 in the 30th over.

Bird made 133 off 95 balls with 10 fours and 11 sixes while Tait’s 132 came off just 73 balls with 20 fours and five sixes.

When Bird departed at 321/4 in the 34th over of the match, Allenton still managed to score 109 runs in the final 11 overs.

With the imposing target ahead of the side that has struggled with bat all season it was a case of inevitable defeat for Methven, needing 9.5 an over.

Ben Payne made 26 and Dav-

ey Maw 21 but there was little other resistance to be all out for 81.

Tait took an impressive 4/6 off three overs late in the innings after Sean Strange had taken 4/19 for the whopping win which is easily a Mid Canterbury record, but New Zealand cricket could not be contacted to see where it sits nationally.

In the other match, Lauriston took care of Coldstream at Lowcliffe.

A 107-run second wicket partnership between Scott Morgan (61) and Nick Gilbert (66) laid the platform for the side to post 198, all out in the 40th over.

Brent Ferguson had 4/13

Coldstream made a steady start through Bo Houston (26), Andrew Bennett (32) and Jay Houston (31).

Ferguson came to the crease and looked to guide his side home with the bat but he was run out for 41 and Coldstream came up 24 runs short.

The matches were a catch-up from the Christchurch Show weekend postponement that was initially scheduled to take place on January 31 but were instead brought forward to have the competition resume a week earlier.

The Tech and Lauriston B match was deferred until January 31.

It won’t be a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth in Australia’s World Cup campaign, George Bailey insists. Winning treble for Pike Cambridge trainer Tony Pike left Ellerslie on Saturday a satisfied man after a top day at the office where he saddled three winners from just four starters at New Zealand’s premier racing venue.

Amongst those winners was former top juvenile Shelford who scored his first New Zealand victory from four attempts after commencing his career in Australia where he won twice and finished seventh in the Gr. 1 Golden Slipper stakes as a two-year-old.

“It was great to see him come back to winning form as he is a quality horse who hasn’t had a lot of luck with the barrier draws so far,” explained Pike.

“He drew the outside gate at each of his first three runs and did it tough so it was nice to see him finally draw well so he could show the class he does possess.

“We’ve pulled him out of the Telegraph as it just wouldn’t suit backing him up so quickly so he can have a few days off now

and then come back for the Darley Plate during Auckland Cup Week.”

Pike was also enthusiastic about the future prospects of three-year-old filly Maid Of Steel who broke her maiden status with a victory over 1400 metres.

“She didn’t get a lot of luck in her first two runs but she put it all together on Saturday and still has plenty of improvement in her,” he noted. “We will take her along slowly but if she can grab another win then we will have a look at some of the three-year-old filly races that are coming up.

“They’re only three once and I do think she will get better the further she goes so a race like the New Zealand Oaks wouldn’t be out of the question if she can take the step up.”

Completing Pike’s treble was class galloper Allez Eagle who made it three from three at Ellerslie with another comfortable win in rating 85 company.

Corey Anderson top-scored for New Zealand with 81 in yesterday’s win at Hagley Oval.

Black Caps take first ODI blood

BY DAVID LEGGAT Half centuries by Brendon McCullum and Corey Anderson carried New Zealand to a threewicket win in the opening ODI against Sri Lanka at Hagley Oval yesterday.

Chasing 219 to win, they reached the target with seven overs to spare. Nathan McCullum finished on 25 and Adam Milne on seven.

McCullum slapped 51, equalling his own national ODI record for the fastest 50, 19 balls.

However New Zealand lost their way and needed Anderson

to strike form. He did, being dismissed shortly before the end for 81.

It was his first score above 25 in his last seven ODI innings.

Off spinner Sachithra Senanayake had New Zealand’s batsmen in a fuddle, removing McCullum and Kane Williamson in quick order and when Grant Elliott and Tom Latham went soon after, New Zealand were looking dicey at 101 for five.

However Anderson batted positively, striking some thunderous boundaries before going lbw to Tillekaratne Dilshan

within a couple of good blows of victory.

A fine century and a stunning late collapse provided contrasting highlights Sri Lanka’s 218 for nine.

Much of the innings was a battle for the Sri Lankan batsmen, but Mahela Jayawardene completed his 18th ODI century in fine style.

However he was the second of three wickets in a maiden over by left arm quick Mitchell McClenaghan in the 47th over.

McClenaghan had Jeevan Mendis caught at deep mid off, Jayawardene superbly caught at

deep mid-wicket by Anderson, running and diving to his left, before Thisara Perera edged his first ball to be brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi leaping to his left.

Senanayake survived the hattrick delivery.

Sri Lanka, who had won the toss, were slow early, experienced Dilshan fiddling about trying to find the pace of the pitch.

Kumar Sangakkara completed a miserable time in Christchurch - he got 6 and 1 in the first test a fortnight ago - when he was caught at deep gully off

speedster Milne for 4. However Jayawardene after finding his range, was rarely in trouble on his way to a run-a-ball century, which included 12 fours and a six.

There were occasional edges but his deft strokeplay ensured Sri Lanka at least had something to defend.

McClenaghan finished with four for 36 off his 10 overs, while Milne was impressive in taking two for 37.

Nathan McCullum and Anderson picked up a wicket apiece while captain Angelo Mathews was run out for 15.
