Ford returns ‘home’ He has starred as the US president, swashbuckling Indiana Jones and a heroic CIA analyst, but Harrison Ford says it was when he stepped back on the new Star Wars set that he really felt at home. “It felt like being home, to an extent. It felt good. I like to work. It was fun,” the Hollywood legend said in Sydney where he is promoting the hotly anticipated new instalment of the franchise, The Force Awakens. The 73-year-old, who was 35 when the first Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope movie was released in 1977, reunites with original cast members Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) in resuming his role as Han Solo. Ford said while Solo was “much the same in aspect”, new elements of his character would be revealed in the latest addition to the saga, directed by JJ Abrams.

Furry callout for firefighters For firefighters, the cliche callout is “cat stuck up tree” – but when the call comes in that there’s a kitten stuck in a car engine, they respond with all they’ve got. “I’ve been in the job 31 years and it was probably one the most interesting jobs I’ve been on,” said Ellerslie station officer Ian Richards after responding to a call for help after a cat was found stuck in a car’s engine compartment. Mr Richards said the kitten was discovered by a woman who had driven about 1km to her local Briscoes store on Mt Wellington Highway and “luckily” heard meowing coming from under the bonnet.
Nicki backs her man Nicki Minaj said she’ll keep boyfriend Meek Mill on the straight and narrow as she testified during the rapper’s latest parole violation hearing in Philadelphia. Minaj took the stand for about half an hour in an effort to keep Mill out of jail. She told the judge she’ll help Mill stay organised and work with him to fulfill his community service requirement. “He’s not perfect but I can’t believe how much he’s changed,” Minaj said. Common Pleas Judge Genece Brinkley is threatening to send Mill back behind bars. Prosecutors say the 28-year-old rapper violated parole in a 2009 drug and gun case by repeatedly changing his court-approved travel schedule. Minaj and Mill recently attended the American Music Awards in Los Angeles, where Minaj picked up two awards. Defence lawyer Frank DeSimone said the music industry is chaotic, and Mill is not trying to disrespect the judge. He also said Minaj and Mill are serious about getting married.
Michelle Obama raps for education Striding out of the White House in slow motion, sporting oversized sunglasses, Michelle Obama lays down a rap track aimed at raising the star power of maths majors and engineering students. “If you wanna fly jets, you should go to college. Reach high and cash cheques? Fill your head with knowledge,” Obama rhymes as comedian Jay Pharoah, known for his Saturday Night Live impression of her husband, President Barack Obama, makes a stack of bills rain on to the floor of the White House. The video is a funny and affectionate send-up of the celebrity culture that Obama has said she wants to turn on its head to try to get more American kids thinking about higher education. Obama’s Better Make Room campaign, targeting students aged 14 to 19, encourages them to go to college by giving them a brush with fame on social media with help from celebrities like Pharoah and basketball great LeBron James. The campaign is part of a larger White House effort to address slipping US college graduation rates. Mrs Obama, who grew up in a working-class family in the South Side of Chicago, often speaks to students about how she worked hard to get good grades.

Hoverboards banned Hoverboards may be on many people’s Christmas lists but they present a conundrum for airlines, which are mulling the best way to transport the popular devices that could present a fire risk. The three largest US airlines, American Airlines Group, United Continental Holdings and Delta Air Lines, each said they are banning hoverboards starting this week in carryon and checked baggage out of safety considerations. American spokesman Casey Norton cited an ongoing investigation into hoverboards by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. The federal agency is looking into at least 10 reports of hoverboard fires in nine states, said spokeswoman Patty Davis.

Cultural end to school year
Gunshots heard One person is critical and another injured after an incident in Rotorua where gunshots were heard. Police were called to the Western Heights suburb of Rotorua at approximately 2.40pm yesterday after multiple reports of disorder near a primary school. Twelve people were seen brawling in the street around Turner Drive and Leslie Avenue. There were also reports of gunshots. It is understood the incident was gang-related. Police spokeswoman Kim Perks said initial inquiries indicated a large group of men were involved in the incident. “Two men are known to have been injured and were taken to Rotorua Hospital. One has critical injuries and the other has left the hospital,” she said. “Four men have been arrested and inquiries are ongoing.” - NZME

The renovation of Community House Mid Canterbury’s new premises is now only mere months away from completion. Earlier this year Community House Mid Canterbury Trust raised the last of the money to buy the Cass Street building, once home to Work and Income New Zealand. Its purchase ensured a positive future for a building with a tragic past. Now, with the refurbishment work well under way Community House members are set to move into their new building in just over three months’ time. Trust board chairman John
Driscoll said the building, set to open in mid-March, will boast 25 rooms including offices, two meeting rooms – one of which is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ashburton and the other by the Road Safety Committee, a child’s play area, staff room and amenities. Everything is tracking to schedule with painting due to be wrapped up shortly and carpet set to be laid early in the New Year, he said. Following that finer details such as electrical and fibre optic internet access will be finalised. Not only is the interior undergoing a facelift, so too is the exterior. No longer accessible via Cass
Street, a new entrance has been built in the carpark. A porch in the new entranceway is under construction and the building’s primary feature, a memorial to the victims of the Winz tragedy, will be located on the Cass Street side of the building. Late last month Mr Driscoll called for donations for the memorial and said already the community had come forward. Leen Braam has offered to do the landscaping and other groups have donated funds, he said. While a lot has happened renovation wise, the building is not being fully revamped. Community house manager
Kathryn Barr said some areas, including the staff room, a meeting room and amenities will remain intact and the heating system is being left as is. The anchor tenant is Safer Ashburton but already 19 other tenants have signed on, both permanent and temporary. Ms Barr said because of the great interest only four office spaces remain available to lease. Both Mr Driscoll and Ms Barr said the support from the community throughout the renovation process had been unbelievable. “The community has been fantastic,” they said. “It’s just great…everyone is so excited to move in.”

The cause of Thursday night’s inferno at a Takapuna office tower remains unknown – and photos from inside the scorched building show the extent of the damage. However, details about the manpower involved in containing and extinguishing the fire at the BDO building on Como Street have been released. Fire Risk Management officer Michael Upton said more than 100 firefighters and 23 appliances were required to fight the blaze on the fifth floor of the building. Mr Upton said the Fire Service was alerted to the fire at 8.49pm by an automatic fire alarm activation from the building. It was brought under control shortly after 10.30pm. - NZME
Passport demand high Kiwis are proving anything but flightless, by flocking to obtain new 10-year passports for overseas holidays this summer. The Department of Internal Affairs says demand for passports is more than 60 per cent higher than normal for December, with 31,372 applications having been received since the beginning of the month. That was when 10-year passports became available for the first time since 2005, when New Zealand introduced five-year documents in response to security concerns sparked by the 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. - NZME

Cars broken into
Mid Cantabrians will be able to learn the second most widely spoken language in the world next year. Ashburton resident Gisela Cuadrado, who is originally from Argentina, will be holding a small number of Spanish classes in 2016. Mrs Cuadrado said now that most of her children have started school she wanted to do something for the community. She had taught a few classes when she first moved to Ashburton but had not had time for a number of years. Learning a language helped improve people’s minds, enabled people to travel more easily and was fun, Mrs Cuadrado said. She wanted to see what sort of demand there was before offering the classes. Each class would only have a small number of people and if there was enough interest she would offer different types of classes such as Spanish for travel, beginners, advanced or children, but spaces would be

Yet another American doctor is making their way to Ashburton, this time to Moore Street Medical Centre. Dr Dale Abbott, from Washington, is taking up residence at the practice in January for an 11-month stint. The fifth American doctor in Ashburton – three work out of Allenton Medical Centre and another is based at Sealy Street
Medical – Dr Abbott will take over Dr Charlotte Cox’s former room. Dr Cox departed the Moore Street centre in August this year and opened Ashburton Health First on Havelock Street. Originally she and husband local dentist Justin Wall intended to build their own dual practice, however the slow process resulted in Dr Cox opening a solo practice. Following her departure a locum worked out of Moore
Street. Moore Street Medical Centre practice manager Greg Baker said enrolments opened up after the departure of Dr Cox, and with the inclusion of Dr Abbott the books opened up even further. “We’ve had some adverts in and so we will just see how it goes,” he said. Not only is Dr Abbott looking for patients, Dr Chris Ryan and Dr Peter Sparks also have their books open, he said.
Dr Abbott arrives in New Zealand on January 16 but Mr Baker said before he gets to seeing patients he will undergo an orientation. “We’ve got a bit of orientation to do first with him, the medical side of things here as far as hospitals and everything is totally different than the states,” he said. Vehicles collide St John Ashburton sent an ambulance and the first response unit from Methven to a vehicle collision between two cars on Havelock Street at 1pm on Thursday. Two people, one a boy aged under 12, were transported to Ashburton Hospital in moderate conditions.

Ashburton College may have celebrated its 50th birthday but it is probably one of the few secondary schools in New Zealand that does not have an old pupils’ association. That’s about to change, with a group of ex-students putting the wheels in motion that will see the launch of the Old Collegians Association. Peter Gluyas is one of the s drivers behind the project. He has identified a group of like-minded former students and they’ve al-
ready laid the groundwork on which the new association will be built. Rather than reinvent the wheel, Mr Gluyas said he had talked to people involved with similar associations at a range of schools. “We’ve seen what they do and how they do it and we’re picking the eyes out of their experiences and adapting it to what will work for us,” he said. Ashburton’s challenge was that it had 50 years’ worth of students to catch up on, but once the association was formed, the idea would be for students to join as
they left school, Mr Gluyas said. “We’re fortunate the college has really good records and as the first step we plan to establish ‘peer groups’, using one person as the key contact for each year.” The association will not only be for past students, it will be for staff and board of trustee members too. And it will be open to ex-pupils from the college’s two founding schools, Ashburton High School and Hakatere College. Alister Argyle is also a member of the team driving the new association and believes it will take time to build the organisation to
a point where it can be launched successfully. Next year will be spent spreading the contact net as wide as possible and encouraging people to join. He anticipates the association will be officially launched in early 2017. “We need to develop enthusiasm and interest, our success rises or falls on this. We’re very conscious that it will take some time to get it going. It needs to be done very well when it’s officially launched,” Mr Argyle said. The organisation would run at arm’s length from the college and
would have its own identity. “This is about keeping people in touch with the school and with one another. The community needs a strong college and the college needs strong community support,” he said. Cadet unit wraps up a successful 2015

The Ashburton District was part of an eastern coastal band of New Zealand that emerged from spring with a significant soil moisture deficit. The National Climate Centre climate summary for spring shows the district as part of a large eastern area of the South Island that had a rainfall that was around 50 per cent below normal and where sunshine hours were high. Ashburton might have been dry but in some parts of New Zealand record lows for rainfall were recorded, including Blenheim and Orari Estate in South Canterbury. While sunshine hours were high in the Ashburton District, we also recorded some very low temperatures, with Winchmore having a mean air minimum for the month of just four degrees, its third lowest since 1928 when records were kept. On November 27 Ashburton is on record has having its third highest minimum spring air temperature since 1928, 17.9 degrees. The hottest day for spring occurred in Cheviot on November 26, 31.3 degrees and the lowest in Hanmer Forest, 2.7 degrees. The highest spring sunshine hours were recorded in Blenheim, 777, its sunniest spring since 1947.

The Ashburton Cadet Unit (ACU) topped off a successful year by receiving the National Efficiency Title at their end of year parade on Thursday night. The ACU, which was assessed on November 12, competed against two other units for the title of being the best run unit in the country. Unit Commander Major Andrew Kenny said they had no idea they were going to find out on the night of their final parade. They were not due to be told until after December 12 when the last unit was assessed but that had been moved forward. The whole unit was really pleased to have received the award, which they had not had since 2010. “It’s good to be back on top again.” It was a direct reflection of the effort of the whole unit, he said. “They’ve put in a lot of hard yards.” This title topped off a “phenomenal” year for the unit which received a number of other awards and also competed in the National Area Skills Competition for the first time, Major Kenny said.

Scouting group offers holiday programme with a difference A new adventure holiday programme promises to keep kids on their toes for a week in January. Experienced scouting leaders will keep the group of 10 to 13-year-olds safe and share their knowledge across a range of activities. Mania-o-Roto scout leader Phillip Crozier said the Adventure Plus programme includes a day of water sports at Lake Hood, a cycling tour, pioneering, sporting activities and an overnight camp over at the scout park. “We won’t have Bear Grylls there and we won’t be dropping them off on a desert island or feeding them huhu grubs but it will
be a lot of fun,” Mr Crozier said. It is the first time the scouting group have offered the programme, which is intended to fill a week of the school holidays for an age group too young to be left at home alone, but beyond the age of requiring a babysitter as such. The programme is open to both scouting and non-scouting youth and costs $200 for the week. It will run from 8am to 5pm from Monday, January 18 to Friday, January 22. Licence plan ‘no big deal’ By RuBy HaRfield

A new initiative to encourage students to get their driver’s licence by offering NCEA credits has been met with little enthusiasm in Mid Canterbury. Education minister Hekia Parata and associate transport minister Craig Foss announced the incentive on Tuesday. Mrs Parata said schools and tertiary education providers would not be obliged to include driver training in their curricula, but
many would find doing so would make learning more relevant for students. Mount Hutt principal John Schreurs said he would consider including it in the curriculum but he did not feel it was a big deal. “If it makes a difference to some students then it is good. “I don’t see it as a big game changer.” Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan said he was not sure if the school would look into the possibly of adding it to their
curriculum. It seemed as though the initiative had been created as a response to more young people arriving in the workplace with no licence following a change in legislation in 2011 which saw the minimum age for someone getting a learner licence change from 15 to 16. However, it was more of an issue in cities where it was easy for people to walk, bike or use public transport. In rural places people needed to learn how to drive early to be
able to travel, he said. Students will be able to gain two credits towards NCEA Level 1 by passing the learner licence theory test, four credits towards NCEA Level 2 by earning a restricted licence and a further two credits towards NCEA Level 2 by gaining a full licence. The administrative systems to support this change will be in place from April 1 next year. The granting of licences will remain the responsibility of the relevant driver licensing agents.

The festive season will be kicked off in style tonight when Ashburton turns on its big summer party, Christmas in the Park. Each year thousands of people flock to the Ashburton Domain to be entertained, to picnic, to party and to have fun. And each year the party gets bigger and better. Promoter Carmen Lye and her team have been hard at work for months preparing for the event that will showcase the best from Ashburton’s entertainment scene along with top line musicians from around New Zealand. Topping the list of entertainers are Stevie Tonks, fourth in last year’s X-Factor and Christchurch musician Dan Hitchens. They’ll be supported by more than 40 other entertainers including locals Julia Bell, Luke Glendinning and Layna Hunt. Ashburton’s Danceworx performers will also be on stage. This year’s event has been moved to a Saturday night and Mrs Lye anticipates this will attract an even larger crowd. The challenge, she said, is to top last year’s record breaker of 8000. Also on the list of entertainers is Santa who will arrive during the evening.
Just the main role of Oliver remains unfilled following Variety Theatre Ashburton releasing its cast list for the show this week. Tinwald School principal Peter Livingstone has agreed to play the part of the cruel villain Bill Sikes, after director Alice Sollis went shoulder tapping when no-one auditioned for the role. “He intimated if I thought he could do the part, he would,” Mrs Sollis said.
The ultimate in temperature control has arrived at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre. Summer sun had turned the centre’s pool area into a sauna, making it unpleasant for people sitting pool side, but thanks to technology the problem has been fixed, said centre manager Steve Prescott. A failed magazine publisher who defrauded Heartland Bank and fleeced his own sister has been jailed for three years. Victor Clarke, 62, appeared at Auckland District Court for sentencing before Judge Claire Ryan after pleading guilty to charges of obtaining by deception, using a forged document and false accounting. While some of the offending related to his business, MediaWeb, another part involved him deceiving his sister, which meant she has now lost her Devonport home and been forced to move outside Auckland. Close call with train A KiwiRail train driver has been stood down from duties after a near miss with a child at Levin Railway Station. The driver of the Northern Explorer train heading to Auckland through Levin about 9.30am yesterday slammed on the brakes after he saw a child run from the platform in front of the train. A KiwiRail spokesperson said the driver saw the child run close to the train. “Initially the driver thought the child may have been struck.” Following a search of the area and under the train by police and Kiwirail staff, it was determined the child had not been hit and officials were treating the incident as a “near miss”. The spokeperson said the driver would be stood down until they were ready to return to work. “This is a strong reminder of the serious dangers and people must only cross the track where it is safe for them to do so,” the KiwiRail spokesperson said. - NZME

Students enticed into arable sector By RuBy HaRfield

Mid Canterbury students are being encouraged to pursue careers in the arable industry through a scholarship programme. The Ashburton Grain & Seed Association has been offering a scholarship programme for Year 12 and 13 students in Mid Canter-
bury for the past three years. President Tony Henderson said they created the programme to get more school-aged children interested in the arable sector. In Mid Canterbury students tended to favour the dairy industry and it had been a struggle to recruit younger people into grains and seeds.
However, over the past three years their programme had been a success with a number of students being swayed to study it at a tertiary level, he said. “The focus is always on trying to get people into the arable industry.” The association offers the programme to 20 Ashburton College
and 10 Mount Hutt College Year 12 and 13 students each year. All students complete a two-day workshop and submit a project which is in line with the NCEA curriculum. Students are given hands-on experience in the field and undertake industry related assignments covering five major components
of the industry – vegetable seeds, small seeds, grain and cereals, forage and services to the industry. As part of the programme students can receive scholarships and awards. The association is a non-profit education and support association for people working in the arable sector in Mid Canterbury.

Ashburton to host Mindful Mum workshop By eRin TaskeR When you become a mum, the word busy takes on a whole new meaning. However, a former Ashburton woman believes she has the answer to ensuring busy doesn’t equal stress. Victoria Hood is the Mindful Mum, and in January she’s bringing one of her workshops to Ashburton, with the aim of growing happiness and gratitude among Mid Canterbury mums. Mindfulness, she says, keeps her sane, and she’s used it at home, and at work. She has a post graduate degree in psychology and has worked in the mental health field – including for the Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service (ACADS) – but now lives in the Waikato, and is a mum herself.

are nine, four and two and she cherishes every moment with them despite holding down two jobs where she takes mindfulness to mums, and into schools. “Life is not busy, it’s full-on in a meaningful way. I get to the end of the day and think ‘yes, we did this and this and this’ and I remember the expressions on their faces when we did something they liked,” she said. Too often these days, mums don’t do this, she said. “I feel as though with mums these days, and me being one of them, that it’s become trendy to be busy,” Mrs Hood said. “To say my kids do this, and my kids do that, and after school we are so busy. It’s actually like, how is that promoting our happiness? How is that looking after our wellbeing, and how is that creating a settling and nurturing
environment for our kids? “It’s like people are so busy doing things that they don’t stop and look at that for a second.” Being a successful and nurturing parent from the inside out is what she teaches, and what she believes is of critical importance. “When we are more mindful, we are more aware, and when we are more aware we can give more to our kids, our partners and our work,” she said. It was about small changes, for big impact, like focusing on only one thing at a time, she said. “It’s about being fully there when you’re doing things, and being present and enjoying every moment.” Mrs Hood will host a Mindful Mum workshop at the Hotel Ashburton on January 24. Recreational water users are being reminded that their mantra for the summer every time they head home from a day spent fishing or boating is to check, clean and dry their clothing, boats and aquatic equipment. By following that three-step process, Environment Canterbury regional manager biodiversity and security Graham Sullivan said people will be doing their bit to keep freshwater pests from spreading from lake to lake. “While having fun you can also be a responsible water guardian, leaving your favourite spot as you found it,” he said. “Freshwater pests like didymo spoil recreational activities and can affect plant and animal habitats. They also undermine the community’s efforts to keep their waterways clean and improve water quality. “So remember to check for cling-ons, clean your gear, or if this isn’t practical dry your clothes and equipment, before entering and leaving the water. We don’t want people to stop enjoying waterways, just to make sure they’re not having an impact on the environment.” The post-water clean up was not just about didymo, it was also about taking the right steps to stop the spread of other freshwater pests such as lagarosiphon, egeria and hornwort, Mr Sullivan said. “Many of our waterways are still free of these pests and we want to keep them that way.” The process involves checking all gear for cling-ons, washing, soaking or spraying it in a detergent or nappy cleaner solution and then rinsing gear in clean water before thoroughly drying it. Not the greatest season for asparagus By Michelle NelsoN

A long cold spring followed by a very hot spell has taken its toll on this season’s asparagus harvest for one Mid Canterbury business. John and Helen Cunliffe have been growing asparagus on their Tinwald farm for more than 40 years, following in the footsteps of Mr Cunliffe’s parents’ 23-year reign. Like any other farming pursuit, you have your good and your bad years, Mrs Cunliffe said. On Thursday morning the pickers cut the last of this year’s crop. Mrs Cunliffe said it was a labour intensive business for six to eight weeks
of the year. The freshly-cut spears are washed, trimmed and packed before 95 per cent of the crop is dispatched to local markets. “We get great support from New World and the Green Grocer – we wouldn’t be able to keep going without them,” Mrs Cunliffe said. The asparagus plants will now be left to their own devices until next spring, when they will get a nutrient boost with a “special organic brew” and lime, before the growing season starts again. Meanwhile, the team will turn its attention to the courgette, pumpkin and gherkin crops, which will come online after Christmas.

By doing what comes naturally, a flock of peacocks have turned a neighbourhood upside down and created a problem that no one seems able to solve.

The Ashburton District Council has fielded a complaint from a property owner about the noise a few renegade peacocks are creating in the small hours of the morning. They’ve investigated, and found the problem was genuine. Now council staff are faced with a thorny problem of their own, finding a solution. The difficulty council environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle faced was finding the peacocks’ owners and then finding an agency that would deal with the problem. The peacocks were outside the council’s animal control policy; they needed to be dealt with by pest control, which was not a function of council, he said. To try to find a resolution, the council had tried to mediate between the people who were believed to be the peacocks’ owners and the complainant. “It’s a delicate situation. We’re sending them out some advice on pest controllers who can help and we’re hoping they can talk to one another and come to an arrangement.” The peacock situation was similar to a recent problem with inner town pigeons fouling buildings and footpaths, where the council was the intermediary but the building owners dealt with pest control, Mr Catchpowle said. “Here we’re dealing with pigeons that have been residing there for around 14 years. We’re mediators in a situation where we’re trying to find a happy solution for everyone – including the peacocks.”

A woman has been arrested after allegedly stabbing her partner in Christchurch. Emergency services were called to a house in Hornby on Thursday night, where they found a 46-year-old man who had been stabbed. Police said a 48-year-old woman was arrested and due to appear in Christchurch District Court. The victim was taken to Christchurch Hospital where he underwent surgery overnight and was now in a stable condition. Detective Sergeant Geoff Ruddick said the couple were in a relationship. “This was a domestic violence related incident,” he said. “It is always concerning that relationships deteriorate to this level, and there are a number of agencies to help if people have issues.” Police officers examined the scene yesterday, but anyone with any information was asked to call Christchurch Police on 03 363 7400 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. - NZME

For the first year in decades, Phillip Crozier won’t be wrangling turkeys this Christmas – but the business is in good hands. Kyle and Monique Smith have leased the Crozier operation with the intention of buying it in the future. Mr Smith has extensive experience in the poultry industry spanning 12 years. He has managed a turkey hatchery and worked as a livestock manager on a turkey, duck and quail unit. As former hairdresser and beauty therapist, Mrs Smith’s knowledge of all things turkey is more limited, but the couple jumped at the chance to take on the wellknown free range business, under the watchful eye of Mr Crozier. “We are really grateful to Phil and Judith for giving us this opportunity,” Mr Smith said. The free range aspect of the business was the big attraction for the Smiths, with the turkey poults turned out into paddocks at about four weeks of age. “The way turkeys are farmed here goes above and beyond the accredited standards for free range poultry,” Mr Smith said. “We plan to continue with the same model, we will slowly change some things but the concept and the brand will remain the same.” Mr Smith said the evolution of free range poultry in more intensive operations was driven by consumer trends, but the practice at Croziers is centred on the welfare of the birds. “The birds get to roost and act according to their instincts – they have lots more room than they would in an accredited operation, where the outside area only has to be one and a half times the size of

the shed,” he said. By contrast the six-week-old turkeys at Croziers have well over a hectare and the choice of several shelters. They spend the day outside and are ring fenced into the shelters at night to protect them from the
weather. “Because of the lower intensity we have less disease risk. The genetics in these birds mean they are slower growing and have time to develop more immunity,” Mr Smith said. Even the breeding flock is free range, only going indoors at night.
‘Black Widow’s’ son the driver in Wednesday’s fatal collision The driver of a car that crashed, killing one man and injuring a woman, is the son of Christchurch’s infamous “Black Widow” murderer. Adam Kearns, 24, was on home detention when the Subaru he was driving crashed into two parked vehicles on Wairakei Road, Christchurch, at about 7.45pm on Wednesday. He is the son of convicted murderer Helen Milner, dubbed the Black Widow, who was sentenced to life in prison for murdering her husband Philip Nisbet in 2009 by poisoning him with the allergy drug Phenergan. Wednesday night’s crash killed 24-year-old Nicholas Brent Mor-

In April, he appeared in Christchurch District Court after being arrested late last year on suspicion of dealing drugs. He pleaded guilty to selling cannabis, possession of cannabis, and unlawful possession of a gun. He was sentenced to eight months’ home detention and 150 hours of community work. Then, in July, he was sentenced to four months’ home detention and 250 hours of community work after he was found guilty of punching and stomping on former All Black Justin Marshall outside a Queenstown bar on Good Friday in 2013. - NZME
Measles warning issued by authorities Health authorities have issued a measles warning after an infected tourist visited parts of Wellington, Marlborough and Canterbury this week. The 28-year-old European man is thought to have contracted the highly infectious disease while visiting Australia. He first noticed measles-like symptoms on Monday and later checked in at a doctor’s clinic in Kaikoura two days later. Tests on Thursday confirmed he had measles. Canterbury medical officer of health, Dr Alistair Humphrey, said he was now in a private house near Christchurch. All other residents staying there are immunised against measles. Dr Humphrey said it was important for people to get immunised. “The measles virus spreads
easily from person to person through the air, via breathing, coughing and sneezing. “It starts with fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, and sore throat. This is followed by a rash that spreads over the body.” Dr Humphrey said the infected man had taken all precautionary steps needed when he realised he had the symptoms. “Once the case realised he could have measles he did all the right things. By isolating himself he has greatly reduced the likelihood of further spread, and possibly saved lives as well. “The case is one of a relatively small number of people who for medical reasons aren’t able to be vaccinated. Their protection relies on those of us who can get vaccinated to do so. The more people who get vaccinated, the safer everyone will be.” - NZME

aylee Campbell isn’t an artist; she calls herself a creator. Almost three years after carefully handpainting her first stones gathered from a beach, her increasing array of creations can be found in gardens, and on doors and walls, of countless homes. But it’s a path she never dreamt her life would take. Early 2012, Haylee was in a bad place. She fell unexpectedly pregnant and her only brother was dying from cancer. The news that she was expecting now three-yearold Luka came the day before her brother Jamie’s funeral; two massive life-changing events had turned her life on its end. Luka was a great sleeper from day one, and still is, and while that was good news for the single mum, it also meant she had a lot of time on her hands during the day. Haylee needed to do something, and that thing turned out to be painting stones. “I just started it for something to do while he was sleeping,” Haylee said. “It started from ladybirds and just went from there.” Stones painted as ladybirds has grown to stones painted carefully with outdoor paint – many to order - under the banner of Creeationz. The ladybirds have been joined by penguins and strawberries, the odd Minion, and larger stones featuring inspirational quotes or greetings, among other things. “I just go with other people’s ideas of what they want. People have their own quotes and things they want,” she said. Haylee takes her creations to markets in the summer, sells them through Facebook, and welcomes people into her own home to browse. Her home is overflowing with her creations. There’s painted stones, wooden name boards for kids’ doors, painted markers for vegetable gardens, stone art on canvas, and you don’t need deep pockets to own some, with the cheapest stones costing just 50 cents. “I just want to hit every market. Everyone should be able to afford it. People shouldn’t have to spend a lot of money to get a token Christmas present,” she said. People have told her she should put her prices up, but she doesn’t want to. She only wants to cover her costs. “I’m not a business, it’s just a hobby.” Other people ask if she gets sick of painting stones, but Haylee said for her, it was like a form of therapy. “For me it’s my outlet. It’s my way of dealing with things I guess, and it keeps my mind on the straight and narrow,” she said. She goes to the cemetery to visit Jamie’s grave and sees stones she has painted sitting next to headstones. Painting the stones not only helps her, but it also helps others. They’re something small, but they can mean a lot. She can make stones for all occasions and can personalise them with names, or special quotes or knick-knacks. It’s not what she originally set out to do – the first time she went to the beach she was looking for stones to stack together as a sort of sculpture. But then someone said they’d seen a ladybird painted on a stone being sold for $12. She decided she could do better for less, and she did. Her big ladybird stones sell for just $4. With Luka in tow, she started scouring beaches for stones – preferably flat ones – and she’s become such an expert that now, rather than seeing stones on those beach visits, she sees ladybirds and Minions lying on the ground. She knows exactly what size stone she needs for each project, and has a pile sitting at her door waiting to be transformed. During the summer months she gets a good production line going when Luka’s asleep, and at night, and with markets booked for every second weekend and orders to fill for Christmas, she’s kept on her toes. It’s a lot of work, but Haylee said she’s yet to miss a deadline, and doesn’t plan on doing so any time soon.

Late Mt Somers farmer Kees Schikker had an interesting life. It included growing up in wartorn Holland and escaping the Nazis by hiding in an attic. It is all recorded in his autobiography, to be released this weekend. Susan Sandys reports.

t Somers farmer Kees Schikker would have been proud to see his autobiography in print, says his daughter Julia Crosson. The 156-page soft cover book is to be publicly launched today and will be available at Paper Plus, ATS and PGG Wrightson from next week. The launch will be at the Mt Somers library at 10am, before a second function tomorrow at 3.30pm at St David’s Church in Allenton. Mr Schikker began writing his life story in 2001. “I asked him to write a few things down and it poured out into a book,” Mrs Crosson said. “He’s a bit of a storyteller.” She helped him compile it ready for publishing, and he was able to see it all typed up in a ringbinder before he passed away in February at the age of 88. Mr Schikker certainly had material to work with, having had an interesting life, which included surviving World War Two in his home country of Holland, and immigrating to New Zealand. He describes the Nazi invasion of his home town and Jewish friends and fellow residents being sent away to concentration camps. As a teenager he hid from Nazis on the lookout for young men to put to work. In an attic at his parents’ house, he would average one book per day, paint and listen to the BBC at 6pm on an illegal radio he had wired through the ceiling. “I wrote down the news of the war, which was getting better by the day and took a note down for the family to read and burn
promptly.” He describes a dismal time as people living on rations and produce from blackmarket sellers, died from cold, lack of food and disease. During a raid on his home as Nazis were looking for blankets and anything else they could find, he feared they would discover him in the attic. “I thought that they could hear my heart banging and thumping. A plus was that it really showed that Germany was getting to its last gasp. People thought ‘Hang in there, it won’t last long’.” Allied air drops of parcels of bread, flour, butter, bully beef and milk powder really signalled the end of the war. “It was literally ‘manna from heaven’,” he wrote. “Surprisingly there was no uncontrolled bun rush for it. Quite organised, the goods were distributed through the normal ration system. Interestingly, I recently got talking to a fellow Ashburtonian, Tiny Baynes, who was an RAF pilot dropping the food parcels. He said it was the most exciting experience he has ever had, dropping food instead of bombs.” Mr Schikker’s story goes on to tell of leaving post-war Holland for Indonesia as part of the Dutch Army, and an unexpected migration to New Zealand in the 1950s. He moved south from Te Aroha to become a sheep farmer and raise his family at Mt Somers. He and wife Mary had four children – Julia, Stephen, Victor, and Robert, who remains on the Mt Somers family farm today.

Rakaia resident Jesse Houston recently added to his growing list of accolades by being selected to the BNZ Condor Sevens National tournament team, after helping Christchurch Boys to victory in the plate final last week. Houston, who attended Mount Hutt College until year 11, will be studying agricultural commerce at Lincoln University next year, after earning a rugby scholarship. Houston has enjoyed success in the 15-man game and sevens, making 48 appearances for Christchurch Boys in an accomplished 1st XV career and turning out for the Canterbury and Crusader under 18 sides. After earning a place in the Canterbury sevens team, the loose forward started four of his side’s five matches at the Southern Regional
Sevens Qualifiers in Timaru last month, scoring two tries against Mid Canterbury in the process, to help his side qualify for the nationals next month. Houston followed his senior sevens success up with some fine displays at the Condor Sevens National tournament team last week. Christchurch began pool play with wins over Wanganui High School (29-5) and St Patrick’s College Silverstream (28-19), to the surprise of the locals, and earned a spot in the tournament’s top 16. Houston’s team then rolled Nelson College 25-12 to book a place in the quarter-finals, but lost against Rotorua. CBHS bounced back from that defeat in style, toppling hosts Kelston Boys’ High School 26-0 in the playoffs before downing old enemy St Bede’s, after trailing 12-0 at half time, 21-17 to win the
plate final and secure a fifth place finish overall, the school’s highest ever position. Houston’s efforts saw him selected as one of 12 boys, and the only South Islander, to the prestigious Condor Sevens National tournament team. The former deputy-head boy reflected positively on his teammates’ performances, but was modest and unconvinced by his own displays, after falling ill just before the tournament began. “All the boys stood up and performed to the best of their ability for the plate final,” he said. “I went down with the flu last week. “I went up there pretty tired and knackered, all the medicine took it out of me, and I didn’t think that I’d played to the best of my ability.” With one eye on the national
sevens next month, Houston was hesitant to look too far ahead, insisting he will concentrate on “what’s in front of him” while reflecting warmly on what, and who, helped him to where he is today. “Everything’s developed (at Christchurch Boys’), education and my abilities for rugby and leadership,” he said. “It developed because of the environment I was in and the opportunities at Adams House and the people that were around me.” As for the national sevens tournament, Houston is confident Canterbury have the components to perform well against the country’s finest. “We’ve got some good players, I reckon our chances are quite high. “We’re training hard, our goal is making top eight for a start, but I think we’ll go pretty well.”
Faletau crosses the border to join Bath Wales No.8 Taulupe Faletau has joined Bath from Newport Gwent Dragons, the English Premiership club announced on Thursday after being rebuffed in an earlier attempt to sign him. In brief Third for under 17s At the under-17 age-group cricket tournament, Mid Canterbury fell to a 66-run loss to Christchurch Metro Black on Thursday, before defeating South Canterbury by five wickets yesterday to finish third. On Thursday, Metro Black posted 242 for four from their 60 overs, but Mid Canterbury were all out for 176 in reply. Mid Canterbury bounced back well yesterday to see off the old enemy, after winning the toss and electing to field, they restricting South Canterbury to a paltry 62 all out and chased down the total in the 13th over.

Australian batsmen Adam Voges and Shaun Marsh rewrote the record books against the West Indies yesterday. They set a Test record for the fourth wicket, overtaking 437 made by Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera in 2009. It is the second-highest Test partnership by Australia, trailing only Sir Donald Bradman and Bill Ponsford’s 451-run secondwicket stand against England in 1934. It is the sixth-highest Test partnership ever. The pinnacle is 624 by Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene in 2006. It is the highest Test partnership against the West Indies, surpassing England’s Peter May and Colin Cowdrey’s mark of 411 set in 1957. The penultimate Pritchard Shield round before the Christmas break will see Allenton host Coldstream and Methven entertain Tech, while Lauriston have a bye. In last Saturday’s action, Coldstream took a 12-run win over Lauriston while Tech posted a
more convincing 46-run win over Allenton. Coldstream batted first in fine conditions against Lauriston and were all out for 98 in the 33rd over. In reply, Lauriston were all out in the 26th over for a paltry 86, as Richard Print produced a singlehanded demolition job of the
home side with six for 24 off nine overs. In the round’s opposite fixture, Allenton made the short trip to shield holders, Tech. The Stags won the toss, elected to bat first, and were all out for 188 in the 44th over. The visitors’ reply got off to a solid start with Matt Tait and Jeff

Sri Lankans keeping test hopes alive Sri Lanka are battling hard to stay in the contest after two days of the first test against New Zealand at University Oval. They will start the third day today at 197 for four, still trailing New Zealand by 234 runs. Wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal was unbeaten on a fine 83 with Kithuruwan Vithanage on 10. Vithanage had a life on six, Kane Williamson spilling an uppish drive at short cover off Doug Bracewell late in the day. New Zealand added 22 to their overnight score to be dismissed for 431. Bracewell had time to make his highest test score, 47, before being last man out. Sri Lanka were in difficulties early with Kusal Mendis and debutant Udara Jayasundera giving catches to

Wagner hits 160km/h Black Caps bowler Neil Wagner was clocked bowling 160km/h yesterday morning by the speed radar at University Oval in Dunedin. The Otago leftarmer was bowling to Dinesh Chandimal on day two of New Zealand’s test against Sri Lanka when he apparently hurtled down the fastest delivery in the history of New Zealand cricket, but skeptics have been quick to point out it was most likely a technological error. She may be donning the red of Canterbury, but Mid Canterbury can boast of one semi-finalist, and potential finalist, on the last day of the 2015 Women’s Toro Interprovincials at the Ashburton Golf Club today. Catherine Bell and her Canterbury team will take on a formidable North Harbour side today, the last team to win the tournament in 2010 before Auckland’s fouryear dominance.
Bell has won all of her matches so far and her young team have been in fine form throughout the week, with an unblemished record, having defeated Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay, Southland, Aorangi, Waikato, Auckland and Tasman to secure a semi-final berth. The former Ashburton College student said she has enjoyed playing on the familiar course, and confidence has grown throughout the team, particularly after seeing off reigning champions Auckland (3-2) in a nail-biting encounter.
“It’s been great, I’m comfortable and relaxed, I know the course, but the greens are a lot quicker,” she said. “The game against Auckland, it was such a tight game. “We were all down at one stage but we all fought back, which is a really good achievement, it almost felt like the final to us.” The 21-year-old has also been keeping one eye on Aorangi, who she last played for three years ago. Aorangi, who will play off for seventh and eighth place against
Northland today, have surpassed all expectations, collectively winning 13 out of 30 matches. “It’s great to see, I still support them (Aorangi). “Everyone from their team supports us and we do them, it’s brilliant how well they’ve done,” she said. Should Canterbury win this year’s tournament, it will be the first time since 1988, with the closest they’ve come since being a final defeat to Bay of Plenty in 2006.
PGA top man ‘far from finished’ PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem jokingly said he was relieved to see Tiger Woods still alive after reading such gloomy reports from his press conference in the Bahamas about his back issues. Finchem didn’t come away with a feeling that Woods was finished. As for his own future? That’s equally vague. Finchem’s latest four-year contract will expire in June, which would complete 23 years as the commissioner. But even with a succession plan in place - he named Jay Monahan the deputy commissioner in March - it didn’t sound as though Finchem was counting the days.
Far from it. “It’s a little ill-defined at the moment,” Finchem said. “We have a great succession plan in progress. There are a couple of three major kind of projects I’d like to get pushed a little bit. The timing of what that means is still up in the air. “The board is very comfortable about that.” Finchem turns 69 next year, though the PGA Tour policy board recently extended the age limit of board members to 75. So that’s not an issue. Of greater interest are the projects to which he refers. Finchem didn’t indicate that he
wants to close the book on them, saying later that he wanted “to get at least a little momentum.” Among the possible projects: — The policy board at its last meeting approved a massive capital campaign project for improvements to The Players Championship and TPC Sawgrass. For all that Finchem has done in his two decades, The Players always has been among his highest priorities. — Golf returns to the Olympics next year in Rio de Janeiro for the first time since 1904, though the work is not done. Golf will be part of the Olympic program in Rio and in Tokyo for 2020. But the
big hurdle is securing its place for 2024 and beyond. The IOC will decide that in 2017, though it helps that most of the top stars plan to compete. — Most intriguing is the possibility of a global tour. Finchem first mentioned it five years ago. He didn’t have a clear view of what form it would take other than to say that “at some point in time, men’s professional golf will become integrated globally.” This constitutes a long-term project that he would like to “get pushed a little bit.” It also requires plenty of co-operation with other tours, particularly in Europe and in Asia. - AFP

Cantabs fly SI flag The final four have been decided for the 2015 Women’s Toro Interprovincials. After Canterbury, North Harbour and Bay of Plenty all made it through on Thursday, Waikato joined them yesterday. The semi-finals will see Canterbury lock horns with North Harbour and Waikato face Bay of Plenty in what will be an exciting final day at the Ashburton Golf Club. Yesterday’s action was always about the fixture between Auckland and Waikato, which lived up to all the hype and more. After winning four Interprovincials in a row, Auckland have bowed out just short of the finals. Waikato number two Brooke Hamilton showed class under pressure to be the standout performer defeating Rose Zheng 4/3. “It feels awesome, best feeling ever, especially beating Auckland who have won it four years in a row,” said Hamilton. Playing in only her second interprovincial, Hamilton certainly didn’t show it, as she came out of the gates on fire. “I won a few holes early which relieved some pressure and allowed me to cruise in the back nine but finished it off well.” “We were all ready to win as soon as we teed off. “We knew it was going to be hard, but wow it was awesome,” said 17-year-old Hamilton. “The girls just have to take the same attitude into tomorrow and hopefully next time we talk I will be even happier.” For Auckland there was only ever one goal in mind, and that was to win a fifth title in a row. They have been slightly off the pace this week and it showed again yesterday. The defending champions had the early lead against Waikato which they held through 13 holes, to then let it quickly slip away.
Warriors culture ok Warriors prize recruit Roger Tuivasa-Sheck has shot down suggestions his brilliance will be dulled by the Auckland club’s allegedly unprofessional culture. Cycling, triathlon take big financial hits A switch in focus headlines Sport New Zealand’s community sport budgetary announcement for the next four years. The hardest hit national sporting organisations include cycling (down from $350,000 to $180,000 next year and 75,000 by 2017-18), gymsports ($650,000 to $530,000 to $250,000), snow sports ($300,000 to $214,500 to $15,000) and triathlon ($310,000 to $232,000 to $50,000). Among the investment rises are waka ama (from $50,000 to $165,000 next year), touch rugby ($250,000 to $340,000), basketball ($450,000 to $590,000) and badminton ($115,000 to $290,000).

Geoff Barry, Sport NZ’s general manager of community sport, says the change aligns with their 2015-20 strategy. $43m will be invested per annum for the next four years. “It’s about $150,000 less than the status quo. “It is not a move away from competitive sport and what takes place on Saturday mornings. It’s just a broader way of looking at it, so we stay relevant. “Our new strategy focuses on responding to the wants and needs of today’s participants, par-
ticularly young people. We want to sustain traditional sports that Kiwis love, but need to respond to the growing interest in less formal active recreation. “If we lose our active, sporty lifestyle, there will be a high price to pay for us as a nation.” Tri NZ expressed disappointment with the decision. “We did not expect the level of reduction from Sport New Zealand towards our community initiatives,” chief executive Craig Waugh said. “The full reduction will not take effect until mid-2017. “In the meantime we look forward to further discussions with
Sport New Zealand to better understand their thinking.” The fear among NSOs is such decisions could result in job losses and weaken the respective sports’ influence in fostering inclusivity and talent at grassroots level. Contrary to the NSO cuts, Barry said investment into Regional Sports Trusts had been preserved, because of their role delivering to local and regional communities. Rousey-Holm rematch Fans will have to wait another eight months but a rematch between Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey is being targeted for July 9 in Las Vegas. UFC president Dana White has confirmed that Holm’s next fight will be against Rousey, who she defeated for the bantamweight title in Melbourne last month, ESPN reports. Rousey, who suffered a concussion in the defeat to Holm, has been given a six-month medical suspension by the UFC due to the extent of her injuries.- AFP

After winning round one without loss, Methven will look to kick off round two of the A-grade interclub tennis season in similar fashion at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre today. Today’s fixtures will be the last until the competition resumes on January 30, but are set to produce some exciting matches as South-
ern lock horns with Hampstead, Fairton face Allenton and Methven take on Tinwald. Last weekend’s action saw wins for Methven, Hampstead and Allenton. Methven posted a 4-2 win over Fairton, Hampstead matched that with a 4-2 victory over Tinwald and Allenton recorded their second win of the campaign, toppling Southern 4-2.
Methven’s clash with Tinwald is expected to offer some competitive match-ups. The division leaders were pushed right to the end by Tinwald as the two sides couldn’t be separated in a 4-4 draw in week one. Allenton will be hoping to add another win to their tally, but fell to a 5-3 loss the last time they met Fairton, who will have as-
pirations of climbing further up the ladder following last week’s loss. Hampstead will be determined to keep the pressure right on Methven at the points table’s summit with a victory over last placed Southern, and will be strong favourites after thumping today’s opponents 6-0 at the start of the season. Play will begin at 1.30pm.

Sevens gold not quite a foregone conclusion W hen it was announced that sevens rugby would be at the Rio Olympics next year, an awful lot of people happily put a tick in the ‘gold’ box for New Zealand’s medal tally. Timing is everything, and perhaps a decade ago, when our sevens side was overflowing with premium quality players that Sir Gordon Tietjens had unearthed, nurtured, tutored and turned into champions of the game, combined with the fact that not every country was yet convinced that sevens was a serious sport in itself, New Zealand would have been the hottest of hot things. If he could call on the likes of Amasio Valance, Christian Cullen, Dallas Seymour, Eric Rush, Rico Gear or Karl Te Nana to pad out his squad, things would indeed be looking golden. But things change, and it would be a brave punter who has put already put the house on an All
John McEnroe, sport’s original superbrat, is advocating the radical removal of umpires in a bid to liven up tennis. McEnroe made his stunning proposal while also recommending tiebreaks at four games all in the fifth and deciding set - rather than at 6-6 - in an effort to keep fans interested. But it’s the former world No.1’s call to get rid of chair umpires that is sure to spark furious debate. “There should be no umpires as well. That would maybe be a major innovation as well,” McEnroe told Tennis Podcast when asked what changes he’d like to introduce. “That could excite things along with a tighter format, quicker format.” - AAP
Black Sevens win next year. Overall, the New Zealanders are still the best team in the world, but the Olympics is a one-off deal, and the All Black Sevens simply don’t win that many tournaments any more; they win championships by being constantly in the top three or four and winning by sheer consistency. Losses to the United States (yes, more than one, in a couple of days) highlight exactly how much the minnows have caught up, with the attraction of the big prize next year as the carrot, pretty much a parallel with the Rugby World Cup, where suddenly every team is a threat to be taken seriously. A few injuries and the New Zealand camp was in total disarray last week in Dubai, that’s how fragile the team’s position at the top of the ladder is. It’s a huge challenge for the man who has already produced

many a miracle in the game; can he go to the well one more time, with pressures unimagined 10 years ago and dredge up two or three more absolute matchwinners to top off his stellar career as the best sevens coach ever? The fans are certainly keeping their fingers crossed. * * * * Is anybody bothering to pay to view the latest two or three Joseph Parker fights? If so, why? He’s been lined up with a series of patsies, who all provide him with a minute or two’s punching practice, while all the time he’s
talking up his chances against the current weirdo who holds the world title. It’s all reminiscent of David Tua‘s efforts of a few years ago, which came to nought when it really mattered, being found out when it came to the big, big time. Parker’s camp claims that a long list of top boxers are avoiding their man; is boxing really in such a pathetic state that nobody actually wants to fight anybody else? Boxing managers must rate right up there with car salesmen, TV evangelists and street-side drug dealers as the least respected professions anywhere. What would the champs of old, who regularly faced each other several times a year, think of the current circus? Parker looks like he has the goods to, at the very least, frighten the top guys, but how will we ever know?
Australian centre Andrew Bogut says it is going to take something very special to snap Golden State’s record-breaking start to the NBA season. The Warriors have made a remarkable beginning to their title defence and will take a 23-0 record into their clash against the Boston Celtics. Auckland outplayed Auckland City coach Ramon Tribulietx was left lamenting a missed opportunity on Thursday night. It wasn’t that the New Zealand side should have won - Sanfrecce Hiroshima were clearly the better side but Auckland City didn’t get the chance to test the J-League champions to the limit. After being almost flawless defensively in Morocco last year the Oceania champions gave up two soft goals. “That early goal set up the perfect game for them,” said Tribulietx. “It was always going to be difficult from there”. - AAP
Ban for hit on Reid Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has been banned for three matches over an off-the-ball incident with West Ham United’s Winston Reid, the Football Association announced yesterday. Germany captain Schweinsteiger caught Reid in the throat with his left elbow as they jostled for position while awaiting a free-kick in the first half of last Saturday’s 0-0 draw. The incident was missed by the match officials, but a panel of former elite referees decided that Schweinsteiger had indeed committed a red-card offence. - AFP

Rosgen Thompson has something to smile about this Christmas – a brand new Volkswagon Polo! She was one of five to win a new car in the Countdown Glorious Christmas Giveaway and the second person from Ashburton to take a major prize in the competition’s three-year history. Mrs Thompson, a meat worker for Anzco, picked up her new ride on Sunday, having learned of her good fortune three weeks ago. At first she didn’t believe the news, but she’s been smiling ever since it sunk in. “It’s very exciting, I love it – especially because it’s free,” Mrs
Thompson said. The shiny silver vehicle is her first new car and will replace her trusty 2004 Suzuki, which she plans to sell. Meanwhile, Tina Hayman also has a set of new wheels courtesy of Finesse Fitness Ashburton. She was rapt about the chance to drive the stylish Ford Fiesta Trend for the next three years, or for 60,000km. A regular at the gym for two years, Mrs Hayman’s name was drawn from about 1000 entries in the competition. It was the first time Finesse Fitness has run the promotion which offered a car at each of the company’s four gyms.

Investments market update Global Equity Markets While equity returns were flat (in New Zealand dollar terms) over the quarter, the last two months have provided positive returns as investor interest has returned to equity markets. Reviewing the individual equity markets Forsyth Barr monitors, the weakest quarterly performers were the United Kingdom, France and Hong Kong. The Hong Kong equity market was impacted by concerns surrounding mainland China growth rates while France reflected the recent terrorist attacks. German equity markets however have recovered and performed well since the issues surrounding their automotive industry surfaced.

Flatting for seniors top lifestyle option Sue Newman

arlier this week the foundations were laid for a project that could revolutionise aged care in the Ashburton District. People working in the district’s social agencies are concerned at the growing number of older people who are becoming socially isolated or who are unable to afford warm, secure accommodation. Pensioners who own their own home and who have money invested are set up for life, but for those who do not, with increasing age, life becomes pretty grim. If you have very little in the way of assets you may qualify for housing options provided by a local authority or a government and if you’re at the top end there is the option of homes in lifestyle villages. In the middle, however, there is a large group of people, some of whom are hanging on in the family home, struggling with maintenance and living costs and others who are struggling to pay their rent. Both groups often have one thing in common, a growing sense of social isolation and the constant worry of what their future holds. This week a project that offers new living options and new social opportunities was unveiled in Ashburton, the Abbeyfields concept of house sharing, flatting for seniors. It’s simple and it’s commonsense. One house, several en suite bedrooms, a large living area and a housekeeper who prepares meals. All that is available well within the average pension. The advantages are obvious – affordable living, companionship on tap and, and apart from looking after your own room, freedom from housework and home maintenance. The AbbeyfieldS houses are run by residents, managed by a community group and owned by the AbbeyfieldS parent company. The initial stumbling block is finding the land and funding the house build. The concept is a winner. The houses usually have between 10 and 12 bedrooms, but they can be built to suit the needs of a community. Methven or Hinds might opt for five or six bedrooms, Ashburton for more. The one thing that does not change is opportunity for an affordable, socially connected lifestyle. As a district, we owe it to our elderly to take a long, hard look at this concept and find a way to make it happen.

Massey University experts have released their 12 days of Christmas summer survival tips to help everyone stay sane, healthy and, at the very least, alive this festive season. Assistant lecturer in sport psychology Warrick Wood’s top tip was to keep moving. Exercise helped with mood, increased energy and was a fun way to hang with friends and family, he said. “Find fun ways to get your heart rate up – exercise shouldn’t be boring. Play backyard cricket, get out in the garden, head down to the beach. If you do something you enjoy, you’re much more likely to maintain that behaviour throughout the holiday period.” And, to help keep the kilos off, go easy on the kai. Nutrition and dietetic centre dietitian Miriam Mullard said on average people gained between one and two-and-a-half kilograms over the silly season. Healthy choices – such as starting each day with a healthy breakfast of wholegrain cereals or breads – kept hunger pangs at bay for the first half of the day. Five-a-day could be helped by lashings of seasonal fruit. It was easy to overindulge at Christmas, but little tricks could help, she said. “If possible, keep treats out of sight, and have healthy options on hand to keep temptation at bay. Try a handful of unsalted nuts, dried fruit, plain popcorn, wholegrain crackers or pretzels.” As for pouring down the throat, the message was less and more. Less booze, more water. pull back, you’re taking on too much fluid. 4. Savour your food and be aware of what you’re eating – only eat what you want to eat, this is the time to enjoy your favourites. 5. Remember the 3 Cs for a food poisoning-free Christmas – cook, chill and clean. 6. Rest those weary eyes. Get plenty of sleep, especially before driving. 7. Practice safe sex. No one wants an STD for Christmas. 8. Avoid the holiday debt trap by budgeting for gifts and ban last-minute buying. 9. Don’t put on a brave face this Christmas. Support those struggling with grief or depression. 10. Give the gift of peace by avoiding conflict. 11. his is the season of advent. A time of looking back at the first coming of Christ into the world and also a time of looking forward to his future coming into the world. Both of those momentous events have to do with God’s great purpose in restoring a ruined world. Both deal with the “hopes and fears of all the years” as the Christmas carol reminds us. Today, it seems, more people might be looking to Paris rather than Bethlehem for the source of hope to allay our fears. By that I mean the global get-together to thrash out an agreement on climate change. If religious fervour is to be

found flourishing today, then global warming is surely the nursery where it is propagated most enthusiastically. Strident claims are made - and to doubt them is to be cast into the realms of The Deniers. There is, it appears, no room for further questions, no time for reasoned debate. The seriousness is so great, the urgency so overwhelming, that we must act instantly and boldly - perhaps even giving unprecedented powers to the State to
control our lives. Such sentiments echo those who want much greater powers to deal with terrorists (though perhaps from another part of the political spectrum). In both cases there is the assumption that “we” are in control - and if things go wrong in this world, then “they” are to blame. Once we have found who to blame we can revile them and legislate them out of existence. This assumption - that the world and all its events are under final human control is an illusion. Worse still, it is an illusion that becomes idol worship and in our fanatical devotion to it we sow the seeds of our own destruc-
tion. Whether overtly religious like ISIS or overtly atheistic like North Korea, this idol worship of control leads to misery at every level of human existence. Perhaps it is time to cease from raging at “them”, who are to blame for all that is wrong, and to make peace with Him who is the Prince of Peace. Could this be the time for you to step back from the illusion of control? Time to respond to the One who came in person to set a troubled world to rights? In brief Whoops, wrong plane When crew members of a passenger plane reported sparks coming from an engine while taxiing at an airport in southern China, eight fire trucks responded within minutes. Then they covered the wrong plane with white foam. The mistake at the Fuzhou city airport was quickly amended and the firefighters turned their attention to the correct plane, but the other one — with passengers aboard — was delayed 10 hours and the entire incident delayed 30 flights, the airport said in a statement. The Air China flight had reported the problems in a right-side engine of a Boeing 737800 for a flight headed to Beijing. By the time firefighters arrived four minutes later, engines were switched off. However, a Fuzhou Airlines plane of the same make had exhaust fumes coming from its tail. The firefighters sprayed the Fuzhou Airlines plane with foam until the airport’s control centre alerted them to the mistake, and then they sprayed the right plane, the airport said. - AP

Draft climate deal emerges Negotiators from China, the US and other nations haggled into the early morning yesterday over how to share the burden of fighting climate change and paying for a trillion-dollar transition to clean energy on a global scale. Some delegates said an elusive climate pact was in sight heading into the final scheduled day of talks outside Paris while others said a new draft presented by French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius allowed rich nations to shift the responsibility of fighting global warming to the developing world. “We are going backwards,” said Gurdial Singh Nijar of Malaysia, the head of a bloc of hardline countries that also includes India, China and Saudi Arabia. They have put up the fiercest
resistance against attempts by the US, the European Union and other wealthy nations to make emerging economies pitch in to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and help the poorest countries cope with climate change. The issue, known as “differentiation” in United Nations climate lingo, was expected to be one of the last to be resolved. US Secretary of State John Kerry zipped in and out of negotiation rooms as delegates broke into smaller groups to iron out their differences. “We’re working on it,” Kerry said as he emerged from one meeting room with an entourage of security agents and State Department aides. Nijar said it was unreasonable
to expect countries like Malaysia to rapidly shift from fossil fuels – the biggest source of man-made greenhouse gas emissions – to cleaner sources of energy. “We cannot just switch overnight ... and go to renewables,” he said, on a coffee break between meetings at 1.30am. “If you remove differentiation you create very serious problems for developing countries.” Diplomats from 196 governments are trying to forge a global pact in Paris to slow global warming by collectively slashing emissions. It’s the first time all countries are expected to pitch in – the previous emissions treaty only included rich countries. The 27-page draft – two pages shorter than a previous version – included a long-term goal of
keeping global warming “well below” 2 degrees Celsius, while pursuing efforts to limit the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C. The draft also said governments would aim to peak the emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases “as soon as possible” and strive to reach “emissions neutrality” by the second half of the century. That was weaker language than in previous drafts that included more specific emissions cuts and timeframes. Emissions neutrality wasn’t defined in the text. Previous versions have included similar terms that are generally understood to mean no more emissions than the Earth can naturally absorb. - AP

First plane-load of refugees arrive in Canada The first Canadian government plane carrying Syrian refugees arrived in Toronto late yesterday where they were greeted by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is pushing forward with his pledge to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of February. The arrival of the military flight carrying 163 refugees stands in stark contrast to the US, which plans to take in 10,000 Syrian refugees over the next year and where Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump caused a worldwide uproar with a proposal to temporarily block Muslims from entering the US. The flight arrived just before midnight carrying the first of two large groups of Syrian refugees to arrive in the country by
government aircraft. “This is a wonderful night, where we get to show not just a plane-load of new Canadians what Canada is all about, we get to show the world how to open our hearts and welcome in people who are fleeing extraordinarily difficult situations,” Trudeau said to staff and volunteers who were waiting to process the refugees. All 10 of Canada’s provincial premiers support taking in the refugees and members of the opposition, including the Conservative party, attended the welcoming. Trudeau was also joined by the ministers of immigration, health and defense, as well as Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and Toronto Mayor John
Tory. In the US, several Republican governors have tried to stop the arrival of Syrian refugees in their states in the wake of the deadly attacks blamed on Islamic extremists in Paris and California. The first flight arrived in Toronto before midnight and another will land in Montreal today. The planes, both military aircraft, will carry a total of about 300 Syrian refugees. Canadians eager to show their support for the newcomers weren’t deterred by the fact that they couldn’t do so face-to-face as the refugees were processed in a secure area. A handful of people gathered at the international arrivals gate at Pearson airport bearing signs and gifts. Andrew Harris, 51,
said he wanted to counter the fearful messaging about Muslims that has circulated since the Paris attacks. He held up a large yellow sign that read “Welcome to Canada,” saying that even if the arriving refugees don’t see it, the positive words won’t go unnoticed. The headline on the front page of Toronto Star, Canada’s largest circulation newspaper, read: “Welcome to Canada,” with the Arabic translation below: Ahlan wa sahlan. “Welcome.” The front page included an editorial. “You’ll find the place a little bigger than Damascus or Aleppo, and a whole lot chillier. But friendly for all that. We’re a city that cherishes its diversity; it’s our strength,” it reads. - AP
Eat order issued A federal judge ordered a California man suspected of trying to aid the Islamic State group to eat dinner or be force-fed. The order from Judge David O. Carter was given to 24-year-old Muhanad Badawi, who has been refusing to eat for three weeks. “Mr. Badawi, this is going to end today,” said Carter, who pulled out his own money to pay for the meal before the marshals in charge of Badawi said they would take care of it. Badawi has not made it entirely clear why he’s refusing to eat, insisting he’d not on a hunger strike and saying he wants to fast on certain days. - AP
Ex-cop found guilty A former Oklahoma City police officer was convicted yesterday of rape related to accusations that he victimised 13 women on his police beat in a minority, low-income neighbourhood. Daniel Holtzclaw, 29, faces a possible sentence of life in prison because of the conviction. He also faced more than 30 counts, including sexual battery and forcible oral sodomy. The allegations against Holtzclaw brought new attention to the problem of sexual misconduct committed by law enforcement officers. - AP
Body on beach The body of a man, whose hands and feet were believed to be bound, has been found off a Perth beach. The man in his 50s was found face down in the water north of Trigg Beach during a jet ski patrol yesterday around midday. Detectives are working to identify him. - AAP
Charged with murder A former Northern Territory police officer has been charged with murdering his wife. Louis Mahoney, 42, was charged this week with the 2009 murder of Lainie Coldwell in Charleville in Queensland’s south-west. NT Police Commander Michael Murphy confirmed Mr Mahoney had served in the Territory’s police force for five years as a general duties constable. - AAP

IS finance chief killed in air strike The Islamic State group’s finance chief has been confirmed killed in a coalition air strike last month, US officials say. Abu Saleh was killed in late November, US military spokesman Colonel Steve Warren said in a videoconference yesterday from Baghdad, calling him “one of the most senior and experienced members” of the group’s financial network. The US government’s envoy for the anti-IS fight, Brett McGurk, said on Twitter that Abu Saleh was killed along with two associates “as part of coalition campaign to destroy ISIL’s financial infrastructure”, describing him as the group’s “finance minister”. Abu Saleh’s real name is Muwaffaq Mustafa Muhammad al-
Karmush, described in a State Department terrorist blacklist as a 42-year-old Iraqi. “Killing him and his predecessors exhausts the knowledge and talent needed to co-ordinate funding within the organisation,” Warren said. The military spokesmen said two other figures in IS fundraising networks were also killed in coalition air strikes in late November. They were identified as Abu Mariam, an enforcer and senior leader in IS extortion networks, and Abu Waqman al-Tunis, who Warren said co-ordinated IS’s transfer of people, weapons and information. In London, the US Treasury’s acting under secretary for terror-
ism and financial crimes, Adam Szubin, said IS derived most of its funding from economic activity in the territory it controls. It has reaped more than $US500 million ($A690 million) in black market oil sales, looted bank vaults captured in Iraq and Syria, and raised millions more through extortion. But to run what amounts to a mini-state, it needs steady and renewable sources of funding, and to do that it needs access to the international financial system to move money and import supplies, according to Szubin. “We are targeting both of these dependencies - ISIL’s ability to generate revenue, and its ability to use that revenue,” he said. - AFP

Prominent tycoon missing The Chinese conglomerate that owns Club Med suspended trading of its shares yesterday following a news report that its chairman, one of China’s most prominent business leaders, is missing. Fosun International employees were unable to contact Guo Guangchang beginning at midday Thursday, the magazine Caixin said on its website. It cited what it said were messages on social media that Guo was last seen with police at an airport in Shanghai. Guo’s disappearance comes in the midst of a sweeping anticorruption crackdown led by President Xi Jinping in which dozens of executives at stateowned companies have been detained or questioned. Businesspeople in previous investigations have been held for weeks for questioning with no public notice. Fosun and its pharmaceutical unit suspended trading of their shares in Hong Kong. They cited the pending release of an announcement with “inside information”. Phone calls to Fosun’s media and investor relations departments weren’t answered.
Guo Guangchang, one of the country’s most prominent business leaders, is missing. Guo, 48, is one of China’s biggest investors abroad. Fosun, which he co-founded in the 1990s, has businesses in real estate, steel, mining and retailing. The Financial Times dubbed him “China’s Warren Buffett” for following the legendary American investor’s approach of using the cash flow from insurance operations to buy other businesses. Fosun won a bidding war this year to take over Club Mediterranee, the French resort opera-
tor. Last year, it paid 1 billion euros for Portugal’s biggest insurance company, Caixa Seguros. In 2013, it bought the 60-storey tower at 1 Chase Manhattan Plaza in New York City for $725 million. In the United States, it owns Meadowbrook Insurance Group Inc. and 20 per cent of insurer Ironshore Inc. Guo had denied earlier he was the target of a graft investigation. - AP

RM Sotheby’s offered the vintage cars in its Driven by Disruption sale. The 1956 Ferrari 290 MM, chas-
sis 0626 was built for Formula One racing legend Juan Manuel Fangio. The car was specially designed for the five-time F1 world champion and was one of only four 290 MMs to be built. It has never crashed despite a racing career that lasted until 1964. The $28 million to $32 million pre-sale estimate made it one of
the most valuable cars to come to auction. A Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta that sold for $38.1 million at Bonhams in 2014 holds the record for any car at auction. Officials search for missed red flags ahead of shootings The US government appears not to have picked up on extremist messages exchanged during the online courtship two years ago between the American-born man accused in the California shootings and his future wife in Pakistan, according to closed-door briefings to Congress provided by federal officials yesterday. American officials say Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, discussed martyrdom and jihad online as early as 2013. But the couple never surfaced on law enforcement’s radar and Malik was able to enter the US on a fiancée visa last year despite having professed radical views online, raising concerns among lawmakers about whether any red flags were missed in the last two years. Meanwhile, the investigation into the shootings that left 14 dead last week continued in San Bernardino, where an FBI dive team searched a small, urban lake about 5 kilometres north of the shooting site. FBI Director James Comey and other senior American officials briefed members of Congress on Capitol Hill about aspects of their continuing investigation into the terror attack. One official said information that the FBI has been able to glean about the couple comes from an examination of their electronic devices, rather than intercepts. “Everyone’s asking the same questions about how it is that law enforcement didn’t know, or intelligence officials didn’t know — that they could have flown under the radar and nothing gave an indication
that they were a threat,” said Rep. Jim Langevin, a Rhode island Democrat and member of the House Homeland Security Committee. Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said it was understanding that Malik was subjected to an in-person interview during the application process for a visa. Republican Rep. Will Hurd of Texas, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, said there’s currently no evidence Malik’s radicalisation would have been readily apparent when she was evaluated for a fiancée visa. “I don’t think there was missed information,” he said. “It appears that there was not any evidence that would have been discoverable during an interview for a visa.” He declined to discuss what specifically led investigators to conclude that the couple had radicalised independently as early as 2013, but suggested the information did not come from intercepts. New revelations show a much deeper connection between Farook and Enrique Marquez, his friend who bought the assault rifles used in the shooting, than previously was disclosed. Marquez has not been charged with a crime. More than three years ago, Marquez purchased the highpowered weapons that Farook and his wife used to open fire on a holiday gathering of Farook’s fellow health inspectors December 2, killing 14 people. Farook and Malik were killed hours later in a shootout with police, leaving behind a 6-month-old daughter. - AP

The Rangitata Diversion Race Management Limited (RDRML) is a successful regional irrigation scheme “putting water to work for Mid Canterbury”. Rangitata Race is 67km long extending from an intake on the Rangitata River at Klondyke to a discharge at Highbank on the Rakaia River. This role reports to the Operations Manager. The RDR operates a 24 hours per day, 365 days a year operation and therefore this position is in part a rostered position.
