The 2016 Ashburton Mitre 10 Mega Christmas in the Park proved the largest yet with more than 11,000 people turning out for the fourth annual celebration at the Ashburton Domain.

The 2014 Christmas in the Park hosted 6000 and that number increased by a third to 9000 a year later, but this year’s festivities raised the bar again.

Special guest artists including Kiwi music icon Dave Dobbyn performed before the strong crowd.

The evening’s line-up also includes home-grown artists Julia Bell, Layna

Hunt, Luke Glendining, Chris Woods, Sarah Heney, Matt van den Yssel and the Danceworx Ashburton crew.

The night was rounded off with a mega fireworks display, which finished just in time before the rain set in.

Event organiser Carmen Lye said the evening proved a resounding success.

“It was a total success,” she said.

“Dave Dobbyn was awesome, it was definitely the best yet.”

Lye said Christmas in the Park continues to grow every year, and is the product of enthusiasm and generosity from

the local community and businesses.

“We’d really like to thank Talbot Security and the police for having a presence there and all of our sponsors,” she said.

“Local businesses put in a whole lot of money and time, we raised over $40,000, so it’s a great community effort and it’s brilliant to see it all come together,” she said.

March gets message across

Lotto adds $2.7m to Kaikoura rebuild

Ashburton Zonta members put their weight behind the annual violence against women campaign on Saturday during a community march.

The march wrapped up this year’s say NO to violence against women and girls campaign and culminated in the release of orange balloons.

The campaign, which began in November 2012, features the service and advocacy actions of Zonta clubs and districts to prevent and end violence against women and girls in their local communities.

The campaign also highlights Zonta International’s ongoing efforts to end violence against women and girls through the Zonta International Strategies to End Violence against Women (ZISVAW) programme and through Zonta’s partnerships with the United Nations and its agencies. Throughout the 16 Days of Activism, from November 25 to December 10, the Zonta Says NO to violence against women campaign encouraged Zonta clubs and districts to participate by sharing their new and ongoing actions to end violence against women and girls.

Meanwhile the country’s newest millionaire is yet to come forward.

The $2.7m profit made from Saturday night’s Lotto draw are being donated to help the people of Kaikoura and the surrounding regions.

Lotto NZ chief executive Wayne Pickup said along with the $2.7 million donation to Kaikoura raised from the hundreds of thousands of tickets purchased, another 60,000 people won prizes in Saturday night’s draw.

“Caring about our communities and each other is part of the Kiwi way of life and it was heartwarming to see Lotto players really embrace this special draw to help the people of Kaikoura.

The $10 million Powerball prize was also drawn and the ticket was purchased online by an Aucklander. The prize has not been claimed.

Internal Affairs minister Peter Dunne said the contribution would make a real difference to those affected and their communities.

“I want to thank Lotto NZ and the NZ Lottery Grants Board for enabling this to happen and, of course the people from all around New Zealand who expressed so much generosity and community spirit in the face of this adversity”, Mr Dunne said.

The profits will be transferred to the NZ Lottery Grants Board who will distribute the money to support earthquake relief in Kaikoura/Hurunui and the Marlborough regions.

Bacteria found in supermarket chicken Nearly two-thirds of supermarket chicken has tested positive for campylobacter in a study by a consumer watchdog.

Analysis of 40 fresh chicken products bought from supermarkets by Consumer NZ found 26 had campylobacter.

The bacteria is the most common cause of gastrointestinal illness in New Zealand and last

year there were more than 6000 cases.

“The bug’s presence in the products we tested doesn’t mean you’ll get sick from the chicken but it increases the chances,” Consumer chief executive Sue Chetwin said.

She said half of campylobacter cases was attributed to fresh chicken.

Those who become infected with campylobacter can suffer from severe diarrhoea and vomiting and in some cases it can be deadly.

Chickens carry the bug in their guts and faeces and it can can survive if raw chicken isn’t cooked properly. Poor food hygiene practice can also spread the bacteria, contaminating oth-

er foods and food preparation areas. The NZ test mirrored results of a 2008 study in the UK which found around 65 per cent of raw chicken on sale at supermarkets and butchers was contaminated with the bacteria.

Pike families take control of road The families of the men who died in the Pike River coal mine say the owner of the road accessing the mine has given control of it to them.

The families of the 29 men who died in the mine in November 2010 have been fighting the sealing of the mine, saying the drift, a tunnel leading to the mine proper, is safe to enter.

The mine was privately owned at the time of the explosions but is now owned by state-owner coal miner Solid Energy, which says the mine is not safe to enter.

The families have been protesting on the road to the mine, and yesterday posted on social media “there’s been a wee development”.

. . . we’ll try hard to be reasonable landlords. We’l l allow access for genuine emergencies, if they ask nicely.

“Turns out, Solid Energy don’t own a big slice of the road to the Pike River access road, and don’t have any legal right to access it.”

Aust man saves NZ swimmers An Australian man has saved a woman and a six-year-old girl at a popular New Zealand swimming spot and then went home to get his dive gear to recover the body of a young man.

Rob Horne, who grew up in Western Australia and lives in Cromwell, was with a group in a car heading to lunch at a Central Otago vineyard on Saturday afternoon when a woman flagged them down.

“She goes someone’s drowning, there’s a kid – they’re drowning, they’re drowning,” he said.

He knew the woman who flagged them down because he’d cleaned out her irrigation pond earlier in the day using his dive gear. The woman was feeding ducks with her grandson when she saw four people in trouble at the Bannockburn inlet, a popular swimming spot.

Mr Horne said he was in the middle seat of the car and jumped out with a friend.

“I just jumped out and ran as fast as I could and chucked my shirt off and my boots and dived

straight in.” They saved the woman and the girl who were a few metres out in water.

“When I grabbed the lady she had just gone under the water.

She was going.”

The girl was on the woman’s shoulders.

Then a man yelled “my son, my son”.

“I thought what’s going on?

Is there another person? I can’t even see him.”

Mr Horne and his friend swam out to the pontoon but the visibility in the water was poor only about a metre - and they couldn’t find the young man.

He got his dive gear from home, 5km away, and after a 20 minute grid search, found the young man’s body.

He believes the group of four had recently moved to the area and they couldn’t swim.

He believes the young man had the girl on his shoulder and then got into trouble and passed the child to the woman but there was no sign of the man by the time he arrived.

The Pike River families plan to go to parliament in Wellington tomorrow to present the new prime minister with a new legal and technical plan to allow for re-entry of the drift “to retrieve evidence of what happened to our boys, and any remains which may lie there”.

Last week, Solid Energy published an open letter in newspapers explaining its position.

It rejected claims a “quick” inspection of the 2.3km drift, or entry shaft, is safe, that it is not listening to families’ experts, talking to the families and acting with indecent haste.

Policies to be reviewed

A planned review of government policy decisions will take on a sharper focus in the wake of Prime Minister John Key’s resignation.

Mr Key is set to formally resign today with his deputy Bill English poised to be anointed his successor by the National caucus.

Paula Bennett will be new deputy prime minister and Steven Joyce is set to take over as finance minister.

He says Mr Key’s shock decision would mean gearing up for next year’s election would be done with a new perspective.

“There will be a freshness of

some new policy positions,” Mr Joyce told TVNZ’s Q&A. “It is quite an opportunity for a stocktake for us.”

Mr Joyce said he had already discussed the scope of the review with Mr English but played down a sweeping shift in direction.

“After eight years we were very conscious of the need to do this anyway.

“We’re heading into an election for a fourth term – you have to go through a process of head checking yourself on all your policy positions. Many will stay the same and

a few will change,” he said.

Mr Joyce refused to go into detail on what policies could be tinkered with but said the goals of paying down debt, investing in public services and investing in infrastructure would remain central.

“One of hallmarks and virtues of this government is that it has been sensible, predictable and pragmatic.”

Tax cuts remained a possibility.

“No politician should forget that the money they get to spend comes from hardworking Kiwis.”

Dancers take us on a Christmas journey Dancers ranging from tiny beginners to seniors were on stage in the Ashburton Trust Event Centre at the weekend for DanceWorx Ashburton’s end-of-year performance.

The students, aged from three to 19 years, performed the Hans Christian Anderson tale, The Little Match Girl, that tells the tale of a cold and hungry young girl trying to sell matches at Christmas time.

She watches the joy of Christmas that others share but that is not hers.

Hayley Nolan, 10, played the lead character in the show.

DanceWorx director and tutor Charmaine Quaid has produced dozens of dance performances for Ashburton audiences providing thousands of youngsters with an opportunity to enjoy the magic of telling stories through dance.

In brief Plenty of arrests More than a dozen people including four youths were arrested at Christmas in the Park on Saturday night. The 13 arrests made were all for offences relating to alcohol and disorder, a police spokesman said. A further 10 youths were taken home by police from the annual event and had their parents called. Last year only four people were arrested at the event, which is now in its 23rd year.

Police presence was highly visible at the event in Auckland’s Domain and extra staff were also put on trains throughout the city.

Tractor rolls One person is dead after a tractor rolled on a farm in Te Arai, north of Auckland yesterday. The fire service was called to the incident on Ocean View Road near Wellsford shortly after 9am, a spokesman said. “There was a tractor accident on a farm,” he said. “A tractor’s rolled and one person has died.” It was understood the person became trapped when the tractor rolled and died at the scene.

Trampers caught out Two trampers on Mt Ruapehu have walked to safety after calling emergency services for help after getting lost. A man and woman alerted police about 7.30pm on Saturday that they were lost after setting off on the round the mountain track from Whakapapa Village to Whakapapaiti Hut at lunchtime. A team of LandSAR volunteers found the trampers shortly after 4am yesterday as poor weather conditions prevented the use of a helicopter. Both were carrying some warm clothing and food but were found huddled in their sleeping bags. A man who set off an emergency locator beacon on the Whanganui River area on Saturday night near Whakahoro was rescued by a jet boat. - NZME

Bowled over by his success

Harry McMillan has achieved his best bowling innings ever.

The opening bowler for the Ashburton College Year 9 and 10 cricket team claimed figures every bowler can only dream of.

In seven overs of swing bowling Harry clean-bowled, rapped batsman on the pads and forced a mistimed shot, to walk away with seven wickets with only two runs conceded.

It was a couple of weekends ago when the 14-year-old took the new ball against the Selwyn Year 9 and 10 side at the Darfield Domain.

With a grassy pitch and clouds filling the sky, it was a swing bowler’s paradise – but Harry didn’t think it would be that good.

The left-arm quickly hit the right line and length and his ability to swing the ball both ways only helped his cause as the batsmen tried to guess which shots

to play, and frequently guessed wrongly.

The last time Harry’s speed was measured he clocked 96kmm, but that was in the off-season, he reckons he was quicker against Selwyn.

“I think probably between 100105(km/h).”

It was fast enough to beat six of the batsmen as five of his deliveries rattled into the stumps and one crashed into the pads.

As a result of Harry’s efforts, Selwyn were reduced to 60 runs which Ashburton chased down with relative ease.

He is delighted with his bowling and so were his parents, Harry said.

“Dad gave me a good pat on the back.”

Harry frequently trains with the 1st XI team and although he gets a bit of the short stuff, Harry lets his bowling do the talking.

Ashburton College will look with keen interest at Harry and his development into a crucial and dangerous fast bowler.

Ashburton College Year 9 cricket team bowler Harry McMillan will remember his efforts with the red leather for years to come after he bagged 7 wickets for two runs.

Murdered woman named 100 face prosecution over fight More than 100 people could be prosecuted after illegally streaming Saturday night’s Parker fight over the internet.

And Sky spokeswoman Kirsty Way is warning them that the damages sought could be upped from their last court case. Way said the number of streamers “reached into the triple digits”.

The pay-per-view price for the event was $59.95.

“That is disappointing it’s widely known that we were going to be watching and acting yet people have still gone ahead and done it when the courts have shown they agree with our stance on copyright.

“We will look at getting more forceful with what we’re seeking in way of damages.”

On Friday seven people were ordered to pay $100 in nominal damages and $2670 in costs each after they were found guilty of illegally streaming the Parker and Solomon Haumono fight.

Way said Sky might look at seeking more than $100 if people continue to flout the law.

“We might have to look at whether that’s enough of a warning.”

Way said their reports will come through this week and they will take legal action “very quickly” after that.

She wouldn’t comment on how their large monitoring team go about finding streams and taking them down. “It makes sense to keep that kind of information to ourselves.”

Police have named the 30-yearold woman murdered in her Upper Hutt home as they narrow their focus on four men seen in the area.

Lois Rita Tolley was found dead in her house by police in Ward Street, Trentham, early on Saturday.

“As a result of fresh evidence, police can advise that we are now looking for a firearm and knife believed to be involved in the death of Lois,” Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee said yesterday.

Police are working at Ms Tolley’s house and a post-mortem

examination has been carried out.

Just before the incident, at about midnight on Friday, four men were seen jogging south along Wilford Street towards Ward Street.

One of the young men was described as particularly distressed and one was carrying a long rectangular object.

They are all described as about 182cm tall and wearing dark clothing, with hooded tops.

Police are calling for the men to come forward, and say good progress is being made in the investigation.

“This is an incredibly sad and stressful time for the family, who police are supporting through an incredibly difficult time so close to Christmas,” Det Sen Sgt Mckee said.

Many of Ms Tolley’s family live in Australia, according to Fairfax NZ reports, while she lived alone with her cats.

Ms Tolley is the youngest of four children and has a number of nieces and nephews.

Breaking into television

Ashburton actor Georgie Sivier is breaking into the world of television, and having a lot of fun doing it.

The Big Little Theatre Company tutor is among six core cast members in a satirical comedy sitcom called Creeps.

A pilot episode has been filmed by 03 Productions, and is being shopped to major Kiwi television networks.

“Hopefully we will be bought by a network then we can make our first season,” Sivier said.

She plays Georgia Silver, a character similar to herself in some ways, but innocent to the point of being brutally honest, and thus communicating with her friends in some cutting ways.

Sivier describes the nature of the sitcom as a cross between Friends and The Office, and is confident it will be picked up and popular with audiences.

At 22, Sivier has a vast body of acting experience behind her.

She is a Big Little graduate and as well as tutoring at the company, has written and presented her own plays, often to sell-out crowds, in Ashburton and at the Nelson Fringe Festival, and has directed for the Methven Theatre Company.

She recently moved to Christchurch, where along with doing professional television work, she is establishing Playspace Theatre Company as well as getting into stand-up comedy. Stand up fits perfectly well with her experience as a writer and

actor, she said.

“As lots of people know, acting doesn’t generate a whole lot of income. The most cost-effective way to put on shows is a quick turnaround, not having long rehearsal times. So I’m used to doing shows which are half devised and half improvised,” she said.

“Which is terrifying,” she added, however, once you had been on stage a few times you got used to it.

“Other times you bomb and you know that’s just the nature of it. For every call-back I get there’s another four rejection letters waiting. You have to get used to failing if you are in this kind of industry.”

She performed with stand-up comedy companies after being asked to join them following performing at open mic nights. And for her latest sitcom gig, she had successfully auditioned for this after spotting a street poster seeking actors for the show in Christchurch.

Live theatre remains a passion, and Sivier is continuing to stage shows while establishing her new theatre company.

Her popular one-woman show This Is The Story will stage at the Pegasus Arms in Christchurch tonight at 7pm.

Balancing act of tourism against infrastructure Sue Newman

I

t’s an odd thing to be getting tetchy about but it seems that Kiwis are not happy about the growing numbers of tourists flocking to our shores.

Tourism might be one of our biggest dollar earners, but it appears not everyone is happy about that.

A ‘mood of the nation’ survey indicates that while many New Zealanders feel positive about growing tourist numbers, the size of the discontented group is increasing. They’re saying that while there might be economic benefits in having more tourists coming to New Zealand, there are also plenty of negatives they say are being overlooked.

Yes, tourists clog our roads and often their driving creates a hazard of its own and yes, they make it difficult for Kiwis to access some of the things we expect to access without queues, but if we capped tourist numbers we’d be losing out on many fronts.

There’s been ongoing debate over ways in which the impact on the infrastructure of smaller communities with significant tourist attractions can be lessened. Close to home that could be Methven. While our ski village has a low year-round population, numbers swell many times over during the winter.

It’s the same in places such as Queenstown and Tekapo.

The infrastructures of small towns that have become tourist towns were not built to accommodate large numbers of users.

And it’s not fair that the yearround residents should be forced to cough up to run repairs, to expand or to enhance their infrastructure for tourist use.

There’s been debate about developing a tourist tax.

This could be a bed tax, a higher arrival fee or a levy of some kind.

It all sounds good in theory, but the acid test would come in how this was applied and how the funds gathered were used.

It would be all too easy for this money to be simply absorbed into the great tax pool and disappear.

Applying a levy to every inbound tourist and using that money for improving facilities in New Zealand’s tourist hot spots is a great idea, but before the first dollar is collected, let’s take a look at the formula that will be used when the funds are divvied up.

Wrapping up the year that was 2

016 has been a year of change in many respects.

In Selwyn and Ashburton we had a change of mayor, while on the international stage we saw surprise results in the US election and in the UK referendum on whether to remain in or leave the EU. The Kaikoura earthquake brought huge change to the landscape and the communities of the surrounding area and of course the recent decision by our Prime Minister John Key to step aside from his role as leader of our country was another surprise change.

Life is full of change – both positive and negative.

changes that will be of benefit to individuals and society as a whole.

One thing that I really want to change is the prevalence of family violence in New Zealand.

As my colleague Jo Goodhew discussed in her column last week, we have made this issue a priority by developing a wholeof-government strategy to tackle family and sexual violence.

This includes overhauling the

laws around how family violence offences are dealt with in the courts and trialing new ways of responding to and preventing violence in the community.

Another change that I have been involved in overseeing as a Minister this year is the revolution in connectivity that is occurring throughout New Zealand.

The government’s ultra-fast broadband (UFB) rollout is ahead of schedule and 69 per cent complete.

Connections recently passed the 300,000 mark, with nearly 50,000 connections occurring in the quarter ended September alone.

Uptake of UFB nationwide has increased to 28.3 per cent and we are seeing this transform communities and businesses while

bringing jobs to the regions.

However, change can also bring with it new problems.

For example, technological change, which is in most respects positive, has brought with it the new problem of cyberbullying.

Through my ministerial work, I have this year overseen the establishment of Netsafe as the agency responsible for receiving, assessing, and investigating complaints about online harassment or cyber-bullying.

People experiencing cyberbullying can now contact Netsafe seven-days-a-week for advice and support, and I would strongly encourage you to do so if you or anyone you know has been a victim of this kind of harassment.

29 killed in blast

Turkey’s Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu says two blasts after an Istanbul soccer match killed have 29 people and wounded 166 others.

The twin Saturday night bombings inflicted high casualties among police, killing 27 officers, as well as two civilians.

In an address early yesterday, the minister said 10 people had been arrested in connection with the attacks.

The explosions took place shortly after the conclusion of a football match between Besiktas and Bursaspor at the Vodafone Arena, on the European side of

Turkey’s largest city. Two explosions were heard late on Saturday night, the first near the Vodafone Arena and the second in a park in the general vicinity of the sports stadium.

Soylu indicated that the first may have been be a car bomb and the other a suicide bomber.

The authorities imposed a partial broadcast ban on the incident, as is usual after such incidents in Turkey, hindering access to information.

Official information on the number of casualties was not issued for around four

hours after the blast, reporters in Istanbul said.

The Besiktas sports club “vehemently” condemned the attack near its home stadium in Istanbul.

No group has claimed responsibility.

There have been a number of bombings in Istanbul, Ankara and other areas in Turkey since last year.

Some bombs, notably those targeting security forces, have been claimed by Kurdish militants while other attacks are blamed on Islamic State.

Big shoes to fill Arnold Schwarzenegger, the star of the new version of Celebrity Apprentice, is unfazed that US President-elect Donald Trump retains a producer’s stake in the show. Schwarzenegger said that it’s just business, comparable to his situation when he became California’s governor and retained a screen credit and kept earning royalties for the Terminator movie. “So, I think this is a contract that he had and I think it’s great that he was part of it,” Schwarzenegger said.

Replacing Trump as boss in the reality show’s boardroom meant “big shoes to fill,” he said.

Tokyo breaks ground on new stadium Tokyo held a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday for a $1.5 billion National Stadium to host the 2020 Olympic Games.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike and other dignitaries launched the construction at the site of the demolished National Stadium, which was used during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, by putting their hands on a glass sphere that rotated through pastels of the colours of the Olympic logo.

The ceremony ended with a video replete with computer graphics showing how the stadium is expected to look and function once completed by November 2019.

Work on the stadium in the centre of the city fell behind schedule because the government abandoned the original design amid spiralling costs and complaints over its scale and appearance.

Koike, Tokyo’s first female governor, took office in July pledging to use her platform to host a cost-efficient and environmentally friendly 2020 Olympics.

She has lambasted organisers of the 2020 games for failing to keep costs under control.

An expert panel she appointed put the price tag of the 2020 Games at over $30 billion, barring drastic cost-cutting measures, a more than a four-fold increase from the initial estimate when the city was awarded the games in 2013.

Fans of the old stadium, built in the late 1950s, had lobbied to keep and renovate it. But in the end the government opted to replace it with a more modern facility.

Kengo Kuma, the architect of the new, open-air stadium, chose a wooden lattice design that echoes traditional styles seen in Japanese shrines and pagodas. It is intended to blend in with surrounding parkland and will be structured to minimize costs for heating and cooling.

The structure will use Japanese-grown larch in its wood and steel composite roof and prefabricated panels to help speed the work along and contain costs.

Crowded church collapses The roof of a crowded church collapsed onto worshippers in southern Nigeria at the weekend, killing at least 60 people, witnesses and an official said.

The Reigners Bible Church International in Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom state, was still under construction and workers had been rushing to finish it in time for Saturday’s ceremony to ordain founder Akan Weeks as a bishop, congregants said.

Hundreds of people, including Governor Udom Emmanuel, were inside when metal girders crashed onto worshippers and the corrugated iron roof caved in, they said. Emmanuel and Weeks, who preached that God will make his followers rich, escaped unhurt.

Bodies of at least 60 victims have been retrieved but the toll could mount as a crane removes debris, according to a rescue official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to reporters.

Five sharks caught Five great white sharks have been caught in northern NSW two days after controversial shark nets were deployed. A 3.2-metre female great white shark was captured in the new Sharpes Beach net on Saturday, the Department of Primary Industries said. Four smaller sharks ranging in size from 2.37-metres to three-metres were also caught in SMART drumlines at Lennox Head, South Ballina and Evans Head. All five were captured, tagged and released alive. They will continue to be tracked as part of the coastal surveillance programme.

In 2014, 116 people died when a multi-story guesthouse of the Synagogue Church of All Nations collapsed in Lagos, Nigeria’s

Two structural engineers, Joshua and church trustees have been accused of criminal negligence and involuntary manslaughter after a coroner found the build-

Greece’s Parliament has passed a budget of continued austerity as mandated by the country’s creditors, but which forecasts robust growth for 2017. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras says it will mark Greece’s “final exit” from its nearly decade-long financial crisis. The budget adds more than 1 billion euros in new taxes, mostly indirect taxes on items from phone calls to alcohol. It also cuts spending by over 1 billion euros. The budget was backed by the left-dominated ruling coalition and opposed by all other parties.

It passed by a vote of 152-146 on Saturday. Despite the continued austerity, Tsipras predicted that 2017 will be a “landmark year” with 2.7 per cent economic growth.

Call for diesel car ban

2775 tourists rescued after Indian storm

Doctors and health professionals have called on London Mayor Sadiq Khan to ban all diesel cars from the UK capital. Campaign group Doctors Against Diesel held a protest in London, claiming 9400 Londoners die prematurely each year as a result of breathing in toxic diesel fumes. Paris, Madrid, Mexico City and Athens have all committed to banning diesel vehicles by 2025. A spokesman for the mayor said Khan has no legal powers to ban cars in the city.

A fleet of ships and helicopters has been used evacuate 2775 tourists, including many foreigners, stranded due to a cyclonic storm off eastern India.

The tourists were stuck on Havelock and Neil islands as the storm, known as Vardah, developed over the Bay of Bengal. The islands are part of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago.

Officials said yesterday the number of stranded was higher than the initial estimate of 1400 as rescue personnel found more tourists during the operation launched on Friday.

“The evacuation involving eight ships and seven helicopters continued overnight and was completed on Saturday morning.

All tourists are safe and taken

care of,” regional disaster management chief Raajiv Yaduvanshi said.

About 350 foreign nationals – including Germans, Italians and Russians – were among the tourists. Those evacuated were brought to the archipelago’s main city of Port Blair.

Vardah caused heavy flooding and disrupted power supplies

at several places, local media reported. The latest weather bulletin said the storm had developed into a severe cyclone and was moving toward the Indian mainland.

The archipelago, a popular tourist destination 1200km off the mainland, comprises 500 islands of which just 34 are permanently inhabited.

Prague’s Jewish cemetery to go digital One of Prague’s most emblematic places, the Old Jewish Cemetery made up of 12,000 tombstones all crammed into a tight space behind two synagogues, is being digitised in an effort to list all the people buried there.

More than a century after it stopped being used as a burial ground, the Jewish Museum in Prague, which manages the site, has proposed giving order to the disorder of the graves, which, in some cases, go down four layers into the earth.

According to Daniel Polakovic, a historian of Prague’s Jewish community, at least 30,000 people are buried in the cemetery, which was established in the 15th century and spans only one hectare.

“We are in the middle of a digital geodetic plan. It’s a complete photographic documentation,”

he tells EFE. The tombstones’ transcriptions are being catalogued on a datbase and will be accessible on the internet, Polakovic says.

There is no date for the launch of the database due to the quantity of names and information that needs to be processed.

As well as information about those buried there, the gravestones include information about the parents and families of the deceased, so the database could amount to some 100,000 names, Polakovic says.

As such, the descendents of Prague’s Jewish community and visitors from all over the world will be able to know exactly who is buried in the disordered cemetery – one of the world’s oldest surviving Jewish burial sites.

Train hits workers Six workers are dead in China after being hit by an express cargo train on the railway line connecting Beijing and the southern city of Guangzhou. A local government statement about the accident said authorities are still investigating why the workers were on a live track. State media reported in July that the number of train-related accidents and deaths had declined during the first half of 2016. - AP

Prague’s Old Jewish Cemetery is being digitised in an effort to list all the people buried there.

A runaway tanker carrying volatile gas slammed into other vehicles and burst into flames on a major road in Kenya, killing at least 33 people and injuring 10, officials said yesterday. The tanker lost control while going downhill on the road from the capital, Nairobi, to Naivasha, said Mwachi Pius Masai, the deputy director and communications officer for the National Disaster Management Unit. “This is a serious chemical incident,” Masai said. “Police and other rescuers are still on the scene ... clearing debris.” He said the death toll could rise.

■ Place a rice paper wrapper in a bowl of hot water for about 30 seconds or until it has softened enough to roll. Pat dry and place on a flat surface.

■ Place some of the chicken, cucumber, carrot, lettuce, mint, coriander and spring onion in a line down the centre of the rice paper wrapper, leaving about 3cm at one end.

■ Fold up the wrapper at this end.

Birders, brewers form flock A group of birding enthusiasts watch waterfowl on Sabattus Pond in Sabattus, Maine. The Maine Brew Bus offers tours that combine bird watching and visits to craft beer makers in southern Maine.

n the worlds of birders and craft beer lovers, there’s a new paradigm, and it involves searching for ales along with the eagles, pairing stouts with swans and enjoying some bocks in tandem with buntings.

Tours and events aimed at attracting both beer nerds and bird enthusiasts are popping up all over the country, attracting bearded microbrew lovers, field-guide-wielding bird buffs and folks with a passion for both suds and sparrows.

Bird-and-beer happenings are taking place from Los Angeles to Minneapolis to Hampton, New Hampshire.

Beer and bird hobbyists say they are united by their mutual love of minutiae, rarity and variety, whether searching for an Indian peafowl or a limited release of India pale ale.

Typically, the trips begin with a hike and end at a brewery. One of the more successful tours is

Birds On Tap Roadtrip, located in beer-loving, bird-rich Maine and now in its second year.

“There happen to be a lot of people who like birds who like beer – we’ve analyzed this,” said Derek Lovitch, who leads Birds On Tap Roadtrip tours. “And then, after the third or fourth pint, we really analyze this.”

Birds On Tap Roadtrip is coordinated by Freeport Wild Bird Supply, which is run by bird nut Lovitch and his wife, Jeannette.

They partner with Maine Brew Bus, a lime green bus that shuttles people to the state’s many breweries and serves as a kind of Mystery Machine of Maine beer.

The tours are $65 – libations are included, but binoculars are not.

This year’s slate of tours began in February and will run every several weeks until this month.

Each trip has a theme, including Surf and Suds, which is a winter waterfowl tour, and Grassland and Grains, a late-spring search

for sandpipers and sparrows on the Kennebunk Plains, a nature preserve.

This November’s tour was Fall Ducks and Draughts, a chilly march around Sabattus Pond on the hunt for waterbirds including hooded mergansers, common goldeneyes, buffleheads and green-wing teals. All were located, and the group of about a dozen hearty birders then departed by bus for trips to Baxter Brewing in Lewiston and Maine Beer Co. in Freeport.

The beer end of the trip was as successful as the bird bit. The group located a peregrine falcon resting on a steeple just outside Baxter after imbibing. At Maine Beer Company, the brewery was able to provide fresh glasses of Dinner, its sought-after double IPA. Participants agreed there was no harm in having a lager along with the loons. (Though they actually saw only one loon.)

Brandon Baldwin, 40, of Manchester, Maine, went with his mother, Carole Baldwin, 73, of Skowhegan, and said the trip appealed to both of them.

“She’s an avid birder who likes beer. I’m an avid beerer who likes birds,” he said. “It seemed like a perfect crossover.”

Bird-and-beer events sometimes take different forms. One, held on the rooftop of the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, brought bird experts from the National Park Service to help people observe birds in an urban environment. Libations followed. In Minneapolis, a group called Birds and Beers gathers to brainstorm about secret hotspots and tips on how to take bird pictures using a digital scope.

Some of the trips are organised by private companies and nature societies and others are the product of local meet-up groups that form online. Prices vary from nothing to about the price of a pro football ticket.

Don Littlefield, a partner in the Maine Brew Bus company that hosts the Maine tour, said it has proved to be a way to make beer fans out of bird lovers – and vice versa.

“It allows us to reach another different demographic,” he said.

After dominating in round one of Mid Canterbury Tennis’ senior interclub open grade competition, Allenton have fallen to two losses in as many outings in round two.

Allenton, who were beaten

by Fairton last weekend, went through the opening round unbeaten, but a 4-2 loss to Southern on Saturday has kept them winless in the second round.

Southern took the spoils in both doubles matches as Neil McCann and Eddie Dargue ac-

counted for Tessa McCann and Peter Leonard 7-5, 2-6, (10-6) while Erin Connelly-Whyte and Oliver McKeown saw off Crystal Brosnahan and Aaron Reid 7-6, 7-6.

It was an even affair in the singles as Neil McCann downed daughter Tessa 6-4, 6-2 and Eddie Dargue toppled Peter Leonard 6-4, 6-4 but Nicholas Thomassen and Aaron Reid then levelled proceedings with wins over Erin Connelly-Whyte (6-2, 6-3) and Oliver McKeown (1-6, 7-6, 10-5).

Meanwhile Fairton picked up

their second win of the round with a 6-0 thumping of Tinwald.

The Fairton team of Sam Bubb and Connor Brosnahan proved too good for Jason Feutz and Dennis Taylor 6-3, 6-3, while Tyler Leonard and Phil Crozier took the spoils over Dallas Scott and Mathieu Lucas.

It was also a clean sweep in the singles.

Bubb toppled Feutz 7-5, 6-0, Taylor defaulted to Leonard, Brosnahan downed Scott 7-5, 6-3 and Crozier made light work of Lucas 6-2, 6-0.

What next for Parker?

By Patrick Mckendry New Zealand’s new heavyweight champion of the world Joseph Parker has achieved his first dream, now he plans to fulfill his next one – to unify the division, a lofty goal but one that he is justified in having after his hardfought but deserved victory over Andy Ruiz Jr. But first there is a break to take.

Parker is one of the busiest heavyweights in the top echelon and, this, his 15th fight in three years, will have taken its toll, and particularly in terms of taxing his mental reserves.

He will probably fight again in March or April, and potentially against Hughie Fury, cousin of Tyson who vacated the WBO belt.

Parker, 24, did it the hard way, and Ruiz Jr later claimed the victory for himself.

Down by as many as four rounds at the Vector Arena as he attempted to keep the hardcharging Mexican at bay, Parker showed incredible patience, confidence in his game plan, and ability, to not only nullify Ruiz Jr’s threat, but finish over the top for his majority points decision.

It’s only fair that he is given a chance to take stock and recharge.

Parker’s corner erupted at the 114-114, 115-113 and 115-113 decision by the judges.

Trainer Kevin Barry, in particular, was ecstatic.

He promised his late father, Kevin senior, that he would take a fighter to a heavyweight world championship, and having just failed with David Tua in Las Vegas 16 years ago, he did it with a humble young man from Papatoetoe instead.

“He’ll be happy won’t he?” Barry, an Olympic silver medallist, said of his father.

“He’ll be looking down and I think he’ll be pretty proud. It’s really special. It’s the most special moment of my boxing career.

“Being there in 2000 was good because it was my first time, and I won it with [light heavyweight Beibut] Shumenov, but to be here in New Zealand with Joe, somebody who I have so much respect for, somebody who I love so much, for him to create history in New Zealand and for me to be part of it, it’s very special.”

Parker said: “What a great feeling. I dreamed of doing this one day and now I’ve fulfilled that dream, my goal, and I couldn’t have done it without my team ... what a great feeling it is to win it and win it in New Zealand.”

Asked what he was thinking when referee Tony Weeks started reading out the result, Parker said: “I just listened to my coach and he said ‘I think we did enough to win it at the end’.

“The jab, when we used that

jab and punished him from the outside, we knew we won those rounds. It was a very close fight, he brought his A-game ... he showed speed and power and it was a great fight he put on.

“This is a dream come true, but this is just the start.

“Now that we’ve won this we’re going to dominate the heavyweight division, that’s our goal.

“Our goal is to win and keep winning, dominate and unify those belts.”

Parker’s face was unmarked despite being hit regularly, but Ruiz Jr’s was badly bruised and already starting to swell around the eyes when he spoke to the media afterwards.

His eyes were bloodshot and he had several ugly red marks on his face, neck and chest.

Barry said: “Andy fought a hell of a battle, but look at his face.

Joe bashed him up, he’s really marked him.”

Ruiz Jr, the aggressor throughout, said: “I think I won the fight,

I was always on the pace and controlling the rounds with the jab, pushing him back and putting him under pressure.

“I don’t think he threw a lot of combinations, I think I showed that I was the faster guy out there, but I came to his home town and I think the judges were in his favour.”

He added after his first defeat as a professional: “He didn’t hurt me at all. This cut [over right eye] is from a headbutt that we both crashed in ... he couldn’t really do anything but move back.

“I give him four rounds good that he got me.

“I’ve just got to come back and hopefully we’ll get a re-match some day.”

Barry, who gave up drinking for eight weeks during the training camp but who planned to celebrate in style, said: “I knew the longer the fight went, the better it would be for Joe. “I knew Andy would have some moments in the early parts of the fight and he did, but once Joe started to control the distance from the oustide and work off the double jab, we were just piling the points on and keeping Andy off balance.”

Ruiz Jr said before he arrived that he probably needed to win by more than three rounds as he was fighting in Parker’s home town, and conceded last night: “Maybe I could have done a little bit more to win.”

The Mexican’s legendary trainer Abel Sanchez felt his man won the fight.

Asked whether Parker was at the level of the likes of IBF champion Anthony Joshua or Wladimir Klitschko, he said: “Both guys have a little way to go before getting to [the level of] Joshua but this fight will help both guys become better fighters.”

‘Something stinks about this fight’ “I’m embarrassed being a Kiwi after last night.”

Those were the words of Lance Revill, President of the New Zealand Professional Boxing Association, following Joseph Parker’s historic victory over Andy Ruiz Jr on Saturday night.

“Let’s get one thing straight, I’m a great friend of Joseph Parker, he’s been to my gym a number of times, he’s sparred with my heavyweights when he was an amateur.

“I’ve got a lot of time for him,” Revill said the morning after Parker claimed the WBO world heavyweight title.

“I’m afraid to say that he didn’t win the fight last night.

“Ruiz cleaned him out.”

Revill has no doubt Ruiz Jr won the fight and should be returning home as Mexico’s first heavyweight world champion.

“I scored it 118-111 in favour

of Ruiz,” said Revill in what many will regard as a controversial summary of the fight.

“Parker had no game-plan.

“It was a lopsided fight and I feel sorry for Andy Ruiz.

“Something stinks about this fight, something stinks about the whole set-up.

“There wasn’t a bad word said about Joseph Parker.

“The whole press is on his side, he’s been given a dream ride right through.”

While many experts around the world had Parker winning a close fight, Revill stood by his views and insisted that New Zealanders need to stop kidding themselves.

“I know one thing for sure last night, Parker didn’t win that fight.

“And I want to make it clear with everyone else, cut your bullshit, cut saying he’s an honorable Samoan/New Zealander, it’s bullshit.

Lance Revill “He didn’t win the fight and get real because we haven’t got a New Zealand heavyweight champion. Ruiz got ripped off.”

American boxing commentator James Smith had other ideas, and said Revill’s views were “way over the top” yesterday.

“The fight was ebb and flow, back and forth, nip and tuck.

“I had Ruiz winning by one

point but it could have gone even, it could have gone to Parker.

“This is the subjectivity of boxing,” said Smith.

“When a fight is this close, there’s four criteria to score a fight: Clean punching, effective aggressiveness, ring generalship and defence.

“All of those areas were back and forth and then I go to my fifth criteria which is ‘who was doing more of what they wanted to do’.

“At the end of the day I thought Ruiz was doing a little bit more but no call for anything that this was a ripoff. It was a very close fight, Parker gets the nod, it could have gone either way.”

Smith said that in the end Parker fought well and gave his thoughts on a possible resolution.

Joshua now set to fight Klitschko Britain’s Anthony Joshua set up an April showdown with veteran heavyweight Wladimir Klitschko yesterday after retaining his IBF world title with a clinical thirdround stoppage of outclassed American Eric Molina in Manchester.

After two probing opening rounds, 2012 Olympic superheavyweight champion Joshua sent his opponent crashing to the canvas for his 18th win inside the distance in as many professional fights.

Molina, 34, clambered unsteadily back to his feet as the count reached eight, but the referee stepped in again to stop the fight after two minutes and two seconds of the round with a technical knockout declared.

The Texan had fought for the world title once before, losing to Deontay Wilder for the WBC belt in 2015.

Moments after the fight, promoter Eddie Hearn stepped into the ring to announce an April 29 bout against Ukrainian Klitschko at London’s Wembley Stadium for the “unified heavyweight championship of the world”.

That can be taken as hyperbole, much as Hearn’s assertion that it would be the “biggest fight in British boxing history”, with New Zealander Joseph Parker the newly-crowned WBO champion while American Wilder still holding the WBC belt.

Britain’s Tyson Fury, who beat Klitschko in November 2015, vacated the WBA and WBO belts in October after having his licence suspended pending investigation of anti-doping and medical issues.

He had already been stripped of the IBF belt for not fighting a mandatory challenger.

“We move on to a bigger arena, more people can view it.

“This is the step up people have wanted.

“Klitschko wants his belts back, may the best man win,” said Joshua after his second defence.

Klitschko, who had been watching ringside at the Manchester Arena, stepped through the ropes for some early eyeballing.

“He is the best man in the division and I believe this excitement speaks for itself.

“This is what the fans want and this fight must happen,” said the 40 -year-old.

“He was clear, clean and won by knockout and, as his next opponent, it was good I was here to observe it and make my notes.”

The WBA last month officially sanctioned the match between the two fighters for the vacant title.

Saturday’s big fight offered less excitement, however, than a toeto-toe WBC title eliminator on the under card between Britons Dillian Whyte and Dereck Chisora, won by the former on a split-decision.

Khalid ‘Kal’ Yafai earlier took the WBA super-flyweight world title after outpointing Panama’s Luis Concepcion 120-108 119-108 117-110.

McIlroy strikes gold New Zealand has ended the world bowls championships on a high, with Shannon McIlroy winning the men’s singles gold in Christchurch yesterday afternoon.

The Kiwi beat Canada’s Ryan Bester 21-17 after 22 ends in the men’s singles final.

McIlroy pulled away from Bester midway through the contest, leading 17-9 after 15 ends.

But the Canadian’s drives kept him in the game and he narrowed the gap to 20-17 before McIlroy closed out the match.

He becomes just the second New Zealander to win gold in the event since Peter Bellis in 1984.

McIlroy reflected after the final that “all those days missing school, going down to the bowling club” had paid off.

“I knew I’d have my work cut out [against Bester] and that I’ve to play really well,” said McIlroy.

“Everyone who’s been involved in the preparation for this event

has worked really hard and I’m rapt that it’s all paid off.

This means everything in the world.”

In yesterday morning’s final, Jo Edwards and Angela Boyd had to settle for silver in the women’s pair.

The New Zealand duo were beaten 16-15 by Wales in an absorbing final.

Jess Sims and Laura Daniels led throughout and held off a Blackjacks comeback over the closing ends.

Edwards and Boyd needed to pick up two shots on the 18th to force an extra end but were only able to come up with one.

Russell Crowe and South Sydney are making a play to take troubled Kiwi Kieran Foran away from the Warriors.

The Sydney Morning Herald has revealed Crowe is considering making a play for Foran to join the Rabbitohs in 2018.

The club is banking on Foran being readmitted to the NRL and wanting to return to Sydney where his children live.

The Warriors are currently waiting for Foran, who is training with them, to be cleared to play for the Auckland-based franchise in 2017.

Warriors officials are confident that will happen and ultimately want to secure Foran, who has been plagued by mental health issues and links to match-fixing and Sydney underworld figures, on a long-term contract.

But Crowe has other ideas.

Foran has only committed to the Warriors for one season and has told those close to him he wants to return to Sydney the following year to be closer to his young children.

The Rabbitohs, who made discreet enquiries about Foran before he signed with the Warriors, are likely to be joined by Canterbury, now coached by Des Hasler who oversaw the Kiwi’s rise at Manly.

“He only wanted a one-year deal so he can come back to Sydney to be close to his family and benefit from any rise in the salary cap,” a source close to Foran told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Another Barrett about to make a serious mark

Next year could be all about Jordie Barrett.

The youngest Barrett sibling is one of those athletes professional coaches can’t help but get excited by.

They don’t really know quite where to start because everything they probe and analyse more than holds up to scrutiny.

The All Blacks certainly feel like it won’t be long before they

welcome back Barrett – not as an apprentice, as he was last month – but as a full member of the squad.

When Barrett will graduate to test football depends on how quickly he can find his feet in Super Rugby.

No one wants to put any added pressure on him or burden him with expectation, but the vibe is clear that the All Blacks wouldn’t be surprised if he’s in the squad to play the Lions.

That doesn’t mean the All Blacks are expecting him to be involved – they just feel that they’ve seen

enough to know that Barrett has the all-round gifts that could see him take possession of the Hurricanes No 12 jersey next season and play the sort of football that will make him impossible to leave out of the national squad.

Too much, too soon? Not realistic to expect a 19-year-old to make the All Blacks in his rookie Super Rugby season?

Rieko Ioane managed it and Barrett, by all assessments, is in much the same sort of category.

In no particular order, the qualities that excite coaches about

Barrett are his size and agility. At 1.95m, he’s tall – just about as tall as brother Scott, who plays lock.

At the moment, though, he’s skinny, slender and wiry but that’s more to do with his age and lack of training years than anything else.

Most likely he’ll be used at 12 by the Hurricanes. There’s a view that may be his best position but he has plenty of experience and ability at fullback and there is even some belief he could slot in at No 10 if required.

He’s got an incredible range and the perfect temperament.

And it is his temperament that Hansen was largely taken with during November.

“Jordie is just one of the Barrett boys,” he said.

“Having two of his brothers [on tour] made life easier and so, too, because there were three or four of the Canterbury boys. But he’s a pretty cool customer and he’s not frightened to be vulnerable, which is good, because that is what we want for him at this stage.

“He’s picking up a lot and he is going to be okay.”

Smolda InterDom champ

By Michael Guerin The domination by New Zealand’s greatest ever racing stable is now complete.

Champion harness trainers Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen capped a mind-boggling year when their veteran pacer Smolda outstayed Australia’s best in the A$1.1million Inter Dominion Final at Gloucester Park on Friday night.

The Canterbury-trained gelding was too brave for hot favourite Hectorjayjay after the pair cleared out from their opponents in Australia’s richest harness race.

They sat back off a frenetic early speed before swooping into the race at the 1000m mark and setting up a two-horse war, a war that Hectorjayjay looked to be winning on the home bend.

But Smolda fought back to claim a rare New Zealand victory in a major Perth race, taking his career earnings past $2.1million and becoming the 11th richest pacer in Australasian history.

His track record victory completes a year of domination unmatched in either racing code for Purdon and Rasmussen.

The couple has now trained the winners of the Inter Dominion, New Zealand Cup, Miracle Mile, Auckland Cup, Hunter Cup, Chariots of Fire and New Zea-

The only serious open class pacing race they have been beaten in during that freakish run was this year’s Victoria Cup, in which Smolda finished a head second.

Add to that the stable, appropriately known as the All Stars, have also won the four main Australasian Pacing Derbys and four strongest Australasian Pacing Oaks races and their trophy cabinet in

the the last year defies belief.

While no Australasian stable in either thoroughbred or harness racing can boast that kind of trophy haul, it hard to imagine any stable worldwide has completely and utterly monoplised its sector of the industry in such a way.

Purdon, who drove Smolda, admitted he was stunned when looking back over the year.

“When you think of what we have achieved it is pretty hum-

bling,” said Purdon. “We focus on one race at a time but it has been a pretty special time. Winning like that, with him showing such great heart, is one of the most satisfying victoies of my career.”

Remarkably Smolda is not even the best horse in his stable, with Purdon and Rasmussen training champion four-year-old Lazarus to win the New Zealand Cup last month by 10 lengths, a race Smolda finished fourth in.

While he won his heat of the Inter Dominion last week, Smolda looked tired and below his best, prompting Purdon to make a radical change to his training regime.

“I only fast worked him once this week, the rest of the time I just jogged him and let him recovery from the heats.

“That is not something I would usually do but I knew he was fit enough and his heart did the rest.

“He is a very brave horse.”

Smolda will now be set for a defence of the A$500,000 Hunter Cup he won in Melbourne last season coming up in February.

But even with Smolda and Lazarus not in the Auckland Cup at Alexandra Park on December 31, the All Stars have the two favourites for that race in Dream About Me and Titan Banner, both of who bolted in at Alexandra Park on Friday night.

The domination shows no signs of ending.

Chambord back to winning form at Awapuni Despite knowing the result of Saturday’s open sprint at Awapuni, Matamata trainer Stephen Autridge admitted he still held his breath watching a replay of the race 24 hours later.

The only possible question mark over the three-year-old before Saturday’s feature could have been the trip, but she answered positively with a strong closing 150 metres to stretch her winning sequence to five. “I was a little bit worried half-way up the straight, she looked a bit flat-footed before she really wound up,” trainer Graham Richardson said. “That might be a good sign that she could quite possibly get up to a mile and a half.”

Skyweka too strong A stunning win by progressive mare Skyweka was the highlight of a somewhat topsy-turvy day at the office for Cambridge trainer Tony Pike on Saturday. Pike saddled up six runners at Te Rapa for a win and two minor placings however the unplaced performance of beaten favourite Chenille in the Gr. 3 SKYCITY Hamilton Waikato Cup left him feeling a little perplexed.

“I’m not quite sure what to make of Chenille’s run,” he admitted.

“She got a decent buffering in the straight the first time around and lost a plate but she never really fired which was disappointing as I was confident of a big run. Vardy triple shocks City Former England striker Gary Lineker, Leicester City’s most famous and perhaps favourite son, wondered aloud last week whether last season’s Premier League triumph had all been a crazy dream, so dismal had their 2015 defence of the title been.

The collective will seemed to have long evaporated, along with Jamie Vardy’s goals and Riyad Mahrez’s magic.

Yet yesterday, on a rainy December night, the King Power Stadium was transported back to those balmy, wonderful May days.

Mahrez looked like the player of the year again with his exquisite assists, Vardy scored his first-ever hat-trick for the Foxes and Claudio Ranieri’s men seemed to be infused with their old spirit as they beat Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 4-2.

When Vardy returned to the dressing room afterwards, Ranieri smiled that he had told his key striker who had not scored for the club in 16 matches: “Oh, welcome back!”

He could have been speaking to the entire team whose performance, so redolent of the steel and style that had earned them the title, made a mockery of their unwanted possession of the worst record of any defending English league winners since Ipswich Town in 1962-63.

“It was the true Leicester today,” Ranieri said proudly.

On Wednesday, albeit with a second-string squad, Leicester had been appalling in their record 5-0 thrashing by Porto in the Champions League and Ranieri admitted he and the players had thrashed out the problems for an hour after the game.

So it was that a new-look Leicester should emerge, looking very much like the old Leicester: not worrying about lack of possession but striking quickly and inventively on the counter and defending resolutely.

“The big champions react at the right moment,” Ranieri enthused.

“We know when we play well we can win. Today they made an effort for the team. That is what I love.”

The victory offered the tantalising prospect that Leicester could now go on and produce the sort of performances they had hitherto saved largely for Champions League nights.

“The next matches are very important until Christmas because we are in a battle for relegation,” Ranieri added, with his side still only four points above the drop zone.

His old smile was back, though. “I said I need warriors and they showed me what I wanted to see,” he beamed.

Sport ‘We can beat Pacquiao’ Jeff Horn’s trainer says he already has the blueprint to beat Manny Pacquiao should a blockbuster fight with the Filipino legend eventuate next year.

Rising Australian welterweight Horn scored the biggest win of his burgeoning career on Saturday night, stopping South African veteran Ali Funeka by technical knockout in the sixth round of their clash at Auckland’s Vector Arena. With Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum watching from ringside and millions around the world watching on TV, it was a victory that will open lucrative doors for Horn.

Evans dominates on track Reigning series champion Simon Evans has extended his lead of the 2016-’17 BNT NZ Touring Car Championship after dominating the opening day of the ITM Motorsport Championship race event at Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park. Evans topped qualifying and then dominated the race in tricky wet conditions, leading every lap to win by almost two seconds.

Hot start to summer Braden Currie has kick-started his summer of racing with a tenacious success – defending his Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman 70.3 Taupo title on Saturday.

Methven’s Currie sprinted through the finish flags in 3:52:44 – some 33 seconds clear of runner-up and fellow Kiwi Mike Phillips.

A trademark run enabled Currie, who sat fifth at the end of the bike leg, to clinch the eye-catching victory.

It was a particularly satisfy-

ing win for Currie as he prepares for a packed summer of racing and he has plenty of positives – including fastest swim, fourth fastest bike split and fastest run time – to take forward.

Currie’s race started well in Lake Taupo with the 1.9km swim and he found himself leading the pro field.

“I managed to swim side by side with another athlete and we kept ourselves in front and then I put in a burst to be first out of the water,” said Currie.

Currie said he was pleasantly surprised by the swim result.

The 30-year-old hasn’t been in the pool for nearly two weeks due to the risk of infection to the deep wound on his left hip, incurred when he hit the tarmac at about 50kmh, after his time trial bike slipped out on wet paint.

Fellow Kiwi Mark Bowstead assumed the advantage on the bike, however, Currie, a threetime winner of the Coast to Coast, refused to panic.

run he had hauled himself up to third and after hitting the front just before halfway he strode out to victory.

Currie’s win caps off what has been a successful year. He is the current national Olympic distance triathlon champion; long distance triathlon champion and 2016 Asia Pacific XTERRA champion. Currie was second in the XTERRA Pan-Americas; third in the ITU Off-road triathlon championships and fourth in the Asia Pacific 70.3 Championships.
