New motel complex on horizon

Two heritage trees and neighbours’ consent stand between an inner-town motel complex being built in Ashburton and the plans remaining unrealised.

A resource consent application has been lodged with the Ashburton District Council for a two-storey accommodation building to be constructed on Burnett Street west on a vacant lot adjoining St Stephen’s Church.

The site was originally home to the Anglican vicarage, but this building was demolished after the 2011 earthquake.

Planning consultant David Harford said the development also had to clear a zoning hurdle. In spite of the land being in the commercial section of Ashburton, it holds a residential zoning and this is currently being worked through with the council and its neighbours.

Discussions were ongoing with the Anglican Church property trust, he said.

Harford was confident the tree issue could be resolved, with one of the specimens likely to be relocated on the site.

“We believe the issues are solvable, it’s just a matter of working through the process,” he said.

If the motels clear the consultation hurdle they will provide a valuable inner town accommodation

option that will ease commercial bed pressure when the EA Networks Centre is being used for major sports events, Harford said.

“It’s a good development and it’s just a short walk away. The town needs this, it’s just trying to satisfy all factions.”

Harford is confident the motel project will go ahead, but said if there were ongoing delays, the developer could use the residential zoning to advantage and the site could be put to another use.

This could see another development, such as several two-storey dwellings built, but without the same need for consultation with neighbours.

Safer Ashburton gets an A on report

The community safety organisation Safer Ashburton has been given a vote of confidence in an Ashburton District Council-commissioned review.

The council decided to employ a consultant to take a long, hard look at the organisation to determine whether it was getting value from its $172,000 annual grant that is part of its overall community safety package.

Over a year the council spends almost $1 million on community

safety, with almost half of that on street lighting.

Safer Ashburton makes up just 17 per cent of the total amount spent on community safety. The council grant is only 22 per cent of Safer Ashburton’s total income but is critical in helping it win government-funded contracts.

In his report consultant Peter Winder said that Ashburton had one of the most robust and varied programmes of the Safer Community Trusts around New Zealand.

“They’re far less reliant on

council funding because they have lots of government contracts, Safer Ashburton is able to lever your funding to deliver other safety programmes, at a rate of $4 for every $1 you give. Your support allows them to better deal with the shifting vagaries of government funding.”

He said that Safer Ashburton “seemed to be doing a good job”.

Winder suggested the council needed to have clearer objectives around the functions of Safer Ashburton and said the organisation was the ideal lead agency to

deliver the new accredited Safer Communities model.

In the past the council has appointed one district councillor to Safer Ashburton. This is no longer the practice, but Winder recommended they should nominate a councillor or senior manager to the organisation to become a community safety champion.

For Safer Ashburton, manager Kevin Clifford said the Winder report was a vote of confidence for his organisation.

“I’d say it was pretty outstandingly positive and it indicates

council is getting value for money, we’re a good investment,” he said.

The suggestion that the district could move to become an accredited Safe Community with Safer Ashburton as the lead agent was good news, Clifford said.

“This report says we’re good value for money and that we’re the best placed organisation to lead an accredited safer community. We’re excited about the prospect of moving into a closer working relationship with the council.”

Canteen benefits from head shaves and debate Shaving heads and talking up a storm earned more than $4000 for Canteen and that money has now found its way from Ashburton’s Youth Council’s bank account into the funding pool of the cancer support organisation.

The youth council recently staged a debate between three of their members and three Ashburton District Councillors as a Canteen fundraiser. Two councillors and one council staff member were sponsored to shave their heads to add money to the cause.

When Canteen regional manager Michelle Matheson received the money from youth council chair Alyce Lysaght she said that small communities were some of the country’s stars in their support for the organisation.

“The money you’ve raised will be put to really good use supporting young people around Canterbury,” she said.

Climate change splits ranks

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel might have been keen to put her name to a local government declaration on climate change, but her councillors weren’t so enthusiastic.

At Thursday’s Ashburton District Council meeting in her mayor’s report, Favel included a recommendation that she should be authorised to sign the climate change declaration. She included a web link so councillors could read the document.

Thirty-nine mayors had put their name to the declaration and Favel said she wanted to add hers.

“My understanding is I could sign this on my own but my role is to represent the people of the district so I’m talking to you, saying I’m considering signing,” she told her councillors.

Deputy mayor Neil Brown wasn’t happy.

“We need to read this in more depth. We need to know what we’re signing ourselves up for and I’d like to see a staff report on this,” he said.

Peter Reveley asked Favel whether she had looked at the financial implications that came with signing the document.

“If we agreed to this we could

end up handing over millions of dollars,” he said.

In his objection Stuart Wilson delivered his fellow councillors a weather history lesson.

“Talk to rural people and they’ll say climate change is nothing but a myth. Nothing is changing. We used to get heavy rain and we still get heavy rain.

“The last real flood was in 1945, we’ve had very high temperatures in the past and the big wind happened in 1975. People forget what happened in the past,” he said.

Now, when anything weather related was out of the ordinary every one said it was climate change,

Wilson said. “I’ve got no appetite to sign this climate change document.”

Caution until the council knew what it was signing on for was the way to go, Diane Rawlinson said.

Favel found an ally in Selwyn Price who said science should be swaying the day, not emotion.

“The reality is 97 per cent of scientists for the last 20 years say climate change is real, it’s not a hoax.

It’s happening now and it’s real.”

The Ashburton District could not afford to ignore the facts, he said. “The people in this district who will suffer the cost will be the farmers.”

“The point is, it’s here. Niwa has confirmed it’s here. Rural people have a view they’re not in support of climate change discussions.

Green light for Methven skatepark

In exchange for spending a dollar a year the Methven community has been given a slice of Ashburton District Council land where it can build a skate park.

Kidz Methven asked the council for a skate park site and tagged a section on the corner of McMillan and Bank Streets as its number one choice.

And this week district councillors signed off an agreement that hands the 2024 square metre site over to the community group in exchange for an annual fee of $1 – if demanded.

A lease will be signed for a three-year period with a right of renewal for another 10 years.

“That term was set because we needed a finite period; it gives the council an opportunity to relook at it in the future,” said council commercial manager Colin Windleborn.

The outcome is a good one for Kidz Methven as the group had been looking for a skate park site since a privately-owned one was damaged in the 2011 earth-

quakes, he said.

It was also a good deal for the council as, while it might not generate any income, it did mean the council would no longer incur bills for mowing and tree trimming that came to around $1700 a year.

The council was currently developing a policy around commercial leases but charging regimes were based on how much capital expenditure the lease would invest in the site, Windleborn said.

“Some are not spending much but others, like Kidz Methven will be spending a lot.”

The skate park is estimated to cost $150,000 to establish and with a site lease secured, fundraising will now start.

Some of the green space on the section will be retained, as council has restricted the area of development for the skate park to be no more than 1200 square metres.

The skate park will also be designed in line with the National Guidelines for Crime Prevention.

Turbo Touch time at Wakanui

It’s Turbo Touch time at Wakanui School and students have been refining their throws, catches, dodges and defence.

Each year in winter, a number of schools across the district take part in the Turbo Touch development programme offered

by Touch Canterbury, where they upskill on the unique game

and are sorted into teams.

For Wakanui School, Fridays are practice days.

At the end of each season, participating schools come together for a Mid Canterbury Turbo Touch competition.

The sport is a fast, five-a-side game that draws together aspects of netball and touch rugby and can be played on either a court or field.

In brief Restrictions lifted The level five water conservation notice placed on the Rakaia water scheme after submersible pump failed has now been lifted. The pump broke on Wednesday and Rakaia residents were limited to only essential water use because water could no longer be pumped into the town system. The Rakaia community had been very cooperative during the conservation notice, council assets manager Andrew Guthrie said.

The opportunity is now up for grabs to work for a week or more at Pinnacles Hut or Woolshed Creek over summer.

DOC makes call for hut warden volunteers

DOC have put out the annual call for eager alpinists to patrol the scenic huts of Mount Somers – but this summer double the volunteers are needed.

To tackle mounting visitor numbers DOC will now be stationing one warden at the Pinnacles Hut at all times, along with one at Woolshed Creek.

Each warden will spend a minimum of one week at either hut, or a combination of both.

The huts are situated 6km apart along the Mount Somers track, and also provide access to other walks including the Mount Somers summit.

Geraldine Raukapuka Office Ranger Supervisor Chris Dyson said they are looking for anyone over the age of 18 who has the necessary equipment, feels “confident out on the mountains” and is able to drive themselves to the start of the track.

He said wardens will have private staff quarters to stay at the

Wardens are in charge of collecting payment, cleaning and maintaining the huts, providing information to visitors and communicating with DOC staff at the Geraldine/Raukapuka Office.

DOC’s decision to station a new warden at the Pinnacles Hut also results from their new National Compliance Strategy.

Under the new strategy, DOC are working to enforce laws designed to protect public conservation land and New Zealand’s valuable wildlife – including cracking down on hut and track vandalism.

The wardening period is from the start of October through to the end of April, but opportunities are also available throughout the year.

Fire destroys sleepout A derelict sleepout in the Surrey Hills was razed to the ground in the early hours of Friday morning.

The building, near Anama, caught alight just before 1am. Two trucks from the Mayfield volunteer fire brigade attended, along with a team from Ashburton. Mayfield Rural Fire Force volunteer Alex Quigley said no people were inside the building at the time it caught ablaze. “It was an old sleepout that some kids used to use,” he said, adding that it was too early to know what caused the fire.

Rapping robot winner It started as a “stupid idea” between a father and son, but a tweet-rapping robot has seen an intermediate school student in Dunedin claim a number of awards.

RapBot was one of more than 100 entries to the Otago Science and Technology Fair. The quirkylooking robot has two settings.

The first allows the robot to “rap” direct messages it receives, and the second raps new tweets on a user’s timeline.

Plugging the ambulance funding gap

It might have been trading for seven weeks, but Ashburton’s St John Op Shop is now officially in business.

The shop joins a network of 40 St John businesses around New Zealand, established to provide the income stream needed to bridge the gap been Ministry of Health funding and the cost of running its services.

Area executive officer Elaine Vallender said that in Ashburton the service was looking at a funding gap of $150,000 each year just to run the ambulance service.

“We only receive 75 per cent of what it costs to run our ambulance service from the Ministry of Health and ACC and while we do recover a part charge from patients, not everyone pays.”

The demand on St John services was growing steadily and that meant the need for fundraising was constant, Vallender said.

“The people of Ashburton do support us incredibly well but you always feel like you’re asking for money.

“The op shop will give us a constant revenue stream and it

will also meet a need in the community.”

The St John health shuttle was run on a donation basis but

made a loss each year of around $15,000 but it was a service St John believed was important for the district, Vallender said.

The St John youth programme is funded regionally, but is propped up locally and funds also needed to be raised for com-

munity first aid education.

The St John Op Shop was a year in the making, but when she looked at the well-stocked shop, Vallender said it had been worth the wait for the right building.

It joins several other op shops in central Ashburton but research showed the district’s population could support that number, she said.

“We did a huge business plan and compared ourselves to other towns our size. In Levin for example, they have 11 op shops.

We think we fit into a nice niche market.”

The store is managed by Deborah Lysaght and a large team of volunteers.

What the polls are telling us Amid Jacindamania and Labour’s stunning 33 per cent poll result, it’s worth remembering that when David Shearer was dumped in 2013 the party’s rating was around 34 per cent.

Its MPs wanted the party back in the 40plus range where it could put up a credible challenge to National.

So while Jacinda Ardern has achieved a remarkable success by lifting her party nine points in two weeks, she still has some way to go before Labour becomes a real threat in its own right.

What the Newshub poll showed was that Labour supporters who deserted the party during Andrew Little’s reign are coming home.

They had gone to the Greens and NZ First, which both suffered serious losses in the poll.

The Greens dropped 4.7 points to 8.3 per cent and NZ First dropped 3.8 points to 9.2 per cent.

There was no reason, other than Ardern, for NZ First to lose ground.

Leader Winston Peters has been working furiously hard to win votes, he’s already held more than 50 public meetings around the country and the party has been free from scandals or any other negative publicity.

That indicates the fall in support for the

Greens probably has more to do with Labour’s resurgence under Ardern than Metiria Turei’s spectacular benefit fraud admission and the subsequent furore it generated.

The opposition parties are now roughly back where they were before Labour started its slide into the red zone.

The Greens are down a bit, NZ First is up a bit, and Labour has recovered to around the mid-30s.

The big picture hasn’t changed.

The opposition parties are swapping supporters but Labour and the Greens are still well short of a majority in parliament.

NZ First still holds the balance of power.

Through all this, National has been relatively steady, with ratings ranging from the mid-40s to the 47 per cent it won in the last election.

National has work to do, and so does Labour.

Ardern is well placed to begin the next phase of her mission.

Even more surprising than Labour’s nine point surge was her rating as preferred prime minister – 26.3 per cent compared with English’s 27.7 per cent.

The polls in the next two weeks will tell the tale. If Ardern can pass English, Labour will gain huge momentum going into the campaign.

Weetbix battle goes to court Sanitarium’s battle to stop a small retailer importing a breakfast cereal similar in name to Weet-Bix has been defended by the NZ Food and Grocery Council.

The Kiwi and Aussie health food company is preparing to take small business A Little Bit of Britain to the High Court to stop it importing British-made breakfast cereal Weetabix.

It comes after A Little Bit of Britain, which sells British groceries online and from two South Island outlets, had a shipment of Weetabix stopped at the border.

Sanitarium has said it has a border notice in place that alerts it to breaches of its trademark.

NZ Food and Grocery Council chief executive Katherine Rich says it’s a shame Sanitarium has had to go to court, but “it was left with no option”.

She said the one letter difference be-

tween Weet-Bix and Weetabix was too similar and after building their brand up over 90 years, Sanitarium had to protect it or risk losing its integrity.

“A public scrap sure creates a lot of free publicity for A Little Bit of Britain, and on the surface looks like a David vs Goliath battle,” Ms Rich said.

“But there’s more to it than that. According to reports, fair and reasonable options have already been presented.”

This included Sanitarium paying to place stickers over the Weetabix boxes so that while their names would be covered, they would still be available for A Little Bit of Britain customers to sell, she said.

A Little Bit of Britain’s Lisa Wilson told Fairfax she was confident she was not infringing on the Weet-Bix trademark and was only trying to service her customers.

Spider renamed in honour of professor Spider biologist Professor Simon Pollard was so chuffed to have a native species named after him, he went out to pass on the news to one of them.

“When I found out, I wanted to find one in my garden at home and tell him or her that they were named after me,” the Canterbury University adjunct professor of science communication said.

While the spider – a Trite pollardi – looked at him, Prof Pollard admitted it was unlikely to have appreciated the significance of the meeting.

Trite pollardi is a small, flat jumping spider about 5mm long and commonly found

on buildings and in gardens in both the North and the South Island.

The spider was previously called Holoplatys sp. as it didn’t have a species name.

However, Polish taxonomist Marek Zabka, who spent three months in New Zealand studying native jumping spiders, revised its status.

It was placed in the genus Trite and renamed in honour of Prof Pollard.

An award-winning author, Prof Pollard spent much of 2016 advising Te Papa and Weta Workshop on the $5 million Bug Lab science exhibition, which is touring internationally.

Support based ‘on its merits’ New Zealand can’t commit to an aggressive response against North Korea while encouraging other parties to avoid escalating the situation, Foreign Minister Gerry Brownlee says.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull yesterday committed to supporting the US in the event of an attack by North Korea, but New Zealand won’t make the same promises.

Brownlee said instead that now is a time for caution.

“Committing to an aggressive response now – while encouraging all involved to avoid escalation – is not a position we want to take,” he said from Fiji where he is meeting his Pacific region counterparts.

Brownlee said Australia was New Zealand’s only formal ally and if an armed conflict did develop options would be assessed at the time.

Earlier Prime Minister Bill English said any military support for the US would be considered “on its merits”.

He said any military support at this stage is hypothetical and he’s still focused on a “peaceful resolution” of nuclear threats between the two nations.

“While there’s been an escalation of rhetoric there isn’t any indication that military action’s going to occur,” he said.

“We’re in close contact with the US and Australia but any decision New Zealand makes about North Korea we make according to our own interests.”

Under the ANZUS Treaty, in effect since 1952, Australia is obliged to back the US in the event of an attack like that threatened

by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Guam, through the ANZUS treaty.

US-New Zealand obligations under the treaty have been suspended since 1984.

Turnbull said Australia would invoke the treaty.

US President Donald Trump this week threatened North Korea with “fire and fury”, which was derided as a “load of nonsense” by North Korea’s military.

He upped the ante later in the week, telling reporters the fire and fury comment maybe “wasn’t tough enough”.

English said he didn’t want to see comments that escalate the tension, again describing Trump’s latest remarks as “not helpful”.

MPI’s Animal Health Laboratory at Wallaceville in Upper Hutt is currently in the process of testing more than 4600 samples of milk, blood and swabs from the 16 VLDG farms, neighbouring properties and other farms that have received animals from VLDG farms.

Tests need to be taken three or more times over three to four months before there is a definite result for each farm.

It is estimated that, based on current knowledge, testing will take 12-13 weeks to complete.

The number of farms with cattle disease Mycoplasma bovis remains at two, a public meeting in Waimate has been told.

Tests for Mycoplasma bovis on farms bordering the Van Leeuwen Dairy Group (VLDG) farms have so far been negative.

Around 100 people turned out on Thursday night to hear Ministry for Primary Industries officials and a number of industry body partners outline the current surveillance and testing regime and timelines, the robustness of disease containment measures and the actions farmers can take to protect their farms.

n May next year Ashburton’s premier performing arts and conference facility will celebrate its success with a 10th birthday party.

“I can’t believe how quickly the time has gone,” says Roger Farr, who has been the Ashburton Trust Event Centre’s manager since it opened.

Discussions are under way with community groups for entertainment throughout the year, and kicking off celebrations in May will be the staging of hit musical Mamma Mia. Variety Theatre Ashburton stages a major show at the event centre each year, but this time around will join with management to produce the show and Farr will be the director.

He will be accompanied by wellknown Christchurch-based music director Richard Marrett and Australian-based choreographer Maddison Thew-Keyworth.

“This has been a box office success all over the world and I’m pretty sure it will be here as well,” Farr said.

The show would be expensive, possibly twice the cost of previous Variety Shows which are generally over $100,000, as the set, costumes and props are from a national consortium which has toured the set throughout New Zealand.

Auditions are planned for November 4 and 5, and information about these is to begin coming out in the next fortnight.

Farr said the event centre had gone from strength to strength since it opened on May 8, 2008.

“It has been an exhilarating ride to be on. The community’s support, the people you meet and the talent you get to see is incredible,” he said.

The event centre had an important role to play in developing young talent, similar to the way a sports field was needed for young athletes.

“Whether it be singing, dance, drama, playing in a band, technical staging or lighting, we have the facilities and support to help them achieve their goals,” he said.

There had been 128,000 tickets sold to 1044 events, totalling $4.5 million.

An estimated 20 per cent of the audience came from outside the district, attracting funds which would otherwise not be spent here.

The event centre is owned and operated by the Ashburton Performing Arts Theatre Trust.

Chairman George Brown acknowledged and thanked the

Ashburton District Council for its continued support. The council had recognised the need for such a venue and it facilitated a council goal of enabling residents and visitors to enjoy social, cultural and heritage experiences that enrich community character and vibrancy, and attract new residents to the town.

The continuing financial support received from the Lions Foundation, Mid-South Canterbury Trust, Creative Communities and business partners EA Networks, Heartland Bank, and Gary McCormick Transport Limited, had enabled the event centre to deliver an incredibly varied programme of performances and to attract nu-

merous conference and meeting delegates to the town.

Farr also congratulated and thanked the Ashburton Trust for its decision to renew the naming rights contract for another 10 years.

relationship with us. This has been built on the back of both organisations having similar goals and aspirations to support and serve the community,” Farr said.

Its commitment to the event centre had allowed it to offer a more affordable community rate to local not-for-profit organisations.

“These organisations are the seed bed for nurturing and developing a child’s interest in the performing arts and building their confidence to perform.”

A huge number of local organisations had taken up the opportunity to hire at the community rate with 59 per cent of bookings coming from this sector, Farr said.

One of the event centre goals had been to attract national touring promoters.

“This task was made slightly easier following the Christchurch earthquakes when a number of promoters suddenly found themselves struggling to find a suitable space to perform,” Farr said.

“While nobody likes to succeed

on someone else’s misfortune, the timing of our build and the services we could provide, could not have worked out better.”

And many of those promoters had kept coming back ever since, bringing top quality entertainment to Ashburton and saving locals a trip to Christchurch or Timaru.

“We still regularly receive com-

ments from both performers and promoters about how lucky Ashburton is to have such a quality facility in a town of this size, which as a manager is a real buzz.”

Farr believed a lot of the success came down to having staff and volunteers who took pride in providing an outstanding service to clients.

Serves 4

■ Preheat oven to 190˚C. ■ To prepare the chicken filling, heat the oil in a frying pan. Add the Tegel Fresh Chicken Mince and garlic and cook for 4-5 minutes over medium-high heat, breaking up the mince with a fork as it cooks. Add the basil and tomatoes. Simmer for 5 minutes until the sauce is slightly thickened. Season to taste.

■ To make the white sauce, melt the butter in a small saucepan.

Stir in the flour and cook over medium heat, stirring, until blended. Add the bay leaf and wine and simmer for 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Gradually add the milk, stirring constantly.

Continue stirring over medium heat until the sauce boils and thickens.

■ To assemble the lasagne, lightly grease a 20 x 15cm (or thereabouts) rectangular ovenproof dish. Add a spoonful of the chicken mince sauce and spread

in a thin layer to just cover the bottom of the dish. Add a sheet of lasagne and top this with one-third of the mince followed by one-third of the white sauce.

Repeat twice, ending with a layer of white sauce. Top with parmesan.

■ Bake for 35–40 minutes until the lasagne is golden brown and bubbling.

■ Allow to rest for 5 minutes before serving.

NZ food prices flat in July

pany director Joan Withers told the Business Herald that the lack of female leadership within the NZX50 was “disappointing”.

Historically there’s only ever been four women leading NZX50 companies at any given time.

“The business case for diversity is irrefutable so we’ve got to do better.

“We’ve got to start seeing the numbers change or we risk a future government coming in and saying, ‘We’re going to impose quotas’, which I think would be a negative step,” Withers said.

Gattung doesn’t believe New Zealand’s leadership offering has retreated, but says progress has stalled.

“I don’t think we’ve gone backwards, I just think we haven’t gone forwards, progress has stalled and the rate of change is glacial. “[The lack of female CEOs] will improve only if we as a country care about this enough and if men want their daughters to have the opportunity to run a company then the companies they’re involved in at whatever level, but particularly if they’re in senior roles, need to make sure they have policies and programmes in place to make that a possibility.”

There’s an uneven effort in the private sector to cultivate change, Gattung said.

“If you look across all of New Zealand, at the public sector as well as the private sector, then I think the picture is not so bleak.

But if you look at just the private sector, we’re not going anywhere in a hell of a hurry.”

Kate McKenzie, the new chief executive of telecommunications provider Chorus, is the only female running a listed company in New Zealand.

And there were no women included in the Herald’s annual CEO pay survey released today as McKenzie only took up the role in February this year.

My Food Bag founder and former Telecom chief executive Theresa Gattung, the first woman to run a large public company in 1999, is gobsmacked at the lack of women leading NZX50 companies.

“About 6 per cent of the biggest US companies have women CEOs, and in New Zealand it’s probably even worse than that,” Gattung said.

There are a total of 31 companies run by women in the US Fortune500 – 6 per cent, and just 2 per cent in New Zealand.

The focus on getting women into senior roles was moving at a glacial pace, Gattung said.

“The picture of a CEO that we carry around in our heads still looks like a tall, white man.”

This is unconscious bias – one of the same problems that leads to pay inequity, Gattung said.

“Women still seem to lack the critical support from hierarchy sponsors ... who can help them ascend the corporate ladder.

“Companies really need to have programmes to nurture a strong pipeline of female talent behind whoever the current CEO is, whether they are a man or women.”

The food price index was flat on a seasonally adjusted basis in July, holding the annual increase at 3 per cent, Statistics New Zealand said.

That was due to a 2.4 per cent monthly decline in fruit prices, led by hefty drops in the price of avocados and strawberries, balancing out a 0.7 per cent increase in restaurant meals and a 4.6 per cent jump in the price of hot drinks such as coffee and tea.

“Strawberries are unseasonably cheap for this time of year,” consumer prices manager Matthew Haigh said. “They typically reach their lowest price in December, but are currently dropping in price due to more imports from Australia.”

Food prices account for about 19 per cent of the consumers price index, which is the Reserve Bank’s mandated inflation target when setting interest rates.

Grocery food prices were flat in the month of July on a seasonally adjusted basis, while meat, poultry and fish prices fell 0.8 per cent, non-alcoholic beverage prices increased 0.3 per cent and restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food increased 0.2 per cent.

Euthanasia debate will be heated Colin Williscroft SENIOR REPORTER

A

bill that would legalise euthanasia cleared an important hurdle in recent

days.

The End of Life Choice Bill, proposed by Act leader David Seymour, was given the legal tick of approval by Attorney-General Chris Finlayson, who effectively said if it was enacted, no basic human rights would be infringed.

It should be noted, however, that Finlayson’s report only considered legal questions, not any moral or philosophical ones.

In short, Seymour’s bill will allow people who meet certain eligibility criteria to choose to end their lives.

Those criteria include suffering from a terminal illness; experiencing unbearable suffering that cannot be relieved; or is in an advanced state of irreversible decline. They also need to be over the age of 18 and understand the nature of assisted dying and the consequences of it.

Seymour has hailed the approval as a victory over MPs who did not have the backbone to make some tough decisions, singling out those who in the past described the bill as “poorly drafted”.

He said those who oppose the bill need to be able to explain to those who are dying and living with extreme pain that they should not have a choice about how and when they die.

On the surface, unless you have moral or religious objections, that seems hard to argue with.

However, there are still some people who see problems with the bill and their views deserve to be considered carefully.

On its website, EuthanasiaFree NZ points out that there is no clear definition of terminal illness (it can be interpreted to include any condition that is lifeshortening or life-threatening); depression could be regarded as a terminal condition, because it could lead to death (suicide), or losing the will to live and fight a disease. It’s impossible for doctors to accurately predict how long a person is expected to live, especially as long as six months out, and the phrase “irremediable medical condition” is vague enough to include any condition that is not cured within an expected timeframe.

Seymour’s bill was drawn from the members’ bills ballot in June and it’s not expected to have its first reading until after the general election on September 23.

It’s safe to say it will be the topic of some pretty vigorous debate, both inside and outside the house, after that.

These figures have no more relevance at the present time than the National Government saying that they were going to bridge the wage gap with Australia back in 2008, or that wadeable rivers are okay!

Groups like Federated Farmers need to check their facts before the Guardian does their scaremongering stories which too many “true blue” Mid Canterbury voters are happy to swallow up!

What do we do when Papergate happens? Do we follow the leader? Intimidate fellow workers into confession? Or could we just get over ourselves, be a good leader and get on with the job?

It’s a tough life, being a desk jockey I

believe desk jockeys should be unionised.

Then we could have a national collective agreement and a national body that airs our grievances with the government!

What grievances I hear you ask?

Well butter your crumpet and add another sugar to your tea, because you are going to need it.

By and large the daily demands of a desk jockey are manageable as long as we have access to airconditioning, unlimited coffee and non-basic variety Tim Tams.

However, there comes a point in a paper-pusher’s career when a line has been crossed. This happened to me and it is outrageous!

Someone took the printing I had just completed and removed it from the photocopier and put it somewhere else! I know, how could anyone be so cruel?

I never got to cradle the stillwarm 80gsm A4 with its ‘odour de toner’.

I will not stand for such devious, back-stabbing, and undermining behaviour! When I find out who has done it I will plot a way to set up a public downfall.

Before that I will spread rumours that we have a paper larcenist.

Now back to the most enthralling moment of my day. I found said vital documents on the desk of the school secretary and in my most imposing King of the Iron Filing Cabinet Throne voice inquired, “did you touch this?”

“Ah no, I was still in the staffroom cleaning up after someone, who has no basic house manners, left their dirty dishes in the sink instead of the dishwasher.”

“Righto,” I replied and ducked into my office. After pondering how to respond to this breach of printing etiquette, I came up with a focus for my next steps.

I asked myself – WWBD – What Would Bill Do? Yip, our leader at the top must have had his printing moved at some point and so I asked myself, what would Bill do?

Should I begin texting the sec-

retary about Papergate, as I have now called it in my memoirs.

Could I pull off over 400 texts in one year about it and then say I was just a bystander in the whole saga.

Would I be awake enough to text her at after 1am in the morning because that is apparently the only time you can contact someone. Should I locate another male and check if they have made secret recordings about who could have moved the printing?

Then I thought, maybe Bill has not had long enough in the job to have his printing moved, so I thought WWJD – What Would John Do? Yip, former leader for the past three elections, I am positive he has had someone move his printing.

So could I just go and pull her ponytail for six months and then pass it off as blokey bloke, bloke fun?

Could I put on a Rugby World Cup volunteer’s uniform and mince around the office asking who took the paperwork? Or could I get my secretary, teacher aides and librarian together and all shake hands at the same time until one of us confesses?

Or how about David? Maybe an opposition leader has a clearer view of how to handle the situation because they do not have so many reporters baying at their door.

Should I lean on the lectern in assembly and apologise for being a man? Was it my maleness that led to the paper being moved?

What would John or Bill or David do? These are the only male role-models I have and surely their actions must be beyond question as they have been and are leaders.

Then I finally heard what to do.

From the words of Prophet Jacinda came this mantra ‘Let’s Do This’ Ahh … inner peace has been restored.

Of course! I could get over myself and get on with the job.

So maybe I don’t need a union, maybe a change to an inspiring leader is what is needed to get things done.

‘Blow US from this planet’ North Korea has doubled down on its threat to annihilate the US, pledging to use its young people to “blow the US from this planet”.

The country’s official Korean Central News Agency released a chilling new piece of propaganda, reporting on a mass rally held in Pyongyang’s Kim Il-sung Square.

Pyongyang City Youth League Committee first secretary Mun Chol vowed during the rally that “the young people in the country would become five million human bullets and bombs and nuclear warheads to blow the US from this planet”.

Participants at the rally held signs bearing slogans such as: “Strike the United States with nuclear thunderbolt” and “Let’s become bullets and bombs devotedly defending respected Supreme Leader Comrade Kim Jong-un!”

Kim said the US had falsely styled itself as the “only superpower in the world” and suggested that efforts to pressure it not to develop weapons would only encourage it further.

“Any sanctions and pressure will not browbeat the DPRK but harden its independent faith

Tensions between North Korea and the US have reached new heights after the Trump administration sought to punish the rogue nation for its ICBM test launches via UN sanctions.

After the rogue nation reacted with renewed vitriol towards the US, President Donald Trump said any threats would be “met with fire and fury like the world has never seen”.

Former Home and Away star and X Factor singer Johnny Ruffo is recovering in hospital after undergoing emergency surgery to remove a brain tumour. The 29-year-old, who first found fame on the 2011 season of X Factor, took to Instagram to share the news. Ruffo said that he first admitted himself into hospital with a migraine and was quickly rushed into surgery. “On Sunday i went into hospital with a migraine. I had to have emergency surgery to have a brain tumour removed. I am on the mend and feeling positive. Keep me in your thoughts,” Ruffo said. “Some things in life really put things into perspective, hoping for a positive result.”

Same-sex poll interest rises Australian voters, activist groups and political parties are all gearing up for the same-sex marriage ballot, despite an Australian High Court challenge.

The Australian Electoral Commission, which on an average day gets about 4000 requests for updates for changes of address and from new voters, on Thursday received 68,000 applications.

Voters have until August 24 to update their details.

In a significant boost to the “yes” campaign, GetUp revealed it would work with marriage equality groups to run a “powerful grassroots campaign” but would also support one of the High Court challenges.

“If we are forced to a postal survey on marriage equality, GetUp will defer to the results of a recent survey conducted of the LGBTIQ community ... which indicates the community does not support a boycott, and thus engage in a campaign to win a ‘Yes’

result,” campaign director Sally Rugg said.

A survey by the organisation says 72 per cent of Australians support a change in marriage laws.

GetUp is backing the Human Rights Law Centre legal challenge to the government’s proposed postal survey on marriage equality and will fundraise from

its membership to help cover costs.

A second challenge by the Public Interest Advocacy Centre is also being heard on Friday, which could lead to an injunction being issued to temporarily stop the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ work on the ballot.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has urged supporters of same-

sex marriage to get behind the “yes” case, despite his ongoing concerns about the $122 million “dog’s breakfast” postal ballot.

He invited Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to co-sign a letter to every Australian in support of a “yes” vote.

Turnbull was circumspect about Shorten’s call for a jointletter, again criticising Labour’s decision to block the February plebiscite.

“I’ve been a supporter of gay marriage much longer than him,” he told 3AW radio.

“Whether I sign a letter with Bill Shorten, I’ll reflect on whether that is useful. It may actually be counter-productive.”

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann says the government is open to considering legislation to allow for the usual election rules to apply to the survey. A a result is expected to be announced on November 15.

Snapchat revenue loss More turmoil for Uber as exec quits

Photo app Snapchat added seven million new users in the past three months, its latest financial results show, but parent company Snap has failed to live up to Wall Street’s expectations.

Snap’s revenue of $US181.7 million was well below the $US189 million predicted for its second quarter as a public company.

It reported a net loss of $US443 million, up from $US116 million in the same period in 2016.

Snapchat’s daily active users rose to 173 million, compared with the 166 million reported in the previous quarter, but continues to trail many of its rivals.

Snap has suffered from falling stock prices since floating on the US share market earlier this year.

Some of this fall has been driven by pressure from Facebook’s family of apps – including Insta-

gram – which have successfully introduced features similar to Snapchat in order to entice users to their services.

Since introducing a Stories feature similar to that of Snapchat, Instagram has seen daily use of the feature rise to more than 250 million, eclipsing Snapchat’s entire user base.

However, Snapchat’s user growth for the quarter was up 21 per cent on the same period last year.

Uber faces a fresh round of turmoil, with a top executive resigning and a major investor suing the ride-hailing company’s former CEO. Global operations chief Ryan Graves told Uber staff in an email early Friday he would move out of his role as senior vice-president of global operations in mid-September.

Graves will remain on Uber’s board.

That board – and its support for former chief executive Travis Kalanick – was the subject of a lawsuit filed on Friday

by Benchmark Capital Partners.

It claims Kalanick is trying to pack Uber’s board with his allies and eventually return to his

post as CEO. The venture capital firm says that would harm Uber’s shareholders, employees, drivers and customers.

Benchmark is a major investor, with 13 per cent of Uber’s stock.

A spokesman for Kalanick said the lawsuit was “completely without merit and riddled with lies and false allegations”.

Kalanick resigned under pressure in June after an investigation into harassment and other behaviour problems at the San Francisco-based company.

He quickly appointed himself to one of three board seats he created in 2016.

In brief British jogger arrested British police hunting a jogger who knocked a woman into the path of a bus on Putney Bridge have arrested a 41-year-old man on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. The arrest was made at a property in west London following a “good response” from a public appeal to catch the suspect. CCTV showed the bus swerving, narrowly avoiding the 33-year-old woman, who suffered minor injuries. Some 15 minutes later, the suspect passed his victim again on the bridge, going the other way, and ignored her when she tried to talk to him, police said. - PA

Kenyan election The Kenyan opposition coalition has asked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to name its leader, Raila Odinga, president of the country. The National Super Alliance claims that an anonymous member of the IEBC had allegedly unveiled that the commission had given a 700,000-vote advantage to the current head of state, Uhuru Kenyatta. NASA spokesperson Musalia Mudavadi said in a press conference that the published results, which showed that Kenyatta had won the recent election with 54 per cent of the vote, were fraudulent and based on a computer hack.

2016 hottest yet Global warming has helped fuel the hottest year on record in 2016, with greenhouse gas concentrations reaching a new high, a US government report says. The report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also cites a strong El Nino cycle as a factor behind the third consecutive year of record global warmth. The report released on Thursday says last year’s global weather was far more extreme or record breaking than anything approaching normal.

NOAA’s annual state of the climate 2016 report highlighted numerous records including hottest year, highest sea level and lowest sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctica.

The report said the world’s glaciers shrank, fo r the 37th year in a row, by an average of about a metre.

Semi-finalists decided

The final round of the pool stage of Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier competition wrapped up on Thursday evening, with all teams fighting it out for the best position heading in to the finals.

In the first match of the night, Ashburton College and Methven fought it out for second and third, with AshColl taking the win 2925.

With it looking likely, heading in to the night’s matches, that Hampstead would beat United, either AshColl or Methven would need the four points to avoid

playing unbeaten Celtic in the semi-finals.

It was Methven who started the brighter of the two sides, limiting turnovers and working the ball well to the goal.

At the end of the first-quarter they had a two-goal lead, with the scoreboard reading 9-7.

The same trend continued for the first three minutes of the second-quarter until AshColl goal attack Georgina Kelly grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck.

Five minutes through the quarter, AshColl had taken the lead for the first time, leading 11-12, and that was when AshColl really put

the hammer down.

Kelly scored the majority of the points in the quarter, also battling hard with the Methven defenders to force several turnovers.

The lead quickly raced out of Methven’s sight, with AshColl leading 19-13 at halftime, with Methven spending nearly five minutes without scoring a goal.

Methven came out stronger in the third stanza, matching AshColl goal for goal and began to chip away at the lead that had come out of nowhere, and were able to bring it back to three, with the score at 24-21 in AshColl’s favor.

In the fourth-quarter, the game became more rushed, and the physical niggles that had been present throughout the game continued to crop up.

Both sides turned the ball over frequently, but it was AshColl that was able to turn it in to goals, extending their lead to 28-22 with five minutes to go.

Methven’s shooters appeared shaky and lacked confidence in the shots they were taking, forcing regular battles under the goals for rebounds.

In the end, AshColl were able to see the game out, with the final score of 29-25.

They will face Hampstead in one of the semi-finals after they were able to cruise to victory against United 31-18.

Celtic, with top spot already booked, ran out to a 38-24 win against Southern and will play Methven in their semi-final.

In the premier 2 grade, Rakaia booked top spot heading in to the finals with a 54-22 thrashing of Southern B, while Ashburton College B secured second place with a 35-31 win against Hampstead B. In the clash between the Celtic B and C sides, it was the B side that came out on top, winning 43-31.

Mid Canty set to kick season off

Tall Blacks topple Lebanon The young Tall Blacks have claimed their biggest scalp on their biggest stage to date.

The inexperienced squad have defeated hosts Lebanon 86-82 in front of a raucous crowd at the Asia Cup, in one of the most impressive victories by the national team in several years.

Lebanon were installed as one of the favourites to win the Asia Cup, and their experienced roster was always going to be a tough proposition for the Tall Blacks side bereft of their older heads.

However, the Tall Blacks’ youth brigade shone through, in a performance infinitely better than their opening victory over Kazakhstan.

Up against a completely different class of opposition, the Tall Blacks’ showed increased fluid-

ity on offence, with Shea Ili once again marshalling the troops with 22 points, three rebounds and four assists.

You could have expected the Tall Blacks to be out-manned and overwhelmed by the Lebanese physicality, but aside from a few early moments, Paul Henare’s side showed they weren’t overawed by the occasion.

The game was won with the Tall Blacks’ aggression – and execution – in the paint. Reuben Te Rangi (18 points and eight rebounds) was rejected at the rim on multiple occasions, but kept up the attacking mentality, throwing down a pivotal fourthquarter poster. Tohi Smith-Milner - initially not named in the Tall Blacks squad – had the most important showing of his ca-

reer; a presence at the rim with 15 points and six rebounds in 30 minutes of action.

Smith-Milner snared five offensive boards as the Tall Blacks hauled in 17 second chance opportunities – allowing the visitors extra possessions and ensuring they won the rebounding battle, 38-30.

Sam Timmins, just 20 years of age, grabbed four of those offensive rebounds, and was a big influence with 13 points and eight rebounds. While he had some defensive lapses, his deft offensive touches around the hoop created plenty of looks, and helped the Tall Blacks overcome a lacklustre 5/21 shooting night from outside.

The Tall Blacks also had to overcome a superb performance

from 37-year-old standout Fadi El Khatib, whose performance gave Lebanon the lead early on.

His showing kept Lebanon right in the hunt, but foul trouble allowed the Tall Blacks to begin to pull away, opening up a nine point lead in the third quarter.

That deficit evaporated upon his return, with the home crowd going wild as they pulled level with five minutes remaining.

The result remained in flux until the final minute, the teams trading baskets and stops, before a steal by Te Rangi led to Finn Delany finishing off an alley-oop, giving the Tall Blacks a four point lead that they would hold until the final buzzer.

The Tall Blacks next take on Korea, at 3.30am on Sunday.

The cost of being so damn good A

fter the All Blacks named their latest squad for the upcoming season, it was not the new names and exciting young prospects such as Rieko Ionae or Ngani Laumape that were grabbing the headlines, but the omissions of Julian Savea and Matt Todd.

Firstly, the dropping of Savea is not surpising, perfectly linked with his frequent dropping of the ball, and just general mehness.

While the wheels have fallen off the bus, there is no doubt he could easily find the form again that will see him break the All Blacks try record, with his astounding 46 tries in 54 tests.

The baffling choice from the selectors was the axeing of Crusaders flanker Matt Todd.

Even just a quick glance over social media in the past week would show every other post mentioning the outrage of him not being selected.

It does boggle the mind as to how someone who has been either the best or second best openside flanker this season doesn’t get a look in.

There is no question Cane, Kaino, Read and Ardie Savea need to be there, but Liam Squire and Vaea Fifita are very middle of the ground, and are not better options than Todd.

It is a great example of the New Zealand Rugby culture.

No matter how good things are, they are never right.

In recent years, the All Blacks have had a scary win rate, one that any international team in

any other sport would envy, and yet we still have fans that are unhappy.

Complaints about refs and other such things roll off the tongue easily, or the ability to blame players, such as what has been highlighted in Stephen Donald’s new book.

I think it just serves as a good gentle reminder for New Zealand rugby fans to be a bit more humble.

What we have here is special, nobody will anticipate this squad to lose to Australia, and it would seem unlikely the loss of Matt Todd will make a huge difference, so let us just sit down, shut up and enjoy the All Blacks.

The Mid Canterbury “A” Rugby side will kick off their season today with a pre-season hit-out against Otago Country in Hinds.

“We haven’t played them too much in the past few seasons but they are Otago Country so we are expecting big forwards and that they will try to run us round at the breakdowns,” said coach Dale Palmer.

“We have our gameplan and believe our guys can run them in to the ground. Defensively we have been working on how to stop them in the past few weeks.

Each squad will bring 25 players to the game to give them a chance to test themselves ahead of the upcoming season.

“Our team’s kind of purpose is that we are there to support the Heartland team and help the players make the step up to that level but we also want to be winning our competition,” he said.

“The hope is that if we are performing well, the players will be getting looked at for that team and they can make the step up.”Palmer said the response from the players so far had been good, and despite a few injuries, numbers for training had been good, while they would be calling on a few colts to fill out the squad for 25 today.

Fox loses his way Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox has lost his way after a strong start to the PGA Championship in North Carolina.

Fox moved into the top 10 early in his opening round after two birdies over his first nine holes but dropped six shots to finish with a four over par 75.

Fox’s final nine started ominously with two straight bogies, before a bogey on the par-three fourth and a triple on the par-four fifth send him tumbling down the leaderboard. One final bogey on the seventh saw him sign for a 41, and finish his first round in a share of 80th.

He is a shot ahead of fellow Kiwi Danny Lee who shot a similarly wild five over par 76.

Lee started his round with four pars, but quickly fell off the pace with three bogies before the turn.

It was coming home where his round started to fluctuate, with three birdies, three bogies and a double bogey creating a colourful scorecard.

Lee only hit seven of the 18 greens in regulation, and only five of 14 fairways, leaving him requiring an under-par round tomorrow to make the cut, as will Fox. - NZME

With many of these boys gunning for a spot in the Heartland team, it should be a good game to watch.

Two left in the hunt

He scored, just not first, so Kieran Read let us down for our punt of the week last week.

For this week’s punt of the week, we are looking at a long term investment. About nine months to be in fact, courtesy of a Premier League outright winners prediction.

Manchester City have strengthened well and have been in red-hot form in the preseason, and we are backing them to win the league.

Two of Mid Canterbury’s three hockey sides are set to battle it out in the first stage of the finals this weekend.

The Wakanui men’s side narrowly missed out on making it in to the finals, finishing one point behind Tainui.

They will have the chance to cheer on

Hampstead/Collegians today when they host Craighead, who were the last side they played, drawing 2-2.

Their sister side, Hampstead, will face some tough opposition when they travel down to Timaru and take on Timaru Girls’ High School, who finished top of the competition and who they drew with 0-0 last Saturday.

Hooker Leni Apisai leaves Hurricanes for the Blues Former New Zealand under-20 captain and Maori All Blacks hooker Leni Apisai has left the Hurricanes and signed on for the Blues until 2019.

The 21-year-old, who will play for Wellington in the national provincial championship, has been a member of the Hurricanes squad since 2016.

Apisai played for New Zealand Schools in 2013 and was part of the New Zealand under-20 side that won the world final in 2015, going on to captain the team in 2016.

He was promoted to the Maori All Blacks at just 20 years of age for their northern tour

last year, making his debut as a replacement for the tour captain Ash Dixon against Munster.

Blues high performance manager Tony Hanks said Apisai was a valuable signing.

“Leni is a player with proven Super Rugby ability and has developed leadership qualities,” he said.

“He will add important depth as well as competition to the position with All Black James Parsons and Northland captain Matt Moulds as the hookers in the Blues squad for 2018.”

go past her but then I might die but when I saw it was only sixty at the bell then I was like well I probably shouldve done.

“I go through in 58 fine, but then I didnt seem to have it in that last 100m it just felt a weird race I just didn’t get going properly but I still gave it everything

in the last 100m but it just didnt feel like I was as sharp as I was hoping,” said Petty.

The 25-year-old from Christchurch is coached by Danny Mackey in the States.

Semenya won Petty’s heat in 2: 01.33.

Season heads down to wire

As the football season rapidly approaches the final few weeks, things are getting serious for a few of Mid Canterbury’s footballing sides.

With the regular season wrapped up in division two for the Mid Canterbury seniors, the competition now moves in to a knockout stage.

Mid Canterbury will travel up to Christchurch to take on the FC Twenty 11 Thunder Panthers in

the knockout rounds, with it being their last game should they lose.

In the division four knockouts, Methven will host Selwyn UFC who they beat once and drew with once this season.

In the masters division three, they are still plugging away in the round robin, with Mid Canterbury travelling to Christchurch to take on FC Twenty 11 RSA. In the junior grades, the Mid Canterbury 19th grade side will have a shot at revenge against

CashTech at the Ashburton Domain.

A win or a draw will see Mid Canterbury confirm the league with a bye next week, but due to a large goal difference, a loss would still likely see them lift take the title.

With all the youth fixutres being reversed this week after cancellations earlier in the season, the 17th grade side will be hoping to bounce back from their 3-2 loss to FC Twenty 11 Blue last week with a win.

In division one, the 15th grade side will hope to turn the one point they picked up against Waimak black last week into three points at the Ashburton Domain this week.

In the women’s grade, with three weekends to go, the Mid Canterbury side has wrapped up the league, with a lead of 12 points. Their main goal now will be to finish the season unbeaten, and they will have this weekend off with Hornby United having already defaulted the match.

Force officially axed from Super Rugby The 15 teams participating in the 2018 Super Rugby competition have officially been confirmed.

The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) yesterday discontinued the Western Force Super Rugby licence, with the Force the third team to be cut following two South African franchises, the Kings and Cheetahs.

As a result, the competition is culled from 18 teams to 15 for next season.

The decision comes after several weeks of consultation with rugby bodies and stakeholders, including Government and commercial partners.

ARU Chairman, Cameron Clyne said: “The ARU Board has today made the decision to discontinue the Western Force as

the Super Rugby competition reverts to fifteen teams for the 2018 season.

“Our decision to exit the Western Force has been guided primarily by financial outcomes.

“This has been a complex process to reduce Australia’s Super Rugby representation to four teams as agreed by SANZAAR following its review of the competition.

“We are regretful that this issue has consumed so much of the public commentary on the game in 2017. It was clearly not our intention for this to play out over such a lengthy period however there have been factors outside the ARU’s control that have prevented us from completing the process.

“As we have reinforced

throughout this process, there are commercial realities which are linked to declining on-field performance across our Super Rugby teams which has put Australian Rugby in a position where it can no longer sustain five teams.

“Furthermore, the significant unbudgeted support funding that has been provided to Super Rugby teams over the past five years has greatly affected our capacity to invest in community rugby.

“This is a sad day for rugby, especially for Western Force fans.

We accept that there will be anger and resentment over this decision and we sympathise with those fans. We sincerely hope that they are not lost to the game forever.

“The decision to exit the Western Force from Super Rugby is not a decision to abandon the game in Western Australia.

“Western Australia will retain an important place in Australian Rugby and the ARU will continue to support youth development programmes and the community game in the West.

There will be a clear pathway for young Western Australian Rugby players to reach the highest level and represent the Wallabies.

“Our immediate concern is to support the individuals at the Western Force through these difficult circumstances and we will deploy various ARU management staff to Western Australia to provide assistance to all players and staff.”

It’s a time of change at the head of the domestic associations with only Otago (Mike Coggan) and Central Districts (Pete de Wet) having CEOs in place from last year. Kopua to return Former Silver Ferns captain Casey Kopua will return for her 15th season in Magic colours in 2018.

The star defender, who debuted for the Waikato-Bay of Plenty franchise in 2003, is among a handful of signings announced by the Magic yesterday. Kopua will be joined on court by a trio of young talent in Sam Sinclair, Kelly Jury and Monica Falkner, who have all recommitted to the franchise.

Tuke’s Mapfre were pipped by just 56 seconds in the famous Fastnet Race by China’s Dongfeng Race Team in a thrilling finish to the two-and-a-half-day race. The Kerikeri sailor said he took a lot from the event. “You make one mistake and someone will pass you. You think you’ve been going well and you look around and see the other boats still around you,” he said.

Willis in semi-finals Although feeling sluggish Nick Wills made it comfortably through to the semi-finals of the 1500m at the IAAF World Championships in London. Racing in the second of three heats and needing to finish in the first six or the next six fastest times Wills finished fifth in 3:42.75 and 16th out of the 24 who qualified. “It felt really comfortable. All that mattered was getting through using as little possible energy. I felt a little sluggish but not tired from working too hard.”

In brief Driving scholarship Pukekohe student Liam Lawson will be the CareVets Racing Team’s scholarship driver in the coming 2017-2018 Toyota 86 Championship. “It’s a real honour to be selected, the scholarship has been a fast track for the drivers chosen in past seasons and I’m looking forward to racing in a two-car, professionally run team like this,” he said. He will contest the series alongside CareVets’ 2016-2017 scholarship winner and series rookie of the year Jack Milligan from Christchurch.

Though he is just 15 years old, Lawson is a young man in a hurry. He is currently second overall in the Australian Formula 4 Championship with two rounds remaining and won the 2016-2017 Formula Ford 1600 championship.

Parker backs Floyd

The reaction by one of Tom Walsh’s main rivals, to his medal win has left Walsh stunned and may have strained their relationship.

Walsh’s party crashed Tom Walsh’s surprise shot put victory at the World Athletics Championships – and his rivals’ reaction to it – may leave some strained relations for the remainder of the northern summer.

The Kiwi upset defending champion Joe Kovacs and Olympic champion Ryan Crouser with his final-round 22.03m throw in London, having led for most of the competition.

Kovacs finished second and Crouser was out of the medals, but both protested big throws

ruled foul that they considered legal. But while Kovacs accepted his defeat, Crouser clearly did not, even turning up to the medal ceremony in full dress uniform, still hoping for promotion onto the podium.

“The thing that disappoints me is the way Crouser went about it,” Walsh said from London. “Joe took the answer that they gave him the first time and was like, ‘cool, they’ve made a decision, so that’s that’.

“To be honest, if I was in their position I would have done the

same. It [the call] was close.

“But the way Crouser went about it 24 hours afterwards, turning up to the warm-up track just before our medal ceremony in his podium attire ... I saw him and was like, ‘what’s going on?

Am I meant to know something?’

“It was just the wrong way to go about it, in my opinion and I know a lot of other guys around the circuit think the same. In the medal ceremony room before we went out, we still didn’t know [what was happening].

“It wasn’t only going to affect

me, it was also going to affect Joe and [Croatian Stipe Zunic], who was winning his first ever medal (at a major championships), and that meant a hell of a lot to him.”

Crouse and Walsh have enjoyed a great relationship on tour – the American visited New Zealand earlier this year to compete and enjoy some hunting – but that may change in the aftermath of this result.

“I’m not going to hold a grudge,” said Walsh. “If he still wants to talk about it, I’m not going to talk about it.”

Rousey training for pro wrestling career Ronda Rousey gained superstar status for her dominance in mixed martial arts, and for her looks, and she parlayed both into acting jobs. With her UFC career appearing to be over, it makes sense that Rousey, who has already appeared in the ring at a 2015 WrestleMania event, might look into a stint with the WWE. That could be exactly the plan for the former UFC champion and Olympic judo bronze medalist, as a website devoted to MMA and wrestling recently reported that Rousey has gone “as far as to learn some of the basics” of pro wrestling. According to Fightful. com, which cited WWE sources, the company “referred Rousey ... to current superstar Brian Kendrick for training purposes in Southern California.”

Ronda Rousey executive Triple H at a taping for the Mae Young Classic, the company’s all-female tournament.

She was ostensibly on hand to cheer for her friend Shayna Baszler, a former UFC fighter competing in the tournament, but her presence sparked renewed speculation that she herself might be close to joining the action.

“There was also buzz backstage at the tournament – mainly among WWE employees and contractors – that Rousey’s training would start soon,” Fightful reported. “She’s taken some basic bumps among other things thus far.”

Adding to the drumbeat, WWE announcer Jim Ross said last week that he thought it was “inevitable” that Rousey would be “a big star” for his company. “I see her in a WrestleMania someday,” he told TMZ Sports. “It’s too great an opportunity for her to pass up and WWE to pass up – it’s a match made in heaven.”

Rousey herself has said in the past that she would “love to have the chance to be the Divas world champion,” referring to the WWE’s female wrestlers.

She has most recently been seen on ABC’s Battle of the Network Stars, but a spate of WWE-centric

Kiwi heavyweight champion Joseph Parker says Floyd Mayweather is his big favourite to beat Conor McGregor but isn’t ruling out an upset either. Parker, in training at his Las Vegas base for his WBO world heavyweight title defence against Hughie Fury next month, has spent time with Mayweather and believes the American will be too skilful for UFC champion McGregor. “He’s the bigger guy. In terms of boxing, everyone is going for Floyd because he’s been a champion for a long time. But if McGregor lands a big shot, it might be a different story.”

Big deal for PIutau Former All Black and Blues fullback Charles Piutau is to become the highest paid player in world rugby next year, according to reports. The British Telegraph is reporting that Piutau has signed a deal with Championship side Bristol worth £1 million ($NZ1.78m) per season. The 16-test All Black will join the English club at the 2018/19 season after he signed a two-year deal. He currently has one year left on his deal with Irish province Ulster. The deal will eclipse former All Blacks number 10 Dan Carter as the highest paid club player on the world stage.

Canadian fans have been informed that the world champion All Blacks will be playing Canada in Vancouver in early November. This will be of particular interest to Steve Hansen and friends who will be preparing to play a test in France at the time.

The situation is cleared up with a quote from Rugby Canada CEO Allen Vansen, who states: “The Maori All Blacks are one of the most iconic and recognisable franchises in the world and we can’t wait to play them in front of some of Canada’s most passionate rugby fans.” The Maori and national sevens teams were re-branded as All Black teams in 2012. Last year, NZR chief executive Steve Tew said “economic reality” meant the change was here to stay. - NZME

Breeders’ Stakes for smart 3YO An early three-year-old plan is in place for the talented Not Usual Trip to bag his first black type victory.

“It will be quiet steps as he’s a lovely horse with a nice action,” said Donna Logan, who trains the Stryker colt with Chris Gibbs.

“At this stage there’s a 1000 metre race for him here and then the stakes race.”

She was referring to the Listed Tavistock Northland Breeders’ Stakes at Ruakaka on September 16.

Not Usual Trip has impressed in a brief career with an easy debut win at Ellerslie in April before he finished fourth in the Listed Waikato Equine Centre Veterinary Stakes at Te Rapa behind Ardossan, who is now in Mick Price’s Caulfield stable.

He was then freshened to resume on his home track last month and he coasted to a five and a-half length victory.

Those performances have attracted buyer interest in Not Usual Trip, who is raced by Hongwei Chen and Alex Teng’s Horse Feng Bloodstock.

Meanwhile, there is confidence in Rocstock’s ability to add to his record in the near future.

Houlahan on radar New Zealand jumper Stormin Norman is making excellent progress ahead of a crack at an Australian jumping feature.

“The one that beat her is a good horse too, so whether she would have beaten her or not I don’t know, but we were really happy with her run.

“She has been working well. It’s just a matter of maintaining now, she is race fit now so I don’t need to do too much with her.”

Liquid Inspiration will once again tackle a heavy track over 1200m on Saturday, which poses

no concern for Hillis, however the right-handed way of going at Pukekohe Park does.

“The only slight reservation is going right-handed,” he said.

“She does feel a little bit better going left-handed, but in saying that she hasn’t got a very good action anyway so it’s hard to tell.”

Hillis has identified Az Given and Crafty Jess as two major threats, but said it is hard to split the competitive field.

Shaun McKay will take the ride,

replacing injured stable apprentice Darren Danis who fractured his T4 and T5 vertebrae in a race fall at Washdyke late last month.

“Darren had an operation last Friday which was 100 per cent successful,” Hillis said. “He’s got some screws and rods put in his back and he was up walking the next day.

“He is actually coming back up here today, he has still been down in Christchurch.”
