Vetlife is offering a generous support package, including $150,000 of free consultations to struggling dairy farmers as they and other vets noticed a slow-down in call-outs during calving. The package includes a complementary two hours with a vet to review and discuss farmers’ animal health
plans and benchmarked animal health costs from last season. A delayed payment system has also been set up for some drugs to ensure animal welfare standards are maintained by farmers during the calving season. Vetlife Ashburton dairy veterinarian Lorna Humm said there had been a marked decline in vet call-outs for dairy farmers at this time of year as
many were choosing to euthanise cows on farm rather than treating them. “We want to do what we can for dairy farmers. They are our lifeblood.” Dr Humm said the gesture was “from the heart” and not driven by commercial realities.
