THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY

Park deal falls over BY SUE NEWMAN

A $30 million deal that was to create an agri-business innovation park in Ashburton has fallen over, but the concept behind the deal is still alive. In March 2012 Grow Mid Canterbury, the Ashburton District Council and Eden AgriCapital announced plans to establish a centre of innovation and research at the Ashburton Business Estate. Since then the project has been dealt a double whammy with its funder folding and Lincoln University stealing some of its thunder with its own plans for a new research and development unit. The project itself was still to the fore as Grow Mid Canterbury built

its economic strategy for the district, chief executive Rob Brawley said. “We won’t be giving up on this; it’s too important for the district, but we need to get support and interest from those industries.” The memorandum of understanding over funding had been cancelled, but Grow Mid Canterbury had spoken with other potential investors who had shown interest, he said. “Up until recently all the focus has been on Lincoln and that’s certainly been a distraction for us in terms of what we were planning here, but it just means we’ll need to have a tighter focus around irrigation and small seeds.” Rather than competing with Lin-

coln, Ashburton would be looking to build a relationship with the university, Mr Brawley said. “This has the capacity to be pretty important to this district. Lincoln is our key, investors will come on board and there will be industry uptake once we have a clearer view; once we have a stronger idea of the concept.” The agri-business park was the strategy that would help businesses in those two areas grow and develop, he said “Part of what the park would have been will now happen at Lincoln, the shape that our part takes will now be different but it will be linked to added value processing; this is the key to Mid Canterbury’s growth.”

With roots stretching back to 1875, Heartland has a proud history of supporting small-to-medium sized businesses, farms and families in Canterbury. It’s great to offer the people of Ashburton a local banking option that is 100% for New Zealand.
