Changing times for firefighters

Latest statistics from Fire and Emergency New Zealand show the district’s firefighters have been attending more crashes, including more serious crashes that require specialist equipment to extricate victims from vehicles.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand statistics show that from July 1, 2018 until June 30, 2019, firefighters across the district at-

tended a total of 97 crashes, an increase of 57 compared to the same time period in 2014/15.

Of those 97 crashes, four involved a death, while 13 required the extrication of someone from a vehicle.

The further 80 were classed as ‘other’, and include activities such as providing manpower, traffic control or road washing down.

Compared to July 1, 2014 until June

30, 2015, it is more than double the total amount of crashes, with firefighters attending 40 in that timeframe.

One of those involved a fatality, six required extrications and 33 were classed as other.

Mayfield Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Ian Fielder said there had been a noticeable shift in the types of callouts they had been attending over the years.

“When I joined about 23 years ago all we

did was attend vegetation fires and once in a blue moon we might attend an mva (motor vehicle accident) or a house fire,” he said.

“Now we get called to a lot more medical assists and motor vehicle accidents.”

Students celebrate the past

Changing times for firefighters

Methven Primary School students last week demonstrated to their families and friends just how much work they had packed into term two.

In an evening that was high on entertainment, through song, dance and in demonstrations, the students presented work on early New Zealand and New Zealand culture.

The interactive event involved all students and was presented under the banner Ko Tatau Tenei (This is us). It reflected New Zealand’s past with stories told through poi action, in song and dance and through music. Senior students acted stories taken from letters from the past.

Also included was a segment to recognise the school’s growing Filipino community with students presenting items that reflected their culture through dance and nursery rhymes.

Parents did more than sit back and be entertained, they were involved in a number of activities as well.

From P1 Hinds Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Dave Kingsbury said the mix of callouts had really changed in his time with the brigade as well.

“We have always had around the same number of callouts, it is just what they are that has changed,” he said.

“It is probably reflective of the additional training we have received for medical responses and we are getting called to a lot more medical events, especially now that we carry a defibrillator.

“If a call comes in to St John and if they decide we can get there a lot quicker they dispatch us so we can make the initial assessments while they are still on the road.”

Kingsbury said farmers being more safety conscious and experienced in managing controlled fires on their farms had meant fewer callouts for fires for the brigade as well.

“Last year 12 out of first 14 callouts were medical assists,” he said.

Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Alan Burgess said their situation was more different and that the number of crashes they attend would ebb and flow over several years.

“There is no real rhyme or reason for why one year might be worse than another year, some years we have are really bad, and some aren’t,” he said.

Skiing by the light of the moon

When the full moon rises on Friday it will be shining on what could be a history making event.

The Mt Hutt Skifield team will be opening the field for a Moon Ski event that will give skiers an opportunity to dine under the stars and ski by moonlight.

While moonlight ski events have been held overseas, sales and marketing manager Richie Owen believes Mt Hutt’s event is a first for New Zealand.

Tickets to the night ski event must be pre-purchased through the NZSki.com website with two dining options – a barbecue on the balcony or a three course meal in the restaurant. Transport to the field will be available but the cost of this is not included in the ticket price.

The event will be about more than skiing as a fireworks display will be staged and entertainment will be provided by Luke Glendining and a team of DJs. Admission to the event, which will be held at Canterbury View approximately 7km along the access road, and skiers will be required to show their ticket confirmation email and a form of photo ID to gain entry.

Gates will open at 6.30pm, with the event running until 11pm.

The Summit Six will run from 9pm-11pm.

Skier numbers have been limited to 400 and they were being snapped up, Owen said Skiers of all ages can take part in the event but all will pay the same ticket price.

Day skiers will have a shorter day on the field as vehicles must leave the mountain by 4pm to ensure it can be groomed and prepared for the Moon Ski event.

The event was part of the mountain team’s drive to provide new and novel on-field events, Owen said.

Running a normal ski day then bringing on a new shift for the evening, ensuring grooming was carried out before and after the event and then being ready to open the following morning relied on some pretty fine tuning, he said.

In the event the Moon Ski is unable to go ahead due to weather, it will be rescheduled for the following night, August 17 with September 14 as the last back-up date.

The event is a one-off for this season, but if it’s a hit with skiers, a repeat will definitely be on the cards next year, Owen said.

Staff support their principals

When their staff went on strike over failed pay talks, primary school principals gave them their support and on Friday, primary school staff across New Zealand returned the favour.

Staff dressed in green to show their support for the principals’ failed talks and in some schools turned on morning tea.

While teachers had achieved a settlement of their wage and condition claims, the claims of principals were not part of those negotiations, said Ashburton Borough principal Hilary Boyce.

“That was the disadvantage of doing both contracts at the same time, ours got a little lost.”

The role of a school principal was wide and it was challenging, whether the sector was primary, intermediate or

secondary, Boyce said.

While a secondary school was generally larger, that size meant a principal would have more support staff and more senior staff to share the load while some primary school principals might have very little support, she said.

“A primary principal deals with everything, from clearing a blocked toilet or toileting issues with a child through to very complex staff issues.”

Primary and intermediate school principals are seeking pay parity with secondary principals and will next week hold a series of paid union meetings. Ashburton’s meeting will be held on Wednesday.

They rejected a collective agreement offer from the Ministry of Education in June that failed to give them the pay parity they were seeking and have been taking strike action since July that has seen them disengage from the ministry.

Farmers whose water takes from the Ashburton River are under review are banding together as a collective water users group to work through the review process.

Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers president David Clark, who is one of the 93 consent holders involved in the review, said Environment Canterbury had so far failed to provide the level of detail needed about how their water takes would be affected.

Farmers with surface and groundwater consents that affect the river have been notified of new conditions and have until September 12 to respond.

A pensioner is in hospital with serious facial injuries after he was bashed in the face during a burglary in Waikato on Friday night. Police are seeking Cyphrus McCaskill, 22, over the aggravated burglary which happened in Tirohia, south of Paeroa. Detective Senior Sergeant William Loughrin said a 66-year-old man received serious facial injuries and was transported to Waikato Hospital.

It’s thought the alleged offenders’ car broke down nearby before they stole a car from the address.

One of the alleged offenders, a 29-year-old Te Aroha man, was arrested on Saturday in Te Aroha and will appear at Hamilton District Court today.

A woman has died after a car hit a power pole in the rural town of Dunsandel on Saturday night. The incident occurred about 9.20pm on Dunsandel and Brookside Road about 40km west of Christchurch.

Police said the sole occupant of the vehicle, a 38-year-old woman, died in the single vehicle crash. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Conditions are being reviewed collectively in an effort to raise the minimum flow in the river to 6 cumecs by 2023.

Some existing water take consents don’t have minimum flow conditions.

A report on the impact on water availability on the regional council’s website provides data for eight surface water abstraction zones in the Ashburton River catchment.

ECan says all water takes will be impacted, the extent depending on where in the catchment the take is located.

The largest impact would obviously be on consents which did not currently have a minimum flow.

That modelling shows that in

a very dry year (like 2015-16) the number of days on full restriction in late summer would go from 31 to 58 for consent holders with State Highway 1 minimum flow conditions.

South branch takes would go from 31 to 62 and North branch takes from 31 to 85.

Clark said farmers were not impressed that ECan did not have detailed modelling and information ready to give to consent holders.

“Farmers are working to collectivise themselves in a water users group to then work our way through this process of the reviews.

“If ECan want to be effective, they need to have plans and policies with farmers.”

He said farmers were on board

and wanted a positive process, but forming a group to look after their interests. He supported the group.

“It is important that plans and regulations are fair and reasonable, and that farmers have a reasonable chance to comply with them for a fair and reasonable cost.”

Farmers have been told they may propose their own alternate consent conditions until September 12, or seek an extension to prepare more information, about the economic impact of less water on their businesses.

ECan will report progress of the review through the Ashburton Water Zone Committee, though feedback would be at a high level summary to respect the privacy of consent holders.

A man has received critical injuries following a serious assault in Mount Roskill, Auckland early yesterday. Police said they received reports of an assault on Gifford Ave around 3.10am. A 24-year-old man received critical injuries and was transported to Auckland Hospital. A witness at the scene said the man was found unconscious, with head injuries.

He said police investigators could be seen combing the area along a nearby creek for evidence. Six police cars along with nine staff were at the crime scene shortly after 4am. A police spokesman said inquiries are ongoing.

Cost of an eye check, ‘small change’ Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in New Zealand, affecting one in seven people over 50 years of age in some way. There is a free public seminar coming up in Ashburton, prompting Guardian reporter Susan Sandys to talk to Ashburton man Jim Kennedy, about living with the chronic disease.

It was five years ago that Jim Kennedy started to notice changes in his vision.

The retired chef who lives in Ashburton said the first sign was a perceivable lack of light in everything he looked at.

“The room always seemed dim,” he said.

The 70-year-old has two hobbies he enjoys the most – reading and rug making.

The latter in particular requires reasonably good eyesight, for distinguishing colours printed on the canvas and following a graph with symbols representing different yarns.

“Even on a bright sunny day I was finding it difficult to distinguish colours printed on the rug canvas I had just started working on,” Kennedy said.

“Reading was also becoming difficult for the same reason … especially the small print at the bottom of TV advertisements, it appeared as wavy lines.”

Over the next couple of weeks he started having difficulty recognising friends and acquaintances.

“Until they were very close to me, their faces seemed to be a blurry hole.”

One day he was slicing vegetables and had to slow down as he was having trouble with co-ordination.

“Judging distance was becoming a problem, I didn’t want to chop my fingers.”

It so happened he already had an appointment booked with his optometrist for a regular eye check, and when he went along he found out why he had been get-

ting all the symptoms he had been experiencing over the last six weeks.

“After checking my eyes he told me I had macular degeneration.”

This was prior to Kennedy and his wife moving to Ashburton in 2017. They lived in the Southland District Health Board area at the time, and he was soon booked in for an appointment at Dunedin Hospital’s eye department, and treatment with Avastin commenced more or less straight away. This is received as an injection into the eyeball.

“It sounds worse than it is, you don’t feel a thing,” he said.

Kennedy suspects his macular degeneration was passed down from his mother, who went blind as there was no treatment in those days. Additionally, he thinks cigarette smoke may have contributed.

“Being brought up in the 1960s in England we were surrounded by smokers, at home, in the workplace, pubs, restaurants, on the street and even in hospitals.

And I was a smoker for a while.”

He said because macular degeneration occurs rapidly, anyone noticing small changes in their eyesight should visit an optometrist or their doctor.

“The cost of an eye check is small change compared to going blind,” he said.

“Personally, I am grateful that my macular degeneration was detected and treated quickly and that I can continue to read, make latch-hook rugs, drive a car, go to the movies and live life to the full.”

Hotline for rough sleepers proposed NZME John Tamihere says as Auckland’s mayor he would create an 0800 JACINDA hotline to call if residents see rough sleepers or beggars.

Anyone who calls the number would find a “person all loving and caring that knows everything about your wellbeing” on the other end, he said.

A social worker would then be sent to work with the beggar.

Homeless people causing a “nuisance” by sleeping rough would be asked to go with the social worker – or find themself in breach of the law, Tamihere said yesterday as he released his begging and homelessness policy in the run-up to October’s election.

Mayor Phil Goff has slammed Tamihere’s policy proposals as nonsensical.

Tamihere claimed he would also force social workers to change their work hours, working three shifts so someone would be available around the clock.

“We have enough social workers in New Zealand, particularly in Auckland, to deal with working one-on-one,” he said.

“With each person found on the streets, social workers, like a lot of other workers in the supply side of our economy, must wake up to the fact that social work is a 24/7 job, and there will be a requirement that they work three shifts.”

Last year’s homeless count on September 17 found there were an estimated 800 people living without shelter in Auckland, and at least 2874 people in temporary accommodation.

But Tamihere called the count a “$500,000 political stunt” and said he didn’t need that to know the number of homeless and rough sleepers or where they sleep.

Homelessness was an issue for central Government, not local government or police, he said.

“The millions of dollars that Auckland Council splurges on subsidising central Government failure must stop.”

Mum’s breastfeeding drama NZME A Wellington mum is distraught after being told by a staffer at a Disney on Ice show to “move to the parent room” to breastfeed her baby boy.

Jen Maxwell, who was drawn to tears during the ordeal, said she was blown away as this was her third baby and she had never experienced anything like it before.

“This is 2019 and it’s a family Disney on Ice show for goodness sake.”

She wanted to share her story as she didn’t want any other mum to have to experience this kind of embarrassment.

“I’m glad it was me and not someone new to breastfeeding or someone having issues and struggling with feeding as it would be enough to put some people off it,” she said.

Her family had travelled from Wellington to Hamilton yesterday especially for the

show. Due to the loud noise Maxwell and her husband were taking turns holding their newborn outside the show.

“As bubba needed a feed, I headed out the door into the foyer which was empty except for the employees because the show was still on.”

Maxwell said she sat down on one of the seats and was in the middle of feeding him when a staff member came up to her and said “there is a family room down there” and pointed down a corridor.

“I said ‘actually I don’t think you can ask me to do that, he has every right to be fed here’. She said that I was sitting in a public space and people might not like it and could see me”.

Maxwell said there was a blanket covering her baby and no skin showing but the staffer told her: “children might see it and that wasn’t okay”.

Alleged sex trafficker Epstein found dead

Oscar-winner Lady Gaga has been accused of stealing the song Shallow from her hit movie A Star Is Born.

The singer is being threatened with a multimillion-dollar legal case by US songwriter Steve Ronsen who claims the melody of her hit song Shallow was stolen from a song he released in 2012, according to the Mirror UK. The nine-time Grammy-winning artist has been hit with a legal threat by Ronsen who claims just a few notes is based on his song Almost, which has less than a thousand streams on Soundcloud in five years. The three notes — G, A, B — correspond to the Shallow chorus lyrics, “I’m falling” and “longing for change”.

AP Jeffrey Epstein has been discovered dead in jail where he had been held pending trial on federal sex trafficking charges.

The 66-year-old billionaire investor had been accused of sex trafficking girls as young as 14 for himself and a number of his high-profile mates — including elite politicians, royalty and celebrities.

He was being held without bail in a Lower Manhattan jail cell after being arrested on 6 July.

He pleaded not guilty and faced up to 45 years in prison, news.com.au reports.

He was busted July 6 over the alleged sexual abuse of dozens of young girls in his Upper East Side townhouse and his waterfront mansion in Palm Beach, Florida, between 2002 and 2005.

In 2008, he pleaded guilty to a charge of solicitation of prostitution involving a 14-year-old girl, and was sentenced to 18 months in prison – of which he served just 13.

Women to shine in campaign

Once you hit 50 your best years are behind you, or are they?

Turning that belief around on its head is a new campaign by Ashburton photographer Emmily Harmer.

She has launched 50+and Fabulous, where she will photograph 50 women who have superseded the half-century milestone.

“They just want to be seen and be heard, they just want their moment to shine,” Harmer said.

Affectionately referred to as her 50 Over 50 project, Harmer said it would go some way towards correcting the noticeable lack of media representation of older women in society today.

Unless it was for the likes of dentures or incontinence pads, this group was generally ignored by advertisers as a target market. And older women were seldom represented in media generally.

At the completion of the project, Harmer plans to hold an exhibition where the photographs will be unveiled.

She so far had about 15 women on her books, and had completed photography for about 10 so far.

It costs $350 for people to take part, which includes professional hair and makeup, drinks and nibbles, a campaign T-shirt, and a free photo – which is generally worth about $275.

Tour a success Big Little Theatre Company actors, and their director Jackie Heffernan, took lessons from the best in England, including movie star and Shakespearian actor Simon Muller.

The 15 pupils, aged from 12 to 17, impressed wherever they went on their recent trip, highlights including performing on the very stage where the bard himself would have stood in Coventry and reciting Shakespeare on the Globe stage in London, where they trained, full-time, for a week.

They took lessons in voice, movement and the language of Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre and at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford upon Avon. Director Jackie Heffernan said the latter destination in particular presented an informative backdrop to their studies, as they learned of the history of Elizabethan England and visited the birthplace of Shakespeare. Summer singing school now in session

If you’re on your way past the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this week, keep an ear out for the hard-working vocal chords of 149 Mid Canterbury Summer Singing School (MCSSS) students.

The group launched into a week of practice yesterday before they bring a musical theatre production to the stage on Friday and Saturday.

It’s the biggest production yet for the MCSSS, which has been operating each January for 18 years and is musically helmed

by Ashburton singing tutor Jo Castelow.

“We now have people from all over, from as far as Timaru and Christchurch, and each time brings a new mix of voices,” said Castelow.

Some singers have been involved in the week-long course for more than 10 years, she said,

while more than half of this year’s junior group are newcomers.

The group range in age from 9 to 21 years and includes members of NAZDA and first-year university students.

This year’s production is themed Time Travellers and will cover musical theatre and tunes from across the ages – from My Fair Lady and Bing Crosby to recent hits like Hamilton and Moana, along with everything in between, Castelow said. “Among the juniors everyone knows the songs from Moana, but they find that they love singing the older ones just as much,” she said.

And not only does the theme provide something for everyone in the audience, she said, but gives the young singers the opportunity to learn about various musicals. The group received their music a month ago, and auditioned for solo positions on unSunday. They are currently un dergoing two days of musical

A number of older buildings around the Ashburton District will shortly be sporting signs that spell out how they rank against new building standards.

As part of the on-going drive to ensure all buildings will be earthquake safe, the Ashburton District Council will be sending signs to owners of buildings built prior to 1976 and will be asking them to display those signs prominently on the outside of their property.

The public notification is part of the council’s drive to ensure every older building has been inspected by engineers and that where required, strengthen-

ing work is either carried out or planned in the future.

It’s been a long process getting to this point, council building services manager Michael Wong said, but the placard templates had now arrived and these would be sent to property owners over the next month.

The placards would serve a two fold purpose – making the public aware of a building’s compliance level and encouraging owners to carry out necessary strengthening work.

Wong anticipates there will be about 150 sent out in February to owners of non-compliant buildings.

already assessed. Then we’ll do another desk top review and pick up the ones we may have missed and we’ll work with them,” he said.

Buildings that have not been assessed will be given the lowest rating until an assessment is done, Wong said.

There had been a proposal to change the rules so the cut-off date for engineering assessment would have moved forward to cover all buildings built before 2004 and that would have seen hundreds of buildings around the district bearing stickers, he said.

The consultation process ensured there was no date change

and that dramatically reduced the number of buildings coming into the net locally.

If a building is required to have THE a placard displayed it will contain information on the percentage it complies with building standards and the year with which it will need to be strengthened to come up to code, Wong said.

Older buildings that have been assessed and found to be up to strength or that have already been strengthened will not need to display placards.

Details on the placard-bearing buildings will be held on a public register with the Ministry of Building and this is accessible to anyone.

All money had been cleared from the box before the theft, but Raisbeck said she was still gutted to discover the break-in, which she presumes is the work of people “who don’t care about other people”.

However, with new security methods for Raisbeck and an ultra-secure honesty box for Billie, both stalls are continuing to operate.

Te Araroa walkers are on the rise, benefiting the summer tourism industry in Methven.

Many who do the 3000-kilometre trail, which runs the length of New Zealand, end up in the ski town, as it is a natural resting point near the uncrossable Rakaia River.

Methven i-SITE consultant Lyndsay Agnew said December to February was peak season for trail walkers, and she was assisting about half a dozen per week.

“Most of them are doing the whole trail or the whole South Island, depending on how much time they have got,” she said.

“They are really interesting people, you have to be a certain breed to want to go and walk 3000 kilometres.”

They mostly came from Europe and North America, and walked north to south, hitch-hiking into Methven from above Lake Coleridge. They generally stayed in the campground or backpacker lodges in Methven.

“It’s nice to have them here and they spread the word when they go back,” she said.

Walkers rejoin the trail on Blackford Road in the Rakaia Gorge, and Methven Travel provides transport on the “empty” section of its school bus run, and operates an on-demand shuttle service in school holidays.

The Te Araroa section through Mid Canterbury goes from here to the Hakatere Heron Road, taking a public access easement over Glenariffe Station, then crossing the 60,000-hectare Hakatere Conservation Park.

Among those undertaking Te Araroa is American Clayton Beckett. His trail name is Chef, he has a travel blog at chefspecial5.com and is from Connecticut.

The 26-year-old is walking the South Island section, south to north, and was in Methven at the weekend. He said he ended up staying two nights instead of one at Snow Denn Lodge because he needed the rest, and the fact it of-

“My feet were pretty banged up, so I decided to hang out for just one more day,” Beckett said.

He flew into Auckland in midDecember, and had his cellphone stolen in his first two days. He flew to Queenstown and shuttled to the southern end of Te Araroa at Bluff, and walked 555 kilometres north to Twizel over the next fortnight, staying in high country huts and his tent. With last week’s storm system forecast he decided to skip the next section and he

hitchhiked to Methven, and left at the weekend aiming to hitch to north of Lake Coleridge to resume the trail.

Beckett said the trail to date had had many river crossings, and some mountainous terrain, as well as farm tracks and dirt roads.

Besides the road walks, which he did not like as they lacked the wilderness appeal of true trail walking, and a lack of markers in some areas, he was enjoying the scenery and meeting lots of people.

Of the few fellow hikers he had met, most were walking north to

south. “A lot of Kiwis don’t even know about the trail,” Beckett said.

He was not worried about being without a cellphone.

“If you don’t have service it’s not going to help you and you are not going to get that in the mountains,” he said.

He was confident enough from previous trail walking in Chile and America not to worry about an emergency locator beacon.

In the 12 months to July last year, 550 people walked the full length from Cape Reinga to Bluff,

compared to 350 in 201 and 210 the year before.

One defeat doth not decide a World Cup D

on’t worry New Zealand, it’ll be all over soon.

I sat in a bar in Ashburton on Saturday night and watched the All Blacks cop a hiding from our canary yellow-wearing foes from across the Tasman and casually observed the genuine disbelief of other around me as they watched the match unfold.

This is not what we are used to.

This is not what we expect.

Australia have become our punching bag over the past decade such has been our dominance over them and here they are, handing some of the same corporal punishment back to us, and doing it in spades.

I’ve always been a big fan of Steve Hansen.

His approach and coaching style has always endeared himself.

He’s played his cards close to his chest, never really seemed to show too much emotion and hasn’t really been called on for the hard questions.

That is until now.

Hansen and his wise men will come under intense security in the coming weeks. Their motives and intentions questioned and

their abilities as coaches of our national rugby side will be debated by many.

That’s just the New Zealand psyche, especially when it comes to rugby.

Our expectations are that high that we demand and expect nothing more than perfection and when we don’t get it, we in turn then demand that heads roll because of it.

But should we be so intense on Hansen and co this close to the Rugby World Cup? History would suggest not.

It would also suggest that in a World Cup year, we’ve never been our best during the early stages of the season, the one and only focus is on that one tournament and lifting that small trophy at

the end of it. And we’ve done it well. Hansen will, despite what might happen in the coming months, be forever regarded as one of the great All Black coaches. He’s done the job and done it with his own style.

One World Cup failure, should it happen, should not define his time at the helm.

Sure, we’ve got some ageing players and that’s an excuse that’s been thrown around about in the past few weeks, but even the most defiant of supporters who are suggesting we have problems couldn’t argue with the fact that Kieran Read was one of the best players on the paddock on Saturday night.

I’m happy to say I’m not in panic mode yet. I’ve seen little

bits of what might be in store and there is enough promise in them to suggest that it might still be one that we can pull a rabbit out of the hat.

We’ve made it our modus operandi over the past few World Cup cycles and have unleashed it when the timing is just right.

And now, after watching his side self-implode and completely lose the plot on Saturday night, Hansen will be sitting back wondering and pondering whether this coming Saturday night, when they take on Australia again at Eden Park, whether or not it might be time to unleash the beast.

Now that would be a good decision from one of the greatest of all time.

Big warnings over trades training I

magine, for a moment, that you are the Minister of Education. Responsible for the learning of every child and student, from kindergarten and early childhood education, right through to universities and trades training.

You announce a bold proposal, to merge all 16 regional polytechnics into a single organisation, and get rid of industry training.

Almost instantly there’s a near-unanimous chorus from regional New Zealand, upset at the prospect of losing their local polytechnics.

That old rogue Tim Shadbolt, Mayor of Invercargill, launches a blistering attack, all but declaring independence from the rest of New Zealand.

The business case comes back from the Government’s own top education advisers.

It isn’t good. It suggests the model is doomed to fail, and won’t achieve any of the key

goals you’ve established.

Most of us at this point would realise the folly of the plan and file it carefully in one of the big green bins that inhabit Ministerial offices marked “rubbish”.

But not our current Education Minister, not Chris Hipkins.

Instead, he’s announced it’s to go ahead.

It’s an unfathomable decision, and one I’m sure he will live to regret.

For us locally it means we’ll be even further removed from decision making over the courses that are delivered here.

Centralising functions into

one head office will create a bureaucratic headache for parents, employers and potential students.

Since his decision was announced last week I’ve been going through the advice the Minister received from the Tertiary Education Commission.

It makes for extraordinary and depressing reading.

The risk assessment is the worst I’ve seen in more than a decade working in and around public policy.

The Government’s own advice is that it is likely the new model will not achieve the desired outcomes, and will cost more to deliver despite major redundancies in regional areas.

Worryingly, the business case indicates that the single nationwide polytechnic will fail on all three core metrics.

It projects that the needs of industry, employers and regional economies will almost certainly not be met, and that the impact

on all three will be extreme.

But here’s the real kicker.

Under the minister’s plan they forecast that in the short term in excess of 18,000 fewer people each year will become apprentices or undertake trades training.

In the medium term that number jumps to over 23,000 fewer apprentices and trainees each year.

In a time of low unemployment and severe shortages of tradespeople, particularly in regions like ours, it’s bizarre that the Government would give the green light to a plan that would see tens of thousands fewer trainees each year.

Normandy’s iconic sea fortress besieged by tourists

Mont Saint-Michel draws more than 3 million visitors a year

M

ont Saint-Michel on France’s Normandy coastline forms one of the country’s most recognisable and beautiful images – a walled Benedictine abbey and surrounding buildings literally rising from the sea and built in AD 966.

There’s no denying that Mont Saint-Michel is stunning from afar, especially if your timing allows you to see it both encircled by water and surrounded by mud flats that resemble quicksand.

But for much of the year, the site is an unbelievable mob scene; more than 3 million visitors annually trek through narrow alleyways that were meant to serve some contemplative monks and medieval visitors to the church honouring the Archangel Michael.

Pilgrims of the time called it “St. Michael in peril of the sea.”

Today, it’s more like St. Michael in peril of selfie-taking tourists.

The combination of ancient walls and surrounding sea makes crowd control difficult.

Visitors start in the vast inland parking area, and either hop on a free shuttle bus (after waiting in line), or brave the chilly Atlantic winds as they walk the two-mile paved footbridge out to the island, which affords long-dis-

tance vistas. Then, they wait a bit longer to get into the abbey and cloisters at the peak of the hill.

Pack a picnic, or shell out around $45 for La Mere Poulard’s famous omelette, which is more like a soufflé. (Or stand in the window and watch the cooks whip them up in copper bowls and pour them into pans, free.)

Peak periods to avoid include the summer, weekends, French school holidays and the St. Michel Bay marathon at the end of May.

In Saint-Malo, a fraction of the tourists and room to roam

For a more relaxing seaside refuge, head west to Brittany.

Beautiful Saint-Malo, about an hour by car from Mont SaintMichel, is an ancient walled citadel with wide ramparts perfect for strolling.

World War Two Allied bombing destroyed much of the original city, but Saint-Malo has done an impressive job of restoration.

Devote time to wandering the narrow, cobblestone streets or looking down into this elegant and beautiful city from the ramparts.

It never feels crowded: Saint-Malo and surrounding towns in Brittany host about 550,000 tourists a year, the Saint-Malo tourism office says.

For fans of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, All the Light We Cannot See, Saint-Malo is a

You can imagine how the blind Marie-Laure memorised the winding cobblestones streets “intra muros” – inside the walls.

Today, bikini-clad sunbathers lounge on the rocks just below those walls.

At Bon Secours beach, a natural pool with a couple of diving platforms beckons anyone brave enough to face the chilly English Channel water.

The streets are filled with historical sites, such as the birth-

places of the writer FrançoisRené de Chateaubriand, the founder of Romanticism, and of Canadian explorer Jacques Cartier. It’s also the city of corsairs, the privateers who would cache their treasures in the city’s deep cellars.

These days, Saint-Malo is a foodie town. Try out the Brittany specialities, such as galettes (savoury crepes); one nice spot just inside the Porte de Dinan is Le Mole.

For a top-notch dining experi-

ence go to Le Cambusier, named for the crew member on a boat in charge of food and drink.

A fish-intensive menu might include mackerel, cod or ceviche (about $47 for three courses; $36 for two courses).

And don’t forget to sample the local apple-based drinks: a brandy called calvados and a hard cider that is often served in a wide ceramic cup.

City roars into action AP Raheem Sterling scored a hattrick as Manchester City began their bid for a third straight Premier League title with a 5-0 rout at West Ham on Saturday.

Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring and substitute Sergio Aguero added a retaken penalty as City stretched its winning league run to 15 games including last season and delivered a statement to Liverpool, which opened its league campaign with a 4-1 victory over Norwich City on Friday night.

City, which racked up 98 points to beat Liverpool by a point last season, rarely looked like getting out of second gear with a measured performance at London’s Olympic Stadium.

“At times we were a bit sloppy in the first half, but once the sec-

ond goal went in I thought the boys were brilliant,” Sterling told BT Sport 1.

“It was quite difficult first half to get the cobwebs off, but once we got our rhythm the chances came.”

Riyad Mahrez, back in England after leading Algeria to the African Cup of Nations title, had the visitors’ first effort in the ninth minute, and should have done better again after cutting inside Aaron Cresswell before shooting right of the post.

Jesus broke the deadlock in the 25th minute, converting Kyle Walker’s cross from close range after Mahrez had played the England right-back in on the right.

West Ham rarely looked convincing.

City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko intervened when Manuel Lanzini was through at the other

end, before Ederson had little trouble gathering the ball from record signing Sebastien Haller’s attempted overhead kick.

It was only a matter of when City, with summer signing Rodri looking assured in midfield, would increase the tempo and make more of its superiority.

Kevin de Bruyne set up Sterling to score through Lukasz Fabianski’s legs in the 51st, minutes before Jesus had a wellworked team effort ruled out through VAR for offside. Sterling, played in by David Silva before he crossed for Jesus’ tap in, appeared to have his shoulder ahead of the defender.

Ederson was forced to make a double-save from Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, then Lanzini in West Ham’s best phase.

“They had an incredible

chance and it could go 1-2 with 15 minutes left.

“So you have to be strong, calm and positive.

“You have to control your emotions,” said City coach Pep Guardiola.

VAR was needed again when Sterling grabbed his second in the 75th, timing his run for Mahrez’s ball over the top before lifting it over Fabianski, but this time the goal was allowed.

Then Aguero was given a second chance to take his penalty after Fabianski saved his first effort. A VAR check showed Declan Rice was encroaching in the penalty area.

Aguero made it 4-0 in the 86th and Sterling wrapped it up in injury time, becoming the first since Didier Drogba in 2010-11 to start with a hat trick on the league’s opening weekend.

He cut his teeth on footy fields throughout the Bay of Plenty but Whakatane’s Jamie Searle is now playing on the hallowed turf of Villa Park in the United Kingdom.

Searle, 18, has just signed a oneyear contract with English professional football club Aston Villa after a successful trial that extended from an initial 10 days to four-anda-half weeks.

At almost two metres tall, its unsurprising Searle is a goalie.

According to former coach Sam Wilkinson from Melville United in Hamilton, having a “monster” frame certainly lends a hand to being a keeper but Searle, he said, has all the attributes required for the position.

“I’ve had Jamie in and around the club for the past two years after he followed his older brother Luke to Melville,” Wilkinson said.

“The more I watched him the more obvious his potential became.

“Jamie is quite raw as a keeper but has a great temperament, is humble, has an ability to listen and learn and his size helps.

“I had a feeling if we could get him over to England and in front of the right people, someone else would see the potential and be wondering what 12 months of professional coaching could do, and give him that initial chance.”

Wilkinson got in touch with a mate who serves as head of the goal keeping academy at Aston Villa and was able to secure Searle a 10-day trial.

“The fact that Jamie has a UK passport helped too.”

The trial was extended for an additional week once the 10 days were up, with Villa suggesting he stay for a little longer.

After four-and-a-half weeks he was offered a contract.

In a pre-season friendly game between Aston Villa and Tamworth, Searle managed to save two penalties. Villa won the game 4-1 and Searle had been subbed when the one goal against Villa was scored.

“We were watching the game back home and had to laugh at how Jamie had gone from a Melville United seconds game where you’d be lucky to have one man and his dog in support, to a Villa pre-season friendly in front of 2000 people.”

Wilkinson said it was up to Searle to succeed.

“He definitely has the ability.”

Heartbreak on the mats

The South Island indoor bowls side, which featured two Mid Canterbury names, came agonisingly close to ending a 12year drought on the weekend, but a late charge from their northern counterparts left them lamenting what might have been in Pukekohe.

The Kevin Eddy Memorial Trophy, which is played for each year, hasn’t been in the South Island’s hands since 2006 and on Saturday, it looked like they were finally going to get the trophy back across the Cook Strait.

After two massive rounds of play to start the day, the South Island side were in a commanding lead heading into the final round of matches, only to suffer a major blowout and win just one of the eight matches, with the North Island launching a stunning comeback from five matches behind to win 25-23.

The South Island side was this year managed by current

New Zealand representative and Ashburton player, Michael Lawson – who was a part of the winning team in 2006 for the South Island.

The side had been on a week-long tour of the upper North Island ahead of the test match and Lawson was joined on the bus by fellow Ashburton player, Mat Bassett.

Bassett, who was playing the role of lead in the men’s triples, endured a horror start to the day.

In their first round match, a 21-end battle, they were wiped off the mat by their North Island counterparts.

They did however manage to get things back on track in the middle round and deliver a telling victory to force the individual discipline medal to a decider.

The two sides fought out a close match with Bassett delivering some strong lead bowls, but the North Island side were too strong with their victory sealing the deal for the North Island.

Spinner doing the Lyon’s share for Australia

By Scyld Berry Nathan Lyon is one of several Australian cricketers who appear at the height of their game.

Aged 31 and on his third tour of England, Lyon contributed to Australia’s victory in the opening Ashes test at Edgbaston by out-bowling his counterpart Moeen Ali by nine wickets to three and routing England on the fifth day.

“Come on, Lyno” will be heard frequently over the stump mics in the next five weeks when Lyon comes on to bowl his off-spin.

It is likely to be up there as one of the defining sounds this month, along with “long tailbacks” and “delays inevitable” on the traffic news.

“Bowled, Nathe” will become another familiar sound when one of his off-breaks is pushed by an English bat to short leg; or else Jason Roy rushes past it.

“Nice, Garry!” will be audible, too, or “Nice one, Gazza” – an allusion to Garry Lyon, an Australian rules footballer turned radio show host.

Australia’s off-spinner is also called “Goat”, an acronym standing for the Greatest Of All Time.

Lyon has taken more than twice as many test wickets – 352 at an average of 31.82 – as the next Australian off-spinner, and more than any other Australian spinner apart from Shane Warne.

Australia’s previous head coach, Darren Lehmann, commentating on this test series for Macquarie Radio, goes so far as to say he “has been the difference between the teams so far”.

Not Steve Smith, nor Pat Cummins, two other Australians who are apparently at the height of their powers.

“He [Lyon] has just got better and better, and over the last 18 months, he’s been unbelievable.

“I’ve not seen another finger-spinner get so many revs on the ball,” said Lehmann, Australia coach from 2013 to 2018.

“Maybe Harbhajan Singh [of India] but not an orthodox off-spinner. At his best, Nathan is between 1800 and 2100.”

That is, he makes the ball rotate between 1800 and 2100 revolutions per minute.

The last Australia off-spinner to take 100 test wickets was Tim May in the 1990s.

“He had great revs, too, but was more injury-prone, whereas Lyon has got longevity,” he said.

Lehmann first saw him when he was playing Twenty20 cricket for South Australia and was struck at once.

“He looked as though he had the mental strength. He hasn’t really changed his action at all, just refined it, and got better and better.

“Yes, he’s been the difference between the sides so far.”

Lyon was born in Young in rural New South Wales. The family home had a driveway which sloped from one side to the other, and elder brother Brendan took one end to turn his leg-breaks down the slope.

Younger brother was forced to take the other and adjust to the conditions with off-breaks.

The Lyon brothers went first to Canberra, when the capital was developing a T20 team, the Canberra Comets.

In 2010, Nathan took a job as a groundsman or curator at Adelaide Oval and broke into South Australia’s team, although he has since moved back to New South Wales.

His first test ball in 2011 produced a wicket – the highly distinguished one of Kumar Sangakkara – and he was soon recognised as the long-sought successor to Warne, albeit not a wrist-spinner.

One of the few lean patches in

Lyon’s career was in county cricket with Worcestershire over four championship matches in 2017, but only one was at home. In the other three, the hosts saw him coming and did not prepare a spinning pitch.

Lyon, though, is remembered at Worcester for mentoring their younger spinners, not that there were many.

Pace bowlers have replaced pear orchards as Worcestershire’s main produce.

Lyon has the honour of leading the Australia team song when they celebrate a test victory.

As the holder of this office has to be in the team, it almost guarantees a place.

“Underneath the Southern Cross, I stand/ “A sprig of wattle in my hand/ “A native of our native land/ “Australia, you f—ing beauty!”

If England hear this song being chanted in the Lord’s pavilion at the end of the second test, and on one more occasion this northern summer, they will not regain the Ashes.

Lyon’s physique is whippy, rubbery, almost elastic, so he puts a lot of body into his bowling – his speed was around 100km/h at times at Edgbaston, Moeen’s well below – and he has long and strong fingers, remarkably uncalloused, which help him vary between off-spin and over-spin in all sorts of gradations.

Every offie loves a leftie, and especially Lyon in England, where half his 34 wickets have been left-handed batsmen, at only 19 each.

At times in their second innings at Edgbaston, England’s left-handers looked as though they were stabbing in the dark.

He is also Warne’s successor in winding up opponents.

After Joe Denly slog-swept him for two fours in an over at Edgbaston, Lyon during the next over went from cover to stand in the non-striker’s crease and speak to him.

It worked, because in Lyon’s next over, with a deep midwicket posted, Denly played straight and was caught by short-leg.

The subtlety of a spinner at his best, like Lyon is now, takes more than one form; and his right hand holds more than a sprig of wattle.

Loss ‘almost as good as a win’

They might have ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard, but Mid Canterbury were preferring to look at the positives following their second pre-season match of the year on Saturday in atrocious conditions.

The Hammers took on a strong Canterbury B side in front of a small crowd of faithful supporters who braved the elements and they were treated to a confronting game between two sides who threw everything at the 80 minutes.

It was Canterbury B who walked away the victors at the end of the

day, winning 14-7, but for Mid Canterbury coach Dale Palmer there was plenty to be happy with after the match, despite the defeat.

“We were really happy with the way the game went,” he said.

“The goal was to get out there on the paddock and put some of the things we’d been working on during the week into practice and I thought we managed to achieve quite a lot of them.

“They showed a lot of ticker, because it wasn’t an easy game to take on, that’s for sure.”

After winning against Ellesmere the week prior, the challenge laid down by the Mid Canterbury

coaching team was to improve from that match and produce some solid rugby as they build towards their first game in the Heartland Championship in a fortnight.

It was also a good opportunity to try combinations and allow some new players their chance to get the green and gold on their back and show them what they’re capable of.

“We managed to get everyone on the paddock for some game time and got a look at everyone which was what we wanted.

“I thought the forward pack in particular was very good, they came into their own in the con-

ditions and stuck to the core roles well.”

Palmer did give special mention to the effort of young first-five Inoke Tonga who, after a productive season for Rakaia, really stepped up on Saturday and delivered a strong performance.

“His all-round game was very strong, in particular I thought he kicked very well and showed some real improvement which was great.”

Mid Canterbury’s sole try for the match was scored by rampaging lock Manasa Bari following good work from a lineout.

Mid Canterbury will now turn their attention to their final

pre-season match against South Canterbury this weekend in Timaru and Palmer said it would be a final opportunity to lock eyes on everyone before the final squad including the loan and origin players are firmed up next week.

“We’ve still got a few things we want to see, it’s pretty likely there will be some new names in the mix from what we’ve seen already, but it’s all about getting the right mix and the right people in the right positions.”

Wallabies run riot

AP Australia took advantage of a 14man All Blacks side for the entire second half to beat New Zealand 47-26 in a Rugby Championship and Bledisloe Cup match before a sellout crowd of more than 61,200 on Saturday night.

All Blacks lock Scott Barrett was given a controversial red card in the 40th minute for a shoulder charge on Australia captain Michael Hooper.

James O’Connor, making his first test start in six years for Australia after a series of off-field indiscretions which saw him fall out of favour with selectors, played strongly at inside centre.

He set up the opening try to

It was the largest points total for Australia in a game against New Zealand.

The Wallabies will have a chance to clinch the Bledisloe Cup series next Saturday at Auckland’s Eden Park, where Australia has not won a match since 1986.

With the loss, the All Blacks could surrender their No 1. ranking to Wales for the first time since 2009 should the Welsh beat England later this weekend.

Fullback Kurtley Beale clinched the win with Australia’s sixth try in the 80th minute.

Hooper said the result was “a nice little hit for our confidence.”

“I’m very proud of the buildup, I thought we were quite disciplined, even when they were a man down,” he said.

“But the job is only half-done.”

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said he expects a better performance from his team next week.

“We were not defending well, but the simple fact is we only had 14 guys on the park,” Hansen said.

“As you know, a lot can change in seven days.”

Flyhalf Handre Pollard scored two tries and tallied 31 points as South Africa smashed Argentina 46-13 yesterday to win the Rugby Championship for the first time.

Pollard touched down in each half and booted five penalties and three conversions to drive home the overwhelming advantage the Springboks held over the Pumas at set pieces.

His second try came when the Springboks were down to 14 men, with scrumhalf Faf de Klerk in the sin-bin for joining a ruck from the side after the visitors conceded a series of goal-line penalties.

Argentina, who won the previous meeting between the teams, shocked South Africa with a try by Santiago Cordero after two minutes.

South Africa responded with Pollard’s first penalty and a try by hooker Bongi Mbonambi from a concerted lineout drive. The lead changed hands three times in an exchange of penalties between Pollard and Pumas flyhalf Nicolas Sanchez before the Springboks edged ahead.

Pollard’s first try, just after the halftime siren, gave his side a 2413 advantage at the break.

After Pollard scored his second try in the 53rd minute, outstanding handling and passing produced tries by wingers Makazole Mapimpi and Cheslin Kolbe.

Green lets fly at ref NZME

Chanel Harris-Tavita has impressed the Warriors coaching team with his recent performances.

Rookie the real deal NZME After the events of Friday night, there can’t be much more doubt about the trajectory of Warriors half Chanel Harris-Tavita.

There is a long, long way to go, but the Warriors rookie is the real deal.

His performance in the 24-16 upset of the Sea Eagles was top drawer, his second impressive display in the space of eight days for the Auckland club.

He was involved in most of the best offensive moments during the match, as well as making his mark on defence with a couple of stinging hits.

It’s the kind of performance you would expect from a hardened veteran, not a 20-year-old starting his seventh NRL match.

But that’s what sets Harris-Tavita apart, compared with the other young halves prospects at the Warriors over the last decade.

He doesn’t shrink from the

spotlight, isn’t overawed by the NRL and can find his best when it matters.

It hasn’t been a smooth road this season, but he has coped with every challenge.

After a long pre-season audition, he lost his battle with Adam Keighran for the halves spot alongside Blake Green.

It wasn’t easy to take, but the Pakuranga junior bided his time, and made a winning debut in round four.

An injury to Green meant Harris-Tavita had to then take the reins for the next three games, before Kodi Nikorima’s arrival in early May sent him back to reserve grade.

But Harris-Tavita didn’t sulk, and then impressed in cameo roles against the Broncos and Sharks, before a best on-field display in last week’s defeat to the Raiders.

Friday’s performance was the best yet, exhibiting sound deci-

sion making, clutch execution and presenting a strong physical presence.

A precise kick set up the Warriors’ first try, then slick hands sent Ken Maumalo across for his second.

His defensive intent also caught the eye.

He stopped second rower Curtis Sironen close to the line with a solid body shot, then later sent Tom Trbojevic flying as the Manly fullback eyed a gap in the defensive line.

“Twice [on Friday] he flew out of the line and made contact with big collisions,” said Green.

“Anyone who does that in your team encourages everyone else to get off the line and do the same thing, particularly when it’s from a young kid.”

Harris-Tavita was also happy to take the initiative, with more kicks and passes than veteran Green.

“One thing I’ve admired about

Chanel’s performances all year is that he hasn’t stayed back and waited for the dominant half, [Blake] Green, to call the shots or make plays,” said Kearney.

“He has stepped forward himself and to me that’s a real positive sign. [So] I didn’t hesitate in putting him in.

“Kodi [Nikorima] possibly could have played, but the way the kid has been going, it gave me confidence in making the decision early in the week, that he was going to get a run and I’d give Kodi another week.”

There may be more twists and turns for Harris-Tavita, as he could be back on the interchange next week, if Nikorima is cleared fit to play against the Roosters next Sunday and used in the halves.

That would be tough, but the level headed Harris-Tavita will accept it as part of his journey, where there is now no question about his final destination.

Warriors halfback Blake Green admits that frustration got the better of him late in the second half of their win over Manly on Friday night, causing an out of character outburst about the officiating.

They were in control at 18-0 with 15 minutes to play, before back rower Adam Blair was controversially sinbinned for a professional foul as Manly players chased an attacking grubber.

It was a dubious call – as Blair barely changed his running line but was deemed to have impeded Manase Fainu – and the bunker found a penalty, after numerous replays.

The on-field microphones picked up Green, obviously disappointed at the bunker’s call, say to referee Ben Cummins in exasperation: “All this bullshit they throw at us … [why not] just kick us out of the comp eh?”.

Green was apologetic after the game, admitting it was the culmination of weeks of frustration. “[It was the] heat of the battle,” Green said.

“We have copped a few of them this year, and I’ve been pretty quiet about it and I just wanted to let him know my thoughts.” “[It was a] bit of a pressure cooker, [we’ve] been under the pump, [we] copped a bit of a spray from everyone this week, we needed to respond. I just thought that was a big call in the game.”

Green made no excuses for his remark, but ultimately remained confused by the decision.

“I probably said a few things I shouldn’t have said to the referee,” Green said.

“But I didn’t even think it was going to be a penalty, I honestly didn’t.”

“In the context of the game it turned out to be a pretty important one. I haven’t had a chance to look at it again but on my first look it was touch and go. If that’s 30 metres up the field and someone kicks the ball they say play on.”

Coach Stephen Kearney was reluctant to discuss the officials yet again, but could empathise with his play maker after a series of bad calls stretching back weeks.

“I will have to talk to Blake about that one,” Kearney said.

“To be honest, it’s been unprecedented in terms of what they had to endure leading into last week’s game, post the Eels match, but I don’t want to say any more on that.”

On a specific level, Kearney was also bemused by the sinbinning decision.

“Off the back of the penalty count it was always going to be an issue but I didn’t think it was a penalty,” said Kearney.

“He turns around to chase a kick and someone runs into the back of him. They looked long and hard to try and find it … and they did.”

ability to last a tough slog in testing conditions over the 5600m journey.

Those doubts were smashed to pieces as rider Shaun Phelan called the tune throughout on his mount who had his eight rivals under heavy pressure as he upped the tempo with 1600m to run.

Despite getting tired in the final stages, It’s A Wonder never looked like being run down as he cruised over the line more than 20 lengths to the good of Gagarin, who chased bravely ahead of Mr Enthusiastic and Des De Jeu. A jubilant Phelan admitted that he was feeling lonely at times with such a large break on the field and resorted to singing his favourite tune to keep his

concentration up.

“I just thought I’d let him do what he does best which is to roll along,” Phelan said.

“She was lonely out there in front and I think I sang my favourite song, Blurred Lines, about three or four times.

“Coming to the last fence I was just praying it would come up right and it came up great.

“Harvey (Wilson) is one of the best jumps trainers but he’s never really had a good go at one of these big races. He’s found the right horse to do it today.

“He’s such a great conditioner of a horse, that’s why I rode him how I did as I knew he would be the fittest horse in the race.”

Wilson, who was struggling to keep his emotions in check as he

took in congratulations on the victory, admitted he was hoping for a postponement of the day’s racing due to the heavy rain that had seen the going downgraded to a very deep and testing Heavy11.

“We were actually hoping they might put the races off as we weren’t confident at all with this rain,” he said.

“Shaun was fantastic, he (It’s A Wonder) jumped fantastic, what a thrill.

“This is as good it gets.”

It’s A Wonder took his career record to eight wins from 49 starts for the Wilson family who narrowly missed a notable double after Bad Boy Brown was narrowly beaten in Wednesday’s Grand National Hurdles (4200m).

It was a damp but great day for Mid Canterbury hockey teams who have both qualified for the respective finals.

MC teams finals-bound The weather conditions might have been a long way away from being perfect, but there was still plenty of reasons for slightly dampened smile for Mid Canterbury’s two senior hockey sides on Saturday as they booked spots in their respective finals.

Playing on the Ashburton Turf, the Hampstead women’s team

squared off with their old foe of the season, Cambridge, in a match which promised to be a thriller.

The two sides finished at the top of the points table in normal season, sharing a slice of the silverware, but there was still plenty to play for on the weekend with a direct path to the finals in two

weeks on the cards for the match winner.

The three matches prior to Saturday had proven to be three enthralling encounters, with Cambridge winning early in the season, 3-1 before a 2-all draw and then a win to Hampstead a few weeks back to leave the ledger at even.

But it fell firmly to the side of Hampstead on Saturday when they beat Cambridge, 3-2 to gain that direct path to the final – and do so as top qualifier.

Then, just a matter of hours following the Hampstead girls’ success, Mid Canterbury’s men’s side – Wakanui, repeated the effort for Mid Canterbury by win-

ning their major semi-final down in Timaru.

The Wakanui team were taking on the talented Northern Hearts side, but managed to produce a stunning 4-3 victory in what was a brilliant match of hockey to gain a straight advancement to the final, to be played in two weeks time.
