Three Greenpeace activists, including one from Ashburton, are among the first people ever to be charged under a new amendment for protesting at sea. Head of Greenpeace New Zealand, Russel Norman, along with Ashburton kitemaker Gavin Mulvay and Sara Howell from Wales, have been charged under the Crown Minerals Act. The charges follow the trio jumping into the ocean 50 nautical miles off the Wairarapa coast and swimming in front of the oil exploration vessel the Amazon
Warrior on Monday. The ship had to divert its course as a result. “I think the government is doing the wrong thing by using the full force of the law to protect the oil industry, when really what we need to do is transition away from oil if we are going to have a stable climate,” Norman told the Guardian yesterday. Greenpeace is concerned about the climate change repercussions of using oil, and also the effects of seismic blasting from the ship being harmful to marine mammals. Norman and fellow protesters were
on the Taitu, a 15-metre boat which Greenpeace crowdfunded almost $100,000 in seven days to buy. Yesterday it was docked at Napier. Greenpeace said the trio were the first people ever to be charged under the Anadarko Amendment which was created specifically to stifle protest at sea. The charges were laid by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. The oil exploration was being carried out for Arctic driller Statoil and Chevron, a US oil company.
