More than 100 jobs will be created in the Ashburton District when a new water bottling plant is established at the Ashburton Business Estate. New Zealand-based company NZ Pure Blue Ltd is in negotiations with the Ashburton District Council to buy Lot 9 at the business park. The 10-hectare site comes complete with a water consent to take up to 45 litres per second. Managing director Roydon Hartnett said he decided to go public with his purchase plans to dispel rumours that negotiations were with an off-shore company and that water would be leaving New Zealand in giant rubber bladders. “If we get through due diligence, we will be building a bottling plant and

there will be substantial employment for the district. We won’t be putting water into bladders; we will be making bottles on site,” he said. A former Ashburtonian, Mr Hartnett said that the business estate was the perfect location for the new plant because it had good access to rail. “This was the only site we could find in the South Island where all of the things we needed lined up. Our plan doesn’t include using road. We plan to ship out by rail, that was key for us because we didn’t want to add to the road transport problem,” he said. Part of his company’s ethos was to give back to the community and with the new plant, Mr Hartnett said he was trying to put something in place that would be good for the community across several levels.
With roots stretching back to 1875, Heartland has a proud history of supporting small-to-medium sized businesses, farms and families in Canterbury. It’s great to offer the people of Ashburton a local banking option that is 100% for New Zealand.
“We are a New Zealand company, we’re registered here and we pay New Zealand taxes.” While the council had been criticised for selling land that included a water consent, without that consent the site would be worthless, he said. Once the due diligence stage had been completed and the deal signed, Mr Hartnett said he would unveil the company’s business plan. “But this will be large and it will be good for the community,” he said. NZ Pure Blue Ltd was incorporated in July last year and has two directors, Mr Hartnett and John Paynter.
