The Government’s $6 million boost for mental health will help fund a health improvement practitioner (HIP) in Mid Canterbury.

The role is based at Ashburton’s Three Rivers Health as part of a pilot programme and has been previously self-funded.

Funding for the role will be given to Waitaha Primary Health (formerly Canterbury Rural PHO), which provides and supports Mid Canterbury’s GPs and health services.

“Although we don’t yet know how much funding we will receive, it will be used to help offset the establishment

costs of the HIP role and provide secure funding for its future,” said Paul Wynands, manager of Waitaha Primary Health’s mental health services.

Patients are referred directly to the HIP from their doctor if they are experiencing mild to moderate mental health issues. Following an assessment, behavioural goals are developed with the patient, to be worked on outside the clinic.

Generally, a patient will only require one or two 30-minute appointments and those deemed to be at risk are referred to secondary care. Appointments can also be done over the phone and

the service is free-of-charge to patients.

“The benefit of having a HIP based at a practice means the patient can receive a much faster mental health response, particularly if they need to be referred to other services,” said Bill Eschenbach, Waitaha Primary Health’s Chief Executive. “The role also helps to build capacity in the General Practice through education and identifying and responding to the health needs of the practice’s population.”

Kmart build ‘will fragment town’

Constructing a large format retail store next to Countdown Ashburton South will fragment the town, say a group of Ashburton residents.

Paul and Kate Winter, Paul and Rebekah Smith and Matt Winter and Kellie Wilson have opposed a resource consent application pertaining to the southern Ashburton site, where Kmart is rumoured to be coming to town.

“The proposal will create an additional shopping area near but not a part of Ashburton town centre, further fragmenting the way in which locals shop,” the residents said in their written submission to the Ashburton District Council.

“People walking along streets revitalises town centres, not queues of traffic lined up and down the road. Council wants to revitalise the town centre, and this shop will go against the grain of what they are trying to achieve.”

The group of residents did however support the large format retail store coming to Ashburton, but said it should instead be located in the town centre area, or the wider Business B area thereby tying in with the District Plan.

Their submission was one of three received by the Ashburton District Council by the deadline of Thursday last week. One of the others, by Countdown operator

Woolworths, supported the application subject to agreement on a range of matters.

The application has been made

by River Crossing Limited, to demolish the existing buildings and level the site, with a street address of 5 to 7 Cass Street and 36 to 50 South Street, and construct two commercial buildings.

The large format retail store is proposing to trade 8am to midnight seven days per week, from its premises measuring 5175 square metres, with proposed product lines including homewares, clothing, toys, confectionery and food items, sports equipment and a range of gift and entertainment goods.

In Woolworths’ submission, property manager Victoria Knobloch said measures would need to be taken by the applicant, including demonstrating that the new operations would not adversely affect the safety and operation of the Countdown site nor its serving road network.

“The mitigation currently proposed by the applicant is not sufficient to confirm avoidance, remediation or mitigation of those potential effects.”

Meanwhile, the remaining submitter, resident Mike Farrell, supported the application being granted with alteration to traffic management, due to potential congestion issues, these already having been a concern since the opening of the Countdown store.

The Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club will officially open its Ashburton clubrooms next month after years of planning and plenty of blood, sweat and tears.

The club’s huge display and storage shed is located at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds and was temporarily open for visitors at last year’s Ashburton A&P Show. Since then, it has been finished internally and already hired out for a few agricultural-related occasions.

It was used by Euro-Agri for its recent 10-year business celebrations and has also been used for other social functions. It has a small kitchen and a large open space.

The club will be preparing a special array of vintage tractors and machinery for this year’s Ashburton show, which has the theme Seeds of Canterbury.

The venue and outside grounds were ideal, and allowed the young technicians to learn about machinery from the past and how it had shaped their industry, he said.

No need for Te Reo to be compulsory

Children should be encouraged to learn Te Reo, but not forced to, says a Whanau Hui member at Netherby School.

Roz Cuter said while her grandparents spoke the Maori language fluently as she grew up in the North Island, that ability had been lost down the generations.

By the time Cuter got to secondary school however, she decided to take lessons in the language of her ancestors, and today can speak conversational Te Reo. She said the accessibility of Te Reo had been the saving grace she required to bring the treasured language back into her life, and she wanted to maintain this accessibility for all students for generations to come.

However, she disagreed with the New Zealand Green Party in its calls for lessons to be compulsory.

“I think when you are forced it puts you off, and you don’t enjoy it,” Cuter said.

Cuter was enjoying celebrating the language and culture at Netherby School during Maori Language Week this week.

“It’s quite an interesting culture and it makes us as Kiwis who we are,” Cuter said.

“I think it’s amazing how the teachers here try and incorporate it, not just in Maori Language Week but throughout the whole year. It’s just little things, but they actually mean a lot those little things,” she said.

Cuter is a teacher aide at Netherby. She also has two children at the school and is a member of the school’s Whanau Hui, which is a group of parents of Maori pupils who meet with the principal and other personnel each term, to advise on traditions and protocols.

The wealth of activities at the school included a thriving kapa haka group, flax weaving, and learning karakia and waiata.

This term students are learning rakau sticks, and will perform these to songs including Tutira Mai at a cultural assembly on Friday.

Principal Phil Wheeler said Maori Language Week gave an opportunity to celebrate a culture the school focused on yearround, something which was particularly important with onethird of the school’s roll of 158 identifying as Maori.

“We put an emphasis on it in Maori Language Week, because it’s special to our school and Aotearoa New Zealand,” Wheeler said.

She said early intervention and easy access to support was vital,

as suicide deaths in the Canterbury District Health Board area, which includes Ashburton, were the highest of all DHBs. Between July 2007 and June 2018, some 765 suicide deaths recorded by the Canterbury DHB, she said.

Preparing for MSA demolition

The pages have turned on a chapter of history at the Ashburton Club and MSA. Builders are this week prepping the Burnett Street frontage for demolition, and while the MSA Restaurant will be re-opened in the rebuilt structure next year, as will a more spacious billiards room, the MSA Library will not be making a comeback.

Spokesperson Simon McDonnell said the MSA goes back to 1885, and the library had been there for much of that time.

“In the 1800s, reading was a big thing without TV and computers,” McDonnell said.

It was sad to no longer have the library, as it had been one of the features that made the club a club. It was a “stand-alone point” that one would never see in a hotel or tavern.

However, the rebuild spelled the end of the bibliophiles’ quarters, as managers were forced to face the fact usage was steadily declining.

“The younger brigade are just not interested in it, older ones still supported it, but their numbers were dwindling too,” McDonnell said.

The library opened two days per week and following its last day of operation three weeks ago, its approximate 1500 books were sold or given to rest-homes, the Plains Museum and Bookarama.

The curtains have closed on a chapter at the Ashburton Club and MSA, as builders undertake preparations prior to demolition.

Feedback to be delivered on tough new water rules The head of the water directorate for the Ministry for the Environment, Martin Workman, will be among those in Ashburton today for the primary sector meeting about tough new freshwater rules that will affect farming.

He is expected to be joined by several others for “a fairly short address followed by discussion”, a ministry staffer said yesterday.

The meeting in the Hotel Ashburton starts at 10am and farmers have been encouraged to attend.

The Mid Canterbury farming community is feeling nervous

and vulnerable about the proposed new rules, and what some say are unachievable water quality targets.

Eiffelton farmer Ian Mackenzie, who is seeking a seat on Environment Canterbury in the coming local body elections, said the blanket rules proposed had unintended consequences.

One that set the rate of dissolved nitrogen in waterways six times lower than the drinking water standard could only be achieved by depopulating the plains “and turning off the lights in Ashburton”, he said.

The alternative was to spend the next decade arguing over exemptions.

Mackenzie said rather than blanket rules, rules appropriate for communities and individual waterways were needed – as already happens with ECan and the Ashburton Water Zone Committee.

“So what they are proposing is pretty serious.”

Two hours have been set down for the Ashburton meeting.

Environment Minister David Parker said public meetings around the country were a chance

for people to have their say on the biggest programme of action to protect the environment since the introduction of the Resource Management Act in 1991.

“We are delivering on our promise at the last election. The state of our rivers, lakes and wetlands are a top concern for New Zealanders. They want us to take action to stop the degradation and restore the health of our waterways.

“We need to start now. If we don’t, it will take longer, cost more and be harder to fix,” Parker said.

It’s the job of the Council to make decisions on behalf of our community that will make Ashburton a better place to live, work and play.

In the last three years we’ve seen decisions that have gone against the strong wishes of the community, like the permanent closure of the Ashburton i-Site Centre.

The plan to move the water feature from East Street, initially voted for by a majority of Council, was never feasible. Those involved in the original design and construction agreed it would cost far more than the Council estimated. That poor decision took weeks to unwind.

Every day that Council spends wasting time on nonsense is a day they’re not discussing the big challenges and opportunities our district faces.

He said because the freshwater proposals released last week had the potential to have a significant impact in some areas, an independent advisory panel had been appointed to consider submissions on the topic.

The panel is chaired by retired Principal Environment Court Judge David Sheppard. The other members are hydrology scientist Andrew Fenemor, resource management expert Antoine Coffin, dairy farmer Tracy Brown and lawyer Maree Baker-Galloway.

Submissions on the freshwater proposals close on October 17.

When a stunt gets serious

A failure to withdraw from the local body nominations last month has put Seven Sharp reporter Julian Lee in a somewhat “sticky situation” come October 12.

In what has now been revealed as a publicity stunt to demonstrate to the general public how simple it was to be nominated and stand for local office, Lee put his name forward as a candidate for the Mackenzie District mayoralty.

His nomination was actioned by the Fairlie Bakehouse owner Franz Lieber and an unsuspecting Bakehouse employee, and before he knew it, Lee’s name was on the form before the incumbent mayor himself, Graham Smith.

Through a statement, approved by TVNZ’s corporate division, Lee confirmed he was not seriously running for mayor and had no intention to accept the position, if elected.

“I love my role at Seven Sharp and would not take the mayoralty if I happened to win the vote,” Lee said.

“It (my nomination) was all a bit tongue in cheek, what I was trying to demonstrate was how many vacant council and community board positions there are nationwide and how

easy it is to throw your hat in the ring.”

However, for whatever reason, Lee and the team at Seven Sharp were unable to withdraw his nomination before the cutoff deadline at noon on August 18 – meaning Lee remains a genuine candidate available for election next month.

Anthony Morton said Lee, who clearly has no intention of wanting to accept the position, if elected, will have to resign immediately, triggering a by-election.

“These things can be costly, depending on the number of names put forward in a by-election, but overall successful candidates aren’t forced

to accept their new standing if elected,” Morton said.

“As it stands though, Julian Lee is an eligible candidate for the position of Mackenzie Mayor, and voters will have the choice between Julian or the incumbent Graham Smith.”

Though, take it from Julian himself – a vote for Lee is most definitely a vote wasted.

Ashburton – where difference is celebrated When lunchtime rolls around in Ashburton, there’s a beeline of locals and passing traffic to one of their favourite sandwich joints.

And while there’s much to be celebrated in the fresh mix of ingredients filling their lunch of choice at Subway Ashburton, the diversity of the people making the sandwiches is a point of interest that’s been explored in the first of a series of videos.

programme being piloted in the Ashburton District is making the rounds of local workplaces to shine a light on businesses who have been creating welcoming and diverse workplaces where difference is celebrated. ​​Tony Corbett of Subway Ashburton says at his business, he works hard to treat everyone the same and involve everyone at all levels.

“We often call it the United Nations. When you look along

the line, there’s a real mix of all ethnicities. It’s really good – it’s a good work environment.”

Where staff struggle to confidently use English when interacting with the public, he says the team work to help incorporate non-verbal tools to indicate which salads or other food items the customer wants.

In time, their English skills increase.

“Ninety per cent of customers are understanding,” he adds.

Although they are a sevenday-a-week business, Corbett would like to incorporate more social functions such as barbecues and picnics with staff to help involve everyone and where they are able to bring their families along.

The short video series is produced by the Ashburton District Council, and features Tony McNeill from Immigration NZ speaking with ‘champions’ of welcoming workplaces.

Farmers and growers have taken up the opportunity to dispose of farm waste in a sustainable manner at a recycling and recovery event in Southbridge on Monday.

There were 61 people that handed in over 3000 litres of old chemicals and oils, two full trucks of polypropylene and silage and baleage wrap, and about 1000 kilograms of chemical containers.

One of the those to utilise the service was Ellesmere farmer Bill Irvine, who brought in 200 chemical containers which were shredded into 240kg of shredded plastic that will make 200kg of cable cover – all brought in the back of his Toyota Hilux.

The Ministry for the Environment is funding the Agrecovery programme to deliver six pilot rural waste management one-stop-shop events in September.

The events will enable farmers and growers to drop off chemical waste and plastics at one of the depots for safe disposal.

At the scheduled Selwyn event, held at the Cemetery Pit on Leeston Southbridge Road, farmers and growers were able to drop-off chemical containers, silage and bale wrap, fertiliser and feedbags, waste oil and unwanted chemicals for safe disposal and in some cases recycling.

Agrecovery held two similar trial events in 2018 in Geraldine and Matamata and collected nearly 20 tonnes of rural waste.

The success of these events prompted the expansion of the pilot into four new areas with the assistance of ministry funding.

The Agrecovery Foundation started in 2007, with a product stewardship programme designed to help clear plastic agrichemical containers and drums from farms and orchards around the country.

The agrichemical industry funds the programme and recycles waste.

The programme also sustainably disposes of unwanted agrichemicals.

Pop-up events are held throughout the country and waste can also be dropped at fixed collection sites.

Applications open for scholarship Applications open today for this year’s $1500 Andrew Falloon MP STEM scholarship. Last year’s recipient was Ashburton College student Diana Barbu (right).

It is for students who have attended secondary school in the Rangitata electorate, and are interested in taking on a STEM subject at tertiary level, that is science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

“By itself my scholarship won’t solve the problem of skills shortages, but I hope that it will encourage more people to look at training in the areas we need to keep our economy moving,” Falloon said.

“Nearly every day I hear from employers the difficulty in finding locals with specialised training in STEM subjects.”

Falloon had sold almost $900 worth of raffle tickets at local A&P shows, and topped up the remainder of the scholarship himself.

Fellow judges will be Nigel Davenport from Aoraki Development, and Bevan Rickerby, the economic development manager at the Ashburton District Council.

Govt targets suicide rates

NZME The Government has announced it will set up an office dedicated to reducing suicide rates as it tries to tackle worsening statistics.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Health Minister David Clark yesterday launched the Government’s long-awaited plan for suicide prevention.

Suicide rates in New Zealand reached their highest levels since records began in the year to June, with deaths among youth, Maori and Pacific Island people rising sharply.

As part of its plan, the Government has unveiled it will set up a Suicide Prevention Office – one of the recommendations from a sweeping inquiry into the state of the country’s mental health services.

The office will co-ordinate work between different government bodies to try to reduce suicide rates as well as monitoring the Government’s progress in the area.

It will initially be run out of the Ministry of Health before becoming a separate body run by a new Director of Suicide Prevention. That appointment is expected to be made shortly.

Bridges slams Ardern The Prime Minister is too focused on Twitter and Facebook and not on the issues that matter to everyday New Zealanders, National leader Simon Bridges says. And he adds that the Christchurch Call, an agreement signed by 17 countries and eight online platforms including Twitter and Facebook to tackle online terrorist content and violent extremism, is a talkfest that has achieved nothing. But Jacinda Ardern has hit back, saying about 10,000 New Zealanders contacted a mental health hotline after the March 15 shootings, and she felt a responsibility to do something on behalf of New Zealand. Bridges’ comments come a day after Ardern met Twitter boss Jack Dorsey at the Beehive, where they discussed progress on the Christchurch Call ahead of an announcement during the UN general assembly in New York later this month.

Health Minister David Clark and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern yesterday announced it will set up an office dedicated to reducing suicide rates as it tries to tackle worsening statistics.

The Every Life Matters plan replaces a previous government suicide prevention strategy that was in place until 2016 and aims to provide an overarching strategy for how to tackle the problem Major updates include: ■■ Undertaking more research to get better data

the actions the Government has already in place are an important start,” Arden said.

The Government included $1.9 billion of new funding for mental health over four years, including $40 million specifically put aside for suicide prevention in its May Budget.

Bodies heading Boatie ‘suffered medical event’ back to China NZME

NZME Arrangements are under way to transport the bodies of the five tourists killed in last week’s fatal bus crash near Rotorua back to China.

Five people died and two people were seriously hurt when the tourist bus they were in rolled in bad weather on State Highway 5 at Ngatira.

Twenty-seven people were on the bus at the time of the crash.

Police said yesterday that investigations into the crash were continuing.

The next of kin of the five passengers killed had been notified and arrangements were under way to transport their bodies to families back in China, police said.

Police are keen to hear from three possible witnesses to the crash.

“One is the driver of a white car described as being close to the scene as the crash occurred.

“Police are also keen to speak with a truck driver wearing a hi-vis jacket who radioed his base for assistance and directed traffic prior to police arriving at the scene. Finally, we would like to speak to the driver of another car that was directly behind the first car on the crash scene,” police said yesterday.

Police believe the bus was travelling south towards Rotorua and failed to take a moderate bend.

As a result it went to the wrong side of the road, corrected and subsequently flipped.

Bishnal Basnet, who was travelling with his brother and uncle from Te Puke to Hamilton, was among the first people on the scene.

The crash site, he told the Herald last week, was chaos with people screaming and crying and trying to get off the bus in heavy rain.

He carried an Asian woman in her 50s on his back away from the bus before emergency services arrived 10 or 15 minutes later.

He stayed at the crash site directing traffic for about an hour.

A Southland man suffered a medical event while driving a jet boat, losing consciousness before being helped ashore where he would eventually die.

Jet boating NZ immediate past president Paul Mullan said Peter McKenzie was driving the vessel about 1km west of the Wairaurahiti River mouth when he appeared to suffer a medical event, making the boat lose power as his foot came off the accelerator.

The boat eventually came to a standstill and was overcome by a couple of rogue waves, with the three people onboard trying to stay on as long as possible. “[The boat] has dropped out from under them.”

McKenzie then regained consciousness and he and another man were helped to shore by the third, younger, passenger.

rugged terrain on his way to Waitutu Lodge.

The remote lodge had no cellphone reception and the man had to radio for help.

Emergency services arrived about four hours later.

As the man ran for help, the two remaining men, including McKenzie, were whipped by strong winds up to 20 knots and pelted with rain.

Mullan said it’s not known what type of medical event McKenzie suffered, and that would be determined by the coroner.

“He was part of the association and obviously he’s sadly missed,” Mullan said.

“Mackcraft are prolific boat builders for jet boats and he’s a very, very experienced jetboater. It’s just really sad.”

It’s the second tragic death for his family after McKenzie’s brother Morrell died in 2015 when his truck went off the wharf at South Port.

Maritime NZ said it was liaising with police.

Owners of the home on Third Ave in Kingsland begun work late last month, telling neighbours they were doing “a small renovation” – but after trucks arrived, and diggers began doing major earthworks, questions started to arise. Images of the property show work to the lower level of a two-storey house. Three props held up the upper level, while earthworks had begun on a new foundation. The property owners said they didn’t realise work was “going to be that huge”.

A waste of time publicity stunt C

onsidering some of the shortcomings discovered in the nomination process for this year’s local government elections here locally, it’s even more mind-boggling to read of Seven Sharp reporter Julian Lee’s fruitless campaign for the mayoral spot in the Mackenzie District.

Fruitless in the fact, that Lee – who has admitted to his nomination being nothing more than a publicity stunt to prove just how easy it is to gain a nomination and join the race for the top job in a district – has no intention of fulfilling the role on the off-chance that he is elected.

It’s almost a case of why would you even bother?

With no intention to do anything other than boost one’s

own profile, clearly because they felt they hadn’t gained enough traction in their working life and were feeling a little put out, this complete waste of time of an idea was created.

And what about the worst case scenario?

What happens if Lee gets the votes?

Highly unlikely, I know, but stranger things have happened.

Lee confirmed yesterday that,

should he be successful, he’d automatically resign from the role and thus a by-election would be required.

As we’ve found out, here in our district, they don’t come cheap for just a community board – so what about a mayoral race?

It’s a little bit frustrating to witness to be fair, especially with what unfolded here in the Ashburton District a few weeks ago.

We don’t want to go over old ground here, but, we’ve got a prominent, existing councillor who is faced with no immediate political future due to a simple mistake by a number of parties and then, just down the road, someone who is standing, but has no intention of actually taking the role, if elected.

Doesn’t really seem right does it?

If nothing else, the lead-up nationally to this year’s elections has highlighted some serious issues with the nomination processes.

Whether it be a personnel issue, or the murky surrounds of the legalities and requirements which envelop the process around becoming a candidate, changes need to be made for future elections, because the people of New Zealand deserve better than the rigmarole that’s been 2019.

The unfortunate situation locally around Russell Ellis is, and was, easily avoidable and had his case been an isolated one, then it might have been a little easier to understand.

But there were a number of is-

sues here locally around incorrect nominations and around the rest of the country there have been similar stories emerging.

If this doesn’t kick those in control right into gear to get things better for the next time elections roll around then we’ve got serious problems.

What is required is clear and definitive boundary lines which determine exactly which ward a nominator sits on. What is currently provided is a disgrace and offers no clear-cut boundary lines, but instead resembles more a squiggle on a poorly detailed map.

Time to get it sorted and time to get it right.

The community are the ones who are missing out.

Celebration marches as Te Reo Maori unifies

I

t is a beautiful irony that a language some said would divide us, is bringing so many of us together.

At last count more than 20,000 people were preparing to march with us in celebration of the Maori language in parades taking place in seven cities across Aotearoa.

Maori language is being celebrated everywhere from our classrooms to our workplaces, on the trains we ride to work, and the computer games our children play, to the newspapers we read: what began as a protest movement is turning into a unique celebration of our national identity.

But it wasn’t always that way.

Te reo Maori became an official language in its own country, only after years of protest and a claim laid with the Waitangi Tribunal by language champion, Dr Huirangi Waikerepuru.

The tribunal found that te reo is a taonga the Government was obliged to protect under the Treaty of Waitangi.

We have gone from protest march to parade in a generation – and we can thank everyday people for making te reo something that more and more of us identify as part of our national heritage and identity.

This week, representatives from Microsoft were at Te Taura Whiri i Te Reo Maori showing us an incredible Maori Minecraft world: Nga Motu. Players can build and paddle a waka ama, construct a wharenui, chase flocks of moa about or hunt tuna (eel).

This kind of project, in collaboration with Maori designers, is a game-changer that changes the way our youngsters think about their identity and the future.

What our children see on the screens they watch teaches them how their world works and what their place is in that world: this week our tamariki will see themselves reflected in Minecraft and they look ataahua.

As we look ahead to the future: children who can speak many languages, including their

own, should be our shared goal.

The Maori language and culture brings us together, in celebration and also in mourning. In the aftermath of the Christchurch massacre tragedy on March 15, the BBC reported with surprise at how haka were being performed across the country to honour the dead.

Months later when a young Muslim New Zealander stood to speak at the UNHCR in Geneva, he began his speech in te reo Maori. He said he did so to honour the dead and to honour the living, the future.

More people from all walks of life are increasingly holding on to te reo and tikanga Maori as part of their identity as New Zealanders.

Our ancestors’ goals as they explored and settled the greatest ocean on earth were bold and audacious: and so are ours.

And like them, we are unapologetic.

We want to see te reo everywhere, every way, for everyone, every day: Kia mahorahora te reo.

The Maori Language Com-

mission’s Maihi Karauna strategy aims to see one million New Zealanders speaking Maori by 2040, 85 per cent valuing te reo as a key element of national identity and 150,000 Maori New Zealanders aged 15 and over speaking te reo as much as English.

Attitudes have changed so much in a generation, and we suspect we have more champions than critics: particularly amongst our younger generation. New Zealand is the turangawaewae of te reo Maori.

Scary satellite image of fires NZME If you want to get an idea of just how ferocious the bushfires are in Queensland and New South Wales, look down from the sky.

Satellite imagery, aired by Channel 9, has shown the blaze’s impact near Angourie in northern NSW. The fire can be seen creeping across the peninsula devastating everything in its path.

More than 80 fires are now raging, 17 homes have been lost and a further 67 damaged.

Police are looking into whether arson may be behind ferocious blazes that have rocked the Sunshine Coast with three children under investigation.

Queensland’s top cop said there has been “reckless and purposeful behaviour” in the vicinity of the bushfires.

Eight fires are being investigated for possible human involvement.

Acting Queensland premier Jackie Trad said it was “nothing short of a miracle” more homes have not been lost.

The fire affecting Peregian Beach and Peregian Breeze Estate, south of Noosa, is burning north, towards Marcus Beach.

It is not considered to be under control and the situation remains extremely volatile.

A ‘leave now’ order is current for residents of Peregian Beach, Peregian Breeze Estate and Marcus Beach.

The other major fire of concern on Tuesday is the one that’s destroyed at least eight homes and the heritage listed lodge in the Gold Coast hinterland.

Trad said the fact no one had died, no one was missing and damage was limited was an extraordinary outcome.

“Last night’s herculean efforts resulted in nothing short of a miracle,” she told reporters yesterday.

In Northern NSW, strong winds could push a fire close to Shark Creek and Angourie, east of Grafton, towards homes.

There are also blazes at Bees Nest near Armidale and Drake near Tenterfield.

The Shark Creek blaze has

destroyed at least nine homes and 34 outbuildings.

Firefighters spent Monday night trying to protect property but have been unable to bring the fires under control.

“Just trying to get containment on these fires is a nightmare,” NSW Rural Fire Service deputy commissioner Rob Rogers said.

A bushfire emergency situation has been officially declared in Queensland’s southeast, with at least 10 homes in the Peregian Beach area already lost. That number is expected to rise.

There are now 82 blazes burning across Queensland, with fire now moving fast in a north-northeast direction from Emu Mountain Road towards Peregian Beach and Peregian Breeze Estate.

Noosa local disaster co-ordinator Carl Billingham said the Sunshine Coast blaze remained out of control.

“We’ve got about 250 to 300 people in our three evacuations centres, I believe we’ve got three fire waterbombing helicopters coming in to try and douse the fire where possible and we’ve got over 70 tenders in attendance of the fire,” he said.

North Korea launches more projectiles AP North Korea launched two projectiles toward the sea yesterday, South Korea’s military said, hours after the North offered to resume nuclear diplomacy with the United States but warned its dealings with Washington may end without new US proposals.

The launches and demand for new proposals were apparently aimed at pressuring the United States to make concessions when the North Korea-US talks restart. North Korea is widely believed to want the United States to provide security guarantees and extensive relief from US-led sanctions in return for limited denuclearisation steps.

The North Korean projectiles fired from its South Phyongan province, which surrounds its capital city of Pyongyang, flew about 330 kilometres across the country and in the direction of the waters off its east coast, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff and Defence Ministry.

tinuing short-range launches by the North.

Japan’s defence ministry said the projectiles did not land in Japan’s territorial waters or its exclusive economic zone and there was no indication the launches posed a direct threat to Japan’s security.

In the late-night statement carried by state media, Choe said North Korea is willing to sit down with the United States “for comprehensive discussions in late September of the issues we have so far taken up, at a time and place to be agreed”.

Choe said she hopes the United States will bring “a proposal geared to the interests of the DPRK and the US and based on decision methods acceptable to us”. DPRK stands for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the North’s official name.

She warned that “if the US side fingers again the worn-out scenario which has nothing to do with new decision methods at the DPRK-US working negotiation to be held with so much effort, the DPRK-US dealings may come to an end”.

“We want to help as many as possible shift to those before the technology used to process cheques comes to the end of its working life next year.”

It was agreed business customers would be better serviced using electronic payments, ACC head of business customer service delivery Phil Riley said.

“Electronic payments are more efficient and secure, with only a small percentage of customers still choosing to make their payments by cheque.

“We’ll be working closely with our affected customers to give them as much support as we can to make this change.”

Spending up for August New Zealanders look to have heeded Reserve Bank governor Adrian Orr’s advice in August and headed out to spend.

Seasonally adjusted electronic card spending lifted 1.1 per cent in August after falling 0.1 per cent in July.

Core retail spending, excluding fuel and vehicle purchases, lifted 1.3 per cent after falling 0.4 per cent in July.

The central bank cut rates by 50 basis points to a record low 1 per cent on August 7 and Orr called on consumers to spend more and businesses to invest more.

Fuel was the only retail industry to show a decline, falling 1.4 per cent or $8 million to $581 million.

The largest increase in spending was on durables, including hardware, furniture and appliances, which rose $23 million or 1.7 per cent. Consumables, including groceries and liquor, were up $16 million or 0.8 per cent. Hospitality spending also lifted $16 million or 1.5 per cent.

Spending in the apparel industry rose 4.5 per cent or $13 million after falling in July.

In actual terms, retail spending on electronic cards was $5.35 billion in August, up 2.8 per cent or $147 million versus the same month a year earlier.

Core retail spending was $4.59 billion, up 5 per cent from a year earlier.

Cardholders made 150 million transactions with an average value of $49 per transaction.

“We are onsite and dealing with the liquidator among other matters,” Booth said.

Receivership rules mean Booth and Maginness will do what they can to retrieve as much money as possible for Kiwibank as a secured creditor, while as liquidator Damien Grant’s job is to get as much as he can for the others. Grant’s first report is due later this week.

Other creditors with registered securities include Window Treatments NZ, Mattson Joinery, Nulook Creations, Fletcher subsidiary Firth Industries, Asmuss Steel, Waikato Steel Fabricators and Allied Concrete.

Kiwibank has appointed receivers to Stanley Group, the construction firm moved into liquidation last week.

Matamata-based Stanley Group was voted into liquidation by shareholders on September 5 and about 120 staff laid off, with early estimates of $5-10 million owing to creditors.

Stanley Group’s directors are Craig Davison, Robert Marshall and Kevin Stanley.

The group company was moved into liquidation along with several other entities including Tallwood Holdings, a prefabrication unit.

Stanley had been working on sev-

eral Housing NZ and private developments.

Its website also boasted work on Chateau Tongariro, Ocean Shores Retirement Village, Delegat’s head office and work for Cooper and Co. Last Friday, Kiwibank moved to appoint receivers Jared Booth and Tony Maginness from Baker Tilley Staples Rodway.

As well as becoming receivers for six of the companies already in liquidation, the duo are also appointed as receivers for Stanco1 and Stanley Interiors, which are not in liquidation but are linked to Stanley Group.

According to the Companies Office, Kiwibank has a general security agreement from February 2011.

If you haven’t already thrown away your chequebook, the time might be nearing as Inland Revenue and the Accident Compensation Corporation call time on them.

Following a drop in the number of cheques cashed by customers, both organisations would no longer accept them as a payment option from March next year.

IR received the largest number of cheques in the previous financial year out of any public sector agency with 430,000. ACC received around 25,000 from business customers.

At the end of the financial year (June 2019), only 5 per cent of payments received by IR and ACC were by cheque. The numbers had also been dropping about 20 per cent annually.

“Cheques are part of a paper-based world and don’t mesh with the increasingly digital world we now operate in,” IR deputy commissioner Sharon Thompson said.

“The number of cheques being used is spiralling down and will continue to trend that way. Elec-

Historic win for Tall Blacks NZME The New Zealand men’s basketball team has dramatically kept alive its hopes of qualifying for next year’s Tokyo Olympics by beating the much higher ranked Turkey 102-101 in a thriller in Dongguan.

The Tall Blacks stunned the European giants in their final classification game at the Basketball World Cup in China to secure a spot at an Olympic qualifying tournament next year.

It’s New Zealand’s first ever win over Turkey and was made possible by six Tall Blacks scoring double digits.

Rob Loe and Isaac Fotu led the side with 17 points each.

The plan under head coach Paul Henare at the tournament was to run at pace, space the floor and create open looks for a team of shooters, ‘bigs’ included.

That game plan had earlier forced heavyweights Brazil and Greece to close games but this time it turned in the Tall Blacks favour, securing a top 20 finish and a shot at the Olympic Games repechage next year.

The win was built on a wide reaching offensive effort, with Loe named man of the match for a display that included one handed put back dunks, three rebounds, four assists and his trademark shooting from deep, ending with 17 points including 3 of 5 from downtown.

The support cast was extensive with Fotu posting 17 points and 5 boards, and young Finn Delany coming alive for a breakout performance at this level with 12 points and 7 massive rebounds.

The power forward found his hoops and his confidence in an aerial display that wowed the crowd and quietened the Turks, spending much of this time at altitude above the rim.

Tai Webster had 12 points, three boards and three assists while the tournament’s leading scorer Corey Webster also had 12 and dished off five dimes as he was often shut down by the Turkish scout.

“I am so proud of this team, for their fight and the commitment to play the way we want to play, to be able to do it on this stage is just unbelievable.

“I haven’t looked at the box score yet, but I think we had five or six guys in double figures and a couple of others with nine, we literally had everyone step up and play their roles well.

“That has been a strength of our group.

“Corey and Ike have had great tournaments but we needed everyone to turn up today and

Henare said Delany was huge, grabbing vital rebounds and dunking at will.

“He was amazing.

“The energy he played with was at a time when we needed it, at a time when we could sense a shift in momentum with the Turkish guys – you could see the fatigue hitting them.

“He saved his best for last, I am really happy for him.”

Henare was also pleased that the game plan paid dividends.

“It has been a little bit experimental to start with but the way the guys have bought in to the way we are playing and for it to come to fruition today on such a big stage – with our Olympic hopes on the line.

“Let’s not dance around the fact we didn’t achieve our goals but we still had plenty to play

for, against a top ten team in the world in what is the first time we have ever beaten Turkey as far as I can remember, there is just so much there.”

Captain Tom Abercrombie was huge on defence grabbing six rebounds, three assists and also finding some airtime with many of his 11 points at the rim.

They will now turn their attention to Asia Cup qualifying and the Olympic repechage tournaments next June.

Twenty four teams will play in four tournaments, with just the tournament winners booking a place in Tokyo.

Meanwhile, title-holders the United States romped into the Basketball World Cup knockout rounds with an 89-73 win over Brazil and booked a quarter-final clash with France, who were edged by Australia 100-98 in a thriller.

It’s still the Big Three at the top AP At some point, of course, Rafael Nadal and the rest of the Big Three will stop winning Grand Slam titles, someone younger will emerge and a shift at the top of tennis will happen.

Just not yet.

And while so much attention in the sport has been focused recently on trying to figure out who will break up the dominance of Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, it might just be more fun to contemplate – from now until the Australian Open in January, at least – how that trio’s competition for the most major championships will end up when they’ve all walked away from the game.

After eventually emerging with a 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Daniil Medvedev in a memorable seesaw of a US Open final, Nadal insisted that, yes, he wants the record by the time he’s done, but, no, it’s not all that matters to him or how he’ll define his own happiness.

That’s fine, of course.

To each his own.

But the rest of us can – and should – track it and care.

“He’s in a better position today,” one of Nadal’s coaches, Francisco Roig, said after his guy edged Medvedev in a 4-hour,

50-minute epic.

“But all of them are still winning tournaments. It’s a long way, but he’s in the best position.”

Here’s the current count: Federer 20, Nadal 19, Djokovic 16.

In 2019, Djokovic and Nadal won two majors apiece, drawing closer to Federer, whose most recent Slam trophy came at the 2018 Australian Open.

Each has a career Grand Slam, too.

Federer’s tally: eight from Wimbledon, six from the Australian Open, five from the US Open, one from the French Open.

Nadal’s tally: 12 from the French Open, four from the US Open, two from Wimbledon, one from the Australian Open.

Djokovic’s tally: seven from the Australian Open, five from Wimbledon, three from the US Open, one from the French Open.

The other relevant numbers are their ages: Federer 38, Nadal 33, Djokovic 32.

Nadal hasn’t been this close in the standings since the score was Federer 1, Nadal 0, after Wimbledon in 2003.

By the time Nadal picked up his first major, at the 2005 French Open, he trailed 4-0.

For so many years, so many folks were prepared to proclaim Federer the “GOAT” – Greatest

Of All-Time – based largely on his accumulation of majors and a subjective assessment of supposed aesthetics.

Others would point out that Nadal’s edge in their head-tohead series, which currently stands at 24-16, should give him the nod.

Djokovic, meanwhile, elbowed his way into the “best ever” discussion, too, because he’s the only one to have won four majors in a row, leads both of the others head-to-head (26-22 over Federer, 28-26 over Nadal) and broke up their hold on the No. 1 ranking.

What’s most impressive, really, is how this trio has ruled the sport for about 15 years.

“The three of us are doing things that never were done in the history of tennis,” Nadal said.

“I take pride in being part of this fight.”

They have won 51 of the last 59 Grand Slam titles, including the past 12, and there hasn’t been a first-time male champ at a major since 2014.

Here’s how different things are in the women’s game: Bianca Andreescu’s 6-3, 7-5 win against Serena Williams made the 19-year-old Canadian the seventh first-time major champion in the past 11 events.

Or put another way: Andrees-

cu gave the women a Grand Slam champion born in the 2000s before the men have had one who was born in the 1990s.

Some took it as a sign that change was afoot when Nadal was the only member of the Big Three to get to the semi-finals at the US Open.

Too old for this?

Two 23-year-olds reached the semi-finals, Medvedev and Matteo Berrettini, so maybe this was the time for a younger man to hold a trophy?

No. Instead, Nadal became the first man in the professional era to win five majors after turning 30.

“I can say that I’m sure all of us, we’re fighting our best to try to make this transition.

“It’s really tough, because these guys, they are playing good tennis.

“I don’t know what else to say.

They are just playing amazing tennis,” Medvedev said.

“It’s really tough to beat them, even to get a set from them.

“Even every game, to win, is tough.

“We’re just doing our best job to try to make it happen sometimes.”

In the meantime, Federer v Nadal v Djokovic provides plenty to talk about.

Sophie Pascoe has claimed another world championships title with a dominant swim in the Women’s 100m Freestyle S9 at the World Para Swimming Championships in London.

The Christchurch swimmer turned in 28.86 seconds, before stretching even further ahead of her competition to touch the wall in one-minute point two zero, over two and a half seconds ahead of Spain’s Sara Gascon in second place.

“I think it’s really exciting to kick start it off with a gold.

“I definitely would have liked to have sub-minuted again, but it was a gold medal swim, I gave it everything and just really stoked to start the meet off like that.

“It’s one of the best venues I’ve ever swam in, as soon as I had my first warm up the other day it was how it felt seven years ago so it hasn’t changed, it’s a fast pool, the complex is great, the atmosphere is great and the people are awesome, it’s great to be back here with the New Zealand team.

The win marks Pascoes ninth world title and will now go on to try and do the same in the 100m backstroke, followed by one of her key events the 100m butterfly and then finishing off with the ‘splash and dash’ the 50m freestyle.

“I’m really looking forward to my meet, I have watered down my programme for a lot of reasons, but it’s about focusing on Tokyo and getting the slots here at world championships for those events.

The win also ensures the Paralympics spot at the Tokyo Paralympics.

Pascoe holds the world record time of 59.78 seconds, which she set in Auckland in June.

After setting a personal best in the morning’s heat, Hamish McLean returned to the pool to swipe a further four seconds off the PB he set back at the Rio Paralympics in 2016.

His time of five minutes 22 flat in the S6 400 free is also an Oceania Record.

“Happy with the time, it’s a PB and what I came here to do,” said McLean.

“I’m happy with the race and looking forward to the rest of the week.”

Another one bites the dust

England will be in the money

A

nother NRL season has come to an early end for the Warriors, and how fitting that they finished a largely forgettable year with a pretty good win.

It pretty much sums up the Warriors, doesn’t it?

They’re a team that – as Blake Green put it in a post-match interview following that win over the Raiders on Saturday – plays at 8/10 one week, and 2/10 the next.

If it’s frustrating for us as fans, imagine how frustrating it must be for the players and the club officials.

The question is, what can be done about it?

And will something be done about it?

I read a headline, or a tweet, or something, at some stage in recent weeks – and I didn’t go on to read past it – suggesting that in the past 25 years the Warriors have achieved nothing.

I agree that their results on the paddock overall don’t make great reading, but I disagree that the Warriors have achieved nothing.

I very much doubt that rugby league in New Zealand would be where it is today, had it not been for the Warriors.

If New Zealand didn’t have a team in the NRL, it would not be followed as widely in New Zealand as it is.

Twenty-five years ago, I was 11 years old, and in one of my final years at Tinwald School I had a teacher who was an avid St George Dragons fan.

That was pretty much all I knew about league back then – that Mr Mills supported a league team called the Dragons and they wore red and white.

But after 1995, some of the many fond childhood memories I have include spending Sunday afternoons sitting around with my family, sharing a bowl of

chips, and watching whatever league or rugby was on the television.

The Warriors became my team, as they did for thousands of people around the country, and if there was a prize for the team with the most passionate fans, they’d be damn near close to taking that out every year.

They stick by their team through thick and thin, and it’s not always been easy.

But as the saying goes, every dog has its day.

Every time someone gives me grief about being a Warriors fan – and not surprisingly, it happens reasonably regularly – that’s what I say.

Our time will come.

Are there things that can be done to make that time come sooner?

Sure! How about, instead of signing up a few good players coming towards the end of their careers, how about harnessing some good, young talent?

Shaun Johnson’s off to the finals with the Sharks this season, and on the sideline for the Raiders on Saturday was a young guy

called Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad.

Remember him?

Not so long ago he was showing a bit of promise for the Warriors, and now he’s also topeight bound with the Raiders.

Just two of a few former Warriors who are continuing to flourish after leaving the club.

But whoever lines up for the Warriors in the future, they simply have to have the belief.

They need to start strong and play at 80 per cent or above every week.

They can’t afford to throw in those 2/10 performances that Green was talking about after the Raiders win.

Remember the last time we made the top eight?

The season when the Warriors started with that incredible, unheard-of winning streak?

When we were first introduced to their standing around in a circle and taking deep breaths together as they regrouped after scoring?

Whatever they did leading into that season, let’s do that again. And hopefully, in 2020 we might crack that top eight again.

Getting that balance

By Christopher Reive If anyone in the All Blacks camp is stuck for ways to take their mind off rugby during free time in Japan, they won’t have to look further than prop Angus Ta’avao for suggestions.

While he’s one of 19 players in the 31-man squad attending their first Rugby World Cup, Ta’avao is well aware of the need to separate work from downtime over what could be a nine-week stay in the country.

And he’s got plenty of ideas of how to go about doing that.

“The options are endless really,” he said.

“I love Japan.

“The culture’s awesome, the people are respectful, the food’s delicious – I mean, it’s pretty hard to find a bad ramen – and I don’t mind getting down to the karaoke bars and giving it a bit of a whirl.

“We’ve got a little bit of downtime, the boys like to sing in the showers and on the bus so I’m sure they’ll be keen to get a mic in front of them and have a singalong there.

“There’s the classic saying it’s a marathon not a sprint and if you go too hard you can blow out pretty easily, mentally as well.

“We’ve got no shortage of finding that balance and we’ve got great people around us to manage that.”

It was a facet of the campaign that was reinforced by Ian Foster, who is setting out on his second

NZME As the current world champions, it would be expected that the All Blacks are in for a mega payday should they claim their third successive Rugby World Cup in Japan.

However, it has been revealed that England players are set to share a jackpot of almost triple the amount of the New Zealand prize pool.

The All Blacks will each receive $150,000 if they’re successful in defending the World Cup as part of a total $4.65 million pool.

And should the Kieran Read-captained side reach the final, but fail to win, they will be paid $35,000.

But sharing a prize pool of $13.4 million, the England stars will each take home $432,040 if they lift the Webb Ellis Cup victorious for the first time since 2003.

In a change from the 2015 payment structure, the England players will receive bonus payments, increasing from the quarter-finals in a four-tiered bonus structure.

Reaching the quarter-finals is understood to be worth 10 per cent of the bonus pot, which would grant extra payments of around $30,722 per player, should they reach the last four.

Although they’re set to play for much less than their English rivals, the potential payment is the last of the All Blacks worries with former All Black prop Wyatt Crockett assuring it won’t be a motivating factor for the men in black.

“There is so much that goes into winning a Rugby World Cup. “Money comes and goes, but what doesn’t is that trophy,” Crockett said.

“You can always say that you have won a World Cup and that is very special for myself and the guys.

“This World Cup is going to be incredibly tough and the motivation is to get your name and your team into history – a three-peat would be massive for the boys.

“As a player you want to be a player who has gone out there and won a World Cup.” On top of any bonuses they secure at the World Cup, team members will also be paid $7500 a week from the time the men in black go into camp.

Members of the All Blacks’ victorious 2011 World Cup team received a $100,000 bonus.

Based on inflation that figure equates to $122,299 in 2019.

Angus Ta’avao is one All Black who already knows his way around the Japanese culture.

“The pressure is all encompassing, but you’ve got to have a bit of fun there,” Foster said.

“You’ve got to actually enjoy the experience, so making sure we get our work done and prepare the way we want to, but part of that is giving all of us a chance to get out of the hotel and enjoy the culture.

“You’ve got to get that balance right.”

The All Blacks will spend the best part of two weeks getting familiar with the surroundings and conditions before their first pool match against South Africa on September 21.

For Ta’avao, having the chance to fly out to Japan with the All Blacks didn’t seem all that likely to him as recently as last year.

“I think it’s unreal,” he said of the opportunity to play in the World Cup. “You play these games throughout the year and it’s all building up, but now it’s literally you win or you go home and you’re representing the country, there’s a lot of high expectations but that’s what we love.

“We’ve talked about embracing that and using it to fuel us.”

Win keeps A side in the Hanan hunt

Mid Canterbury A’s 38-15 win over North Otago in Hinds on Saturday ensured they remained in the hunt to take out the Hanan Cup rugby competition.

But, to bring it home they’ll need to produce a pretty special performance at home on Saturday in their final game of the season against South Canterbury, with a bonus-point and a winning margin of around 22 points required.

Considering the last time the two sides met, in South Canterbury’s home fixture on August 17, it was South Canterbury who came out on top 41-22, a pretty big turnaround was needed. But Mid Canterbury A coach Pete Manson knew he had the the team capable of doing it.

“After the weekend I’m convinced we’ve got it right, so there were some happy boys.

“They know what winning feels like and they are really starting to feel that with three on the trot now,” Manson said.

Those last three wins were one against Canterbury Maori Development, and two against North Otago in the Hanan Cup competition.

The Hanan Cup is a competition fought out each season between the A or development sides from Mid Can-

terbury, South Canterbury and North Otago, with all three playing each other twice in home and away fixtures, while the unions’ main sides contested the Hanan Shield.

Last year Mid Canterbury A only won the one game, so this season they’d made big progress, Manson said.

Manson went into Saturday’s latest game with a plan of making the most of the power on his bench.

“In every game we got to about the 50 minute mark and we tended to drop our intensity and let one or two tries in, so we tinkered a bit with the bench and made the call to inject a whole lot of players at the 50 minute mark,” Manson said.

And it worked.

“All the boys that came on just made a big difference and things just continued on,” Manson said.

With the season now coming down to one final game, it’s a plan likely to be carried over into that match against South Canterbury on Saturday.

That game will be the curtain-raiser to the main event – the Heartland Championship round four match between Mid Canterbury and South Canterbury – at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds.

The match between the two A sides will kick off at 12.50pm, followed by the main affair at 2.30pm.

Mid Canterbury A’s Paovale Sofai has to take evasive action, as team-mate Tait Chisman attempts to break through the North Otago defence.

Champion jumper may return NZME Talented jumper Jackfrost may not be lost to racing just yet.

The recently crowned New Zealand Champion Jumper was all but retired after injuring a suspensory ligament when campaigning in Australia earlier this year, but there are positive signs after recent stem cell therapy.

“He’s had a stem cell plant done,” said Brian Anderton, who trains the gelding in partnership with his son Shane.

“He is only nine, so it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t get back to the races this season, there is still another season after that.”

While Anderton is upbeat about Jackfrost’s possible return he said the gelding’s welfare is their top priority.

“He’s at John Howe’s place, he owns him (as part of the Frosty’s Shoutin The Beers Syndicate),” Anderton said.

“He’s up there at the moment and he went ahead and got that done (stem cell therapy).

“They are going to give him

a scan shortly just to see what progress it is making.

“If the diagnosis and everything is all right we will give him another go. He had never been lame, so that’s something.

“It’s a sit and wait thing. We have just got to go on what the scans say. John is a top trainer and he can put him on the jogger behind the cart and jog him for a couple of months.

“We will just watch the progress from there.”

Jackfrost was crowned New Zealand Champion Jumper at the New Zealand Thoroughbred Horse of the Year Awards in Auckland on Sunday and Anderton was delighted with the accolade for his jumper.

The son of Gallant Guru, who was bred by Anderton and his wife Lorraine, won three of his eight starts last season, including the Grand National Hurdles (4200m) and Great Northern Hurdle (4200m).

His win in the Great Northern Hurdle was a highlight for Anderton as it had eluded the veteran trainer for many years.

“It was great for Shane, but it was always one of my ambitions to win a Northern,” Anderton said.

“I got placed in steeples and hurdles, but I couldn’t win one.

“But he bagged that for us, so that was a hell of an achievement for me at my twilight.”

Anderton had another great result on the weekend with Wise Men Say winning the Great Northern Steeplechase (6400m) at Ellerslie.

Anderton co-bred the son of Yamanin Vital and he was delighted for trainer Raymond Connors who owns the gelding with his father Mark.

“We had a great thrill out of the Great Northern,” Anderton said. “That was the seventh Great Northern win that goes back to Princess Mellay.

“It was great for the horse himself, and (his sire) Yamanin Vital.

“It is also good for the Connors. They have been great supporters over the years and it’s nice to see them getting rewarded.”

Williams notches 700 wins NZME Canterbury jockey Kylie Williams had a day to remember at Riccarton on Saturday.

Not only did she pick up a winning double, she also secured her 700th career win in the saddle.

Williams ticked up win number 699 aboard Morweka in the gavelhouse.com Open Handicap (1000m) before riding home Queen Jetsun to win the US Navy Flag at Valachi Downs Rating 65 (1400m).

Williams was delighted to get the win aboard the Tony and Lyn Prendergast-trained mare and revealed the pair have a lot in common.

“That horse is pretty special,” she said.

“We both have screws in our ankles and I have been associated with her since she was a young one.

“She is pretty special and for her to carry on, a bit like me, when all the injuries take a toll on you.”

Williams said it was also poignant to bring up the milestone with the connections involved in the horse.

“The owner has been pretty good to me and especially for Tony and Lyn. “I have been with them for 20odd years and they keep putting me on and have faith in me.

“It was really nice all round,” she said.

Williams has been happy with the way her riding has been going of late, but admits the senior riding ranks in the South Island are a bit thin at the present time.

“I have been getting a lot of support this time back around,” she said.

“The senior ranks down here are a bit minimal at the moment, so that probably makes it a little bit easier.

“In saying that there are a lot of apprentices down here too.

“I’m thankful to the people that put me on.”

The mother of three made a special mention of her family

support towards her career.

“I have got a pretty good background with family helping me out and the kids are pretty good,” she said. “Logan (17) is old enough to look after himself, Rico (11) is pretty independent, and the wee girl Rhiarn (3) controls the house.”

With 700 wins to her name Williams couldn’t single out any particular race as a highlight, but said her win on Saturday would stay with her for some time.

“All of them are pretty special and mean something,” she said.

“There is nothing that really jumps out, but that horse the other day, Queen Jetsun, she has been pretty special.”

Australian Hall of Fame trainer David Hayes will return to the Hong Kong ranks for the start of the 2020-21 racing season. The senior trainer for Lindsay Park in Australia, Hayes spent a decade in Hong Kong from 1996, winning two premierships.

His nephew Tom Dabernig and son Ben Hayes will continue the Lindsay Park operation that includes a primary training facility in Victoria with satellite stables in Melbourne and Sydney. “I haven’t taken this decision lightly and over the past 15 years we’ve been developing Lindsay Park Euroa into a worldclass training centre,” Hayes said.

“I have full confidence in my team.

I’m really excited about watching the boys flourish. I’m sure they will do well and I’m only going to be a phone call away.”

Delighted trainer Rickie Alchin said he had weighed everything up after the eight-year-old’s sparkling Melton win on Saturday night. “I’ve had Cup Week over there in the back of my mind for a while, but I used those 10 days and two good races down in Melbourne as a real test for him,” he said. “He won them both so well, so he sort of made the decision for me. The Dominion will be his main target, but he’ll run in that good trot on NZ Cup Day as well. And what about the Auckland Inter Dominion? “That’s an option, but it’s run in the other direction so I need to test him out. I’ll speak to Menangle about organising a trial the Auckland way of going to help me make that decision,” Alchin said.

Aussie conquests still a major spur for top trainer NZME Murray Baker has now been recognised with two of the highest honours in New Zealand racing, but he’s not about to rest on his laurels.

Last year, Baker was inducted into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame and on Sunday night he picked up the Outstanding Contribution to Racing Award at the New Zealand Thoroughbred Horse of the Year Awards in Auckland.

“It rates right up there with the Hall of Fame [induction],” Baker said.

“I was quite surprised to get it, but I knew something was up when I found out my family were all going to be there for the night.

“It’s an honour to get the award and it was special to have my daughter, Reidun, and her husband, Dan, come up from Martinborough, and Bjorn and his wife, Andrea, fly over from Sydney.

“It was great to have my old Aussie mate Brian Nutt there, too.

“It really seems like a distant memory when they start reeling off some of the big winners I’ve had.”

Baker flew in from Melbourne on Sunday after watching his

promising 3-year-old Long Jack win a maiden 1400m at Ballarat last Friday and stablemate The Chosen One finish a game fifth in the Group 2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday, while son Bjorn made a fleeting trip fresh from a double at Randwick, including a runaway win in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes by Samadoubt.

Adding to the memorable evening for Baker, he and his training partner, Andrew Forsman, were the recipients of the New Zealand Trainer of the Year Award for the third successive year and fourth time in five years.

Baker and Forsman have completed seven seasons in partnership and the stable has grown from strength to strength, achieving a record-breaking 143 wins two seasons ago.

This past season the partners wound up as leading trainers with 112 wins, 25 black-type winners and more than $3.8 million in prizemoney on the local scene.

Baker was quick to pay tribute to Forsman’s input for another wonderful season.

“The part he plays in the operation is huge,” Baker said.

“He’s got an exceptional talent and understands the game. He’s

great with the staff and patient with the horses.”

Baker has earned the utmost respect in Australia, having continuously made successful raids on feature events.

He has won 21 Group 1 races in Australia, more than any other New Zealand trainer.

And it is that pursuit of major Australian prizes that keeps Baker going.

“I’m addicted to Australian racing,” he said. “I love the thrill of taking a horse over there and winning one of their big races.

“I get withdrawal symptoms when I can’t find one to take over.”

Aimee Cosgrove is charged with getting people more active, more often, in her new role as physical health advisor for Sport Canterbury in Ashburton.

Sport Canterbury’s new Ashburton-based physical health advisor knows better than anyone the difference a healthy lifestyle can make.

That’s because over the past year Aimee Cosgrove has made huge changes in her own life, and now she’s looking forward to helping others do the same through her new role, advising Mid Canterbury people on green prescriptions.

When she first saw the green prescription job advertised 18 months ago, she was interested, but knew she wasn’t the right person for the job at the time.

“I wasn’t healthy.

“I couldn’t go ‘hey, look at me, you go and get active’, so that kind of motivated me,” Cosgrove said.

She set about changing her life, and losing weight.

She changed her diet, cut out carbs and junk food, started going to aqua classes at the EA Net-

works Centre pool three times a week, and once she lost a bit of weight and felt more comfortable in herself, she started doing classes at the gym.

For many people, it’s a similar story – finding that motivation to make a change, or the confidence to actually make that first step.

And for many, that’s where Cosgrove will now come in.

Her role as Sport Canterbury Mid Canterbury’s physical health advisor is about getting more people more active, more often.

Cosgrove said many people have said to her it must have been hard, getting to where she is now.

And for the first couple of weeks, it was.

But once old habits were broken, she didn’t look back and her new routine has become the norm.

She doesn’t actually know how much weight she’s lost all up,

choosing to measure the change in ways other than jumping on the scales.

For her, it’s been about dress sizes, and she’s dropped five of them.

“It’s a nice feeling, going into a normal clothes shop, not the big girls’ shop, and being able to buy clothes off the rack,” Cosgrove said.

She feels good and knows she looks better, and she can’t wait to help others feel the same and tap into some old knowledge and skills.

For Cosgrove – a mum of two – after five years of working as a netball administrator, the new role will see her go back to using some of the Bachelor of Health Science degree she got when she left school.

Sport Canterbury Mid Canterbury manager Jan Cochrane said that Cosgrove’s background and

her passion for the health industry will be of benefit in the role, and Sport Canterbury is extremely pleased to have her on board.

“Mid Cantabrians who require green prescription services will be met with passion and understanding from Aimee, who understands the importance of physical activity and healthy lifestyle living,” Cochrane said.

A green prescription is a health professional’s written advice to a patient to be physically active, as part of the patient’s health management.

Generally, people are referred to the service from GPs, but some people do self-refer.

Cosgrove said green prescriptions are for anyone over the age of 16, of any ability, and the sky’s the limit when it comes to the kinds of activities on offer in Mid Canterbury.

She can help people get into

“Sometimes it’s just about supporting someone to go into the pool for the first time,” Cosgrove said.

“There’s no one script that fits everybody.

“It’s definitely an individual approach and it’s got to be their goals, it can’t be me telling them what I want them to do.”

It’s about breaking down barriers and opening up a world of new possibilities to people, and Cosgrove can’t wait for people to start seeing and feeling the benefits.

She’ll run her first Be Active programme – a group programme which involves education and opportunities to try new activities – on Tuesday mornings from 10am-11.30am for the first six weeks of term four.
