Seth up for tree challenge

Twenty-seven-year-old Seth Mischeski of Ashburton has overcome his fear of heights as he fulfils his dream career of being an arborist.

And it is just as well, as he scales mammoth trunks and their untamed branches up to more than 30 metres above the ground.

“When I started, I hated heights,” he said.

But in those early days of his apprenticeship he found he began to get used to it, and he could get higher and higher as his tolerance grew.

“And once you are working up there, you don’t have time to think about it, you just have stuff to do,” Mischeski said.

At the same time, he believed it was good to have some degree of nervousness about being so

high up, as this just made him all the more careful and made sure he took extra care for safety.

Mischeski is an arborist at Four Seasons Tree Care. He and colleague Sami Baker are currently gearing up for the South Island Regional Tree Climbing Competition at the Ashburton Domain tomorrow.

Tree climbing is a competitive domain within the arboriculture industry, and the events planned are set to test arborists’ skills. They will include an aerial rescue event, where the climber ascends the tree to rescue an injured person, in the form of a dummy, as well as a work climb where a climber has to reach four different stations, and a speed climb where the climber has to get to the top and ring a bell as quickly as possible. All climbers are harnessed.

The New Zealand Arboriculture Association holds four regional tree climbing compe-

titions each year, with one in the South Island. The top climbers from each event gain entry to the National Tree Climbing Championship.

At first both Mischeski and Baker were on the waiting list for the event, until recently news came through they could now compete.

It is the first time the competition has been held in Ashburton, and Mischeski said it would also be the first time he would be competing in a tree-climbing competition.

“It’s sort of rude not to attend an event in your home town, and it’s a good opportunity to meet other arborists and learn new skills,” he said.

“My goal is just to do it and have fun.”

He also thought it was great that such events could raise awareness of arboriculturalist careers, particularly with a strong demand in New Zealand

and a shortage of trainees.

“There’s a lot of people you talk to and you say ‘I’m an arborist’, and they are like: ‘What’s that?’,” he said.

That had certainly been the case for him when he was younger. Upon leaving Ashburton College he was undertaking an apprenticeship in horticulture at the Ashburton Domain, when he noticed the owner of Four Seasons, Lyall Jemmett, undertaking some tree work nearby.

“It’s the first time I had ever seen or heard about an arborist,” he said.

When he completed his horticulture apprenticeship he began at Four Seasons and has now added an apprenticeship in arboriculture to his CV. For Mischeski, it is a dream job. As he undertakes the tasks of trimming, removal and tree care, he gets a bird’s-eye view of the world each day.

Groups network on Pasifika festival

A Pasifika festival is on the cards for Ashburton following a visit by the Honorary Poto Williams yesterday.

The Christchurch East MP and Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector and Associate Minister for Immigration met with a range of community group leaders at the Ashburton District Council, where they appreciated being able to network with each other and get ministerial feedback.

“This has been fabulous in being able to connect with the wider local communities, who are doing some fantastic work on the ground, and to hear concerns and issues they are dealing with,” Williams said.

After the meeting she was to visit the Kai for Kids programme at Netherby School, as well as Safer Ashburton.

She said among issues raised from migrant communities present was uncertainty around extension to immigrant visas.

And among concerns raised

from the Pasifika community was access to housing and medical services.

In addition, there was discussion on establishing a Pasifika festival in Ashburton, and Williams informed about the potential availability of recent funding for such an initiative.

“One of the things I’m encouraging people here to do is to become connected and drive a Pasifika festival. It would be really good if that group was able to make that happen; it’s something we might be able to do with the local council as well,” she said.

Faalapotopoto (Community) Samoan Ashburton president Robert Tito confirmed that such a festival could go ahead, as soon as this coming summer, either prior to Christmas or after New Year.

“It was great to bring it up today and to talk to some of the leaders here,” Tito said.

Discussions to date on such a festival had only been among the Samoan community, as it had eyed up the Hampstead rugby club rooms for a day of food, stalls and performances.

Coal-fired boilers on the way out at hospital

Old coal fired boilers at Ashburton Hospital are on the way out and will be replaced by a new heat pump system.

However, plans to discharge water from those new heat pumps in the Ashburton Hospital grounds has raised red flags with the Ashburton Dstrict Council.

The Canterbury District Health Board plans to lodge an application with Environment Canterbury for a discharge consent for the heat pump system that will replace the coal fired boiler currently in use at the hospital. The discharge site, however, is at the outer limits of the town’s drinking water protection zone and there were fears the discharged water could affect groundwater quality.

When councillors raised concerns at Thursday’s activity briefing meeting, assets manager Andrew Guthrie said they were right to be concerned, but those concerns should be around a proposed mounding system for the discharge, rather than the discharge itself, he said.

The CDHB planned to drill new bores to 100 metres to take water for the new system and then to discharge the water using a mounding system that could potentially impact on both the tennis and hockey playing areas, Guthrie said.

In terms of protecting these areas the council had done everything it could under the Resource Management Act and the CDHB had now agreed to put some conditions around the discharge.

The council will have an opportunity for input when the application for abstraction was lodged, he said.

Snow, rain for Mid Canty

Farmers and skiers alike have welcomed a cold wet spell this week, and there could be more snow on the way.

About 10 millimetres of rain fell in Ashburton yesterday and there was about six centimetres of snow on Mt Hutt, with additional precipitation forecast overnight last night and this morning.

Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers president David Clark said farmers had had a particularly dry and mild winter, with not many “recharge events”.

“It was a timely rain with no detriment to stock health,” Clark said.

Calving and lambing had gone well, and sowing of crops was also going according to plan.

MetService data shows that as of September 5, just 309.2 millimetres of rain had fallen so far this year.

This compares to 508.6 millimetres last year for the same period, and 678.4 millimetres in 2018, 746.2 millimetres in 2017 and 392.6 millimetres in 2016.

Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said he expected as of today that there would be about 10 centimetres of snow from this latest cold spell, and there could be another five to 10 centimetres on Tuesday night next week with another southerly following nor’west conditions on Monday and Tuesday.

“It’s good to have a swing to the south to keep things cooler, and it’s better if there’s snow with that,” he said.

Cold temperatures without a snowfall could turn conditions firm, while fresh snow was always much appreciated.

Warm days in spring also led to softer and more skiable snow.

Ski season 2020 will finish the same time as it does each year, at the end of the school holidays.

Mt Hutt will close on October 11, just one month away from today.

It’s okay to swim against the tide

W

hen they’re given a chance to get down to the real nitty-gritty of what makes the Ashburton District tick, most of our elected members are keen to ask questions and look for answers.

While it’s their job to run the business of the district as a board, once every six weeks they get a chance to put staff in the hot seat and to dig down into the minutae. And that’s when they show their mettle.

It’s clear from the press bench who has read their brief-

ing reports, who’s done their homework and who might be looking at the information for the first time.

Often it’s the new chums, the first termers who hold the floor. They’re a refreshing bunch, well read and keen to have their say.

Asking questions doesn’t faze them and they’ll cheerfully plug on until they get the answers they’re looking for.

And it’s good to see, a group of newbies who are not afraid to speak out, who are encouraged to have a say and who take the opportunity.

The briefing meeting is a time where true colours show.

If there’s a financial query, odds on accountant John Falloon will be quick to ask it. And he’s equally as quick when it comes to making sure the i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed, regardless of the subject.

When it comes to getting answers, the prize has to go to Carolyn Cameron. She’s a veritable terrier, a new councillor who is determined to fully understand what’s happening and why, across a wide range of issues.

It’s refreshing stuff. Usually it’s the two or three termers who hold the floor, but in this term, under mayor Neil Brown’s very inclusive regime,

everyone who wants a chance to have a say gets a chance.

And as they’re quickly discovering, there’s no such thing as a wrong opinion. You can swim against the tide and it’s okay, swim against the tide when votes are cast and it’s okay.

There may have been fears that a council of just nine rather than 12 might have bombed.

It didn’t. What we’ve seeing is clear evidence that a smaller number of well read councillors who work as a team, can do the job at least as well as a bigger number.

It’s a numerical experiment that’s paid off.

Future proofing district’s agri-sector Identifying funding opportunities in the Ashburton District’s agri-sector is not being left to chance with funding for a specialist agricultural advisor being provided through the government’s Provincial Growth Fund (PGF).

Mid Cantabrian Richard Fitzgerald has been appointed to the role and will work under the umbrella of the Ashburton District Council, to identify funding opportunities that will help future proof the district’s agri-sector.

Fitzgerald is on the Mt Hutt College Board of Trustees, is a Wellbeing Opuke Executive, and is a director of Electricity Ashburton Limited.

In announcing the appointment, council chief executive Hamish Riach said the position was an important opportunity to enhance the district’s largest economic contributor and that would benefit the whole community.

“It’s a real pleasure to have Richard join us in this new role.

He has many years’ experience serving on several local boards and is very familiar with our district’s diverse primary-producing sector, having been a farmer and consultant himself,” Riach said.

“We are very fortunate to have a great depth of expertise across our community, and a local industry that has been working hard to maximise sustainability.

Building consents The number of building consents issued by the Ashburton District Council for the year to June 30 was well down on the previous year, dropping from 673 to 582.

Numbers dropped significantly during the Covid-19 lockdown, but surged in June. the value of consents issued for the year was $117,988 million, up on June 2019 ($115,259,771).

Rain water capture The EA Networks Centre is about to become self-sufficient when it comes to watering its green spaces, with the thousands of litres of rainwater captured from its roof to be used to irrigate gardens and lawns. The possibility of using water from the complex’s pools is also being looked into.

Fencing vandals New fencing installed by the council to keep vehicles out of a donga and biodiversity areas at Ashton Beach has been vandalised on several occasions. Posts have been pulled out and the council has had to re-fence on several occasions. Security in the area has been stepped up.

Elderly housing The list of properties on the council’s unlettable elderly housing list continue to grow with seven units in Mona Square and one in Kitchener Street now sitting vacant. The houses are not being relet because of the cost involved in bringing them up to minimum tenancy standards.

There are 14 people currently on the waiting list for a unit.

As part of a programme to help newcomers feel more at home in the district, next week has been designated Welcoming Week.

This year, Ashburton District Council is partnering with Mid Canterbury Newcomers’ Network to facilitate a series of mini tours which will welcome newcomers to some of district’s cul-

It’s a week of events intended to bring communities together.

Guided tours will include Base Youth Centre, Ashburton Public Library, Ashburton Museum, EA Networks Centre, Sports Canterbury, Ashburton Domain and Hakatere Marae. As part of the tours, locals will be encouraged to meet and welcome newcomers.

The district had been working hard to help newcomers feel more accepted and celebrated in their new community, and Welcoming Week will be another

great opportunity to do so, Ashburton mayor Neil Brown said.

“We want to make sure that those who are new here get a chance to see and experience the range of cultural and sporting facilities that are available so that they can enjoy them, get involved and perhaps make new connections too,” he said.

The Ealing Reserve Board and Ealing Library Hall Society are progressing their proposal to merge the district’s two groups.

Approval will be sought for all hall land, buildings other assets and the balance in its bank account to be vested in the council. If the council agrees to take the assets over, a meeting will be held to get community approval.

Long term plan With just one week until its survey on its long term plan closes, the council has received 940 online responses as well as a large number of written suggestions It is hoping the number of responses will top 1000. The online survey asks people to rate projects already in the long term plan to ensure the council’s spending long term plan meets the community’s needs.

Bridge replacement Work on the replacement of three bridges along the inland scenic route that cross the Rangitata Diversion Race has now been pushed out until October 5. The delay will see a shorter closure time for the bridges to minimise the impact on people living and running businesses in the area.

The work will start after the next school holidays and will take a much shorter time to complete than originally planned.

When Celia Colcord’s seventh child was just a toddler she knew instinctively that he was different to her other children.

The differences were slight, but showed in a fixation on lining up toys, hitting and aggression towards other children, his reaction to certain materials touching his skin and more. Celia knew something wasn’t right, but struggled to find someone who would listen to her concerns.

“I pushed and pushed Plunket to come and observe him, I pushed for answers,” she said.

Those answers eventually came, and at two years and nine months her son was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. Having a diagnosis was a relief, but it also came with the realisation that as a family their lives would be moving along a different path.

“When you first receive that diagnosis a person goes through a grieving stage, but because of that early intervention with my son, who’s now a teenager, he’s been able to be mainstreamed for most of his school years,” she said.

Achieving the best possible outcomes for a child on the autism spectrum relies on two things – early intervention and having a strong support network, for not just the child, but for parents and siblings too, Celia said.

She counts herself fortunate to have been living in an area where there were strong support networks in place and her family was able to attend a two-day workshop with other families where they learned about autism and how to live with an autistic family member.

That was invaluable for the family in understanding that autism was just part of who their youngest child was.

Airlift after injury A woman was flown to Christchurch Hospital after her hand was caught in machinery near Pudding Hill on Wednesday.

Emergency services responded to a report of a work-related incident at a rural property on Pudding Hill Road at 1.47pm. Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Andrew Norris said that the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to the reports of a woman sustaining serious injuries after being caught in a piece of machinery used in the process of cutting wood. The woman was initially reported to be trapped but had freed herself from the machinery shortly before the fire crew arrived. St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said the woman was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital, with moderate injuries.

Another show axed The Ellesmere A&P Association Committee has cancelled the upcoming Selwyn Spring Show, what was to be the 150th Ellesmere Show, due to the uncertainty around the Covid-19 Alert Levels. The decision comes after the Northern A&P Show in Rangiora, scheduled for October 23, was cancelled. The Ashburton A&P Association is meeting on Monday where it will discuss whether or not to proceed with its show on October 30-31.

In the Ashburton District there is a coffee group for parents with children with a wide range of disabilities, but Celia has now established a group specifically for families with children on the autism spectrum.

Autism is not new, but it is now recognised and accepted as a behavioural diagnosis. It’s a spectrum that is wide, with some people affected very mildly and others severely.

“But autism shouldn’t define a child, they’re defined by their character and their personality.

It’s just that autism gives that a different flavour. It’s about helping these kids and encouraging them to reach their absolute potential,” Celia said.

She’s established a support group that is slowly growing in members. It’s nothing formal,

Autistic people see, hear and feel the world differently to other people. It is not an illness or disease and cannot be cured.

Across New Zealand, autism affects approximately 93,000 people.

Some people are affected more than others, but all autistic people share some common differences in the way they see, hear and feel the world, they all have different strengths, abilities and challenges which affect their lives in different ways at different ages and in different environments.

Irrigation system The Ashburton Domain Oval is getting a new irrigation system.​​ Through its contractor, Freemans and PB & J Contracting Ltd, the Ashburton District Council is installing the new irrigation system that will help to maintain and improve the venue throughout the year. Work to install the system began on September 3 and is expected to be completed over two weeks.

Viaduct repairs Tinwald’s viaduct has been part of Ashburton’s roading network for decades, but it’s about to undergo some routine maintenance and that will mean it will be closed to traffic. A KiwiRail spokesperson confirmed that a section of Melcombe Street will be closed on October 5 to allow this work to be carried out. It will involve bolt tightening and clearing the bridge abutments. The street closure will be temporary for both vehicles and pedestrians, but the work is expected to be completed within a day.

Kai – so much more than a three-letter word

Kai, in Maori, might mean food, but the three-letter word packs a much bigger punch than just that.

He Waka Tapu’s whanau Kaimahi Juanita Richards explains.

“Kai is not just food, it is about giving, sharing and nourishing the spirit of people,” she said.

With that Maoridom philosophy in mind, Richards and her fellow He Waka Tapu workmates, Rana and Ellise, set up Karanga Mai Korero Kai, to bring whanau together once a week to learn about budgeting,

meal planning, following the Maramataka (Luna) calendar for crop planting, harvesting and preserving.

They also learn how to make their own Rongoa, natural Maori medicine, from the herbs and plants around them.

The name translates to “calling out to all, to come and share knowledge around kai”, Richards said and the pilot programme has proved its worth.

“We started with the basics of menu planning and how to feed a large family on a tight budget.”

Richards said, as the name suggests, the 10-week course is not just about feeding a family for under $20, the group members work together to foster

self-worth, grow knowledge to pass on to their tamariki (children) and give themselves an increased sense of belonging to the greater community.

Resourcefulness is one of Richards’ favourite topics. In the two-hour time slot the group discovered how to look at objects in a different light.

“We talked about planting our own vegetables and herbs.

“You don’t need fancy planter boxes to do that, use containers that you have already.”

At the end of the 10 weeks Richards said they are going to celebrate with shared kai.

“Everybody is going to bring something they have made from scratch in its purest form

as possible.”

After each meeting Richards as their kaimahi, heads to piri. org.nz to posts recipes, images and relevant information from the day that can be accessed whenever needed.

The pilot was aimed at parents with pre-schoolers.

The next course, which is filling up fast, is directed at families with older children and will be run during school hours once a week.

Winston signals his priorities Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters rocked into Ashburton on Sunday, as part of New Zealand First’s Back Your Future bus tour.

Peters mixed and mingled with Ashburton residents and popped into the Somerset Grocer for a coffee.

“Our priority is you – we want you to hear the facts straight from us,” said a promotional email sent to media prior to the tour, which has also taken in other South Island destinations this week, including Oamaru, Dunedin, Otago University and Mosgiel.

The visit through the Rangitata electorate wasn’t without drama with Peters finding himself facing criticism for not stopping in Timaru on his way through, instead electing to pass right through on his way to other destinations.

Scrambling after being subjected to the criticism, organisers of the tour confirmed they would be stopping in Timaru on their way back north after engagements in both Oamaru and Invercargill.

New tattoo studio a hit with Methven locals

Tattoo artist Lizzy Berkley has been overwhelmed with interest from clients since setting up her new studio in Methven.

She opened Gypsy Soul Tattoo last week and on her first days of operation has been busy with appointments and enquiries.

The 31-year-old mum of four and her partner moved to Methven in June, and she was initially looking at setting up a shop in Ashburton.

But discussions on a site did not end up going through, making her think that she should

probably consider her home town. “I thought ‘I live in Methven, why don’t I put a shop in Methven?’”

She then put a post on a community page asking if there was any retail spaces available and a landlord quickly got in touch.

“This one was ideal for what I was needing,” Berkley said of her new premises in The Mall.

Berkley, a former law student and dairy farmer, got into the profession when her own tattooist acquired a studio in Timaru in 2016 and asked her if she wanted to take out an apprenticeship with him. “He was a real perfectionist, his eye for detail was crazy good,” she said.

and jumped at the opportunity to extend her drawing medium from canvas to skin.

“It’s really cool, you meet all sorts of people, the interesting stories you hear from people because people tend to open up when you are tattooing them.”

She found her clients were mainly women, and aged from teenagers to those in their 70s, some of whom would shudder at what their late mothers might think of what they were doing.

“You are not limited with tattoos these days, you can pretty much do anything, anything you can imagine. It’s more an art form rather than a mark, it’s really cool to break those stereotypes.”

Protecting resthome residents

Non-qualifying partner super option closed As part of this year’s ‘wellbeing’ budget the New Zealand Government will close the “non-qualifying partner” provision in the superannuation legislation.

Until now, a pensioner could include their younger partner (under 65) in their payment, provided the couple’s combined other income was below $100 a week.

From November 9, the NZ Government is intending to remove this provision, so non-qualifying partners will no longer be able to be included.

The closure will have an immense impact on many people who are about to retire, and without any warning, people will not have time to re-set their retirement plans.

For example, a younger wife who is looking after an older man with health needs will, under the new law, no longer be applicable for the “non-qualifying partner” payment and will have to look for paid employment.

They are unlikely to find re-employment before they retire, may not qualify for any other benefit, and the non-qualifying partner option may be the only way for them to make ends meet.

Of course, this becomes even more imminent now that many New Zealanders over 55 years have lost their jobs as a result of Covid-19.

In 2017, the Treasury and Retirement Commissioner made a recommendation to the NZ Government, to increase the lead-in time to five years – it is unknown why this advice was not followed.

Many submissions have been made since, including by Grey Power New Zealand, but these have just bounced against the government’s brick walls.

In light of the current Covid-19 situation the NZ Government needs to seriously re-consider this deadline and at least provide a lead-in time of at least 12 months before this new law takes place, so affected people have time to re-set their retirement plans!

idents to be tested, as well as regular testing for staff.

Chief executive Simon Wallace raised the prospect of in-house testing at resthomes on August 12.

The idea’s been “heard positively” by Minister Salesa and the Health Ministry, he says.

“We think it will do a couple of things – it’ll free up pressure on the CBACs (com-

munity based assessment centres) and the GPs, and it will also mean that we can test our staff on-site.

“Across 650 facilities, if our registered nurses could have Covid-19 testing kits, or swabs, it would be hugely beneficial, but at the moment we’re being told the priority is around the border.”

The border should be a priority but, Wallace argues, so should aged-care facilities.

At the first sign of trouble, resthomes were locked down in Level 4-like conditions, barring visitors in all but the most desperate of situations, and banning workers from working across multiple facilities.

It’s easy to see why protecting resthome residents in the wake of Covid-19 is a good idea.

There’s this country’s own situation, in which 16 of 22 deaths have been in resthomes, including 12 at the country’s deadliest cluster, Christchurch’s Rosewood resthome and hospital.

News this week has confirmed ministers and officials are considering allowing inhouse Covid-19 testing at resthomes.

The Aged Care Association has been calling for registered nurses at more than 650 facilities around the country to be given coronavirus testing kits, which would mean they could test asymptomatic workers.

The association has been in talks with Associate Minister of Health Jenny Salesa and the Health Ministry, and it appears the idea is under genuine consideration.

However, the industry would point out that while every death is a tragedy, coronavirus has affected few resthomes in New Zealand, and a tiny number of residents.

The virus has been devastating in places like the United Kingdom, where, reports claim more than 17,000 people have died of Covid-19 in care homes, almost a third of all coronavirus-related deaths.

The recent surge of cases across the Tasman has been similarly sobering.

Up to yesterday, Australia had reported 678 Covid-related deaths, with 591 from Victoria. More than 450 of those deaths are in aged-care facilities, while almost 900 residents and 252 staff have tested positive.

The under-pressure Australian Government has increased funding to the sector by $A563 million. On Tuesday, the opposition Labor Party tried, and failed, to censure the Minister for Aged Care, Richard Colbeck.

A battle where no-one wins

W

hen Willi Huber passed away last month, no-one could have expected the oncoming onslaught.

For years now, Huber’s place as a founding-father of the Mt Hutt Skifield has gone almost without mention, seemingly destined only for the annals of time which would reflect on the positive impact he had on the mountain.

But in the aftermath of his passing, his legacy with the skifield has come under the microscope, thanks to a role he played years before even setting foot in New Zealand, with calls to have his name removed from two features on the mountain.

It’s been a tough few weeks – tough for those who have fought to see Huber’s name removed from the mountain, tough for Mt Hutt Ski Area, its staff and managers – all of whom who seem to have nothing but respect for Huber, and tough – most importantly – for his family, who have not only had to deal with the death of a much-loved family member, but also have seen his name in lights for all the wrong reasons.

This isn’t written to try and enter into the debate of what’s right and what’s wrong, but more to acknowledge the work of Mt Hutt Ski Area, its owners NZ Ski and in particular ski area manager James McKenzie.

In the heart of a busy domestic ski season, they all could have been forgiven for burying their heads in the snow and hoping that the conflict would go away. But instead, they’ve taken a pragmatic approach and tried to be as up-front about their process as possible.

Through listening to all sides, talking with some of those most impacted by those horrific events of decades ago and undergoing their own research, they’ve set a clear and definitive line as to where they stand and outlined exactly what is required before they even consider changing names.

And hopefully that effort hasn’t gone unrecognised. They’ve shown they are prepared to acknowledge the past, if presented with proof, but at the same time are still continuing to pay homage to a man who played such a vital role in the establishment of one of the most regarded winter destinations in New Zealand.

And that’s what probably needs to be remembered the most.

Some corners won’t agree with the names staying put and look upon Huber and his life with negativity, but there are equally as many, if, in this case, not more, on the other side who look back with admiration.

So, it’s a tricky situation and ultimately a situation where no-one will win.

YOUR VIEW Ashburton Trust Event Centre It is with much sadness we acknowledge the passing of one of the most positive, enthusiastic and determined past members of the Ashburton Performing Arts Theatre Trust.

Russell Anstiss was a member and chairman of the trust from 1993 to 2008.

During this time, Russell was pivotal in achieving many of the fundraising milestones needed to ensure the Ashburton Trust Event Centre could and would become a reality.

His enthusiasm and ability to encourage those around him into becoming ardent supporters of the venue, through his quick-witted tongue and persuasive nature, will long be remembered by not only those seeking to raise the money but probably more so by those who were being enticed into giving money.

Russell’s only regret I believe, will be the lack of financial support we were able to muster from the Labour Government of the time, although in typical Russell fashion, he got the last word on Prime Minister of the day, Helen Clark, who was

a VIP guest on stage during the opening night speeches when Russell reminded her of their failing in no uncertain terms.

A true entrepreneur, businessman and supporter of numerous community organisations, Russell, your contribution has ensured Ashburton has a world-class venue and the envy of many towns and cities throughout New Zealand.

It has received praise from both national and international artists and it has allowed the performing arts to flourish in our town.

It is a true legacy of your sup-

port. For this, we are eternally grateful.

‘The heart of Mid Canterbury’ D

o some people only feel good if they are having a bitch about something?

Last week I posted a talky bit on social media asking if people wanted ‘Welcome to Ashburton’ signs at either end of town and what should the ‘slogan’ on the signs be.

People overwhelming voted YES for the signs, but it was the slogan suggestions that upset me. To be more accurate a small minority of the suggestions upset me.

“Leave as soon as possible” and “Don’t stop, there’s nothing for your kids to do here” were a couple that grated me.

I don’t normally reply to comments on my page, but on this occasion I did. To the person who commented there’s nothing for the kids to do I said: “What about a swim at EA Pool, mountainbike on track, skills

bike park, skateboard park, Plains Railway, Fire museum, Art Gallery and Museum, Aviation Museum?”

All of those came off the top of my head while I had a couple of minutes spare during a song.

I’m not sure what I was expecting in return, maybe I was hoping for a “yeah true, we haven’t got it that bad after all”.

What I actually received was (And this came from another person altogether) “Museum, museum, museum . . . not really fun, don’t think actually open very much and definitely only a visit once kinda place. Skatepark – looks dodgy af . . . bike track . . . very messy at the moment and oh we going on a family holiday, so can’t actually fit in the kids’

bikes . . . so that leaves EA – “ohh let’s float down the lazy river” . . . yup I agree, good slogan.”

I couldn’t help myself! I had to reply to that.

“The museum is open 7 days a week (except public hols), the bike track was fantastic when I biked it this week, where is the very messy? Lazy River, LUXURY... didn’t have one at Hampstead pool when I was growing up here, BUT we did have a real river to swim in. Do you think some kids don’t know how to make their own fun these days?”

That’s where my defence of Ashburton stopped because several others jumped on the band wagon to support our town.

Like this comment. “I completely disagree! When we moved here from the North Island, we barely saw our kids during daylight hours the first wee while. There was so much

for them – even just going for walks & enjoying how safe & clean the place is.

They loved the library, having a movie theatre, Maccas, etc to hang out with new friends over a drink, the air museum, as well as the other one & art gallery.

Heaps! Plus a short drive to see mountains or water, close to so much else. The negative comments kind of prove what can happen to people when they have too much choice – they can’t decide so blame the situation & stop figuring things out for themselves.”

I just hope it’s not a case of a parent sitting on a device, having a whine, because their kids, also sitting on a device, have had a whine about there being nothing to do in this town.

Much easier to do that, than get off one’s chuff and help plant some natives at the bike track or

check out the latest exhibition at the museum (yes, they do change).

Get out there and get amongst it, really have a look at what’s on offer here. Change that mindset! Or I guess you could always move. Last I saw nobody was chained to this place.

Good luck finding a town in New Zealand with the employment opportunities, cost of real estate, mountains, sea, lake and facilities this one offers though.

Celebrating Tonga Language Week M

ãlõ e lelei. This week marks the 10th year of Uike Lea Faka-Tonga, Tonga Language Week.

The 2020 theme of “Fakakoloa ‘o Aotearoa aki ‘a e Lotu Mo’oni”, which in English means “Enriching Aotearoa New Zealand through prayer and faith” is the theme the Tongan community will use to underpin their Covid-19 response towards economic recovery and rebuild.

In my experience the Tongan community throughout Aotearoa are deeply spiritual people, and I know that it has been difficult for all of our Pasifika community to practice and celebrate their faith at this time, especially during lockdown.

It was difficult for them not to congregate together but they did if for our team of 5 million, for their families, for our community – and I thank them for that.

During the weekend I attended a celebration for the opening of Tonga Language Week – I spoke about the sacrifices we have all made which even made

it possible to meet that evening.

We were still social distancing, and following the appropriate restriction guidelines, but we were still able to celebrate together. It was an evening of joy and I was very proud to be able to take part.

When I first moved to Ashburton 24 years ago, it was not the diverse community that it is now. Over the years that has changed, and we have seen people move here from overseas and other parts of the country.

What we have seen as a result of this is the opportunity for people to open their hearts and minds to other cultures. We are able to celebrate and share in others’ traditions, stories and food.

Not only do our Pasifika community enrich us through prayer and faith but in many other ways too – through community, hymns, dance, solidarity and sport. We are also enriched in New Zealand through

the advocacy and strong voices of our Labour Pasifika caucus – in particular our female parliamentarians, Ministers Jenny Salesa, Poto Williams and Carmel Sepuloni, and Anahila Kanongata’a-Suisuiki.

We are lucky in Mid and South Canterbury to have a number of community organisations

who work very hard to support our Pasifika communities. I am looking forward to meeting with many of those groups this week, with Minister Poto Williams, to hear more about the support they have provided, challenges they face, and how best to move forward during these unprecedented times.

he latest evolution of a true motoring icon – the limited edition Golf GTI TCR is now available in New Zealand.

MAZDA CX-30

M

azda over the years have celebrated the arrival of new models with Great Drives.

These include a story Tasman Dreams by my motoring mate the late Dave Moore in a then new 3rd generation NC, MX-5. This involved a return trip from Christchurch via the Lewis and Arthurs passes, but with particular emphasis to the driving delights of SH6 from Westport to Greymouth.

Of which Dave wrote “The suck, draw and crash of wild surf is one of the surest cures for life-rage I know.

“And there’s no coastline quite like that of the west of the South Island for putting things into perspective-both visually and philosophically. Fortunately, the nation’s road-builders have been forced to carve out SH6 quite tight against the angry Tasman for much of the Westport to Greymouth stretch, prevented by spectacularly steep, bush-clad ramparts just inland from putting the road anywhere else.

“It’s very much MX-5 country, a magic 90-odd kilometre snake of beautifully-wrought curves and sometime deceptive hairpins that reward any driver with a modicum of petrol in their blood.”

Thanks for those words Dave!

For this was exactly what we experienced as we drove SH6, Especially so as it was even more inviting because of the noticeable lack of traffic Covid-wise (sometimes none at all for 10+minutes) during our

drive to Westport last week in the 2-litre GSX. Then while being the entry model and least powerful of the current CX-30 trio, it still immediately showed that Mazda’s now signature Zoom-Zoom feeling was present as soon as I got behind the wheel.

Indeed it was much like being in an MX-5, But then also having the advantage of more than sufficient space (1319 litres with the rear seats folded), and so with no worries about how much stuff the two of you needed for a week on tour.

For those unfamiliar with it, the CX-30 is a new model that’s based on the latest Mazda3’. As well it mirrors its curvaceous style. Size-wise it slots neatly in between the CX-3 (which is 120mm shorter) and the CX-5. It has the CX-30, name because there’s already a completely different, Chinese market only CX-4.

I had previously driven both the GTX and Limited versions of the CX-30. They’ve 2.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engines, producing 139kW at 6000rpm and peak torque of 252Nm at 4000rpm, six-speed autos and a quick-responding all-wheel-drive system.

So how then did the GSX with its 2-litre engine (which it shares with the MX-5) delivering 114kW and 200Nm of torque at 4000rpm, six-speed auto and front-wheeldrive stack up?

The answer – very well indeed.

And despite having 25kW and 52Nm less than its 2.5-litre siblings, it still pulled away eagerly but smoothly from low revs and then worked in very well with the responsive auto for both suitably quick overtaking and hill work. Weighing in some 90kg less than the other two no doubt helps here.

There is also a selectable sport mode for

those who wish, but other than trying this briefly I was both happy with and enjoyed the performance on hand.

At 100km/h open road cruise the revcounter sits at 1900rpm, and the claimed overall fuel use is 6.5L/100km. For our trip the computer indicated 6.9L/100km (which tallied up when refuelling).

Of course with its Zoom-Zoom factor and MX-5 relationship, despite sitting a little higher for the ease of both getting in and out together and achieving its 175mm ground clearance, the CX-30 with its precise, well weighted steering, turned in and flowed through corners very nicely.

On mainly dry roads the lack of allwheel-drive was not noticed, although care was taken, particularly when on the few non sealed access tracks.

Then it was both impressively quiet with road and wind noise very well suppressed, meanwhile the ride, thanks perhaps to its 16-inch wheels/tyres rather than the 18-inch ones of its siblings, was even more settled and bump resistant, all of which we enjoyed from the comfortable and neatly styled, cabin.

This, which as mentioned earlier has an MX-5esque feel about it for the driver to sit in comfortable, supportive seating while all the dials and controls are easily seen and used.

Plus there’s a quality feel and appearance to the dash and cabin.

As well the height adjustment for the passenger seat was certainly appreciated, as was the infotainment system with its 8.8-inch wide-screen, which includes sat-nav, phone-mirroring. It’s simple and straightforward to use via the console controls.

Despite being the entry model it has the same excellent head-up system as the others, which as well as showing your speed also shows the appropriate speed limit, and that for the chosen speed for the very useful adaptive cruise control.

Whilst there was just two of us on tour, the very smart cabin design means it is more spacious within than expected and could comfortably seat four adults for long distance travel.

But with rear seats up the luggage space is a neat 317 litres, so a well-packed weekend’s gear for four will be required.

There are a comprehensive array of safety features on board (some of which give lots of audible reminders) which means the CX-30 has one of the best possible ANCAP scores.

ifty years ago, the legendary ŠKODA 110 R Coupé celebrated its trade fair premiere in Brno, Czech Republic.

The elegant sports car with a rear engine was a huge sales success and served as the basis for the Czech car manufacturer’s legendary rally and racing cars.

ŠKODA invested heavily in modern production facilities for the new series and soon concentrated fully on the production of this newcomer due to the sales success of the rear engine saloon in export markets.

For this reason, ŠKODA discontinued production of the FELICIA convertible. However, demand for sports models remained strong, particularly in Western European markets. All eyes on Cup Week

Ashburton horseman Brent White is daring to dream big and hoping to wake up to reality.

The strike-rate horseman, who is based at the Ashburton Racecourse, has one eye on the second week of November and is hoping that his two stable stars may take their place in some of the biggest races of the week.

And runs 566 kilometres apart both yesterday and tonight at Addington by the two horses are being regarded as just another step towards reaching the end target.

Yesterday it was Winton where smart pacer Jazzy Star took on a red-hot field at Central Southland Raceway, and tonight it’s up to Addington where One Apollo will tackle the Group Three Ordeal Trotting Cup and some of the best square gaiters New Zealand has to offer.

The weekend didn’t start on the right foot however with Jazzy Star missing away yesterday, giving his rivals a huge head start.

He was unable to make up much ground on his race rivals.

The race was also the comeback performance for excitement machine U May Cullect, who had his first run for 12 months after being laid up with injury.

He too however was slightly

Back in Canterbury tonight, the mountainous task in front of One Apollo isn’t lost on White, but he’s also confident he’s got a horse capable of mixing it with the best in the business.

Third up from a spell and backing up from an excellent second at his last appearance, the five-year-old won’t quite yet be at peak fitness, but his trainer

couldn’t be happier with the progression thus far.

“He’s nice and bright and has come through that last run really well.

“We’re on the right track I think,” White said.

“It’s a good field, but I think he’s a pretty good horse and third up tonight he’ll be near enough to peak fitness, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement in him yet too.”

ing last time out, is back in the sulky today and White knows that with the ever-patient horseman pulling the reins, he’s going to be primed for the biggest of occasions.

“I was told that if you put Ricky on and let him do what he thinks is best, then you’ll more than likely end up winning a big race somewhere; he’s very good at getting that good run into them but not knocking them around in the process.”

With Group One performers Sundees Son, Winterfell and Majestic Man all included in tonight’s Group Three contest, One Apollo will need to have a few things to go in his favour in his first real crack at the open class ranks.

“We’ve got a path we want to follow to get us to Cup Week, but he’s going to tell us which is the right way to go.

“He’s a lot stronger this time in and can follow speed really well, so we’re quite confident of having a bit of fun with him, that’s for sure.”

White also lines up the progressive Burlington at Addington tonight, and while stepping up in grade from recent performances, he’s also no forlorn hope.

“I thought his last run was excellent, he had to do a power of work to get onto the speed but kept fighting.

“It’s a step up this week, but we are going to get a line on where we are at with him, so hopefully after this week we can start having a think about a race we want to target.

“There’s a nice one at Kaikoura I’ve got my eye on.”

Capping off a busy week, White will then enjoy a 20-minute drive to the races on Sunday for two chances at Methven, with Rogie Falls and Midfrew Luisianabeau engaged to race on the grass track.

Two changes to Hammers

The challenge might be the same, but Mid Canterbury’s senior rugby coaches Jason Rickard and Dale Palmer are leaving nothing to chance when they trek to Hanmer Springs this weekend to take on Buller.

The second week of the truncated local Heartland competition sees two great rivals locking horns at a neutral venue, and while Mid Canterbury claimed a last-minute draw from their opening clash with neighbours South Canterbury last week in a dogged performance, Rickard and Palmer haven’t shied away from changing things up a little bit.

They’ve made two changes in the starting line up from last week as well as one positional change, with a number of new faces coming onto the bench for the clash tomorrow afternoon.

Southern’s Callum Burrell gets the nod to wear the No.2 jersey ahead of Elama Touli, who will come off the bench. Lote Nasiga, who last week played on the side of the scrum will this week pack down in the tight five at lock alongside Matt Stone.

That gives Evan Blyth a chance to make his debut in the No.6 jersey in what appears a powerhouse forward pack, with Luke Gilbert and Seta Koroitamana joining him in the loose forwards.

The backline, which showed plenty

of cohesion last week, is back in action and unchanged.

On the reserves bench, Hamish Finnie, Jack Harrex, Harry Ashworth and Hugh Griffiths all come into the squad.

Mid Canterbury showed a strong liking for being able to run the ball around a bit last weekend and with Buller traditionally a good side up front, they’ll need to measure up there to enable that to happen.

Rickard and Palmer will be keen to see continued development from their halfback and first-five combination of Tyler Blackburn and Nathan McCloy.

The duo impressed last week in Timaru and could form a solid partnership in the green and gold that continues for many years to come.

In Buller, Mid Canterbury will expect a tough encounter as most clashes between the two sides are. They were able to get over the top of North Otago to win last week 33-31.

The experienced James Lash played a pivotal role in that success and ensuring he’s kept quiet will be a certain key for the Mid Canterbury contingent when they plan how to attack the match.

Novak needs to take it on the chin .... like she did

orry Novak, you have to take your medicine.

It is refreshing and somewhat startling that tennis officials have taken a hard line with one of the game’s household names and sent him to the naughty corner.

As ho-hum or as unintentional as top seed Novak Djokovic’s actions were when he hit a ball in muted frustration only for it to scone a lineswoman who collapsed in a heap, rules are rules.

Grand slam rules ban intentionally hitting a ball dangerously or recklessly within the court, or in a negligent manner.

Yeah she milked it, but that is beside the point.

It was very much an act which falls into this criteria.

Dangerous? Debatable.

Reckless? For sure.

It is a healthy precedent which has been set, not only for tennis, but sport in general.

For too long has the uncivilised behavioural traits of some of tennis’ biggest names become standard practice.

Nick Kyrgios, Serena Williams;

who could forget Martina Hingis’ meltdown in 1999 at Roland Garros?

Or how about the king of the temper tanty John McEnroe?

That’s not to generalise and say all of tennis’ biggest and greatest names have conducted themselves in such a manner.

Roger Federer was once ranked number two behind Nelson Mandela on the Reputation Institute’s study of the world’s most respected, admired and trusted personalities.

For a game which is oh-so-civilised, there have been some boorish incidents and charac-

ters over the years, and tennis itself has been an enabler of this tendency.

Novak’s immediate and ensuing response has been a mix of concern for the Serbian lineswoman – who has reportedly copped heat online – and self-absorbed, overblown platitudes. “This whole situation has left me empty and sad.”

However upon learning he was facing a disqualification it was along the lines of “you’re going to choose a default in this situation? My career, grand slam, centre stage?”

Mid Cantabrian and former All Black, Isaac Ross has found himself embroiled in the middle of a player selection situation in Japan which could spell the end of his playing days in the country.

Ross, who played eight matches for the All Blacks in 2009 as well as representing the Crusaders, Highlanders and Chiefs in Super Rugby, has fallen foul of an obscure Top League rule that has called into question the validity

of his status as a Japanese citizen.

That’s despite having held a Japanese passport since 2017.

The 35-year-old plays out of the Top League club NTT Communications Shining Arcs – but because the rule states that any players who played rugby for a country and acquired a Japanese passport prior to August 31, 2016 is deemed a local player, Ross doesn’t quality and is therefore classed as a foreign player.

Top League teams are measured by a quota of only being able to field any two internationally-capped foreign players at a

time, and with NTT Communications Shining Arcs showing their mettle by chasing players like Springbok Malcolm Marx and Wallaby Christian Lealiifano who played for them in 2020, Ross has been pushed to the outer.

And now the club has decided not to renew his contract.

In an interview with internationally renowned rugby website, Rugbypass.com, Ross revealed that the situation was frustrating for him and his family.

“NTT decided not to renew my contract because I’m an internationally-capped foreigner, and

they’re looking in a different direction, and a lot of other teams have that same mentality,” Ross said in the interview.

“However, they’ve alluded to the fact that if I was Japanese, and if I was able to register as a Japanese player, then that’s a whole different ball game.

“You don’t want to look for the sob story, these times are hard for a lot of people, but that’s the reality for us.

“We’re no longer contracted here in Japan,” he said.

“These guys [the Top League] haven’t announced [if] a rule

change is going to happen, and if they do change, then we’ll have the ability to stay, but if they don’t, then our journey here in Japan is finished.”

Ross is one of only three players in the competition that the rule impacts on.

Top League is yet to confirm whether or not they are looking at changing the rule at any point in the near future, but the clock is ticking fast for the Ashburton-born Ross if he is to be able to play for a country he’s shown great loyalty to over a number of years.
