Ashburton woman Sarah Donald said yesterday she was feeling “nervous” as Hurricane Irma bore down on Fort Lauderdale. The 40-year-old was sheltering in a hotel after being evacuated from South Beach in Miami where she had been on holiday. “This is inland so we are safer here,” she said. Nevertheless, she felt like the hurricane was following her, as it approached on its changing path towards the Florida coastline. Donald said she had been due to fly back to New Zealand on Saturday, but her flight had been cancelled due to the hurricane, and she could not book another. “Every single flight was booked out of Miami and there was lines for gas for miles and now there is no gas left here

anywhere that I have seen.” It was about 10 o’clock Saturday night in the city, and it would be another approximate 11 hours until the hurricane hit fully. However, it was already “on and off” pouring rain and wind, in hot and muggy conditions. “It’s very weird and eerie and there was nobody around in the streets today,” Donald said. “I’m feeling pretty nervous, and can’t sit still as we don’t know what to expect, and the news here is insane and quite terrifying.” One thing she had enjoyed however was meeting all the cats and dogs holed up in the hotel with their humans. The hotel was full of people who had come inland to shelter from the hurricane.
