A group of offenders caught breaking into a Methven business are thought to have been carrying a firearm. Businesses in Rakaia, Methven and Tinwald were broken into in recent days by thieves targeting tobacco products. The Rakaia Four Square on Railway Terrace was hit in the early hours of Wednesday morning, followed by raids on the Methven Mobil Service Station and the town’s SuperValue Supermarket around 4am on Saturday. or whether there was any relationship between them and similar offending in other parts of the district, Tapp said. A number of Christchurch shops have also been targeted by tobacco thieves in recent weeks and police fear the most recent raids in Mid Canterbury could indicate offenders were setting their sights on rural townships. Police are in no doubt the offending is linked to a growing black market for tobacco and have warned it is an offence to buy stolen tobacco products. Tinwald SuperValue Supermarket coowner Paul Thompson knows the pain associated with such offending.
