The job of delivering the news – good and bad – to Ashburton’s four mayoral candidates on Saturday afternoon, will fall to Ashburton District Council chief executive Hamish Riach. When progress election results are forwarded to the council by Electionz. com, Riach will be on the phone, delivering the good news first, congratulating his new mayor. He’ll follow that with calls breaking the less welcome news to the others. their choice, Riach said. “I will offer them a meeting with myself first thing Monday morning, however, it will depend on their preferences and commitments.” The mayor elect, however, cannot officially act as mayor until the final results are declared later in the week. The swearing in ceremony for the mayor and councillors is likely to take place on October 24. “We will, of course seek their view as mayor-elect on any matter that would normally be performed by a mayor, but until they are sworn in, they cannot officially act,” he said. The first progress results, likely to be known early Saturday afternoon. These are based on the count of approximately 98 per cent of returned votes but will
not include some special votes and votes that are cleared from the ballot box in the council’s reception on Saturday morning. Saturday’s ballot box votes are couriered to the vote processing centre in Christchurch and once they have been counted, preliminary results will be issued later in the afternoon. Results will be available on the council’s website www.ashburtondc.govt.nz and a printed result sheet will also be posted on the council’s main door.
