Ashburton residents are still unsure as to what will happen after Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton in the United States 2016 election.

The 45th American president is a wild card and Ashburton residents are unsure what effect he will have on the world or New Zealand. The Ashburton Guardian asked people along Burnett and East streets what

they thought would happen now after Donald Trump won the US election.

There was no telling what would happen with Trump as president but said the potential loss of the Trans Pacific Partnership was not a bad thing. Ashburton resident Daryl Young said he had just come back from Chicago yesterday. Young commended Trump and his campaign. Trump is a successful businessman who has used the media well, he said. People wanted change and Trump would bring it, Young said. “People in the US are over the old-school politicians. “They’re sick of getting nothing.” Young’s son, Ollie, 8, has a different opinion. “He’s a complete psychopath.” Trump will begin his presidency on January 20.

Fairton meatworker Angelo Dayrit is the fastest boner in the Silver Fern Farms network of meat processing plants. Dayrit has been the fastest boner since Silver Fern Farms began its in-house competition four years ago and yesterday at the Canterbury A&P Show he dispatched another challenger, Dan Barclay of the Waitane plant in Gore. The pair faced off in front of spectators and farmers in the Silver Fern Farms tent, ahead of the annual presentation of the Bel-

fast Cup, won last year by Omagh Farms of Ashburton. Company spokesman Justin Courtney said the pair were the two best boners over all the plants. “They do an important job on the chain where speed, accuracy and quality are important.” And so was a very sharp knife. In the contest yesterday, Dayrit finished his carcase several minutes ahead of Barclay. Fairton plant manager Dylan Marsh said boners had 30 minutes to process one carcase as part of their job on the chain, with 60 per cent of the lamb

packed into a box as boneless meat. About 30 per cent of cuts are exported to the United Kingdom, 20 per cent to Europe and the rest to the United States and Middle East. “These guys do this day in and day out, they are the best in the company. You will not see anyone go this fast, this clean on any day at work. “They are exceptional.” Dayrit is in his ninth season as a boner at Fairton, while Barclay is in his fifth. The two carcases boned before the crowd were lambs from the second and third place-getters in

the Belfast Cup, which requires farmers to supply 30 lambs of a consistent quality for processing on the same day earlier this month. Courtney said the competition, which has been running since 1934, was its strongest ever with 15 farmers encouraged to enter by their livestock rep. All the lambs were judged by the head grader at Fairton. The cup went this year to Dave Clark of Rangiora, while runnersup were Martin and Maree Bush of Mid Canterbury, who were encouraged to enter by their livestock rep Simon Eddington.

Rodeos will not be banned The Parklee Bullride at the Central Hawke’s Bay A&P Show today is set to go ahead after the Government announced rodeos would not be banned. A petition led by animal welfare groups was supported by 62,000 New Zealanders to express their concerns about the cruelty of animals. North Island Rodeo Club director, Shane Bird, said the Government had clearly looked at the petition and made the decision to take no action so it was business as usual. “We are governed by the rules of the National Animal Welfare Committee (NAWC) and by sticking to these rules we are not being cruel to animals. We are doing exactly what they tell us.” – NZME

Ashburton College chooses its head students By Noah Graham

Samantha McArthur had a belter of a night as she pocketed scores of awards, the Year 12 top student award and became Ashburton College’s 2017 head girl alongside Nic Thomassen who was awarded head boy, Wednesday night. Fellow school students, family and teachers applauded Thomassen and McArthur as they stepped on to the podium and gave their first speeches to their peers as head boy and girl. Thomassen is looking forward to what he and McArthur can bring to the role next year and said the shoes they will fill are big ones. He thanked his mum and dad for pushing him to go for the role, but it was his nana, who passed away last year, that inspired him to go for the position. McArthur had not expected to be named head girl or to get the top student award and it was a “very proud moment” for her. “I didn’t think I was capable of achieving it,” she said. McArthur did not start the year aiming to be head girl or to claim the top student award, she just did everything to the best of her ability. Along with her prestigious titles, McArthur also walked away with nine other awards. McArthur said she will celebrate her achievements, but will get

back into studying for her exams soon, which start next Tuesday.

Ashburton River still unsafe to swim By Sue NewmaN

The Ashburton River remains the single black spot on the district’s swim spot map. Looking ahead to summer, Environment Canterbury has released its latest ratings of Canterbury’s swimming spots and the river at the State Highway 1 bridge continues to earn itself a rating of very poor. It has consistently achieved the lowest score over the past six years.

Its potential sources of faecal contamination are listed as high density of birdlife, drainage from rural and urban land use, discharge from upstream tributaries influenced by high intensity agriculture and rural activities. The river’s bad report card, however, is balanced by each of the district’s other swimming spots monitored by ECan receiving good ratings. Lake Hood’s Bayliss Beach was ranked as very good in terms

of swimming safety although the main swimming beach has dropped to only fair. This means it is generally satisfactory for swimming although there are many potential sources of faecal material. The main source of contamination is given as a stream draining low intensity agricultural land. If you want to be sure your swimming spot is safe from contaminants, head to the district’s inland lakes. Both Lake Clearwater, west of the huts settlement,

and the main swimming beach at Lake Camp have scored a quality ranking of very good. For both, the only possible source of contamination is run-off from low intensity land use. Across Canterbury 52 of the most popular swimming sites are monitored, with 12 of those showing an improvement in water quality over the past year. Only one showed a decline. In its report, ECan says the improvement shows that landown-

ers have been proactive in excluding stock from streams and have protected those streams and rivers on their properties by planting and fencing. ECan, however, recognised that the region had some way to go in cleaning up the waterways, said surface water science manager Tim Davie. Swimming spots are from November to March and over the past 10 years water quality has either been stable or improving.

High country fete to open its gate The fete business is about to hit Mid Canterbury when the gates open on the inaugural Methven High Country Fete. Eighty stallholders from across the South Island are bringing their wares to the Methven Racecourse for an event that is designed to be both a great day out as well as a fundraiser for three Methven charities. Those stalls will include jewellery and accessories, homewares,

women’s and baby wear, art and crafts, garden and furniture, beauty products, jams, salami, seasonings and fudge. “We have something for everyone. “We’ve even got Christmas covered, with great gift ideas, cakes and treats,” said co-organiser Julie Sergeant. A range of sweet and savoury food will also be available and to wash it all down, fine wines and

Senior college students tackle NCEA exams By Noah Graham

More than 6000 Ashburton school students will have butterflies in their stomachs for the next few weeks as they began their National Certificate of Educational Achievement exams yesterday. NCEA level 1 English, level 2 Spanish and scholarship English were the first exams to be sat by Ashburton students yesterday morning and were followed by level 2 earth and space science and level 3 biology in the afternoon. Ashburton College Year 11 student Mickayla Milmine, 16, had finished her English exam yesterday afternoon, the first of five she will sit this year. It was hard, but Milmine thought she had done “all right”. She said it was a “step-up” from last year and certainly felt the nerves. More than 2900 Year 11 students from Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College will sit their English and maths exams this year along with the sciences and their chosen subjects. The Year 12 students will also sit the exams en masse with more than 1900 taking the three-hour long test along with more than 1100 Year 13 students. Ashburton College principal’s nominee Mary Buckland said a lot of students felt the nerves of the NCEA exams and usually think they have done worse than they actually had. She said as long as they had

prepared well they would get the marks they wanted. The final exams will finish on

December 2 with level 1 art history, level 2 drama and level 3 social studies closing things off.

Cost likely to be significant Government and experts are starting to count the potential cost of a Donald Trump Presidency to New Zealand’s climate change commitments, its defence ties, and even its core values. Another immediate concern is Trump’s threat to pull the United States out of the landmark Paris Agreement, which binds 195 countries to preventing global temperatures from rising by more than 1.5°C before 2100. Climate Change Minister Paula Bennett said yesterday such a move would be “a real shame” given US leadership on the issue and its responsibility for a large proportion of global emissions. “It would be a big deal, quite frankly, if any of the big emitters pulled out,” Bennett said. Former Prime Minister Sir Geoffrey Palmer went further, saying a Paris Agreement without the US would “spell disaster” for global efforts to prevent runaway climate change. Trump has previously spoken about climate change being a “hoax” and says he wants the United States to rebuild its coal industry, against the warnings of scientists who say most fossil

Trump has criticised the US’ traditional allies and others for not pulling their weight on international affairs and defence. Of greater concern was the broader movement which Trump was a part of, including Brexit, which challenges the open, tolerant democratic system which New Zealand belongs to. “This is the big concern, that the fabric of domestic and international society as we know it – that’s not so sure anymore,” Ayson said. “Bit by bit the commitments to these values and to these ways of doing things politically are being chipped away. “That’s the thing that bothers me and that’s not good for New Zealand at all.” Parliament passed a motion to congratulate Trump on his election victory yesterday. Young couple blown away The winners of Wednesday night’s $44 million Powerball draw had just about given up on being able to buy their first home when one of them discovered they’d won during a break at work. The young couple from Auckland’s Hibiscus Coast claimed their winnings yesterday. “I was at work this morning on smoko break and decided to check our ticket,” said one of the winners. “I saw that I had three numbers in a row, so I quickly checked that I had the Powerball number and then went back and checked the rest of the numbers,” he said. “As soon as I saw I had all the numbers on one line I just yelled ‘holy ****!’ – my boss thought I’d chopped my arm off with a saw.” He quickly jumped in his car and headed to a nearby Lotto store to officially check his ticket, busily trying to phone his wife the whole way there. “As I was driving to the store, they were talking about the big win on the radio and I started screaming out ‘that’s me!’” When he finally got through to his wife at work she had trouble

believing that it was real. “I saw a couple of missed calls from him and I thought something was up. I picked up the phone and said ‘babe, are you ok?’” the winner’s wife said. “He said ‘we won’. At first I thought he was joking, but he managed to convince me. My head started spinning, my heart was racing and I got the shakes.” The couple visited Lotto NZ’s head office on Thursday afternoon to claim their prize in person. “As we sat in the winner’s room, he kept turning to me and

saying ‘Am I in a dream?’ and I kept turning to him and saying ‘is this real?’” she said. “I just wish I could have seen his face when he found out we’d won.” The couple are regular Lotto players who sometimes play their own numbers and sometimes play with a Dip ticket, and the win couldn’t have come at a better time for the couple, who have a young family. “We’ve been busting our guts trying to buy our first home,” the husband said. “We just went to the mortgage broker earlier this week to see

what they could do to help. But they just couldn’t make anything work for us. “We were absolutely gutted and I just said ‘maybe that ship has sailed’. “But my wife tried to stay positive and said ‘don’t worry, something good will happen for us’. “I don’t think either of us thought that the something good would be $44 million.” The couple are still trying to process the win, which just feels “unbelievable” and is going to change their lives “epically”. “We’re definitely going to have a couple drinks last night to celebrate,” he said. With $44 million arriving in their bank account, the couple have a lot of decisions to make about how to spend their money. “We want to be really smart about how we manage this money, so we’re going to take our time. We just can’t believe how lucky we are,” the wife said. “All we know at the moment is that we’re going to give the kids a really great Christmas this year.” The couple will continue working and want to remain anonymous. - NZME

American has ‘Trumpression’ Amanda Richards has been shedding tears throughout the day as she suffers from Trumpression. Originally from America but living in New Zealand for about seven years, Richards spent a tearful evening in JJ Murphy’s pub in Wellington on Wednesday night as the election results rolled in. Yesterday was not much better for the Clinton supporter. “It was a pretty long, rough day and I definitely shed some tears at work.” She won’t be the only one feeling devastated, with a psychologist confirming Trumpression is a real phenomenon. Richards said co-workers, including non-Americans, had been coming to her throughout the day to see how she was doing with news Trump won the US presidency. “I think we need one day or mourning and then I think it’s time to start working towards making things better.” But Richards didn’t expect to stay in her state of depression forever. “I tend to be a very positive person. I think that pouring my despair into activism is the only way to get through. I think that a week from now I will feel more focused on the work that needs to be done.” - NZME

He offered a voice to voiceless James Ford

It happened. Despite the media and elite’s best efforts, Donald Trump will become America’s 45th president. The result was one that most would not have expected, particularly those firmly in Hillary Clinton’s corner. But the reaction has been one that I, personally, fully anticipated. And it is the nature of this reaction that fuelled many to vote against the political norms. When checking my Facebook timeline yesterday morning it offered a perfect microcosm of my demographic. There were hundreds of posts damning the election result. Condemning those that voted for Trump while undermining something that we should all hold in high regard; democracy. The reason for Trump’s rise to power is clear. When blue collar people feel disenfranchised and unheard, they vote against the system. Neither candidate stood out, but one was astute enough to appeal to the average American. While Hillary was polished and articulate, Trump was brash and bombastic. Hillary followed the standard mould that we’ve all become accustomed to, while Trump tore up the playbook. Love him or loath him, Trump has changed American politics forever. Somehow, he became the voice of the voiceless and brought into question the ways of previous political dynasties. Yet now we have those, particularly of a middle class background, jeering and questioning the result. It is this lack of respect and condescending nature that contributed to the 2016 US election outcome. Brexit offered the perfect prelude. Those that felt they weren’t being listened to reacted in the only way they felt their voices would be heard. Earlier in the campaign Hillary labelled Trump supporters as “deplorable”. It was an aggressive description of those that she hoped to one day lead. In the end, she was punished for failing to identify the real plights of her fellow, less fortunate Americans. There were warnings throughout, but the powerful refused to entertain the idea that this day would come. That those that have been ignored would turn out in force for a man with no political experience. We can hashtag and meme all we want, but Trump will still be president-elect in the morning.

YOUR VIEW Mayfield water I write in response to David O’Neill’s letter to the Press paper printed on Thursday regarding the provision of domestic water to the Mayfield township. Firstly, the printed picture is not of a stockwater canal, but is of the Rangitata Diversion Race that has been providing water into Mid Canterbury for irrigation, stockwater and hydrogeneration for over 70 years. Some residents in the local area use the stockwater for domestic supply as access to groundwater has either been unavailable or uneconomic. We get the water quality in the canal independently tested monthly for contaminants, such as E.Coli as well as nitrates and phosphorus and it is recognised to be of high quality with very low levels of contaminants consistent with alpine river water. The Mayfield township was supplied by treated stockwater until 2011 when a community decision was taken to switch to an existing groundwater bore. This bore along with many others across Canterbury is showing a reduction in water levels. It is too simplistic to lay blame for declining water levels on irrigation however as the root cause is the significant lack of recharge from rain, particularly over the winter months in the last three years. It is prudent contingency planning on behalf of the Ashburton District Council to investigate possible alternate sources of water for the residents of Mayfield. ’m sitting gathering my thoughts on the Donald Trump victory and the number one thing that comes to mind is “I’m so glad it’s over”. I am a little nervous about some of the dumb things he’s said in the past. I am concerned about our trade relationship with the United States, but was pleased to hear him say he was willing to work with other nations who were willing to work with him. I like the fact he has backed himself and is not a puppet for Wall Street and others with money. I liked a lot of what he said on Wednesday night in his victory speech, like, “Now it’s time for Americans to bind the wounds of division, we have to get together. To all Republicans, Democrats and Independents across the nation, I say it is time for us to come together as one united people. I will be president to all Americans and this is so important to me”. Now Donald it is time to walk the walk. We probably shouldn’t be so surprised, Trump’s victory was predicted back in 2000. No it wasn’t a documentary on the History Channel. It was on that great source of information, The Simpsons. In an episode called Bart to the Future, Bart has a reverie of his life as a 40-year-old adult. In the vision, his sister Lisa Simpson is the country’s first “straight female” president. In one scene, Bart visits her in the Oval Office where she’s conducting a meeting about the country’s current economic status. “As you know, we’ve inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump,” she tells her staff as they realise the economy is in a complete decline. “The country is broke! How could that be?” she adds before Bart storms through the office doors. I asked my facebook family for their one word reaction to the news of Trump’s victory. Trump elicits fears, cheers World leaders struggled yesteresday to come to grips with a new reality – Donald Trump will be the next US president – and an as yet unanswerable question: How many of his campaign pledges will he actually act on? The remarkable triumph of the politically untested businessman was welcomed in some countries, such as Russia, while in others it was a major shock. When Trump takes office in January, world leaders will confront a man whose stated views represent a sharp break with US foreign policy orthodoxy. He has cosied up to Russian President Vladimir Putin, warned stunned Nato allies they will have to pay for their own protection, floated a ban on Muslims entering the US and vowed to make the Mexican government finance a multibillion-dollar border wall. These changes, and others, have the potential to radically remake US policy – a prospect that has given stability-loving partners a cascading case of the jitters. Trump’s victory was hailed in Russia, which has taken an increasingly aggressive stance toward the West in recent months. Putin sent Trump a congratulatory telegram yesterday and made a televised statement expressing the hope that frayed US-Russian relations could be put back on track. “We are aware that it is a difficult path, in view of the unfortunate degradation of relations between the Russian Federation and the United States,” the Russian leader

Kim traumatised Kim Kardashian West has seen a therapist every day since she was gagged and robbed at gunpoint in Paris last month. The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star has been having daily counselling sessions to help her get over the incident because she keeps experiencing flashbacks and nightmares. A source told Us Weekly magazine: “She’s [Kim has] been having nightmares and flashbacks. She’s talking to a therapist every day, usually via Skype, phone or in person.” The 36-year-old beauty is refusing to leave her home which she shares with her husband and their two children. Trump’s win also caused trepidation in Mexico, where his remarks calling Mexican immigrants criminals and “rapists” were a deep insult to national pride. Trump has suggested slapping a 35 per cent tax on automobiles and auto parts made by US companies in Mexico, and financial analysts have predicted a Trump win will threaten billions of dollars in cross-border trade. Trump’s victory is “as close to a national emergency as Mexico has faced in many decades,” Mexican analyst Alejandro Hope said. - AP

Nathanaelle Bernard was two months short of the due date for her first child when Hurricane Matthew crashed through her town overlooking the Caribbean Sea along Haiti’s southwestern coast. The storm, with its 145mph winds, destroyed her small home of cinder blocks. Powerful waves carried away most of her belongings, including the clothing and blankets she had managed to collect for her baby. She’s now anxiously awaiting the birth amid the ruins of her town, with even food and fresh water scarce. “I always had this dream my child wouldn’t want for anything,” the 19-year-old said on a recent morning, her face glowing with sweat as she cradled her swollen belly. Syrian activists are blaming the US-led coalition for an early morning airstrike yesterday that killed at least 20 civilians in a part of Syria held by the Islamic State group. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 20 people were killed and around 30 wounded in the strike on the village of Heisha. The village is north of the extremist group’s de facto capital, Raqqa. A local media collective said 23 civilians were killed. US Col. John Dorrian, a spokesman for the US-led forces, said the coalition had conducted strikes in the area but could not confirm whether there were civilian casualties. “More information is needed to conclusively determine responsibility,” he said. The international force is flying dozens of sorties in the region in support of a US-backed push by Syrian Kurdish forces on Raqqa. The Kurdish-led Syria Democratic Forces say they have committed 30,000 fighters to the offensive. - AAP

‘It’s time to live’ Paul Henry says Duncan Garner has one foot in his grave already, but he’s happy to let him have it. Henry took to Facebook to thank his fans and explain the reason he’s leaving, citing simply being over 2.30am alarms. “We have done amazing things, I have loved being a huge part of this show,” he says. “You guys have been fantastic because as I’ve said multiple times: if it weren’t for you this whole thing would just be a joke. It’s been fantastic but it’s been hard work and I just can’t keep getting up in the middle of the night,” Henry said.

Brand’s daughter Mabel Russell Brand has named his newborn daughter Mabel. The 41-year-old comedian and his fiancée Laura Gallacher welcomed their little girl into the world and, although they want to raise her as a gender neutral, have picked out the sweet moniker for her. The funny man told the audience at his gig at the Nottingham Playhouse, East Midlands, over the weekend that he had to rush off after the show to get back to Laura and their new baby. Fan Daniel Crann, 29, said: “He didn’t confirm if it was a girl or a boy. He was conscious of the clock and made sure he was off stage by 9pm as he ‘needed to get down the M21 as my girlfriend has just had a baby’.”

Bid to entice US ‘refugees’

Big families in Auckland are among those being asked to fork out almost $1.5m for a new home. $897,300, up 2.9 per cent in October, or 13.2 per cent, $104,850 in the last 12 months. While prices continued to rise, Harcourts’ latest analysis of the Auckland market showed it sold 499, of the 742 properties listed in October, for an average sale price of $919,966 - down 4.7 per cent from the previous month. However, this was up 2.2 per cent on the 488 sold in October 2015.

The real estate company said this indicated the market remained strong, but was not moving ahead with the force and speed of 12 months ago. Harcourts CEO Chris Kennedy said there was good choice in the market for those looking to buy. “Houses at the higher end of the spectrum continue to achieve very good prices, driving up the average, however, there has been a flattening at the

mid to lower end. He said sellers needed to be more discerning about the ways in which they marketed and presented their properties to buyers. The Trade Me figures showed nationwide average asking prices were also continuing to rise, up 2.9 per cent, or more than $17,000 last month – to a new high of $618,000. This was up 8.1 per cent, or more than $46,000 compared to the same period last year. Jeffries said after a bit of a sluggish winter the market had “spluttered back to life” in time for spring. “It’s been a familiar story recently, with new price records being broken almost every month and over $46,000 dollars has been added to sellers’ expectations over the last year.” According to Trade Me six regions around the country hit record highs in October – a fact Jeffries attributed to the “Auckland effect”. He said the term was used to describe the effect the city’s growing property market had on the regions. - NZME

Futures dropped off significantly, with the Dow Jones futures falling almost 800 points. It looked like investors were in for a bumpy ride. Gold prices jumped higher, as did the Japanese yen, both of which are considered safe haven assets and favoured in times of volatility. The wild ride continued as Donald Trump was announced as the new President elect. However, as Trump gave his victory speech, markets seemed to calm, as the rhetoric from the campaign was gone and the nation was faced with a calm, sensible and humble leader. European markets were able to pare back opening losses to close in positive territory, and US markets also rallied, with particularly strong runs for healthcare and financial stocks. The biggest news on the local calendar was the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s meeting, held on Thursday. As was expected the RBNZ cut the official cash rate by a further 25 basis points to a new all-time low of 1.75 per cent. Governor Graeme Wheeler’s statement acknowledged that there has been an improvement in economic conditions globally although said there was still

surplus capacity. The low global interest rates are keeping upward pressure on the New Zealand dollar and this was a key reason for the rate cut. In addition, inflation remains stubbornly high, which added weight to the case for an OCR cut. Monetary policy will continue to be accommodative in New Zealand as uncertainties remain, in particular, political instability and heightened market volatility. However, it seems like this is likely to be the last cut to the OCR we will see as the RBNZ’s current projections and assumptions indicate current monetary policy settings will see growth strong enough to get inflation to settle near the middle of the target range. Although the biggest political event of the final quarter for the year has taken place, there are still plenty more events to keep investors on their toes. These include the Italian constitutional referendum, the European Central Bank meeting and the US Federal Reserve meeting, all due in December. In conjunction with this, there is still a long road ahead for the new US President elect as he chooses those he wants to work with closely and announces his actual policies. All of these events face their own challenges and have the potential to cause plenty of volatility for markets.

US election takes centre stage arkets focus this week was the US elections, which after months of campaigning were finally upon us. In what has been a scandalous and mixed campaign period, the surprises continued right until the very end. Polling leading up to voting day indicated that, although it would be close, Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee, would emerge the victor. However, this was not to be. Results began to trickle in from lunchtime Wednesday New Zealand time, starting on the east coast as polls began to close. What started out as an even race, quickly changed and by 3pm, results started to favour Republican candidate Donald Trump. This sent shockwaves throughout financial markets and saw massive declines in share prices across New Zealand, Australia and Asia. As the swing states were declared to be won by Trump, it became clear that the 45th President of the United States of America would be Donald Trump. This is being viewed by political pundits as a vote against the status quo and in support of the anti-establishment movement, in much the same way as we saw in the UK with the Brexit vote. Also in the same vein as Brexit, pre-vote polling for the election proved to be completely wrong, leaving many questioning the validity of these. The NZX50 declined 3.34 per cent on Wednesday in what was one the index’s biggest ever sell downs. All components on the NZX50 finished the session in

Kiwi software company Xero is looking to bring some American “refugees” to New Zealand in the wake of the US election. Company chief executive Rod Drury sent out a note to his staff yesterday expressing his surprise and concern at the Donald Trump victory. “Most concerning is the divisive rhetoric over the campaign, which may have been a cynical and planned strategy to win,” he said. “We are actively looking to bring some refugees into our Wellington office as an example. “As the world becomes more tribal, our global community and purpose should be an example to all.” He said the company would help people to make the move to New Zealand - “just because we like to hang out with y’all”. Wellington-based business incubator Creative HQ is also encouraging Americans to head down under. “Disappointed by the election results? Big families in Auckland are among those being asked to fork out almost $1.5m for a new home as the price of a five-bedroom property has more than doubled within the last decade. A big house in the City of Sails, with five or more bedrooms, would cost more than double the average asking price than it would have eight years ago - a record breaking figure of $1.45m. These figures released by Trade Me showed this was more than twice the asking price of just under $700,000 in 2008. Head of Trade Me Property, Nigel Jeffries said in the last 12 months the average asking price of a 5-bedroom property had sky-rocketed by almost $230,000, up 18.7 per cent in the past 12 months alone. For singletons, couples, or retirees looking to downsize, the price of a small unit in Auckland had also soared within the last decade - to $612,550, almost double the average asking price of $304,600 in 2009. Across all properties, average asking prices in Auckland had also risen to a new high of

Out on the Street

H

undreds of thousands gather in London’s prestigious shopping street to enjoy the best on four (and occasionally three and two) wheels Motoring enthusiasts, shoppers and Londoners savoured a sunny but chilly Regent Street last Saturday to discover the capital’s Mile of Style had been turned into a time machine for the day. Central London’s celebrated shopping destination was closed to traffic from Oxford Circus to Piccadilly Circus, but it was still filled with cars…. cars from the past, present and future all taking part in the annual free-to-view Regent Street Motor Show, a Royal Automobile Club event. Rubbing shoulders with more than 100 veteran cars from the dawn of motoring were dozens of cars of tomorrow – low and zero emission battery-powered electric vehicles and hybrids. The veterans, all built before 1905, were taking part in their annual International Concours d’Elegance prior to setting off at dawn on Sunday for the trip from London to Brighton in the famous Bonhams Veteran Car run. The overall winner was the sole surviving Krastin, one of just four cars believed to have been built by the innovative Latvian immigrant August Krastin in Cleveland, Ohio before fire completely destroyed his factory and the company

was forced into bankruptcy. Turn the clock forward more than a 100 years and, hearing stories that one car might still be in existence, Latvian enthusiast Austra Priede tracked it down to an address in Nebraska and with the help of the Riga Motor Museum, has just completed a full restoration in time for this surviving and significant Krastin to make its debut in this year’s Veteran Car Run.

While the veterans turned the clock back as far as the late 19th century, another part of the show remembered 1976, the year when Britain’s James Hunt won the F1 World Championship. Not only was Hunt’s McLaren’s M23 on display so too was Hunt himself… in the shape of James’ son Freddie, who bears an uncanny resemblance to his father. Freddie, who shares the same shock of blond hair

as his Dad, was on hand to pose for photographs and sign autographs. The McLaren was not the only F1 car on display as visitors could ogle at the scarlet 1961 Ferrari Dino 246 F1 racer – the last front-engined car to win a Grand Prix – centre piece of a display promoting the Silverstone Classic, the world’s biggest classic motor racing event. Motoring’s classic years were represented by displays from the Jaguar Drivers’ Club, with sports cars including the XK140, E-type, XJ220 and current F-type. Fans of more obscure classics enjoyed a display of ultra-rare British-built Piper sports cars, while the BBC Children in Need charity showed off the vintage buses ready to follow the veterans to Brighton. Bringing the motoring story up to date were displays of modern cars and bikes from companies including Mini, Renault and Triumph. Go Ultra Low and Transport for London joined forces to look to the future by offering drives in a wide range of contemporary battery-powered electric vehicles from manufacturers including Renault, Audi, BMW, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen. The Regent Street Motor Show, which was first staged in 2005, regularly attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors and this year was no different. Last year the event drew a record 450,000 attendance and this year’s show was just as popular.

rmstrong Prestige’s Christchurch Mercedes Benz showroom is just like being in a decent-sized motor show! For there’s usually at least one model, sometimes two of the large and varied range to be seen. Today’s story is about the latest E220d, which sits between the four cylinder turbo-petrol E200 and the 190kW, 620Nm twin-turbo diesel V6 E350d in the new E-Class range. All come with such an array of the very latest and totally impressive driver assistance and safety technology (even more than the flagship S-Class) that I could easily fill my word quota, just writing about these, so I’ll come back to that. Looks-wise, the car, which is lighter but stronger, with a longer wheelbase, is unmistakably a Mercedes. It has a subtly impressive look, which perhaps was even more so for the test car, with its special silver paint ($1990), the 20-inch wheels and other highlights of the $6300 AMG package. Power for the 220d is provided by a new, and very efficient 2.0-litre four cylinder turbo-diesel. It proved to be impressively quiet, decidedly frugal (claimed 4.1L/100km), a very relaxed cruiser yet a quick, effortless overtaker.

All this happens because there’s 400Nm of torque (pulling power) on call from just 1600rpm, and a very proactive, but totally seamless shifting, nine-speed auto making the most of this. And that’s in the Comfort mode setting, with Sport and Sport+, which progressively change both the engine’s and auto’s responses as well as the steering and the suspension still to try! But in Comfort the car handles so neatly and precisely through corners, and with so much grip from the Pirelli P Zero tyres it feels more like you are behind the wheel of the smaller A-250 Sport rather than a large executive car. I expect many owners, while knowing they can if they want to dial up the Sports modes, will be very satisfied with what happens in Comfort. Around town the steering is light, easy to use and the turning circle impressively tight. At speed the steering progressively firms up. In some instances, because of the suspension’s slightly firm set-up, the irregularities of around town streets can be noticed, but never uncomfortably so. In this respect, I understand the optional $3900 air suspension delivers an amazingly smooth ride, on all surfaces. You expect, and get, both a real

sense of occasion, and a fine, comprehensive array of high-tech fittings in the spacious, inviting cabin. The dash information is presented on two large (12.3-inch), very impressive digital displays. While the high-tech stuff continues with the ability to even change the colours, appearances and presentation of these by touch-pads on the steering wheel, there’s logically placed buttons and a touch-pad/rotary controller for the many functions that show on these screens. Standard gear includes sat-nav, dualzone climate air, electric adjusting front seats with memory, rain-sensing wipers, key-less entry/start, a surroundview camera, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, internet access etc. But interestingly enough the test car’s heated front seats were a $900 extra. Plus it also came with the $4990 Vision

package which added the full length panoramic glass sunroof, heads-up display, and 13-speaker Burmester 590 watt surround sound system. The result being that while you are kept very well informed as you enjoy the excellent combination of the driving position, the seating and sound system, you can also change the dash presentation and colours to suit your mood. Meanwhile they in the spacious rear seats, which as expected have individual ventilation and power outlets, will also be more than happy. There’s also plenty of space (530 litres) in the well-shaped, easy to load boot for four on tour. And now, here’s an all-to-brief partsummary of the very latest in very smart, semi-autonomous safety technology and driver assist features on board as standard features of the car. X-factor on wheels F ive young drivers, including Ashburton’s Job Quantock, have been selected to compete for the inaugural Hyundai NZ Young Driver Shootout and Scholarship, a programme developed between Kiwi world rally star Hayden Paddon and Hyundai New Zealand. The collaboration aims to give a young New Zealand rally driver a major step-up with their motorsport career aspirations as well as providing the scholarship winner with the opportunity to drive the Hyundai NZ AP4 i20 rally car run by Paddon Rallysport in two rounds of the 2017 New Zealand Rally Championship, testing and training with Paddon, plus the potential for an expanded programme in 2018. From more than 180 applicants, the following five drivers were selected as finalists for the December shootout weekend where they will participate with the co-driver of their choice: · Max Bayley, 20, Hawke’s Bay · Sloan Cox, 24, Rotorua · Job Quantock, 22, Ashburton · Matt Summerfield, 24, Rangiora · Dylan Thomson, 21, Waiuku Paddon says: “We were all blown away by the interest and sheer quality of applications – some

really good people missed out this time. “It made our job really difficult to narrow it down to five finalists, but it’s a sure sign how much our sport of rallying is growing and it’s great that Hyundai New Zealand can help us to continue that growth with this scholarship.” Running near Auckland over the weekend of December 9-10, the Hyundai NZ Young Driver Shootout includes lessons and assessments on fitness, how to identify and look after sponsors, nutrition, media presence, career planning, writing pace notes and car set-up. In brief Smith ‘will be a great’ Former Australian cricket captain Bill Lawry has backed incumbent Steve Smith and rates David Warner as one of the best opening batsmen of his lifetime. Like Warner, Lawry was a successful and prolific left-handed test opener, but stylistically they’re polar opposites. A dour and obdurate accumulator, Lawry averaged 47.15 over 67 tests, while rapid scoring strokeplayer Warner averages 48.98 after 55 tests. “Smith will be a great captain, he’s a super young player and he’ll do well,” Lawry said. - AAP

Meanwhile, Lauriston held on to secure an opening day victory over Methven in last weekend’s opposite fixture.

After losing the toss, Lauriston were sent into bat in challenging conditions but openers Scott Morgan (59) and Bevan Ravenscroft’s astute batting display saw the home side through to 60 without loss at drinks. Alex Hooper also managed the surface well to record 30 not out as Lauriston eventually posted 164 for 8 from their allotted overs.

Cook stepping down? Alastair Cook has indicated the current test series against India could be his last as England captain. Thrust into the test cricket cauldron at a young age, former South African captain Graeme Smith admires the way new Proteas pace sensation Kagiso Rabada has handled the same challenge. Rabada stepped up magnificently when pace spearhead Dale Steyn was injured during this week’s test win over Australia in Perth. He took 5-92 off 31 overs in the second innings and seven wickets for the game to earn the man-of-the-match award. It was a fourth five wicket haul in just nine tests for the 21-year-old test speedster. He played his first senior international at 19 and like Smith has been given plenty of responsibility at a young age. Smith, who made his test debut at 21 and started his captaincy tenure in his ninth match just over a year later, described Rabada’s performance in Perth as incredible. “You don’t ever want to put that pressure on a young man but I got given the captaincy at 22 so I understand about being thrust

Bambino Blacks to face Italy By GreGor Paul As expected, New Zealand have made a heavy investment in youth for their clash with Italy, selecting a side that could easily enough fit the moniker Bambino Blacks. Sam Cane will have his second taste of the captaincy in a side that has an average age of 25 and an average of 22 caps. As a contrast, the All Blacks team that took the field in the last World Cup final had an average age of 29 and an average of 65 caps per player. Three of that 2015 team – Richie McCaw, Dan Carter and Ma’ Nonu – had between them more caps than the entire starting XV that will play Italy at Stadio Olimpico on Sunday morning. This is one of the youngest and least experienced All Blacks teams in almost a decade and one whose potential clearly excites head coach Steve Hansen. There are 12 changes from the team that started against Ireland – Cane, Patrick Tuipulotu and Waisake Naholo are the only survivors as the priority this week is partly being driven by the need to rest a handful of senior players ahead of what will certainly be demanding tests against Ireland and France. There are two new caps on the bench – Rieko Ioane and Liam Coltman – and there are second appearances for Scott Barrett at lock and Damian McKenzie at fullback.

Steven Luatua is recalled at No 8 for his first start in two years and both he and Elliot Dixon, who will win his third cap on the blindside, have been asked to show their physicality and aggression. With Tawera Kerr-Barlow and Aaron Cruden providing playmaking guidance, there are steady hands on the tiller and Israel Dagg will offer a strong voice in the back three. “There was always going to be regardless of what happened in Chicago,” said All Blacks coach Steve Hansen. “It is that time of year – if we don’t make changes we are going to run out of petrol and it is an opportunity for some people to tell us what they have got at this level. “The midfield is probably a little different because we don’t have many options there but pretty much yes it is the team we always planned to pick.” The inclusion of LeinertBrown, McKenzie and Ioane means the three youngest men in the tour party are all going to be involved. Leinert-Brown has established in his six tests so far that he is cut out for this level and Hansen is hoping that McKenzie and Ioane can do the same, because as well as being the youngest, these two possess outrageous talent. Rookies get their chances for Kiwis By Michael BurGess In the space of 30 seconds yesterday, Kiwis utility Te Maire Martin went from despair to destiny. Martin was named to make his test debut against Scotland on Saturday (NZT), but not before a practical joke from coach David Kidwell. The 21-year-old was on his way to breakfast at the team hotel when he was pulled aside by Kidwell. “He had a little joke about it at the start,” said Martin. “He said ‘sorry Te, I can’t play you this week’. I dropped my head and was a bit gutted. “Then he paused, started laughing and said ‘No, I’m chucking you in’. My stomach dropped for a while but then I started laughing afterwards.” The Penrith utility admitted he was hoping to get the nod for the final Four Nations pool match, after watching the previous three tests from the grandstand. “I thought I might have got a run this week but when he told me my heart dropped ... though I didn’t mind too much,” said Martin.

Te Maire Martin will make his test debut for the Kiwis tomorrow.

“I’m enjoying the ride, being around the big boys and learning as much as I can. “It’s been surreal to be in the team and train alongside people that I look up to. I hope it goes alright on [Saturday].” Martin, who made his NRL debut in round three before injuring his shoulder six games later, is likely to be introduced on Saturday when Issac Luke is spelled. Leuluai will take over the hooking role while Martin will pair up with Shaun Johnson in the halves.

Martin is one of four rookies named in the team, with Warriors utility David Fusitua to start on the wing, and Raiders lock Joseph Tapine and Penrith second rower James Fisher-Harris joining Martin on the interchange bench. The other change sees Dallin Watene-Zelezniak at fullback, in place of Jordan Kahu. Kidwell’s selection is a bit risky, but probably a gamble worth taking. It will give him a chance to see the young players in action, which otherwise may not have occurred until at least

the Anzac test next year. It’s still a strong team, and the presence of Watene-Zelezniak and Fusitua does nothing to diminish the attacking strike of the side. And the youthful energy and enthusiasm of the introduced quintet will lift the Kiwis, after two physical encounters with England and Australia in the space of eight days. The only concern will be combinations, especially on defence, with a new back three and different players on each edge. But there is enough experience around the young players, who have all impressed at various times in the NRL this season. But they’ll need to perform, for a Kiwis team that have to win, and win well. They’ll face tough conditions – there was snow on the hills on the journey into Cumbria yesterday – and a parochial crowd cheering on the Bravehearts. Scotland were extremely impressive against England, right in the match at halftime (12-8) before a sin-bin and a lopsided penalty count in the second half helped the Lions pull away. - NZME

Five new caps in Maori side Head Coach Colin Cooper has made seven changes to the Maori All Blacks’ run-on side to face Irish club side Munster. The side includes five new caps – Reed Prinsep, Billy Guyton and Ambrose Curtis who will start, while Under 20s captain Leni Apisai and Waikato skipper Whetu Douglas will make their debuts off the bench. Cooper said the win over the USA last week was satisfying but they were also looking forward to the unique experience of playing in Limerick. “Our exit plays last week were particularly good and I thought that was the edge that we had over the US. “We played a lot of rugby in their half. “But I think that Munster being another physical pack, particularly at lineout driving time, we will want to play the game in their half. “We’re expecting a lot of physicality down the back so we’ll be looking to our bench to make an impact. “This match is a huge game. “I think every player at some stage in their career would like to play Munster in Limerick. “We certainly saw the passion of the people here and the stadium being sold out, Ireland beating the All Blacks at the weekend – it’s got everyone pretty hummed so it will be a mighty contest,” Cooper said. Expecting the Irish to get behind their team, Cooper said he was expecting some intense noise at Thomond Park Stadium. “The crowd is like an extra, the 24th person. “They are very vocal and very passionate so it will be a challenge for us. “I’ve always admired Munster from afar. “The people here are pretty passionate, and certainly people here know New Zealand and they know these players - they are very respectful people. “This game is going to be special. “I’ve always admired Munster from afar and now I’m going to be at the coalface of taking on Munster, it will be a great experience and opportunity to lead such good men like we’ve got in this group.”

The New Zealand Heartland XV will play the final match of their 2016 tour against top Fijian team Nadroga at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka this evening. The Heartland XV includes three Mid Canterbury players – Maleli Sau, Nete Caucau and Jackson Donlan – while Hammers’ manager Tony Harrison is managing the team. The Heartland XV kicked off their tour with a 35-14 victory over New Zealand Marist in Auckland last week before jetting off to Fiji. They then locked horns with Nadi in blistering heat, but kept their cool to take a 26-19 win in front of a passionate home crowd on Tuesday, but tonight’s clash is set to be their toughest test yet.

Hames protest disallowed New Zealand Maori coach Colin Cooper has confirmed All Black prop Kane Hames will not be allowed to wear a political slogan on his wrist strapping against Munster in Ireland this weekend. In the lop-sided win over the United States last week, the one-time test player sported bandaging with a political statement on it of support for the Standing Rock campaign which is trying to halt the US Government from constructing a $3.7 billion pipeline through Native American land. “He’s been told who he represents and probably moral or political (statements) are not an opportunity to use on this stage.” - NZME

Daly surprise selection England are set to spring a leftfield selection for this weekend’s autumn opener against South Africa by naming Elliot Daly at outside centre in place of Jonathan Joseph. Daly is poised to make his first Test start on Sunday after winning five caps as a replacement, forming a new midfield partnership with Owen Farrell that will provide two longrange kicking options. Cricket sets a lead for NZ Rugby to follow By dana Johannsen The nine-person panel appointed to steer New Zealand Rugby’s respect and responsibility review would do well to read the document released by New Zealand Cricket yesterday. The Women and Cricket, Cricket and Women report is the culmination of a year-long independent review led by Sarah Beaman, a governance advisor and former Auckland cricketer. Beaman was charged with examining not only the women’s game, but also how the sport in general relates with women. The results, in the words of NZC director Liz Dawson, who also happens to be on the NZ Rugby’s review panel, were “brutal and bleak”. Beaman found female players were “a species on the verge of extinction”, with women making up just 10 per cent of New Zealand’s player base, and 90 per cent of those were under-12. The significant decline in the playing numbers and competition structures from teenagers to adults was attributed to the amalgamation of the women’s cricket council and New Zealand Cricket in 1992 – a move that at the time was considered groundbreaking, but the net result was women were effectively sidelined

from all areas of the game. At the time of the review period, women occupied just two of the 43 board positions on major associations around the country (this number has since increased to five), while there are few pathways for female administrators, coaches and umpires. Perhaps the most damning aspect uncovered by the review was the growing sense of disillusionment among women in the sport; the overwhelming sense that cricket is not a welcome place for them. Beaman should be congratulated for her fortitude to unearth and voice some deeply disturbing trends. While the report exposes a litany of failings on NZC’s part, the national body can also be commended for giving Beaman the remit to present an unlaundered report and its willingness to wholeheartedly accept her findings. NZC executives made no attempt to defend their part in allowing the women’s game to get to this sorry state. Instead they issued a genuine mea culpa at A press conference in Auckland. “Women’s cricket has been sidelined. This is wrong, and we have a responsibility to put things right,” said NZC chief executive David White.

Sarah Beaman Then there was this searing assessment from cricket great Sir Richard Hadlee: “In many ways, we’ve shown a lack of respect and not involved past [women] players the way we should have. “Quite frankly, I’m not surprised by many of the findings that have come out ... it brought to the table how remiss we have been. It appeared that for us, as an organisation, women’s cricket was just too much in the too hard basket. Inter Dominions off the agenda By Michael Guerin Lazarus’s ascension to the top of the pacing world has had its first major casualty – his stablemate Have Faith In Me. The Miracle Mile and Auckland Cup winner has undoubtedly lost his crown as the king of pacing to Lazarus this spring, the handover completed in under four minutes at Addington on Tuesday. But now he has also been

robbed of the chance to compete for harness racing’s richest prize in Australasia and one of the few major races he could target knowing he wouldn’t have to run into Lazarus. Have Faith In Me has been pulled out of the Inter Dominions, which start in Perth in 15 days, with trainers Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen suggesting they simply couldn’t take him after he galloped at the 600

metre mark on Tuesday. “We don’t know what is bugging him but something isn’t quite right,” said Rasmussen. “If he is not pacing cleanly enough here and that isn’t going to get any better around Gloucester Park. “So we have pulled him off the plane to Perth.” Lazarus has now not been beaten in a group one race for almost 18 months and will be red

hot to add another in the FreeFor-All today, which is the day before he actually turns four in real terms. Champion trotter Monbet looks ideally placed to add the Dominion to his bulging trophy cabinet after drawing wide on the front line. Sport Breakers sign Stockton The New Zealand Breakers have signed David Stockton, the son of NBA Hall of Famer John Stockton, to replace injured guard Ben Woodside. Point guard Stockton, who currently plays with Croatian Euroleague side KK Cedevita Zagreb, joins the Auckland-based NBL side for the remainder of the season. His countryman and fellow guard Woodside is set to miss around two months of action due to a foot injury. Stockton’s father holds the all-time NBA record for assists, sharing a famous, lethal combination with retired powerhouse Utah forward Karl Malone in the 1990s.
