Shatner planning Star Trek the musical William Shatner hopes to arrange a show to celebrate 50 years of Star Trek – and it could even be a musical. The 84-yearold, who played Captain Kirk when the television series launched in 1966, is trying to arrange an anniversary show for Star Trek’s half century next year. He told the Press Association: “I’m attempting to sell a 50th anniversary show, but so far I’ve had very little luck. Maybe because Paramount’s going to do their own – but I don’t know how they can do their own without me. I’ve never been contacted. I’ve been actively trying to do a 50th anniversary show ... We had a big company say, ‘What about a musical or a music variety show?’ That got some traction – but nothing’s come of it yet.”

Creepy video from Reynolds Ryan Reynolds puts on his best Aussie accent and scary Deadpool make-up to tell fans to vote for Hugh Jackman as Sexiest Man Alive. Jackman shared Reynold’s creepy video to his six million Twitter followers and 3.7 million Instagram fans. “G’day mate. Hugh Jackman here just reminding you to get your votes in for People’s Sexiest Man Alive. Cover’s coming up,” Reynolds said in an Australian accent. The pair worked together on X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where Reynolds first played Wade Wilson aka Deadpool. Reynolds recently wrapped up filming for the Deadpool film, which is due for release on February 11, 2016. The video is believed to have been filmed on the set of Deadpool, possibly from reshoots or additional filming. Jackman and Reynolds have each been crowned Sexiest Man Alive previously – Jackman in 2008 and Reynolds in 2010.

Tom Jones to play Auckland gig Veteran Welsh singer Tom Jones will play a one-off show in Auckland next year. The 75-year-old, who has sold more than 100 million records in his 50-year career, will perform at Vector Arena on March 19 – his first NZ show since 2010. Tickets for the show, on the same day as the Auckland City Limits festival at Western Springs, go on sale on November 17.

Bieber releases collaboration Singer Justin Bieber has released his collaboration with British singer Ed Sheeran titled Love Yourself on Apple Music. Bieber revealed he worked with Sheeran on a track for his upcoming album Purpose during an interview with Nova 96.0 in October. The song was recorded in Melbourne. Britain’s richest under-30s One Direction may have lost a member this year, but the chart-topping boyband has not seen their success diminish in the wake of Zayn Malik’s departure. The group – featuring 22-year-olds Niall Horan, Liam Payne, 21-year-old Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, 23 – have retained their title as Britain’s richest under-30s for the third year running in Heat magazine’s annual Rich List. Several Ashburton businesses have been left with unpaid bills and up to 13 families could be left with unfinished homes, after GJ Gardner Homes Mid and South Canterbury franchise went into voluntary liquidation. One creditor, Allan McCormick is faced with $160,000 in unpaid bills and he knows there are many other businesses in a similar situation. The total debt will not be known until liquidators Rodgers Reidy have worked through the company’s accounts. They expect to release their first report on Friday. Trading as Heritage Canterbury Ltd, shareholders Lynda, John and Tobie Hartley bought the GJ Gardner franchise in 2014 opening an account with Mr McCormick’s company Helmack ITM. Initially bills were paid promptly, he said. “But they started running slow. I asked them where the money was and John Hartley told me he had let people into their homes before they were fully paid for. He said to me, face-to-face, ‘Allan, I assure you, you will be paid’.” When Mr McCormick heard the company had gone into liquidation he went out to a worksite at Lake Hood, hoping he could re-

The collapse of building companies was all too common, Mr McCormick said, and suppliers continued to get burned because

of the way business was done in the industry. “We’re absolute mugs to ourselves, absolute fools. When you buy your groceries you pay before you leave the shop. We sell hundreds of thousands of dollars of goods to building companies on

a promisory note that they might pay us – one day.” Dominator Doors is owed $10,000 by the franchise and was told the money had been paid to a third party by mistake, owner Brian Downes said, while builder Duncan Leadley reckons the

liquidation will cost him at least $22,000. With a staff of five to pay every week, he cannot afford to take such a financial hit. “I’m also pretty concerned about the clients, they’re nice people and I was going to be in there on their house putting up gib this week ,” he said. He’s gutted that he took John Hartley’s word that he would be paid. “He gave me his personal guarantee. He said ‘you’ll have no problem getting your money’, man to man he gave me his word. That was 10 days ago and 10 days ago he probably knew this was going to happen. “I took him at his word, went in and did the work and now I’m out of pocket.” Builder Danny Naish is also out of pocket, with some bills running back to last year, his mother Jane said. She saw the writing on the wall and was prepared to put in place a statutory demand to get her son’s bills paid. The Hartleys pre-empted that by going into voluntary liquidation. Now they’ll have to queue for payment with everyone else, she said. The Guardian was unable to contact anyone from Heritage Canterbury.

A call from liquidator Geoff Brown was the first GJ Gardner Homes chief executive Grant Porteous knew that his Ashburton franchisee was in financial trouble. GJ Gardner Mid South Canterbury, trading as Heritage Canterbury went into voluntary liquidation on Monday, leaving dozens of suppliers and tradesmen wondering if they would get paid and several home owners with unfinished properties. It was owned by Lynda, John and Tobie Hartley.

“This came as quite a surprise to us as it was contrary to the information we’d been given by John Hartley,” Mr Porteous said. “We were aware that John was having some financial issues and had thought we were working together to resolve these. He had indicated that he had recently introduced significant working capital into the business.” Mr Porteous said he was still investigating how many customers had or would be affected, but from initial information it appeared two had recently paid deposits, three jobs were under construction and

a further eight were completed but may have some minor matters to be resolved. “It seems these clients have not paid their final payment, even though they’ve taken possession, something we had advised John not to do.” He believes Heritage Canterbury did not follow the appropriate business systems that were part of the franchise agreement and that made it difficult, initially to get an accurate handle on creditor or customer numbers that was 100 per cent accurate. Mr Porteous said his compa-

ny would be doing everything it could to have customers’ homes completed without delay, but final decision on completion would lie with the liquidator. “We’d hope to use our skills and resources to assist the liquidators in completing the homes.” While he was disappointed to have a franchisee go into voluntary liquidation, Mr Porteous said this was no reflection of the group as each business was independent. “Our focus now as a national office is to work as co-operatively with the liquidators as they will

allow to try and minimise any disruption for the five customers involved. “If I am allowed by the liquidators, it is my intention to personally travel to Timaru and Ashburton and visit the customers affected, assess the work to be done on their homes and provide as much information as we can to the liquidators of the work to be done.” Heritage Canterbury took over the Mid and South Canterbury franchise from Heartland Builders last year and at that point the business was in great shape, Mr Porteous said.

When Carew six-year-old Maddie Taylor was three, she suffered acute renal failure. Her journey of survival and recovery were helped by an avid determination to see her favourite pet again, a bantam hen. It is a heart-warming tale, and one which has been captured for all time in a new book by worldrenowned photographer Rachael Hale McKenna. Little Loves, New Zealand Children and Their Favourite Animals, is newly released by publisher Allen and Unwin. As much as Maddie’s parents are proud of seeing their daughter feature alongside other Kiwi children and their animals in the book, the tale it tells takes them back to a dark time. Maddie’s mum Karen Taylor said her daughter’s illness came out of the blue. One day the threeyear-old came home from preschool complaining of a sore tummy. After two to three days of bloody diarrohea, Mrs Taylor took her to the weekend after hours doctor in Ashburton. Samples were taken and she was sent home. “I wasn’t happy because by that night her diarrohea was straight blood,” Mrs Taylor said. She was back in at another Ashburton doctor’s surgery the next day. Within five minutes of being there they said she’s going to Starship. They could tell by looking at her that it was her kidneys.” Maddie was stabilised in Christchurch that night and the next day the whole family flew to Auckland, dad John and little brother Josh on a commercial airliner and Mrs Taylor and Maddie with the New Zealand Flying Doctor Service. At Starship, Mrs Taylor was told, before her husband and son had arrived, that Maddie needed surgery and she had a 25 per cent chance of survival. However, the surgery, to insert a tube so she could receive dialysis, went well. The subsequent dialysis was also a great success, and Maddie has now recovered and requires only annual checkups. Maddie had contracted Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome (HUS), triggered by coming into contact with E Coli, from an unknown source. The bright spot in Maddie’s life during the fortnight she spent at Starship had been thinking of her buff pekin bantam hen Huggy. She would be trying to leap out of her hospital bed so she could go home to feed and groom the bird. Not long after Maddie came home, Huggy passed away, and Spangle an old English game bantam joined the family. Mr Taylor is president of the Ashburton Fanciers Society, and the family home on a Carew dairy farm has many pets of the avian kind, including turkeys, pigeons, budgerigars and ducks. Spangle is Maddie’s favourite, and she likes preparing the hen for shows, washing her legs and putting on her comb dressing. And Maddie’s bedroom is proudly decorated with Spangle’s ribbons and rosettes.

Tully trial date set The man charged with last year’s Work and Income shootings in Ashburton will stand trial this month, it was confirmed yesterday. Homeless man Russell John Tully, 48, denies murdering Work and Income front-counter workers Peggy Turuhira Noble, 67, and Susan Leigh Cleveland, 55, on September 1 last year. He is also accused of attempting to murder two other staff members – Lindy Louise Curtis, 43, who was shot in the leg and badly injured, and Kim Elizabeth Adams. Tully also faces charges that include theft, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and setting a man trap. The trial, before Justice Cameron Mander, will start on November 23. It is set down for two to three weeks. Tully is remanded in custody. - NZME

Gorge roadworks From Monday, motorists using the Rakaia Gorge Bridge can expect to face delays in their journeys. The NZ Transport Agency will start work on the repair of running boards on the bridge and will be inspecting the bridge’s steel truss supports from the bridge deck and installing new kerbs on the bridge. This means only one lane will be available during the day on the bridge deck. Work will continue for three weeks until early December and drivers can expect delays of about 20 minutes with three five-minute clearances over the workday hour.

The warm weather of the past few days takes a break this week, as a cold snap envelops the country – but Aucklanders will be spared the worst. The southerly change will bring a sharp fall in temperatures and even the outside chance of a frost in rural Wairarapa on Thursday morning. It had already reached Stewart Island and Invercargill last evening and today makes itself known to mainlanders. World Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims will be commemorated in Ashburton at Smallbone Reserve 2pm on Sunday. It will be the fifth annual event in the town, this time being organised by St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. The day is held on the third Sunday of November each year, and internationally celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. St Andrew’s ministry assistant Dellwyn Moylan said the short and informal gathering would give members of the public an opportunity to remember road accident victims and to give thanks to those who support them and their families. Two people have been killed on Mid Canterbury roads so far this year, while last year there were six fatal crashes in the district.

Baby beaten A month-old baby was rushed to hospital with bleeding to the brain after allegedly being beaten by her father. The little girl is in Auckland’s Starship Hospital after the attack in Waitara in Taranaki. The assault is reported to have happened on Friday while the girl’s family were in town for a gathering. The baby’s 29-yearold father was arrested about 2am on Sunday at a Waitara address, where he was with the baby’s mother. He was charged with injuring with intent to injure, wounding with reckless disregard and breaching a protection order. - NZME

Safe drinking advice not on agenda By Sue NewmaN

When it comes to how much you can drink and still remain within legal drink driving limits, the Ashburton Trust won’t be handing out any advice to its patrons. Hospitality New Zealand has published a Rule of Thumb guide it hopes pubs and clubs around New Zealand will display in their

bars. It spells out clearly what it believes is a safe consumption level – three standard drinks over two hours for men and two standard drinks over two hours for women. But trust acting chief executive Rob Reid said the trust is unlikely to buy into the promotion. “Everyone is different and we don’t want to be in a position

where we give people advice on how much they should or should not be drinking; that’s not something we’ll be telling people,” he said. Because of the confusion around alcohol consumption and the current lower limits for safe driving, New Zealand Police have suggested that anyone who is unsure how much to drink, should

opt for zero consumption. The drink-driving limit was cut from 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath to 250mcg in December last year and since then hotels around New Zealand have counted the cost in lost turnover, particularly in areas where there is no public transport. Hospitality New Zealand makes it clear in its promotion that it

does not support drink driving, but that its rule of thumb consumption guide is about clearing confusion and making it clear people can still go out, drink moderately and still be safe to drive. The industry body might be promoting the rule of thumb, but trust would be very reluctant to be involved, Mr Reid said.

A Geraldine deputy principal who suffered a suspected heart attack at school remains in hospital and is breathing on her own, after she was revived by quick thinking colleagues. Jo Nicolson was on her way to a morning briefing at Geraldine High School on Monday morning when she collapsed just outside the staffroom. “We are pleased that Mr Rogers and Mr Brown were able to respond and help her. They did have to use the defibrillator,” a note on the school’s Facebook page says. Grant Rogers is another deputy principal and Drew Brown is the head of the outdoor education department. Yesterday, principal Simon Coleman said their quick response was crucial for Mrs Nicolson. “All the hospital reports are saying those 10 minutes were critical and we got on to it straight away, and that made the difference to her,” Mr Coleman said. Other staff also helped at the scene before paramedics arrived and Mr Coleman said support was being offered to both pupils and staff. Mr Coleman said pupils’ routines had not been disrupted and that was probably helping them through the situation. - NZME

Tap water as ‘cheap as chips’ By Caitlin Porter

There is nothing wrong with good old tap water, that’s the message from dentist Dr Justin Wall. His comments come in the wake of a “switch to water” campaign launched by the New Zealand Dental Association. The association is urging Kiwi families to opt for water in an attempt to halt the march of tooth decay. Association chief executive Dr David Crum said dentists would much rather prevent dental disease that try and repair the damage it causes. Locally Dr Wall said he sees children and adults with tooth decay attributed to sugar and it is an ongoing problem. In 2012 and 2013 Canterbury dentists dealt with 18.374 decayed, missing or filled teeth (DMFT) in five-year-old children alone and Ministry of Health statistics show in 2013 38 per cent of Canterbury five-year-olds had some form of tooth decay. Dr Wall said traditionally families had three “drinks of choice” – milk, water and soft drink. While those who favoured water usually stuck to it, people who once opted for milk are now reaching for soft drink, due to price, he said. However common sense suggests if people are opting for the less expensive item, there is nothing quite as cheap as tap water. “There is a misconception from

people that drinking tap water is bad for you,” Dr Wall said. “There is nothing wrong the reticulated water supply in New Zealand whatsoever.” Essentially the economic reality is milk is more expensive that soft drink but water is the best value, he said. However, for those who are “fussy” other alternatives are available, including sugar alternative cordials, Dr Wall said. “The things that are killing teeth are sugar containing, syrupy drinks,” he said. As a result Dr Wall is urging people to instead reach for water, a simple decision that is “cheap as chips”.

Armed police were on guard yesterday as a sixth person appeared in court charged with the murder of Craig Rippon. There was an armed presence outside the Whanganui District Court as a police van arrived with the accused and while he made his appearance yesterday afternoon. He was remanded in custody to appear in the High Court at Whanganui on November 30 as were the five others who were in court on Monday in connection with the death of 57-year-old Gonville man Mr Rippon. Mr Rippon, the leader of the Black Power gang in Wanganui, died in hospital after being assaulted at a Rimu St address on Sunday afternoon. All six have interim name suppression and the charges will be heard jointly on November 30. - NZME

Ex-attache on trial The former Malaysian defence attache who left New Zealand and then returned to face sexual charges will stand trial later this month and yesterday pretrial issues were discussed at a brief hearing in Wellington. Muhammad Rizalman bin Ismail wasn’t in the High Court for the chambers hearing, the contents of which cannot be reported. Ollie Bubb has landed his dream job, at the young age of nine. The Ashburton Borough School pupil will star in Mary Poppins, opening at the Court Theatre in Christchurch on November 21. Ollie obtained the paid role after auditioning, and began the full-on five-week rehearsal period last month. Being a professional actor is among career goals Ollie aspires to, the others being a teacher and a professional tennis player. Dedication and commitment are skills he is learning in his new role, as he travels to the theatre every day after school and on Saturdays, and learns his copious amount of lines in the car on the way there, and in his spare time on Sundays. “It’s a little tiring, but it’s really fun,” Ollie said. “You meet a lot of cool people as well.” Ollie plays the mischievous Michael Banks in the play. He and his older sister Jane advertise for their own nanny, specifying “they must be kind, they must be witty, very sweet and fairly pretty”. A photo opportunity gone wrong cost a Belgian tourist a broken arm at Punakaiki on Monday. The 59-year-old broke her arm and injured her knee when she fell down a two-metre bank beside the Pancake Rocks walking track. Punakaiki Visitor Centre supervisor Prue Grant said the woman had stepped backwards off the track while taking a photo. Exam scripts stolen A total of 98 unmarked student examination scripts have been stolen in a burglary at the University of Otago Clocktower building, in what the university has slammed as a “reprehensible act”. Branches gather for anniversary New Zealand Red Cross yesterday celebrated its 100th birthday. To commemorate the special day Mid Canterbury’s four Red Cross branches – Ashburton, Methven, Tinwald and Rakaia came together for a commemorative tree planting ceremony at the Ashburton Domain. Local Red Cross member Zella McGirr spoke to a crowd of 20 who gathered for the short ceremony and explained a Myrtle tree had been chosen for its red bark. A portion of the group then headed over to the Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre where a special Red Cross display was unveiled. It includes a photo slideshow and a selection of items from the museum such as clothing, leaders’ handbooks, tea pots, badges and bandage rolling equipment. The display will remain intact until mid-February and anyone who wishes to display their own Red Cross memorabilia is encouraged to contact the museum.

South Island’s diversity down New Zealand’s population will continue to become even more diverse over the next 20 years – but not so much in the South Island. According to official population projections data revealed this week, many areas – particularly in Auckland – will have high numbers of Maori, Asian and Pasifika in 2038. Some parts of the city will see a dramatic drop in European Kiwis, however, particularly in parts of South Auckland, where there is already a high population of Pacific Islanders. In the South Island, the projections show there will continue to be very few people with Asian and Pasifika backgrounds in some areas. Currently in Dunedin, 90 per cent of the population are listed as European or other. Eight per cent of people are Maori, 8 per cent are Asian and 3 per cent identify as Pacific. In 2038, the Pasifika population is

up to 4 per cent, Asian at 11 per cent and Maori at 14 per cent. Europeans go down to 82 per cent. The population in Christchurch in 23 years will be 77 per cent people with European backgrounds, 13 per cent Maori and 5 per cent Pacific. The Asian population goes from 10 per cent to 19 per cent. Otago’s make-up projection is 2038 will see the majority of the population (93 per cent) being European. There will be 13 per cent Maori, 6 per cent Asian and 4 per cent Pasifika. In comparison to these areas in the south of the country, some parts of the North Island will see a marked drop in the number of Europeans. In the Otara-Papatoetoe local board area, there will only be 7 per cent of Europeans living there – a big drop from the 22 per cent currently calling that area home. - NZME

Ripples from business collapse far reaching

here’s high risk to doing business. With the best will in the world a good business can go bad and often when it does it takes others down with it. The name GJ Gardner is one of the gilt-edged names in the home building industry. It’s a company that has franchised across New Zealand and some big names have put their weight behind its advertising campaigns. But like any business, GJ Gardner away from corporate headquarters, is only as good as the person behind the franchise. Many companies around the Ashburton District today will be counting in quite significant dollars the cost of doing business with the mid-south Canterbury franchisees of this company. It’s crashed and they’ve been burned. No-one likes to see a business go out of business, but in this instance public feeling will be very strongly with the companies, the tradies and the homeowners who’re left counting the cost. Unravelling what went wrong and where the dollars have gone will be a messy and unpleasant business. There will be no winners; at best the creditors will get a small slice of what they’re owed. If there’s no money in the pot and no assets to sell, then their share of nothing will be just that, nothing. For some, such as the tradie with a handful of staff, losing not only the profit on a job, but also having to foot the bill for extra costs, could be enough to set them back years in their business plans. But it’s the homeowners who’re the real losers. They’re possibly looking at lost deposits or homes they’ll need to find someone else to finish. They have no re-course unless the parent company steps in. And at the early stages, that’s what GJ Gardner seems prepared to do. While they’re clearly at arm’s length from what’s happened in Ashburton, they’re not playing the franchise card, they’re stepping up and saying they’ll do what they can for whoever they can. That attitude is refreshing and it shows the company might be built on more than just making money. It appears those at the top also have a heart and that the tarnish on the GJ Gardner name might only be passing.

It’s all about the money W

ith $724m of assets and an annual turnover of over $50m, it is important for the Ashburton District Council to be able to keep residents and ratepayers fully informed about its financial state, and to provide confidence that it can properly manage its money. The council’s annual report is one of the main documents it is required to produce each year that outlines its financial performance in detail. Our latest annual report for the 2014/15 financial year was adopted by the council at the end of October. We recorded a surplus of $9.5m before taxation and other comprehensive income. The annual report received an unqualified audit opinion. Financial benchmarks are good indicators of how well any business is being managed. Council is no exception. Ratepayers are now also able to keep a closer eye on the council’s financial position by looking at how we performed against seven mandatory benchmarks. The benchmarks address three elements of financial prudence – affordability, sustainability and predictability. This is the second year that councils throughout New Zealand have been required to publish their financial prudence

results, in the prescribed format, in their annual reports. The Government introduced the new regulations in 2014 to help promote more informed public debate about local authority financial management. This year the Ashburton District Council reported that it had met all of its key benchmarks. While council’s total debt at $47.5m is higher than what has been in previous years, this increase was planned for and reflects our continued investment in core infrastructure. The council’s debt actually sits well below its debt limits. We borrow far less than what we could and our current borrowings are actually 30 per cent less than what we had projected. We set our benchmark for our loan interest costs to be no more than 10 per cent of our revenue and we currently sit well below this it at 4.4 per cent. Our cash flow is extremely good. At June 30, 2015, we were at 140.1 per cent of what we projected.

This means that the council received sufficient cash to meet its operating expenditure needs. Any surplus is used to fund capital projects and to minimise our future borrowing requirements. Our operating surplus is also positive, again indicating that the council’s operating revenue is sufficient to meet operating expenditure. Overall, we are meeting our budget balance requirements. Rates affordability is a key issue for the council. Our aim is to ensure that we collect no more than 1 per cent of the total capital value of the district from the ratepayers. Given the recent valuation increases in the district by Quotable Value NZ, Ashburton District Council is collecting about $100m less than the benchmark level. With new facilities like the EA Networks Centre coming on stream we had set a limit of increasing overall rates by no more than 8.5 per cent in the 2014/15 year (which was 5 per cent, plus 3.5 per cent Local Government Price Index). The total rate increase was slightly lower at 7.2 per cent. This year’s rates increase was 5.2 per cent, and the planned increased for 2016/17 is 4.5 per cent, subject to draft annual plan consultation which will occur in

April next year. While we are keeping well within acceptable limits, we acknowledge large rates increases are contentious. The council has various schemes to help eligible ratepayers with rates affordability issues and we encourage people to contact our customer services office to discuss these during normal business hours. The Ashburton District has seen a great deal of investment by the council in recent years, updating infrastructure and community services and we’ve had some big ticket items come to fruition. As a consequence our staffing levels have risen, particularly with the operation of the EA Networks Centre. Open 99 hours a week, 88 new staff (many part-time or casuals) are now employed at the centre. The council employs 235 staff in total, compared to 154 a year ago. By comparison, neighbouring council Timaru employs 299 staff; Selwyn 267 and Waimakariri 372 staff. We will be publishing the full report and a shorter summary document later this month. Island ‘under control’ A mass riot at controversial Australian detention centre Christmas Island is over, and the centre now under control, Australian media is reporting. It came after riot police stormed the facility at dawn yesterday, local time. There were reports of some detainees barricading themselves inside with petrol bombs, machetes and chainsaws after raiding a garden shed for weapons. The unrest began in the early hours of Monday morning after upset refugees asked officials what happened to refugee Fazel Chegeni, whose body was found on Sunday following his escape from the detention centre. The detention centre is run by controversial private prison operator Serco, which hit headlines in New Zealand this year after a series of scandals emerged at Mt Eden prison. Two bus-loads of guard reinforcements were trucked to Christmas Island overnight, patrolling the perimeter of the centre, as sirens sounded for hours on end. The facility was now “completely under the control” of Australian authorities, Sky News Australia reported. “There’s an operation under

Thin thermometer Japanese researchers have developed a micro-thin thermal sensor that can be attached directly to the skin, potentially useful in monitoring the health of infants or even making sportswear more comfortable. The group said the device, embedded in an ultra-fine film, can measure target temperatures between 25C and 50C, a range that includes that of the human body. Hotel staff under scrutiny over Russian crash The Airbus A321 bound for St Petersburg crashed 23 minutes after leaving Sharm el-Sheikh on October 31, killing all 224 people on board. With an increasing number of reports indicating the crash was caused by a terrorist attack, the search for the culprit is expanding. Interrogations of Sharm elSheikh airport staff have failed to turn over any breakthroughs.

A team of security experts from the UK visited the airport last week, and became concerned after finding poor lighting in one corner of the airport, as well as a guard playing on his phone instead of monitoring an x-ray machine. A Swedish man has died after being catapulted into the gutter from an out-of-control shopping trolley, while his friend could face charges over the high-speed stunt. The men, both 28, were thrown from the trolley after it swerved onto the wrong side of the road, hitting a car travelling in the opposite direction at about 60km/h. - AAP

Investing myth #3 –the investment ‘home-run’ myth

his week is the third and final investment myth which I’m covering and one which is perhaps the most hazardous of the three – the investment homerun myth. A lot of people believe that successful investing means successfully picking the next hottest investment and getting in large. People are drawn to investments that offer seemingly very large returns and tend to underestimate or forget entirely the risk inherent in the investment. Perhaps a more suitable sporting analogy for us Kiwis would be cricket and investors wanting to hit the “winning six” a la Grant Elliot in the world cup semi-final earlier in the year. Obviously sixes are the quickest way to get runs and are definitely the most entertaining for the spectators but people tend to forget that most cricket matches are won through strong partnerships and the steady accumulation of runs. It’s not much different with successful investing in that there

are plenty of ups and downs in an investment portfolio through a lifetime but those with a solid investment plan, proven investments and patience are the ones who win in the long run. aking is going through a resurgence of interest from young mums and older mums who might not have rattled out the baking tins for years. And while there are plenty of new and innovative sweet things to whip up, when it comes to crowd pleasers, it’s often the old faithfuls, the recipes that were tested by time that are the ones home cooks keep going back to. The pairing of Simon and Alison Holst are among New Zealand’s top authorities on homestyle cooking and while the pair have published dozens of recipe books, they’ve tapped into their creativity to launch another, The Complete Home Baking collection. It contains more than 250 tried, tested and much-loved recipes accumulated over decades of cooking.

■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Melt butter in large pot, remove from heat as soon as liquid. ■ Stir in sugars and egg. ■ Mix milk, soda and vanilla together and add to the mixture. ■ Sprinkle flour, rolled oats and fruit, nuts and seeds over mixture and combine well. ■ Drop teaspoon lots on to a greased baking tray. Leave room for spreading. ■ Bake 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from tray to cooling rack while warm. ■ Store in airtight container.

Fresh ginger cake 125g butter 1t grated lemon zest 1/2 C hot water 1/2 C packed brown sugar 1/2 C golden syrup 1 large egg 1T finely grated fresh ginger 1 3/4C plain flour 1t baking soda 1t grated nutmeg 1/4 t ground cloves 1/2 t ground cinnamon ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Line a 21cm ring pan with baking paper. ■ Cut butter into 16 cubes, put in pot with lemon zest and hot water. ■ Heat until butter melts. Remove from heat. ■ Cool to bath temperature. ■ Whisk in sugar, syrup, egg and

ginger and cool to lukewarm. ■ Add sifted dry ingredients and mix with whisk or beater until lump free. ■ Pour into ring tin. ■ Bake 40 mins. Cool in pan for five mins. ■ Turn on to service plate. ■ Dust with icing sugar and serve either plain or with cream or yoghurt.

bowl and stir. ■ Sprinkle dry ingredients into the liquid mixture. ■ Stir until the flour is just moistened, but do not over mix. ■ Spoon the mixture into 12 regular, non-stick sprayed muffin pans. ■ Bake 15-18 mins. ■ Remove from oven and leave to cool in pans for three minutes. ■ Put on cooling rack.

125g butter 1C sugar 2 lge eggs 1t vanilla essence 1C plain flour 1/4 C cocoa 1t baking powder 1/2 C chopped walnuts ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Line the base and sides of 18 x 28cm pan with baking paper. ■ Melt butter until liquid but not hot. Remove from heat. ■ Using a fork, beat in sugar, eggs and vanilla essence. ■ Sift in flour, cocoa and baking powder. Add nuts and stir until just combined. ■ Pour into baking pan and smooth surface. ■ Bake 30 mins (mixture will rise and sink again). ■ When cold cut into pieces and dust with icing sugar.

Mark McDonald does not have time to talk, he’s shifting stock. But later in the day, the Ashburton Forks dairy farmer is at the other end of the phone, telling this reporter about his other life, that of being a painter. The 53-year-old is married to Jenny and the couple have three children aged from 17 to 22. The oldest is Jack, who is also an artist and is this month joining his dad in an exhibition at the Methven Art Gallery. Father and son are as busy as each other – Mark out on the farm and Jack in his new job in Wellington, for the BNZ, as a member of the bank’s financial

markets’ team. But they both still find time to paint, saying the activity is a good way to unwind from their day. Mark paints mainly landscapes in acrylic and gouache. Prior to moving to the South Island 22 years ago he exhibited his works in Taranaki and Wellington. He has since exhibited with the Ashburton Society of Arts and undertakes commissions. He believes he has the best of both worlds, being able to be out on the farm in the fresh air getting plenty of exercise and then paint outside of work hours. “I’m always seeing things in the rural community that I think

will make a good painting, I have always got plenty of raw material to work with,” Mark said. Meanwhile, Jack believes his new resident city of Wellington will assist his artistic career. The University of Canterbury civil engineering graduate said his new flatmates were all arty and liked to draw. “I think I will have a good time here, paint more and paint better,” he said as he looked out to Wellington Harbour from the fifth floor of the capital’s BNZ building. The two-time Ashburton Zonta Youth Art Award winner has had a good start over the past couple of years to the commercial side of his art career, having

sold all the 15 major works he created. While Jack’s work includes landscapes, they differ from his father’s, in that they are mainly painted on corrugated iron or rustic wood. The pair like to paint together on the family farm, where their work space is mainly the dining room table. So far they had been good at not getting paint on the home’s interior surfaces. “We should probably start laying down some newspaper at some stage,” Jack said. He said it was an honour to be exhibiting alongside his father. “He’s far more qualified and experienced and talented than I am.”

Ashburton-based football blogger Chris Oakley has been nominated for the Blogger of the Year award at the Football Supporters’ Federation Awards in London next month. Oakley’s blog, Football Attic, focuses on football nostalgia, when the game was more ‘innocent’ in the 70s and 80s, and what made it so colourful for those that grew up in an era that boasted the flair of George Best and Rodney Marsh to the brawn of Terry Butcher and Ron ‘Chopper’ Harris. “There were more characters in the game, and when you include all the memorabilia into the equation, you’re not just remembering games, goals being

scored or the players, but all the peripheral stuff too,” said Oakley. The 44-year-old has been blogging about football since 2006, but started Football Attic in November, 2011. Unlike other sites, Oakley focuses less on facts and figures, but everything around the game from sticker books and retro jerseys to club anthems and Subbuteo, a table top football game. “When I was growing up in the late 70s and throughout the 80s, it was pre-internet, pre-satellite TV, so you only saw fragments of football on TV,” he said. “A whole industry built up, particularly for kids to get enjoyment out of football. “There were posters, board games, comics, video games, and

I grew up into that, so I feel very lucky.” Oakley has developed a niche audience, and Football Attic receives around 100 hits a day, although that number swelled to more than 2000 during September at the climax of his ‘50 Greatest Football Shirts Ever’ feature. “It’s all about general football nostalgia. “I’ve got lots stuff in the garage so I can just go out, get a book and review it. “It’s all very niche stuff, but people like the niche stuff,” he said. Oakley, who was born in Barking, Essex and moved to New Zealand in 2011, is an avid West Ham fan and longs for the days, like his captivated audience,

Human frailty is to blame for the culture of cheating and corruption within Russian athletics, says World Anti-Doping Authority Director General David Howman. Russia could be banned from next year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, after a damaging WADA report yesterday uncovered evidence of bribery, and government-backed corruption, doping and the hiding of positive tests within Russian athletics. Howman believes such a culture of cheating and deceit was able to exist simply because those involved in athletics and government administration are vulnerable to temptation and corruption. “It happened because people can be corrupted and we deal with a programme in anti-doping where we rely very much on human beings,” Howman told The Paul Henry Show. “It’s not just a process or set of rules, and sometimes human beings let us down and this is what’s occurred on a big scale in Russia.” While the London Olympics was touted as being drug free, the WADA report revealed how Russian authorities had hidden positive doping tests to allow cheating athletes to compete. “Some of those would have competed in London when suspicions of doping were known to the Russian authorities and to other authorities and yet were not exposed,” Howman said. “Consequently there’s been eight athletes referred for sanction processes, we’re awaiting the outcomes of those eight. “Some of those were medallists at the London Olympic Games.” Despite that admission, Howman defended the effectiveness of anti-doping measures and practices at the London Olympics and stressed the cheating and cover-ups between Russian athletes and officials had occurred prior to the event. “You really have to fail an IQ test to go and commit a doping offence in an Olympic Games,” he said. “When you’re looking at all the testing that’s done outside of those big events, that’s when the problems can arise and that seems to have occurred in Russia in a big way. “And not only has the problem arisen, people have paid a lot of money to cover up some of the problems and that’s the concern to us.” Discovering and revealing the full extent of doping within Russian athletics was not possible prior to the London Olympics, as WADA only gained the right to begin their investigation earlier this year. “We didn’t have the authority to conduct investigations prior to London, we only got that authority on the first of January this year,” Howman explained. - NZME

The new ‘hair bears’ By Michael Burgess Kiwis back-rowers Kevin Proctor and Tohu Harris have earned themselves a unique nickname in this team. Sam Moa describes them as the “new hair bears”, a tribute to two of the most underrated members of this side. The original ‘hair bears’ were Kiwis Joe Galuvao and Tony Puletua in the early 2000s with Penrith. Both had granite-like physiques and stood out with their bushy mops of hair and menacing physicality on the edges. They were big factors in the Panthers’ march to the 2003 premiership. Proctor and Harris are the shaggy-haired compadres in the back row of this Kiwis team. Proctor’s familiar dreadlocks, which he has retained for the entirety of his NRL career, wouldn’t look out of place in a reggae band, while Harris’s 1970s hairstyle dovetails perfectly with his game, built on old-fashioned values.

Like the originals, Proctor and Harris are similarly effective, and also don’t always get the credit they might deserve. But their team-mates have no doubt. “They are the new hair bears with a bit more finesse and flair,” said Moa. “The old hair bears just used to bash everyone but these two are special players and we are lucky to have them.” Proctor and Harris played vital hands in Sunday’s second test win over Enland. They outplayed their opposites and provided plenty of attacking threat. Proctor went close to scoring on two occasions and Harris had the assist for Shaun Kenny-Dowall’s try. They were also defensive rocks on the game’s edges and Harris showed good awareness to defuse a dangerous English grubber late in the second half, covering for his fullback and winger who were caught out of position. “Tohu and KP led the way for

“Watching from the sideline when I was off they really dug in. “Those showed a lot of heart and skill. “I [told them] after the game, ‘you two golliwogs had a blinder’.” Proctor and Harris don’t always grab the headlines, but they are rated highly within the Kiwis camp. It’s hard to imagine another scenario like the 2013 World Cup, where both were absent for different reasons. They have become essential members of this New Zealand team, the kind of players you fit in first then worry about who else is in the 17. They have been ever-presents in the Kiwis’ current run of six victories in seven tests. Proctor played a vital part in the first chapter, forcing his way through four Australian defenders to draw the Kiwis level in Brisbane, after the Kangaroos had opened the scoring in the first game of the 2014 Four Nations. - NZME

Manning makes New Zealand Cup history The gamble of a lifetime paid a history-defying dividend when Kerryn Manning became the first woman to win the New Zealand Trotting Cup yesterday. Just a week after compatriot Michelle Payne became the first female to ride the winner of the Melbourne Cup, Manning went one better as she trained and drove Arden Rooney to win the greatest pacing race in Australasia. And to achieve that feat for the first time in the 111-year history of the race Manning had to take a gamble that almost cost Arden Rooney victory. The former New Zealand pacer started his campaign in Melbourne this season with two listless runs, and Manning and her husband Grant Campbell decided to add half blinds to his gear, knowing they would almost certainly cause him to over-race, almost uncontrollably. “He could be a bit dopey without them so we put them on to wake him up,” said Campbell. “But we knew that they could also make him over-race, and that would be a very hard way to win a 3200m race. “So we were damned if we did or damned if we didn’t, but we took the gamble. “We reckoned while he would take plenty out of himself wearing them, he would also take plenty out of the others.” That proved spot on as Ar-

ing track used by Manning and Campbell. “Our track is 2000m of dirt and at one stage rises 12m in the space of 350m,” said Campbell. “So it gets them rock hard fit if they can cop it.” Arden Rooney showed the benefit of the rugged regime when he won the Hunter Cup at massive odds last February, but Manning admitted yesterday’s win was a level above that.

“I had been here to the New Zealand Cup before and the race, the crowd, everything about it makes it a special day,” she said. “Just to have a starter was something special but to win it is a dream. “And to be the first female to drive the winner when it has been going since 1904 is an amazing feeling.” The win takes Arden Rooney past $1 million in stakes, much of that will be re-invested back into the New Zealand racing industry as his owners, Merv and Meg Butterworth, are prolific buyers of Kiwi racing stock. And he looks certain to return next season to defend his title, which would suit Manning just fine. “That was pretty amazing and we would love to bring him back,” she beamed. “This is his sort of racing he loves, and we to do too.”
