THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY

Prison term for East St bashing An Ashburton father who sustained severe brain injuries during an unprovoked late night attack, said his way of life before the event was over. And the young man responsible has been imprisoned for three years and five months. Vincent Kuru-Nathan was aged 19 when he assaulted Jeff Hill in the early hours of March 23, leaving him unconscious on East Street. Yesterday Kuru-Nathan, now 20, appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court for sentencing on one count of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and two of assault. Defence counsel Douglas Brown told the court his client had been drinking heavily after a long period of abstinence, enforced by a home detention sentence handed down for earlier offending. Kuru-Nathan and some acquaintances accosted Mr Hill as he walked up the street with his friend Shaun Bovey after an evening out. He punched Mr Hill, who

stumbled. Mr Bovey was hit in the head while attempting to intervene, causing him to fall to the ground. Kuru-Nathan then rounded on Mr Hill again, landing a second blow which caused him to “drop like a stone”. Mr Hill sustained two skull fractures and a brain bleed. He suffers from amnesia, is easily fatigued and faces a lengthy rehabilitation. His businesses has folded, and he is unable to support his family. “My way of life before March 24 has come to an end,” Mr Hill’s victim impact statement read. Judge Maze pointed to KuruNathan’s 35 previous convictions – accrued before he was 20, and a significant history in the youth court, saying it was not possible to make allowances for his age. “You are entrenched in the criminal justice system,” she said, before handing down the sentence and delivering a threestrikes warning, under which Kuru-Nathan will not be eligible for parole for any further violent offending.
