THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY
Brian, chooks hit the big screen BY SUE NEWMAN
pleased by what he saw on screen, Glassey admits he was super happy with the comments of those at the premier. “Quite a few people came up and said ‘we loved you’.’’ That doesn’t mean he’ll be chasing a movie career. “Nah, I’ll be staying home now, that’s it. It’s time to get back to the real work,” he said. When the credits finished rolling the cast and crew were wined and dined, but knowing they were to appear on breakfast television the next morning meant revelry had to be kept in check, Glassey said. Yesterday, with the excitement of the premier behind him it was back to business in the poultry run.

It’s official, Ashburton’s chook man, Brian Glassey, is a star. On Tuesday night his secret life as a man who loves chooks was revealed on the big screen when the movie Pecking Order premiered in Christchurch. Glassey along with several other members of the Christchurch Poultry Society have become accidental stars for doing what comes naturally to them – raising and showing good birds. And no one is more surprised than Glassey that his hobby captured the imagination of Kiwi movie maker Slavko Martinov, but two years later, that hobby is now the stuff of movies. In an 80 minute documentary Pecking Order tells the tale of a power struggle for the top job in the Christchurch Poultry Club and the ongoing rivalries on the show bench. At Tuesday’s premier, the red carpet was rolled out, the photographers were on hand and the show’s stars – sans birds – became part of the glitz and glamour of the event. Along with his fellow stars, he was feted, his photo was taken countless times. The occasion didn’t warrant a new suit, but Glassey admits to buying a new pair of trousers and a tie with chooks on it. Glassey took it all in his stride. “I thought the whole thing was pretty good; it didn’t worry me, but finding the place wasn’t easy for a country bumpkin. I was a bit nervous at the start as I didn’t know what to expect but as it got rolling, I thought, this is okay,” he said. He’s still chuckling about the film’s opening – a pitch black theatre with just the sound of chooks clucking. It made him feel right at home, he said.
