Mount Hutt College students are scrambling to come up with a new plan in the wake of a court ruling which brought plans for the school’s traditional afterball party to an abrupt end. Mount Hutt and Ashburton colleges were advised of the decision on Monday when police wrote to all Canterbury secondary school principals. The letter included a warning that those organising BYO parties with an entry fee faced fines of up to $20,000 – irrespective of the age of participants. Community alcohol and drug service Acads had successfully run after-ball parties for both schools for almost two decades, with the aim of mitigating the risks associated with private parties. Under the Acads formula, students were limited to six standard alcoholic drinks and had to be inside the party venue within 20 minutes of the ball end-
ing. Up to 30 volunteers helped run the events, where bottled water, food and transport home was provided. The events also offered an opportunity to educate students about responsible drinking and personal safety, Acads manager Chris Clark said. The decision will impact on revellers nationwide, however just a fortnight from the big day, the Mount Hutt ball committee is running out of time to make alternative arrangements. The committee hopes to press on with the “when I grow up” themed party, sans alcohol and is working with the school’s youth mentor Juanita Richards to this end. Committee member Emma Luscombe said there were concerns some students would plan private parties. “Parents are also worried about the possibility of out-of-control parties,” she said. “The organised after-ball party was an opportunity to experience social
drinking in a safe environment before we leave home next year.” Parents and caregivers of students at both colleges have been advised of their obligations in hosting parties for under 18-year-olds. Ashburton police Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said the Acads team had done a good job of changing the culture of youth parties in the district over the years. He said it was important to remember young people have been seriously injured and killed after attending parties and events where alcohol had been flowing. “With this decision and the rules around health and safety, individuals and organisations will be held accountable for any negative incident that occurs at an event they plan and formally support,” he said.
