MPs meet in Ashburton P4
After more than a decade of waiting, Mid Cantabrians can finally enjoy their new $35 million sports centre. Over 1000 people turned out to see Deputy Prime Minister Bill English officially open the EA Networks Centre on Saturday afternoon. Invited guests and members of the public watched with eager anticipation as officials prepared to officially open the centre’s doors for the first time. Ashburton District Mayor Angus McKay called the event a “real community milestone”. “This is a history-making event in the great Ashburton District,” he told the crowd. “Current and future generations now have a state-of-the-art
facility that offers experiences unique to New Zealand.” Mr McKay told the crowd that the complex is fit for purpose for a population of at least 50,000 people, which will ensure the facility will be able to cater to future population growth. Mr English, who later described the centre as “flash”, believed the new facility would see a rise in people taking part in physical exercise. He joked that he would suggest the Prime Minister test the new gym when he arrived in Ashburton for a conference, saying the PM needed a bit of “toning up”. He then cut the ribbon to rapturous applause. The pool and sports complex has been in the works since 2001, when consultation on the project first began.
Fast-forward 14 years and the public can now enjoy the impressive new facility. It’s been a long road to get to this point, with controversy over its location and cost at times overshadowing the project. However the community backed the complex and managed to meet an ambitious $5m fundraising target. While the centre did not open for public use until yesterday, hundreds of visitors eagerly queued up on Saturday to check out the new facility. The centre features four swimming pools, a steam room and spa, a full gymnasium, a stadium, meeting rooms, and a soon-to-be-opened café.
