Among the best in his business

Apprentice painter Mick Keepa is amongst the best in his business.

The third year apprentice and former Mount Hutt College student works for Matt Young in his Paintcraft business in Ashburton – the whole workplace was celebrating on Friday when Keepa was named as one of three finalists in the painting and decorating apprentice of the year competition.

Keepa will head to the Master Painters annual conference in the North Island in May, with his employer, where the winner will be announced.

The 26-year-old now lives in Christchurch and commutes for his job with Paintcraft. He said he was thrilled to be in the top three and was passionate about the industry.

He says he fell into painting by accident while working for his uncle after leaving school. The work grew on him and when an opportunity came to become an apprentice with Young, he jumped at the chance.

The company does a range of work, on new and existing prem-

ises, and Keepa said it could be challenging. He was involved in creating a pressed tin look for a special ceiling and used embossed wallpaper and metallic paint: “That was pretty cool and something different.”

As well as the practical aspects of the job, he has also completed three years of theory and class work that is part of the apprentice pathway.

He hopes one day to run his own painting business.

Employer Young said Keepa had blossomed in the trade though his interest and ability was clear from the start.

“Pretty quickly I saw he was going to fit in well.”

He said Keepa’s portfolio was a video presentation that made a huge impression on the judges.

The apprentice of the year competition is about raising awareness of the trade, not only within the fraternity, but with customers and the general public. It is a test of an apprentice’s all-round skills.

The finalists receive a full set of brushware and free flights and accommodation to the conference in May; the winner will take home a portable spray unit.

Wakanui Beach survey discovers rare butterflies

Two rare butterfly species have been found at Wakanui Beach, highlighting the need to enhance and restore the area’s vegetation and habitats, a biodiversity advisor says.

Brian Patrick was commissioned by the Ashburton District Council to carry out an insect survey at Wakanui Beach and discovered the area was a treasure trove of insect life and indigenous plants.

The rare butterflies were Rauparaha’s copper, a species formerly found between Kaiapoi and Geraldine.

Very few populations are known today, but the one at Wakanui is significant in number.

The second was the Canterbury boulder copper.

A total of 52 insect species were recorded at the beach.

Weed control was badly needed at the beach, but care had to be taken if weeds were removed that vegetation that was important for bird and insect life was

not removed as well, Patrick said.

“At the end of the day, the looks don’t matter, that’s not the most important thing, the plant is.”

He recommended the council also looked at a native planting programme and that interpretive boards should be erected to tell the story of the beach and its flora and fauna.

His survey was carried out over just one day and one night, but an additional three surveys over a year were needed to obtain a true picture of the insect life on the site, he said.

Council to extend wheelie bin service

Hundreds of households around the Ashburton District will, later this year, have the advantage of an urban rubbish collection.

This week Ashburton District councillors agreed to extend the district’s new wheelie bin rubbish and recycling service to include households not currently receiving a collection service.

Beneficiaries of the new service will be home owners at Lake Hood, Hinds, Fairton, Winslow and on the outskirts of Ashburton, Rakaia and Methven.

Two public meetings were held and a survey carried out.

Support for accessing the service was overwhelming, 74 per cent in favour.

The only area where residents were not so keen on the idea was Fairton where 20 households wanted the service while 27 did not.

From the outset the option to extend the service had been an all or nothing offer, council waste recovery manager Craig Goodwin said.

“I hope councillors realise the importance of having everyone included in the service,” he told councillors.

“One of the things I’m very concerned about is that if we set a precedent where people can pull in or out it makes it much

more difficult to get things done in the future. We still have food waste collections, user-pays and green waste to look at,” he said.

While the price would not change if the extended area was not included, in the future if the council decided to bring more areas into the collection net, the new tender would be significantly higher, Goodwin said.

“These prices have been obtained in a highly competitive commercial setting. This company was very, very keen to keep a footprint in the Canterbury area.”

The tender has been let to Envirowaste, the company currently running Ashburton’s resource recovery park.

Councillors were unanimous at the service delivery meeting in supporting the extension of the wheelie bin service to outlying areas, but the deal still has to be signed off at the next full council meeting on April 6.

The service is due to start on September 1 and is likely to add $196 a year to rates’ bills. Currently property owners pay a $57 rate charge for their rubbish collection plus the cost of official council bags, $150 a year if one bag is used each week.

Bins will come with a microchip that identifies the property they belong to and this will eventually be used when a userpays system is introduced.

Renovations change access Temporary changes at Ashburton Hospital mean there will be no public access to the new ambulance bay and surrounding area for six weeks, starting on Monday.

Ashburton Health Services general manager Bernice Marra said the area would be fenced off to enable Bradfords to demolish the old ambulance bay and building developments in this area.

“All patients will need to access the hospital from the Elizabeth Street main hospital entrance, 24 hours per day, seven days per week,” she said.

“This includes patients presenting by ambulance.”

Ambulances will access the hospital via the front entrance by the main reception area.

They will take patients through the main corridor to the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU), entering

The current car parks marked ‘drop-off’ at the front of the hospital will be reserved for the ‘transport ambulance’. This will be a minimum of two parking bays.

“The wheelchair access park will remain and other parks will be marked and regularly checked to ensure these are kept free for the transfer ambulance,” she said.

■ ARCTIC ULTRA RACE

Cold comfort; 560km to go Mid Canterbury dairy farmer Greg Roadley is about to lay eyes on some of the most spectacular views on the planet.

He and 19 other brave extreme racers started on a 560km mission across the Arctic at 6am today; only a handful will finish and Roadley is determined to be among them.

After leaving the start line at Eagle Plains today, he is now heading north in a brutal eight-

day race that will finish on the edge of the Beaufort Sea. If the weather allows, he will see some of the most stunning but inhospitable landscapes in the world. However the temperature will be -50 degrees, he must keep his skin covered for fear of frostbite and try to make headway in places with names like Hurricane Alley.

The athletes will trek along the Dempster ice highway, where

trucks are regularly blown over and humans caught in the elements forced to crawl.

With little respite from the cold and wind, Roadley will tow a small sled with life-sustaining equipment, including food, clothing and a sleeping bag.

Roadley’s wife Rachel said farewell to her husband at Whitehorse, where she will wait until the race is over. He has no communication equipment but

is wearing a tracker so she can see his progress.

On their way to the start line, the athletes stopped at Dawson to partake in a long-held cocktail tradition associated with the ultra race.

The cocktail comprises a shot of Yukon Jack Whiskey with a black, dissected toe in it – the athletes must drink the whiskey, fast or slow, and their lips must touch the toe.

Future of water ‘a number one concern’

At mid-day on Tuesday traffic will grind to a halt in many parts of the country as rallies and marches of protest are staged against the sale and export of New Zealand water.

And those rallies and marches are being held, thanks to the efforts of one woman, Jen Branje.

She led Ashburton’s fight against the sale of land with a water consent to a water bottling company. Locally that became known as the Bung the Bore Lot 9 campaign, but nationally the fight to stop water sales is being fought under the New Zealand Water Forum banner.

The Ashburton sale was canned but the consent is still tied to the site and Branje says her fight will continue locally to ensure it is either withdrawn or never activated.

Branje now lives in Invercargill, but her role in water issues continues. When it’s suggested she has become the national face of the people’s water angst, she dismisses the title, but she admits that the fight is one that cannot be stopped.

Yesterday, she stopped off in Ashburton on her journey to Wellington where she will present a scroll of messages and a 16,000 plus signature Save Our Water petition to Parliament.

At the same time as the scroll and petition are presented,

rallies of support will be held around New Zealand.

It doesn’t matter where you are in New Zealand, the future of water is a number one concern, she said.

“Because of the economics of dairying no one wants to kick up a storm because the almighty dollar seems to be more important. One cow produces the same amount of effluent as 14 people and we’ve got five million dairy cows in New Zealand.”

When the Lot 9 row erupted people may have been aware of issues around dropping levels in underground aquifers, but that one issue pricked the national conscience around water, Branje said.

“This kick-started it. Are we to be commended or growled at, I don’t know, but we did raise the whole awareness around water.

There are now so many little lobby groups around New Zealand fighting for water and raising concerns.”

When the scroll and petition are delivered on Tuesday, Branje says her job will be done. She’s given almost two years to the fight and while she won’t be walking away, it’s time for someone else to take up the leadership mantle, she said.

“It’s time for the younger generation to pick this up now, it’s their turn. We’ve become the go-to group for water issues in New Zealand and I can no longer

Witnesses sought Police are continuing their search for anyone who may have crossed paths with a woman who was sexually assaulted as she walked home after concert.

Playground ‘for games, not e-games’

Ashburton Intermediate School has gone further than switching off its wifi to keep students off their devices at break times.

As the school starts to encourage pupils to bring their own devices for classroom learning, it has introduced a rule that these are locked away during play times.

Additionally, the intermediate does not allow its students to have cellphones on campus, and it employs a sports co-ordinator to run playground games and activities each afternoon play break.

The Taranaki high school of Francis Douglas Memorial College, for Year 7 to 13s, last week hit headlines when it decided to turn off its wireless internet for the 45 minutes of break times throughout the day.

Ashburton Intermediate principal Brent Gray said the rule for cellphones at the school was that they were handed into the office each day. Generally about 60 of the school’s 420 students handed phones in each day.

“The idea is if more and more

people bring them it’s a resource they can use at school and at home,” Gray said.

However, it was important stu-

dents interacted socially and were physically active at break times, so devices were allowed only during class time.

Meanwhile, pupils being glued to their devices is not a problem at either of Mid Canterbury’s two secondary schools.

Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs said staff monitored students during break times, and if they were using devices too much they were encouraged not to.

The school is increasing BYOD across the whole school this year.

There had been discussion on how to ensure students continued to engage socially and while a wifi ban could never be completely ruled out, it was decided to continue with dealing with the issue on an individual basis.

At Ashburton College, BYOD is an expectation this year for students in Years 11, 12 and 13.

New principal Ross Preece said his first impressions were that pupils being glued to their devices in break times was not an issue at the school.

At any rate, he could see a problem with turning off the wi-fi at break times, as this would disadvantage staff needing to access the internet for work purposes.

A night of variety, talent, energy and fun is all set to go at Ashburton College.

Come March 15, 12 acts will be ready to take the stage in Ash Dance, an event that has been a regular fixture on the college calendar for eight years.

Organiser, Claire Robertshaw, said a variety of acts will be taking to the stage, with large groups through to solo performances on the cards.

The idea behind Ash Dance is to provide the opportunity for students to showcase their dancing skills.

These dancing skills can come from formal classes, or ‘free-style’ for personal enjoyment and expression.

All dance styles are included as it is seen as a fantastic way to showcase the cultural diversity that is present at the college.

Groups performing on the night include, Kapa Haka, Polyfest, the Filipino hip-hop group, New Generation, and contempary Indian performances.

The event will be held in the College auditorium, beginning at 7pm, with a gold coin donation at the door.

Failproof sound system coming

The EA Networks centre’s aquacise classes have become a victim of their own success.

When the centre opened 22 months ago 12 classes a week were held with attendances at most about 10 people; today the centre caters for 25 weekly classes and attendances at each range from 18 to 25.

Crucial to the success of each class is the sound system that relays instructor instructions to participants and provides music to exercise to.

Given the higher than anticipated level of use, the centre’s sound system can no longer cope, said assistant manager Richard Wood.

“It’s failing regularly because it wasn’t a purpose built system and we need a more reliable one,” he told Ashburton District councillors at this week’s service delivery committee meeting.

“We’re looking to put in place a system that’s designed for the purpose. We’re getting numbers of complaints from our clients because of the failing system,” he said.

A fit for purpose sound system

The current pool sound system is failing and pool management have put their case for a new purpose built unit to council.

PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN will cost $11,000, but given the revenue generated by the aquacise classes – $125,000 a year, the expenditure could be justified, Wood said.

“We’re trying to put something solid in place that we can rely on.”

The new system will be funded from the council’s contingency reserve account.

It comes on top of $38,000 approved by councillors during budget discussions last week for sound system improvements in the centre.

Free parking period in East St extended In the four months since Ashburton’s East Street free parking trial started, 241,364 motorists have enjoyed an hour of free shopping.

The trial came at the request of Ashburton’s retailers who said the town’s faulty pay and display machines were turning customers away in droves.

They asked the council to install smart meters in each parking space and to run a one-hour free parking trial for a year.

That trial was estimated to come at a cost of $58,000 in parking fines and fees, but the opposite has happened and for the first four months the council has earned $16,000 more through the free parking scheme.

During the period 5464 overstayers were identified through the smart meters.

On Thursday district councillors decided they would allow the parking trial to continue after it was due to cease in mid October, while they assessed whether or not it would become a permanent feature of the CBD.

Joining forces to protect The Ashburton River is one of the most important braided rivers in Canterbury due to the nationally significant populations of birdlife it supports.

Unfortunately these birds are up against it in the survival stakes – hedgehogs, cats, rats, weasels, stoats and even other birds take their toll, not to mention the negative influence of humans, dogs and flooding.

E

nvironment Canterbury, Department of Conservation, Forest & Bird Ashburton, Fish and Game, iwi representatives, Braid, Ashburton 4WD club members and other interested parties have joined forces to come up with a bird protection plan for the river.

The aim is to improve the state of the river and increase its shorebird population. The efforts are paying off for the nationally endangered black-billed gull – which, with a national population decrease of 75 per cent in the past 25 years, has earned the dubious status of becoming the world’s rarest gull species.

The Ashburton River bed is a significant breeding ground for the gulls and other threatened species.

An analysis of shorebird count data collected annually since 1981 has led to the identification of three reaches of the Ashburton River that support particularly high numbers of shorebirds during the breeding season (August to February).

Up to 5000 black-billed gulls inhabited the riverbed during the 2016-17 breeding season, during which more than 1400 chicks survived to fledgling point.

The largest colony, just downstream from the State Highway 1 bridge in Ashburton, had the highest fledgling rate of 60 per cent.

While the close proximity of the colony to the township has helped raise awareness of the species’ plight, it has also attracted attention of the wrong kind.

Over recent years the colony has been subject to a number of attacks – in May 2013, a local man was jailed for a month for driving into the midst of the nesting birds.

This season teenagers were caught red-handed throwing stones at helpless chicks.

The shorebird habitat management plan proposes a series of actions focused on reducing the impacts of a range threats on these key reaches of river.

The gulls nest in open gravels in the riverbed but a lack of bigger floods in recent years has seen weeds encroach on large tracts of suitable nesting sites.

A spraying programme killed the weeds, but left the dead stalks which the birds also avoided.

An artificial island, created in September, was deemed a success, however it has been proposed a bigger version would improve survival statistics.

ECan biodiversity officer Donna Field said the possibility of construction of two islands was on the drawing board.

Although the gulls initially shied clear of the island built in September last year, flooding pushed them off a nesting colony established further downstream and they found the island to their liking. This year the plan is to begin construction of islands well before the birds arrive, possibly as early as July.

Not surprisingly, a common message received from all the stakeholders who had input into the management plan was that the current high rates of water abstraction from the Ashburton River for irrigation is likely to be

contributing to the impact that woody weeds, pest animals and people are having on the river’s shorebirds.

The recently-adopted plan has a seven-year operational lifespan, and it is recommended that it be reviewed and updated in July, 2023, following the implementation of the first increased environmental minimum flow limit to be imposed on the river set in

ECan’s Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan.

While much of the public focus has been on the gulls, the river is host to a diverse range of other birds, including black-fronted terns, white-fronted terns, banded dotterels, black fronted dotterels, pied stilts, pied oystercatchers, red-billed gulls and spotted shags.

Fencing, signage and trapping programmes put in place over

recent years will have undoubtably served to protect these species as well.

Field said more focus will be put on the rivermouth this coming breeding season, to find out more about what species are using that part of the river, and when.

The trapping programmes will continue to ramp up, not only during the breeding season, but year-round if possible.

HOW THE GULLS FARED

A

bout 5000 black-billed gulls spent the breeding season in the Ashburton riverbed during the 2016-17 breeding season, the results of a river bird monitoring survey indicate.

The critically endangered birds, classified as the world’s rarest gull, raised more than 1400 chicks to fledgling age (point of flight).

At the time of survey an estimated 10 per cent of chicks were still to fledge, however delaying the headcount would miss the majority of chicks which flew before the beginning of February.

Environment Canterbury employed Keystone Ecology consultants to monitor four gull colonies, along with about 40 black-fronted terns, nesting in the riverbed from November to mid-January.

A gull colony just downstream from the State Highway 1 bridge was the most successful, with a 60 per cent fledgling rate, compared to 39 per cent across all four sites.

Black-fronted terns didn’t fare so well, with none of the 25 hatched chicks under observation reaching fledgling.

Cameras were set up at the two main gull colonies, near the bridge and at the river mouth to monitor disturbances by predators, humans and floods.

A group of Hakatere Huts residents trapped 61 hedgehogs and three rats on the north bank of the river during the bird breeding season, while members of the Ashburton 4WD Club eliminated 111 hedgehogs, three weasels, a stoat and seven rats in the riverbed, running a line of 47 traps.

Harrier hawks, herons, spur wing plovers and black-backed gulls also took their toll on the nesting bird colonies.

pan and cook for 5-7 minutes.

Now add the rice and stir to coat in the mixture. Add the sliced chorizo and browned chicken into the pan. Add the saffron in its water and add enough of the stock so that it almost covers the rice. Stir to blend and then don’t stir again.

■ Bring to the boil, then turn the heat down and simmer gently for about 20 minutes until the rice is cooked and nearly all of

the stock absorbed. If it is looking too dry and the rice is still not cooked through, sneak in some boiling water by pouring it around the sides of the pan.

■ About 5 minutes from the end of cooking, add the shellfish and prawns in their shells. Taste it at this stage and consider whether you need to add more salt or pepper. Continue to cook until the shells open and the prawns are cooked, about 3-5 minutes. Gently stir the ingredients around a little.

■ Bring the paella pan to the table. Scatter with lots of chopped parsley and lemon wedges and serve directly from the pan.

■ NB: If any of your shellfish don’t open during the cooking, throw them away as they may be trouble!

Skipper the glue for NZ batting A full evacuation of the ground due to a fire alarm only added to the intrigue of an engaging contest between New Zealand and South Africa on the third day of their first test at Dunedin.

The Black Caps took a first innings lead for the first time in seven tests against the Proteas, stretching back to 2012.

The hosts’ 33-run advantage had been turned into a five-run deficit by stumps, as the tourists moved to 38 for one, but it could be in vain; rain is forecast to disrupt the match over the weekend.

Kane Williamson delivered another Atlas-like performance with a 16th test century which helped carry his team to 341 in response to the Proteas’ 308.

Williamson made his 16th test century, equalling Ross Taylor on New Zealand’s all-time list, and leaving him one short of Martin Crowe’s 17-ton record.

At 26 years and 214 days he is the third youngest player to the milestone after India’s Sachin Tendulkar (24 years and 335 days) and England’s Alastair Cook (26 years and 11 days).

Some company, not that Williamson will give a hoot. He’s more interested in winning matches.

The right-hander was a portrait of patience in 130 runs from 241 balls in 383 minutes before Kagiso Rabada had him caught behind.

The 21-year-old pace bowler generated the necessary bounce and subsequent surprise with the

second new ball to get the New Zealand captain nibbling at a good length delivery.

Williamson’s sense of duty saw him wait 27 balls and 40 minutes before adding to his 78 from the previous evening.

BJ Watling offered support with his first half-century in 14 test innings. His last was 83 not out in the second test against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in August.

That was reinforced by Neil Wagner’s 32 off as many deliveries, and Ross Taylor heaving a six to finish 15 not out on his injured right calf muscle.

South Africa had reached 14 for one when a fire alarm saw the main stand emptied.

Fire engines arrived and the

whole venue was asked to disperse. Members of the 3296-strong crowd chanted “show me the fire”.

Play resumed after a 20-minute delay.

The morning almost matched the drama of the afternoon.

Morne Morkel had Jimmy Neesham caught behind, but the delivery came under scrutiny as to whether it was a no-ball.

Third umpire Rod Tucker thought not, but there was little if anything between Morkel’s boot and the painted line.

Conversely, Watling was given out abw (arm-before-wicket) on three off his 28th ball delivered

by Keshav Maharaj with a 1970s disco dancing appeal.

Williamson wanted to have an

immediate word, and his hunch that the ball was missing the stumps proved correct. The decision was reversed when the tracker trajectory boinged like a tennis ball over the stumps.

That rejection did not deter Maharaj. He spun his way to his first five-wicket bag in his fifth test.

The slow left-arm orthodox was the best bowler, but Morkel was unquestionably the crowd favourite. A raucous section of the embankment encouraged him to “skull” his water at third man. He duly obliged, signing off by popping the empty vessel on his head boat-race style.

With David Boon as match referee there was little chance of a censure.

Drummond earns a start Halfback Mitchell Drummond will make his first start in more than six months when the Crusaders tackle the Reds in Brisbane tonight.

Drummond, who broke his left fibula in a Canterbury training drill last September, said it had been a tough road back to full fitness.

“It’s never nice being injured and I am not a very good watcher,” he said.

“We have got a really good medical team here who helped me through the whole process and I am loving (being able to) put the boots on every day and running around back on the grass.”

Drummond made his return off the bench in last week’s comefrom-behind 30-27 win over the Highlanders, a game they looked to have thrown away when they trailed 6-27.

“It was pretty awesome.

“Obviously for me personally, it was great just to be back out on the footy field,” Drummond said.

“A game like that does massive

The former Wallaby winger had a strong showing for the secondtier Crusader Knights last week, and assistant coach Jason Ryan said he had done a lot of work off the field.

“He had a good amount of game time, which was a positive, and he played really well,” Ryan said.

“He has had a bit of a niggle.

“We’ve done a lot of work off the grass so even though he has had that, it has been a chance for Diggers to understand our game plans and our shape.”

Time for West to stand up for the Blues

By GreGor Paul There’s a lot to like about the side the Blues have picked to play the Highlanders tonight.

There are big men to handle the set-piece; ball carriers across the park; direct runners, big tacklers and plenty of men with the ability to produce a touch of magic.

But there is a missing piece, or at least an element that no one can be sure is there.

Where is the control and direction going to come from?

There’s so much weaponry and yet no proven commander at the helm who can use all that is available.

This is nothing new to the Blues – they have struggled to find a dominant tactical general for much of the past decade.

For much of that period, though, a lack of tactical control was just one of many issues.

That’s why these next few weeks, months even, are so important for Ihaia West.

He made it to the Blues in 2014 through the back door – coming in as injury cover for Baden Kerr and then winning a contract the following year.

Since becoming a full-time member of the Blues, he has been a middle of the road performer.

He has never obviously set his team alight, nor has he appeared to be out of his depth.

He has chugged along – doing enough to continue to be of interest but not so much that he has established himself as a must-have.

He owes his continued selection as much to the lack of alter-

The next month or so of rugby is, therefore, going to be huge in

the context of his career.

Now is the time for West to take a grip of what is clearly a good Blues team.

Tonight at Eden Park, he needs to steer the Blues into the right places on the field.

The pace of local derbies is frenetic and relentless and it has to be factored in that the Highlanders are coming to Auckland on the back of two defeats and serious motivation to avoid making it three.

The key to winning these intense games is control, discipline and accuracy.

That starts with the forwards and their ability to win the ball and then deliver it on the front foot.

That was a major problem for the Blues last week against the Chiefs and coach Tana Umaga has made it clear this week that the first priority for his players is to first get the ball and look after it.

“They put pressure on us in the forward pack and we can’t get our game going if we can’t get set piece, so that’s been a big workon for us,” he said.

“We have to get into our structures that we want to play but depending on the weather, that could be different to what the tactics are.”

If the forwards can do their bit, then West will be asked to use possession wisely.

He’ll have to show he can mix his game up with the right balance of kicking, running and passing.

He’ll be asked to pull the right levers and find a way to use the running power of George Moala and Rieko Ioane in the midfield and also find space for Rene Ranger to exploit.

Blue cards launched New Zealand Rugby is cracking down on concussion, introducing a new blue card initiative across all adult rugby games in its 14 largest provincial unions. Referees who suspect a player has been concussed will issue a blue card. The player must leave the field and can’t return until they have completed a series of mandatory steps, including a three-week stand down from training and playing. NZR’s head of community rugby, Brent Anderson said referees would be trained to recognise the signs of suspected concussion.

Slave song slammed American academics have lashed out at English rugby fans for their use of the black slave anthem Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. The song was first adopted by rugby crowds in 1988, after England completed an impressive victory over Ireland. But Josephine Wright, a professor of music and black studies in Ohio, has slammed the insensitivity of sports fans as “unfortunate”. “Such cross-cultural appropriations of US slave songs betray a total lack of understanding of the historical context in which those songs were created by the American slave,” she said. - NZME

Beale coming home Wallabies star Kurtley Beale has confirmed he is to leave Wasps and return to Australia at the end of the English domestic rugby season. The former NSW Waratahs centre is currently the highest earning player in England after signing a $1.5 million one-year deal, with the option of a second season, last May. Beale had to wait until December to make his debut for Wasps after suffering a serious knee injury during a Super Rugby clash just hours after signing for the English giants.

England’s current streak of 17 wins has one obvious omission however – the All Blacks. It’s improves your chances of creating a winning run if you don’t play the best team.

The Ashburton College First XI will be out to stamp their authority early when they return to Timaru today for the second day of their match against Timaru Boys’ High School.

Heading into the day’s play with a 210-run lead and just eight wickets left to claim victory, the Ashburton College bowling attack will be fully aware of Timaru’s likely objective, which will be to dig in and play for a draw.

They have the luxury of having two of their batsmen back in the shed however after Will Graham and then Ben Niles claimed wickets

in the final six overs of last weekend’s play conceding just the one, solitary, run.

The Ashburton effort was boosted by a hundred to Gareth Hunt who left the Timaru bowlers with no answer to his time at the crease as he moved Ashburton into a winnable position at the end of the first innings.

Niles, who claimed three wickets in the first innings, will again be a vital cog in the key to success.

He managed to remove a number of Timaru Boys’ star batsmen and will be relied on heavily to repeat the dose when he gets chucked the ball this morning.

Tommy Simsek said: “At the moment Martin isn’t fit to play and the time we give him now to strengthen his hamstrings will play a big role in mitigating future risk.

“We’ve put a programme in place to make sure that Martin can return to full strength and we’ll continue to monitor him closely.”

Cricket boards make peace

BY ROB FORSAITH The chief executives of Australia and India’s cricket boards have made peace in Mumbai, agreeing to move on from a series of controversial incidents that marred the spiteful second test.

Captains Steve Smith and Virat Kohli were at risk of being charged by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Cricket Australia (CA) respectively, as is allowed under the sport’s code of conduct.

Smith infuriated Kohli and the BCCI when he looked to the dressing room for advice on whether to review an lbw dismissal, which is illegal.

Kohli insulted the tourists in a postmatch tirade, making unsubstantiated allegations they used the same tactic throughout the game. CA chief executive James Sutherland slammed Kohli’s claim as “out-

rageous” earlier this week, while the BCCI responded in a statement that praised its captain’s conduct as “exemplary”.

The International Cricket Council and match referee had cleared all 22 players involved in the heated clash, urging everybody to move on.

But the brinkmanship that threatened to turn ugly ended when Sutherland and counterpart Rahul Johri thrashed out their differences at the BCCI headquarters.

The two organisations released a joint statement yesterday.

“BCCI will withdraw the complaint filed with ICC with an expectation that the two captains will meet prior to the Ranchi Test and commit to lead their teams by example, and play the rest of the series in the right spirit, demonstrating that the players from both teams are true ambassadors for their respective countries.”

Record books re-written

A cloud of dust has stirred from the Ashburton College athletic records books as two long-standing records fell last Thursday.

Mia Pearson and Sophie Adams were the young athletes to re-write history, breaking the 28-year-old under 14 girls’ high jump and under 15 girls’ shot put records respectively.

Pearson narrowly snuck over the previous record, jumping 1.46m, one centimetre higher than Charlotte Sim’s record of 1.45m, which was set in 1989.

Adams secured her new record in a far more comfortable fashion, with her largest throw eclipsing the 10 metre mark at 10.61m. The previous holder, Julia Fruean, threw 9.69m, a distance which Adams threw past three times.

Both have experience in the world of track and field.

Pearson has been training in athletics since she was five.

“High jump is one of the ones I train in regularly and is one of my favourites,” she said.

Despite breaking the record, it was not her personal best, having jumped 1.53m in the past.

“I’ve always done well in shot put since primary school,” said Adams.

She also did not trouble her personal best with her performance at the finals, having thrown 11.32m in the past.

The pair will now turn their attentions to the Aoraki Athletics in Timaru on Tuesday, with an eye on qualifying for the South Island competition, where finishing in the top five is a target for both.

Paddon up for Mexico Kiwi rally driver Hayden Paddon heads to Mexico’s third round of the FIA World Rally Championship having completed plenty of solid preparation in the preceding weeks.

Paddon and co-driver John Kennard do not underestimate the challenges of the 19-stage Rally, which is based in the city of Leon 400km northwest of Mexico City and began yesterday. A trip down two-wheel memory lane S

o much to talk about on the sporting scene this week; one could choose some easy targets, like the worst cricket commentators in the world (that’s Doully and Styris if it wasn’t obvious already, like really really obvious).

The Crusaders have won their first two games; that’s the first time since they last won the thing back in 2008, surely an omen?

Or the start of the V8 season, with three fantastic Kiwi drivers right at the top of the tree in the Clipsal 500 season-opener, with plenty more to come from them.

But no, instead we’ll stray into the motorcycling arena, just because we can.

If you are into motorbikes, more specifically of the Japanese variety, then there’s a place to add to your must-visit list.

Mike Pero has long been a big name in the Canterbury motorsport scene, but many folks don’t know that in his earlier years his greatest achievements were on two wheels.

In fact he was six times national road racing champion, which puts him up in reasonably good company for a start, and even set a land speed record (238 km/h) in 1979 on his 350 Yamaha.

So if he puts together a collection of bikes from the past, his own and lots and lots of other folks’, then fair chance it’s going to be worth looking at.

And that’s just what he’s done.

Set your compass (or Google Maps) to 1 Hawthornden Road, just around the corner from the Avonhead shops, and take the opportunity to inspect a superb display of motorcycling history.

If, as a huge portion of their target market is (and our little party was last week) your intention is to wallow in memories of a two-wheel-themed past, then you’ve come to the right place.

Mr Pero and his merry men have most of the classic bikes from the ‘70s and ‘80s on show, and there’s a fair chance your model is in there somewhere.

One of our group marvelled as to how the little Honda CB350 managed to carry four people all the way to Rakaia one night when

a car broke down; another noted the Kawasaki 350 S2 on show didn’t have a disc on the front like his did, but it didn’t matter so much either way back in the day because the front wheel wasn’t on the ground all that much anyway.

A beautiful example of the Honda CB750, the bike that marked the advent of Japanese superbikes and the decline of the Triumphs, Nortons and BSAs is there front and centre, and a Kawasaki Z1000 Turbo can’t help but catch the eye.

There was one of those resident in the Rakaia Kawasaki shop for ages; I had always thought it was a one-off mad machine from someone’s weird idea that a bike already capable of insane speeds should be made to go even faster, but it is in fact a distinctive, if very rare, factory model.

Many Ashburton blokes of a certain age will remember the arrival of the grey-with-bits-of-red Honda XL250 on the local scene – well, they should, because there was a whole big flock of them scorching around this town for a couple of years in the mid-70s.

They were only usurped when I think it was Robbie Bell and Kevin Frasier turned it all up a notch with the ‘massive’ XL350 – I still remember one of them doing

donuts on the nice new surface of East Street, knobbly tyres and all.

There’s a mint-condition example of the 250 on the floor (sitting just beside a neat little Elsinore screamer), but that’s just a tiny few of the heaps of bikes on display, Suzukis and Yamahas aplenty for fans of those marques.

And that’s just the road bikes; there’s a vast array of racing models, some rarer than the proverbial hen’s teeth. The hidden gems came from all sorts of places; classic bikes have a way of hiding in the garage corner covered with a tarp for years, before someone discov-

ers them and does the right thing.

It’s very early days.

The Pero gallery is already as big as the council will allow it (it’s actually at his home), and the cafe and various other plans are still on the drawing board.

There’s a museum in Invercargill boasting over 300 bikes, and a whole lot more besides; but it won’t be long before the Christchurch location will be equally recognised as a destination for bikers from throughout New Zealand.

Oh, and there’s no Britten – yet.

Definitely on the agenda though.

In brief Big bucks for Ellison An NFL player with a strong New Zealand heritage is set for newfound riches after signing a lucrative contract with the New York Giants.

Rhett Ellison, the son of Kiwi three time Super Bowl champion Riki Ellison, has reportedly signed a four-year, $US18 million deal with the Giants. Ellison has significant Kiwi links. In addition to his Dad being the first ever New Zealander to play in the NFL, Ellison is the grandnephew of the first captain of the All Blacks, Thomas Ellison, and related to former All Black Tamati Ellison.

Swimmers hit top form Ashburton swimmers produced some exceptional results at last weekend’s Division Two competition in Rotorua.

With spots at the Nationals, later on this month, up for grabs members of the Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim team stood up and asked to be recognised.

Josh Giles, one of the district’s risings stars in the pool, recorded some incredible results and put up times that will see him

competing at the Nationals.

He won the 400 metre freestyle event, silver in the 200 metre backstroke, 100 metre free style, 400 individual medley and claimed bronze in the 50 metre freestyle.

Aimee Elliot was in good form, picking up a gold in 800 metre freestyle and silver in the 100 metre freestyle.

Blake Farr, who was competing for the first time at the level of

competition grabbed gold in the 100 metre free style and a bronze in the 50 metre freestyle – gaining national qualification in the process.

Andrew Peel picked up three medals for his weekend, all silver coming in the 400 metre freestyle, 400 metre individual medley and the 1500 metre freestyle.

Leigh Harrison, who was also competing at a high level event for the first time made some

fantastic personal best times in her 200 metre individual medley and 100 metre individual medley while Isabelle Wilson gained personal bests in the 200 metre backstroke, 200 metre individual medley and 100 metre backstroke.

The results were really positive for the Ashburton squad as they continue to build and record impressive results around the country.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg admitted Tim Simona’s charity hoaxes that were part of their investigation into his betting scandal left him “sick in the stomach”. Taupau to tackle illegal hits

BY MATT ENCARNACION Manly want hitman Martin Taupau to tackle his shoulder charge issues to ensure he stays on the field this NRL season.

Taupau, along with fellow forward Addin Fonua-Blake, will miss the team’s next two matches for no-arms hits in their roundone defeat to Parramatta last week.

Sea Eagles coach Trent Barrett questioned why the shoulder charges were punished more harshly than the $1500 fine for punches, but still told his suspended duo to curb their aggressive instincts.

“You can’t shoulder charge. That’s something that Marty and Addin have got to address in their games because they’re too important for us to miss,” Barrett said yesterday.

“Marty’s one, there was a fair bit of contact there, but Addin’s one was he just lent into him more or less.

“And you don’t get one for a punch. It is a bit of a grey area I suppose.”

The suspensions, together with injuries to Lloyd Perrett and Darcy Lussick, left Barrett scraping the barrel of his front-row depth for today’s round-two clash with South Sydney.

Veteran Nate Myles has been promoted into the starting line-up, while newcomers Jarrad Kennedy and Shaun Lane will come off the bench.

“Obviously it’s not ideal losing the three blokes on top of Lussick.

“It’s just something I’ve got to deal with.

I’m happy with who we’ve brought in,” Barrett said.

Veteran galloper calls time An extraordinary chapter in South Island racing has closed with the retirement of El Chico.

The 12-year-old ended his lengthy and successful career with his fourth placing in the open sprint at Ashburton on Thursday.

“He’s been a lovely horse to work with and you can’t always say that about the good ones,” said partowner Michael Pitman, who trained El Chico with his son Matthew.

“I’ve never had any issues with him and he’s won every season since 2008.

“He’s always tried his best and this preparation he only struck a firm track once.

“Even at Ashburton, Chris Johnson was adamant that he would have won on a better track.”

El Chico was a six race winner when Pitman purchased the son of Stravinsky and he admitted that he

didn’t envisage the horse winning a further 18 races for them.

“I bought him for a modest sum as a five-year-old, thinking he would be a country cups’ horse.

“He’s won $667,000 and basically $600,000 of that as a South Island horse.”

Pitman singled out El Chico ‘s win in last year’s Gr.3 Stewards’ Stakes, his second success in the contest, at odds of $45-1 as a career highlight.

“I was very confident and told everyone to back him – he had worked so well before the race,” he said.

El Chico also won the Gr.3 Easter Cup, the Listed Timaru Stakes three times and the Listed Timaru Cup. He also finished third in the 2012 Gr.1 Telegraph Handicap.

“He’s been a great horse and he enjoys stable life so he’ll be staying here with us,” Pitman said. - NZME

Rain not a problem It’s a case of the wetter the better at Ellerslie today for the aptlynamed Aquamosa in the Sistema Stakes. “We only nominated her because of the forecast and if it got to a heavy track then she would get through the conditions,” trainer Shaune Ritchie said.

Aquamosa ran third last time out in the Gr.3 Phoenix Park Classic on a Slow 8 track at New Plymouth.

Ritchie is also confident Let Her Rip’s chances in the Gr.2 Westbury Classic won’t be hampered by the conditions.

NZME, Fairfax merger decision postponed for a month

By Paul McBeth NZME and Fairfax New Zealand have got another month to convince the Commerce Commission that allowing a merger of the country’s two dominant news publishers is in the public interest.

The regulator yesterday said it had agreed with the companies to extend the deadline on making a final decision on their merger application, which was to have been announced next Wednesday. The decision has been pushed out to April 11.

“The extension was required in order for the commission to properly assess and account for the further information it has obtained and received following its draft determination and confer-

ence,” the regulator said in a statement. “The commission will not be accepting any further public submissions on this authorisation application.”

The extension comes a day after Fairfax NZ chief Simon Tong announced his departure to take a job with ASB Bank, although Australian parent Fairfax Media says it’s looking for a permanent replacement. In the interim, chief operating officer Andrew Boyle is filling in, as he did in 2013 before Tong’s appointment.

The media companies want to stitch their businesses together in an effort to aggregate their resources and run a leaner and more efficient organisation as global digital rivals like Facebook and Google, which don’t generate their own content, gobble the ad-

vertising revenue previously available to print publishers.

In a letter to commission chairman Mark Berry last month, Tong and NZME boss Michael Boggs said they were heartened by the regulator recognising the convergence of media in its decision to reject a tie-up between pay-TV operator Sky Network Television and telecommunications group Vodafone New Zealand, and said that framework should also be used in the Fairfax/NZME merger.

They said the difference between the two deals was that Sky owned premium sports content, but that news doesn’t have a similar protection with “no copyright in the facts” and that “stories can easily be rewritten and published by competitors”.

The regulator’s draft decision

was that authorising the deal’s impact on the diversity of media coverage outweighed the size of expected financial gains. The Commerce Act can authorise anti-competitive deals, provided it’s satisfied “the acquisition will result, or will be likely to result, in such a benefit to the public that it should be permitted”.

Fairfax and NZME have previously downplayed the size of editorial job cuts if a merger gets the go-ahead, saying of the $136.5 million to $218.7 million of quantified benefits over five years in the draft decision, only 10-to-13 per cent of that total would come from “a reduction in duplicated journalist roles”. More recently, they talked up the benefits of allowing a merger as creating a sustainable business that supports

local journalism and contributes to New Zealand’s tax base.

In a separate statement, the media companies said they received a request from the regulator for the extension, which they agreed to as being consistent with “typical practices” of the Commerce Commission.

“There has been a significant amount of information provided to the NZCC by NZME and Fairfax since the Commerce Commission issued its draft determination on the merger in November 2016,” the companies said. “NZME and Fairfax believe this information further substantiates the key arguments set out in the original merger application, which support a clearance or authorisation being granted in respect of their application.”

Listeria found in a supermarket salad Listeria has been found in a supermarket salad.

All LeaderBrand salads have now been recalled, despite the food-borne bacteria being found only in the caesar salad.

The company said it has recalled its entire salad product range, including LeaderBrand Classic Salads, Fresh Plus Salads, Value Bag Salads, Pam’s Fresh Express salads and 100 per cent Fresh Salads from the major supermarkets it supplies.

Countdown, New World and Pak’n Save stock the salads. All salad products distributed to Pita Pit and Subway outlets have also been recalled.

A spokesperson for Subway said they were unaffected, but were withdrawing lettuce and carrot from their stores as a precaution.

Customers were urged not to eat any of the salads bought since March 3 with a best-before date earlier than March 15.

LeaderBrand chief executive Richard Burke said the company learned of the contamination on Thursday.

“While LeaderBrand Caesar Salad is only one of many product lines – and we are confident none of our other products have been affected – we immediately took steps to withdraw all salad products,” he said.

“We emphasise that this is an isolated incident and that as a proudly New Zealand-owned and operated company, we take the health and safety of our customers very seriously. As things stand, we anticipate being able to supply fresh salad products soon. We thank you for your understanding and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

People who bought the salads can return them for a refund.

Listeria can be particularly harmful to vulnerable people, including children under five, adults over 65, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems.

Don’t leave your run too late Megan Gnad

T

he news that a law protecting the rights of New Zealand expats in Australia may not be extended, will have a lot of Kiwis living across the ditch quaking in their beach thongs.

While the Australian Government has given no indication of its plans, an expat lobby group says the law making it easier for Kiwis who arrived in Australia before 2001 to get citizenship, runs out in October.

New Zealanders who moved to Australia before February 26, 2001, can apply for citizenship as permanent residents and they’re warning people to start the process soon as possible in case they miss out.

It is not yet known whether it will be extended and New Zealanders who moved to Australia after the February 2001 cut-off must apply for permanent residency, which is capped.

According to the 2011 Census, there were 187,212 Kiwis in Aussie and 483,398 New Zealandborn people residing in the country.

Morgan Blake started a Facebook page called Protecting Special Category Visa Holders and spoke with Mike Hosking on Newstalk ZB yesterday about the uncertainty.

He raised the issue that although it’s likely it will be replaced with a “different legislative instrument” will people risk “taking a chance or be protected forever”.

Anyone who has been living in Australia since before 2001 has obviously well and truly settled themselves and their families.

The stress and pressure of looming visa worries is nightmarish, especially when your life, work, friend and relationship groups are all built around your new existence.

Experts have said they would be “extremely surprised” if Australia did not roll over the law change, but it’s a fine line between jumping in too early or leaving it too late.

About 200,000 New Zealanders were believed to be living in Australia before 2001 and it is understood 40 per cent had since secured citizenship.

There is, of course, the argument that they should have sorted themselves before now, but a lot can change in 16 years.

Whatever the way the outcome swings, the thought of having to uproot your life and start from the ground up, should make people think twice about leaving it to chance.

Just in case, it may pay to get cracking on the paperwork.

He’s terrified of everyone he doesn’t see regularly. We got him as an adult and he wasn’t socialised.

Love me, love my bike!

I

t wasn’t until last weekend that I worked out why the good people of Ashburton keep looking at me when I ride my motorbike. Originally I thought it was because I was a rising star in the world of educating young minds, but no, it’s because everyone loves my motorbike!

It’s true! I can now put the evidence before you and by the end of this unbiased portrayal of my bike you will agree.

Last weekend I spent some time south of here amongst a lot of motorcyclists and their machines. Not once did anyone look at me or my bike twice. The drivers never came near me!

When I returned to the parched plains of the desert strip town known affectionately as AshVegas, I attracted attention, and then it twigged!

Everyone wants to look at my bike. See God invented man, and man invented the V-Twin, and upon my steel horse I ride.

Below is the evidence that Ash Vegans love my bike: ■ Drivers tailgate me. Yip, especially along the stretch from the bridge to school, I often get tailgated. Obviously drivers want to get up really close and check out the factory-fitted exhaust with its EU compliant catalytic converter. Even when I have a good distance on someone and am travelling

me too. How it works is the driver ahead realises that they are being followed by a bike with 60Nm at 6400rpm.

They then decide to test out the bike by slowly drifting to the left without indicating and then pulling back into the road. After that first test they then make the six-speed, constant mesh transmission guess again by pulling over to the centre line and slowing down. To finish off, the driver makes a sudden left-hand turn into a driveway, really pushing the 90 degree, liquid cooled, four-stroke DOHC motor to its urban limits.

at the speed limit, more often than not, a driver in a company 4WD vehicle speeds up just to get really close to inspect my back wheel. And yes, for those of you who were wondering, that is a Showa mono-shock with rebound and pre-load adjustment on an aluminium rear swing arm.

People pull out in front of me. Now I know why. They want to see for themselves if the mighty Suzuki V-Strom can stop on a dime. Can the big beast, with its 16-bit central processing unit, safely bring me to a halt before I redesign their door panel. The best drivers hesitate, then decide to go at the last minute. Oh the look of surprise when they spot the twin discs on the front bringing the big V-Twin to a halt is priceless.

We play “guess where I’m going?” I love this one because it’s a challenge for

Yip, this is a favourite. I can’t tell you the number of times I have seen drivers texting some twitter on the interweb about my machine.

They come past me with their heads down, focusing on twerking their fingers about the fuel-injected re-tuned 645cc engine that roared past them. This bike must be the most textedabout bike in Ashburton, because I do see numerous people texting when I ride.

Drivers wave to me. So at times when there are queues of cars along West Street or SH1 in Tinwald,

I ride past on the median strip. Now lots of drivers coming the other way wave, flash their lights, or in one case, swerve into my path.

Such is the desirability of my bike, that even drivers headed the other way want to tell me they love it!

Some of the waving is funny though, because not every finger is visible when they wave. Oh well, I just imagine those drivers are from the North Island and perhaps everyone up there waves with just one finger.

So there you have it Asburtonians. It’s true. I know. I ride the most fantastic bike and everyone is really great at trying to get close to it.

The evidence is overwhelming, unless there could be another reason why people in cars behave the way they do around a motorbike.

Working together makes us stronger

ll of us want to have good neighbours, but how many of us work hard at being a good neighbour?

You may be switching off around about now, because you have the proverbial neighbours from hell. Or so it seems, and nothing can be done about it!

If that’s true, then you have my sympathy, but read on because there is help available.

No-one should have to endure excessively loud music, vicious dogs, rowdy vehicles, overgrown vegetation invading your property from over the fence or any other unsociable activity that impinges on your quiet enjoyment of where you live.

Neighbourhood Support is an excellent organisation which has great ideals and has provided much help in keeping neighbourhoods safe, secure and enjoyable.

But all of it is dependent upon strong participation and good communication from those in the street groups.

CHRISTIAN COMMENT

First step to an improved living experience in our location is to actually get to know the people living closest to us. Can we name them? Do we have their phone numbers for emergencies and take the time to make ourselves known to them? These are all good steps, but there is more we can do.

The recent spate of youth crime and the emergence of some gang-related activity, makes for a less safe community environment. Especially if we turn a blind eye to it and pretend it’s not happening. This only allows the fear and intimidation to grow.

It was encouraging to hear recently of a proactive fight-back in a large American city.

Drug dealers and criminals had taken over whole city blocks

and were able to do whatever they liked.

This occurred due to the level of intimidation and violence, forcing good families out of the areas for their own safety. However, encouraged by churches and other agencies, some of these communities set up large family-friendly street parties.

Closing off the streets to traffic, they set up a giant food and fun festival out on the streets and pavements.

Music, dancing and plenty of food and entertainment attracted people in their hundreds to reclaim their streets.

At the same time they served notice to the drug houses and criminals that they should leave town. This was all done with media present to record the places being used for crime and drug dealing.

It was a great success, because of the unity of the people wanting to re-claim their inner city streets and clean up the neighbourhood. Police and local au-

thorities backed their efforts, but it took a rising up from the locals to stand their ground together.

It’s a bit hard on your own, but a combined approach lets bad neighbours know you are not a pushover and that un-neighbourly behaviour is unacceptable on this street.

Axe rampage at station A man was arrested after injuring seven people with an axe at the main train station in Duesseldorf, Germany in what appeared to be a random attack, police said yesterday.

Officers were alerted about an attack shortly before 9pm, prompting a large-scale police response.

“A person, probably armed with an axe, attacked people at random,” police said in a statement. Seven people were injured, three of them seriously, they said.

The suspected attacker was arrested after jumping off an overpass near the train station, the statement said.

The 36-year-old man, described as being from “the former Yugoslavia” and living in the nearby city of Wuppertal, suffered serious injuries and was being treated in a hospital.

“The suspect appears to have had psychological problems,” police said.

An axe was recovered and officers were searching the area in and around the station, which was closed for the investigation.

Police withdrew an earlier report that a second person

Knighting injury story ‘a lie’ Ed Sheeran and Princess Beatrice made headlines around the world last year when the singer claimed his face was slashed during a mock-knighting by the princess. But James Blunt, who was present at the party, has revealed the whole story was a lie. “Ed was drunk, messing around, and he cut himself. We made a fancy story up; people fell for it.

It was very embarrassing,” he said. Blunt joked that a “desperate” Sheeran made up the story to try and sell records and said he was surprised that people fell for it. Blunt revealed Sheeran cut himself but didn’t explain the circumstances behind the injury.

WikiLeaks to release CIA bug software code

Lorde has released a new song and announced that her second album Melodrama will arrive on June 16.

Liability, a heartfelt piano ballad, is the second taster of the upcoming album following the release of Green Light last week. Posting the song to her Twitter, Lorde told fans “I wanted you to have a new song from Melodrama, a new chapter of the story - this is Liability.”

Liability’s slower tempo and simple production contrasts with the energetic Green Light, confirming Lorde’s promise that “the album is very diverse”. Last week, she said that Green Light was “kind of a curve ball”.

WikiLeaks will release to tech firms the software code of CIA hacking tools that were designed to compromise smartphones and other products, the group’s founder said yesterday, attempting to position himself as a defender of cybersecurity and probably further antagonising the intelligence community.

“We have decided to work with” the firms, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said at a news conference, “to give them some exclusive access to the additional technical details we have so that fixes can be developed and pushed out, so that people can be secured.”

Once the patches are sent out – or, as Assange put it, “once this material is effectively disarmed by us” – WikiLeaks will release more

details publicly, he said.

Assange’s remarks come two days after the radical transparency site put up a cache of files describing secret CIA hacking techniques and tools aimed at, for instance, seizing control of iP-

hones and Google’s Android phones, turning some Samsung television sets into bugging devices and getting data from devices not connected to the Internet.

The release stopped short of releasing the code itself.

The CIA continues to have no comment on the authenticity of the documents released, which WikiLeaks said is the first tranche of more to come. Independent experts have said the files appear to describe authentic “exploits,” or tools that hackers can use to penetrate a device, but many of them are dated and appear to have already been patched by tech firms.

And researchers said they have been long aware of a number of the techniques.

A CIA spokesman, Jonathan Liu, suggested that WikiLeaks’ pronouncements of the scale and impact of its “Vault 7” release are exaggerated.

“As we’ve said previously, Julian Assange is not exactly a bastion of truth and integrity,” Liu said.

the problem and, in fact, we have brought a prior lawsuit against a common manufacturer based on the Magic Bullet’s similar design defect [Magic Bullet is a different blender, also owned by Homeland Housewares],” Andrus said.

US to back Raqqa assault A Kurdish-led force fighting the Islamic State group with the support of US troops will close in on the extremists’ de facto capital Raqqa within a few weeks, but the battle for the city will be difficult, a US military official said Thursday.

Air Force Col. John Dorrian said the US force consisting of a couple of hundred Marines that arrived in the region south of the Syrian-Turkish border will not have any frontline roles but will provide artillery fire to support the advance of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.

“The intent of their presence is to provide all-weather fire support, artillery fire to support their advance as they continue the isolation of Raqqa,” he said.

“This is just some added fire power that will be very difficult for the enemy to deal with.”

have a partner government to work with in Syria as is the case in Iraq.

The US already had some 500 advisers working with the Syrian Democratic Forces in addition to a force of 400 that arrived more recently, Dorrian said. He

said the troops include US Army Rangers already in Syria.

The SDF, a coalition of Kurdish, Arab and Christian fighters, has been the most effective force fighting Isis in Syria. The SDF has been on the offensive in the Raqqa area since November under the cover of airstrikes by the US-led coalition with the aim of eventually besieging the city before storming it.

Dorian said the SDF “made excellent progress and the enemy hasn’t been able to stop them from doing the things that they set out to do”.

He added that SDF fighters have so far captured about 6400 square kilometres of terrain from Isis.

“That’s excellent progress,” Dorrian said, adding that SDF fighters have also cut many supply lines used by Isis to try to either escape from the city “or to have fighters leave the area and conduct terrorist operations elsewhere away from Iraq and Syria.”

Legal challenges to travel ban mount ‘Knees Legal challenges against President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban mounted yesterday as Washington state said it would renew its request to block the executive order and a judge granted Oregon’s request to join the case.

The events happened a day after Hawaii launched its own lawsuit, and Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson said New York state also asked to join his state’s legal effort. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey said the state is joining fellow states in challenging the revised travel ban.

Washington was the first state to sue over the original ban, which resulted in Judge James Robart in Seattle halting its implementation around the country. Ferguson said the state would ask Robart to rule that his temporary restraining order against the first ban applies to Trump’s revised action.

“My message to President Trump is – not so fast,” Ferguson told reporters. “After spending more than a month to fix a broken order that he rushed out the door, the President’s new order reinstates several of the same

UN vows to put sex abuse victims first Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced new measures yesterday to tackle the increase in sexual abuse and exploitation by UN peacekeepers and staff, calling for a new focus on victims and bans on alcohol and fraternisation for troops.

The report also calls on the General Assembly to back the

UN chief’s call for financial penalties for the failure to investigate allegations and conclude the probe “in a timely manner”.

“I fully recognise that no magic wand exists to end the problem of sexual exploitation and abuse,” Guterres said.

In the 82-page report, he proposed a four-part strategy: put-

ting “the rights and dignity for victims at the forefront of UN efforts”; working “relentlessly” to end impunity for those guilty of sexual abuse and exploitation; building a network to support UN efforts; and raising worldwide awareness of the problem to address the stigma victims face.

A Canadian judge who asked a sexual assault complainant why she could not “keep your knees together” is resigning.

Alberta Federal Court Justice Robin Camp’s decision came after a scathing Canadian Judicial Council review called for his removal.

The review concluded he acted in a manner that seriously undermined public confidence in the judiciary.

The federal justice minister has accepted his resignation.

Mr Camp’s comments made during a 2014 rape trial sparked outrage and drew sharp criticism from sexual assault victims and their advocates.

The judge had tried to hold on to his position and told the council he had undergone education and had apologised for his comments.

The council, which oversees the judiciary, found that Mr Camp’s actions during the trial were “so manifestly and profoundly destructive of the concept of impartiality, integrity and independence of the judicial role that public confidence is sufficiently undermined to render the Judge incapable of executing the judicial office”.

In brief ‘Spare me the lecture’ A US man who scalped his girlfriend and ordered his pit bull to attack her has told a judge to skip the lecture. Zachary Gross, 31, was sentenced to 21 years in prison for the horrific September 2015 assault of his then-girlfriend, Marilyn Stanley.

“For her injuries – I feel horrible for what happened,” Gross told Judge Rick Brueggemann. “I don’t feel responsible. I maintain my innocence. It is what it is. I’m not asking for your mercy. Just give me the 20. I don’t need a lecture.”

The session will include a verdict that will either remove her from office over a corruption scandal or allow her to complete her term. Bus crash kills 26 At least 26 people died and 36 more were injured when an overcrowded bus veered off a mountain road in Nepal, officials said yesterday. Government administrator Krishna Chandra Poudel said the bus plunged off the road near a village about 400 kilometres west of the capital, Kathmandu. The bus rolled about 200 metres down a slope before crashing into the Pasagad river.

Local villagers helped police and soldiers pull the bodies and the injured from the wreckage.
