Ashburton ratepayers own 12 expensive lemons – the pay and display machines cemented into place along East Street. After months of debate the long-awaited, modern-day parking machines were installed in October 2013. They came with a hefty $115,000 price tag (plus installation costs) and were expected to net the council a significant amount in parking money. Parking prices jumped from 60 cents to $1 an hour and fines rose to a hefty $40. Machines installed, the Ashburton Dis-
