You’re more than welcome to come into our town, but the only request is that you show it, and us, some common courtesy. That’s the strongly-worded message from Ashburton Mayor, Donna Favel after the district was shunted into the national spotlight on the weekend after a tour
bus allowed passengers to relieve themselves on the side of State Highway One in Tinwald, just kilometres from public restrooms. The bus, own by prominent busing company Pacific Tourways, pulled over across the road from the Tinwald Medical Centre on Friday evening and a number of patrons on the bus, men and women, were observed to hop off
and relieve themselves on the side of the road, or behind the bushes that split the road and the nearby railway line. Inspections later revealed that they had also left their discarded toilet paper at the scene. A local resident, who watched members of the touring group exit the bus and begin to relieve themselves on the side of the road
took to social media to air her disgust at the entire situation and it quickly snowballed from there, with Mayor Favel and local MPs, Andrew Falloon and Jo Luxton weighing in on the matter. The social media post had, as of yesterday, been shared more than 1000 times. Mayor Favel had made a couple of attempts to contact the
bus company at the centre of the incident but on Saturday only managed to reach an operational section of the business. She confirmed to the Guardian that she would be reaching out to them again this morning.

Many of the Ashburton District’s memorial and rural halls are struggling to find enough money to pay for maintenance and ongoing running costs, a district council senior manager says. As work begins on next year’s budget, finance and business services manager Paul Brake said the district’s halls were becoming a challenge for the council and their communities. Memorial hall costs are largely covered by the council, but community halls stand alone. They can apply to be part of the council’s insurance scheme, but otherwise their only finding sources are rental, community fundraising or applying for a council community grant. “The memorial halls are a challenge for us because these boards can’t put money aside to do maintenance and then the council has to decide if it wants to fund the work,” Brake said. The council has tagged $125,000 in next year’s budget to re-roof the Tinwald Memorial Hall and money for earthquake repair work on the Rakaia Memorial Hall. Other memorial halls are located at Methven, Lagmhor/Westerfield and Mayfield. Methven is the biggest dollar earner with a projected income of $101,273 next year while Mayfield and Tinwald both budgeted to have an income of more than $9000 and Rakaia just over $8000. Lagmhor/ Westerfield has the smallest income, just $1500. When it comes to maintenance, community halls are largely on their own. The council could offer to take over those halls, but unravelling ownership issues of buildings and land would be complex. While there were some strategic community halls that were financially sound, the council wouldn’t be in the market for taking over the smaller ones that were struggling, councillor Stuart Wilson said. However, for some smaller

halls unless the council chipped in for maintenance, the work simply would not be done. Across the district there are 13 community halls. Some such as Mt Somers, Ruapuna and Hinds have a healthy income stream as do Alford Forest and Ashburton Forks. Several halls also have land that generates extra income. However, five halls – Chertsey, Dorie, Highbank, Lynnford, Pendarves and Seafield have an income of less than $1500. Infrequently used halls such as
Seafield and Chertsey were barely viable, councillor Mark Malcolm said. Those halls would be expensive to dispose of if the council went down that path and closing the halls was unlikely to go down well with the community, but their future would have to be addressed at some time, he said. Council chief executive Hamish Riach said the rural hall issue was complex because they could not all be treated in the same way as they each had differ-
ent resources and were managed in different ways. “We have to work through this carefully and make sure those that are running well with community support stay and are not regarded in the same light as others. It’s not one size fits all.” The rural hall issue needed to involve conversations with their community rather than the council telling them what they should do with a community facility run with money from those communities, he said.
Comfort stop irks residents From P1 “It’s really disappointing,” Favel said. “There’s a café just across the road and no shortage of places they could have stopped where there are the correct facilities, I’ll be seeking a bit of an explanation. “We are a district who are very proud of what we have to offer, and we welcome anybody in, but all we ask in return is that they be courteous and unfortunately in this instance, that hasn’t happened.” MPs Andrew Falloon and Jo Luxton are both hot on the case of Pacific Tourways too, with Falloon yet to receive a response to a letter he penned to the company on Friday night – like Favel, he said he would be following it up with them again this morning. Falloon described the act as “disgusting”. “I asked for them to confirm that this is not their usual practice and what they intended to do to ensure this sort of disgusting event doesn’t happen again,” he said. While not responding to multiple attempts to contact by some corners, Pacific Tourways general manager, Doug Kirk was reached by NZME and said he was contacted about the incident immediately by the driver of the bus. “There was a tour group on the bus and they let the passengers off, not the driver. They are the ones responsible. If the driver is told to stop by the tour group they stop, the driver is not in control of what the passengers do,” Kirk said. “There is an investigation happening and we have laid a complaint with police against the passengers. “We don’t condone this kind of behaviour.” While stating a complaint had been laid with police, no-one from the police communications team was able to confirm such a complaint had been laid as of yesterday afternoon following enquiries by the Guardian.

Organisers of the 94th annual Mayfield A&P Show are hailing the event as a huge success, basically because there is no other way to describe it. A stunning day in terms of both weather and crowd numbers resulted in the show being one for the record books and as he sat back yesterday afternoon to reflect on the previous 72 hours, president Dave Whillans could only but smile. “It really was a huge, but fantastic day,” he said. “We are over the moon with how things went, and it just goes to show that if you can put on a great day with good weather and plenty of things happening that the people will still come in their numbers.” The 2019 edition of the show was a very special occasion with it being 100 years since the show was first held. The show wasn’t held in both 1925 and 1948 because of polio outbreaks while it was also not held during World War Two. One of the highlights of the day, as it is most years, was the popular pig racing, which saw big crowds flock to watch the action while the tractor pull and the tug-of-war against the Clydesdales were also popular events. “We had really good feedback about the stuff we’d decided to hold, they seemed to really enjoy it which makes it easy for planning for next year,” Whillans said. Dayboo Stud’s Clydesdales were some of the stars of the day, winning a host of ribbons in the show classes but also entertaining the crowds. Eleven-year-old Anja and sixyear-old Sam combined their muscly frames for a tug-of-war competition that drew a big crowd. They were put to the test against a line-up of children first; 10 adults who also tested their strength later did not fare any better. Stud owner John Booth said the horses weighed about 685kg each and were bred to pull heavy loads
and work. “If they were working every day you can imagine how strong they get.” Anja and Sam also had the privilege of pulling the celebrity wagon in the grand parade, giving Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel, Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon, show president Whillans and other special guests a turn in the horse ring. Booth said the Clydesdales were always crowd-pullers and stood quietly while they were patted by fans, young and old. Anja and Sam will be in action later this year when they pull a plough in the national ploughing finals at Chertsey on May 11. The pig racing was as popular as always, though the Hokonui-sponsored racer Hogonui caused a mini-sensation by refusing to wear the racing colours supplied. Whillans said one of the pleasing aspects of his wanders around the entire ground were the number of vendors telling him that they’d sold out of stock, such was the size of the crowd. “That’s usually a really good sign that things have gone well, I know a lot of the food stalls sold out of product as did a number of others stalls, so that’s great stuff for us to hear.” The A&P Show circuit moves up the road to Methven this Saturday.

Thai judges observe local scene
Jones unfit, says Act Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones is unfit to be a minister after being involved in the granting of up to $4.6m to a Northland tourism project that he had a conflict of interest in, Act leader David Seymour says. Thirty-two judges from Thailand were recently in Ashburton to listen to a talk on restorative justice presented by local co-ordinator Toni Sowman. The presentation, which took place on Thursday, saw Sowman talk the judges through her role as Mid Canterbury’s restorative justice co-ordinator, what restorative justice was about, the benefits of the system, her background as a police officer and its importance in cases such as those as family violence and cases that had a positive outcome. “I was honoured to have the opportunity to speak to them,” she said. “Thai people are lovely and I have a connection to Thailand having travelled there with the police after the tsunami and travelling there for my honeymoon.” The head of the delegation was chief justice Thep Ingkasit, who is the chief justice of region one in Thailand. Sowman also hosted a question and answer session as part of the talk, allowing the judges to quiz her on the restorative justice
Fans ruin concert Two Red Hot Chili Peppers fans say the band’s Auckland concert was ruined by a group of drunk men who vomited on them, hurled abuse, and nearly strangled one of them. John and Michelle Rea, from the North Shore, paid $200 a ticket to attend the gig at Spark Arena, but said they could barely recall anything about the actual concert. The couple instead spent the entire evening trying to ignore a drunken group behind them.

process in Ashburton. “They asked why would offenders want to undertake restorative justice if it would not give them a reduction in their sentence,” she said.

Ashburton Youth Councillors introduce themselves This year’s Ashburton Youth Council is already in full swing and over the course of this week the Guardian intends to introduce its members to you. Jaime Pitt-MacKay caught up with them and asked each a few questions. Lusungu Mbambo Q: What made you want to join the youth council and get a taste of local government? I was part of the Ashburton College Year 9 council and I thought it would be a good step up to join the youth council. And I thought it would be a good experience Q: Describe yourself in 100 words, any previous council/organisational experiences? I’m Lusungu and I like athletics and all other sports. I also enjoy being with friends and family. Q: Do you have any goals for your time on the council or any big issues you want to try and tackle? I just want to bring the youth of Ashburton closer.
Paige Collins Q: What made you want to join the youth council and get a taste of local government? I wanted to join the youth council to get more involved with our community and make a difference by getting people involved in the activities we do. Q: Describe yourself in 100 words, any previous council/organisational experiences? Describe myself in 100 words?! I can barely describe myself in 10 words! I was in the youth council last year, so I’ve had some previous experience. Q: Do you have any goals for your time on the council or any big issues you want to try and tackle? My goal is definitely to do a campaign for bullying and mental health week, and to reach out to those who have suffered many different experiences that are involved in the year. As for tackling big issues, I’d love to prevent broken glass being on the streets, it is so dangerous when you are walking with children and pets. Q: Do you have any long term goals of entering politics, local government or national? Long term goals would be to prevent bullying and help students with mental health, it is crazy how many people have mental health issues from bullying and traumatic

Wilson Hii Q: What made you want to join the youth council and get a taste of local government? I always wanted to give something back to the community. So one Saturday morning, I was walking in town and stubble on the Ashburton Youth Crew selling sausages to fundraise for the year and also recruiting new member for AYC. Great! I have found what I always wanted to for the community. So they gave me an application form to take home and fill it in. I always wanted to help with the community with our local events. So I ask around and see who was volunteering to do it. Not only that, you get a taste of the District Council and you can put a proposal into the council of your ideas that might help the communi-

ty to be a better place. Q: Describe yourself in 100 words, any previous council/organisational experiences? I haven’t been involved with much council or organisation myself, but I have always wanted to become a leader. So at school, I try to get involved in as much as I can to become a better leader. I am always keen to learn anything new to make it better. I like to keep things tidy and neat so when you are trying to find something, it will be very easily accessible. I have always wanted to be a good role model for people to copy. I want people to do the right things, but some people just don’t listen. Q: Do you have any goals for your time on the council or any big issues you want to try and tackle? Try and host more events throughout

the year for people to go to and enjoy. It is because Ashburton is a pretty boring town and we don’t make use of our facilities enough. So it is always great to have some events throughout the year. Our goal for this year is try and get more people to join the Ashburton Youth Council. Our biggest problem we have so far is that we have not got enough youth in our Youth Council. My goals for the rest of the time is that for the community to know each other better. Q: Do you have any long-term goals of entering politics, local government or national? I really want to get into the Parliament to get a taste of what it is like in the Parliament. I would like to go to Wellington someday to become a Youth MP. I have always been interested in politics. It will be great to go into the Parliament and get trained to become Youth MP.

Based on the true stories of four generations of women, Mockingbird is a tongue-in-cheek portrayal of postnatal distress. The play follows counsellor Tina, played by the writer Lisa Brickell, who is afraid of commitment and terrified of having children due to her family history of postnatal depression. Brickell masterfully switches between four generations of characters and their hilarious inner critic. It is rich with personal anecdotes from Brickell’s own family and informed by the work of Dr Diana Jefferies and her team at Western Sydney University, who studied his-

torical accounts of women admitted to Sydney’s Callan Park and Gladesville Hospitals from 1885 to 1955. Postnatal distress affects approximately one in seven women in New Zealand and many men every year. Mental health organisation Changing Minds New Zealand was also consulted. Changing Minds CEO Taimi Allan said that sharing the real-life lived experience was integral to breaking down the stigma, barriers and discrimination associated with mental health issues. “Helping people to share those experienc-

Metallica to play in New Zealand Heavy metal legends Metallica have announced that they will be bringing their WorldWired tour to New Zealand. They will play at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland on October 31 with support from Slipknot. Metal fans have been long hoping that the band would make their way to New Zealand as part of the massive worldwide tour that kicked off in Puerto Rico in 2016 in support of their latest album Hardwired... to Self-Destruct. They have since travelled
through Europe and North America. Last year drummer Lars Ulrich all but confirmed the band were on their way, telling a Metallica fan club website that the band had “got to go” to New Zealand, but stopped short of announcing any dates or potential timeframe for any shows. “We’ve got to just sit and look. There’s Japan, there’s Australia, there’s New Zealand. There’s a couple other pockets that obviously Metallica has a long and
very cool relationship with,” he said. “So, we just got to sit down and figure it out.” That was enough to spur 12-year-old William Bush into action. The Havelock North super fan set up an online petition to encourage the band to play here. His efforts attracted almost 7000 signatures. Bush said the announcement made it all worth it. “Hawke’s Bay was always a bit ambitious. I started the petition just to get them to New Zealand
and it paid off.” Mother, Anna Bush said their household was full of excitement. “Hardwork has paid off for a little boy who has written a lot of letters.” Her husband and 15-year-old son, Ben were also fans of the band. The band’s last visit here was way back in 2010, so a return is long overdue. Just as long as the famously volatile band doesn’t self-destruct before they get here. - NZME

Comfort stop raises our hackles W
hen you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go – but even then, there are some limits. Those limits though, they clearly didn’t apply to the group of people travelling through Ashburton on Friday night and chose one of the busiest points of the district to stop and relieve themselves in full view of the public. In a purely bizarre set of circumstances, our district came under the attention of the national news world over the weekend as the story broke of the unruly visitors who couldn’t hold on the extra couple of minutes to get to one of the multitude of rests rooms available just a little further up the road.
Some people were livid – using terms like; disgusting, filthy and outrageous, while others seemed to spot the funny side of the situation and merely laughed it off as nothing major. It could be suggested that you are only human if you’ve been in that unenviable position of needing the toilet so badly that you’re prepared to go wherever and whenever but by and large the good majority of people in
society, you’d imagine, would have the common decency to look for somewhere a little more private and unpopulated where they could do the business. Let’s get it clear, here and now, what unfolded on Friday night on the main road was not okay. Sometimes, you just have to go. Ducking down a quiet side road out in the countryside, away from public view is pretty commonplace, especially with kids – because there isn’t much chance of holding on there. Those involved on Friday night made a few bad decisions, starting with the first decision to stop on the side of State Highway One to go to the toilet. Had they pulled over, somewhere out of town away from
a huge number of public eyes, there very well may not have been this story. The second bad decision was to drive past venues like the Tinwald Tavern and the Tinwald Domain, all of which have toilet facilities. Third on the list of bad decisions was the idea of leaving further proof of defecation at the scene of the crime. If you’re going to go to that level of dirtiness, at least take your rubbish away with you and don’t just leave it laying on the ground. What this group has done is put future visitors to this town on notice. Any bus that pulls over now in a location that is not the normal is going to be scrutinised closer than ever before, cameras at the
ready waiting for a mistake or a decision that can be pounced on. Like our Mayor Donna Favel and both Andrew Falloon and Jo Luxton, the hope is that there will be some form of retribution for those involved. The bus company says that there is now an investigation into what happened and that a complaint has been laid with police against the passengers. It will be interesting to see how that develops – perhaps a case for restorative justice? We need to teach people that it’s not okay to come into our district and treat it with disrespect. And we’d hope that there are people from within our region that wouldn’t go into another and do the same.

Leave nothing but footprints I
t takes a fair amount to shock me. Staying on a mate’s farm on Mitcham Road when I was about six, I ran headfirst into an electric fence. Not my finest moment, but in my defence it was quite dark. My reaction was remarkably similar on Friday evening when I opened an email from a constituent. The photos, which by now you’ll have seen, are revolting. Visitors to our district openly relieving themselves on the side of the road, just across from a medical centre, a café, and numerous homes. Incredibly it all happened a couple of minutes’ drive from numerous public toilets, including the ones on East Street and the Ashburton Domain. There was no reason for the bus to make a toilet stop there, on State Highway One, in full view of passing traffic and living room windows. I’m not some evangelical prude. Growing up as a keen hiker there were times when you

were a long way from the nearest convenience. But that old motto always applied, leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photos. That wasn’t the case here. Toilet paper and other waste was left behind. After being notified on Friday evening I got in touch with the bus company. They’re yet to answer my questions about how they’ll ensure this doesn’t happen again, but I understand that an independent tour operator had hired the bus. It’s important they take what happened on Friday seriously. This shouldn’t happen in Tinwald, or in any part of our district or country. The fact that it does was ap-
parent to us when Parliament sat last week. On the agenda, a draft piece of legislation to increase the maximum fine for incidents like this, and other littering, from $400 to $1000. The sponsor of the legislation, the MP for Coromandel, highlighted examples in his own community of what happened in Tinwald. At the Select Committee prior to the vote, all councils who submitted on the legislation were in favour of it, except Auckland. The Ashburton District Council strongly supported the legislation, noting that the current maximum fine is far too low. I agree. If we are to ensure a proper disincentive to the sort of behaviour we saw on Friday, the maximum fines should be increased substantially. There are other avenues that can be explored in this case. I understand that the bus company have made a complaint to Police. I also accept the infringement process open to councils has flaws around the level of evidence required (the concern
expressed by Auckland Council). They could have easily been worked through by amending the legislation as it progressed through Parliament. Unfortunately we won’t have that opportunity. Despite the near-unanimous disgust in our community at what happened in Tinwald on Friday, and has happened in other parts of New Zealand, the Labour Party voted against the legislation, which means it won’t progress any further. That’s a shame. Without tough disincentives and stronger tools from Parliament, I’m worried these shocking one-off occurrences will only become more regular.

Most overrated tourist traps T
hey’re the attractions we’re told to see before we die but they turned into a massive disappointment. A new ranking of 99 of the world’s most iconic tourist attractions has determined which are worth seeing and which are a complete waste of time. The people at the website stasher.com have gone through online reviews and considered factors like ease of access, safety and security, and social media engagement to rank the world’s 99 most overrated attractions, reports news.com.au. Outrageously, an Australian icon makes the list, although thankfully it’s the only one: Sydney’s own Opera House. It was ranked at 29 with an overall score of 6.91 out of a possible 10. The lower the number, the more overrated the attraction. One of the sources stasher. com used to create its list was TripAdvisor, where a reviewer said the official tour of Sydney’s most famous building was “terrible”. “It’s not worth it,” the reviewer said. “They will show you several short movies about the Opera House, better watch a documentary on BBC — it will have much more details. “You are not allowed to take any (photos) inside also they will rush you through and advertise their shows.” Indoor photography on tours is banned for copyright reasons. At least the Opera House didn’t fare as poorly as the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which claimed the unflattering title of most overrated tourist destination in the world with an overall score of 3.73. On TripAdvisor a reviewer said it “should be at the bottom of your ‘things to do’ list in LA”. “Honestly, it’s not that great,” they said. “It is just a strip or a sidewalk, none of the glitz and glamour that you hear about Hollywood. “Plus, the place is over crowded with tourists, scammers, homeless, creeps and weirdos. The biggest let down is that we

Not a single cop or security was in sight.” In second place was Peru’s Machu Picchu, followed by Hong Kong’s Ocean Park theme park, Hong Kong Disneyland and Everland theme park in Yongin, South Korea. The Great Wall of China, Lotte World in Seoul, the Gold Museum in Bogota, Colombia, Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar and the Great Pyramids of Giza rounded out the top-10 most overrated sites. Few of the world’s most iconic spots were spared from the list: India’s Taj Mahal was ranked in 88th spot, faring worse than Stonehenge (81), Niagara Falls (57), the Eiffel Tower (56), Japan’s Mount Fuji (51), the National 9/11 Museum and Memorial (ouch – 37), Christ the Redeemer

The worst-ranked attractions for safety and security were the Gold Museum in Bogota – with a score of zero out of 10 – followed by the Great Pyramids of Giza, and the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, both in Bangkok. The most difficult place to access was deemed to be Machu Picchu. Conversely, the easiest place to access was the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. Massively overpriced to visit a bunch of stones in a field … it has been completely ruined by horrible commercialisation, not to mention the pollution caused by miles of traffic tailbacks. Avoid at all costs!” Plaza de Espana in Seville, Spain: “Not for young children. The boat round the moat for 6 euros? You be better buying something else for 6 euros. Cronulla captain Paul Gallen has rebuked Cameron Smith’s calls for Melbourne’s stripped NRL premierships to be reinstated, arguing the Sharks’ salary cap breaches pale in comparison to the Storm’s. Smith caused headlines last week when he claimed that Melbourne’s 2007 and 2009 title should be handed back to them, accusing the NRL of double standards over their treatment of the Sharks breaches. An NRL investigation earlier this month found that the Sharks had breached the cap by more than $700,000 between 2013 and 2017. Tinwald had an easy time ensuring they remained at the top of the Mid Canterbury Tennis A grade leaderboard on Saturday, when Southern were forced to default to them. It was the second week in a row that the Mid Canterbury Tennis competition has been hit by a player shortage, with sickness and people being away thought to be the reason for the struggle in the latest round. So only two of the three scheduled matches ended up taking to the court at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on Saturday afternoon, and while the numbers were lacking, the drama wasn’t, with both matches going down to the wire. Fairton were joint second on the table with Methven heading into the penultimate round of the season, and they took on
a Hampstead side which had been struggling for numbers after the departure from the district of both Aidan Mitchell and Erin Connelly-Whyte in recent weeks. But the team led by Connor Brosnahan found three ring-ins on Saturday and they did the job for Hampstead, getting them home on a countback of sets 8-7, after the clash ended tied 3-all on matches. Fairton dominated the top half, with Brosnahan and Peter Leonard combining to make Hampstead’s top pairing but going down to Fairton’s Rhys Cromie and Tyler Leonard in the top doubles in three sets, 6-1 2-6 1-0 (10-3). Fairton’s other two wins came in the top two singles, with Cromie beating Brosnahan 6-1 6-3 and Tyler Leonard beating Gareth Evans 6-4 4-6 1-0 (10-6). Hampstead dominated in the
bottom order though, with Gareth Evans and Mathieu Lucas beating Tim Groves and John Leslie in the bottom doubles 6-1 6-1. Lucas then beat Groves in three sets, 6-4 4-6 1-0 (10-8) at three, while Ollie Bubb backed up from A reserve duty to play singles at four for Hampstead and beat Leslie 6-0 6-1. Meanwhile, Methven picked up an even narrower win over Allenton, also needing a countback to get home after the encounter finished 3-all on matches. But with the two sides also drawn on sets, it came down to a countback on games, which Methven took out 59-52. The two sides shared the doubles spoils, with Methven’s Eddie Dargue and Pete Kirwan beating Sam Bubb and Jacob Pye in the top doubles 7-6 (7-4) 6-0, and Allenton’s Bryn Looij and Matt Bubb winning the
bottom doubles 6-2 6-3 over Michael Kempthorne and Josh Jones. Allenton’s other wins came in the top singles, where Sam Bubb beat Dargue 6-4 6-1, and at three where Matt Bubb beat Jones 7-5 7-6 (9-7). Methven picked up wins in the two singles, with Kirwan beating Looij 6-2 7-5, and at four where Kempthorne beat Pye 6-1 6-0. The A reserve grade also featured a default for the second week running on Saturday, with the Allenton Kakapos forced to default to the Allenton Wekas, while Southern/Wakanui were too good for Hampstead in the one game that did go ahead, winning 6-0. A grade and A reserve interclub tennis will take a break next weekend, with the Mid Canterbury Championship Gala Cup competition set to be contested over both Saturday and Sunday.

Aussies mull opening combos for World Cup David Warner has given a timely reminder of his talent with a grade-cricket ton but the race to open the batting for Australia at both the World Cup and Ashes is now wide open. Warner, whose year-long ban for his role in the Cape Town cheating scandal expires later
this month, returned from elbow surgery on Saturday and scored 110 off 77 balls for Randwick-Petersham. The Indian Premier League, which starts on March 23 and features some of the best bowlers in the world, will provide a better gauge of where Warner is at.

Day of glory for Thurlow The residents of small rural township Waverley look set to rock and roll for the next few days as resident trainer Bill Thurlow and his gallant mare Glory Days did them proud when bolting home in the Gr.1 Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup (3200m) at Ellerslie on Saturday. The Red Giant six-year-old had provided Thurlow and her owners with their biggest win when successful in the Gr.2 Avondale Cup (2400m) at her last start but surpassed that thrill with another commanding performance in the iconic Ellerslie two-miler. Expertly handled by last season’s leading jockey Sam Collett, Glory Days was true to her normal racing pattern as she settled last early before looping the field at the 600m mark.

hen you’re laughing, most of the world outside the Waikato smiles with you. While beating the Chiefs, 5728, the Crusaders of 2019 already look as if they might be better than the Crusaders of 2017 and 2018. Great All Black captain Graham Mourie believed the secret to rugby was a state where your brain was as calm as if you were sitting in a chair, while your body was going at 100mph. There were many moments in Christchurch, especially in the superb offload from David Havili for Codie Taylor’s first try, when that state of athletic Zen was reached. Even a coach infinitely more repressed than Scott Robertson would have beamed and fist bumped. Be very afraid. In the stands watching the massacre of the Chiefs by the Crusaders were a couple of handy footy players in Kieran Read and Sam Whitelock. When they’re added to the squad that Crusader forward pack will have eight All Blacks to call on, as well as a huge bunch of hungry, tough players bursting for a chance. Not that long ago to say the Chiefs showed courage by scoring some consolation points late in a game would have been deeply patronising. Now it’s the best anyone can offer. In the next fortnight they have to play the Canes in Wellington, and then the resurgent Bulls in Pretoria. Only a sadist would enjoy the prospect. Finally unleashed by the Blues, Rieko Ioane showed why he is, bar none, the best left wing in world rugby. Four tries on the way to the Blues beating the Sunwolves, 2820, underscored the fact in big, bold, strokes. It’s a family affair. It was a big weekend for the Ioane family.
Calm down, Sonny The Blues, a win to their name at last this season, now have a bye – a relief to virtually everyone at the franchise apart from Sonny Bill Williams, a player who distinguished himself as captain against the Sunwolves and just wants to keep going. Williams, handed the leadership duties at North Harbour’s QBE Stadium in the absence of rested All Black lock Patrick Tuipulotu, was so determined to do the right thing by his team as they attempted to honour the memory of Mike Tamoeiata that he was told to calm down at times by referee Mike Fraser and even some of his teammates. - NZME

Okay, let’s just walk away quietly.” Years ago one of our best referees, Colin Hawke, told me how he thought near the end of a tight game. “Let’s not have a situation where I call a penalty that’s pretty nondescript, which can have a major influence on the match.” Queensland ref Damon Murphy, in the last minute of the Hurricanes-Highlanders game, made the desperately tight, but correct, decision to penalise Luke Whitelock for hands in a ruck. Beauden Barrett’s resulting penalty kick sealed the game for
the Canes, 25-22. The pity, without any blame falling on Murphy, was that it was an anticlimactic end to a game which was way better than the wind tunnel conditions suggested it would be. Hurricanes fullback Chase Tiatia backed up a sparkling debut last week, with another dynamic performance against the Highlanders. Tiatia is not only an elusive runner, but 22 minutes into the game he also made a tackle on powerful Highlanders lock, Josh Dickson, that was not only brave (Tiatia was spotting Dickson a lazy 16kg) but vital, as Dickson’s run had the potential to end with a five pointer for the Canes. It gets a bit confusing, but as good as Ash and Elliot Dixon, are, Josh Dickson was the star of the Highlanders forward pack in Wellington. Dickson was a basketball star at Otago Boys’ High School,
so his ball handling skills, and ability to run angles is hardly surprising. What’s just as impressive is the 24-year-old’s workrate. He was a towering Energiser bunny at the Caketin. The Welsh-Scotland game kicked off at Murrayfield at 3.15pm on Saturday UK time. On that afternoon a Kiwi documentary film crew wanted to film a Welsh club game in the valleys. Despite numerous phone calls, and searching of club websites, aided by former Welsh Lion John Taylor and Manurewa Welshman Phil Kingsley-Jones, it was impossible to find ONE club game being played. At Ebbw Vale, Brynmawr, Blaina, Treadgar and Abertillery they’d closed down so they could watch the test. As well as rugby clubs, will all Welsh shops be closed when they play Ireland? - NZME
The NSW Waratahs are hoping they won’t have to abandon the SCG after Australian sport’s most famous playing surface was ripped apart in a Super Rugby derby hijacked by curators. Waratahs fans had been expecting NSW’s star-studded, all-Wallabies backline to light up Saturday night’s showdown with the Queensland Reds. But instead of Israel Folau finishing off dazzling Waratahs attacking raids to become Super Rugby’s all-time leading tryscorer, punters suffered through a painstaking spectacle that left frantic groundsmen as busy as the players. Shovels and rakes in hand, the repair men were called on after every scrum to restore the shredded playing strip that couldn’t cope with the twotonne set pieces on a pitch usually reserved for cricket and AFL. - AAP
Pollard inspires Bulls The Bulls went to the top of Super Rugby’s South African conference as talismanic flyhalf Handre Pollard led his side to a comprehensive 37-14 victory over the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. The Springbok pivot was again key to the Bulls’ success with his clever passing setting up tries and his boot adding 22 points in a comprehensive victory in the last game of week four action. The Bulls have now beaten their three South African rivals the Stormers, Lions and Sharks – in the first month of the new season with their only blemish coming away in Buenos Aires against the Jaguars. - AAP

Warren Gatland admits he’s going to be on edge for his last Six Nations match as Wales side go for the Grand Slam next weekend. Wales held out a second-half onslaught from Scotland to win 18-11 yesterday at Murrayfield to remain undefeated through four rounds. The Welsh must beat defending champions Ireland – a team Gatland coached from 1998-2001 – in Cardiff next Saturday for the sweep. Gatland, coach of Wales for more than 11 years, is stepping down after the Rugby World Cup later this year. “There’s no doubt it’ll be emotional,” Gatland said. “It’s St Patrick’s Day next week so the Irish will be chomping at the bit. “It’ll be a great rugby occasion and you
won’t be able to get a ticket anywhere. “The competition is still open. England will think if we get knocked over, they’ll have a chance to win. “So will Ireland. “We want to win this championship and the only way we can is by getting the Grand Slam. “If we do that, I can promise you there will be some pretty huge celebrations afterwards.” He could become the first coach to win three Grand Slams. His previous slams were in 2008 and 2012. “I’m excited about it,” he said. “It’s a dream and we could do something special as a group of players. Wagner does it again Against long odds, the Black Caps have given themselves a chance of a test victory. After the first two days of the second test were washed out at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, a result seemed unlikely, and became even more implausible as the visitors waltzed to 119-1 after being sent in to bat on one of the greenest wickets ever seen in New Zealand. By the end of the day though, the Black Caps were in the box seat. After Bangladesh collapsed to 211 all out, the hosts were at 38-2 in response when rain fell at 4.59pm, and with a brighter forecast set for the next two days, there is still enough time for them to manufacture an unexpected victory. Despite losing their openers cheaply before stumps, the Black Caps should be happier with their efforts yesterday. As well as needing a further 18 wickets, Bangladesh will need to bat again to win – practically impossible with just two days left. On the other hand, if New Zealand bat well today, they can build a significant lead, and a chance for victory – something that did not seem possible after Trent Boult and Tim Southee had been easily negated by Bangladesh’s opening pair of Tamim Iqbal and Shadman Islam. Their 75-run stand defied what looked to be a bowling paradise. Logic dictated that all the Black Caps’ seam spearheads needed to do was to pitch the ball up and they’d cause problems, but Bangladesh had the rub of the green; rewarded for playing aggressively. Tamim reached 74 for the third consecutive innings, carving the seamers through and behind cover, and while Colin de Grandhomme got rid of Shadman, Bangladesh were set to get to lunch having lost just the solitary wicket. Then, Neil Wagner did what Neil Wagner does. Not introduced until the 31st over, and having split the webbing on his non-bowling hand while fielding, it seemed like it might not be Wagner’s day. But, with traditional methods having failed, his trusty short ball approach once again proved an inspired weapon. His first two wickets came in remarkable circumstances.

A dominant season was capped off when the Tech Stags added Mid Canterbury Cricket’s Muirhead Rosebowl title to their collection on Saturday. The Stags took control early in Saturday’s final against Lauriston, at Lauriston, and never really looked back, eventually taking it out by six wickets. That meant that they finished the season with a trophy cabinet full of silverware. They started the season by drawing the T20 competition final
with Lauriston, before winning the Pritchard Shield and retaining the Bevan Stroud Memorial Trophy, and as well as the Muirhead Rosebowl also took out the Studholme Shield for being the season’s top overall team. Although Lauriston had earnt the right to host the final courtesy of a victory over Tech in the final round of the Muirhead Rosebowl, which propelled them to the top of the table thanks to a superior run rate, the country side found
the going tough on Saturday. Lauriston lost both openers – Scott Maher and Scott Morgan – with only four runs on the board, and while that brought a potential big-hitter to the crease in the form of Alex Hooper, he didn’t hang around for long. Hooper was out for a golden duck on the first ball of the third over and his side was in serious trouble at 4/3. Nick Gilbert and Tom Ravenscroft then put on a 53-run stand
for the fourth wicket to steady the ship, with Gilbert top-scoring with 40 before Dan O’Brien added 30 at seven to help the side through to 125 all out off 43.4 overs. For Tech, Jeremy Punselie was the chief destroyer with the ball and he finished with 4/25 off his nine overs, while Harry Jones and Bevan Ravenscroft also took two each. Tech’s batsmen then got their side off to a top start in their runs chase, with opener William McK-
ee producing a knock of 31 before being trapped leg before off the bowling off Morgan. McKee was actually only one of two Tech players to make double figures, but the other was Des Kruger whose 61 not out off just 40 balls was a matchwinner, seeing his side across the line in 26.1 overs. Tech lost just four wickets on the way to the victory, with two of those wickets taken by Dan O’Brien, who finished with 2/16 off four overs.
