Glowing report for Ashburton facility Ploughers in actionP2

Ashburton and in particular the EA Networks Centre have received glowing reports from the indoor bowling fraternity following the opening two days of the National Championships.

Up to 1000 people have come to Ashburton for the week long tournament, which has seen the court area at the EA Networks Centre booked out with more than 70 bowling mats filling the stadium.

The tournament was officially opened on Saturday morning by Ashburton mayor, Donna Favel who thanked the bowls community for coming to the district and wished them all the best for the week.

New Zealand Indoor Bowls president, Nigel Warnes, said that the first two days of the tournament had been a great success with huge numbers taking to the floor to compete in the singles competition.

“There’s been some really good feedback,” Warnes said.

“The venue is an asset to this district and we’re really pleased to have been able to play here and we’re also looking forward to seeing what unfolds over the rest of the week.”

One of the most important aspects of any indoor bowls tournament is how well the floor plays.

Indoor bowls is played on mats, but the weight and green required is determined by the floor underneath them and all reports from players and officials on the floor at the EA Networks Centre has been extremely positive.

Play resumes again this morning with the qualifying day for the pairs championship with post-section play held tomorrow before the triples on Wednesday and Thursday and then the fours on Friday.

Top ploughers in action

I’m not superhuman, says Ardern

A high standard of ploughing and a good number of competitors were features of the Ashburton qualifying event, held yesterday, for next year’s New Zealand Ploughing Championships to be held in Chertsey in May. Organised by the Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club, yesterday’s competition attracted just under 30 competitors from around the country to a paddock on Christys Road that organising committee member John Hall said had not been ploughed for 28 years.

He said the freshness of the paddock meant competitors were provided with a real test of their skill, as faults stood out more compared with competing on paddocks that were ploughed regularly.

One of those at the event was World Ploughing Organisation chairman Colin Millar, who attended another competition in Hinds on Saturday and will be in Rakaia for the next two days for a New Zealand Ploughing Association executive meeting.

Millar, from Rotorua, said the quality of ploughing in New Zealand remained strong but typical of most country-based sports, the younger generation were not coming through in the numbers they had in the past, although most clubs were still attracting some young people.

He said the Mid Canterbury region was known for its ploughing knowledge, experience and comradeship, which would be valuable in organising next year’s national championships.

Competing in the vintage section yesterday was Darren Ross, from Leeston.

Ross, who grew up in the Ashburton area, was competing in his grandfather Hugh Ross’ old Farmall F-14, which dated back to the late 1930s.

The tractor had been sold about 50 years ago and only came back into the family’s hands after it was discovered in a Barrhill shed last year.

Days out from having her first child, New Zealand’s prime minister says she’s not superhuman and doesn’t want others to feel pressured to follow her lead.

Jacinda Ardern is due to give birth next week and has been working as regular, determined to not hand over the reins until she arrives at the hospital.

After that she’ll only take six weeks off and will still be on call for major decisions.

On Sunday, she said she was reluctant to be a role model for others.

“I do not want to create a false impression that all women should be superhuman or super women,” she said.

“I am able to do what I’m doing because I have enormous support around me and it makes me quite privileged.

“I wouldn’t want to be held up as some exemplar because it’s not easy and I’m lucky. “ The 37-year-old also opened up about what life is like for her and her family.

“We know that we are watched, and we do our best just to be true to ourselves. But we know that that will happen to us for parenting as well,” she said.

“As long as the judgement falls on me more than my child, that’s what I hope for the most.”

Meanwhile, Ms Ardern has also tried to put at ease worries about the how the country will run in her absence, praising deputy prime minister Winston Peters and saying she won’t be far away.

“The thing to keep in mind is I’m not dead, I have not exited from the country ... and so I’ll be staying in close touch,” she said.

“I can assure people, I will keep doing my job. But I also acknowledge I’m not superhuman.”

Ms Ardern’s partner, broadcaster Clarke Gayford, will be their baby’s primary carer after the prime minister returns to parliament.

Season kicks off in style

Public transport expensive

The 2018 winter season kicked off at Mt Hutt on Friday with all lifts running on opening day for the first time in more than 20 years.

General manager of operations James Urquhart said to top it off, a timely 35cm of new snow arrived between Tuesday and Thursday, which saw the field open top to bottom trails in great condition.

“With a great snow base and calm, sunny weather for Friday, we couldn’t have had a better start to the 2018 winter season, Urquhart said.

“Our triple chairlift usually opens at the end of June/early July due to insufficient early season snow coverage on the lower mountain but thanks to a massive upgrade to our snowmaking system over the summer, we have been able to make snow on “International” in the lead-up to opening day.

“We have effectively doubled our snowmaking capacity and can operate snow guns on the upper and lower sections of the mountain simultaneously – in the past we had to focus snowmaking on specific areas of the upper mountain due to pumping limitations.”

After last week’s timely snow fall, the snow base on groomed trails climbed to 35-75cm and Urquhart said whenever temperatures are low enough snowmaking will be operational to make sure the trails are kept in top condition.

Keeping with tradition, “First on the Summit” and “First on the Quad” tees were up for grabs for those keen enough to head up early and take pole position in the lift lines.

“Our “First on the Triple” tees – new for 2018 – were a much-coveted collector’s item and claimed by three familiar Mt Hutt locals; Andy Cameron-Daniels, Paul Womersley and Ben Yorston.”

Mt Hutt kciked off the 2018 ski season on Friday with all lifts running on opening day for the first time in more than 20 years.

Auckland has the third most expensive public transport in the world, according to a report by Deutsche Bank.

In Auckland you will need to shell out $174.74 for a monthly ticket to get around the city by bus, train and ferry, says the 2017 report. Only London at NZ$247 to travel on the tube for a month and Dublin at $187.11 are more expensive than Auckland in the study of nearly 50 cities.

Wellington is the 12th most expensive city at $143.89 for a monthly ticket.

Auckland Transport HOP monthly passes vary from $150 for ferry services to the North Shore to $325 for use on Gulf Harbour ferry services. A bus and train monthly pass is $215.

An AT spokesman said when calculating fares the council body has to find a balance between affordable and appealing public transport and providing value for money for ratepayers and taxpayers who subsidise fares.

In February, Transport Minister Phil Twyford floated the idea of cheaper train and bus fares to tackle gridlock in cities like Auckland and Wellington.

He said the Government could increase subsidies for public transport in exchange for councils getting people out of cars and into public transport, cycling and walking.

The idea came shortly after AT raised many public transport fares to try to stay within a 47 per cent to 50 per cent cost-recovery range.

Tennis pavilion earns praise at awards

Architect Phil Redmond has come a long way since he designed the Ashburton skatepark.

Redmond, these days of Christchurch-based architectural firm PRau, received a Small Project Architecture Award at the 2018 Canterbury Architecture Awards late last week for the Carters Estate Tennis Pavilion, which was described by the judges as “beautifully crafted and elegant”.

Redmond said the pavilion, constructed by Mid Canterbury firm Bradfords Building, was specifically designed as a community facility for the private subdivision located on the northern fringe of Ashburton.

Although situated next to the estate’s tennis court, it was also

somewhere where residents could meet up after work, or for a party, so it was really a multi-purpose facility, he said.

As well as work at Carters Estate, Redmond has designed other “bits and pieces for family members” in the Ashburton area and has another two or three buildings in the planning stage.

The 2018 Canterbury Architecture Awards are part of the peerreviewed New Zealand Architecture Awards programme run by the New Zealand Institute of Architects.

In total, 34 awards were announced at Christchurch’s Cardboard Cathedral, with the winning projects eligible for shortlisting in the New Zealand Architecture Awards, which will be announced in November.

The Carters Estate Tennis Pavilion has been praised as being “beautifully crafted and elegant”.

Father charged over death The father of a little boy who shot himself in the head with a loaded gun while his father was sleeping is being charged over his death.

Two-year-old Puniani Maile grabbed the gun his father, Tasman William Maile, 27, kept in the room the pair were sleeping in their Utah home and shot himself.

He died three days later.

Relatives have flown out from New Zealand to support the family after the incident two weeks ago.

Maile told police he always slept with his Walther CCP handgun “fully loaded and safety off, within arm’s reach”, Fox News reported.

He has been charged with child abuse homicide, the Daily Mail Australia reported.

Puniani was flown to Primary Children’s hospital on May 25

local time and put on life support, but died three days later surrounded by family, including extended family who had reportedly flown out from New Zealand to support his parents.

In a post on Facebook, Puniani’s grandmother and Maile’s mother-in-law Tule Iloa wrote of her support despite the charges.

“I love you Tas and I know you love Puniani – this is a time of unity, love, forgiveness and one.”

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sam Gill said police weighed several factors of the case carefully before charging Maile with homicide.

The way the young father stored his gun was a crucial factor.

“This is a little bit different than somebody who takes their weapon and puts it in a case up in the closet somewhere, hidden

Puniani Maile behind the clothes, and some child inadvertently finds it and shoots themselves,” he said.

As well as the homicide charge, Maile has been charged with obstruction of justice and possession of a controlled substance owing to a blue bucket found by police containing 10 ounces of

marijuana and a handgun magazine, the Daily Mail reported.

A neighbour said they saw Maile, with blood on his shirt, and his older son run to a dumpster and dispose of the bucket.

Officers also found a backpack with an empty gun case, believed to match the gun Maile was sleeping with, and two other handguns, court documents obtained by the Salt Lake Tribute said.

Maile has been released on bond.

Puniani’s mother was not home at the time and police said they found no furniture in the room Maile slept in with his two boys, indicating the trio may have been sleeping on the floor.

In a loving obituary, little Puniani was described as the “light of his family”.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club recently hosted a function where donations were made to several local charities and charities that help Ashburton residents.

Pakeke Lions Club president Joe Butchard welcomed representatives of several charities and noted that the club had assisted several of these charities for many years.

He said that most of the club’s donations are made towards the end of the Lion’s year, with the money raised during the year.

As the club raised its money locally, it aimed to assist local Ashburton charities, the Ashburton branches of larger organisations or out of town charities that had helped or would be likely to help Ashburton residents in the future, Butchard said.

The out-of-town charities included organisations like Ranui House (operated by the Bone Marrow Cancer Trust), Ronald McDonald, the Mia Foundation and the Westpac Helicopter Trust.

The club had limited resources, so it was important that the charities it helped, in turn collectively helped a wide cross section of the local community.

Donations were made to the Ashburton Cancer Society, Ashburton Hospital acute assessment unit, Riding for the Disabled, Ronald McDonald House, Ashburton 206 Club, Bone Marrow Cancer Trust (Ranui House), Mia Health and St John Cadets.

During the year the club also made donations to Borough School, Lions Club International Foundation, Lloyd Morgan, Mia Health, NZ Foundation for the Blind, Special Needs (Ashburton College), Ashburton Victim Support and Camp Quality South.

A separate donation was made to the Westpac Chopper Appeal at Garden City Aviation.

The money raised is from raffles, an annual market and garage sale, and assisting the A&P Association prepare its grounds for the annual show.

In brief Car bursts into flames A Toyota car burst into flames after ploughing into the back of another car that was stopped at a police checkpoint in Auckland on Saturday night. The accident occurred at the Patiki Road off-ramp on the north-western motorway just before 6pm, closing the city-bound off-ramp for nearly one-and-a-half hours. Nobody was injured in the accident, but the police said the 24-year-old male driver of the Toyota had been charged with driving with excess breath alcohol and careless driving. He is due to appear in the Auckland District Court on June 29.

Education review The Government has set up an advisory group to replace national standards in schools – but has kept it quiet, apparently because of public criticism of the proliferation of policy review groups. The 13-member Ministerial Advisory Group on the Curriculum, Progress and Achievement will report to Education Minister Chris Hipkins on new measures of student progress and achievement across Years 1 to 10 – two years beyond the old national standards. The Ministry of Education has also launched an online survey seeking the views of parents as well as educators, but Hipkins left it to ministry officials to announce it quietly on Friday.

The survey closes on June 28.

The latest advisory group was not included in 122 policy reviews which National Party leader Simon Bridges last week accused the new Labour-led Government of starting. It is due to report by September and will meet up to 10 times.

Bad weather to hit Gale-force winds and heavy rain are expected to hit the North Island midweek, replacing mainly fine conditions over the weekend.

A deepening sub-tropical low is forecast to move over the North Island from the north today before slowly moving off to the southeast of the country. Through tomorrow and Wednesday the low was expected to move southwards across the North Island, bringing southeast gales and heavy rain.

Man killed in crash A man is dead following a serious crash near Whakatane. The accident happened on Taneatua Rd about 10.15am yesterday.

Police are still working to formally identify the man and inform next of kin. The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash and the road has now reopened.

Trump retracts US support President Donald Trump has delivered a further blow to the US relationship with traditional allies by retracting his endorsement for a joint communique with G7 leaders and threatening to escalate a brewing trade war.

The US leader took to Twitter shortly after the summit in Canada ended yesterday, accusing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of dishonesty and withdrawing Washington’s endorsement of the statement which vowed to fight protectionism.

Trump recently ignited a trade dispute by imposing tariffs on his North American and European partners’ steel and aluminium exports and repeated a threat to impose tariffs on car imports.

At the close of the summit, host Trudeau said the new tariffs on Canada under national security pretexts were “insulting”

and that “Canadians are polite and reasonable but we will not be pushed around.”

He said retaliatory measures against the US would come into place on July 1, even though it was “not something we want to do”.

Canada is the US’ second largest trading partner and experts warn jobs on both sides of the border would be affected.

Trump, who left the summit early for his Singapore summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, took umbrage.

“Based on Justin’s false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our US farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our US Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the US Market!,” he tweeted from his plane.

“PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, ‘US Tariffs were kind of insulting’ and he ‘will not be pushed around.”

In response, Trudeau’s office said the prime minister had “said nothing he hasn’t said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the president” while an EU official told dpa the bloc would “stick to the communique as agreed by all participants.”

Trump’s about-turn also earned him a rebuke from long-time critic, Republican Senator John McCain, who tweeted to US allies, “Americans stand with you, even if our president doesn’t.”

Fleetwood guitarist dies Mick Fleetwood says former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Danny Kirwan has died at age 68. Fleetwood says in a Facebook post that Kirwan died on Friday in London. No cause of death was given.

Kirwan was part of the iconic band from 1968-1972, playing on the albums Then Play On, Blues Jam at Chess, Kiln House, Future Games and Bare Trees. Kirwan was among the eight members of the band who were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

Harry, Meghan join royal family on balcony The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have taken their places for the first time with the Queen on Buckingham Palace’s balcony after Trooping the Colour.

Harry and Meghan passed another royal milestone as husband and wife when they joined the Queen in acknowledging the crowds gathered in the Mall following the traditional ceremony to mark her official birthday.

The Queen was flanked by her sons, the Prince of Wales and Duke of York, at the front of the balcony, while the newlyweds stood behind her, surrounded by other members of the royal family.

The younger royals lined up in front of the adults to enjoy the fly-past of modern and historic aircraft, with Prince George and Princess Charlotte standing with their parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cam-

bridge. Charlotte clapped excitedly when the thousands of people gathered at the gates of Buckingham Palace applauded the aerial display.

But Peter and Autumn Phillips’ sevenyear-old daughter Savannah, who was with her sister Isla, could be seen playing up as everyone stood still while the national anthem was played.

The youngster could be seen fooling about with George and jokingly putting her hand over his mouth.

The Duke of Edinburgh, who has effectively retired from official public duties, was the only major figure missing from the gathering.

Four generations of the royal family were gathered on Buckingham Palace’s balcony to watch the traditional fly-past which featured modern Typhoon jets and also aircraft from the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight – an iconic Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster bomber.

Guatemala’s volcano emits more sediment Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire has released a new flow of burning sediment and rock, almost a week after its initial eruption left at least 110 people dead and 200 missing.

Guatemala’s seismology and vulcanology institute said yesterday the new lahar

– a flow of mud, debris and pyroclastic material – was fed by rains and tore down trees as it swept through ravines.

Institute director Eddy Sanchez said the risks from the Volcano of Fire are not over even though its activity has been decreas-

ing. He said the last time it erupted it took two and a half weeks to return to normal.

Official search efforts for the missing were suspended for the third day amid dangerous conditions.

Kiwi actress and former Shortland Street star Grace Palmer has had her first big break in Hollywood film Adrift.

The film, which is based on a true story, stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin as Tami Oldham Ashcraft and Richard Sharp, sailors who embarked on a voyage from Tahiti to San Diego in 1983. The pair run into Hurricane Raymond during their journey - one of the worst hurricanes in history. The movie depicts events leading up to the trip as well as the storm and its aftermath. Trying times for the government Y

ou may have missed it over the weekend but there was a by-election held in Auckland on Saturday, the first time voters have been able to turn out since last year’s general election.

It was for the seat of Birkenhead, and was necessary after the previous incumbent, Jonathan Coleman, resigned.

Conveniently for both major parties, either could claim it as a victory of sorts.

National’s Dan Bidois won the seat, albeit with a significantly reduced margin than was the case with Coleman after last year’s election.

However, given the much reduced turnout, as can be expected in a by-election, that was no real surprise.

Labour though, will also be relatively pleased with its performance, as even though it did not

win it will see the reduced margin as some sort of vindication of its performance, policies and budget during its first eight or nine months in office.

It’s been a trying time for the government, with it on occasion looking more than a bit uncertain when it came under pressure.

However, there are signs that it – and the leadership of Jacinda Ardern – has turned a corner.

Despite her popularity in the run-up to last year’s election Ardern was relatively untested

as a leader, and that has shown since, as she’s sometimes struggled with her new role of Prime Minister.

But the way she handled the recent announcement that the government backed a continuation of the strategy to eradicate rather than manage mycoplasma bovis showed real political nous.

Not only did she and Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor surround themselves with agriculture industry leaders when facing the press, they made the announcement at Federated Farmers’ head office in Wellington.

Those two decisions gave the impression that they were working with the sector, rather than against it, a criticism farmers have often levelled at Labour, whether it’s been in power or not.

Hearing from opposition agri-

culture spokesman Nathan Guy last week that the government and opposition were working together on the issue – rather than using it as a political football – has only strengthened my view on that.

So it’s an interesting time then, for Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters to take up the reins.

Sometime in the very near future, and we’re only talking weeks at the most, Ardern will step out of the prime ministerial hot seat to give birth to her first child, passing the leadership baton to Peters.

There are some people who are very nervous about this. Yes, they say, in the past he’s been a sometimes brilliant often unpredictable politician, but despite that longevity, does he still have it? Can he be trusted to lead the country?

Peters is 73 years old and during his visit to Ashburton as part of last year’s election campaign he looked older than I’d seen him before.

His age was finally catching up with him.

However, I’m not prepared to write him off just yet.

He has always been an astute political operator and the deal he wrangled out of Labour for his support in forming the government showed that’s still the case.

He is also a proud man, and will not want to drop that ball at this stage of his career, as if he does, that’s more than likely what he’ll be remembered for.

So I’m cautiously optimistic that he will make the most of his time as acting Prime Minister and the country won’t be worse off because of it.

Climate change measures need to be well thought out H

ere in Canterbury we certainly seem to have been experiencing more extreme weather over the past few years with significant flooding in autumn and winter in some areas and warmer temperatures during summer.

I am not an expert so I don’t know whether this is wholly or partially a result of climate change, but the scientific evidence is clear that globally greenhouse gases are contributing to an overall warming of the planet, resulting in melting polar ice caps and rising sea-levels.

The National Government signed the Paris Agreement on Climate Change in 2016 and this committed New Zealand to reducing our emissions of greenhouse gases by 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030.

In order to make progress towards reaching these targets we did a significant amount of work on increasing renewable energy, increasing the number of electric vehicles in New Zealand and reforming the Emissions Trading

While it is important that we continue to take action, it is critical that decisions are based on careful analysis of the latest scientific advice, as taking the wrong steps can decimate our most productive sectors, cost jobs and actually increase global emissions.

For example, a recently published study by researchers from New Zealand, the UK and Norway has shown that methane and carbon dioxide (CO2) behave differently in terms of how long they act to trap heat in the atmosphere.

Basically, while methane has a vigorous heating effect initially it lasts for a much shorter time

while CO2 has a weaker but near-permanent effect on temperatures.

The researchers have warned that if we focus too much on reducing agricultural methane instead of fossil carbon, then we will be making a mistake from a climate change perspective.

This kind of information is highly significant for agricultural countries such as New Zealand, where methane released by sheep and cattle amounts to nearly a third of our emissions.

Unfortunately the current Government’s track record in this area to date is not good.

It has become apparent that the decision to end new offshore oil and gas exploration in New Zealand went against the advice of officials that the decision would have a negligible impact on New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions and would likely lead to an increase in global emissions.

The Government was told that the decision would be likely to lead to higher gas prices and

reduce the security of supply as well as result in job losses from reduced investment and confidence in the sector and supporting industries.

However, the Prime Minister decided to go ahead with the announcement without getting Cabinet approval despite this being a “lose-lose” policy for both the environment and the economy.

There is too much at stake for decisions such as these to be driven by the political desire to be seen to be doing something and I hope that the Government will choose to heed official and expert advice on these matters from now on.

■ Preheat the oven to 220°C (200°C fan-forced). Grease the holes of a 12-hole muffin pan or mini quiche pans lightly with butter or cooking spray.

■ Line the pans with pastry, jigsawing the pastry together and re-rolling the trimmings so not to waste any. Chill the lined pans in the freezer while you prepare the filling.

■ Bake the tomatoes for 15 minutes, or until they are puffed and starting to collapse. Remove from the oven and reduce the temperature to 190°C (170°C fan-forced).

■ In a large jug or bowl, mix together the eggs, milk, cream, salt and pepper and half of the

Parmesan cheese. Whisk the mixture well with a fork. Stir through the basil and set aside.

■ Divide the tomatoes between the pastry cases and pour the egg mixture over the top.

■ Sprinkle the remaining Parmesan over each quiche and bake until the pastry is golden and the filling is set but still a little jiggly, about 15 minutes.

Ashburton District reliant on dairy in Townies have learned a couple of new words related to the dairy industry: Mycoplasma bovis.

The cattle disease is causing unimaginable levels of stress and anxiety for our dairy farmers, some who have been forced to cull healthy cows showing no sign of the disease.

Most of us know someone at the coalface on the farm, working for a company in the agricultural field or helping deal with the incursion.

The Guardian’s rural reporter Colin Williscroft has been following the outbreak since the disease was first discovered on a South Canterbury dairy farm nearly a year ago and says we should all be concerned (see Pages 4-5).

Anything that affects dairy farming in Mid Canterbury affects the town of Ashburton as the spinoffs in money and jobs are passed on.

As a district, we have some of the best farmers in the business and some of the biggest herds in the country.

The latest New Zealand Dairy Statistics report records 410 herds between the Rangitata and Rakaia rivers; one in four herds is owned by a sharemilker, the rest by farm

owner-operators. The average herd is 827 cows, compared to a national average of 414, and the average cow produces 440kg of milksolids a year – the highest in the country.

The district is home to almost 340,000 cows – nearly 10 cows for every person who lives here.

Nationally, dairy cattle numbers were 6.5 million in 2017, a slight decrease, though herds in the Canterbury region remained strong and actually increased thanks to access to irrigation.

As an industry, it is our largest.

In the Ashburton District Council’s latest economic report, dairy cattle farming accounted for 29 per cent of our GDP last year and the industry generated 10 per cent of all jobs, nearly 2000.

Add on jobs in related areas, like meat processing and agricultural services, and farming’s reach in Mid Canterbury is clear.

Milk companies paid our dairy farmers around $1000 million and those farmers in turn spent that money employing others, buying goods and services to keep their farms ticking over and paying off debt.

The industry is a big deal to us: When dairy farmers are smiling,

so is everyone else.

And when it comes to people, Mid Canterbury can boast some of the most successful and innovative in the country.

These farmers are using technology and precision agriculture tools to make sure they apply irrigation water for grass and feed crops only when needed, to monitor cow health and capture nitrates that might run off into waterways or underground aquifers.

Lincoln University is leading a project with Ravensdown to treat washdown water from the cowshed and recycle it, reducing the environmental impacts of effluent discharge on farms and transforming green water so that it can be confidently reused as yard wash.

All over the district, there are top performers setting an example for others and helping them meet the challenges of modern-day dairying.

Right now, most farms are gearing up for the calving season.

Farmers are keeping an eye on pregnant cows to make sure they stay in good condition and staff will be getting a break over winter before the new milking season begins.

Calf rearing is a crucial part of the chain, with the first eight months of their life dictating what sort of milk producers they will become. It is hard slog by those tasked with feeding them but a chance to know the cows that will eventually join their herds.

Fonterra, the largest of our milk companies, is expecting milk production to rise 1.5 per cent next season on top of a continued positive global supply and demand picture. It has forecast a price of $7 per kgMS for the 2018-19 season and the strong opening price will be welcome news for farmers, still recovering from much lower milk prices in 2015 and 2016.

Ten years ago there were a small number of Filipinos working on dairy farms around the Ashburton District.

They were the pioneers who saw opportunities for work and a new life in a new country and they had the courage to leave behind family, friends and their culture.

For those early arrivals life in a new country also came with a sense of isolation and a need to build new support networks.

And one of those new, New Zealanders Earl Magtibay did just that. He contacted other Filipinos working on farms in the district and established an informal group that met for support and friendship.

News of the support group spread and what started as a handful of Rakaia dairy farm workers has grown to a 300 plus strong member group and growing. Add family members to that number and it runs well over 1000.

The story of the Filipino Dairy Workers’ support group was told to a national audience at the Trustpower Community Awards earlier this year.

As winners of the Ashburton regional Trustpower awards, the

group went to national finals in Queenstown hoping to win the supreme title.

The national event celebrated the work of voluntary groups and organisations from around New Zealand and 24 groups were competing for the title.

Magtibay said it was hard condensing a 10-year story into eight minutes but it was an important story.

“We believe it is something special. We want to make our district proud,” he said.

They didn’t win the supreme award, but the chance to tell their story was priceless.

They conduct free seminars on employment rights, immigration, and progress in the dairy industry to keep their members up-todate.

One of its achievements has been successfully petitioning to have mobile consular services in Ashburton, saving workers time and money travelling to renew their passports. Because of their actions, this service is now offered nationwide.

Where to from here with mycoplasma What a difference a year makes.

Less than 12 months ago very few, if any, Mid Canterbury people had heard of mycoplasma bovis.

Today it’s a subject that everyone is at least aware of, its importance to the local community reflected by a crowd of around 800 people that recently packed into the Hotel Ashburton to hear “where to from here” for farmers, along with others who work in the rural sector.

So how did it come to this?

It was July last year that the disease was first confirmed in New Zealand, after a vet treating cattle on a dairy farm near Glenavy became suspicious of some of the symptoms the sick cows were showing, sparking an investigation that led to New Zealand joining just about every other country worldwide in having the disease present.

Despite very few people here, including most farmers, knowing anything about it, M. bovis is common in most cattle producing countries around the world, occurring throughout Australia, North America and Europe.

Although the disease causes illness in cattle, including

mastitis, abortion, pneumonia and arthritis, it’s important to realise that the disease does not affect people – it is not a food safety risk and as such is not a threat to New Zealand’s primary exports.

About a week before Christmas the Mid Canterbury farming community received the news no one here wanted to hear, with an announcement by the Ministry for Primary Industries that a farm near Ashburton was strongly suspected of having the disease present in its herd.

A couple of weeks later MPI confirmed an Ashburton farm was infected, although it was not the property first suspected.

The confirmed property was identified through a milk surveillance programme, not through tracing suspected

MPI followed up the Ashburton announcement quickly, organising public meetings in Methven and Ashburton a week later to give farmers a heads-up

about what to look out for and what was being done to trace and restrict the spread.

DairyNZ biosecurity readiness and response manager Chris Morley told people at those meetings that the disease is known as a “silent spreader” – cows can be infected but not fall ill.

During the last five or six months an increasing number of infected cows have been identified, the majority of which

are in the South Island.

Canterbury and Southland have become M. bovis hotspots, with a total of 35 infected properties in the two regions identified since the disease was first identified.

That compares to four in the whole of the North Island.

Although it was on farms in

the South Canterbury/North Otago area where M. bovis was first discovered in New Zealand, it looks like it was actually Southland where it originally spread from.

Investigations into how it arrived in New Zealand are ongoing, although that may never

be known for sure.

In reality, exactly where it came from matters little to those who have had whole herds culled as part of the strategy to eradicate the disease.

Pendarves farmer Frank Peters was one who took the bull by the horns and spoke publicly about what it was like for farmers to see their life’s work taken away, particularly distressing because, in Peters’ case, none of his cows displayed any symptoms. They all looked healthy but that did not stop them from being destroyed.

It was Peters who also first made public the frustrations felt by many farmers whose herds had been identified as infected, particularly over what’s been described as a lack of communication from MPI about the decisions that affect farmers’ livelihoods, along with the speed of compensation.

Reports in the days following the recent public meeting at the Hotel Ashburton suggest that both the flow of information and the speed of compensation payments have both improved.

In the meantime the jury is still out as to whether eradication of M. bovis from New Zealand is still possible.

Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor still believes there is a better than 50 per cent chance that it can be.

Others are not so sure and there are a number of trigger points that MPI is monitoring. If these are reached it may be the strategy is instead changed to helping farmers self-manage the disease, like they do with others.

Calving will be a key time, given it’s a time when cows are under stress – which is when symptoms are more likely to show themselves.

What is also uncertain is the flow-on economic impact on rural communities such as Mid Canterbury.

Uncertainty will mean farmers are less likely to spend on new equipment, which will affect any number of businesses downstream that rely on farmers opening their wallets.

So while dairy payouts are looking good and beef prices are also strong, the double whammy of M. bovis and increased compliance costs will have farmers being more careful than usual about spending.

That reluctance will affect those who run businesses in towns like Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia.

Award winners share their insights Rangitata dairy farmers Daniel and Paula McAtamney have been outstanding in their field this past year.

The couple were the Canterbury-North Otago share farmers of the year winners of this year’s Dairy Industry Awards and went on to represent the region at the national awards recently.

The McAtamneys, aged 30 and 25 years, are relatively new to the dairy industry, having only entered in 2014.

Prior to that Daniel was a beef, sheep and deer farmer, while Paula was nursing.

They attribute their success to their full involvement in their business, where they contract milk about 1150 cows on Rob Wilson’s 300 hectare Rangitata Dairies farm.

One of the reasons they entered the awards was to learn and challenge themselves.

“The competition process has enabled us to analyse our system and encourage our drive for the future,” say the couple.

“We are proud of what we have learnt and achieved, given the short time we have been in the industry,” Paula said.

“We both grew up on farms and love working with animals, being

outdoors and just being on the land.”

The couple see their strong partnership as a strength of their business. “We are both fully involved in the business, both onand-off farm,” Daniel said.

“We bring a wide and varied skill set to our business which allows consistency, high quality workmanship and top performance.”

Future farming goals include farm ownership. “We enjoy

learning and challenging ourselves,” say the McAtamneys.

Their vision is to operate their farm to a high standard, so they can be proud of their achievements and be recognised for that.

They also want to build a solid equity base through farming and off-farm investments, to ensure they have a solid financial future.

Along the way they want to continually expand their knowledge and have the courage to take on new challenges, while at the same time creating a balanced and positive home life.

The judges of the environment award noted the good systems and procedures the McAtamneys had in place to not only capture information and data relating to the environment and effluent management.

The couple also put an emphasis on communication and use technology such as iMessage and iNotes, while also more traditional methods, like whiteboards in the shed.

Meeting the agri challenges DairyNZ recently launched Go Dairy, an interactive website designed to encourage young people to consider a career in the diverse and vibrant dairy sector.

The website is aimed at high school students, people in their 20s, people seeking a career change, parents and teachers.

It includes information on recommended school subjects, tertiary study and training. There are also links to job search sites and information on DairyNZ’s awards and scholarships.

Channel marketing manager Andrew Fraser said the sector needed motivated and passionate people with a range of skills to meet current and emerging challenges.

New Zealand leads the world in dairy and the sector is one of the country’s largest employers.

Challenges include continually improving the relationship between dairying and the environment, and ensuring New Zealand dairy remains competitive in the international market.

“Working in the dairy sector gives young people many opportunities. It is a dynamic and ever-changing sector. Young people get the chance to learn

“As well as hard working and strategic people on-farm, the dairy sector needs rural professionals to help farmers improve their farm businesses, research scientists to find answers to complex questions with benefits in real life, and environmental and greenhouse

gas specialists to find new solutions. These are just a few of the many roles.

“We encourage young people interested in a career in dairy to visit the Go Dairy website, talk to others in the sector, visit workplaces they are interested in, ask questions and research areas of interest on the internet.

We also encourage people to get a mentor who can share their knowledge and experience and be a sounding board,” Fraser said.

Cheyenne Wilson says the Ahuwhenua Young Maori Farmer competition is a good way of strengthening her skills and building on her leadership ambitions.

Award finalist passionate about industry There’s not a lot of young Maori women occupying leadership roles in the dairy industry but Hinds Young Farmers chair Cheyenne Wilson is hoping to do her bit to change that.

Wilson, who has been working as an assistant manager for Nathan and Erin Christian on Lochan Mor farm near Ashburton Forks, was one of three finalists in the 2018 Ahuwhenua Young Maori Farmer Award for dairy.

The 25-year-old has spent all her life on farms but has only been dairying for the past five years, before that working in shearing sheds and as a cook.

She freely admits dairying wasn’t something she set out to do, falling into it by chance, but since her first taste she knew it felt right for her.

“I was juggling about four jobs in Southland when a local farmer there asked me if I could help his wife with some calf rearing,” she said.

Wilson took to it so quickly that it wasn’t long before she was offered a fulltime job.

“I’ve always enjoyed working in the outdoors and with animals,” she said.

“But it’s the people that are the most important part of a farming business – and (in dairying) they’re the best.”

The clear pathway within the industry also appealed.

After three years on the Southland farm Wilson took the plunge and moved to Canterbury, something that on the surface was quite daunting as she didn’t know anyone in the area.

“I was completely out of my comfort zone.”

However, on her second night in the province Wilson headed along to a meeting of the local young farmers club and immediately felt welcomed.

“Getting involved (with the club) was a quick way for me to meet people and develop friendships,” she said.

Before she knew it Wilson was voted in as secretary of the club, which she has gone on to chair since July last year, while she also serves on the Aorangi Young Farmers regional executive.

Wilson is a firm believer in putting something back into the industry and these days she is also a regional leader for the Dairy Women’s Network in Mid Canterbury, a role she finds very rewarding.

Last year’s runner-up in the Canterbury/North Otago section of the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards for trainee of the year, Wilson finds entering awards is a good way of increasing her knowledge, while at the same time as

enhancing her career prospects.

She said the Ahuwhenua Young Maori Farmer competition is a good way of strengthening her skills and building on her leadership ambitions.

“I’d definitely like to see more young women in leadership roles (in the dairy industry). I want to encourage more young Maori women to get into farming.”

It’s her second attempt at the Ahuwhenua award.

“I entered two years ago but I’d only been in the industry for three years so I was pretty fresh. I’d only worked for one farmer so I only really knew one way of farming.”

The process of entering is pretty easy, she said.

“You’ve just got to fill in a form online and have the backing of your employer, who has to write a reference.

“The four judges don’t grill you at all.

You tell them what you want to achieve and how you plan to do that.”

Wilson gave the judges a Powerpoint presentation, which included details about the farm she worked on and what her role was.

She thinks her attitude was a key reason for being named a finalist.

“I’m pretty passionate about what I do and how I do it.”

Her Maori values show through, Wilson said, despite the fact that being born in Southland but with her marae being in the Bay of Plenty, she feels urbanised and hasn’t had the opportunities to engage in te ao Maori and tikanga Maori to the extent that she would like to – something she plans to change.

One of those values concerns the stewardship of the land, and making sure farming practices will look after resources for future generations, while another involves a more social aspect – making sure everyone feels welcome.

This month Wilson is moving to Culverden to manage a 600 cow farm for Emlyn Francis.

Silver award for ‘dream’ dairy Darfield’s Rural Building Solutions Limited (RBS) won Silver at the NZ Master Builders Commercial Project Awards in Auckland in May, at a sold-out gala evening at Skycity.

RBS provides quality dairy shed design and build services to the full Canterbury region, including Ashburton District and this was their second entry and second award.

Owners Nigel and Ruth Hodges, who have a background in the commercial building industry, set up RBS in 2009 to provide commercial building quality to the rural sector.

“I found the rural building industry had very inconsistent quality and results,” Nigel commented. “Coming from a commercial background I knew we could offer high quality results every time.”

Confirmation that RBS has achieved just that has come in the form of the Silver Award from the NZ Master Builders Commercial Project Awards for 2018.

The silver award was for a full dairy facility for Waipapa Farm near Swannanoa, owned by Peter and Kristy Schouten. This

included a 60 bail rotary shed, 5036m2 feedpad, silage bunkers and effluent management system, that sets a new standard in the dairy industry.

Peter and Kristy’s request was for a project to create their

‘dream’ milking facility while fitting in with the property’s layout, and current and future environmental regulations.

They wanted a building that was aesthetically pleasing, with the utmost practicality.

Somewhere that staff would enjoy working, which also considered the needs and preferences of the cows.

After looking at some of Nigel’s other builds in Canterbury, Peter and Kristy knew RBS was the right company to build their dream dairy.

Nigel noted “This has been a fantastic example of getting things right first time, and future proofing a dairy farm.

It has really taken things to the next level”.

“The project hasn’t been about meeting minimum compliance standards, but about embracing the future direction of dairying.

Effluent recycling, solar power and feed pad are just three of the environmental innovations included at Waipapa Farm”.

Peter and Nigel were so proud of the finished product that they held an open day for the public to see around the new facility.

There was a big turnout from North, South and Central Canterbury, demonstrating how valuable farmers find it to actually see for themselves what others are doing.

This open day also resulted in new clients requesting RBS to complete new projects.

fter being lulled to sleep by breaking waves in the charismatic bolt-hole of Kiama, I swapped the caress of the coast for the heights of hinterland, with a swing through the Southern Highlands of New South Wales.

I was heading for Bowral, before completing my southern self-drive, by looping back to Sydney. A coast and highlands self-drive combo is the winning formula for a memorable roadie

Pulling out of Kiama, I ventured west on Tourist Drive 9 to Robertson, a stirringly picturesque driving route that winds through lush and rolling hills and dales, criss-crossed with quaint leafy lanes, on its steady climb into the Highlands.

Rolling through such a bucolic escape-hatch from the rat race, I was struck by the hundreds of dry stone walls that lace the landscape, interwoven into the dreamy tapestry of pastoral greens.

many of the walls were constructed in the 19th century and have stood the test of time. Many of them are attributed to Thomas Newing who soldiered away, building wall after wall for over 60 years!

If you’ve done some pre-trip planning, you’ll soon discover there are a plethora of delightful detours and stopovers along the way.

Jamberoo is a charming village en-route, with an Insta-worthy Tudor-style historic inn lording over the main street. It’s a perennial favourite amongst classic car clubs undertaking a group roadie.

From there, I headed up Jamberoo Mountain Road, and took the short diversion to Minnamurra Rainforest, a rare remnant of temperate rainforest thronging with ancient fig trees, rock orchids and elkhorns.

A sense of serenity washed over me as I strolled up the path to clap eyes on the sublime Minnamurra Falls, gracefully tumbling over the canyon’s cliff edge.

Back in the car, I purred through the forest-draped mountain road to reach Robertson, famous as the town where the BABE film was made.

They’re also very proud of their potatoes, Robo Spuds. Like all towns and villages across the Southern Highlands, I soon discovered they are particularly

parochial about their prowess in pies. With more pie outlets per square km than anywhere else in Australia, the region has crafted a dedicated Pie Trail, with scores of outlets touting their hero product.

June is prime “Pie Time” when an annual festival is staged on the back of the latest pie judging results.

Robertson Pie Shop is a proven performer, if you’re feeling peckish.

From Robertson, I took Tourist Drive 15, to layover at Fitzroy Falls, en-route to Moss Vale.

The Highlands brim with water-curtain spectacles, but Fitzroy Falls is the cascading king, with a spectacularly-sized waterfall and wonderful walking tracks, abuzz with wildflowers, wildlife and stirring views across sandstone escarpments. After recent rain, it’s euphoria-inducing.

Moss Vale is a gem of a town, cultivating a fiendish following for its magnificent homeware specialty stores. Top stops include Bowerbird on Argyle, a luxurious emporium of fine textiles, artwork and quirky gifts, while Suzie Anderson’s Home is an equally elegant hive of homeware temptation and inspiration.

Peckish? Hot-foot it to Bernie’s Diner, a Moss Vale main street institution for nearly a century, and proud winner of the region’s Best Pie last year.

Bowral is the home town of one of the sport’s most famous sons, Sir Donald Bradman. I felt duly obliged to survey his home ground, picturebook-pretty Bowral Oval.

It’s a very short drive from Moss Vale to Bowral, the biggest town in the Southern Highlands, abuzz with attractions. Cricket fans rejoice – Bowral is the home town of one of the sport’s most famous sons, Sir Donald Bradman.

I felt duly obliged to survey his home ground, picturebookpretty Bowral Oval, which rubs shoulders with the Bradman Centre.

This magnificent shrine to the Aussie legend, showcases over 35,000 artefacts, including bats, uniforms, trophies and film footage, stretched over five galleries.

Immortalised in a life-size bronze statue next to the oval, the Boy from Bowral is not the town’s only famous resident.

The creator of Mary Poppins, P. L. Travers, is also cast in bronze at Glebe Park, the statue pays tribute to the fact that she lived in Bowral from 1907 to 1917.

Bowral has carved out a solid

reputation as a discerning destination for shoppers, whether it’s for fashion and designer accessories, collectibles, artworks or vintage wares.

Driving down the town’s golden mile, the inimitablynamed Bong Bong Street, the rain started tumbling in heavy, fat bullets. Eager to venture indoors, I headed for Dirty Janes.

This remarkable emporium is spread across three repurposed warehouses, groaning with over 75 dealers specialising in quality vintage, antiques and retro goods, from all over the world.

And while you’re there, stake out The Potting Shed, which serves a smashing High Tea in its verdant courtyard.

Another headline retail haunt in Bowral is the Royal Doulton Outlet shop, which also stocks prized pieces of Waterford, Wedgewood and Royal Albert.

night at the Gibraltar Hotel Bowral, a leafy and luxurious country retreat, overlooking Gibraltar Country Club golf course and backed by the Gibbergunyah Reserve.

I had the pleasure of dining at San Fior, adjoined by the playful Harvey’s Bar, a superb space with an outdoor terrace overlooking the greens.

Dance skills in spotlight

It was go time at the Life Dance Academy this month, as 200 budding dancers flaunted their best moves for a Christchurch-based judge.

The group held their annual medal tests at the New Life Church at the start of June.

The community-based dance group focus largely on jazz and hip hop, and during the medal test dancers perform in small groups.

Awards of different levels are dished out to dancers based on their category – in the form of bronze, silver and gold medals.

“Everyone was awesome this year,” teacher Anna Raukawa said.

“This year we again allowed parents to sit and watch their children, which is unusual for a medal test but we feel it is in the best interests of our dancers. We like to make sure everyone gets on stage, no matter if they’re feeling a bit nervous, so [teacher] Madi often goes onto stage with them to help. In our opinion everyone deserves their turn to shine.”

Classes had spent most of term one practicing, she said. Between Madi Wilson and Raukawa, 21

classes are taught weekly.

The academy ranges from toddlers right through to the three popular adult “dancefit” classes which are specifically designed for women. Madi also teaches three classes for boys.

The academy is based in a studio on the premises of the New Life Church in Tinwald. The stage which they perform on has recently been extended.

Medal tests are held each year as a way for dancers to gauge

their progress.

“Everything went really well this year, we are very proud of our dancers,” Wilson said.

“We probably had about 600 people though the building during the medal tests.”

Sculpted head of mystery king found An enigmatic sculpture of a king’s head dating back nearly 3000 years has set off a modern-day mystery caper as scholars try to figure out whose face it depicts.

The five centimetre sculpture is a rare example of figurative art from the Holy Land during the 9th century BC – a period associated with biblical kings.

Exquisitely preserved but for a bit of missing beard, nothing quite like it has been found before.

While scholars are certain the stern bearded figure donning a

golden crown represents royalty, they are less sure which king it symbolises, or which kingdom he may have ruled.

Archaeologists unearthed the diminutive figurine in 2017 during excavations at a site called Abel Beth Maacah, located just south of Israel’s border with Lebanon, near the modern-day town of Metula.

Nineteenth-century archaeologists identified the site, then home to a village called Abil al-Qamh, with the similarly named city

mentioned in the Book of Kings.

During the 9th century BC, the ancient town was situated in a liminal zone between three regional powers: the Aramean kingdom based in Damascus to the east, the Phoenician city of Tyre to the west, and the Israelite kingdom, with its capital in Samaria to the south.

Kings 1 15:20 mentions Abel Beth Maacah in a list of cities attacked by the Aramean King Ben Hadad in a campaign against the Israelite kingdom.

Scott Dixon led the last 119 laps at Texas yesterday, winning his second consecutive IndyCar race and quickly breaking a tie for the third-most career wins in IndyCar history. Dixon scored his 43rd career victory a week after winning at Detroit to match Michael Andretti and trails only AJ Foyt’s 67 and Mario Andretti’s 52. After taking the lead on the Texas oval in the 248-lap race, he never gave it up. “The car was just stuck,” Dixon said.

“Whatever we did, the car was just nailed. It was a bit loose at times, but I just can’t thank the team enough. The pit stops were fantastic.”

Crawford thumps Horn

Mark’s a champion The locals didn’t have to wait long for their first taste of success at the New Zealand Indoor Bowls championships at the EA Networks Centre, with one of the first events seeing national glory for Ashburton’s Mark Sheard.

Sheard, who plays out of the Ashburton MSA, was crowned the New Zealand Masters singles champion yesterday afternoon after he saw off a strong field of players in the over 60s event to claim the title.

Up against former championship winner, Andrew Brunton, Sheard did things the hard way.

He was down by at least seven shots early in the match and looked destined for a runner-up prize, but managed to claw his way back into the match.

On the last end, Sheard trailed 9-10, but managed to secure the two required shots to grab the victory – and the national title.

Ashburton players made a strong bid in the Masters section which is open to any player over the age of 60, with nine players working their way through the qualifying stages to earn the right to return yesterday for knockout play.

Graeme Ranson made his way through to the final 16 before he was eliminated.

In the open singles section, an all-South Island affair between Gary Low of Southland and Robert Wilson of South Otago took place.

In another hard fought encounter over 12 ends, Low led 9-5 after seven ends and then Wilson fought back to level the match 8-8 scoring one shot on the final end to level the match.

On the deciding end Low had to disturb the head and moved the jack to the side of the mat.

When he came to play his last bowl he was three down on the head. He calmly got down and drew the shot to clinch the title 9-8.

Three Ashburton players qualified for the knockout section of the competition with Matt Markham’s effort to work his way through to the final 32 players of the competition the best of the local results.

Players will be back on the mats at the EA Networks Centre from early this morning as they get into the pairs qualifying rounds.

Jeff Horn’s reign as WBO welterweight champion has come to a crashing end at the hands of Terence Crawford, who claimed the belt with a dominant display yesterday in Las Vegas. Crawford was a class above from start to finish, totally overwhelming Horn to hand the Australian a comprehensive defeat – his first in 20 professional fights. Referee Robert Byrd stopped the fight with 27 seconds to go in the ninth round.

Hurdler gives rivals a lesson The Shackler coped admirably at Trentham with both weight of expectation and the top of handicap.

Strongly fancied in the market on Saturday, the sprightly 11-yearold produced a faultless frontrunning performance under 69kg to hammer his opposition in the K S Browne Hurdle (3200m).

“He relaxed well, but I was a bit worried when they started coming at him,” trainer Paul Nelson said.

“Wee Biskit came up to him and he said I don’t want to see you and away he went.”

As he had done when successful in the Waikato Hurdles (3200m), The Shackler revelled in his work at the head of the field and measured his jumps well.

The son of Istidaad was eyeballed three flights from home, but he jumped the last two fences with precision and drew clear for

what was a hollow victory.

“We got away with a soft lead and Thatz David challenged and then dropped off and Wee Biskit did pretty much the same,” regular rider Aaron Kuru said.

“With the 69kg it was a good test for him today, but he was too good.”

Thatz David rallied well in the closing stages to cut Wee Biskit out of third money with the northern visitor El Corby a sound fourth in his opening jumping outing of the winter.

The Shackler completed an early double for Nelson and Kuru following their success in the Pak ‘n’ Save Upper Hutt Steeplechase (4000m) with Perry Mason, raced by the successful I See Red Syndicate.

“It’s a big thrill for the syndicate, they’ve had well over 30 winners since they got going in the early 2000s,” Nelson said.

Sadhana’s owners an ardent lot Scott Leader – were keen to buy a horse.

“I met the (new) owners after Dad (Murray) bought her, we own 20 percent each,” Swain confirmed. “When I gave Sadhana her first preparation I didn’t think much of her but then the penny dropped.”

Last September, by then a three-year-old, Sadhana won a workout and a trial. She qualified at Winton in 3:02.1, all but nine seconds within the time required.

Passionate is the way Aaron Swain describes the group of four owners he hadn’t even met before he bought Sadhana to race with them.

And at Ascot Park on Saturday afternoon, the story had a happy ending when the Swain-trained filly delivered over 1700 metres to make the four first-time owners first-time winners.

It all began about a year ago when a friend of Swain’s told him that the youthful group of builders, boat builders and fishermen – Hayden Stronoch, Connor Hillis, Shane Stronoch and

to go to the races. So, she went to Invercargill, finished seventh and then had six months out.

“She’s a lot stronger and more mature now, and they are just the best bunch of owners.

“They come and see her once a week and have been to all her workouts and trials.”

From five off the gate in the hands of Nathan Williamson, Sadhana went forward early in search of the lead but it wasn’t there for her. She was forced to sit parked to the turn, found the front and had to fight all the way home to hold it.

“That wasn’t the plan, I didn’t think she’d be strong enough, she really had to be tough,” said Swain.

The win was the second of three on the day for Williamson who guided Crusher Collins to victory in the rating 50 trot.

His third was in the R46 pace aboard Dachy who was recording her fifth win at her 50th start.

Shane Walkinshaw also bagged three, winning with his own horse Glens Of Tekoa, the Robin Swain-trained Magnetic Watch and Doug McLachlan’s Franco Huntington.

The only disappointing aspect of promising stayer Suliman’s win at Te Rapa on Saturday for co-trainer Graham Richardson was that he couldn’t be on-course to share in the victory celebrations with the horse’s large group of owners.

Richardson was in Brisbane with The Wildflower, who was engaged in the Brisbane Cup, but managed to watch Suliman produce a stirring home straight rally in the Phelan Stables 2100 to snare his second career victory. The win was greeted in boisterous fashion by the four-year-old’s owners. - NZME

Rakaia charges into final

Rakaia will get another shot at Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Cup glory after sealing a place in the rugby competition’s final with a 28-16 win over Springston on Saturday.

Last year’s beaten finalists always looked in control against the competition newcomers at the Rakaia Domain, despite Springston putting the first points on the board in the semi-final.

In a vastly different start to the quarter-finals, where Rakaia dominated Saracens early, barely letting the visitors get their hands on the ball, it was Springston applying early pressure in the semifinal.

The side, who were on a fairytale run in their first season back in the top flight, were rewarded through a penalty which put them out to an early 3-0 lead, but once Rakaia got the ball, they quickly returned the favour with a penalty to Tom HanhamCarter. From there, it was Rakaia’s game.

They went on attack and were rewarded almost immediately when Hanham-Carter ran in under the posts after a strong build up which featured a couple of impressive line breaks from halfback Cory Sinclair and fullback Andrew Letham, playing in his first game back after a stint on the sideline through injury.

Springston ensured they kept in touch with another penalty before Letham decided to get in on the action himself, scoring a try which put his side out to a 17-6 lead.

Springston scored their first try before half time, but not to be outdone, Rakaia matched it with one from Thomas Blyth to give themselves a 22-16 lead at the break.

Many would’ve been expecting Rakaia to run away with it in the second half, with the wind at their backs and a couple of big players due to make an appearance off the bench in the form of Seta Koroitamana and Timoci Nabakeke, but they didn’t.

In fact, Springston scored the only try of the second half, with Rakaia only managing to add two penalties to their tally.

Fortunately for them, it was enough.

Rakaia coach Wayne Foxcroft said it was a win, but it wasn’t perfect, and his side still had things to work on if they were to topple Waihora this weekend.

Australian rugby fans haven’t had much to cheer about during the Super Rugby season but the national side lifted their spirits when it stopped the Irish juggernaut in its tracks. Undefeated in its previous 12 tests, Ireland met its match in the form of a dogged side which stood up in the important moments.

Captain Michael Hooper led a team with some new additions to its forward pack, including Caleb Timu, Brandon Paenga-Amosa and Pete Samu, and while there were some teething problems the home side showed plenty of resilience to win 18-9. The visitors had to rely on three penalty goals to make a dent on the scoreboard.

Hansen hits back

BY GREGOR PAUL Another test, another range of refereeing inconsistencies leading to accusations of double standards and dirty play – life is back to normal for the All Blacks.

Their 52-11 victory against France contained a 30-minute blast of particularly good rugby and yet the post-game focus has fallen squarely on two tackles.

Perhaps understandably given that the French, as even the All Blacks admit, were unfairly shown a yellow card for a non-high tackle while such a punishment wasn’t reciprocated when the home side appeared to do the same thing.

And so, given the different fates of each team, the All Blacks once again face accusations they are a protected species employing illegal tactics.

This seemed to be the view from the French camp after the game, making them the latest in a long line of opponents to have aired a grievance about the All Blacks.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has heard it all before and tends to accept that as the world’s number one side, they can’t escape the scrutiny, valid or not.

Steven Hansen “We have been called cheats for 100 years haven’t we? If you keep winning, people will find reasons I suppose,” he said.

“Richie McCaw was the biggest cheat ever. But he didn’t cheat he just played to the letter of the law.

“When Auckland were playing Canterbury they were the biggest cheats then Canterbury got on top and they were the biggest cheats … you have just got to roll with that sort of stuff.”

Hansen is more concerned that rugby authorities are continuing to take an inflexible approach to a complex issue.

But not all high tackles are the same – and the situation at Eden Park was compounded by the refusal of referee Luke Pearce to use the TMO to support his decisionmaking.

French lock Paul Gabrillagues was yellow carded despite the fact the initial contact on Ryan Crotty wasn’t high. In real time it looked bad, but on the replay, it was borderline whether it was even a penalty.

The second twas the double team hit by Sam Cane and Ofa Tu’ungafasi on Remy Grosso which resulted in the French wing fracturing his skull in two places.

“I can understand that they will be a little miffed when their guy got yellow carded. I don’t think their guy should have been yellow carded,” Hansen said. “Nor do I think that Ofa should have been yellow carded.”

Perhaps the sense of contradictory refereeing wouldn’t have arisen had the inexperienced Pearce not been so determined to make his decision based on what he saw in real time. Most observers were sure they had seen an atrocity but the replay killed that notion – but Pearce had already made his decision before he checked.

Wakanui captain Sam Moore reckons his side’s 8-6 win over Temuka in the Mid/South Canterbury senior men’s hockey competition was one of the most bizarre he’s ever played in.

As the scoreline suggested, it was all action from whoa-to-go.

From the opening hit-off Wakanui strung a couple of passes together and scored with just 30 seconds gone. From the restart Temuka strung a couple of passes away and earned themselves a penalty corner which they converted.

“It was the weirdest game of hockey I have ever played, it was mad,” Moore said.

“Guys were just walking in goals. We were just trading goals like nothing.”

By half time Wakanui were out to a 6-3 lead.

“And then it was 8-3 with about 10 min-

utes to go and old mate Hayden Shaw organised a bit of a push in the last five minutes and they got three goals back,” Moore said.

Moore said his side’s goals were shared around while Sam Bennett had an outstanding game given the challenge he faced.

That challenge involved running at Shaw – a former Black Stick – in penalty corners.

Shaw was well known for his legendary drag flicks at international level during his long career with the Black Sticks.

Despite the loss Temuka maintained their place at the top of the senior men’s competition leaderboard, while Wakanui were now in second.

“We won, number one, and because we got over four goals we got the bonus point, so we got the maximum amount we could’ve out of that game,” Moore said.

part of the Mid Canterbury side which won the Ian Smith Trophy last weekend, at the annual tournament, in Cromwell.

“We scored more goals (on Saturday) than we did the whole weekend last week over five games,” Moore said.

Meanwhile, Hampstead picked up a 4-2 win over Cambridge on Saturday to cement their position as the team to beat in this season’s Mid/South Canterbury senior women’s hockey competition.

Two goals to Sam Dalziel and one each to Sarah Hayman and Hannah Mowat secured Hampstead the win.

Hampstead coach Rex Turnbull said it wasn’t a pretty win, but it was a win.

“We made some bad decisions but I think we probably had the better of the game, in my view anyway.”

The win also ensured Hampstead’s unbeaten run this season continued, with a draw the only blemish on their record, but

Turnbull wasn’t getting too excited. There was still a lot of the season to go.

“It doesn’t matter what you do during the season, it all comes down to the final two games of the season,” Turnbull said.

A local derby with the other Mid Canterbury team in the competition awaited Hampstead next week, and their opposition – Hampstead/Collegians – would go into that game on a high after drawing with Geraldine 3-all in Ashburton on Saturday.

Hampstead/Collegians went into the match as underdogs against the third placed Geraldine side, but put in a muchimproved performance.

“They played really well.

“I think it’s the first time this season that they have really probably put a whole game together,” coach Karen McIntyre said.

Hampstead/Collegians’ goals came from Sian Gerard, Tayla Love and Hayley Dampney.
