Retired Ashburton retailer Tony Todd will join the line-up of candidates hoping to become Ashburton’s next mayor at October’s local body elections. Todd made his announcement yesterday and said that decision had come after long consideration and talking to many people in the community. The feedback he’d received over the past few months had been helpful in encouraging him to put his name forward, he said. “I’m taking the opportunity to declare my hand earlier and by declaring early I hope it may encourage others to put their name forward for council.” While he had been outspoken in leading delegations to council over several community issues, including inner town parking and the closure of the Ashburton i-SITE, Todd said he was
definitely not a one-track pony. There were many other issues he felt strongly about, he said. “I’ve had time to reflect and I still feel I have something to offer.” Although he has not served time as a councillor, 72-year-old Todd said his 30 years on the Ashburton Licensing Trust, with several of those as its chairman, had given him a good insight into how local governance worked. “I’m effectively a clean skin; I have not been party to any prior decisions, but I’ve obviously followed what’s been going on. “I don’t see it as a disadvantage not having been on council, but I know there are a lot of things I’ll need to come up to speed with.” With 54 years as a retailer, Todd said he’d learned how to deal with and listen to the public, qualities he believed were important in a mayor.
As an organisation, the council had a good team, led by chief executive Hamish Riach, he said. The mayor and the CEO need to have a good relationship and I believe I can do this because I’ve built relationships with trust CEOs over time.” He will not be covering his bases by also standing as a council candidate. “The democratic process will decide whether I get in or not. You put your hand up and it’s up to the community to have its say.” Todd will join councillor Leen Braam in the mayoral race. He declared his intention to stand in May. It is unclear, however, whether incumbent Donna Favel will be seeking a second term in the mayoral chair. After earlier saying she would be seeking another term, she is now saying she will decide whether or not to stand when nominations open on July 16.
