The Ashburton District Council has pulled out of a controversial deal to sell land in its business estate to a company that planned to bottle and sell water.

In a closed doors meeting late last week, councillors voted to can the deal, saying the buyer, NZ Pure Blue had failed to meet some conditions of the sale by the original deadline, June 30. Those conditions included a business plan detailing how it intended to run its water

bottling plant. Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay said the council had twice, in the past year, agreed to extend the due diligence timeframe for the potential purchaser.

“A further extension was requested until September 30 but before we granted that we wanted to know more about the specifics of the operation,” he said.

A key element in that assurance was that the council wanted confirmation the plant would be using bottles not water bladders. It also wanted a details of

its proposal for moving Ashburton’s inner town rail head to the business estate.

“The purchaser has not provided this information and it has given us enough cause for concern to cancel the Sale and Purchase Agreement. Information was to be supplied by the end of June and it wasn’t forthcoming. Councillors were united in this decision,” Mr McKay said.

New surface in pipeline

Allenton bowlers are gearing up for a $200,000 new playing surface.

Allenton Sports Club president David Hickman said the current woven surface was 14 years old and showing signs of deterioration so a new playing surface was being planned.

The club will apply for grants and run its own fundraisers to make up the cash needed for the job.

Mr Hickman said the replacement project would take about 18 months and bowlers were currently being consulted about which playing surface they preferred. Three suppliers had offered four options for the next all-weather surface – three woven carpets and one needle-punched.

The current artificial green is woven and was lifted and rotated in 2012; the base was also re-established.

“But we have got to the point where we need to renew and relay the carpet. The whole project will cost in the vicinity of $200,000.”

He said renewing the playing surface was a big project in the life of any club and only happened every 15-20 years.

“The current surface is playing as

well as it has every played but there is a lot of fibre coming off it and it is breaking down.”

The artificial green was originally laid in October 2002 and is used year round by the Allenton Bowling Club’s 80 members and outside players.

Even in winter, the club runs at least one organised competition a week, with casual roll-ups during the week also popular. Mr Hickman said the club would be consulting other clubs in Timaru and Christchurch about their surfaces and a sub-committee would make recommendations about the preferred surface.

“When the Allenton club put down the woven carpet back in 2002 they were quite brave, they were right at the beginning of this generation of surface. Needle-punched has been around a while and it really will come down to the preferences of the players. We have a sub-committee of experienced people and they will make a recommendation to the sports club.”

He said price would be an important consideration, as well as the reputation of the supplier.

The club will begin applying for major grants from funding organisations early next year.

Council pulls out of controversial Lot 9 water deal From P1 In a statement to the Guardian, NZ Pure Blue managing director Roydon Hartnett said the council had changed the rules around the deal. When he asked for an extension of time to finalise the deal the council had changed the rules and introduced several new condition, he said “One of these required NZ Pure Blue to provide the council with a ‘detailed proposal as to how the bottling as opposed to bladdering nature of the operation would be entrenched’. This condition would require NZ Pure Blue to provide the council with a full breakdown of our commercially sensitive business plan, something, due

to the previous breaches of confidentiality we have experienced with the council in this deal, we were not prepared to do,” Mr Hartnett said.

That in turn meant NZ Pure Blue was no longer an interested party as a potential buyer of Lot 9, he said. “As such the agreement has expired. Although disappointing, we wish the council well.”

While NZ Pure Blue is a New Zealand registered company there had been growing disquiet that it was a front for an overseas investment company or that the deal would involve overseas partners.

However, in the council’s dealings with the company, Mr McKay said he had not been made aware

in town, created jobs and helped with future growth and the council is always keen to look at opportunities for employment, new business and economic growth for the district. It’s difficult, but this was done as a straight commercial deal and we have to operate in a commercial manner and we have to weight up different options at any given time.”

He acknowledged there had been a perception the council was planning to sell water. This was not its intention. The consent to take water was attached to Lot 9 and this was part of the NZ Pure Blue deal, Mr McKay said.

“Yes, there was concern about the establishment of a water bot-

tling plant on Lot 9 but water bottling is a nationally approved activity happening around New Zealand.”

The council was keen to see more industry that would bring employment to the district, and would work with key stakeholders on any future decisions around water issues,” he said.

The consent on Lot 9 remains with the council but will not be actioned. This lot is one of several blocks of land for sale in the business estate. There were other parties interested in buying Lot 9 but in the interim it was off the market, he said.

“We will discuss its status specifically at a future date.”

Growing community opposition to the deal had not played a part in the council’s decision to pull out of the sale; it was purely a commercial transaction it was unable to complete. However, community concerns raised to the council through a petition and community delegation would not be ignored, they would be addressed through a report to the council’s July meeting, he said.

The decision to pull out of the deal was the right one, but on another level it was disappointing, Mr McKay said.

Athol shocked to take out title

Athol New has come from being a townie with a love of farm animals, to the FMG Young Farmer of the Year.

The 30-year-old Pendarves Young Farmer Club member and dairy business manager took out the title at the weekend, after commanding performances across all sections of the contest, held in Timaru.

“I was shocked. I never expected it,” Mr New said yesterday.

The quiz performance in particular had been a challenge.

“I buzzed in on three or four questions and got them all wrong, so that loses you points,” Mr New said.

While not gaining first place in any of the events, Mr New’s consistency saw him stay high in the field and ultimately take out first place.

Mr New hails from Northland, where he was brought up by his hard-working single-parent mum. They lived in the small country town of Waipu until he was about 12, then the city of Whangarei. She worked in shops and offices, but Mr New had plenty of friends out in the countryside on dairy farms, and developed a love of cows.

“I just like their nature, they are quite smart creatures, I love all animals to be fair,” he said.

At Kamo High School his agriculture teacher told him Lincoln University would be the place to fulfil his passion of a farming career, so that’s where he went.

Today Mr New is based at Dunsandel and works within the senior leadership team at Purata Farms, supplying Synlait, leading a team of over 10 staff.

Getting to the stage of becoming the FMG Young Farmer of the Year has been a long journey. He competed three times at district level, and twice at regional before making it to the nationals for the first time this year.

The last two-and-a-half months had been full-on, keeping up with work as well as training for the championships.

He never focused on winning, just achieving the best he could at each stage.

“Focusing on the process allowed me to stay calm and collected,” he said.

With the title and $80,000 of prizes under his belt, he and

wife Jane, who is due to have their first child in October, are now off for a five-day break on Waiheke Island.

NZ Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland said Mr New’s win and career path showed the exciting opportunities available in agriculture, while FMG’s chief operations officer Conrad Wilkshire said his success was inspirational.

“I think we should all be quite excited by what this guy will achieve for agriculture in New Zealand,” Mr Wilkshire said.

It was the second win in a row for Mid Canterbury, with last year’s champion, Matthew Bell, hailing from Hinds.

The Ashburton Society of Arts annual exhibition is now in full swing, attracting art lovers in their droves.

People from throughout Mid Canterbury and further afield, from as far as Geraldine to Christchurch, have been milling through the gallery’s doors, ever since the exhibition opened on July 4.

There are over 400 items, representing painting, photography, ceramics, silverware and sculpture - and they all are for sale.

About one 10th have already sold, and the remainder are the subject of intense interest as art lovers

search for that perfect piece.

Among those which remained unsold as of yesterday afternoon was the premier winner Rhonye McIlroy’s Discovery, Captain J. Cook, Poverty Bay, New Zealand, 8 October 1769. It represents one of the exhibition’s most expensive works, at $3850. Artworks range upwards from $25.

Gallery spokeswoman Simone Barnsdale said yesterday with it being the 52nd exhibition, it had become an annual tradition for many to visit.

“It’s really busy, it always is,” she said.

The exhibition runs until July 29.

Beach now for all Kiwis New Zealanders who rallied to raise funds to buy a beach achieved their goal yesterday.

Awaroa Beach became part of the Abel Tasman National Park after 40,000 Kiwis raised the money to buy it.

The beach was privately owned

by European families until it was

bought for the nation with $2.3 million donated through a Givealittle campaign last summer.

Yesterday it was handed over to the Department of Conservation.

A ceremony took place at the beach to celebrate the property becoming part of the Abel Tasman National Park.

Posters spread speed message

Nearly 100 Methven children have harnessed their creative skills to send an important safety message to the district.

Ninety-six students from Methven Primary School, Our Lady of the Snows School and Mount Hutt College spent two weeks creating posters to remind drivers to slow down to 20km/h when passing a stationary school bus.

The competition, which was run by the Methven Area Bus Committee, was created following concerns raised by Mount Hutt College Year 12 student and bus monitor Mia Birt about people not slowing down past buses.

Bus administrator Sally-Ann Kircher said three winning posters were chosen on Wednesday created by Our Lady of the Snows School’s Kiah Hungerford, Year 5, Methven Primary School student Caitlyn Stewart, Year 6, and Mount Hutt College Year 7 student Thornton Taylor.

These designs will be printed early next term and distributed throughout Mid Canterbury.

There were so many great entries that it was hard to decide a winner and many had very clever

False alarms Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade members attended two false alarms at the weekend. At about 4.30pm on Friday they responded to what was called in as a two-car crash north of the Rakaia bridge, however no crash was found.

About 11.15am on Saturday they responded to a suspected chimney fire, however, upon arrival they were able to establish the chimney was not on fire.

Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to a suspicious fire about 1.10pm on Saturday. The former Rural Transport building, tagged for demolition at the planned Countdown supermarket building site on South Street and State Highway One, had two small fires inside. New Zealand Fire Service fire safety officer Murray Cairns said passersby alerted emergency services when they saw smoke coming out windows, however the fires had self-extinguished by the time the brigade arrived. The service was treating the fire as suspicious and working with the Timaru CIB on the matter. A tree on fire early yesterday morning on McMurdo Street was also being treated as suspicious. The brigade also responded to a medical call, on Friday night.

Two of Ashburton’s future leaders have recently returned from a trip to the capital.

The Aspiring Leaders’ Forum brought together 170 young people from across New Zealand to meet last week.

The forum was established 11 years ago by a variety of leaders from business, political and community backgrounds to inspire and challenge youth about their approach to leadership.

Two Ashburton Youth Coun-

cillors, Madie Venmore-Kerr and Mel Haworth, made the trip up last Thursday morning.

Ms Venmore-Kerr, who has been on the youth council for two years, said it was lucky to have two people from the same area attend the forum.

“We flew up Thursday morning and it was kind of all go from there,” she said.

She said they were split up into groups of 10 and each given different parts of parliament to go to, where they met with MPs who spoke to them about parliament.

Ms Venmore-Kerr said while at parliament the group of 170 got to sit in on question time and listen to Bill English, who was a guest speaker.

She said it was interesting to see the MPs in person because hearing them speak about their families made them seem more human.

One of the highlights for Ms Venmore-Kerr was listening to keynote speaker Naomi Reece, who is a trust manager for the Aspiring Leaders’ Forum.

“It was one of the most emo-

tional speeches I have ever heard in my whole life,” she said.

Ms Venmore-Kerr joined the Ashburton Youth Council during her last year of school.

She said she was an RSA youth member and contacted the youth council to host their next event in the RSA building as a means to get more youth involved.

After attending a youth council meeting she found it interesting.

“It just so happened that they were looking for new members, so I chucked an application in and here I am,” she said.

Classic days in classic cars – 1957 Ford Fairlane Every week, The Guardian will be talking to Ashburton locals about the stories behind their classic, vintage, unique or interesting cars, in a series called Classic Days in Classic Cars. Greg Trudgeon first saw red six years ago.

It was in a Hinds shed he discovered a cherry coloured 1957 Ford Fairlane 500, in need of a little TLC. Eighteen months later, the car was in Invercargill at the 2011 AmeriCARna, with Greg at the wheel.

“I was going through a bit of a mid-life crisis and wanted to get a HarleyDavidson, but my wife didn’t really want me to get one.

“When I saw this, I told her ‘I’m not getting the Harley, I’m getting a car instead’,” he said, laughing at the memory.

Born and bred in Ashburton, Greg took over the family painting and decorating business from his father, Jim, in 1983.

In the Trudgeon Painting and Decorating workshop, Greg has built a garage to house the 5.1metre long car.

“A few mates and I remade the entire thing. It was in okay condition when I got it, it was complete but rusty. She needed a lot of work.”

Greg said the car has been repaired to its original state, with a couple of minor improvements.

“The red used to be much brighter but I made it a bit more burgundy and the exhaust pipe is stainless steel the whole way through, so it doesn’t rust.”

The interior of the car has all original parts from the Fairlane 500, which Greg sourced from a shop in the North Island.

The car, affectionately known as Big Bird, has been to car shows all across the South Island and has accidentally won a couple of awards.

“We pulled up at a car show, parked and went inside for breakfast and a couple of beers and when we came back out, she had won Best Car and People’s Choice,” Greg said.

Greg thinks the car travels about 5000 miles a year but said it is not a cheap feat.

“She passes a lot of things,” he said.

“The fuel station isn’t one of them.”

Big Bird uses a gallon of fuel for every 14 miles it travels.

The cost doesn’t matter to Greg, who said the fun was what it was all about.

“One time we were driving around with three of us in the front and four in the back,” he said “I’ve made a lot of really fun memories with my mates in her.

“Classic days in a classic car,” he said.

These days, Greg is working on a more sentimental project and said it would probably be the last car he fixed up.

“I’m doing up a Mark II Zodiac, which was the first car I ever owned,” he said.

“I really wanted to put a V8 engine in it back then but Dad said ‘You’re not putting a V8 in that car’.

“Well, Dad isn’t here, so I’m doing up the Zodiac and I’m putting a V8 in it,” he said.

Dairy vet wins local merit art award

Winner of the Ashburton Society of Arts Local Merit Award John Atchen said it is “always a buzz” when he gets recognition for his paintings.

Mr Atchen’s painting View With a Room won the award at the opening of the 52nd annual

Ashburton Society of Arts exhibition at the Ashburton Art Gallery on July 4.

“It’s great to know that your painting is accepted by the wider community,” he said.

Mr Atchen is a dairy veterinarian by trade but said painting has always been part of his family.

“It’s such a good hobby to have

and day to day it’s nice to have something to concentrate on and see the finished product.

“As a vet, you don’t always get to see something right through to the end. You don’t really see the animal back on the field, so it’s good for me to have something physical and tangible,” he said.

Both of Mr Atchen’s paintings are in the Ashburton Art Gallery and are for sale.

Is this really what America has come to?

uns don’t kill people, people kill people.

As far as sayings go, that would have to be one of the most inane ever to have been uttered.

Guns obviously do not get up of their own accord and go around shooting people; however, guns, in the hands of the wrong people, are deadly.

Nevertheless, this is no doubt a phrase trawled out many a time

by Americans, defending what they claim as their constitutional right to bear arms.

It’s amazing how belief in such a right works its way into the psyche of a nation, as seems to be the case in the country right now.

President Barack Obama’s efforts to turn around his country’s gun culture have largely been unsuccessful, and regularly we see innocent victims paying the price for this.

The most recent incident was a lone gunman taking to the Dallas police force following two more incidents of police officers shooting dead black people. The violence has woven itself into another narrative, that of racial tensions.

However, the fact is that what was supposed to have been a peaceful protest would not have turned deadly if it had not been for the killer having the means to set himself up as a powerful sniper.

Is this really what America, supposed to be the land of the free and the home of the brave, has come to? People arming themselves to defend themselves against, and attack, one another?

It’s a sad state for a proud nation to be reduced to, and one that future leaders will need to address. It’s difficult to see how, when it remains a political issue, but some radical action needs to be taken to completely turn around the country’s pathological relationship it has with guns.

Sharemilking – a great Kiwi innovation Sharemilking is unique to New Zealand, has served our industry well and allowed progression.

It has also provided the dairy sector access to innovative and fresh thinking.

When other dairy industries around the world complain they struggle to attract the next generation, sharemilking here has provided the means for succession in our industry.

The current climate has seen a number of sharemilkers leave.

It’s not because they are poor farmers. Many are very good farmers, but timing has not been in their favour.

While there is the adage that one person’s loss is another’s opportunity, we don’t want a situation where we lose too many of the next generation.

We need to ensure our sharemilking system is robust enough to handle the volatility we are experiencing right now.

There needs to be flexibility to ensure that during the poor times the hardship is evenly balanced, and during good times the gain is also balanced appropriately.

There’s been plenty of talk about system change on our farms. Much of that is about going back to all grass. But is the message the likes of DairyNZ is giving out, the same as what farmers are hearing?

I think there might be a little bit lost in translation, does maximising your pasture usage mean “all grass”?

The other changes we might need to be considering are debt levels. When compared to other countries reliant on agriculture, we have very high debt.

There are several factors for that, in many cases farmers in those countries haven’t been able to expand because of regulations, thus they haven’t needed to borrow.

Or they have had volatility from other factors, such as weather in Australia, which means they have a mind-set around managing that and so carry less debt.

Whether it’s a conscious decision or an in-built setting that no one has considered and just occurs, I can’t tell you. But the facts are they have less debt.

We have been able to handle higher debt levels, simply because returns have been good with the weather generally temperate. It allows us to take more risk in other parts of our business.

Is this current downturn just a blip, or are we entering a new period? Things might look slightly different than the last decade and our risk profile might be a tad different too. Perhaps, we

need to re-evaluate what a smart level of debt actually is.

On the theme of tough times, it is interesting to read the comments of the dairy market experts and their predictions of doom and gloom and how we will be so much better off, if we just follow their brilliant advice.

Apparently some people think we are all going to be out of business in five to 10 years time as everyone will be drinking synthetic milk.

If that’s the case, why all the stressing over our impact on the environment?

Another point I hear mentioned is that we need to all go organic; otherwise we are all idiots for not doing it because we would be so much better off.

Now if farmers wish to go organic then that is their choice, certainly there are good market pricing signals at the moment that show demand for organics is higher than supply.

Undoubtedly we will see an increase in supply from farmers to meet that demand, but as we know all too well, for any given demand, an increase in supply will mean a drop in price.

So, will the current margin between conventional and organic continue? It all but evaporated during the global financial crisis in 2008 and a number of organic farmers left the industry.

Also worth considering is how much of that demand for organic is based on the fact that organic produce is viewed as coming

from family farmers, who care about the environment, treat their cows and feed pasture well.

Quite a lot I would imagine.

Now tell me I haven’t just described virtually every farmer in New Zealand? More than any other country in the world we need to cash in on this truth.

We have seen European co-ops trying to take advantage of ‘grass fed labelling’ and now they and other companies are considering differentiating themselves further with talk of “GMO free” labels. This is how it should be – let the market decide. But, just because one company wishes to use a GMO-free label doesn’t mean the entire country needs to go that way.

Federated Farmers has fought for farmer and consumer choice.

We think we can have both.

Diversity builds strength.

While some have pushed for New Zealand to be GMO free, won’t companies and farmers implement their own audit systems if the premium is worth it?

National GM freedom may reduce the costs for those players who wish to remain GM free but would impose an opportunity cost on those for whom GM is an advantage.

If the premium isn’t worth the cost of implementation and auditing, is it really a premium we should be chasing. Are we adding value or adding cost?

Protests block roads Protests against the shootings of two black men by police officers shut down main arteries in a number of US cities, leading to numerous arrests, but remained mostly peaceful.

Undeterred by heightened concerns about safety at protests yesterday after a lone gunman killed five police officers in Dallas on Friday night, organisers went ahead with marches in New York and Washington DC among other cities.

It was the third straight day of widespread protests after the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling, 37, by police in Baton Rouge on Tuesday and the death of Philando Castile, 32, on Wednesday night in a St Paul, Minnesota suburb.

The most recent shooting deaths by police come after several years of contentious killings by law enforcement officers, including that of Michael Brown, a teenager whose death in the summer of 2014 caused riots and weeks of protests in the St Louis suburb of Ferguson.

Early yesterday, hundreds of protesters shut down I-94, a major thoroughfare linking Minneapolis and St Paul, snarling traffic for about two hours.

Despite warnings to disperse, St Paul police said protesters threw objects, injuring one officer. The police then began making arrests and used smoke bombs to scatter the crowd.

A march in Baton Rouge saw scuffles between riot police and Black Panther activists, several of whom carried shotguns, as Louisiana law allows for weapons to be carried openly. A police spokesman said

“I’m feeling very haunted, very sad,” said Lorena Ambrosio, 27, a Peruvian American and freelance artist, “and just angry that black bodies just keep piling and piling up.”

New York police said separately they arrested about a dozen protesters for shutting down a major city highway.

Man dies, two gored in Spanish bull runs A Spaniard has died and two other men, including a Japanese, have been gored in bull-runs in Spain, as the San Fermin festival in the northern town of Pamplona entered its third day.

The 28-year-old died after a bull’s horn pierced his lung and heart during a run in the southeastern village of Pedreguer near Valencia, a spokesman for the regional government said yesterday.

The bull caught him as he was trying to help another runner in the annual event, in which a man also died last year.

Over the past century 15 people have died in Pamplona’s event, which dates back hundreds of years, according to a count on the unofficial San Fermin website. The last death was recorded in 2009.

Harry Potter’s a must for teens in London

The Warner Bros Studio Tour – The Making of Harry Potter was an essential must-see.

E

very summer, our family holidays somewhere different. We’ve done theme parks, a classic road trip and the Caribbean. This year, with our son hitting his teens, we went international with 10 days in London.

The planning was a team effort: My wife was in charge of the budget and activities schedule.

I was in charge of airfare and hotel. Our son played consultant, voting yes or no.

We saved $US1000 on airfares by taking connecting flights rather than flying direct. Then, using Booking.com, we spent hours researching hotels. The map icon interface was great: Pick a neighbourhood, zoom in, click on the hotel. We wanted a Tube station within walking distance, but saved money by picking a one-bedroom with pullout couch over a two-room suite.

With flights and lodging booked, we moved on to the itinerary. Our son had two mustsees: the Imperial War Museum and Harry Potter studio tour.

We bought advance tickets for Potter, two theatre shows, a bike tour, the London Eye, several walking tours and a hop-on,

So how did it all work out?

Our flights involved a series of unfortunate events, including plane trouble in Chicago, lost luggage on the way home and overhead drop-down screens on our trans-Atlantic leg instead of individual entertainment screens. We had to keep reminding ourselves, “but we saved $US1000!” An expensive cab ride from airport to hotel marred our arrival in London. Next time we’ll take the train from the airport.

But our hotel, Citadines South Kensington, did not disappoint. The location was ideal, four blocks from the Gloucester Road Tube station, with plenty of restaurants nearby. An Italian eatery, Da Mario, became a favourite. We even knew somebody dining there our first night – the airport cabbie who’d charged a fortune.

We took the double-decker sightseeing bus on our first

morning as a no-stress introduction to the city. Our bus passes included the Tower of London tour and a Thames River cruise.

Big Ben, Parliament, 10 Downing Street and Westminster Abbey were a few minutes’ walk apart.

Cross the river and we were at the London Eye, getting a bird’seye view of all we’d just seen.

With a teen who grew up reading Harry Potter, the Warner Bros Studio Tour – The Making of Harry Potter was essential. We saw props, costumes and sets, including Platform nine and three-quarters, the Night Bus, Harry’s cubbyhole at Number 4 Privet Drive and a miniature Hogwarts campus.

You can get filmed riding your very own Nimbus 2000, or pile the family into the Weasley invisible car for a group photo. At the massive gift shop you can easily drop a few hundred quid. But skip the butter beer at the food court – oh, it’s horrible.

For a real-life adventure, try biking through London. Besides

navigating throngs of wandering tourists, we dodged buses, cabs, motorcycles and delivery lorries while trying not to lose our guide, who biked ahead of the straggling group on our threehour tour. The only leisurely part was a pedal through St James’ Park, Green Park and Hyde Park.

We hadn’t planned a first-hand look at the UK National Health Service, but I added to the bike adventure with an ambulance ride after hitting the pavement head-first and suffering a concussion. Our son was enthralled by the history lesson at the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital on Westminster Bridge: Florence Nightingale set up a nursing school there, and it was bombed by the Germans during World War Two. So the emergency room visit was not a total loss.

Fortunately our other travels were mostly by Tube, using the convenient London Underground Oyster Cards. After two days, we delegated figuring out routes and platforms to our son.

We also did several walking tours: one on Dr Who locations; a Jack the Ripper tour at dusk – not for the squeamish – in the modern-day Whitechapel neighbourhood; and a Beatles tour with a stop at Abbey Road.

Kids who know the Beatles might like it. If not, be prepared for eye rolls.

Our son calls us the “history geek” family, so we enjoyed our day at the Imperial War Museum.

And since no London trip would be complete without a little royal pomp, we watched the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

We also enjoyed London at night, walking around Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square and the West End theatre district, where we took in The Audience and The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Night-Time.

All in all, we loved our trip. Involving our son in planning and research was key, and can be an effective way to engage teenagers who might otherwise never look up from their screens.

One additional word to the wise: If you go biking in London - or anywhere else – wear a helmet.

Hayden back on track

By Andrew Alderson The New Zealand track cycling team selection process for the Rio Olympics has been likened to television show Survivor, and the biggest winners have been a veteran pursuiter and a developing sprinter.

Cycling New Zealand have recalled 35-year-old Ashburtonian Hayden Roulston to their team pursuit and opted for 20-yearold Zac Williams as the team sprint reserve.

“That was mentioned, funnily enough,” Roulston said in reference to the long-running American TV franchise whose apt catchphrase is “outwit, outlast, outplay”.

“I haven’t enjoyed this process as much as I did in 2008 when our group of six all knew we were going to the Games. We’re a tight group of guys with little separating us.

“It’s been really good up until the last couple of weeks.

“We haven’t stopped supporting each other in training, but there was definitely anxiousness at night, talking about what might happen.

It’s not the nicest time knowing two would miss out.”

“I can’t say enough about Hayden’s efforts,” said head coach Dayle Cheatley.

“He gave up a career on the road to realise his dream of completing his career back on the track.

“After eight years away, the sport had moved on and he has worked tirelessly on the bike and been an invaluable leader off it.”

The double medallist from Beijing will attend his third Olympics.

He takes one of five places in the team pursuit and omnium ranks and is joined by Dylan Kennett, Piet Bulling and Regan Gough, who will make their Games debuts.

Aaron Gate, a bronze medallist in the team pursuit at London, completes the quintet.

Williams shaded Matt Archibald and London keirin bronze medallist Simon van Velthooven in the sprinting ranks.

Williams’ selection comes as a shock but Cheatley endorsed his talent.

“We have invested significantly in the team sprint and felt it prudent to ensure we have cover.

Zac has continued to make significant gains.

“He’s been in the elite squads and is not heard of much because the main three sprinters [Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins] get the limelight.

“He’s been doing some strong

rides across the Olympic nomination period, including a fourth in the keirin at a World Cup which indicate he can be worldclass.”

The upshot of selecting nine male track riders is that George Bennett is the solitary road cyclist. Commonwealth Games medallist Jack Bauer missed out.

“Jack is an outstanding rider and served us well at London and Glasgow but due to a number of significant injuries and crashes over the last 18 months, we were unable to put his name forward,” performance director Mark Elliott said.

“Ultimately we have to make a decision on which team can win the most medals.

“That’s why we’ve decided to transfer a [men’s] road spot to the sprint team so they had cover to carry on their world championship-winning form.

“The key thing for us is to progress from bronzes to silvers and golds.”

The women’s selections were simpler, with individual time trial world champion Linda Villumsen the main hope for a medal.

Olivia Podmore, a junior world championship medallist, has been added to form a team sprint combination with Natasha Hansen.

The team will continue preparations in Europe before converging on Bordeaux to complete their build-up next week.- NZME

Froome fires up the turbo

By Julien Pretot Briton Chris Froome stunned his rivals to snatch the overall leader’s yellow jersey in the Tour de France when he won the eighth stage with a lightning attack on the final descent yesterday.

Orica-BikeExchange’s Adam Yates, who led for much of the stage, remains in second spot in the general classification, 16 seconds behind Froome, after showing no affects from Friday’s crash that saw him require stitches to his chin after an inflatable arch deflated and brought down his bike.

Australia’s Richie Porte finished 10th on the stage and rose to 18th spot overall but more significantly closed the gap on Froome to 2min 8sec.

“Froome just got the gap and (Nairo) Quintana didn’t want to chase,” Porte said on his team BMC website.

“Tejay (van Garderen) and I were told on the radio to pull together and try and bring Froome back as much as we could.

“But even by that stage he was out of sight and out of mind. It’s a shame we didn’t finish on the top, that would have been a little more interesting, but it was a good day.”

Team Sky rider Froome sped away from a group of overall favourites at the top of the last of four gruelling climbs in the Pyrenees and never looked back.

The defending champion, who is chasing a third Tour title, finished 13 seconds ahead of Ireland’s Dan Martin (Etixx-Quick Step) and Spaniard Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha).

Last year’s runner-up Nairo Quintana (Movistar), who failed to attack on a searing hot day, was in the group featuring Martin and Rodriguez.

Double champion Alberto Contador is now 3min 12sec off the pace after being dropped near the top of the Col de Peyresourde, the last ascent of the 184-km stage.

“It was a bit of fun. I thought I would give it (attacking downhill) a try.

“That was real old-school bike racing,” said Froome.

Southern dictates Senior B

Southern continue to lead the way with Mt Somers in hot pursuit in the Centennial Mug Senior B competition, with both sides taking convincing wins on Saturday.

Southern made light work of

Rakaia for a 43-10 victory at the Rakaia Domain.

It was the reigning champion’s fifth win in the Centennial Mug competition in six outings.

Southern’s only blemish on a near-perfect record was a narrow round four loss to Mt Somers, who kept up the chase with a 36-

12 humbling of Allenton in their clash on Saturday. The win keeps Hayden Reveley’s side within two points of Southern.

Collegiate provided the weekend’s upset with a 22-5 win over Celtic.

Heading into the tie Celtic were third on the ladder, but Col-

legiate’s bonus point win will put them in good stead for when they face Mt Somers next week.

Meanwhile Hampstead were also in solid form to post their fourth win.

The blue and yellows played host to Methven and scored five tries to secure a 31-12 victory.

Crusaders run rings around the Rebels

By GreGor Paul The Crusaders will be feeling good about life again. There’s nothing quite like handing out a proper thumping (85-26) to warm the cockles.

And this was a proper, serious thumping.

By halftime, everyone was searching the record books as it looked like the Crusaders could crack 100 points.

It was a great night for the Crusaders in terms of building

their confidence, allowing them to run a few fringe members of their squad and to put the hurt of last week’s loss in Fiji behind them.

There was plenty to admire about their offloading and support running.

Their work at the turnover was outstanding, too, and their basic pass and catch was superb.

Nearly all the half chances they created, they scored – only slowing up in the final quarter when they had the entire bench on.

But as running rugby goes, this was up there.

Once they were in space, they mostly stayed calm and made good decisions.

And then there was their scrum – or at least their scrum when Owen Franks was on for the first half hour. It was lethal, so much so that if Franks hadn’t come off as a precaution with a stiff back, there would have been genuine safety fears.

But maybe not such a great night for rugby.

There were periods – actually almost the whole game – where it was hard not to wonder whether the Crusaders would have had more of a game had they hauled a local club side in for the night.

The gulf in class in the first three games was shocking, the New Zealand teams were faster, fitter, more skilful, more aware and just far too good.

It was yet more evidence to say expansion just hasn’t worked for Super Rugby.

As Kiwi rugby fans we should be in celebration mode, we should be sitting back with pride now that four New Zealand sides have locked in playoff spots for this year’s Super Rugby competition.

Yet, we aren’t.

Sure, we can all take joy out of watching New Zealand sides pummelling our Australian neighbours, but is that what we really want and is that what this competition has now become?

Based on points alone, four of the five New Zealand-based Super Rugby teams should occupy the top five spots of the Super Rugby standings.

Yet the Crusaders, Highlanders and Hurricanes sit at fifth, sixth and seventh respectively, meaning they won’t get a home quarter-final.

Meanwhile, the Brumbies sit in fourth and will host a playoff match, even though they sit 11 points behind the Crusaders.

It’s the new Super Rugby structure that has quickly became a farce, and after this weekend, when the New Zealand teams outscored their opposition 23771, it shows something needs to change.

New Zealand Rugby Union chief executive Steve Tew said that the playoff format, from a rugby point of view, just didn’t feel right.

“Frankly, it’s just not fair.”

Some argue that the Lions have proved their worth out of South Africa by topping the standings with a round to go, but there is a simple explanation for that.

The Sharks, Jaguares and Kings, all of whom belong to the same conference as the Lions, have just 13 combined wins in a total of 42 games. An easy conference to win games in, and an easy conference to top.

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder also said it was confusing for his players, and he was one of the first to stand up and raise concerns when the new format was announced.

“Even the Stormers, they haven’t had to face a New Zealand team and it looks like they will be hosting a quarter-final,” said Blackadder.

Australian coach Michael Cheika agrees despite his local sides losing all four games against New Zealand teams this weekend.

Super Rugby has just one more round left before the playoffs, and if the quarter-finals play out as plans, we could still see three New Zealand team’s in the semifinals.

Southern send a message

Southern sent a loud and clear message to their Watters Cup rivals and remain the competition’s only unbeaten team after seeing off Rakaia 42-34 on Saturday.

Both teams held 100 per cent records heading into the clash at the Rakaia Domain, and the result may be pivotal to who books an automatic place in the final come July 30.

Rakaia drew first blood in the opening five minutes through wing Seta Koroitamana before Andrew Letham slotted his conversion, but Southern were quick to return fire.

First five Richard Fridd touched down under the posts and converted to level proceedings after seven minutes.

Michael Ellis’ side were at it again moments later as Rakaia struggled to contain Southern’s forward pack.

Lock Scott Martin soon bundled over to give the visitors the lead, but Fridd was off target with his conversion.

With six points awarded for tries and two points for all kicks under the new scoring system, Southern were up 14-8 with 15 minutes on the clock.

Undeterred, Rakaia came straight back to score their second try within five minutes of Southern’s last.

After plenty of phases loose-

Rakaia continued where they left off after the kickoff but Southern’s defence stood firm for prolonged spells of pressure.

Against the run of play it was Southern that took the lead again in the 25th minute.

Following some-quick fire passing and support running, Jon Dampney emerged unchallenged to cross over for his side’s third try in what was becoming an end-to-end battle.

With time ebbing away after an intense first 40 minutes, Southern struck a damaging blow as wing Ollie Sapsford dived over

the white line to increase the deficit to 14 points.

Fridd failed to convert with the last kick of the half, but Southern headed to the sheds in a commanding position.

Fridd was on target early in the second half though, with a penalty underneath the posts to add two more to Southern’s tally.

But Rakaia hit back minutes later with an unconverted try of their own from hooker Jackson Donlan to bring the score to 3020.

With 20 minutes to play, Southern won the lineout after kicking their penalty to touch and drove over the line for another six pointer.

Rakaia followed the fixture’s script and reacted as you would expect from defending champions to score their fourth try of the encounter two minutes later, and Letham kicked his conversion to bring the home side within eight.

The scoring didn’t end there, though.

Sensing a weakness, Fridd kicked another penalty to touch.

From the lineout Southern drove across yet again, with Dampney touching down this time for his second try of the afternoon.

To Rakaia’s credit, they continued to battle and were rewarded with another unconverted try at the death from Donlan, but it proved too little too late as Southern took the spoils.

Methven does best in dead rubber Hampstead’s season came to a disappointing end in a 48-28 loss to Methven in their final Watters Cup outing of the season ahead of next week’s bye.

Methven started the match well, and after 10 minutes a charge down allowed flanker Sam Brown to score under the posts.

Hampstead soon hit back,

though, with Mariota Samoa gathering a Methven cross kick and beating two defenders on his way to a 60 metre try.

Hampstead then scored two quick tries from Danny Irvine and Nigel Thompson for a 22-10 lead at the halftime.

Injuries to the Methven midfield pairing of Tyler Blackburn and Ryan Ashworth meant that

the subs bench had to be emptied earlier than planned.

Richard Catherwood, in his first game back for the black and whites since the combined competition semi-final against BDI in June, moved to fullback and club stalwart John Fulton entered the fray in his 20th season since debuting in 1997.

The 41-year-old slotted into

Aussies shut out Only one Australian team can make the Super Rugby finals after the Highlanders secured their spot in the playoffs with a 34-8 win over the Jaguares in Buenos Aires. The four-tries-to-one, bonus-point victory meant New Zealand sides have clinched all three of the wildcard spots and four of the five playoff places available to Australasian group teams. Only the winner of the Australian conference can make it through to the playoffs, with the Brumbies and NSW Waratahs level on points heading into next weekend’s final round.

Hampstead pile on the goals

Ko set to take third major title

t was a mixed set of results for Mid Canterbury’s division one hockey teams on Saturday with Hampstead, Hampstead-Collegians and Wakanui Black in action.

Women’s Mid-South Canterbury division one front runners Hampstead’s exceptional form continued with a decisive 5-0 hiding of Cambridge at the Ashburton Hockey Turf.

Cambridge sit in second place on the ladder, but a whopping 17 points behind Hampstead.

Hampstead led 3-0 at half time before scoring twice more in the second stanza.

Nikita Moore, Sara Harrison, Helen France and Annabel Askin (2) all found the net, but it was a solid team display throughout with Kerry Chapman impressing in goal while Jessica Yeatman turned in a fine game in defence.

Meanwhile, HampsteadCollegians had a 2-0 win over Geraldine in what coach Karen McIntyre deemed a solid team effort.

In contrast, Wakanui Black will hope to forget their senior men’s division one clash with Tainui.

It may have been a replay of last year’s final, but the result was very different as the Oamaru side took a 6-0 win in a dominate display in Timaru.

Tall Blacks out The Tall Blacks’ Olympic dream is over.

Requiring two more victories to book a spot amongst the world heavyweights at Rio, the Tall Blacks were edged 78-72 by Canada in their Olympic qualifying semi-final yesterday.

As usual, it was a dogged display from the undersized New Zealanders, but a key injury to Isaac Fotu mixed with Canadian class saw them lose pace with the NBA-laden Canucks in the final minute of the clash.

In reality, securing the sole Olympic spot was always going to be a difficult proposition.

The Tall Blacks were installed as $81 outsiders to qualify, and acquitted themselves well by beating the Philippines and frightening the fifth-ranked French in pool play.

They needed a performance of similar quality against Canada, and received another classy display from the Webster brothers Tai and Corey who have come away from the tournament with their reputations enhanced.

When Lydia Ko first came to a US Women’s Open four years ago, her hands were shaking so much out of nerves.

Now with two major titles under her belt by age 19, Ko is able to keep those emotions under control and project a picture of calmness on the golf course.

Ko birdied the 18th hole to cap a 2-under 70 in the third round that put her in the lead at the US Women’s Open, bolstering her chance for her third major title in less than a year.

“I think nerves are good because it means you’re excited,” Ko said.

“You’re ready. It means a lot to you.

“A little bit of nerves is always good.

“It can end up being a little bit of adrenaline.”

Whatever Ko is doing is working.

She became the youngest woman to win a major last year at the Evian Championship and followed that up by winning the ANA Inspiration this spring.

Now she’s in contention for her first US Open title after failing to make the top 10 in her first four appearances.

Ko has a one-shot lead over 2009 winner Eun Hee Ji and Sung Hyun Park.

Brittany Lang and Amy Yang are two shots back at 5 under, and Angela Stanford is in sixth place at 4 under at CordeValle.

“I’m going to just try and enjoy it, just focus on the shot I have in front of me and not think about what everybody else is doing,” Ko said.

“If I think that way, I won’t get too carried away with what position I am at certain parts of the final day.”

Ko’s week at the Open got off to a somewhat shaky start when she was tied for 52nd after a 73 in the first round in the difficult afternoon conditions.

But Ko got into contention with a 66 in the second round and then took sole possession of the lead on the final hole Saturday.

Her approach shot spun back about 9 feet from the hole.

She calmly sank the putt and then threw her ball into the stands in celebration.

Ko is tied for the fewest putts through three rounds.

She made two other long birdies yesterday, a 25-foot downhill putt on No. 3 and a long left-toright swinging putt on No. 13 that she initially thought she had over-read.

“That’s what I was doing the majority of the day,” she said.

“I said, ‘Oh, man.’

“And then I was kind of walking a little bit and then I saw the ball drop.

“So it kind of took me by surprise.

“So it was a lucky one.”

Mid Canterbury Women’s A came from behind to secure a point in a 1-all draw against Western AFC Rebels at the Ashburton Domain yesterday.

Mid Canterbury created plen-

ty of chances and dominated possession in the first half but failed to find the net.

After a goalless first half, Western broke the deadlock through Maggie McKinnon against the run of play to secure a 1-0 lead, but the Mid Canterbury girls

continued to pile on their attack.

The home side’s efforts eventually paid off as Georgina Helmsley levelled proceedings.

Mid Canterbury had the better of play in the later stages of the tie but Western held out for a 1-1 stalemate.

Meanwhile, Mid Canterbury Women’s B also showed plenty of character to take a meritorious 3-1 victory after trailing 1-0 at halftime against Waimak Red in yesterday morning’s other fixture played at the Ashburton Domain.

MC United’s promotion dreams dashed

Mid Canterbury United have missed out on promotion to the senior men’s first division on goal difference following a thrilling final day of the league season.

United took a convincing 3-0 win over FC Twenty Bombers at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday with goals from centre back John Moses and a brace from attacking midfielder Greg Feutz.

But it wasn’t enough to steal top spot from Coastal Spirit, who came from behind for a 2-2 draw

with third placed Halswell United.

Mid Canterbury and Spirit both finished on 29 points from their 14 matches, but Spirit’s superior goal difference was enough to take the Robbies men’s division two title.

The teams will now break off into two pools for the knockout cup competition.

Mid Canterbury United Masters dealt Cashmere Avengers a 5-0 thumping at Garrick Memorial Park in Christchurch on Saturday.

United were dominant throughout against a Cashmere side that have won just three times in their last 14 outings.

Stu Wiseman opened the scoring after latching on to a cross from 12 yards.

United’s lead then doubled in an almost mirror image scenario of the first goal as Wiseman hit the woodwork before Matt Galbraith netted the rebound to make it 2-0.

Mid Canterbury continued to control the pace early in the second half before Maikel Vallejo scored the goal of the game with a curled effort from the edge of the 18-yard box.

To Cashmere’s credit, they continued to attack Mid Canterbury,

Serena Williams has no plans on slowing down in her relentless pursuit of Margaret Smith Court’s all-time record grand slam tally.

Confessing only to being able to sleep easier after finally matching Steffi Graf’s open-era benchmark 22 majors with a seventh Wimbledon crown, the insatiable American said she still hoped to rack up titles for years time to come. “It doesn’t get boring. As long as I’m winning, it doesn’t get boring,” the 34-year-old said as she celebrated her watershed 7-5 6-3 win over Angelique Kerber in Saturday’s quality singles final.

Roger Federer hopes to grace tennis’s most famous court again but is making no promises after suffering a worrying knee injury in a devastating Wimbledon semifinal loss to Milos Raonic. McKay doubles his luck With the locals dominating proceedings at Ruakaka on Saturday it was left to Matamata trainer Peter McKay to strike a blow for the visitors as he produced a winning double on the day.

Promising two-year-old Barcelo opened his winning account with a comfortable display over 1000 metres however it was three-year-old filly Lucky’s Revenge who created the biggest impression with an effortless victory over 1200 metres later in the day.

the daughter of six race winner Santangelo dealt to a handy lineup of intermediate sprinters as she held out the late charge of Hunapo to record her third win from just six raceday appearances.

McKay admitted he was keen on the filly’s chances leading into the contest despite a four month absence from the track.

“I’ve always had an opinion of this filly but we’ve tried to be patient with her as she is only going to get better as she gets older,” he noted.

“She put together two nice wins before we decided to take a shot at

black type with her at Ellerslie but she just wasn’t herself that day.

“Some of my horses picked up a virus around that time and she was very listless for a week or so after the run so I’m sure she was one who was affected by it.

“We tipped her into the paddock and she had a good break which did her the world of good and she has made good progress since she has been back in work.

“It’s always tough taking on the older horses but I thought she would be hard to roll with the right run and that’s how it panned out.”

BREACHES OF THE NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARD FOR AIR QUALITY

The National Environmental Standard for Air Quality (NESAQ) threshold for PM10 (particles smaller than 10 micrometers in diameter) has been breached more than once in the Ashburton airshed.

In the Ashburton airshed, the NESAQ allows the PM10 threshold of 50 µg/m3 (24-hour average concentration, reported from midnight to midnight) to be exceeded no more than three times a year from September 2016 and only once from September 2020. There is no limit on permitted exceedances until September 2016.

From 1 January to 30 June 2016, there have been two exceedances of the PM10 threshold in Ashburton, one in March and one in June.

Rousey on the way back It’s been a week full of surprises in Las Vegas but has the UFC got one more planned for today? The rumour mill started to turn its wheels at the UFC 200 weigh-in yesterday after a promotional video hyping the headline bout between women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate and Amanda Nunes was screened.

“Miesha Tate is the most dangerous female fighter in the world,” declared UFC boss Dana White in the short clip. “Other than Ronda Rousey.”

Lesnar outclasses Hunt Brock Lesnar didn’t let a fourand-a-half year layoff bother him as he ground Mark Hunt down to claim a dominant unanimous decision victory in the co-main event of UFC 200 yesterday.

Lesnar (6-3), a former UFC heavyweight champion who has flirted with the NFL but has made his name in the WWE, came out of retirement for the bout with Hunt.

The giant cross-code athlete, known for his hulking physique and freakish power, lent on his wrestling-heavy approach for which Hunt had few answers.

Lesnar claimed round one with some dominant wrestling and ground strikes and although Hunt kept the bout standing in the second, as he landed a couple of strong shots, he couldn’t drop the beast.

The third frame was Lesnar at his best as he wore Hunt (12-111) down and threw a bunch of vicious strikes as he earned a 10-8 score from all three judges who

scored the bout 29-27 to Lesnar.

Questions then flowed to Lesnar about what he would do in the future but he had no firm plans, other than to return to his WWE commitments.

“Let’s get one thing clear: Brock Lesnar does what Brock Lesnar wants to do,” he said in his own post-fight press conference, sporting a welt under his left eye.

“It’s way too soon to discuss my fighting future. I have no idea.”

Lesnar, who turns 39 on Tuesday, was the headline act of UFC 100 in 2009 and could fight again in the octagon given his competitive nature.

“There were a lot of nerves but you’ve got to keep an open mind,” Lesnar said.

“This is a mental game.”

As for Hunt, it was a blow to his momentum following two first-round knockout wins over Bigfoot Silva (19-9-1) and Frank Mir (18-11).

gear and that was it,” Hunt said.

The 42-year-old recently signed a new six-fight deal with the UFC and he has been vocal about his desire to earn a title shot.

But the way Lesnar was able to bully him with his wrestling won’t have won him many plaudits from the matchmakers.

Hunt’s popularity Down Under and in Japan will mean he is always a drawcard to headline an event but a title fight may prove hard to come by.

In the main event, Brazil’s Amanda Nunes claimed the women’s bantamweight title from Miesha Tate with a first-round submission that was part neck crank, part rear naked choke.

Nunes, who improved to 13-4 with the win, poured it on early in the bout and rocked Tate with a handful of swift punches and Tate had no answer.

Tate (18-6) scored on one takedown but fired few other shots.

She cut a disappointed figure after the bout.

The original main event was

meant to be a meeting between Daniel Cormier (18-1) and Jon Jones (22-1) in a light heavyweight title unification bout.

But Jones was popped for a suspected failed drugs test this week, which took him off the card, so former middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva stepped in on late notice to meet Cormier in a light heavyweight, nontitle fight.

Cormier, as predicted, ground Silva (33-8, 1 NC) in to the mat with his wrestling as he earned a unanimous decision victory in a fight that dropped down the billing on the main card.

In the other main card bouts, Jose Aldo (26-2) won the interim featherweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Frankie Edgar (20-5-1). Irishman Conor McGregor (19-3) holds the belt proper and will likely meet Aldo in the future.
