Mid Canterbury principals say it would be naïve to think child neglect was not a problem in Ashburton. Their comments follow on from two cases of child neglect being identified in Christchurch early last week when two children were found by a former caregiver to be underweight with severe headlice and boils. Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Chris Murphy said while people would like to think child neglect was not a problem, it was. “Mid Canterbury is no different from any other district or community from
around New Zealand,” Mr Murphy said. “Families are facing the same pressures and strains as families throughout New Zealand.” However, dealing with child neglect was difficult. Mr Murphy said it appeared Child Youth and Family (CYF) was a scarce resource and this was a cause for concern among some local principals. “I think the principals of Mid Canterbury occasionally see themselves at odds with CYF in what we believe would be a trigger point for intervention,” he said. Mt Somers Springburn principal Brent Gray agreed, saying dealing with CYF was not always easy.
Mr Gray said he believed the child welfare sector was one of the most under resourced sectors in the country. “It is an incredible source of frustration among principals that when referrals do get made we don’t see a lot of action very quickly, or we are not informed of the outcomes that well,” Mr Gray said. “It’s that old adage, you are sort of damned if you do and damned if you don’t because you are going to annoy someone and you’ve basically got to do it for the wellbeing of the child,” he said.
