A controversial billboard which had drawn wide criticism from the public has been mysteriously removed, much to the surprise of the organisation who had it installed.

last week, but upon inspection yesterday it was no longer there.

And Greenpeace, the organisation behind the sign, knew nothing about its removal. The billboard took a direct shot at two rural-based businesses with strong footprints in Mid Canterbury and pointed a finger at them as a main reason behind the pollution levels in our rivers.

The sign was succinct in its message stating simply that both Ravensdown and Ballance pollute rivers through their

products and services and it also carries the hashtag #toomanycows.

A Greenpeace spokesperson said last night that they had no knowledge of the advertising being removed and that they would be making contact with the billboard company to have it put back in place – as soon as possible.

College celebrates visit from German dignitary

Ashburton College’s strong connection with Germany and the German language was celebrated yesterday with a visit from a German dignitary.

Deputy ambassador Dr Timo Bauer-Savage visited the College to take part in a special assembly to celebrate student achievements for the year, and the service of long-standing German teacher Ken Pow. Bauer-Savage spoke to the students, who had gathered in the school’s auditorium, about how helpful learning a foreign language could be, and the opportunities it can present.

The deputy-ambassador was in town as part of road-trip around the South Island.

“We decided we spend too much time in our office and we are very happy we can be here to celebrate with you,” he said.

German culture and education worldwide, took the time to thank Ken Pow for his long-time efforts in teaching the German language.

“You are a bit of a legend amongst German teachers in New Zealand,” “Many know him and his contribution to teaching the German language and I am delighted to wish him well in his future.”

Bauer-Savage also thanked Pow for his contributions.

“I have heard so many great things about you and the fact you have been driving the German language for three decades, nearly four is amazing,” he said.

“We need teachers like you and I just want to say a massive thanks for inspiring so many students.”

The Guardian went to both companies at the centre of the campaign prior to learning the billboard had been removed and both offered up rather neutral views on the content.

Gareth Richards, spokesperson for Ravensdown, said they were naturally disappointed with the advertising.

“We’re disappointed with the billboards and clearly we have a different position,” they said.

They went on to say that they had entered into discussions with Greenpeace over the billboard – but as of yet there appeared to be no resolution to the matter on the horizon.

“Ravensdown initiated a meeting with the billboard’s organisers when we realised Greenpeace did

not understand how our products, expertise and technology are helping farmers to reduce their environmental impact.

“We discussed areas of common ground such as the need for smarter farming and more effective nutrient management which is our specialism. For many years we’ve invested in helping farmers reduce nutrient losses and we have the largest team of farm environmental consultants in the country.”

Richards invited anyone who

was concerned by the billboard’s message to visit the Ravensdown website or Facebook page to make up their own mind.

While Ravensdown came out in defence, Ballance took a far more neutral approach in their response to questions put to them by the Guardian.

“We agree with the sentiment that farming practices need to change, and today’s ‘future-ready’ farmers are already operating their businesses quite differently to the way grandad might have done things,” a spokesperson said.

“There is already a lot of policy focused on improving water quality across urban and rural New Zealand, and that’s exactly why we’re continuing to grow our Farm Sustainability Services team, so that we have specialist advisors in every region supporting farmers as they evolve their businesses.”

Greenpeace said that they had seven of the billboards currently up around the country in varying sizes and thousands of smaller signs which had been distributed to members to put up around the country.

“We have received a lot of support for the billboards,” their spokesperson said.

“But we have not been contacted by the companies since they went up.”

They stated the advertising would be remaining in place until 2019.

When questioned as to whether using the direct approach of publicly naming and shaming companies had a strong impact on trying to solve the solution of pollution in our waterways, they were firm in their stance.

“It has never been more important for people to come togeth-

er and call out irresponsible and reckless companies who put profit before the planet than right now.

“There is zero time and zero reasons left to let polluting companies like Ravensdown and Ballance off the hook.

“Seventy per cent of our rivers are too polluted to swim in. Forty-four per cent of our lakes are heavily polluted. That’s why these billboards are up and that’s why they will stay there.”

Greenpeace also confirmed that for them, the billboards would be just the beginning.

They will soon be working with people around the country to get the government to ban synthetic nitrogen fertiliser for good – and intend on making businesses front up to New Zealanders about why they are still selling a product which is “known to be trashing the environment”.

Unearthing a bumper crop of Christmas potatoes

Plenty of rain is helping grow a bumper crop of Christmas potatoes for the Plains Railway and Historical Museum at Tinwald.

A one hectare paddock was planted at the railway earlier this year and members are now digging and bagging the resulting new spuds ready for sale.

Club member John French said the potatoes were a good size already thanks to the recent rain, perfect for eating now all the way up until Christmas dinner.

“We’ve been digging them for a week, but the weather’s been a bit nasty.”

The annual potato harvest is a fundraiser for the railway and museum team and nets around $10,000, which is used for general running costs at the venue.

“We’ve been doing it now for 30 years.”

A smaller paddock of pick-yourown peas should also be ready by the end of the week and pickers will be allowed onsite in the mornings only.

French, who is part of the six-man team that has nurtured both crops, said the potatoes were the popular variety agria.

Bags of potatoes are on sale at Z service stations, with a 5kg bag selling for $10. Smaller 3kg bags are available at the Plains for $6.

Life sentences for murder accused Two men have been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of 19-year-old Jack McAllister outside Stadium Southland last year.

Brayden Whiting-Roff and Christopher Brown were yesterday sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder.

Laura Scheepers was sentenced to 12 months’ home detention after being found guilty of manslaughter.

Whiting-Roff was given a non-parole period of 12 years

and six months.

Brown was given a non-parole period of 10 years.

McAllister died from injuries suffered during an attack at Stadium Southland on June 7 last year.

He was lured to Stadium Southland by the promise of sex from a young woman.

It was there he suffered 14 stab wounds, including one which severed a major artery.

In a statement following the sentencing, police said that the case

had been a tragedy.

“This case has been a tragedy for Jack’s family, and the thoughts of the investigation team are with them,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Stu Harvey, Invercargill Police.

“This has been one of the largest homicide investigations in the history of the Southland Police and the result is testament to the hard work and dedication of the investigation and prosecution teams.

“We hope this (the sentencing)

goes some way to providing some closure for those close to Jack.”

Outside the courtroom following the statement, the McAllister family made a statement saying they were devastated by the events that had unfolded over the past 19 months, namely the death of their beloved son, the inquiry that followed which included a number of unsubstantiated allegations which were made against Jack.

They wished it be known that Jack was no longer here to dispute

these allegations – “he no longer has a voice,” they said.

“Those that harmed Jack are able to say what they wish in defence of their actions in an ability to absolve themselves from responsibility.

“It has been extremely difficult having to listen to the manner in which Jack’s character was portrayed.

“No family should have to go through that without an ability to respond.”

Cameron praises fight night

Hailed by former pro boxer Shane Cameron as up there with the best of club events, Dubliner Fight Night II had audiences pumping.

About 450 people attended a series of matches between Mid Cantabrians who had undergone 12 weeks of intense training, leading up to the event at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall Methven on Saturday night.

Held every two years, Fight Night is a fundraiser for the Methven Rugby Club, and this time round organisers could not have been happier with the more than $45,000 raised.

While the event was a knockout, the same did not go for contenders, who left the ring standing. There was just one TKO (technical knock-out) on the night, with everyone else lasting the distance.

“Which is what we try and achieve, we don’t want any knockouts, we don’t want any stoppages,” said spokesperson Gary Manning.

Manning said special guest, former Commonwealth cruiserweight champion Shane Cameron, had been blown away by the standard of boxing, and hailed the night as one of the best club

events he had ever attended.

Cameron had also commented on how well matched contenders were, this being something organisers had done according to a range of factors including ability and weight.

The black-tie affair saw audiences dressed up and cheering competitors on as they entered the ring.

For competitor Simon Sharpin, the adrenaline-fuelled leadup was one of the highlights. The Bayleys real estate agent said it was while walking out to the ring, to the theme song he had chosen, he realised now was crunch time when he would be relying on his months of training.

“Everything comes down to that six minutes,” Sharpin said.

His fight was the only one which did not go the whole six minutes, with his opponent feeling a little worse for wear during the third two-minute round.

Manning said at the end of the day everyone who competed was a winner.

“Win, lose or draw, you put your leg through that rope, you are exceptionally brave to do that in front of 450 people.”

There was no doubt there would be another held again in two years’ time.

Organisers going all out for next year’s tenth anniversary

When the stalls are packed away after one event, planning begins almost immediately for the next in what is now one of Ashburton’s iconic events, February’s Multi Cultural Bite festival.

Co-ordinator of this year’s event Ida Caspit said she’s been charged with taking what has become a very well organised event into its 10th anniversary year.

“This year we’re trying to get as many stallholders as possible on board and we want to have more and different traditional dishes on board too,” she said.

In addition she is working to attract a wide range of entertainers to the event. Two of those will be a team of African drummers and performers from a newly formed youth group of Pasifika entertainers. “We’re still looking for additional traditional groups to bring as much different entertainment as possible to the day,” she said.

Caspit has been the driving force behind the Mid Canterbury Filipino Dairy Workers group and said taking on an event that caters to a much wider community will be a challenge, but said she’s excited about the opportunities the event presents to showcase as many different cultures as possible.

“I’m really excited because this is the 10th anniversary and as well as the stalls we have had in the past we’re hoping to add some new cultures this year.”

Low/no alcohol interest pleasing

Health promoters have been buoyed by the number of Mid Canterbury people tasting then buying low or no-alcohol beer and wine recently.

Tania Scott, who works for the Ashburton Community Alcohol

and Drug Service, said she was run off her feet at tastings in Ashburton and Rakaia last week and was delighted to see people trying healthier alternatives.

“At New World Ashburton on Thursday, more than 80 people tried what we were offering and at least 20 bought products, though

we weren’t there to sell, just to offer a taste.”

Most of the tastings that night were of low-alcohol wine. “Most people commented it tastes just like wine.”

At Rakaia Four Square the next night, most of the 50 people who accepted a sample were men who

were trying a low-alcohol beer for the first time.

“The tastings have been a roaring success. People are trying stuff and thinking about what they could be drinking if they are driving. We’ve also been reminding people how easy it is with other products to get over the limit with-

out even realising it, especially in the heat.”

Drivers under 20 have a zero alcohol limit, while the limit for drivers aged 20 and over is 250mcg.

Scott and her team will be at the Four Square in Methven on Friday, where they will be running a tasting between 5-7pm.

■ BRITISH TOURIST MURDER

Still a lot of work to do Grace Millane’s body has been recovered and a man charged with her murder – but police still have months of hard work ahead of them in their pursuit of justice for the slain tourist.

The alleged killer appeared in court yesterday as a post-mortem examination was carried out to establish when and how exactly Millane died. An image of the accused on his way to court shows him sitting in the back seat of a police car next to a police officer.

Millane had been travelling around New Zealand as part of a year-long OE and arrived in Auckland on November 30.

The next night she was captured on CCTV footage entering the CityLife hotel in the CBD with a 26-year-old man.

He allegedly murdered Millane sometime that night, or the next day – which was her 22nd birthday.

Nine days later her body was found in an area of bush in West Auckland’s Waitakere Ranges.

While finding her body and making an arrest may seem like the closing of the case, police still have weeks if not months of hard work ahead.

The team behind Operation Gourami – the investigation into Millane’s murder – is now tasked with building a case against her alleged killer in a bid to secure a conviction.

If he pleads not guilty, the matter will go to trial in the High Court at Auckland, and police need to ensure they have gathered as much evidence as possible to convince a jury the man is guilty beyond reasonable doubt.

Operation Gourami is headed by Detective Inspector Scott Beard, who was unable to comment further on the case as it was before the courts.

He previously said the investigation centred around forensic evidence gathered from the hotel room Millane went to with the accused.

And, a car linked to the alleged murder was also a key focus.

Grace Millane Chris Cahill, also a detective inspector who spent many years running investigations in Auckland city, said making an arrest in a murder case was only “half the challenge”.

“Now they have to put forward a prosecution case that will withstand scrutiny to get justice for Grace and her family,” he said.

“It’s a hell of a lot of work.”

Cahill said murders were “bittersweet” to investigate.

“They are really unusual to deal with when as a detective – on one level they are the ultimate investigation to work on and in some ways the ultimate honour,” he explained.

“You go and stand up for victims who can no longer stand up for themselves.

“No matter what you do, you can’t turn back the clock and bring that person back, so you’re starting from a really hard position.

“The best thing you can do is ensure they get justice and to do that you have to do the best possible inquiry you can.”

Cahill said Beard and his team had done “incredibly well” so far

- particularly in finding Millane so her family can take her home.

“On these investigations, everyone is so motivated to do the best possible job to ensure the team gets the best possible result.

“You never get people arguing over the long hours they have to work or what roles they are assigned - and some roles are better than others, there’s a lot of hard slog.

“For example, going through CCTV is a hell of a draining process – sitting there working for hours and hours trying to spot the one thing that’s of value to the inquiry.

“But they all know that these little pieces of information are important to getting a result,” Cahill said.

Retired Detective Inspector Graham Bell, who was an officer for 33 years before fronting crime show Police Ten 7 for more than a decade, explained what the Operation Gourami team would be doing in coming days.

“Meticulous” forensic examinations of the crime scenes - both the hotel and where Mil-

lane’s body was found - would be ongoing.

And, the car police believe is linked to the case will be examined from top to bottom in a bid to glean any evidence relating to the dead woman or the accused.

The car was rented in Auckland on Sunday and found later in Taupo.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the car in the West Auckland area on Monday December 3 to contact them.

Bell said alongside the scene investigations – area canvasses will also be carried out around both locations, or anywhere else where there had been confirmed sightings of the accused.

After the post-mortem was complete, Millane’s body would be released to her family.

“What they have to do, especially when there is an accused person involved, is to provide his lawyer with an opportunity to be present at the post-mortem – or conduct their own,” he said.

“These things can take a while, but they usually try to get the body to be released as soon as they can.”

PM Ardern apologises to Millane family Choking back tears, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has taken the unusual step of apologising to the family of murdered British traveller Grace Millane on behalf of all New Zealand.

Millane had been travelling around New Zealand as part of a year-long OE. Her body has been recovered and a man charged with her murder.

Speaking at her post-Cabinet press conference yesterday, Ardern said the murder was a tragedy.

“I cannot imagine the grief of her family and what they would be experiencing and feeling right now. My thoughts and prayers are with her father David who is in the country, her mother Gillian who cannot be here, and her wider family and friends and loved ones.

“From the Kiwis I have spoken to, there is this overwhelming sense of hurt and shame that this has happened in our country, a place that prides itself on our hospitality, on our manaakitanga, especially those visiting our shores.

“On behalf of New Zealand, I want to apologise to Grace’s family.”

Her voice cracking, Ardern said: “Your daughter should have been safe here, and she wasn’t, and I’m sorry for that.”

Ardern said that it was “not necessarily” the Prime Minister’s place to apologise on behalf of the country.

“It’s just something I sense that New Zealanders may have wanted to convey, and I’m in a position perhaps where I’m able to convey that.

“We pride ourselves on being a place where people are welcome and where they’re safe, and that hasn’t happened in this case. I feel the sense that New Zealanders found it quite personal.”

She acknowledged she also felt the tragedy personally.

“I don’t think I’m alone in feeling that way. I think all New Zealanders will just feel their heart breaking for that family.” - NZME

Kushner ‘in close contact’ Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law and adviser, reportedly offered private counselling to Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi Crown Prince, on how “how to weather the storm” after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Three former senior officials told The New York Times they had long feared that Kushner’s informal conversations with MBS, as he is nicknamed, made him susceptible to manipulation.

The White House reimposed rules that insisted National Security Council staffers be included on calls with foreign leaders, they said.

But they continued to talk – often communicating by text message – even after the October 2 death of Khashoggi sent relations between the two countries into a spin, according to the claims of two of the former officials and two people briefed by the Saudis.

A White House spokesman told the New Times: “Jared has always meticulously followed protocols and guidelines regarding the relationship with MBS and all of the other foreign officials with whom he interacts.”

The Crown Prince has denied any involvement in the killing.

Despite initially claiming it played no role, Saudi Arabia has admitted a team of rogue operatives flew to Turkey and killed Khashoggi.

The CIA has determined that the Crown Prince personally ordered the killing.

Jared Kushner and Mohammed bin Salman have forged a close relationship. his support behind Saudi Arabia, insisting the US has yet to finally conclude who was responsible and talking up the importance of ties with the country in keeping Iran in check.

The reports suggest Kushner was a key voice inside the White House arguing that Saudi Arabia remained a critical part of the president’s Middle East strategy.

The relationship has been two years in the making, including a meeting with the Crown Prince’s most senior aides in the month when Trump was elected.

A slide obtained by the Lebanese newspaper Al Akhbar apparently reveals the views of a Saudi delegation that visited

the US in November 2016.

“The inner circle is predominantly deal makers who lack familiarity with political customs and deep institutions, and they support Jared Kushner,” it said.

It appeared to pay off.

When Prince Mohammed met Trump at the White House in March last year, Kushner arranged for the kind of media treatment usually afforded only heads of state, according to a source involved in the arrangements.

In a rare interview, Kushner previously said he urged the Crown Prince to be “fully transparent” about the fate of the dead journalist.

The new allegations that the two remained in close contact

brought fresh calls from critics of Trump to take a tougher stance.

Marco Rubio, who sits on the Senate foreign relations committee, said the evidence of the Crown Prince’s role was clear.

“It is an alliance that has limits, like any alliance would,” he said.

“This is a crown prince that is a reckless individual.”

He added that the relationship came with human rights obligations.

“We cannot be a nation that says when our allies do something horrifying we’re going to look away.

“It is not in our national interest to be a defender of human rights violations,” he said.

Newlyweds’ fatal photoshoot A memorable photo turned into a tragic death after a woman plunged 100m off a cliff.

Newlywed Jolandi le Roux was celebrating her 31st birthday last Sunday evening on top of a high cliff in Cape Town, South Africa when she decided she wanted to take a photo of herself leaping in air as if she was leaping over the sun.

But she tripped when landing at Lookout Pt and fell down the cliff, landing in a dead tree at the bottom.

Her 33-year-old husband Andrew, who is also an experienced trail runner, managed to find his way down the 65-degree mountainside.

Rescuers say he got to within about 9m of where her body was hanging, but no further.

It took rescuers over three hours to get to her, a further three hours in the dark and rain to bring her body to the summit.

It is believed the couple ignored warning signs and crossed a metal railing barrier to get to the cliff edge.

Especially in the dark when all you’ve got is a headlamp.”

“Rocks were falling all around me. One of them was as big as a car engine. So we decided to swing me across to the other cliff side.”

As Young reached le Roux at the bottom of the cliff, he could tell she was dead from multiple head and body fractures.

Once her body had been brought up to the clifftop and placed a van, her heartbroken father thanked rescuers for their efforts.

“I thought that was very brave of him considering the complete nightmare they were going through,” one of the rescuers said. “It made the long night worthwhile because it’s not every day that we get a thank you like that.”

Millane’s murder impacts on nation I

t’s been a sad tale which has gripped our nation, but the death of tourist Grace Millane should have us hanging our heads in shame. Not because we are at fault, but because we, as nation, should expect better of our fellow Kiwis.

We’re a proud bunch, built on a strong reputation of extending incredible hospitality to those who come on to our shores for a holiday – and here we are, being blasted out into the world as a country where it’s not safe to come visit on your own – a country where you have to watch your back at every turn.

We know ourselves, that’s not the real New Zealand though –

and we must keep remembering that.

Every batch has a couple of bad eggs in amongst it and we shouldn’t let the stench of those ruin the overall appeal of everything else.

Talk to people from all over the world about their experiences of visiting our country and they’ll regale you with some amazing

stories about the kindness and the generosity of the everyday Kiwi folk.

Those are the stories we need to be broadcasting to the world now – not those which bring embarrassment and shame to our proud nation.

The circumstances around the death of Grace are pretty grim and watching our Prime Minister sit on the verge of tears yesterday as she went through her weekly media stand up further underlined just how much this story has impacted on a huge part of the population.

Social media pages have been busy with comments and messages around the tragic situation

– people pleading to not tar the entire country with the same brush as the negative minority who bring bad light upon us.

To think that someone so young could come into our country to enjoy everything it has to offer, only to have her life cut so horribly short by the actions of one individual is nauseating to say the least.

It shows that we, as a society, still have a long way to go.

That someone can even ponder the thought of intentionally harming someone to the point where their life is taken from them is unfathomable for most of us – but there are those out there who, whether it be in a

moment of rage and anger or a premeditated manner, seem content with the prospect.

New Zealand is a good place. A friendly place and a place where we should all be able to encourage someone to come and visit.

There are adventures here that can’t be found anywhere else in the world and moments that can be enjoyed which are unrivalled by anything else.

So, while we hang our heads this week because of the actions of one individual, lets also try and remember everything that can be good about this place we call home.

We expected the effectiveness of the WTO in enforcing agreed rules, and the continuing – albeit gradual – decline in tariffs would continue. This is now at risk.

The international trade court system is under threat. The USA is refusing to sanction reappointment of judges that hear appeals at the WTO. If that doesn’t change, by December 2019 the enforceable disputes mechanism will disappear.

Don’t just blame President Trump for this; the non-sanctioning process started under the Obama administration.

Protectionism is on the rise with tit-for-tat tariff retaliation not just between the USA and China, but also the EU and others. Some $481 billion of trade has been sucked into these retaliatory tariffs already.

Suddenly, the free trade agreements (FTAs) New Zealand has been pursuing have become even more important, not just for preferential access for our goods, but because they contain enforceable rules.

There are now more than 300 FTAs around the world but New Zealand has never used the state-to-state settlement processes they contain. With the WTO under so much strain, from the beginning of 2020 those provisions in FTAs may be tested.

With the CPTPP coming into force on December 31, the amount of New Zealand’s trade covered by FTAs will rise from 53 to 64 per cent. That will rise to more than 75 per cent if we successfully conclude negotiations with the EU. Pacific Alliance (Chile, Peru, Colombia, and Mexico) FTA negotiations continue but the two big holes that remain are India and the USA.

Compounding this is the problems we face with Brexit.

We want to protect the hardwon legal commitments we have from the EU with beef, sheep meat and dairy, but at the same time we need to defend our WTO rights, pursue our FTA with the EU and look to launch negotiations with the UK when it is ready to do so. This will be like a three-dimensional game of chess.

A message to farmers, processors and exporters was to report to a new MFAT complaints portal any non-tariff barriers they strike in overseas markets.

These are things like licensing arrangements and non-science based or so-called phytosanitary certification issues used to block us from markets. They cost about $6 billion every year.

MFAT will reply to any queries within two working days and, in coalition with other trading partners, is stepping up to call out such practices and to try and stamp illegal non-tariff barriers out.

We also know that 40 per cent of the benefit of an FTA can

be lost if it isn’t implemented correctly – essentially raising its profile and making sure businesses are aware of the new opportunities and the tariff and other preferences they can enjoy.

It’s a puzzle, for example, why more than 10,000 of New Zealand’s small and medium enterprises export to Australia, where we no longer enjoy any particular tariff preference, yet far fewer of those firms export anywhere else.

We need to do more to encourage our small and medium exporters to take advantage of these carefully negotiated and hard won FTAs. MFAT is working on this as well with NZTE, MPI and others.

s they strive for top quality products and environmental sustainability, farmers know well the hurdles in their way in the form of storms and droughts, erosion and biosecurity threats, ill-conceived regulations and price/cost fluctuations.

But perhaps they don’t often think about the battles going on downstream that are crucial to our meat, dairy, wool, horticultural and arable produce getting a good return from international buyers. Obstacles on that front include unreasonable tariffs and subsidies, nations that don’t adhere to agreed trade obligations and a highly concerning uptick in protectionism.

Federated Farmers members attending our National Council meeting in Wellington recently were reminded of these emerging risks by an absorbing discussion with Vangelis Vitalis.

He’s the deputy secretary, trade and economics, with our Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and among his long list of credentials is that for two years he chaired the agricultural negotiations at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and was our Chief Negotiator for the recently-secured Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement (CPTPP).

It is clear that there has been a period of “golden weather” in trade terms since the end of the Uruguay Round of the multilateral trade negotiations and the formation of the WTO in 1995.

For the first time there were enforceable rules on agricultural trade practices, with mechanisms to hear disputes. Agricultural export subsidies that had affected prices by as much as 2030 per cent were finally knocked on the head at the end of 2015.

We took the Australians to task at the WTO on apple import protections and won. Same with the USA over lamb, EU on dairy and, most recently, Indonesia over a range of non-tariff barriers affecting beef.

All eyes focused on Brexit vote

British MPs are due to vote on the proposed Brexit deal, agreed by the UK and the European Union, on Tuesday evening, UK time.

If Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal is passed legislation would be introduced so it comes into force in March, but it is expected to find little favour with opposition parties, let alone the Conservative Party.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president Michael Salvesen said farmers would have a better idea of what was in store for them trade-wise closer to Christmas.

“The short answer is it’s not good news almost every way. Britain is our best ally in the EU and when they go we won’t have a best ally. There are disagreements both left and right so they have got themselves in this state and there isn’t an agreed way forward with their population. Communities and families are split down the middle.’’

He said there would be no automatic trade access for NZ farmers and growers into the UK or existing access into the EU and trade deals would have to be renegotiated which would be a lengthy process.

“Further down the track there may be some trade advantages.

Britain will want to do deals with the United States and many other countries on a bilateral and multilateral basis.

If Europe doesn’t want to deal with the UK that could open up markets. If there is one thing markets don’t like it is surprises and they work on confidence.’’

The UK could be expected to enter trade talks with NZ’s trade partners and the UK currency

Mid Canterbury farmers, along with Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president Michael Salvesen, are keeping a wary eye on the trade repercussions of “messy’’ Brexit talks unfolding in the United Kingdom.

PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN would likely take a hit post-Brexit so that would not be in NZ’s favour. However, UK supermarkets would be keen to get supplies, so that could present opportunities.

UK supermarkets import about 70 per cent of their vegetables and 90 per cent of fruit as well as a lot of meat and other products.

“They will be desperate to make sure trade goes on, but it will de-

pend what the trade deal is and we don’t know what this will look like – there is a heap of unknowns.’’

Salvesen said Scotland would prefer to have remained in the EU, but this was not favoured by the UK and the position of Northern Ireland was unresolved so “it’s a mess’’.

He said EU trade talks could be expected to be tough on the UK as

its members would not want further countries splitting off.

Studies had shown that average wages would fall further from Brexit over the next 10 years.

UK borders would have to be set up again for trade, multi-site manufacturing would have to be unravelled and companies were already stockpiling goods in the expectation that supplies would

run short.

“With the leadership being so utterly divided if there was a further referendum it will split the country down the middle because it’s 50:50 pretty much,’’ said Salvesen.

He said the British government would rather have another referendum than a general election because it might lose.

BU GUY TRAFFORD Sheep numbers are continuing to decline nationally although the South Island numbers have increased, mainly as numbers for the Canterbury-Marlborough region recover after the droughts of 2015-16.

Based upon their annual survey Beef and Lamb have published the results of last season’s survey. Overall lamb numbers, which are the engine room of the sheep industry, at 23.8 million are (only) down by 0.7 per cent or 163,000 this is due to a record national lambing which at 129 per cent is well up on the 10 year average of 121.4 per cent.

Each 1 per cent equates to 174,000 lambs so the increasing production farmers are managing to obtain is mitigating the impact upon the processing industry.

Total ewe numbers are down 2.1 per cent to 17.5 million.

The lift in production is all the more commendable given that the best land has be siphoned off to (arguably) more productive land use such as dairying and cattle finishing.

While beef cattle numbers have also been declining over the last 30 or so years, dropping from 4.6 million in 1990 down to 3.5 million by the 2015-16 season, latterly they have begun to increase lifting in the last two years to approx. 3.68 million.

This lift also apparently is impacting upon sheep numbers as the aging farming population find working cattle less physically demanding than sheep, hastening sheep demise.

Lamb prices to farmers for the last and current season have shown a considerable lift based upon increasing international demand for lamb meat and the kinder seasons for farmers helping to keep the processing companies sharpening their collective pencils.

In the short term, the decline in numbers has perhaps not been felt too harshly by the processing companies as the higher lambing percentage has help disguise it but also the increasing kill from reducing numbers has also meant in the short-term numbers through the processors have held well.

For the 2017-18 season 24.1million sheep were processed for export compared to 23 million the previous year.

From a sheep numbers perspective, the concerning numbers surround the adult sheep with the ewe kill up to 4 million from 3.6 the previous year and hoggets’ 242,000 up from 230,000 the previous year.

One of the reasons that sheep farming has been so successful over the previous 100 years (mostly) has been due to the comprehensive infrastructure that has built up around it, these include; processing plants, trucking companies, saleyards and stock and station agencies.

As numbers decline, the infrastructure and the accompanying competitive advantage that it brings will be reduced and while prices may remain at current levels costs are likely to increase and erode profitability.

Over time a buffering effect to meat prices has been the wool clip however, as time has gone by wool, with the exception of merino and mid-micron wools which make up a relatively small percentage of the total wool clip, has reduced profitability to the point where it is becoming close to a cost to the farming system.

So, the dual-purpose animal which was the backbone of the sheep industry in reality exists no more. The glimmer of hope for sheep numbers could come in the form of sheep dairying. There are a number of system options farmers can adopt depending upon their land resources and preferences.

But an outcome of a vibrant sheep dairy industry could be an equally vibrant meat industry with both piggy-backing on each other and making another true dual-purpose animal.

With the use of terminal sires there is no reason why the resulting sheep dairy lamb crop cannot be an asset to the meat industry.

To date interest in establishing international processing capacity has been shown by the dairy industry, however the meat companies are also now getting interested in the potential sheep dairying can offer.

Both industries are needing to expand their bases with peak cow having arrived, or close it, and sheep numbers reducing.

Who knows, maybe a good case could be made to Uncle Shane and the Provincial Development Fund for some exploratory funding.

With the announcement of the new low emissions support fund perhaps an argument could be made on that basis.

Markets Cattle Schedules this week were relatively stable for a change with very little movement and Alliance bucked the recent trend by having a small lift in the Bull schedule. Buyer activity at the saleyards apparently is in a “frenzy” due to the abundance of feed around at the moment, however, prices have backed off a tad showing that even in times of plenty buyers are still rational.

Sheep

Unlike the cattle, the processors certainly took the butchers knife to the lamb schedule with over $2 being trimmed off the 17.5kg benchmark grade.

As with the cattle the store market remains strong although for lambs the $200 plus mark looks to be gone until we start getting into the winter premium territory.

Ewe prices appear to be holding up well both on schedule and in the saleyards with prices well in excess of $200 being achieved.

Venison

A similar story as the lambs for the deer schedule with 20 cents per kg being shaved off.

Dairy

Even though the Global Dairy Trade lifted last week the monitored USDA site continued the downward trend seen for the last eight months which will better explain the big cut Fonterra has done on their forecast price range for the season.

Prices are being compounded by the strongish dollar and it could potentially get stronger against the US dollar with the economy over there starting to feel the effects of the trade war.

Shared loans ‘no silver bullet’

By Tamsyn Parker Mortgage brokers say a new shared ownership loan scheme to be offered by the BNZ is another option for home-buyers but won’t be a silver bullet for solving the housing affordability issue.

The bank yesterday announced it was launching a shared ownership scheme in the New Year with an Auckland pilot targeting lending on new house builds.

Details of the scheme – which will see BNZ partner with a yet-tobe-named home finance company – haven’t been revealed yet.

But in shared ownership schemes operated overseas, a buyer would typically put up 10 per cent of the deposit and the third party investor another 10 per cent, with the bank lending the remaining 80 per cent.

Buyers avoid paying the low-equity premiums they would be hit by if they’d borrowed more than 80 per cent but pay a fee to the third party for taking on the shared equity.

As the purchaser builds up cap-

ital, or is able to refinance, they can buy out the third party’s stake at the current market value.

Paul Carter, chief customer officer consumer and wealth at the BNZ said the shared ownership scheme would give eligible customers an opportunity to get into their first home faster.

“Some New Zealanders are lucky enough to have mums and dads topping up their savings, so they can get the deposit to buy a house.

“Not everyone has family to call

on in this way and that’s where shared ownership could help,” Carter said.

Bruce Patten, a mortgage adviser at Loan Market, said while it was good to have another option for home-buyers shared ownership was not going to be for everyone.

“Still the hardest thing for a client will be to get that first 10 per cent together.”

Patten said he would rather see more lenders looking at 95 per cent lending again for the

right-profiled clients, rather than a shared scheme.

“There are plenty of people, especially in Auckland, that can get the 5 per cent together, but 10 per cent just takes them that much longer if you are spending the average of $1 million in Auckland.”

Patten said people also needed to weigh up the cost of shared equity versus having a smaller deposit and paying a low-equity fee.

“The thing to be mindful of is that in a rising property value market, you will be paying out the third party funding a percentage of the capital gain when you go to pay them out, so you need to factor in, do I put in 10 per cent and pay a low-equity fee or do 20 per cent shared and pay an unknown amount in the future to release the third?”

John Bolton, chief executive of Squirrel Mortgages, also questioned what would happen in a market where there wasn’t much capital gain to be made.

“What happens in a soft housing market?

“How strong a market is there going to be for shared equity in a market that is through its peak?”

The New Zealand property market has flattened off in the past 18 months and there are concerns prices in Auckland may fall on the back of drops in Sydney and Melbourne’s housing markets.

Bolton said shared equity would also not solve the fundamental issue for first-home buyers, which was affordability.

“Most first-home buyers have got some sort of deposit with KiwiSaver.”

Easing the loan-to-value ratios next year should also make it easier for more people to get in the door with a smaller deposit.

“We are not finding the deposit is an issue. It’s more around servicing.”

If a buyer could not service that level of debt then someone else topping up the deposit may not make much difference, he said.

“Is this going to make a difference because these people are going to be pretty stretched?”

Going over your credit card limit can have a negative impact on your credit history and end up costing you when it comes to borrowing on a personal loan.

Beware overmaxing your card

By Tamsyn Parker People with a history of failing to pay their bills and debts on time may end up paying thousands of dollars more for a personal loan, research has revealed.

A person borrowing $10k over three years could pay $2k more in interest if they have a poor credit rating compared to someone with a good rating, according to Canstar.

The research firm found someone with a poor credit rating could be charged 21.29 per cent interest per annum, costing them $3616 in interest compared to $1386 in interest at a rate of 8.63 per cent for someone with a good credit history.

Credit ratings are based on how reliable you are at paying bills, mortgages, rents and other expenses.

Individuals have a score rang-

ing from zero to 1000 with anything over 700 considered to be a good credit score.

You can find out your credit score for free at www.creditsimple.co.nz Jose George, general manager of Canstar New Zealand, said a low credit score could see a borrower thousands of dollars out of pocket when it came to personal lending.

“Personal loans come in all shapes and sizes,” he said.

“From the more traditional bank loans and store credit deals to the newer peer-to-peer lending options that are now available in New Zealand, the rates on offer can vary greatly but lenders are more willing to give the more favourable rates to someone who looks financially responsible and can be trusted to pay their loan back.”

But George said the good news

was that a credit score was not fixed and people could improve it.

“Paying bills, rent, mortgage or other payments on time will gain you points whereas late or defaulted payments will have the reverse effect.”

George also urged credit card holders not to max out their limit and to try to avoid using more than 30 per cent of their credit limit.

“Don’t hop from card to card via balance transfers as this will look like you are avoiding paying off your debt.”

George said those thinking about applying for a loan should do their research online before taking the plunge.

“If you apply for too many loans around the same time, this may have a negative impact on your credit score as it insinuates you are not managing your finances very well.”

Three ways with trifle

■ Place 200g of the berries into a food processor with the icing sugar and blitz to combine. Strain through a sieve to remove the pips.

■ Spoon the puree into the base of 6 glasses. Break the sponge cake into bits and place a layer carefully on the purée, drizzle over some sherry, then spoon a layer of custard, followed by a layer of berries.

■ Continue the layering to the top of your glasses. Finish with whipped cream.

■ Cover and refrigerate until needed. Decorate the top with a few berries and mint leaves.

QUICK RECIPE Individual trifles 500g fresh berries 1/4 C icing sugar 1 bakery sponge cake 500mls custard 250mls cream lightly whipped Mint leaves to garnish

Caramel, banana and chocolate trifle 500ml custard 1 store bought sponge cake 2 bananas, sliced into rounds 250ml cream, lightly whipped 1 cup store bought chocolate and/ or caramel sauce Grated milk chocolate, to serve ■ Use the method above, but omit the berries and layer the glasses with custard, sponge, bananas and your favourite caramel and/ or chocolate sauce.

■ Top with a blob of whipped cream and some grated chocolate or banana slices.

Trifle ice cream 1 store bought bakery jam roll 500g fresh berries, plus extra for garnish 1/2 C icing sugar 250ml cream, lightly whipped 500ml custard

1/2 C sherry, marsala or brandy Mint leaves to garnish ■ Line a 20cm tin with plastic wrap.

■ Thinly slice (1/2 cm) a bakery jam roll, lining the bottom and sides of the tin and reserving some for the top.

■ Puree berries with icing sugar, then put through a sieve to remove the pips.

■ Fold whipped cream and puree into the custard.

■ Sprinkle the sherry over the sponge. Pour the custard mixture into the tin. Carefully place the remaining jam roll on top and freeze for 7 hours / overnight.

■ Garnish with berries and mint leaves.

Finding the Ng King images

BY CONNOR LYSAGHT Some time ago, two banana boxes of dirty and damaged glass plate negatives came into the possession of our amazing archivist, Kathleen Stringer.

These photo negatives came to us in absolutely terrible shape, having been covered in dirt and grime after being stored under the floorboards of a garden shed for, possibly, decades.

These large format images (about 100 x 140mm) are made from thin sheets of glass with an albumin emulsion to produce a remarkably life-like detailed image – tiny details can be seen once scanned into a positive image, and enlarged.

Thankfully, Kathleen’s restorative skills have saved hundreds of the glass negatives so far, allowing us another window into Ashburton’s past.

Kathleen has been painstakingly cleaning each glass negative plate with the help of our volunteers, and I have often seen Kathleen with many negatives spread across her desk – even as I write this!

Once she has cleaned a batch of negatives, they are scanned as high quality images and saved into our vast digital photo collection.

As of writing this article, nearly four hundred of these negatives have made their way into our digital collection – which means Kathleen has gone to the effort of preparing and scanning every single one.

Delicate tasks lead to global efforts Since the glass negatives are grubby and are extremely hard to read before scanning, you only come to realise that the subjects of the photos are real human beings once they have been scanned and

pop up on Kathleen’s computer monitor.

The process of putting names to faces can be an arduous and, doubtful, one, as not all of the images have names still legible.

It is only with the support of the wider community that we can hope to identify all of the photographers’ subjects.

One of the most successful methods we have found for doing this is through our Facebook posts.

After we posted a select few of these scanned glass negatives to our Facebook page, we received more comments and responses than we expected. Not only was the response great, but it was also extremely helpful – multiple people have come forward and identified the subjects of some of the negatives.

The Ng King family photos Some of the first negatives we shared with the public were of early members of the Ng family in Ashburton, who were identified through Facebook sharing and discussion with family members today.

Family members identified photographs of Charlie King, James (Jimmy) King, as well as possible photos of Ng Hok Eng and Eng Moon Jem. The Ng King family were extremely important in Ashburton’s history, and so it is extremely valuable for us, the family, and the town, to have photographs of the Kings on hand.

We are sure that none of these stylish gentlemen could ever have imagined that these treasured large format glass plates would one day circulate the globe in a digital format.

The most incredible part of this, however, is the fact that through the Ng family Facebook group,

these photographs made their way to different members of the family across the world, meaning that identifying the King negatives was an effort that spanned the globe.

Through continued crowdsourcing of the identification process for the photographed individuals, we are optimistic that eventually all the photo subjects will be named, or at least the ones whose faces are visible and are not completely lost where the fragile albumin surface has been blotted out.

Clear picture Thanks to some community pointers and research we have discerned that these photographs were taken at the Halma’s studio.

The photographers were situated in the Saunders building on

East Street, which was demolished much later in the 1990s.

The building was home to a number of photography studios after Halma’s, including Charles Tindall’s studio whose collection is held at the museum; so this means that we have an almost-family tree of different photographers that worked under the same roof through the decades.

Overall, the identification of these glass negatives helps us to fill in gaps in the history of Ashburton and local people, and in knowing

that the photographs were taken at Halma’s, we have a timeframe for these photos – as early as 1880-90 and as late as 1920 or 1930.

Without the help of the community in identifying the subjects of our glass negative collection, through Facebook or otherwise, we would be flying in the dark.

With that said, our team at Ashburton Museum extend our sincerest thanks and humbly invite you to keep providing us with information about our glass negatives.

Honouring the Fallen During the period of the First World War, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return – almost 450 from Ashburton were killed.

The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 – the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men.

The Ashburton Museum, with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton, has erected one of the original Ferriman flagpoles in front of the museum, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. An original flag is on display in the museum.

After the cessation of hostilities when the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918, a number of other soldiers, including some from Ashburton, died from wounds received, from illness and from accident.

Fourth ‘disappointing’ The New Zealand men’s sevens side finished in fourth place at the Cape Town tournament after they were blasted off the park by a sharp United States outfit at the semi-final stage.

The Kiwis completed a disappointing final day of the latest stop of the new world series season when they were beaten 10-5 by hosts South Africa in the bronze medal playoff.

Ravaged by injuries over the past two weeks, Coach Clark Laidlaw said while the fourth place finish is disappointing there is also a lot to take out of the weekend.

“We are proud of what this team has done.

“We have 11 or 12 players unavailable at home but this group has done well, to come from behind against South Africa in pool play in front of a 50,000-strong crowd was a huge occasion and we played really well against Australia but USA got on top of us,” said Laidlaw.

In brief Supercars rookie quits New Zealand driver Richie Stanaway and Tickford Racing have parted ways after a shocking rookie Supercars season.

Stanaway finished 25th in his first full season in the championship, despite starting the year with high hopes after his Sandown 500 victory in 2017 as a co-driver for Cam Waters. By the time Southland finished batting in their Hawke Cup cricket match against Mid Canterbury in Invercargill at the weekend, any hopes Mid Canterbury had of winning were gone.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first in the two-day match, Southland – the current Hawke Cup holders – took control and played the game exactly how they wanted to play it, with their eyes firmly fixed on their coming three-day Hawke Cup challenges.

The game ended in a draw with both sides taking five points each from it, but for Southland, where they ended up at the end of the zone matches didn’t matter.

As the holders, it didn’t matter if they won all their zone matches, or lost them all, their main goal was to be in the best possible form by the time their challenges rolled around so they stood the best chance of retaining the cup.

By the end of the first day against Mid Canterbury, Southland were well and truly in control at 391/8 and then picked up where they left off on Sunday afternoon – after a delayed start due to rain – eventually declaring

at 472/8 with about an hour to play before tea.

Mid Canterbury debutant Richard Turpie did best with the ball picking up 4/97, and fellow debutant Will Graham and James Southby took two wickets each.

But the Southland batsmen were determined to bat for a day and a half as that was what they’d have to do come the three-day challenges, so that was what they did.

After a couple of early breakthroughs, Shaun Fitzgibbon came in at three and scored 95 before being trapped leg before

Garfield Charles Cameron Jopson was still there at the end, not out at 52 along with Turpie (6 not out).

Mid Canterbury coach Garfield Charles said when it came to his side’s turn at bat, it was all about negotiating the 65 overs left in the day and surviving.

“We were never going to chase down their runs in 60 overs so we were just left to bat out, and

those are always difficult situations to be in when the only purpose for batting is to bat to time, and it’s something none of our guys would be experienced at because most of the diet of cricket they have is a limited overs kind,” Charles said.

Charles said Southland never really tried to win the game by bowling them out either.

On a lifeless wicket, they just wanted to get as much of the game played as possible to help their own preparation for challenge time.

“We got five points out of it so it wasn’t a total loss.

“The boys showed some fight, but it just got away from us,” Charles said.

“Everybody bowled well, I just think we showed a little bit of inexperience with our strategy, which can be worked on.”

Mid Canterbury are now three points behind Otago Country and South Canterbury, and while the other teams will play again this weekend, Mid Canterbury’s next game wasn’t until the New Year.

Charles said that would hopefully be a good thing because by then they’d know exactly what they needed to do.

Kearney in the dark Stephen Kearney says he was shocked to learn Shaun Johnson felt the pair had a poor relationship, having never sensed an issue in their seven years together as coach and player. Warriors coach Kearney revealed Johnson first told him some home truths when the halfback requested an early release from his contract last month. Kearney was surprised, after a relationship which began in 2012 when, as New Zealand coach, he introduced the exciting young playmaker to effectively replace Benji Marshall. Knights chasing Mann Newcastle are expected to announce the signing of utility Kurt Mann on a three-year NRL contract after departing St George Illawarra. The Knights are hoping to secure Mann’s signature until the end of the 2021 season after departing St George Illawarra. It’s believed Brown intends to convert him into a No.9 as Slade Griffin recovers from a fourth ACL injury.

During his 90 NRL games for St George Illawarra and Melbourne, the 25-year-old played every position in the backline and was this year used by Paul McGregor as a bench forward but has never started at No.9.

Test hero gets the axe

Seven wickets on his test debut wasn’t enough for Will Somerville to keep his place in the Black Caps squad.

The Black Caps take on Sri Lanka in two tests, starting at the Basin Reserve on Saturday.

With only one spinner set to play in the home tests, the Black Caps selectors have opted to retain Ajaz Patel ahead of Somerville, with both players having performed well in the series victory over Pakistan.

Patel is the specialist spinner in the 13 player squad, with Somerville and Ish Sodhi released to play in the fourth round of the Plunket Shield, along with Tom Blundell, who also drops out from the victorious United Arab Emirates touring party, with Will Young taking his place.

Colin de Grandhomme retains his place in the squad, despite the all-rounder averaging just 10.5 in six innings with the bat in the UAE. However, a handy cameo in the third test, a lack of like-for-like

replacements, and contributions with the ball (five wickets at 25.6), was enough for the 32-year-old to keep his spot.

Patel (3-42) and Somerville (3-52) both had a strong case for retention as well, having ripped through Pakistan in the fourth innings of the third test.

Somerville also claimed four first-innings wickets to finish with match figures of 7-127, on debut.

However, it behooves the Black Caps to play on green wickets for the upcoming series, with their stellar seam attack set to be far superior to Sri Lanka’s seamers.

Additionally, the last time New Zealand used two recognised spinners in Wellington was 2000 against Zimbabwe, when Brooke Walker and Paul Wiseman made the starting XI. Galactic Star a kingmaker

New Zealand-bred galloper Beauty Generation reinforced why he is rated the best turf miler in the world on Sunday, demolishing his opposition in the Gr.1 Longines Hong Kong Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin. The Road to Rock gelding made it back-to-back wins in the Hong Kong feature, with reigning Hong Kong Champion jockey Zac Purton guiding him to his fourth victory at elite level.

However, the John Mooretrained runner didn’t have everything his own way, sitting three-wide in the early stages of the race after jumping away well from barrier 12.

He eventually wrestled the lead at the 800m mark and wasn’t headed for the remainder of the race, winning effortlessly by three lengths.

While the eyes of the racing world watched in awe, his proud breeder Greg Tomlinson relied on the call of Hong Kong race caller Brett Davis to take in his biggest moment as a breeder.

“He’s such a gutsy horse,” Tomlinson said.

“Unfortunately, I haven’t had the opportunity to watch the race.

“But I have listened to it on the radio.

“It was an incredible win. John Moore was pretty confident leading into the race.”

While the New Zealand businessman’s busy work schedule hasn’t allowed him to grab a moment to view the race yet, he is excited for what he has in store after being overjoyed by Beauty Generation’s last-start win in the Gr.2 BOCHK Wealth Management Jockey Club Mile (1600m).

“Certainly his last race he looked absolutely amazing and how he managed to get himself in the position he did to win the race, he’s just pure class,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to watching this race too when I get the opportunity.”

Tomlinson, who breeds from approximately 40 mares each year, rates Beauty Generation as the best horse he has bred and said he appreciates the difficulty behind breeding such a quality animal.

Tomlinson said Beauty Generation’s existence came about by chance. As an investor in several stallions in New Zealand, he was on the lookout for a number of lease mares for one of those stal-

He happened across Stylish Bel, a Bel Esprit mare, who he thought would be an ideal mating for the stallion.

“I was short of mares and Stylish Bel was a mare that we leased and on pedigree we felt that she was right for Road to Rock,” he said.

“It’s great (to have bred such a good horse), we know how hard it is to do it and I’m just lucky enough to have been involved in the breeding of the horse.

“He’s quite amazing and at the moment he could be one of the

better horses to come out of New Zealand for some time, which is great for New Zealand and the breeding economy.”

Tomlinson sold Beauty Generation through Highden Park’s 2014 New Zealand Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale draft for $60,000 to Kiwi supermodel Kylie Bax under her Hermes Syndications banner.

The son of Road to Rock was initially trained in Australia by Anthony Cummings, where he raced as Montaigne, and was runner-up in the Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) before he was sold to Hong Kong.

He has thrived in the Asian racing jurisdiction, winning four Group One races and more than $HK60million ($NZ11.3 million) in prizemoney, and was crowned Hong Kong Horse of the Year last season.

While Tomlinson’s busy work schedule hasn’t allowed him to fly up to Hong Kong to witness any of those victories, he was quick to block out his calendar for the Dubai World Cup meeting in March after Beauty Generation was nominated for the Gr.1 Dubai Turf (1800m).

A little-known former New Zealand pacer has emerged as the key player in the $500,000 Inter Dominion Pacing Final.

Because while former Southland pacer Galactic Star has had a top class career in West Australia, he would rarely have been on the radar of most New Zealand punters, even the serious harness racing players, until this Interdom series in Victoria.

Yet after drawing the ace for Saturday night’s 2760m final at Melton, the attitude of his connections could decide the race.

Galactic Star won his first night heat using blazing gate speed and has been very good when placed in his subsequent two heats. But his impact on the final outcome has been boosted enormously by him drawing barrier one.

If driver Ryan Warwick wants to stay in front that will mean no shot at the lead for key front line runners Pat Delight (barrier three), Spankem (five) or Tiger Tara (seven). It would almost certainly mean plenty of pressure to try and break him and potentially bring a horse like series points leader Cruz Bromac into contention after he fared poorly in the draw, copping the second line.

A bunch makes its way down the road during the Tinwald Cycling Club’s weekly race on Sunday.

Chris Reid’s hard work on the bike paid dividends on Sunday when he took out the Tinwald Cycling Club’s McIntosh Group 60km handicap event around the Blackbridge block.

Within in excess of 60 riders going to the line, the racing was spirited, with trophies and cups up for grabs in memory of life members and long-time supporters, broth-

ers Eddie and Chris Ward.

Reid and his co-markers worked hard to find the front mid-race and settled into a solid rhythm to keep the chasing groups at bay.

Reid was too strong in the charge to the line, securing the major spoils from Craig Roulston and Keith Johns.

Marty Cuttle produced his best race of the season to storm into

fourth place with Nigel Chatterton and Shona McGrath rounding out the top six.

Scratch rider Bailey O’Donnell covered the distance in a quick 79.05 minutes to claim the fastest time honours, while Rinze Schuurman and Brad Hudson secured second and third time respectively.

Next week club championship titles will go on the line around the Wakanui Beach block.
