A controversial billboard which had drawn wide criticism from the public has been mysteriously removed, much to the surprise of the organisation who had it installed. The signage, which had been put on private land among other advertising boards on the western side of State Highway 1 through Tinwald, was the subject of a number of calls to the Guardian late

last week, but upon inspection yesterday it was no longer there. And Greenpeace, the organisation behind the sign, knew nothing about its removal. The billboard took a direct shot at two rural-based businesses with strong footprints in Mid Canterbury and pointed a finger at them as a main reason behind the pollution levels in our rivers. The sign was succinct in its message stating simply that both Ravensdown and Ballance pollute rivers through their

products and services and it also carries the hashtag #toomanycows. A Greenpeace spokesperson said last night that they had no knowledge of the advertising being removed and that they would be making contact with the billboard company to have it put back in place – as soon as possible.
