Night of mayhem has court sequel A night of mayhem in the Ashburton CBD in February resulting in at least six serious assaults led to a court hearing for two young men this week. Te Hira Reihana Carroll, 23, and his brother Joe Jiga Reihana Carroll, 20, appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court this week to defend charges of assaulting and obstructing police on February 1, 2015. At the end of the hearing, which took a day and a half, Judge Maze reserved her decision to allow time to evaluate the evidence. She will deliver her findings on August 29. The court was told the brothers travelled to a local nightclub after drinking at home earlier in the evening, in the company of two others. Following an incident at the nightclub, in which two people were alleg-

edly left lying on the floor, the brothers, neither of whom were involved in the assault, left separately. Later, at about 3am they made their way toward West Street. Meanwhile, Ashburton police constable Dominic Grinter and his partner constable Guy Atkinson were notified of a fight on East Street outside Dick Smith’s former premises. Mr Grinter gave evidence of seeing a person hit a man, leaving him unconscious on the footpath. Another man also lay unresponsive on the footpath. When confronted, the alleged assailant punched Mr Grinter on the chin resulting in a four-centimetre gash. The man then fled south on East Street. At this point the story differed. Mr Grinter said a man he identified as Te Hira Carroll pushed him toward a near-

by bike stand as he attempted to chase the alleged offender. As Mr Grinter attempted to resume the chase he was stopped by Joe Carroll who he alleged stepped in front of him and held his vest in an effort to obstruct him. Mr Atkinson responded by pepper spraying Joe Carroll causing temporary blindness. He said Te Hira Carroll responded by grabbing his brother from behind in an attempt to pull him away. He too was pepper-sprayed before Mr Atkinson attempted to run down the initial assailant.
