‘Our front door slammed shut’ BY SUE NEWMAN

If the beneficiaries of Ashburton’s i-SITE are businesses, then perhaps they should be paying to keep its doors open, says mayor Donna Favel. She floated the idea at a heated meeting yesterday that saw Experience Mid Canterbury’s (EMC) annual meeting held against a background of simmering discontent at the closure of the Ashburton i-SITE. EMC decided to close the information site because it was losing money – $31,000 last year – and that closure was greeted with howls of outrage from the community with a petition mounted and a public rally held. At yesterday’s meeting, EMC board chairman James Urquhart kept the lid on i-SITE discussions until the annual meeting wrapped up and then the floodgates opened. Many of the 60-plus people at the meeting that usually attracts fewer than 20 people, were there to tell EMC they wanted the i-SITE to reopen. That it made a loss was immaterial, providing information was a service, many said. As a council-controlled organisation EMC was liable and accountable to the council, Urquhart said. “They give us an agreed amount of money. Of course we’ll continue to work to see if we can get more money, that’s our job. We sit down four times a year with councillors

and the CEO and talk about what we’re doing, where the money is being spent and we ask whether they’re happy with what we’re doing.” The decision to review the iSITEs and close Ashburton because of the changing way people obtained travel information, came on the back of a council commissioned review of EMC. Its recommendations were passed on to the EMC board. “The world has changed the way people are sourcing their information and we have to base our decision on facts, not emotions and the facts show there was a declining number of people coming through the i-SITE’s doors,” Urquhart said. For its $386,000 council grant, through its marketing strategies EMC generated a $171 million tourist spend in the last financial year. The council came in for heavy criticism for not providing EMC with enough money to promote the district and the i-SITES in Methven and Ashburton. And that prompted Favel to suggest businesses could pay a targeted rate to reopen the centre or council could add the cost on to general rates. “But we are constantly asked to keep rates low. Do you want an increase in rates spent on roads or on an i-SITE?” she said. When asked if he was given more money would he reopen the Ashburton site, Urquhart kicked for touch.

We have to do what we believe is right as an organisation and we appreciate this won’t please everyone. If we tell council we’re having losses, we get hammered. We have to look to the future.” The board accepted there was a demographic that had not changed and would not source information via the internet, Urquhart said. That demographic was well represented and quite vocal at yesterday’s meeting. “It’s an unfortunate perception with a lot of people that you’ve slammed the doors on tourism. Our front door, our welcome mat has

been slammed shut,” Peter McQuarters said to a round of applause. “I understand EMC doesn’t have enough money. It needs to go back to the council. Why do we have to lead the way in closing our i-SITE, it’s not a good look.” (more applause). Tony Todd, who led a large public rally against the i-SITE’s closure said he believed personal agenda had come into play around the council table when closure decisions were made. Earlier reports had indicated the iSITES were good value for the money invested and that the decision to review the sites was fundamentally a council directive. “We had three reports and it seemed council needed to keep going until it got a recommendation to close the i-SITES. The question is, do

you think the council is adequately funding EMC to allow it do its job in a professional manner, including the i-SITES?” The answer wasn’t a simple yes or no, Urquhart said. “I’m not going to lie, yes, we’d like more money.” The council is reducing EMC’s grant by $10,000 a year over 10 years and that was why it was constantly forced to review its business. “We have to live within our means,” he said. “So EMC is the fall guy for the council.” Todd said. It was easy to fire questions and criticism at the council and the board but the decision that was made was believed to be the right one for the community and for ratepayers, Urquhart said.

When Tony Todd speaks out for a local cause, I listen T

ony Todd’s a nice guy. He oozes humility, decency and charm. He’s a local identity who’s successfully run, for probably 50 years, an iconic local retail store. He also spent many, many years on the board of the Ashburton (Licensing) Trust, and served time as its chairman. When Tony speaks out for a local cause, I listen. Yesterday, I attended the AGM of Experience Mid Canterbury (EMC). A strong crowd turned up, not so much to hear about the highly commendable year’s work EMC general manager Bruce Moffat and chairman James Urquhart proudly reported on, but to again express feelings about the closure of the Ashburton i-SITE. And feelings and emotions were still raw. EMC’s Moffat and Urquhart spoke of a year where our district experienced exponential growth in tourism. They also spoke of declining numbers using our i-SITE. It’s a funding issue said Urquhart. We are council funded and

losses have been incurred from operating the i-SITE, he said. Urquhart’s a smart man, but when he was challenged on if funding was not the issue, would his board have made the same decision, he stuttered, and responded with a cautious political reply, after all mayor Favel was present and had yet to speak. Then our mayor took to the floor and attempted to take charge; appearing rattled, she used a common ploy and turned the crowd’s calls of extra funding back on them – “Do you all want a special levy on local businesses?” she asked. Tony was left with the last say, which was a similar tack to the impassioned plea he made to the 4-500 at the public meeting on the chequerboard, several weeks

ago. I know, like Tony, a business cannot sustain losses for too long; but an earlier decision of council to reduce EMC’s funding by $10,000 a year over 10 years, has effectively begun to strangle it, and forced its board to make a snap, short-term business decision. The i-SITE must go. And it has. The EMC’s board is blessed with talented and skilled people. Bruce Moffat appears a gem. EMC is experiencing unparalleled success. My feeling yesterday was the board was not at all convinced closure of the i-SITE was the right decision. It was not in the best interests of fostering further tourism to our district, after all, tourism is booming. It’s part of a bigger picture. There are many parts that go to make up this whole. And one is to have a fully functional i- SITE operating in our down town. It’s not too late, mayor Favel. Listen to your constituents, your ratepayers. I haven’t experienced such highly charged feelings around our town for a long time.

Ashburton’s new information centre is being established in the public library where there will also be free wi-fi available. Old Ashburton High School bell rings out again BY KATIE TODD

A familiar soundbite from times of old has returned to echo through Ashburton College. More than five decades since the original Ashburton High School bell last tolled, it has been restored and mounted on a wooden stand for use at special events and assemblies. The restoration project utilised the brains of the student executive, the expert handiwork of hard technology teacher Chris Thompson, and recycled materials from the school’s science block renovations in 2011. “Everything in it has got a connection with the college,” Thompson said. The bell was used at Ashburton High School to signal a change in periods, but ceased to be used when Ashburton High School merged with Hakatere College in 1965. “It was mounted on a tower, and it used to be the task of a senior student to ring the bell to mark a change of periods,” Thompson said. “I heard one story in which some students climbed up the tower, wrapped cloth around it

so the sound was muffled and no one would hear it … they actually had to get the fire brigade to go up the tower and remove the cloth.” College management administrator Sheena Tyrell said since its redundancy, the bell had floated around the administration block, and had even been used as a doorstop to the principal’s office. Student executive members then came up with the idea of restoring the bell for use at special events, and Renato Poienar drafted a design. “They came and saw me and explained they’d designed a stand but didn’t have time to complete it,” Thompson said. “I decided to create it using timber from the old science block … then they told me it had to be done by November 6.” He said the hardest part was laminating and sorting the usable from non-reusable materials. “That took quite some time.” Thirty-five hours of hard grafting later the bell was ready for unveiling, at this week’s Ashburton College Senior Prizegiving ceremonies. “I’m sure it will go on for another 50 years,” Thompson said.

An environmental report might condemn the wastewater and stormwater systems in many New Zealand towns and cities as woefully inadequate, but that does not describe Ashburton’s infrastructure, a local body engineer says. The climate change report makes it clear that ageing infrastructure would be under pressure to cope with the strain of climate change, but the Ashburton District Council’s infrastructure renewals programme meant the town was well placed for the

future, assets manager Andrew Guthrie said. Some local authorities would be looking at a double-whammy in terms of their infrastructure with rising sea levels and flooding putting pressure on ageing networks, the Climate Change and Stormwater and Wastewater report says. Ashburton was well ahead of the game in terms of replacing its water reticulation network, with less than 5 per cent of pipes laid in the 1920s remaining, he said. “Waste water there’s still work to do. Some of the old stuff in Hampstead was laid in the 1940s

and we need to look at this but stormwater, most of that asset only came into being in the last 40 or 50 years, so compared to the other two it’s relatively new.” Ashburton was one of the local authorities that had adopted a policy of spending depreciation money on on-going renewal rather than stockpiling that money, Guthrie said. “Successive councils believed that if you’re going to collect the money you should be doing something with it.” The council had a 30-year plan for infrastructure replacement, but projects where pipes were

first laid in one year could take 10 years to progressively replace. “We have a reasonable idea where we’re targeting our spend each year but there’s always some flexibility in there to deal with bolters, projects that come out of the blue,” he said. The council tags about $1.2 million each year for work on water supply infrastructure and the same amount for waste water. Several roads around Ashburton will become work sites over the summer as new sewer and water mains are laid. Sewer pipes will be replaced on Cameron Street between Grigg

Street and Oak Grove, on Creek Road between Middle Road and Queens Drive and Elizabeth Street from Oak Grove west for two or three blocks. The council has also awarded a $1 million contract for work that will see water pipes that are more than 50 years old replaced on sections of Nelson, Princes and Victoria Streets in Ashburton and Chapman Street in Methven. A new water pipe connection will also be installed in Tarbottons Road. This work is scheduled to start on Tuesday and is due to be completed by the end of April.

Rare river bird numbers set to soar Two species of endangered birds that breed in the upper Rakaia and Rangitata Rivers have been given a survival boost thanks to $100,000 of predator control funding over the next five years. The funding will be used to monitor traps set to catch predators including stoats, rats, hedgehogs, and ferrets, along the river banks. The vulnerable wrybill and the endangered black-fronted tern are already benefiting from work done to date, with Wrybill survival increasing from 46% to between 60 - 80%. Of 71 black-fronted tern nests monitored, 36 yielded hatchings. The survival rate in an area with no predator control was zero. The funding was granted by the Ashburton Water Zone Committee from it’s Immediate Steps biodiversity fund, with support from external partners. A group of at-risk young teens is being given a second chance at education thanks to an innovative new programme running at Ashburton College. Concerned that a small number of students were on the fast-track to exclusion, principal Ross Preece began looking for new ways to keep those 13 and 14-year-olds engaged in learning. “I’d identified a group of kids who were struggling to cope in the mainstream environment where they were changing classrooms during the day and had a variety of teachers. In a class of 25 they were struggling academically because their home or social issues were making them very unsettled,” he said. Preece knew that without some form of intervention the school would be forced to exclude the students, setting them up to become society’s problem in the future. “The traditional model works for most students; these are not most students,” he said. Drawing on past experience where he’d worked in a home room at a previous school, Preece decided to create a programme he called kohanga (nest) that would see the struggling Year nine and 10 students work as one group with one teacher every school day. The programme sees students study literacy, numeracy and ICT skills in the morning and work in a range of other out-of-the-classroom activities in the afternoon. “Their teacher is also free to give them whatever social skills they need, real life skills to cope. As a group they lack those skills. For most of their lives they’ve been in flight or fight mode. This is about trying to set up something at the top of the cliff rather than the ambulance at the bottom which would have been exclusion,” he said. And it’s working. One student had attended school only 17 per cent of the time in term one but

The class was established at the start of term two with eight students. All eight are still there, still at school. Without kohanga, most, if not all, would have been excluded, Preece said. Now they’re making progress academically with some of the Year 10 students likely to return to the mainstream Year 11 classroom next year, all are learning social skills and are showing a sense of pride in their achievements. “Yes there’ve been hurdles – we

had no money, no facility and no teacher and yes it’s been challenging and we’ve had to adjust the programme because some of our original ideas didn’t work but the boys are all still there.” Advance Ashburton Foundation helped fund a teacher, Lindsay Abbott who had extensive experience working with disruptive youth in Australia, the school’s unused netball pavilion became the kohanga base and the college juggled its books to fund a teacher aide. Not every student in kohanga will be reintegrated into mainstream education and those who

cannot will have the option of the alternative education programme. “The overriding goal of this programme is to keep the kids engaged. If we can support these kids now, in five years’ time they’ll be a positive contributor to society rather than a menace,” Preece said. “This is small beer compared to what it costs to keep someone in youth justice or criminal justice for a year.” A mentoring option may be looked at next year where an adult would take one of the students on an activity such as fish-

ing or out on a farm, he said. “Most of these kids just want a chance. For a lot of them, having a positive role model, a male, might be a rarity in their lives. Talk to these kids and all they want is to have a happy life.” Feedback from parents was positive, with one telling Preece if the programme had been running when he was at school he wouldn’t have been excluded at 13. The programme is now in its third term and will continue next year but the issue of how it’s funded remains its biggest challenge.

Spark’s East Street store closed – for now By Sue NewmaN

The doors to Ashburton’s Spark store have been closed because the East Street building does not meet the company’s health and safety requirements. How long the store remains closed will depend on the amount of work required to bring the building up to Spark’s policy standard for earthquake resiliency, media spokesperson Ellie Cross said. “This closure is definitely temporary as Spark remains committed to being in town; it’s a case of doing the work that needs to be done,” she said. The closure has come as Spark undertakes a national audit of stores in keeping with its health and safety policy. “Unfortunately, we’ve identified that the store does not satisfy the Spark policy standard for earthquake resiliency, so it has been temporarily closed for

the safety of our staff and customers. “Our policy standard is more stringent than government building requirements, so we are making these closures by choice rather than by necessity.” Spark accepted the closure would cause some inconvenience for customers, but there

were a number of options that could be used for people needing assistance, including a live chat service, she said. The option of opening in another location was being looked into and this could be a temporary or permanent move, depending on the work required in the East Street store.

“We’re very conscious that in a smaller town it’s super obvious when a store closes and we have staff in there now assessing what needs to be done,” Cross said. Until the store reopened in an alternative location customers would need to visit the Christchurch store if they needed faceto-face customer contact. In the meantime, staff are being relocated where possible or being assigned work that can be completed remotely, she said. “We’d prefer not to have to close these stores so close to Christmas, but we hope that this announcement demonstrates our commitment to putting the safety of our staff and customers first.” Cross said Spark would provide updates on the East Street store assessment and the option of opening in a temporary location as soon as possible. Spark’s Timaru store has also closed.

The Mayfield Lions Club and Mayfield Playcentre are joining forces to mark 150 years of collective history with a nifty new addition to town and a fun-filled fair. On December 10 the Lions are celebrating a centenary of “Lionism” worldwide, while the Mayfield Play Centre is ticking off 50 years of service. The fair will take place at the Mayfield Domain, where the Mayfield Lions are unveiling their centenary project – a rebuilt domain entrance. Lion Neil Blake said the project had taken around $28,000 and three months of work. “The Lions were originally founded in America and they’ve asked each club around the world to come up with a project to celebrate 100 years,” he said. “We decided we wanted to make the entrance to the domain a bit friendlier.” He said the old gateway was too narrow for many vehicles and the idea to rebuild it had generated a lot of support from the local community. The new stone gateway has been created using local greywacke and is the handiwork of a local stonemason.

Synthetic drugs blamed for death A man is dead after allegedly taking synthetic drugs. The 36-year-old Hutt Valley man’s death comes after news that 11 people have been hospitalised this month in the Wellington area after possibly using synthetic drugs. There have been 17 incidents linked to synthetic drugs since November 1 in the Kapiti-Mana area alone. Police, along with the Armed Offenders Squad, yesterday executed a search warrant at an address in Porirua in relation to the supply of psychoactive substances, and say a man and a woman are helping them with their inquiries. Police remain at the address, which is the subject of an ongoing search. Police have already seized a large amount of synthetic drugs from addresses in the Hutt Valley and wider Wellington district and have arrested a number of people. Ricky May is going into Cup Week without the expectations of being a favourite.

May-day! May-day! New Zealand Trotting Cup Day and Ricky May go together like peas and carrots. The most successful driver in the history of New Zealand harness racing’s greatest race, May has made it his own. This year though, it’s different. After 13 years of having incredible horsepower in front of him, this year he’s got outsiders. Guardian editor, Matt Markham caught up with him ahead of one of the busiest weeks of the year.

up Week 2017 is going to be very different for Ricky May. Not different in the fact that he will still be out on the track at Addington, doing battle in some of the greatest harness racing events of the season – but more for the fact that he will be doing it without the amount of horsepower he is used to having at the ready. Since 2004, the Methven horseman has had the services of the first, or in two cases, second favourite in one of the major group one races of the week. This year, his best chance is in the New Zealand Trotting Free-For-All on Tuesday where he will drive Everybody Knows at odds of $14-to-one. “I’ve been pretty lucky when you look back at it all,” May said during the week. “The list of horses I have been able to drive in some of those major races is a

pretty impressive list. “It’s going to be a bit harder this year though.” His chances took a hefty blow when superstar trotter, Monbet, was sidelined with injury last month, losing May the chance to keep his run of favoured runners going for another 12 months. “He would have been the drive of the week for sure, but that’s racing, you’ve got to take the good with the bad.” In Tuesday’s New Zealand Trotting Cup, he’ll drive Seel The Deal for Greg and Nina Hope. An up-and-coming stayer with plenty of potential, it’s a hard ask for the horse against the might of a horse like defending champion Lazarus, as well as a hoard of other runners from the leading stable of Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen. “He’ll need all the luck in the world. And probably then a little bit more.

“But if he managed to land three deep on the fence or something like that, he’d be a wee chance of running into third or fourth if he’s on song.” And it’s a similar case for Everybody Knows. May’s pretty sure that if the stars happen to align he’s just the sort of horse to make the most of a gifted opportunity. The 11-race winner looked much more like it when bursting past to win at Addington last Friday night, which was another step forward from his placing in the Ashburton Trotters’ Flying Mile. Prior to that there had been some ordinary performances from the usually consistent trotter, but May was heaping the blame for those efforts on himself. “I drove him bad a couple of times, not the way he probably goes best. “We got left three wide one night at

Addington, which isn’t really his go in that grade. “He could do it lower down the grades, but not against the good ones. “But he’s bounced back well and feels as good as ever, so with a good trip he’s the sort of horse who could make the most of a run three back on the fence or something.” After they produced the quinella in the race last year, you wouldn’t bet against the Hope stable being able to pull a rabbit out of the hat with Everybody Knows. “He’s got the speed to sit off them and try and run on strongly, but we will need that little bit of luck to go our way.” And while he might not have a favourite in his arsenal, skill goes a long way on the biggest of days and it’s a proven fact that there are few better at excelling than Ricky May.

Lauriston girl lands starring role

Lauriston-born thespian Megan O’Reilly is starting to make a splash in the tough Auckland theatre scene. Tonight the curtain will close on her latest show, Sweet Charity – in which she has played the lead role. Guardian reporter Katie Todd caught up with her.

O

n her way into the world of the performing arts, Lauristonborn Megan O’Reilly recounts a memorable moment. A workmate at SprayMarks Ashburton asserted that acting couldn’t be more than “just a hobby”. Megan quietly resolved to prove him wrong. Several years down the track, the bubbly and self-assured 27-year-old is doing exactly that. With a degree in performing arts under her belt, she’s now negotiating the Auckland theatrical scene. This month she stepped onto the Spotlight Theatre stage for her biggest role to date – as Charity Hope Valentine in Sweet Charity. Megan said the role has been the “real boost in confidence” she needed. “I’m stoked. I was very shocked to get it. It’s my first lead role.” The play follows the plight of Charity as she works as a dance hostess in New York and is strung along in a series of unsuccessful relationships. Despite her luck, Charity remains the eternal optimist. “Charity is kind of a triple threat – singing, dancing, and performing,” Megan said.

“She’s a cool character with a cool outlook on life.” The show is Megan’s debut for Manukau Performing Arts and the end product of two-and-a-half months of thrice-weekly rehearsals. It ran from October 28 to November 11, and among those eagerly watching were Megan’s Mid Cantabrian family. The last time they saw Megan on stage was seven years ago in Ashburton. “I think it would have been when I was in Cats … I’m so excited to show everyone what I’m doing now,” she said. Since moving to Auckland six years ago, Megan has also appeared in performances of Jesus Christ Superstar, West Side Story and Hair. But, her success isn’t just limited to showbiz. By day Megan works at Epsom Dental Care in Newmarket, where she has made an unexpected foray into the world of dental prosthetics. “I applied for a job there but I didn’t really know anything – I mean I guess I once had braces …” she laughed. “And after a while they said to me ‘hey, you’re creative, how would you like to train to be a dental technician’?” But high flying Megan hasn’t forgotten her roots (excuse the dental pun). She

credits the work of Mid Canterbury’s Jo Castelow for keeping her passion alive, along with her inspirational two best friends – Newshub reporter Ben Irwin and Newshub camera operator Daniel Pannett. She says aspiring performers in Mid Canterbury have opportunities aplenty to explore their passions – from Children’s Theatre to the Big Little Theatre Company. “If I had to give advice… it would be to get involved in school productions, because those can be really fun.” Just keep doing it. Carry on doing what makes you happy and following your dream, I guess!” Her ultimate dream? To be on TV one day. “I want to give it a good go, but for now I’m just taking small steps to get in,” she said. Watch this space.

Certainty for NZ merino farmers BY TINA MORRISON Merino outdoor clothing company Icebreaker has signed the longest ever supply contract with growers of New Zealand merino wool, worth $100 million over 10 years. The Auckland-based company, which announced last week that it is being bought by US-based VF Corporation, has inked agreements with New Zealand woolgrowers in collaboration with wool marketer The New Zealand Merino Company to ensure it has long-term supply of the fibre. Pricing will be at a premium to market prices to recognise long-term grower loyalty and to enable Icebreaker to use farm imagery and

storytelling in its global marketing campaigns, Icebreaker said. The company’s link with New Zealand merino wool goes back to 1994 when founder Jeremy Moon tried on some prototype thermal merino clothing that had been developed by a merino sheep farmer on Pohenui Island. Today its clothing is sold in 47 countries through wholesale, branded retail and e-commerce platforms and merino wool is in hot demand by manufacturers worldwide. For Icebreaker, the new contracts give it security of supply of the fibre and provide end consumers with a link back to growers, enhancing its brand. New Zealand sheep farmers benefit from the deal by gaining certainty

to underpin production, avoiding the potentially volatile spot market pricing for commodities. NZ Merino Company chief executive John Brakenridge said the contract is a further endorsement of its business model. “In partnership with Icebreaker and our growers, we have pioneered forward wool fibre contracts to provide greater price certainty and stability,” Brakenridge said. Last year, The New Zealand Merino Company heralded the signing of a five-year $45 million deal to supply fine merino wool to Italian luxury fabric manufacturer Successori Reda, which was at the time its longest-ever contract. – NZME

TVNZ chief executive Kevin Kenrick received a pay bump of more than $200,000 and is now earning nearly $1.4 million a year despite the company’s 89 per cent fall in profit. The state broadcaster’s annual report was tabled in Parliament yesterday, revealing its top-paid employee earned between $1.35 and $1.36m. A TVNZ spokeswoman confirmed this was Kenrick, who earned about $1.2m in the 2016 financial year. The latest annual report, to the year to June 2017, shows that an un-named “former employee” was the next highest paid employee, earning $890,001 to $900,000. The report revealed 44 current and two former employees earned $100,000 to $110,000; 40 current employees earn $110,001 to $120,000; and 25 current and four former employees were paid $120,001 to $130,000. Forty-six current and former employees earned over $200,000 in FY2017.

Right idea, just the wrong place Matt Markham

I

t was the right idea and for the right reasons, but perhaps at the wrong place and at the wrong time. Like many others yesterday I attended the Experience Mid Canterbury AGM, hoping to gain some clarity in the decision behind closing the Ashburton i-SITE. I’ll state from the outset here that I’m neither against its closure nor whether it stays open. I’ve said it before, I’m from the technological age, so I don’t see a purpose for them in my life so it’s not a major impact for myself, either way. So, what I wished to acquire from the meeting was more knowledge to have a better understanding of why? Unfortunately, I think emotion got in the way. The sole purpose of the event was for the Experience Mid Canterbury group to hold their AGM, but you could tell from the outset that wasn’t why the people were there. They wanted answers, they wanted action and they wanted some accountability. Yet none of it was really directed at EMC – instead, the Ashburton District Council took the flak. At some points it got quite downright embarrassing and awkward. The constant interjections of a couple of individuals who felt it their right to interrupt an AGM was rude and uncalled for. Yes, we get there is passion. But at least wait until the opportunity to speak is given. I walked out of the meeting thinking long and hard about what had unfolded. I commend Tony Todd for continuing to challenge the council on the i-SITE closure decision and his call for the building to be reinstated while a full consultation process with the public is completed. But, the messages that were being hammered out yesterday from the public weren’t best heard at the AGM of EMC. They would be better directed in the public forum at the next meeting of the Ashburton District Council. That’s where the emotion lies. Not so much with EMC, but with the council for their apparent failure to see the decision as the wrong one and also not seeing it worthwhile interjecting and stopping the process. Whether that’s right or wrong is for another debate. For now, the i-SITE is closed and it’s hard to see that changing in the near future. Tony isn’t giving up the fight though, so not all is lost.

Making a virtue of necessity T

he National Party seems to be making the best of a bad job. The dust of defeat has mostly settled round their well-heeled shoes though there are still whorls of frustration and resentment about, reluctant to die down. “What on earth are we doing on the Opposition benches? “is a cry, borne on the northwest breeze, I have heard from Wellington. As the now long retired but muchloved tennis star, John McInroe, used to holler when penalised in any way, so now the vexed National Party. “Are you kidding me?” Defeat’s like that; astonishment quickly followed by bewildered incredulity. However, “the grin and bear it” stage may now be beginning to kick in. In politics, at least, resentment has only a limited life span. The National morale-raiser will be saying something along these lines: “Come on chaps; MMP may have done the dirty on us, in particular that old renegade Winston Peters, but let’s face it, we’re the largest Opposition Party in NZ history so should be able to make life pretty difficult for that rabble opposite. “For a start their whips are going to have to be very much on the ball to ensure they always have the numbers available to defeat us when we challenge them. Those numbers are close at the best of times and with our superior savvy about the ways of parliament it surely shouldn’t be beyond our collective knowledge

No room at the inn T

wo thousand years ago a heavily pregnant young woman and her husband were desperately seeking some accommodation and a place to give birth to her child in the town of Bethlehem. To their dismay, they were greeted with “No vacancy” signs and closed doors at every attempt to find something, anything, to stay in. There was to be “no room in the inn” for them that night, and they had to make do with a stable. The rest is history, as they say. But have you ever been stuck for accommodation? I mean, as in desperate for somewhere safe to lay your head. I have slept in a few airports, due to inconvenient connections or delayed flights. But at least at those times, there was a roof over my head, a toilet to use and access to drinking water as a minimum.

However, wandering over the nearby hill revealed the beauty of a picturesque panorama of Windermere emerging from the mist. LETTERS ing a family break-up, domestic violence, or a genuine emergency. Sometimes it’s as a result of poor choices, or bad behaviour that has become unacceptable to a landlord. Whatever the reason, it doesn’t change the fact of the desperation for a roof over their heads. When children are involved, or people have health needs, it’s no time to play the blame game. That can be addressed later, as the matter at hand is finding somewhere safe and warm to house someone. Therefore, it’s been heartening to see the recent project from Presbyterian Support come to fruition, providing some affordable social housing. Still more needs to be done at several levels, but as always, it’s a challenge to find the goodwill from within the community, to

actually make something work. The people who present as those just needing a hand-up, rather than a hand-out, are the easier category to get alongside and help. Maybe those of us with a spare room could make that available, with suitable vetting of course, from time-to-time. The harder category of people to find a suitable solution for are those who present as a little less socially acceptable, maybe lacking some character traits or with addiction issues. We’re not big enough here to have our own City Mission functioning for the desperate. So, sadly for some, there may continue to be “no room at the inn” for them, unless a whole new bunch of modern day “good samaritans” see and act on the need in an appropriate way. Saudis held over corruption Dozens more people have been taken into custody by Saudi authorities, bringing to 201 the number detained in a sweep that investigators say has uncovered at least $US100 billion in corruption. Saudi critics and experts have called the unprecedented purge of top princes and businessmen a bold and risky move by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman aimed at consolidating power as he casts his eye toward the throne, sidelining potential rivals and dismantling alliances built with other branches of the royal family. The sweep comes at a time of increased tensions between Saudi Arabia and its main regional rival, Iran, over the ongoing conflict and suffering in Yemen and a newly erupting political crisis in Lebanon. Saudi Attorney General Saud al-Mojeb said 208 people had been called in for questioning, and that seven were released without charge,

UN to investigate Burundi war crimes A formal investigation into alleged war crimes in Burundi got the green light from the International Criminal Court (ICC), just weeks after the east African country withdrew from the UN body. There was “a reasonable basis to proceed with an investigation in relation to crimes against humanity,” including murder, rape and torture between 2015 and 2017, the court, which sits in the city of The Hague, said in a statement. “The Chamber noted that, according to estimates, at least 1200 persons were allegedly killed, thousands illegally detained, thousands reportedly tortured, and hundreds disappeared,” the statement continued.

Burundi became the first country to withdraw from the ICC last month, with the government accusing the organisation of bias and saying it only goes after African leaders. Other African nations have made similar complaints, with both Gambia and South Africa having threatened to leave. Burundi was plunged into a political crisis in 2015 after President Pierre Nkurunziza decided to run for a third term. According to Human Rights Watch the security forces have since been “responsible for numerous killings, disappearances, abductions, torture, rape, and arbitrary arrests”. – DPA

The stunning purge began last weekend, initially catching 11 princes and 38 officials, military officers and business leaders. They are being held at five-star hotels.

The 32-year-old crown prince, who is the son of King Salman and is popularly known by his initials MBS, is leading the investigation as head of a newly formed anti-corruption committee. Among those detained are billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal and two sons of the late King Abdullah, including Prince Miteb, who had headed the powerful National Guard. Several years ago, he was considered a contender for the throne and was recently believed to be opposed to MBS becoming crown prince. An estimated 1700 individual bank accounts have been frozen. “The potential scale of corrupt practices which have been uncovered is very large,” alMojeb said, adding that based on investigations in the past three years, at least $100 billion has been misused through corruption and embezzlement. – AP

Oldman marries again Gary Oldman has married for the fifth time. The 59-year-old British actor married art curator Gisele Schmidt at the Beverly Hills, California home of his friend and manager Doug Urbanksi, Urbanksi said. Oldman confirmed his marriage in an interview, saying he’d done it “quietly”. Urbanksi said Oldman had known Schmidt for four or five years and the wedding included several dozen friends. A judge finalised Oldman’s divorce from his fourth wife two years ago, according to court records. Oldman, known for the Harry Potter and Dark Knight franchises, is currently promoting his role as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in director Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour.

Church to be demolished The pastor of a small-town Texas church that was the site of a massacre plans to demolish the building. Pastor Frank Pomeroy has told leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention it would be too painful to continue using First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs as a place of worship. A national Southern Baptist Convention spokesman says Pomeroy discussed the plan this week with the denomination’s top executives who had travelled to the community in a show of support. The spokesman says Pomeroy expressed hope he could turn the site into a memorial for the more than two dozen people who were killed last weekend and build a new church on property the church owns. Mike Pence joined Texas Governor Greg Abbott at a memorial service for the victims of the massacre at a small-town Texas church. Pence told the crowd on Tuesday that the shooting was the worst mass shooting at a church in American history and called the gunman “deranged”. Abbott began the service by praying “for healing and for help” and proclaimed Monday a statewide day of prayer. Authorities say Devin Patrick Kelley killed 26 in the attack, including the unborn baby of one of the women slain. Apple released a statement saying it has offered the FBI technical advice after learning the bureau was trying to access Kelley’s mobile phone, but that the FBI had not requested its assistance. – AP

Methven will look to continue their strong hold on the Mid Canterbury senior interclub tennis competition this weekend and remain unbeaten for the season when they tackle Southern today at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre. The Methven side has been the dominant force thus far, winning all three of their fixtures, spearheaded by Koji Kawamata who is yet to taste defeat with six wins from six matches. Playing in the No.2 spot in the

Methven side, he’s also been in strong form in doubles, winning three matches with team-mate, Sam Bubb. Southern, who won their first two matches, but were cleanswept by Fairton last weekend will be looking to bounce back to form with the experienced Jason Feutz playing from the front of their side. The Feutz and Bubb match-up in the singles will be an intriguing encounter. Fairton take on Hampstead in an interesting match with both sides having picked up two wins apiece.

Rhys Cromie has been the main destroyer for Fairton, winning all three of his singles matches in a talented line up of scalps that includes Bubb, Andre van Rooyen and Feutz. Cromie is being ably assisted on the court by Tyler Leonard, the wily Phil Crozier and Erin Connelly-Whyte. Hampstead’s players have chipped away well so far this season and will be looking to continue that form. Jane Brosnahan has been their best performer and alongside Cromie is one of only a few

players unbeaten in singles after three rounds. The weekend’s final match sees Allenton and Tinwald square off. Allenton will be slightly favoured due to the fact they have won a match this season, while Tinwald are still searching for their first victory of the season. Victories this weekend will be important for all sides with next weekend seeing a break from interclub due to Christchurch Show weekend, before the final round of games in the first round of the competition are held on November 24.

The Wallabies have not tasted defeat since 2008 and have lost just one of the last 17 meetings between the two nations. Defending champions Allenton will begin their Pritchard Shield defence this weekend in Mid Canterbury senior cricket when they take on Tech. After sitting out last weekend’s opening round of the competition with the bye, the Allenton lads will be keen to get things back on track when they take to the wicket today after a disappointing T20 competition in which they failed to make the final. That won’t have worried captain, Jeff Naish though. He publicly stated prior to the T20 competition that his side was looking at using the tournament as more of a chance to play some cricket, with the longer format of the game their major targets. “Our focus is probably more on the long form stuff,” he said. Allenton will meet a strong Tech side who will be keen to avenge a defeat at the hands of Methven – for the second week in a row – seven days ago. After posting a disappointing total of 105 runs, they did give themselves a chance with the ball and that may prove to be their biggest asset today.

Callum Gallagher has some handy weapons in his arsenal and his manipulation of rotating his bowlers will be a key part of the match. Jason Morrison will return to the side this week after not being available last weekend which will also aid their chances. Today’s other match will see T20 champions Methven look to continue their good start to the season when they play host to Coldstream at the Methven Domain. Davey Maw has his side firing on all cylinders early doors this season and the challenge will be carrying that form through the entirety with a really good mix of youth and experience that should set them in good stead. Coldstream on the other hand will be at least hoping they can rock up to Methven with a few more players. They managed to field just eight players last week – a concerning number considering it is the early stages of the competition. At their best, with a fully functional side, Coldstream will push any side in the competition particularly if the steadying nature and experience of players like Richard Print and Bo Houston are on form.

Speculation of an impending haircut to domestic cricket’s first-class programme has been scuttled. The 10-round Plunket Shield competition will remain intact for at least next summer and most likely beyond. Although New Zealand Cricket are working their way through a $9.3 million deficit on their books, and the Shield is an expensive exercise, an NZC spokesman said there are no plans to trim it back at least next season. The Shield should be seen as an investment in the game and developing New Zealand firstclass cricketers is paramount. Even if it is an example of a loss leader, it needs to be fostered. Talks of a cutback come as it was revealed NZC will present a $9.3 million loss to its annual meeting next week. That is balanced by incoming revenue from the biggest broadcast rights deal it has secured, with Star Sports India to screen internationals in New Zealand into the subcontinent for the next three years. Put the loss down to significant changes at the International Cricket Council. When the so-called Big Three – India, Australia and England – were pulled back into line by ICC president Shashank Manohar, who led the way back to more equity among member nations, it meant a reworking of the financial model. The goal posts moved on the incoming financial arrangements. In short, that change meant the ICC will be giving NZC $128 million over the 2015-23 period, which is far more than what would have been $88 million. That’s the message to the New Zealand side from former All White Tim Brown, one of the stars of the 2009 playoffs against Bahrain. Brown, who has since found business success with his footwear company AllBirds, played a vital role in midfield in the 0-0 draw in Manama and famous 1-0 win in Wellington which earned New Zealand a place at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. That night in Wellington remains his favourite footballing memory, albeit also the most nerve-wracking. “I’ve never watched the match again – never,” said Brown. “I don’t think I could. It was so much to go through, so tense, that 90 minutes, and the margin of victory was so narrow. “It would make me too nervous. We all knew what was at stake and how it could change in a moment.” But if the match was a pressure

cooker, the lead-up was relatively serene, given the circumstances. “We didn’t want to add pressure to the occasion,” said Brown. “And as a group, we got the tone of the week right.” Former Black Caps skipper Stephen Fleming addressed the team early in the week with a message which really hit home, Brown said. “He emphasised that it would be an emotional rollercoaster but you needed to be incredibly selfish and careful in the management of your energy.” That resonated with Brown, despite the increasing hype around the country. “You had to realise that none of those texts matter, nor those phone calls, nor what the papers are saying,” said Brown. “It’s just about calmly getting through the week and then executing. Fanga’s new Mustang Electric atmosphere Two-time Demon Energy D1NZ National Drifting Championship title winner Daniel Woolhouse (‘Fanga Dan’ to fans and rivals alike) has confirmed that he will wield a newly built Formula Drift-spec RTR Ford Mustang for the upcoming drift season. Woolhouse’s new car will replicate the Monster Energy Mustang that former Formula Drift champion Vaughn Gittin Jr campaigns in the US; complete with a 700kW Roush Yates V8 that red lines at 9,000rpm, left-hand drive, and plenty of carbon-fibre construction. “It’s a dream come true. I’ve been walking around with a smile on my face every day,” Woolhouse said. “It didn’t feel real until I had my hands on the activation car. Then it really hit home about two weeks ago when Vaughn Gittin Jr did a video for us to play at Big Boys Toys. “Even telling you now it’s making me shiver. “I would’ve never dreamed of it. I’m just so stoked to have the support I’ve had from my existing sponsors, they’re so happy for us.” As reported by Driven in September, Gittin Jr will compete at next year’s Leadfoot Festival in Hahei in a newly built RTR Mustang drift car. At the end of that event Woolhouse will take ownership of the new car, where it will then adopt the look of his activation car [pictured]. [CTB] had some ideas around some Mustangs – they happen to be one of my favourite cars,” said Woolhouse. “As that was going on, Sam had started making some noise over in the States with Ford Performance; telling them we were going to be building a drift car and asking them how they could help us and support us with this. “[Ford Performance] got off the phone and rang Ian Stewart – a New Zealander and part owner with Vaughn Gittin Jr of RTR Vehicles. They said ‘these guys in New Zealand are building a drift car for a guy called Fanga Dan’, and Ian said ‘ah, I know who Fanga Dan is. I think I need to make a call to New Zealand ...’ “Things built on from there, and we were officially accepted into the RTR family with Vaughn. My way of explaining it was that we made a quantum leap. We were here, getting ready for next year with our old car. And next minute, everything got flipped upside down and we started fresh.” Headed by Gittin Jr and Stewart, RTR Vehicles are best known for their exploits in motorsport; namely for the former’s wild Ford Mustang Formula Drift weapon, and for the all-wheel drive ‘Hoonicorn’ Mustang that’s featured in several of Ken Block’s precision ‘Gymkhana’ videos, as well as on an episode of Top Gear. But the brand also builds road cars, having just recently revealed their 2018 Ford Mustang RTR at SEMA. Columbian, an Irishman and a Kiwi walked into a stadium in Ecuador (the bars came later). A couple of hours later they left soaking wet but with smiles on their faces, the Kiwi at least not too sure what he’d just been part of or whether he witness anything like it again. That Kiwi was me and at the time, 2001, I was travelling around South America. As luck would have it, while I was in Ecuador the country was hosting the South American Under 20 Football Championships. I managed to see half a dozen games, the first one with a couple of guys I met at the backpackers where I was staying. Although I’d been to plenty of sporting occasions in New Zealand and Australia, including crowds of 90,000-plus at the MCG for one-day cricket internationals and the opening game of an AFL season, but I’d never been to anything in South America before. The ground itself, in a city called Cuenca, would have held no more than 30,000 and two-thirds of that was in the form of the old-fashioned terraces. The result I don’t remember. The occasion and the behaviour of the crowd will stay with me as long as I live. What started off as (I think) as a couple of young guys near us on the terrace throwing a bit of water on a couple of girls walking past escalated pretty quickly. The girls got some water of their own and returned in kind, then others got involved and then soon pretty much everyone on the terraces was involved in the largest water fights I’m ever likely to see. It was the time of the annual carnival festival in South America, so people ex-

pected to get wet. There was no aggro, just plenty of laughter and people having fun. It was an occasion and everyone there wanted to enjoy themselves, which I’m sure they did. Fast forward nine years and I’m at Westpac Stadium in Wellington for the All Whites versus Bahrain game. Again, it was one of those times that will stay etched in my memory. A sold-out stadium yelled and screamed, sang and danced like I’ve never seen a New Zealand crowd do before or since. Quarter of an hour after the game was over the majority of the crowd were still there. They hadn’t moved, not wanting to leave what can only be described as a very special atmosphere. People were still singing and cheering. I took my nephew Hemi, at the time about 10 years old, to the game, thinking it might be a bit of an experience for him. When I dropped him off at my brother’s place about an hour later he asked if it was ok that his ears were still ringing from all the noise. And so to this afternoon’s game. While I’m hoping for an All Whites win, what I want most is a special occasion with an electric atmosphere. Because that’s what it deserves. And that’s what undoubtedly awaits in Lima.

Classic attracts future stars Picture this scenario. It’s 2023, semi-finals day at the US Open in New York, world number one Denis Shapovalov is playing fourth ranked Andrey Rublev and third seed Hyeong Chung meets 8th seed Karen Khachanov. Of course it’s hypothetical but a scenario that is not as farfetched as it may seem to the untrained eye. The four ATP Next Gen stars are all 21 or younger and are this week playing at the inaugural Next Gen Finals in Milan. And they’ve also signed on to play in Auckland’s ASB Classic in January.

It’s a coup for organisers because the quartet is in demand. All four are being touted as future Grand Slam champions. In 2000 Roger Federer and Juan Carlos Fererro graced court six at the then Heineken Open in a first round match in Auckland and there have been numerous future champions who have appeared over the years before they became household names such as Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro six months before winning the US Open. Chung has been compared to a younger version of Japan’s Kei

Nishikori and has cruised into the semi-finals of the Next Gen Finals with an impressive three straight round robin wins. The Korean hits a flat ball with a particularly strong two handed backhand and he’s notched up wins over world number three Sascha Zverev, Gael Monfils, Sam Querrey and David Goffin this year. Khachanov is a big strong guy in the mould of Marat Safin. He made a fleeting appearance in Auckland this year, losing in the first round but the 21 year old has wins over the likes of Kei Nishikori, Giles Simon, John Isner and Tomas

Berdych this year and reached a career high 29 in August. 20-year-old Rublev made the US Open quarter-finals in September and is the highest ranked of the quartet at 37 while Shapovalov is the youngest at 18. He showcased his ability with incredible wins over Nadal and del Potro at the Montreal Masters in August. Tournament director Karl Budge has actively pursued the future stars. Breaking down sports clubs by subterfuge E

And big business, for example the liquor industry, sees the law as something in their favour; something to help them make money. And they make a lot more if the punters buy their grog at the pub, instead of going to some clubrooms somewhere, where the profits are fully turned back into that club, for the good of the

But I would be a bit disappointed if their remit included punitive entrapment on a grand scale, as happened to a couple of clubs around these parts in recent times. If there were liquor laws, it wasn’t a major thing because mostly it was self-regulated; very much a family-orientated thing. But in recent years it’s all changed, with the law at the centre of it all. The laws are passed by our

sport, and the club’s members. So they’re quite happy to push for increasing stringency of those laws around clubs, no matter than the law enforcement personnel in each and every town has a very fair idea of who’s the good guys and who’s the bad guys, and which clubs/ pubs/houses might need a bit of special attention at times. There’s some very good people at the outfits like ACADS who are in there to assist the law as well,

There’s various forms of entrapment, most of them seemingly to involve the law enforcement people. And everyone has their own line in the sand over what’s acceptable for the overall betterment of society, and what is something else. (Ed: This is a sports column? Me: Yes Your Honour, the jury will see where I’m going with this.) There’s speed cameras. Generally speaking you can’t complain about them, much as you might like to, but seeing them at the end of a passing lane, when you’ve just got past that plonker who’s been doing 94.7km/h for the past five kilometres, that’s really annoying. Flipside, there’s that woman in Auckland who complained about getting caught again and again and again, by the very same camera, in the exact same place, in their flash new tunnel. The definition of stupidity perhaps? There’s other forms too, and they involve upholding the law by keeping clubs and organisations, particularly sports clubs, in line with the current liquor laws. We all know the landscape has changed dramatically in that arena over the decades. I’m very familiar with the history of one club in particular, which I won’t name, but there always seemed to be lots of Dwyers, O’Gradys, Prendergasts, Hurleys and Morrisons running around. Many years ago the clubrooms was an old house transported to the club’s grounds by a huge effort from club members, and Saturday nights always finished up in a massive sing-song around the piano/guitar, with everyone well-lubricated from

clever team then journeyed up the road to another club, and repeated their cunning plan, which again brought ‘success’. Clubs who have been pinged currently await their sentence; most likely being closed down for a Saturday night next season, and most likely that night will be Club Night, always the biggest night of the year. Action like this brings about a couple of things. The sometimes-strong rapport built up between clubs and the local Police very rapidly erodes, with all the old mistrust of anyone wearing a uniform coming back into vogue in a big way, and that’s a bad, bad thing. The clubs have to spend a great deal of money getting all sorts of licences for people to stand behind the bar, doing exactly what they’ve been doing for years, again money that should be going to more positive things, at a time when funds are harder and harder to come by. And that aforementioned club spirit takes a hammering, as eventually people realise their clubrooms is being transformed into a business before their very eyes, by people sitting in Wellington with no idea of how heartland New Zealand has operated for the past century. We know what people think of the politicians, now for a great many young sportsmen that will extend to the powers that be as they see the Fun Police curtailing their social activities. Is it right that someone, possibly off their own bat, can come up with this ultimately vindictive idea to ‘clean up the clubs’, and put this operation into motion, without any consulation with the locals to find out how things work around here? Something about it smells, and really bad. (Ed, furiously banging his little gavel: Order! The jury will disregard everything it has heard today. Me: Thank you Your Honour, the defence rests).
