For the second time this year Mid Cantabrians woke on Saturday to find their district had been transformed into a winter wonderland.

While Friday afternoon’s thunder, lightning, and hail were somewhat expected, the heavy snow that blanketed much of Mid Canterbury was not.

Thick snow showers fell overnight on Friday and continued into Saturday morning, while sporadic sleet and light snow flurries sent temperatures plummeting yesterday.

Ashburton had a high of just 5 degrees, with early risers waking to a

chilly -3 degrees yesterday morning.

Icy roads and poor visibility made conditions tricky for motorists, prompting a warning from Ashburton police to avoid unnecessary travel and drive to the conditions.

Sergeant Mike Jackson said police were alerted to two weather-related car crashes and received reports of multiple cars sliding off the road.

However most motorists had done their best to drive to the conditions, he said.

Local firefighters were called out to weather-related incidents, but Ashburton chief fire officer Alan Burgess said most proved to be minor.

The polar blast also caused headaches for farmers, according to Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president Willy Leferink.

“It’s certainly inconvenient, and we’re hoping for some warmer weather so we get some grass growth going,” he said.

“Particularly for dairy farmers, there’s no money in the budget for supplements.”

The icy temperatures were also unhelpful for those farmers who had started lambing.

The Waltons regroup for tribute The stars of beloved television series The Waltons are reuniting for a tribute weekend in California. TV family matriarch Michael Learned, Kami Cotler, Mary Beth McDonough, Eric Scott and Judy Norton will be part of the upcoming Waltons Weekend at Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga. Geer portrayed the Waltons family grandfather from 1972 until his death in 1978. The weekend get-together includes a Waltons-themed dinner at Topanga’s Mountain Mermaid, a silent auction and a screening of new documentary Earl Hamner Storyteller. Earl Hamner, Jr created the popular TV series, which ran from 1971 to 1981.

Spice Girls ‘to return’ without Posh The Spice Girls, the most successful girl group in history, are set to reunite without Victoria Beckham, it has been reported.

Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Mel C and Mel B will reform for an international tour next year, according to British newspaper The Sun. 2016 will see the 20th anniversary of the band’s debut single Wannabe, which was released in 1996 and catapulted the five-piece to global stardom. Together Ginger, Posh, Baby, Scary and Sporty sold more than 75 million records and had nine number ones. Their debut album, Spice, made them the fastest-selling British act since the Beatles.

Rudd opens up Embattled rocker Phil Rudd has opened up for a mumbling and expletive-laden television interview. The ex-AC/DC drummer is currently serving out an eightmonth home detention sentence after last month being convicted on charges of threatening to kill and possessing methamphetamine and cannabis. He is now facing an additional charge of breaching his sentencing conditions, by possessing and consuming alcohol, after being arrested at his Harbour Drive home last month. He pleaded not guilty to breaching those conditions at the Tauranga District Court last week. In the interview with 3D reporter Michael Morrah that aired on TV3 last night, Rudd spoke - at times incoherently - of the stress of owning his Tauranga bar, Phil’s Place. Intoxicated patrons were “f****** painful,” he said. His lawyer argued a threatening phone call that landed him before the court was just a burst of anger, and Rudd told 3D his face-to-face apology to the man was accepted.

“I expected to get a discharge without conviction and get on a plane and go straight back to f****** work,” he said. However, his brushes with the law meant he was unable to perform with AC/ DC on their current world tour. Rudd said he was not sure if he would play with the band when they came to New Zealand.

He also showed viewers his expansive luxury car collection and gave other insights into the luxury rock’n’roll lifestyle he affords, including his waterfront mansion. His Ferrari was a fine substitute for a wife, he said.

Call to capitalise on events

There has been a call to action for Ashburton retailers to capitalise on the influx of visitors that big ticket events at the EA Networks Centre will bring.

Yesterday’s Tall Ferns vs Japan basketball game had the honour of becoming the facility’s first international sporting event.

If the centre’s manager Steve Prescott gets his way, it will be the first of many.

With the first big ticket event done and dusted, attention is now turning to how the local economy can capitalise on future events.

Apart from a few larger retailers, many businesses in Ashburton’s CBD close their doors over the weekend.

However Experience Mid Canterbury board chairman Dominic Moran says retailers should view the basketball match as a “call to action”.

Big events mean more visitors, and local businesses needed to capitalise on those opportunities and create and atmosphere in town, he said.

“If there’s going to be more of these events, local business groups can do work, like packaging things together to encourage visitors to stay a bit longer and see what’s around,” he said.

“Sometimes when the first major events happen people can be a bit slow out of the blocks.”

It was always a struggle to “make a dollar”, and capitalising on those opportunities was one way to add extra money into local coffers, he said.

Grow Mid Canterbury chief executive Rob Brawley echoed the call to capitalise on high profile local events.

“We do need to work together and be a bit co-ordinated in having our shops and businesses open and promoting the fact that they are open,” he said.

Mayor Angus McKay said the EA Networks Centre was there to promote the district and bring people to Ashburton, and it would be good for visitors to be able to purchase local goods.

However it was up to individuals to decide how they would take advantage of the opportunities big events provided, he said.

A 500-strong crowd saw the Tall Ferns take on Japan at the EA Networks Centre yesterday. Japan won the encounter 81-73.

International match with local flavour

BY ERIN TASKER International basketball made a successful debut at the EA Networks Centre yesterday when the Tall Ferns took on Japan in an enthralling encounter.

Japan took it out 81-73, to make it three from three and claim the series, but it was a close match which had the 500-strong crowd on the edge of their seats at times, and throwing their voices behind the Kiwi girls.

It was a fully-fledged international sporting event – national anthems and half-time entertainment and all – and organisers will be hoping it’s the first of many international matches to grace the new stadium with its presence.

It was the first big test for the new stadium, and organisers and spectators left happy with how the event panned out.

Extra seating was brought in to accommodate the masses, and there was barely an empty seat in the house as the Tall Ferns gave it their all in an attempt to avoid a series whitewash.

On the sideline, Basketball Mid Canterbury’s Pip Johnson had the role of MC, and it wasn’t always easy. He filled the crowd in on the comings and goings from the court, and tried to bring the crowd in to the action with Tall Ferns chants.

The crowd didn’t need any prompting when the Tall Ferns got it right though, with baskets coming off the back of some stunning team movements being met by cheers and the odd bit of flagwaving, and the Ferns bench players showed how much they wanted it, jumping out of their seats to celebrate their team’s on-court efforts.

The action didn’t stop when the players did, with the quarter breaks filled by some gorgeous wee girls from Dynamic Gymnastic Sports, and half time featuring a game of mini-ball between some of Ashburton’s future Tall Ferns.

It may have been an international match, but it had a real local flavour, with the scorebench full of local faces, local floor-wipers and locals singing the national anthems.

The presentation at the end was also all Mid Canterbury, with Ashburton mayor Angus McKay presenting the Japanese captain with the series trophy – mayoral chains and all – and event manager Pauline Paterson saying a few words on the 60-year anniversary of Basketball Mid Canterbury, and thanking those who had ensured the game went off without a hitch.

In brief Nine arrested Nine men have been arrested in relation to a man who was allegedly kidnapped and assaulted in Christchurch. The Armed Offenders Squad secured and searched two properties, one in Ajax Street and another in Bowenvale Avenue, after a man made a complaint to police that he had been kidnapped and assaulted. From the two addresses, nine men were arrested and charged in relation to the incident.

They will appear in Christchurch District Court tomorrow on charged of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and kidnapping.

Dangerous tin found A tin full of dangerous goods that went missing in Wellington yesterday has been found. Police had issued a warning that a paint tin with dangerous goods had fallen off a light truck in Wellington’s Titahi Bay. The tin was found by a member of the public at 5.30pm on Evans Bay Parade.

Police said the container was intact and has now been returned to its owner.

General operations manager James Urquhart said 43cm of snow fell on the mountain overnight on Friday, and he was expecting more last night.

Keen skiers had to hold off until 11am for the access road to open on Saturday, but perfect conditions meant it was worth the wait.

“It was absolutely amazing for skiing and riding, there’s no doubt about it,” he said.

The mountain was bustling with visitors again yesterday, he said.

“It’s really good, it’s been a good weekend.”

While showers and chilly temperatures are expected to continue today, Metservice meteorologist Stephen Glassey says clear skies are on the way.

“We’re forecasting showers for today but they should clear late in the day, and Tuesday is looking like a fine day.”

Bee losses not from feared disease

A local beekeeper and Federated Farmers don’t believe unexplained bee hive deaths in the upper North Island are because of colony collapse disorder – a feared phenomenon decimating colonies overseas.

Responding to growing media stories where beekeepers and a scientist have raised speculation that colony collapse disorder (CCD) has been responsible for large honey bee colony losses in the Coromandel and Waikato, Ashburton beekeeper Roger Bray said in some cases it was “more likely to be poor beekeeping”.

Colony collapse disorder (CCD) has decimated bee populations in Europe and North America and has been greatly feared by beekeepers worldwide as there has been no cause or treatment found for the phenomenon.

“While there has been bee

losses in NZ, it could be considered a “bit extreme” to start using the term CCD.” Mr Bray said a wet spring meant bees were confined to hives and instead of defecating and depositing gut parasites away from the hive some deposited the gut parasites inside their colonies.

“So in an attempt for the house bees to clean up inside

the beehive, the house bees consume the faecal material and any pathogens and get infected with the gut parasites.”

The infected hives in the Coromandel were found to have “incredibly high” levels of the gut parasite Nosema and another condition called lotmaria passim.

The level of Nosema was sufficient to suggest the bees were extremely sick, he said.

Federated Farmers bee industry group chairperson John Hartnell agreed with Mr Bray and said it was “far too premature” to be waving around statements about CCD at this point.

“It may have just been a very violent storm on us in that particular region last year – which was a combination of a gut parasite issue, weather and the inability of the bee to get out of the hive.”

“I don’t believe it’s CCD. It’s certainly not what they’ve seeing overseas.”

While South Island hive numbers have remained stagnant, there has been a boom in the North Island on the back of high Manuka honey prices with 6000 apiarists expected to be registered by Christmas with around 600,000 hives.

“That’s a massive jump. In the last three years we’ve been averaging 700 new beekeepers a year.”

The inexperience of new beekeepers could be contributing to losses, according to Mr Hartnell who said apiarists need to work for a decade with bees before they see everything.

Federated Farmers has been working to educate beekeepers and has been implementing surveys to find out the extent of bee losses in the North Island, he said.

A fire is still burning in a woodpile three days after it started. The fire started in a pile of recycled timber at Canterbury’s Burwood Resource Recovery Park on Thursday.

Christchurch City Council said the recycled timber stockpile was still ablaze, and most of the timber had been burnt. “The strategy is to allow this material to burn itself out and to ensure there is no potential for the fire to restart in the future,” a council spokeswoman said. She said it could take a few days more for the wood to totally burn through.

“The fire is contained inside earth bunds and patrolling is in place to ensure it stays in the confinement zone. The southerly conditions have helped in taking smoke out to sea.”

More electronic monitoring planned The Government says it will press on with plans to expand the use of electronic monitoring for offenders amid concerns about two high-profile cases in which child sex abusers breached their GPS-tracking conditions.

Convicted child rapist Daniel Livingstone was arrested by police on Friday after removing his electronic anklet in the early hours of Thursday morning.

His case came shortly after Tony

Robertson, another child abuser, was sentenced on Thursday for a murder committed while wearing an electronic anklet.

Parliament is considering a bill that would expand the use of electronic monitoring further - to people who are temporarily released from jail and to those who are on “intensive supervision” conditions in the community. The legislation was backed unanimously at its first stage.

Corrections Minister Sam

Lotu-Iiga’s office said recent events would not affect the bill’s progress. “However, the minister would consider any advice that would improve the bill,” a spokeswoman said.

In the meantime, Corrections were expected to begin an inquiry into Robertson’s offending today, which would review his electronic monitoring conditions.

Labour MP Kelvin Davis was unsure whether Labour would

back the bill when it returned to Parliament.

But he said the high rate of people breaching their electronic monitoring conditions “should be ringing alarm bells” and the policy of using GPS monitoring for ex-offenders in the community needed to be reviewed.

New Zealand First corrections spokesman Mahesh Bindra said he still supported the expansion of GPS tracking, but he wanted additional safeguards to be built

into the law.

Electronic monitoring was introduced in 2006 for people on home or community detention, and was extended to some highrisk criminals in 2012.

The new bill, which is at the select committee stage, would expand the policy to two new sentences.

These were prison sentences of up to two years which had release conditions, and intensive supervision sentences. - NZME

However there was plenty of over-the-top feminine flair on display at Hampstead Rugby Club’s Miss Hampstead event on Saturday night.

The inaugural event was a fundraiser for the club, and saw players donning lipstick and getting in touch with their feminine sides for a good cause.

Organiser Wendy Ritchie said there were plenty of laughs from the 120-strong crowd.

“Mikayla”, aka Michael Ritchie, stole the show in a sparkly purple gown and was later crowned the very first “Miss Hampstead”.

About $2000 was raised from the event, and organisers were keen to revisit the event in the future, she said.

bore springs back to life An old bore sprung back into life in Rotorua city centre yesterday shooting gravel and water 15m into the air and forcing businesses to shut early.

A painter redecorating a shop front said he got a fright when he went to fetch a paint roller and opened a door towards the gushing column of boiling water.

The bore in the service lane between Amohau Street and Eruera Street blasted through the ground yesterday around 2.30pm. It sent dirt and gravel onto nearby roofs and was last night spraying water and steam about 15m into the air.

Pete Beckett was painting the exterior of The Boardroom on Eruera St. “I went out the back and I could hear all this noise,” he said.

“I wondered out and holey moley, there’s a geyser going out here. The noise I’d heard was rocks hitting the roof.”

He said there were other people out the back who told him to go back inside.

“You never know around here, things can go off at any time and you can always smell sulphur. There are pockets all over.”

It might look like a transformer, but really it’s a high tech surgical unit.

The Mobile Surgical Unit rolls into town, much like a caped crusader, opening its doors to those in need.

The 42-tonne blue and yellow truck and trailer unit parks up outside Ashburton Hospital every five weeks, ready to cater to those with appointments.

It’s been visiting Ashburton since 2012, and late last week Health Minister Jonathan Coleman announced the service would have its contract renewed until 2018, to ensure rural patients continue to receive the care they need.

Hakatere Huts resident Rodney Webb is one of more than 80 Mid Canterbury patients the unit has catered to over the past year.

Mr Webb had an operation on the bus in June and said his experience was great.

The 72-year-old had an inguinal hernia, and needed surgery. He went to see his doctor. but was told he could be waiting for up to four months.

However, the following day Mr Webb received a letter saying he was booked in with the Mobile Surgical Unit in a fortnight.

“The thought of it [the bus] initially was strange, but you saw the room and the equipment and you’d never know you were on a bus,” he said.

Before his appointment, Mr Webb met with the surgeon and anesthesiologist at Ashburton Hospital, to discuss his concerns and queries.

One of the country’s most decorated war heroes, Les Munro, was farewelled at the weekend.

The world’s last surviving World War Two Dambusters pilot was commemorated with an honorary flypast that followed his memorial service at Tauranga’s Classic Flyers Aviation Centre on Saturday afternoon.

More than 600 people turned out for the memorial service.

The death of the Squadron Leader on Tuesday made global headlines, and tributes and condolences poured in from around the world.

Granddaughter Chelsea Fielder spoke on behalf of the Munro grandchildren and said her “pop” was a “true patriarch in our family”.

“The mighty totara tree of our family has fallen,” Ms Fielder said. “The branches and leaves have sheltered and protected us...What remains now are the solid roots in the ground, enriched by Pop’s memories.”

Son Graham Munro spoke of his dad as a dedicated and caring man who shaped the lives of him and his siblings.

“The family are very proud of our father. He had long and very successful life. He touched many people in many different ways as he lived his life and expected nothing in return.”

Colleague and friend Dave Muir said “for this man I would have put my hand in the fire.

Farewell friend.”

Stories told about Mr Munro’s life stretched from his upbringing in Gisborne in the 1920s, to his World War Two accolades, to raising a family in the King Country, to his retirement in Tauranga in the 2000s.

Bruce Williams spoke of how Mr Munro was mayor of Waitomo District unopposed for 17 years, saying “I guess he stood for the people and everybody knew that”.

Air Force chief Air ViceMarshal Mike Yardley attended the service with a crew from Wellington.

Museum of Transport and Technology (Motat) chief executive Mike Frawley also attended.

Members of the Air Force, the Royal New Zealand Navy and war veterans stood to attention as Mr Munro’s grandchildren carried their grandfather as the Last Post was played.

Keeping shoppers at home Daisy Hudson

ith yesterday’s international basketball match showcasing our world-class sporting facilities, it’s time attention turned to how we can capitalise on the economic opportunities it presents.

Hundreds of people turned out for the milestone event that marked the first international sporting fixture at the EA Networks Centre.

It was a proud moment for all of those who have poured so much time and energy into creating a facility that will provide many opportunities for a rapidly growing district.

However for the influx of visitors who flooded into town for the big game, there would have been few incentives to linger.

Aside from larger retailers like The Warehouse and Mitre 10, much of Ashburton’s CBD is a ghost town from Saturday afternoons.

Those basketball fans hoping to enjoy a post-match coffee or spot of shopping would have struggled to find anywhere that was open.

It’s a remnant of the past, when Ashburton was a small, rural town that effectively shut down during the weekend.

However with the number of visitors to the district constantly climbing, demand for weekend shopping and entertainment is only going to increase.

While having a bustling CBD in the weekends would certainly help to keep visitors spending, tourism operators also need to come to the party.

Departing Experience Mid Canterbury chief executive Nigel Birt recently told the Guardian that providers need to work collaboratively if they want to stay competitive.

One suggestion has been to create a co-ordinated tourism circuit, where local operators work as a cohesive unit to provide a unique experience for tourists.

Combined with a welcoming retail hub, it could see visitors not only choosing to stay for a coffee, but potentially overnight.

It’s all well and good having a facility that attracts people to our fine district.

However we’re doing ourselves a disservice if we don’t try to keep them here for more than a few hours.

ANZCO I read Saturday’s Guardian of recent accidents at ANZCO. I spent much of two years at ANZCO and found the training and monitoring of health and safety to be of a very high standard.

I’ve spent much of my working life farming, where safety issues will be explained to you but is pretty much policed by the individual, a good life lesson really.

Sadly accidents will happen but just as sadly I don’t think employers and the system should always be getting so blamed.

Best us employees all start becoming a little more accountable and less nameless.

Keep up the good work ANZCO, I think you’re doing more than enough.

eople in the Ashburton District, along with those in every other district in New Zealand, should feel safe in the communities they live in, and they should feel safest in their homes with their families.

Sadly, for some people, this is not the reality.

Despite crime rates in New Zealand falling to the lowest they’ve been since 1978, family violence is deplorably high.

The representatives of social services here in Ashburton District have conveyed to me their concern as no part of New Zealand is immune.

About half of all homicides in New Zealand are a result of family violence, and we have the fifth-highest rate of child abuse and child death in the OECD. This is unacceptable.

We decided to take action last year with a family violence package, and one year on we are making progress across a range of initiatives, such as working on intensive case management, looking into improving information judges receive about defendants and their histories, and exploring the possibility of establishing a family violence criminal disclosure scheme.

Earlier this year, the Ministerial Group on Family Violence and Sexual Violence commissioned a stocktake of family and sexual violence services across all Government agencies.

The stocktake found that while a lot of good work is being done, there is room for improvement. There is duplication of some services and fragmentation of others.

So we are launching a new work programme to ensure government agencies respond better to family and sexual violence.

The Government spends an estimated $1.4 billion each year responding to family and sexual violence, so we want to make sure we are getting it right and providing the best services we

can for families.

We need to take a hard look at the way agencies work together and what improvements can be made to help break the cycle of violence. Laws alone won’t solve this problem, but they are the cornerstone we can build on.

We have now launched a discussion document which is open to everybody. We want this to be a discussion that goes from the ground up.

The document raises a number of topics for discussion, including establishing a set

of standalone family violence offences, ideas about improving the accessibility and effectiveness of protection orders, considering compelling police action in certain circumstances such as requiring mandatory arrest for all breaches of protection orders, and giving more prominence to victim safety in related legislation like the Care of Children Act. Brits urged to defy reports

Thousands evacuate Spain fire

British police are encouraging people to attend celebrations to mark the anniversary of the end of World War Two despite reports that British jihadis are planning to blow up the Queen during the events.

The assassination plot is being orchestrated from Syria by Islamic State commanders, according to the Mail on Sunday.

The newspaper reported that extremists aim to explode a bomb in central London during events to mark the 70th anniversary of VJ Day - Victory over Japan - which are expected to be watched by thousands of people.

The Mail on Sunday claimed it was informed by sources that a specific threat was made against the Queen, triggering a review of security arrangements.

“While the UK threat level from international terrorism remains severe, we would like to reassure the public that we constantly review security plans for public events, taking into account specific intelligence and the wider threat, a police spokesman said.

Buckingham Palace refused to comment on the reported threat.

The Queen and members of the Royal Family will take part in a series of events on Saturday.

A service attended by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, veterans, former prisoners of war and civilian internees will be held in central London.

The Japanese surrendered on August 14 following the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet declaration of war and invasion of Manchuria.

The next day, Wednesday August 15, was celebrated as Victory over Japan Day and the nation formally surrendered on September 2, 1945 at a ceremony in Tokyo Bay aboard USS Missouri.

Trump’s campaign in turmoil Boy, 9, rescued in desert US authorities have rescued a nine-year-old French boy in the New Mexico desert after finding photographs of him on his dead mother’s camera.

David Steiner, 42, and Ornella Steiner, 51, both from the small town of Bourgogne near Reims, had been hiking in the White Sands National Monument last week when they apparently died from heat exhaustion, Otero County Sheriff ’s Detective David Hunter said.

“They underestimated the elements,” Hunter said, adding that autopsy results were still pending. Park rangers found the mother first while on a routine patrol. They checked her camera and saw that she had been with two other people, Hunter said.

Authorities followed her tracks and found the body of the father, with their son nearby.

He was dehydrated but responsive and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The New York Daily News said authorities had contacted the French consulate and the boy’s grandmother had flown from France and taken custody of him.

Otero County Sheriff Benny House said the family had been travelling across the United States, visiting national parks and monuments.

House said the boy said his mother had headed back toward the car after becoming ill on the hike.

Organisers of a Republican event withdrew frontrunner Donald Trump’s invitation after he suggested that a presidential debate moderator was tough on him because she was menstruating.

The off-handed comment unleashed a new storm of criticism against Trump as he seeks the party’s nomination for next year’s election and leads in the polls.

The bombastic billionaire came under fire from his party after a particularly crude accusation that Fox News’ Megyn Kelly - one of the moderators at Thursday’s Republican presidential debate - singled him out with rough treatment.

Trump had already called out the station’s moderators for asking “unfair” questions after Kelly brought up his use of derogatory language towards women in Twitter posts. Kelly asked him if this was befitting a man vying to be the US president.

But he turned up the tone on Friday night when he told CNN that Kelly “is just somebody I didn’t have a lot of re-

spect for”.

“You can see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever,” he continued.

Those remarks prompted a prominent grassroots Republican event in Atlanta - RedState Gathering - to rescind a speaking invitation.

Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign told various US media at the weekend that he sacked top political advisor Roger Stone, as the controversy churned on.

“Roger wanted to use the

campaign for his own personal publicity ... and Mr Trump wants to keep the focus of the campaign on how to Make America Great Again,” a campaign spokesperson said.

Stone, however, took issue on Twitter with that version of events.

“Sorry @realDonaldTrump didn’t fire me - I fired Trump.

Diasagree (sic) with diversion to food fight with @megynkelly away core issue messages,” he wrote.

Carly Fiorina, the only female Republican presidential candidate, tweeted: “Mr. Trump: There. Is. No. Excuse.”

She later added “I stand with @megynkelly.”

Trump tried to backtrack from the comment about Kelly, stating that he was not referring to the body part most people had in mind from his remark on blood.

“So many ‘politically correct’ fools in our country. We have to all get back to work and stop wasting time and energy on nonsense!” he tweeted.

A wildfire that officials suspect was deliberately lit has forced the evacuation of nearly 2500 people from their homes in western Spain, local authorities say.

Around 1000 residents were evacuated early on Saturday from the town of Hoyos, a day after another 1400 people were ordered to leave their homes in two other nearby towns, the government of the Extremadura region said in a statement.

“The wind fanned the flames and caused the fire to spread, forcing the evacuation of Hoyos due to the proximity of the blaze and especially the smoke,” local Red Cross official Jose Lopez Santana told public radio.

The blaze, which broke out on Thursday in the Sierra de Gata mountain range amid scorching temperatures, has ravaged more than 6500 hectares of land.

Hundreds of firefighters, including a contingent sent from neighbouring Portugal, backed by 16 water-carrying planes and helicopters were battling the wildfire.

Firefighters took residents of a retirement home in Hoyos to a hospital in the nearby town of Coria.

“For families it is very hard not being able to remain at home but saving lives must be our top priority,” the head of the regional government, Guillermo Fernandez Vara, told reporters.

The cause of the fire was still undetermined but “everything seems to indicate” arson, he added.

“When a fire is concentrated in a very specific area it is because the hand of man must have played some kind of a role, because it is not hotter and drier in the Sierra de Gata than in the rest of Extremadura,” he said.

Latvian pilot and crew fail breath test The Latvian pilot of an airBaltic flight and three crew members have been pulled off the Greece-bound plane in Oslo after failing a breathalyser test before take-off, Norwegian police say.

“Results of the breathalyser tests confirmed that four of the five crew members were above

the legal alcohol limit,” Romerike police prosecutor Edith Ek Sorensen said yesterday.

The pilot, co-pilot and two stewardesses - all from Latvia and employed by airBaltic - were taken into police custody and escorted to hospital for blood tests to confirm the breathalyser exams.

Sorensen said police had acted after receiving a tip-off from an anonymous caller.

AirBaltic spokesman Janis Vanags said the company had a “zero tolerance” policy with regard to alcohol.

“Zero tolerance means no alcohol,” Vanags said. “It’s very straightforward - safety is our

number one priority. There has been an initial test and that is being followed up with more detailed tests. When we have the results we will take appropriate action,” he added, offering the company’s apologies to customers.

UN workers killed At least 12 people including four foreign UN contractors have been confirmed dead in a siege at a hotel in central Mali.

It ended yesterday when government troops stormed the building in Sevare.

“There are 12 dead in all,” an army officer said after the operation at the Hotel Byblos in Sevare, listing the fatalities as five “terrorists”, five soldiers and “two white people”.

The body of one of the foreign victims had lain in front of the hotel since Friday when the

gunmen stormed the building, the officer said.

The UN mission in Mali MINUSMA said two Ukrainians, a Nepalese and a South African were killed in the drama as well as a Malian driver working for a company contracted by the mission.

It said four others - two South Africans, a Russian and a Ukranian - were rescued and were in “good health.”

“The attackers did not detect their presence in the hotel and MINUSMA was in permanent

contact with them throughout the attack and until its end,” it added.

South Africa’s foreign ministry said a 38-year-old man from Pretoria was killed in the siege while two other South Africans were safe.

Local media identified the victim as Roelof Janse van Rensburg. A foreign ministry spokesman said he was working for an aviation company hired

by MINUSMA. The Ukrainian foreign ministry said four of its nationals

were caught up in the attack, one of whom was killed.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack, which comes as Mali is seeking to implement a June peace deal despite continuing unrest from militant groups and spreading jihadist attacks since the beginning of the year.

“This attack will not lessen the determination of the United Nations to accompany the Malian people in their efforts to implement the peace agreement,” the statement said.- AFP

Teacher jailed for life A Chinese court has sentenced a kindergarten teacher to life in jail for sexually abusing 12 of his students, the official Xinhua news agency reports. A court in the northern region of Ningxia sentenced Huang Zhenxin, a teacher at a rural school, for “raping or molesting” his female students, the report said. Police said he offered to tutor them on their homework before assaulting them. In May, China executed a former primary school teacher for raping and sexually abusing 26 children at his school, state media previously reported.

Legionnaires outbreak The number of people diagnosed with Legionnaires disease has risen to 108 as America’s largest city suffers from a record outbreak of the form of pneumonia. No new deaths have been reported on top of the 10 announced earlier in the week and officials say the outbreak is now on the decline.

To date, 94 people have been admitted to the hospital with the infection since the outbreak began on July 10 in the south Bronx, the poorest section of New York state. The disease is spread by a bacteria, which has recently been discovered in the cooling towers of five buildings in the South Bronx area.

World War Two shell One of the most popular beaches on the French Riviera has been forced to briefly close following the discovery of a World WarTwo shell. It was spotted six metres from the shore in Nice yesterday, officials said. The unexploded ordnance was found by a diver off a private beach in front of the city’s famous Negresco hotel, long a haunt of the rich and famous.

Two nearby public beaches were also closed as the area was evacuated to allow bomb disposal experts to make the shell safe in a controlled explosion.

Nagasaki marks 70th anniversary of bomb Japan has marked the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki that claimed more than 74,000 lives almost instantly, in one of the final chapters of World War Two. Bells tolled and tens of thousands of people, including ageing survivors and the relatives of victims, observed a minute’s silence yesterday at 11.02am, the exact moment the blast devastated the port city on August 9, 1945.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe laid a wreath of flowers, with representatives from 75 countries, including US ambassador Caroline Kennedy, attending the ceremony.

“As the only country attacked

with an atomic bomb in war, I am renewing our determination to lead the global effort of nuclear disarmament, to create a world without such weapons,” Abe said in his speech.

Abe also said the country would continue to abide by its long-held non-nuclear principles: not producing, possessing or allowing nuclear weapons on Japanese territory.

He was criticised for failing to mention the three principles at a ceremony days earlier in Hiroshima, alarming atomic bomb survivors, particularly at a time when the nationalist leader is trying to push through legislation to expand the role of the military.

Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue appeared to implicitly criticise the bills in a speech at the ceremony.

“Worries and anxieties are now spreading among us that this pledge made 70 years ago and the principle for peace in the Japanese constitution may be now undermined,” he said to loud applause.

A constitution imposed by US occupiers after the war prevented Japan’s military from engaging in combat except in self-defence.

About 74,000 people died in the initial blast in Nagasaki from a plutonium bomb dubbed “Fat Man”, or from after-effects in the months and years after.

The attack on Nagasaki came three days after American B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped a bomb, dubbed “Little Boy”, on Hiroshima, the first atomic bombing in history.

Nearly everything around it was incinerated by a wall of heat up to 4000°C - hot enough to melt steel.

About 140,000 people are estimated to have been killed in the Hiroshima attack, including those who survived the bombing itself but later died from radiation sickness.

Hackers have infiltrated the travel information video screens at a Brazilian bus station and replaced arrival and departure times with hard-core porn. The footage ran for 15 minutes on Friday night at the Boqueirao station in the southern city of Curitiba, officials said. The depot was packed with travellers at the time. The police cyber crime unit has been notified and is trying to trace the hacker or hackers, the municipal transport company said.

Shooting anniversary Several hundred people commemorating the police shooting of unarmed black teen Michael Brown have marched through Ferguson on the eve of the first anniversary of his death.

Led by Brown’s father, also named Michael, and the rest of his family, the crowd worked its way along one of the avenues hit by fierce rioting last November after a court decided not to indict the white officer who shot 18-yearold Brown. The rally was peaceful and boisterous, with a children’s marching band bringing up the rear of the parade.

Village life trumps luxury treatment

Fiji’s Biausevu waterfall is well worth the effort of the walk, even if you choose the wrong footwear.

Fiji time? Maybe 10,” our guide Saka told

us.

The cracking pace he had set through the rainforest was a shock to us girls, who had so far resembled cocktail-drinking sloths on our tropical holiday.

We had crossed the river no less than nine times on our way to the Biausevu waterfall on mainland Viti Levu’s Coral Coast.

I immediately regretted our choice of footwear as our thongs squelched in the muddy terrain throughout the 30-minute bush bash.

Why had we declined to ride horses up to the falls? We had spotted plenty on the side of the track – and even some in the middle of the roads on our bike ride there.

But Saka kept our spirits high with jokes as he pointed out banana, mandarin and avocado trees growing along the trail.

He even snapped the stem of a local bani cagi leaf and blew bubbles from the goo inside.

And soon enough our hair was blown back by the gusts of crashing water as we cooled off in our own private watering hole.

Lucy Hughes Jones goes bush on her trip to Fiji and finds the destination well worth the trip.

But like many adventures, the journey topped the destination.

To get to the waterfall you must pass through Biausevu village, a community of 300 people in the middle of a lush rainforest.

Here the bell sounds of kava being pounded rings through the trees, as does running water from the surrounding streams.

And children are playing everywhere: some race down hills in wheelbarrows, while others are dragged around in makeshift cars made of halved yellow oil containers, string and a handle bar.

We had seen snippets of the real Fiji on our drive down to the Coral Coast – glimpses of village life through the greenery.

We saw women selling oranges piled in little towers on the side of the road. Cooking fires burning. Men fishing in the turquoise shallows. Boys playing afternoon footy in open fields.

It was refreshingly different to the sunburnt tourists with

bad braids we had encountered thus far.

If my muscles were tight from our “hike”, Sava worked the kinks out good and proper during my traditional Vakacegu massage that afternoon.

Sava was a big Fijian lady with warm hands, coconut breath and a firm touch.

I later found out her “warm hands” was a special herbal poultice of Fijian medicine – coconut-scented – used to reduce tension and muscular pain.

But I was playing it safe and had shied away from the assortment of seaweed wraps, hydrotherapy baths and hot stone massages on offer at The Warwick Fiji Resort & Spa. Once I was sufficiently oiled and docile, we were off to dinner at The Warwick’s Wicked Walu, one of five restaurants helmed by award-winning Swiss chef Martin Glutz.

This fine dining seafood restaurant on its own island felt more like a local’s cookout once you got inside.

The burre hut had sand floors and a wood-carved roof interior, and we were greeted with a welcome drink of kava.

The seafood Kwasewa platter for two was fresh and impossible to finish, a highlight being the whole lobster from neighbouring Lautoka.

It is hard to believe that earlier that morning we were sitting on the postcard-white beaches of Tokoriki Island, one of 333 in the Fijian archipelago.

A small spec in the Mamanuca island group, you can arrive here by boat, seaplane or helicopter.

Our beachfront burre at the Sheraton Tokoriki came with a plunge pool filled with hibiscus flowers just four steps from the shoreline. But we spent most of our time on the other side of the island at the adults only Tokoriki Island Resort.

Here we drank young coconuts (sometimes mixed with rum) and lazed by the picturesque beachside infinity pool.

paddle boarding. The next I was snorkelling along the reef of Castaway Island - where Tom Hanks famously cried out for Wilson - while divers explored the depths beneath me.

And just a 45-minute boat ride away was Cloud 9, a twolevel floating bar in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean with its own pizzeria.

We had our hearts set on going, but each day the wind gods had other ideas and eventually it was deemed too dangerous.

Cloud 9 will always be the one that got away, but it is just another reason to go back.

In brief Methven loses in final Snow may have hampered some footballing plans on Saturday, but not for the Methven FC division five side playing in their final against Burwood FC. Played at Avonhead Park in Christchurch, the final was won by Burwood 3-2.

Methven were up 1-0 at half time but the home side got the upper hand in the second. Methven’s goals came from Zion Leicester and Richard King. Meanwhile, the Mid Canterbury United 18th grade division one team lost 3-0 to Selwyn United FC 18th Colts 3-0.

Silverware ‘a must’ Manuel Pellegrini may have been handed a new contract but, as Manchester City prepare to open their Premier League campaign at West Bromwich Albion overnight, the Chilean coach is under no illusions that he must win silverware to keep his job. Pellegrini followed the resounding success of his first year at City, in which he won the Premier League and League Cup, with a disappointing season that ended with the big-spending club surrendering the title to Chelsea and finishing empty-handed. The 61-year-old is well aware that a repeat of last season’s second place finish in the Premier League and Champions League last 16 exit will not be acceptable.

Clean sweep for Japan An improved effort from the Tall Ferns saw them get close to Japan in Ashburton yesterday, but it wasn’t enough to stop the visitors from clinching a 3-0 series win.

Japan took out game three of the three-match series 8173, but the Tall Ferns will take great confidence from the match as they head to Australia today to take on the Australian Opals.

International basketball’s debut at the EA Networks Centre drew a crowd of around 500 people, and they weren’t disappointed by the game that played out in front of them.

The New Zealand women stuck with the Japanese – the 15th ranked team in the world - right until the end.

Tall Ferns coach Kennedy Kereama started with the five players likely to start against Australia in Melbourne this weekend at the Oceania Championships, but most players got some court time ahead of their bid to qualify for the Rio Olympics.

There was nothing in it for much of the match; the Tall Ferns kept up with the fastpaced Japanese side in the first quarter to only trail 18-15 at quarter time, and Japan raced out to a seven point lead in the second quarter before the Tall Ferns fought back with their best quarter of the series to tie things up at half-time, 37-all.

Every loose ball was fiercely contested and with almost every basket the Tall Ferns sunk,

their bench players were on their feet cheering their side on, and just three points separated the two sides at three-quarter time – 60-57 to Japan.

A tense final five minutes loomed when the Tall Ferns drew even again at 68-all, and while – given the first two losses in the series – many may have been expecting Japan’s superior fitness to help them run away with it in the final stages, they didn’t.

Tall Ferns captain Natalie Taylor rallied her girls and sunk consecutive baskets with just three minutes to play, an upset over the Asian champions was on the cards.

But diminutive Japanese point guard Rui Machida took control of the game for the vis-

itors, slicing through the Tall Ferns’ defence with ease, and scoring the final six points of the match to seal the victory.

The Tall Ferns led the rebounding count 47-36 with Kalani Purcell, Lisa Wallbutton and Penina Davidson each securing double-digit numbers on the boards, but Japan edged the important scoring stats shooting 44 per cent from the floor compared with the Tall Ferns’ 39 per cent.

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was sent off as their Premier League title defence got under way with an engrossing 2-2 draw at home to an excellent Swansea City side. Jose Mourinho’s men were leading 2-1 at Stamford Bridge when Courtois was dismissed for fouling Bafetimbi Gomis right on the edge of his area and the French striker scored the equaliser from the spot. It was another impressive opening-day display by Garry Monk’s Swansea, who won 2-1 at Manchester United a year ago.

Big swim for Kiwi A New Zealander has become the first woman to swim the 50km stretch from the Farallon Islands to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge in the United States yesterday, conquering one of the world’s most dangerous crossings. Kim Chambers, 38, dove in the cold water and passed under the bridge about 17 hours later. “I had my whole crew just giving me the thumbs up. I can see the bridge and when you can see that you know have to get there,” Chambers said. “I definitely had to dig really, really deep.”

Kudos for Bayliss Trevor Bayliss has only been in the England coaching hot seat for six weeks but it was long enough to plot Australia’s downfall and regain the Ashes. After being persuaded to swap Sydney for London by England’s director of cricket Andrew Strauss in May, the former NSW coach only met his new players less than two weeks before the opening Test in Cardiff. A four-day trip to Spain allowed Bayliss the chance to get to know skipper Alastair Cook. In that time he has helped transform England, who are unrecognisable when compared to the team held to a 1-1 draw by a mediocre West Indies outfit in April.

Dragons rout Warriors St George Illawarra have overcome the early loss of playmaker Benji Marshall to thrash an abject Warriors 36-0 in Wellington. Hooker Mitch Rein stepped up with a brilliant game in the absence of the veteran halfback, who limped off in the 16th minute. Mulvihill defends title on court Geraldine’s Pat Mulvihill has added another Mid Canterbury Squash Championship title to his growing collection.

Mulvihill went into the weekend’s Mid Canterbury Championships, hosted by the Collegiate Squash Club, as top seed and defending champion and again came out on top, beating Methven’s Elliot McNutt in the final.

While eventually over in three sets, the final was still a highly entertaining match, and McNutt certainly providing some resistance to Mulvihill’s advance to another title.

In the first set McNutt, using his long reach and some amazing anticipation, actually built a small lead, but Mulvihill was relentless, eventually forcing

mistakes from his opponent by taking away that milli-second of time McNutt needed to place his shots, and even coming up with a remarkable backwardsbetween-the-legs shot of his own.

Some extraordinary rallies were played out in the second set, with both players picking up shots that looked all-over winners, but Mulvihill, despite a lack of top match play over the last few months, had enough to hold out the challenger 17-15.

The third set was a little anticlimactic, with McNutt, despite putting in an outstanding effort, forced into a series of errors, finding the tin more than he had in all his previous games combined.

a whole lot better by this time, and left McNutt high and dry on several occasions, going on to deservingly take the title.

The seedings proved to be spot on in the women’s draw too, with Julie Smith taking out the title, beating Rakaia’s Christina Lima in the final.

It looked like a straight sets result in the offing after Smith dominated the first two sets, but Lima is nothing if not tenacious, and she fought back well to grab the third set, and a contest was again on the cards, but in the fourth Smith regained control of the T, and with it the opportunity to put in a series of drops that left Lima stranded behind her.

The remaining titles up for grabs were shared by members

of the Methven and Collegiate clubs. The A grade was won by Carl McHugh from Methven, while B grade was won by Collegiate’s Nathan Bartlett, and C grade by Methven’s Chris Batt.

D and E grades were both won by players on their home court, with Josh Tonks winning the D grade and Blair Snowball taking E grade honours.

Play got under way on Friday night, and by the time games finished snow was covering the ground outside, Mid Canterbury Squash’s Logan Ford said.

“It meant it was a bit hairy driving home,” he said.

But everyone made it along on Saturday and play wasn’t affected, with officials working hard outside to clear snow and make sure it was safe.

The Wests Tigers are oozing optimism, but coach Jason Taylor is wary of just how quickly Canberra’s cold can put a freeze on it. The joint venture snapped a five-game NRL losing streak and lifted themselves off the bottom of the ladder with a surprise 34-16 win over perennial finalists Melbourne last Friday.

While a top-eight berth remains out of reach Taylor said the victory and 10-day turnaround put them in good stead for tonight’s clash with the Raiders at GIO Stadium. - AAP

Sharks flex muscles Cronulla have stamped themselves as genuine NRL premiership contenders with a gritty 30-18 win over North Queensland. Snow upsets schedule Snow forced the cancellation of the rugby match between Mid Canterbury A and the Tasman Under-19 side on Saturday. The game was due to be played in Hanmer but the team never even made it, due to Friday night’s snow. The Mid Canterbury Heartland Championship side didn’t have a game at the weekend either, due to Southland pulling out, so their last warm-up match before the competition starts will be this weekend against North Otago.

Milner-Skudder shines The request made by the All Black coaches to Nehe Milner-Skudder was to show in Sydney whether he could transfer his Super Rugby skills to the test arena. Challenge dutifully accepted and fulfilled and now the 24-year-old has made an intriguing situation positively fascinating. Milner-Skudder was the undisputed highlight of a disappointing night. There was always a risk that his style of game wouldn’t necessarily work too well at the highest level, but after his début, he’s sitting more firmly in the point of difference camp and the selectors will be seriously tempted to pick him again this week at Eden Park to see what else he can do.

College 1st XV still a show for finals berth Ashburton College’s first XV’s future still hangs in the balance after their must-win match on Saturday was postponed due to snow.

Snow on the field at the Ashburton Showgrounds made the grounds unplayable and the secondary schools’ rugby match was postponed until today.

But only two games were af-

fected by the weather meaning the other game crucial to the Ashburton side’s future, was played, and it went Ashburton’s way.

Christ’s College are currently in eighth spot on the UC Championship table and if they’d beaten St Bede’s on Saturday they would have ensured they kept that eighth and final spot heading into the play offs.

But St Bede’s won, meaning if Ashburton College can beat St Thomas’, they will take that last finals spot.

Christ’s College went down 31-6 to St Bede’s and their future now rests in the hands of Ashburton College and St Thomas’.

Ashburton College heads into today’s match in good form, having defeated Roncalli

College from Timaru in an eight-try romp a week ago, but they’re not taking anything for granted against St Thomas’, with the Christchurch side just one point behind them on the points table and both having four wins to their names so far this season.

The game will now be played today at 1.30pm, at the Ashburton College ground.

Wallabies roll below-par ABs Basic errors, another poor night at the breakdown and a strangely under powered scrum were quickly labelled by the All Blacks as their key issues to fix for this week’s return Eden Park clash.

No dispute there.

They were clearly guilty of turning over too much ball; of throwing too many passes that were never likely to land in someone’s hands.

The breakdown was again an area of concern - as it was at Ellis Park - but while the outcome was mostly similar, the reasons for being second best were different.

“We certainly turned over the

ball the same,” said All Black captain Richie McCaw. “I thought the reason in the previous game was we didn’t have enough people there [at the tackled ball].

“Tonight we had people there but we didn’t get the job done.

“It was pretty frustrating.

You turn the ball over and that is obviously a chance for the pressure to be released.

“But it is not a real complicated thing to fix. We have just got to make sure we do fix it.”

The thing about the tackled ball area is that there are multiple facets that can affect it.

The All Blacks talked all week about the need for ball carriers

to be dominant in the collision to ensure good body position at the presentation.

They talked about the need to be going forward and playing in front of the gainline.

But too often they did neither as they looked to push the ball wide quickly.

They looked frantic and unsettled while they pursued that policy and too often ball carriers were hit as they scrambled to collect poor passes or pounce or recover loose ball.

It was impossible for the All Blacks to exert the pressure and control they needed while they tried to play like that.

“Most of the night we strug-

gled with our execution and when it got tight we made some really poor decisions with it,” said All Black coach Steve Hansen.

“Pressure can create errors, so we did get some of that from Australia but I think some of that was forced upon us by our own decision making when we weren’t under pressure.

“That put us on the back foot and Australia were good enough to steam over the top of us.”

Those words haven’t been said by an All Black coach since August 2011 when the Wallabies last beat New Zealand.

Test defeat ‘sucks’ All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has admitted that the Wallabies were the better side in Saturday night’s Rugby Championship decider.

The Wallabies claimed the Rugby Championship with a 27-19 win, and Hansen believes that they deserved the victory. “We just got beaten by the better side on the night. It’s an inconvenient reality. It doesn’t mean that all of a sudden we have become a bad side. We have to go away and look at ourselves even though we are hurting. It’s not something we have had to do very often but it still sucks.”

Andertons claim another GN High Forty completed a winter of content for trainers Brian and Shane Anderton when he crowned a wonderful jumping season with a runaway Grand National Steeplechase victory at Riccarton on Saturday.

The rugged southerner produced another dominant display to credit the Anderton family their fourth win in the Racecourse Hotel & Motor Lodgesponsored event.

Brian, who races High Forty with his wife Lorraine and their Australian friend Terry Burke, had previously won the race with Bymai (1984) and Lord Venture (1988).

After taking his son into partnership, he struck again with Noble Express (1994) with Shane also doing the riding honours.

“It’s just brilliant and I’m especially pleased for Shane.

“He’s been in it for the long haul and he puts in a lot of

work,” Brian Anderton said.

High Forty had won his previous five starts over the big fences, including the Koral Steeplechase on the opening

day of the National carnival.

“This horse has just amazed us this year with the way he has just kept on improving,” Anderton said.

Sharing in the National glory was the Cambridge-based jockey Michael Mitchell, who has ridden High Forty six times for five wins and a runner-up finish.

“It’s a great feeling and it’s brilliant to have a South Island winner,” he said.

“He’s a super horse to ride, he relaxes and jumps so well.”

High Forty and Mitchell bided their time off the pace before improving near the rail across the top and then asserted their superiority.

“I attacked down the inside to find the short cuts and he ran away from them,” Mitchell said.

High Forty was out by 12 lengths at the post from a brave Mr Mor, who took second off Hezanakilad close to the post.

Get Flash was fourth ahead of last year’s winner Eric The Viking, who weakened out after making the early running.

Track surface key The prevailing track conditions at today’s Egmont Racing Club meeting at Hawera will be the determining factor for Cambridge visitor Hydrogen to make the trip south to contest the open 2100 metre contest. Originally set to be run last Thursday the meeting was transferred after heavy rain and surface water meant no racing was possible.

With the track now rated a Heavy 11 co-trainer Katie Bussey is unsure if she and husband Dale will make the trip with Hydrogen who generally prefers a better surface. “We had entered him for Thursday thinking the track would be fine for him as he really needs a run to keep him on track for his spring campaign,” explained Bussey. - NZME

The Awapuni gelding won his maiden on the track in 2013 and he made a successful return to Riccarton on Saturday to claim the Speight’s Mid Ale Premier Hurdle. “He did a tendon at Te Rapa two years ago so that’s why he had a long break,” Laura Knight said.

Ferns stun Aussies It was a hell of way to snap a losing streak.

Winless against their trans-Tasman rivals in nearly two years, the Silver Ferns yesterday upstaged Australia in front of a record netball crowd at Sydney’s Allphones Arena, recording a 52-47 win to top pool A in the Netball World Cup. Ten months ago, Allphones Arena was the site of one of this current Ferns side’s darkest days.

They suffered a heavy 48-34 defeat to Australia in the third test of the Constellation Cup, and they lost their heroic captain, Casey Kopua to a serious knee injury.

No one expected Kopua to be back here for the Netball World Cup, let alone dominating Caitlin Bassett, Australia’s seemingly unstoppable super shooter, in yesterday’s round robin clash.

Kopua wasn’t the only star.

Unheralded shooter Bailey Mes was mesmerising in the goal circle, outplaying star Australian defender Laura Geitz.

She was well-supported by Maria Tutaia, who after a shaky start, was soon at her brilliant longrange shooting best, dropping in the shots from the circle edge with

apparent ease. When they didn’t sink, more often than not Mes was there to mop up, picking up five offensive rebounds.

Laura Langman shone in the middle, playing with pace and urgency on attack, and forcing the Australian midcourt into a lot of uncharacteristic errors with her relentless defensive effort.

Having not yet been tested against strong opposition, the new-look Ferns line-up were an unknown quantity heading into the match. It turns out they’re a pretty handy quantity.

But coach Waimarama Taumaunu was quick to hose down

any talk the Ferns are now the title favourites.

“One game is not a trend, but it is a good start,” said Taumaunu.

Leading 29-26 at halftime, the third spell proved the decisive period for the Ferns, with New Zealand stretching out to a eight-goal lead on the back of a couple of strong defensive plays early on.

Predictably Australia surged back, but the Ferns still held a handy six-goal lead at the final turn.

Despite some rather rugged defence in the final period, the New Zealand side held their nerve to claim their first win over the Diamonds since October 2013.

The result has given the World Cup a major shake-up, with most expecting the Diamonds would waltz their way to their third straight crown in Sydney.

Both sides will now have a day off as they contemplate their assault on the second round.

Yesterday’s win will put New Zealand on a more favourable side of the draw for the qualification round matches, with the Ferns in the same group as Jamaica, while Australia will meet England at some point over the next three days.

Boyle unfazed by prodigy

By DaviD Leggat It’s Lauren Boyle’s misfortune to swim the same events as a teenager already tipped to perhaps become the greatest female swimmer of them all.

Boyle won a second silver medal at the world championships in Kazan, Russia, yesterday to take to five her number of medals at the event, half New Zealand’s total haul.

The Auckland freestyler can now look forward to challenging hard for the podium at next year’s Rio Olympics.

Right now, though, the only prospect of her standing at the top is if Katie Ledecky takes up golf.

The 18-year-old from Bethesda, Maryland, easily set another world record in winning the 800m final yesterday, in 8 min 07.39s. Boyle recorded a New Zealand and Oceania record of 8:17.65, while Britain’s Jaz Carlin took third a further .50s back.

Ledecky set three world records, won five gold medals and won an unprecedented sweep of 200, 400, 800 and 1500m freestyle titles at the championships.

While the American surged clear in familiar style, Boyle got out in front of the chasing pack and had enough left in the tank to hold off the fast-finishing Carlin in a terrific swim.

It is tempting to imagine her fellow swimmers regard the phenomenal Led-

ecky as racing simply with herself, and the clock, leaving the rest to scrap for the leftovers. Boyle is reluctant to take that mental route.

“I think it’s not a great mindset going in, thinking she is going to be really far ahead,” Boyle said.

“That has happened, but I don’t lose confidence if it does.

“For me, I usually swim my best races when I’m totally involved in my own race and not really focusing on what anyone else is doing.

“But what Katie is doing is amazing for the sport and I think helps all swimmers open our minds to what is possible.”

Boyle likes Ledecky, but is in with the rest in trying to figure a way to catch her. She’ll head back to the Miami Swim Club on the Gold Coast early next month and their renowned coach Dennis Cotterell.

“He’s an amazing coach. What I really love is you can tell he coaches because he loves it and is really passionate about the sport. That filtrates into all the athletes he coaches.”

Once Boyle is back on the Gold Coast she’ll pull on her goggles and fix her gaze on Rio next year.

“I hope I can do more and think I probably can,” Boyle said.

“I can swim faster than I have. It’s all about doing it in the right situation and having the preparation that will allow that.”

Pliskova in top form Karolina Pliskova advanced to her fifth final of the year, beating American Varvara Lepchenko 6-2 7-5 in the Bank of the West Classic.

Black’s title hopes take a hit

BY ERIN TASKER Snow prevented play in one senior hockey match in Ashburton on Saturday, but cleared in time for another, and by day’s end both the men’s and women’s semi-finalists were known.

Hampstead was due to play Geraldine in the final round robin match for the senior women in the Mid/South Canterbury competition, but with snow on the turf in Ashburton the game was cancelled, meaning Hampstead finished the

round robin unbeaten at the top of the points table and will take on Mid Canterbury’s other team, Hampstead/Collegians in the semi-finals this weekend.

Hampstead/Collegians did play on Saturday, in Timaru, and they came away with a 2-0 win over Craighead.

Both Hampstead/Collegians’ goals came in the first half – the first set up by Courtney Cannon and finished by Emma Mealings, and the second from a penalty corner deflection by Britney Hindson.

Back in Ashburton the snow cleared in time for Wakanui Black to host Northern Hearts in a match they needed to win to reclaim the top-of-the-table spot they relinquished last week. But they lost 2-1, and have dropped from second to third.

For Wakanui Black to finish on top, they not only needed to win, but they also needed their club-mates Wakanui Blue to beat Tainui, and the Blue side came out and upheld that side of the bargain.

They defeated Tainui – the

side that leap-frogged Black into top spot last week – 2-1 in Timaru.

Wakanui Black will now face second placed Cambridge in one semi-final, while fourth-placed Wakanui Blue will take on topof-the-table Tainu in the other semi-final.

Both will be played in Timaru and while Black heads into the finals on an unexpected downer following a couple of not so great weeks, Blue will be full of confidence taking on the top side, given they’ve just got one

up over them a week out from finals.

The last time Wakanui Black and Cambridge played on August 1, the game ended in a 2-all draw, while just a few short weeks before that, Cambridge got up 5-4.

For the women, Hampstead will be favourites to win their semi-final against Hampstead/ Collegians and take out the title after a stellar season.

So far this season they’ve had 10 wins, four draws and no losses.
