74-year-old may be deported A 74-year-old Ashburton man who has been falsely claiming New Zealand superannuation is likely to be deported to Fiji after the courts deal with three fraud charges against him. Julian Theo Crosby Giblin was in the Ashburton District Court yesterday, where he admitted dishonestly using his brother’s name to obtain a passport, dishonestly using a driver’s licence in his brother’s name and deceiving the Min-
istry of Social Development to receive superannuation payments totalling $20,943. He was remanded to December 4 for sentencing. Judge Joanna Maze said police needed to find out if MSD intended to lay charges of welfare fraud and if they intended to recover the money. Police said Giblin came to New Zealand from Fiji in 1997 on a visitor’s visa, which expired in 2000.
