74-year-old may be deported A 74-year-old Ashburton man who has been falsely claiming New Zealand superannuation is likely to be deported to Fiji after the courts deal with three fraud charges against him.

Julian Theo Crosby Giblin was in the Ashburton District Court yesterday, where he admitted dishonestly using his brother’s name to obtain a passport, dishonestly using a driver’s licence in his brother’s name and deceiving the Min-

istry of Social Development to receive superannuation payments totalling $20,943. He was remanded to December 4 for sentencing.

Judge Joanna Maze said police needed to find out if MSD intended to lay charges of welfare fraud and if they intended to recover the money.

Police said Giblin came to New Zealand from Fiji in 1997 on a visitor’s visa, which expired in 2000.

His brother John Giblin was a New Zealand citizen but lived in Australia and Julian Giblin had dishonestly used his name. He used the falsely acquired passport and driver’s licence to apply for superannuation payments from August last year.

Treatment frustrates mum

Mayfield mum Kirstin Reiher was frustrated at being told to take her daughter to see a duty doctor by Ashburton Hospital staff on Saturday.

Reiher had taken three-anda-half-year-old Marley to the hospital’s Acute Admissions Unit about 11.30am, on the advice of a Healthline nurse.

Marley had been diagnosed by a GP the day before with a cold.

However, symptoms had worsened, and by the time she arrived at the hospital she had had no food or fluids for 48 hours, was in pain, and lethargic with a high heart rate.

When staff told Reiher to take her daughter to the duty doctor, she had not believed she would make it there before it closed at midday, as by this time she would have had only about 10 minutes left to get there. And she did not want to wait to see the evening duty doctor from 6pm to 7pm.

“I had to argue that we aren’t going anywhere and my child needs medical care,” Reiher said.

“It wasn’t an emergency as in I needed an ambulance, but it couldn’t have waited another six to seven hours to see a duty doctor.”

Staff put Reiher and Marley in a hospital room, and gave Marley

water and an iceblock, and they attached a monitor to her toe.

Reiher said they ended up waiting there until about 3pm for a doctor to become available, which she felt was too long.

However, she was satisfied with the care from the doctor, who diagnosed tonsillitis, an inner ear infection and possible allergic reaction. In addition a swab was taken for the possibility of strep throat.

A Canterbury District Health Board spokesperson said she could not comment on individual cases, but wanted to convey to everyone the importance of calling their GP in the first instance.

“If it is after hours, they will triage you and send you to the most appropriate place for care,” she said.

“The Acute Assessment Unit provides acute episodic care 24/7. When you arrive you are assessed by a nurse and monitoring and appropriate treatments are initiated. You will then be seen in a safe and timely manner by the hospital duty doctor.

“As with all emergency departments, low acuity patients may have to wait as more acute cases are prioritised.

“We welcome feedback, including complaints, from any source as it allows us the opportunity to continually assess and improve our service,” she added.

Youth faces a raft of charges An Ashburton youth accused of driving a stolen vehicle when it was stopped by police using road spikes in Christchurch 11 days ago appeared in the Ashburton Youth Court yesterday.

The 16-year-old faced charges of burglary, taking a vehicle, reckless driving, failing to stop

for police and driving while forbidden.

He also has a raft of other charges being dealt with in Youth Court.

The matters were remanded to October 30.

Three other Ashburton youths were in the vehicle when police first tried to pull it

over on Linwood Avenue in the early hours of September 30.

They are also likely to face charges.

One of the three was to have appeared in the Ashburton court yesterday on other matters but he did not front.

His matters were also put off until October 30.

The discrepancy came to light only when his brother applied for New Zealand superannuation.

Giblin told officers he had been using his brother’s name since 2002, but he had run a business while living in New Zealand.

“He is a first-time offender. He wants deportation back to Fiji where he has family.”

Judge Maze said there were significant aspects to the offending, which could warrant more than a community-based sentence.

Fire in trees ‘suspicious’

A large vegetation fire at the end of Chalmers Avenue on Saturday morning is being treated as suspicious.

The fire began in a 25 metre line of trees near the Mania-oroto scout den, and was spotted at around 12.05am by Talbot Security Group staff.

Ashburton Fire & Emergency were alerted to the blaze and swiftly arrived on the scene, along with police.

Chief fire officer Alan Burgess

said firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control relatively quickly.

They departed after an hour at about 1.05am.

No buildings were damaged by the blaze, and Talbot Security were praising the “good work” of firefighters.

Police spoke to nearby neighbours, but a spokesperson said no evidence was located at the scene.

Anybody who saw any suspicious activity in the area on Friday night is asked to contact police.

Trees at the end of Chalmers Avenue have been left charred after a suspicious fire in the early hours of Saturday.

Circus coming to town for 12 performances

The largest touring circus in Australasia is en route to Ashburton for the first time ever.

From October 20 to 29, the Weber Bros Circus will set up camp in the Ashburton Domain, and present 12 performances of their latest show, Adrenaline.

Ashburton marks the first South Island stop on the circus’s New Zealand tour, and tickets went on sale at the Regent Cinema on Friday.

Regent Cinema owner David Favel said there had already been “quite a bit” of interest.

“It will be quite a big one,” he said.

The New Zealand-founded

circus have recently returned from a six-year world tour, and are billing Adrenaline as their “most exciting and thrilling production yet”.

The two-hour show will feature slapstick comedy, stunts and trapeze.

Audiences will also see motorcyclists riding at speed inside the Splitting Globe of Death and a human cannon launching an acrobat from one side of the stage to the other.

The Weber Bros Circus stars 50 performers in total, hailing from locations around the world. No animals are used in their latest show.

In brief Dead driver just 15 The male driver of a stolen car who died in a police pursuit in Otara yesterday was 15 years old.

Police confirmed the teen was also a passenger in a car spotted driving the wrong way on an Auckland motorway last month.

The 15-year-old was Morocco Tai, of Otara, police said. Two injured female passengers in yesterday’s crash on Bairds Road were aged 16. One is in a stable condition in hospital while the other remains in a serious condition. The car, which was stolen earlier from Takanini, hit a tree about one minute after the police pursuit began just before 6am.

Botched quake repairs

Nine groups receive funds Nine local community groups were last week given a helping hand with funding their creative projects.

The recipients were awarded Creative Communities Scheme funding at a presentation last week at the Ashburton District Council.

More than $11,000 was presented to the groups, courtesy of Creative New Zealand, who

provide funding to councils each year to distribute in their communities.

Council community relations manager, Vincie Billante said being able to give to the creative sector of the community was a real positive.

“It is always a pleasure to present our local artistic and creative groups with financial support through the Creative

Communities Scheme,” she said.

“The funding helps develop opportunities for the community to participate in creative activities and enables people to engage with the arts.”

Receiving grants last week were: Hakatere Ceramics, Glenys’ Dance Group, CanInspire Charitable Trust, Ashburton Civic Music Council, Ashburton Youth Café Charitable Trust, Lau-

riston School, Variety Theatre Ashburton, He Waka Tapu and Grace Gallery Ashburton.

Applications for the first round of funding closed on August 21 and were assessed by a local committee with a background in the Ashburton District’s varied arts community.

The second round of funding will open in March next year.

Votes flying in for bird of the year competition

Winged regulars to Mid Canterbury including wrybills and black-billed gulls are vying for the title of New Zealand Bird of the Year 2017.

The annual competition run

by Forest & Bird commenced yesterday morning.

New Zealanders can vote for their favourite New Zea-

land bird out of 54 contestants.

The competition aims to raise awareness of the dangers facing many species.

Bird of the year co-ordinator Kimberley Collins said new features to this year’s competition include the ability to see each bird’s conservation status.

“I think a lot of people will be surprised to see how many of our native birds are at risk,”

Collins said. This year’s competition featured a strong presence from braided river birds including banded dotterels, black stilts, wrybills and blackbilled gull.

These bird varieties are all classed as being “in serious trouble”, and all can be found most frequently in Canterbury.

After one day of voting the kea had already flown to the lead,

with close to 300 votes. Last year the kokako was crowned a winner.

Bird of the Year voting opened on Monday, October 9 at 9am and closes on Monday, October 23 at 5pm.

The winner will be announced at 9am on Tuesday, October 24.

Christchurch residents who bought houses after the earthquakes and since uncovered, and inherited, “botched” repair jobs have filed High Court proceedings against the Earthquake Commission. Shine Lawyers filed 13 separate claims against EQC yesterday on behalf of what lawyer Andrew Hooker described as “a new category of claimants”. More claims are expected to follow. Hooker says that after the 2010-2011 earthquake sequence, a number of people bought houses which they thought had been properly repaired by EQC. “However, after doing all the right things, undertaking their due diligence, purchasing the houses then finding their house repairs were botched by EQC, they also discover that they have no insurance company from which to claim,” he said.

Remanded in custody A man accused of the attempted murder of a woman has been remanded in custody for a psychiatric assessment. Arana Te Rata Barlow, 36, made a brief appearance in the Hamilton District Court yesterday. As well as referring his client for a psychiatric assessment, duty solicitor Gavin Boot, appearing on behalf of Barlow, also suggested a report be prepared to assess his fitness to plead to the charges. The report will assess whether Barlow was insane at the time of the alleged offending on Friday in which a woman was allegedly stabbed and a 2-year-old child taken on the Ngati Maru Highway at Thames.

Recidivist drink driver jailed A Mid Canterbury man with seven drink driving convictions was jailed for 12 months yesterday.

The rate of Glenn Darryn Meager’s offending was unacceptable and inexcusable, Judge Joanna Maze said in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Meager, 49, was already subject to a zero alcohol licence when he got behind the wheel in March. His vehicle became airborne after crashing across a traffic island on West Street and police were called to the scene; a sample of Meager’s blood was later found to have 291 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Judge Maze said the blood alcohol rate was the equivalent of about 1450mcg.

He had admitted drink driving and careless driving.

A report prepared for sentencing recommended home detention, but the judge said Meager had run his course for a community-based sentence.

Meager had served home detention for his sixth drink drive offence in 2013, when he blew 605mcg. He had previous drink drive offences in 2012 and 2010. Earlier offences were in 1989 and 1986.

Judge Maze said the accident on West Street had put other people in danger.

“And the fact there was a zero alcohol licence in place makes it more significant than simply drink driving. I have no option but to sentence you to imprisonment.”

Meager was disqualified from driving indefinitely.

Miranda Kate Smith, 32, admitted driving with excess breath alcohol on Cameron Street on September 2. Police stopped her vehicle and breath-tested her; she blew 954mcg.

Judge Maze said it was a high reading for the meatworker, who admitted having four

to five stubbies with friends.

She was fined $800, ordered to pay court costs of $130 and disqualified from driving for six months.

James Ihaka admitted charges of driving while disqualified and resisting police, which stemmed from an incident in Wellington earlier this year. The meat worker was convicted and fined a total of $650 and disqualified from driving for six months.

Stacey Lana Cox, 32, was fined $750 and disqualified from driving for six months after admitting driving with excess breath alcohol on Oak Grove on September 24. Cox blew 791mcg.

Rachel Elizabeth Dyer, 38, admitted driving after her licence had been suspended because of excess demerit points. Police stopped her driving a van on Eton Street.

She was convicted and fined $200 and disqualified from driving for six months.

Donald Grant Twamley blew 727mcg when police stopped him on Harrison Street in the early hours of September 10. He said he had been at a function in Christchurch.

He was remanded to October 30 for sentence.

Cory William Paul, 17, was remanded for sentence to November 20 after admitting driving with excess breath alcohol on September 10.

Paul, as a driver under 20, blew 236mcg.

The level for his age is zero.

Stewart James Johnston was fined $200 and disqualified from driving for six months after admitting a charge of driving while his licence was suspended.

He had been forbidden to drive for three months from July 7 because of excess demerit points but was caught behind the wheel on August 18 in Rakaia.

Casey Lee Gillespie, 18, was remanded for sentence to December 4 after admitting a charge of careless driving causing injury.

A passenger in her car sustained injuries to his spleen when she turned in front of a car on Moore Street.

A Dorie man has admitted two driving charges related to an accident at the intersection of Boltons Road and Cracroft Maronan Road in June. Kumar Gourav, 24, was driving on Boltons Road when he went through the intersection and hit another vehicle.

One of the other vehicle’s occupants suffered serious facial injuries and was in hospital for 12 days.

Woman loses appeal over pregnancy compensation A solo mum who became pregnant after a failed sterilisation has lost her bid for weekly compensation after an 11-year battle with ACC. In a judgment released yesterday the Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal against an earlier High Court decision to deny the woman weekly compensation for loss of earnings while she stayed at home and raised her child.

The woman, known only as Ms J, became pregnant in 2006 after a botched sterilisation procedure eight years earlier.

She had previously been granted ACC cover for personal injury for her pregnancy and the time recovering after giving birth on the grounds of medical misadventure after clips that should have been attached to the fallopian tube were attached to the bladder.

The weekly compensation spanned the weeks from mid-May through to the end of July in 2006.

The mum then began a court battle against ACC for weekly loss of earnings to compensate for the time spent off work to care for her child.

But the Court of Appeal found while the pregnancy was deemed an injury the

She was unable to call on family or the father of the child to help her and did not have the financial resources to stop working for a time and care for her child.

Justice Kos said the child was the natural and inevitable consequence of the personal injury of pregnancy.

He believed she was entitled to weekly compensation as long as caring for her child prevented her from returning to work.

Maka Tuakoi, 23, admitted driving with excess breath alcohol on Beach Road in September. He blew 513mcg.

Police said he had also been previously forbidden to drive.

Tuakoi, who has previous similar charges, was remanded to December 4 for sentencing.

ACC paid for a psychologist to fly from Palmerston North to support Courtenay Andre Wegman, who was appearing on charges of breaching a protection order, assault and ill-treating animals.

Wegman was supposed to have been sentenced after the case was transferred from Hawera to Ashburton, but while a police prosecutor was present, there was no representative from the SPCA for the animal charges.

The case was put off until October 30.

James Phillip Kenny was sentenced to four months’ community detention after admitting two charges of careless driving, driving while his licence had been suspended and driving with excess breath alcohol.

Kenny is subject to a 6pm to 6am curfew and disqualified from driving for 13 months from January 22 next year.

He must also pay reparation of $524.

The 25-year-old landscape gardener struck a fence on Cochranes Road then drove on until his vehicle hit a mound of dirt and became stuck.

Police called to the scene found he should not have been driving.

He was breath-tested and blew 445mcg.

H

ow should we sell the Ashburton District as a place for people to come and live?

The appearance of mayor, Donna Favel on national television last week certainly drummed up some attention for our sleepy (and I use the word sleepy to coincide with the noise of crickets that was played during her introduction) little district.

But what are our key selling points?

The beautiful scenery, wide open spaces and plethora of employment opportunities in a vast array of different sectors?

Obviously yes. But you can find those alluring features in almost any rural part of New Zealand.

So, what about the people?

Miscreant youth aside, we are a pretty friendly, well-behaved, culturally and ethnic diverse bunch of folk, which is a pretty good start. We have been welcoming any number of different nationalities to our region for many years and doing our best to make them feel welcome and a true part of the way of life we lead.

That should definitely be in the description.

As someone who grew up here, left for the bright lights of the big city only to return seeking out the lifestyle I once had, I really do feel that it is our way of life that we should be using as our main marketing tool for attracting new faces to the district.

Things are done just a notch or two down on other parts of New Zealand.

There is no real hustle and bustle, we go about life in a reasonably calm and casual sense – not too much seems to worry us.

Evidence of this comes at the traffic lights when we have no problem waiting five extra seconds after the light changes because the person in front of us is busy fixing their make-up or tuning the radio to a new station.

So perhaps next time someone asks you why you think they should move to Ashburton – talk not of the mountains, the rivers, lakes and seas but of our cool and calm nature way of living.

That’s all most people want these days.

Or at least, so it seems.

YOUR VIEW Council critique Congratulations to Sue Newman on her piece in Saturday’s edition of the Guardian giving her views on how our district councillors are performing one year after the most recent local body election.

I feel it took real courage to put her opinions and observations

out in the public arena considering that she deals with our council on a weekly basis and may find some of her working relationships somewhat frayed following the article.

As the people who voted in these councillors, we rely heavily on what is portrayed in your newspaper each week to under-

stand what they are doing as a council and how each individual councillor is representing the community.

I must also say that, as a casual observer of the council, I completely agree with many of Sue’s comments and endorse her recommendation that our mayor take more of a cautious approach

with who she makes her closest allegiance with going forward.

She is a productive mayor who has become a strong and popular voice for the district, but there is always the threat of that popularity decreasing.

Congratulations to Sue, once again.

here are big numbers around our dairy industry – the $7.8 billion it contributes to the nation’s GDP; the nearly 12,000 farms, jobs and incomes for more than 40,000 New Zealanders.

But as with just about any enterprise, big or small, ongoing success to a large degree rides on the people involved, and their talent.

With an ageing population and relatively low unemployment, especially in the South Island, there’s a fight on to attract workers with the right skillset, attitude and motivation.

The dairy industry wants a good share of the best and brightest and that’s why we launched the Federated Farmers’ Dairy Apprenticeship this week.

At functions in Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Invercargill, we put the word out to anyone looking for a satisfying and rewarding career that they should take a look at dairy.

That fact is the dairy sector – despite its huge importance to our economy – is currently operating at a workforce deficit.

Too many current farmers/business owners and employees are working long hours, or farms are having to rely on migrant labour to cover staff gaps.

Talks on this apprenticeship started more than 18 months ago, long before the war of words heated up between the political parties over high levels of immigration.

The fact is Federated Farmers and the dairy sector have long had a ‘New Zealanders first’ workforce preference. The reliance on migrants in some districts is because we simply can’t find enough Kiwis to fill all the jobs going.

That’s what we’re working to turn around.

The old Farm Cadet scheme was how I got into the industry and eventual farm ownership, and this is a revival of that approach: committed employers showing the ropes to a new generation. The apprentices we take on now are our potential

The target for the pilot programme is for around 200 Federated Farmers’ apprentices on-farm across New Zealand over the coming months.

While it’s likely many of the apprentices will be younger – we’re targeting school leavers and there will be pre-employment courses to get prospective apprentices up to speed – there is no age limit. Career changers are one of the potential streams of candidates.

Whatever their age, we want people with the motivation and skills (or willingness to work hard and learn) to add value.

They’ll have to be Federated Farmers’ members and willing to sign up to our Farm Charter, which reinforces the goals of the Sustainable Dairying: Workplace Action Plan.

They’ll have to use tools such as a recognised payroll system, the Feds’ permanent employment agreements, and Dairy NZ’s Roster Building and Performance Review Templates.

HR and other training will be available to them, too.

There’s a lot at stake and there’s real determination to make this pilot programme deliver stellar results – for the apprentice and the farm.

Gunman’s secret plans Las Vegas sniper Stephen Paddock left no stone unturned before orchestrating the deadliest mass shooting in US history.

More details have emerged on the extraordinary planning the 64-year-old went to before he opened fire on a 22,000-strong crowd from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

At least 58 people were killed during the rampage.

Authorities said Paddock “extensively” planned the attack after discovering he set up cameras around the hotel to spy on police, even hiding one in a food service cart.

But now, a Wall Street Journal report reveals Paddock may have also had “target practice” in the desert near his home two days before the massacre.

Investigators have reportedly uncovered video footage from a home-surveillance system that shows Stephen Paddock driving alone to an area on the outskirts of Mesquite, Nevada, where locals go for target practice.

The footage shows Paddock heading to the area on the Friday before the Sunday attack, the official told the Journal. It was one spot where he reportedly practised shooting.

The video footage shows Paddock driving along a road that leads to a spot in the desert where everyone goes to shoot, the law-enforcement official added.

However, a range manager told the Journal Paddock had no military service record and never used his arsenal at the only shooting range within 32km of his home.

A spokeswoman for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Smoke hung thick inside the room – tinged with the scent of spent gunpowder and sporadically illuminated by a blinking fire-alarm light – when officers first stepped into Mandalay Bay’s Room 32-135, where Paddock, now dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, spent the previous three days building his sniper’s nest, according to the police in an interview with CBS TV’s 60 Minutes.

impossibility that a lone man in his 60s could have caused such carnage – only intensified the officers’ paranoia as they worked to clear the hazy hotel room, they said.

“It was still very much in my brain there’s 50 other dudes in here somewhere,” Detective Matthew Donaldson recalled.

“You know, we were still clearing that room, the curtains, moving the curtains.

“I wanted to make sure somebody wasn’t hiding between the windows and the curtains.”

They had reason to fear Paddock had help, though inves-

tigators later determined he acted alone.

The first person to reach the room, Mandalay Bay security guard Jesus Campos, was met with a hail of gunfire when he had approached the door just minutes before.

By the time Paddock was done shooting at Campos, who escaped with a leg injury, the door to his room looked like “Swiss cheese,” Officer David Newton said. Newton and other officers coming from the floor below struggled to open a stairwell door that Paddock had jammed shut with metal shims and screws.

Then they saw his splintered door room and a nearby roomservice cart with wires hanging off it, prompting fears it was booby-trapped.

It was later revealed that Paddock had installed a camera on the cart to watch for anyone coming to stop him.

As officers prepared to blast open what was left of Paddock’s door, they worried that the slightest noise could give away their positions – and lead to another volley of gunfire from the room. They eventually blasted open the door, revealing “an armoury” inside, according to Sgt. Joshua Bitsko.

Along with hundreds of spent casings, officers found Paddock’s lifeless body on the floor.

As cops stepped over the corpse and peered through smoke, the totality of Paddock’s sick project came into focus.

“Days of planning,” Bitsko said. “He had toolboxes, power tools to run wires for his surveillance systems. For everything that he had, it took him days to finish.”

Paddock boasted in text messages about his father Benjamin being a bank robber who escaped jail in 1969.

He wrote: “I didn’t have anything really to do with him but the bad streak is in my blood. I was born bad.”

Apartment-for-residency scheme Overseas investors are being offered off-the-plan Auckland apartments in a new property-forresidency scheme.

Conrad Funds Management is making the offer to investors seeking New Zealand residency and willing to buy a $750,000-plus Auckland apartment to qualify.

The Financial Markets Authority says it has no issues with the offers but people should get independent advice before buying in.

The business, associated with Robert Holden’s Conrad Properties Group, has issued the offer documents on two big Auckland apartment projects: Union & Co rising on Union St and The Vincent at 106 Vincent St. Patrick Middleton, Conrad Funds Management chief executive, said inquiries had so far come from potential investors from Singapore, Hong Kong and France, but no investments had yet been sold as the products were new.

“I do think the shape of our tax system needs to be looked at, particularly when you consider some of the widening gaps between rich and poor,” he told Newsroom.

“I think addressing that through redistribution, particularly with a capital gains tax, would certainly be something I’d like both (potential) governments to be considering.”

It is not the first time the BNZ boss has voiced his support for capital gains tax.

He told the Herald last December that he was a fan of the policy.

“I think that [the CGT] is about getting a more equitable distribution of tax base for investors,’’ he said at the time.

Capital gains tax ‘a priority’

Legal action is being threatened against the tax department, with a public workers’ union saying long-time staff are being made to take psychometric tests while reapplying for jobs.

Inland Revenue in July announced it would be cutting 1500 jobs – 30 per cent of its workforce – with 4200 jobs affected by changes.

The Public Service Association says the department has been calling on its staff to reapply to retain employment, often in jobs they have been doing for many years.

As part of the reapplication process, Inland Revenue has been coercing staff – including those who had been with the department for up to two decades and were experts in their fields – to take psychometric testing, PSA national secretary Erin Polaczuk said.

Calling the tests “absurd and wasteful”, Polaczuk is threatening to take the department to the Employment Court for a violation of its employees’ human rights.

Feds focus on Peters’ pledge Federated Farmers has called on Winston Peters to stand by the pre-election pledge he made at a public meeting in Ashburton.

Feds president Kate Milne said Peters told the meeting there should be no water tax and no livestock emissions (methane and nitrous oxide) into the ETS. “This was a bold statement and it gave farmers throughout the country a semblance of comfort and certainty after a tumultuous election campaign where they felt unfairly targeted.

“This week promises to be a defining period for negotiations to form a new government and Feds have asked that whoever governs is pragmatic about future actions.”

Federated Farmers is ready to work with any government. We are an advocacy organisation for farmers, it is our job to work with all government, and opposition, representatives,” Milne said.

“We anticipate that an incoming government is ready to ‘walk their talk’ when it comes to formulating and implementing policy.”

And we will be there to remind them of their ‘talk’, and help them with their ‘walk’ if required,” Milne said.

Obviously New Zealand First holds a strong hand in negotiations, she said, and during the election campaign the party strongly rejected the prospect of both a water and livestock emissions tax.

Federated Farmers wants these two taxes to be off the table, given the majority of New Zealanders voted for parties that were opposed to them.

Whoever does form the government will have to hit the ground running on a number of issues, including free trade agreement progress, Resource Management Act reform and increased awareness of biosecurity preparedness.

It has taken years to get to this point and it’s vital to New Zealand’s national interests as it will improve our global competitiveness and market access, Milne said.

“We recommend the incoming government recognises the importance of getting this free trade agreement over the line.”

Feds has also challenged the future powerbrokers to commit to increasing funding and support for biosecurity.

“We have a good biosecurity system but to make it the best in the world, further investment is required. Any incursions into this country have the potential to decimate our primary sector, the backbone of the New Zealand economy.

“And, that is a scenario no future government will want to be dealing with.”

Global dairy markets remain buoyant, however concrete signs of sustained supply growth from major exporters suggest global prices have peaked in the current cycle, according to Rabobank’s latest Global Dairy Quarterly.

The report said while milk production across the export regions is revving up, and the pace will accelerate in the coming months, rejuvenated import-purchasing from Chinese buyers should prevent the market from being overwhelmed.

“We are again seeing the export engine produce more milk with higher farmgate milk prices in most export regions the catalyst for a supply-side response,” Rabobank dairy analyst Emma Higgins said.

While the Oceania spring peak looms large, and Australia and New Zealand still remain on-track to increase production, China is expected to absorb much of this increase as an active buyer – at least in the short-term, Higgins said.

“Chinese milk supply has failed to keep up with demand, meaning that Chinese buyers have been increasingly active in recent months,” she said, “and this is a

trend that is expected to continue into 2018 – albeit, at a lower rate.”

Higgins said the outlook for commodity markets is for a balanced market to continue in the remainder of 2017.

“We’re not expecting to see much downside pressure on global dairy prices until early 2018, when the Northern Hemisphere ramps up their milk supply.”

According to the report dairy export volumes for the three months to July 2017 were 5 per cent higher compared to the prior year. This was a result of milk flows being 3 per cent higher over the same period and being supported by a return to the market of key buyers in export markets.

On-farm seasonal conditions at present are challenging for most parts of the country and this shows in August 2017 production, which is 1.6 per cent down on last year, the report said.

Based on global commodity price expectations across the remainder of the 2017/18 season, Rabobank has forecast a full-year farmgate milk price of $6.50/ kgMS.

Alliance strategy delivering results

Meat company Alliance Group is investing $54 million in capital expenditure in the co-operative over the next year.

Alliance chief executive David Surveyor told a supplier meeting in Methven yesterday, which was part of the group’s annual roadshow around the country, that the success of the co-operative’s business strategy meant it was in a position to re-invest to continue to build on its operational performance.

In addition to a pool payment, the company will have a bonus share issue and reward farmer shareholders by increasing their shareholding in the co-operative. The level will be based upon the supply of lambs, sheep, cattle, calves and deer during the 2017/18 season.

“Alliance is now a much fitter co-operative as a result of our focus on lifting efficiency and improving sales and marketing,” Surveyor said.

“We are making good progress against our key measures, with a stronger balance sheet, improved profitability and better livestock pricing for farmers.

“We’re working hard to ensure our improvements are sustainable through further investment, growing our value add and building our organisational capability.”

However, Alliance chairman Murray Taggart acknowledged that there were still plenty of improvements for the co-op to make, which he summarised as

Alliance was also keeping a close eye on advances in synthetic meat, he said, but at this stage the focus of those developments was being targeted at areas different to

where Alliance operated.

The annual roadshow programme, covering the North and South Islands, began in Dannevirke on October 2 and finishes in Fortrose on October 19.

concern meat industry Beef + Lamb New Zealand and the New Zealand Meat Industry Association are concerned by reports that the EU and UK have reached a “deal” to split the EU’s WTO tariff rate quotas following Brexit.

“Given the importance of the European Union and United Kingdom for New Zealand’s sheep and beef exports, stability and certainty is vital,” Beef + Lamb New Zealand chairman James Parsons said.

“The tariff rate quotas form part of the EU’s WTO commitments and are legally binding rights and obligations.

“The New Zealand sheep and beef industry is not seeking windfall gains from the Brexit process,” Parsons said.

“However, we cannot contemplate a situation where the quality or quantity of New Zealand’s existing WTO market access rights with the European Union or the United Kingdom are eroded.”

New Zealand Meat Industry Association chairman John Loughlin agreed.

“Media reports that the EU and UK are planning to propose splitting the quotas would erode the

quality of this access as we would lose the flexibility to respond to changes in demand for sheepmeat and beef across the EU28, aiding market stability, which is in the interests of both producers and consumers,” Loughlin said.

“The New Zealand red meat sector is open to creative and mutually acceptable solutions that would work for the UK, EU, and fully preserve the WTO rights of New Zealand and other quota holders. The key is full and proper consultation with New Zealand and all those other WTO members with an interest in the tariff rate quotas.

“We trust that the UK and EU will work with their trading partners in an open-minded and constructive fashion to find a solution that works to fully honour their legal obligations regarding their existing market access commitments to third countries.”

The European Union currently takes about half of New Zealand’s total global sheepmeat exports and all of these exports currently enter the EU duty-free. Without the dutyfree access an out-of-quota rate of 50 per cent would apply.

Fencing of waterways has proven very effective where it has been used to combat the risks of contamination from agriculture, AgResearch says.

AgResearch’s Professor Rich McDowell, the chief scientist for the Our Land and Water National Science Challenge, was speaking after the publication of a study looking at policies for fencing waterways on contamination loads in New Zealand waterways.

His paper was published in the American Journal of Environmental Quality.

The Ministry for the Environment’s Our Freshwater 2017 report indicated that urban waterways have the worst overall water quality in New Zealand, but much of the public focus in recent years has been on the impact of agriculture – particularly dairy farming – on waterways in rural areas.

“Fencing is very effective at reducing contaminant loads to waterways – by 10 to 90 per cent depending on the nature of the contaminants and local issues,” McDowell said.

“Fencing works especially well for the likes of E.coli or phosphorus contamination that

can result from animal waste or stream bank destabilisation.

However, fencing all waterways in New Zealand is impractical and in some places other good management practices may be more cost-effective.

“A combination of better awareness of the issues and the use of good management practices (including fencing) in the right place is starting to reverse degrading trends in the likes of phosphorus and sediment in the water over the last decade,” McDowell said.

Dairy farmers had invested in a major programme of fencing waterways to the equivalent of nearly 27,000km. They should continue to do so as it is effective at reducing waterway contamination, McDowell said.

“The fact that most of the contaminant load comes from areas not requiring fencing reflects the much greater number and areas occupied by small streams – potentially from steeper country where dairy farming is unlikely to be present.

“Other work also indicates that a substantial proportion of contaminant concentrations may be from natural sources.”

Environment Canterbury has welcomed the research, which it said backs the Canterbury Water Management Strategy’s approach of not relying solely on stock exclusion to improve the region’s waterways.

“We are working towards Good Management Practice by farmers throughout the region using Farm Environment Plans and setting load limits for nitrogen, frequently beyond GMP,” ECan chief scientist Tim Davie said. “FEPs aim to reduce the contaminant load in exactly the situations described in this research.”

While fencing riparian margins is important to keep stock out of waterways, and industry has taken large steps to make sure this happens, it is a common misconception that the Canterbury Land & Water Regional Plan requires fencing, he said.

“Farmers must meet nutrient limits set in the plan, which are often tougher in local catchments via sub-region rules,” Davie said, adding that they must also keep stock out of waterways in intensively-farmed areas but how they do that is largely over to them.

■ Lamb: Heat a dash of oil in a large heavy-based frying pan over a medium-high heat. Dust lamb shanks with seasoned flour then brown all over. Transfer to a casserole dish. (If you have a casserole dish that can go from stovetop-to-oven, then use that).

■ Lower the heat and add the onion and cook until just soft, 5-7 minutes. Add spices, chilli and lemon rind and cook until aromatic, about 1 minute.

■ Add vegetable stock, tomatoes, capsicum, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce and brown sugar. Bring to the boil, season and pour over the lamb shanks.

The liquid should just cover the lamb shanks. Place on a tight fitting lid and place in the oven to cook for 2 hours.

■ After an hour, slice garlic bulbs

in half horizontally and place in a piece of foil. Drizzle with a little oil then wrap up tightly. Place in the oven beside the lamb shanks and roast until the cloves are very soft.

■ Remove lamb shanks from the oven and add the orzo. Return to the oven and cook for a further half hour. The orzo should be al dente and the meat almost falling off the bone.

■ To serve: Give each person a half of roasted garlic to squeeze over their lamb shanks.

■ Slow cooker option: Place all ingredients except orzo in slow cooker and cook on low for 8-9 hours (or high for 4-4 1/2 hours).

Cook orzo seperately and add before serving.

Ashburton’s Passchendaele W

T

his Thursday, October 12, marks the centenary of one of New Zealand’s darkest days at

war.

Not only one awful day, the Battle of Passchendaele was a series of Allied offensives during World War One, occurring between July 31 and November 10, 1917.

The offensives were an attempt by the British Allies to gain control of a series of ridges in West Flanders, Belgium, a region vital to the war effort due to its proximity to the coast.

Following the German invasion of Belgium in 1914, the Battle of Passchendaele became one in a series of Allied attempts to reclaim Belgium, and is also known as the Third Battle of Ypres.

Before the war, Belgium was guaranteed as a neutral country by the Treaty of London. This had made Germany’s invasion particularly shocking.

The extraordinary violence, illegality and surprise nature of the invasion motivated a strong international response to help the Belgians.

Ashburtonians’ support was no exception, with efforts mounted throughout the Dominion to build a Belgian Relief Fund.

Belgian Relief Fund On August 23, 1914, the Hawke’s Bay Tribune newspaper announced the Belgian Relief Fund. The response was immediate. On its first day, the fund raised £724, or over $110,000 in today’s money.

The following week, Mr Whitlock, the editor of the newspaper, wrote a letter, published in the Ashburton Guardian, asking that Ashburton people contribute to the fund.

The Guardian’s editor was “most sympathetic” to the idea. He pledged to receive and acknowledge local subscriptions to the fund.

Within two days, Ashburton people had donated £490, equal to $75,045 today, and over the following eight months, a total of £6394 ($934,331 today) was raised.

The fund continued throughout the war. On October 6, 1917, the Ashburton County Council, donated £1794 ($217,443 today), in addition to the private donations of Ashburton’s citizens.

A fete and its queen On April 29, 1915, the Ashburton Belgian Relief Fund held a fete at the A&P showgrounds to raise extra funds.

This fete was an exceptional occasion in New Zealand, as it was the only event held for the Belgian Relief Fund to receive the patronage of the Belgian King Albert.

It is for this reason that Ashburton’s Albert Street was given

Dave Gallaher

hile not an Ashburtonian, Dave Gallaher was an inspiration and hero to many.

He captained New Zealand’s 1905-06 national team, known as the Original All Blacks.

The first to tour outside Australasia, they played in the United Kingdom, France and Canada, winning 37 of 38 games.

Dave was one of 320 New Zealanders who died on October 4, 1917, in the attack on Gravenstafel Spur, during & Battle of Passchendaele. He features in the Balls Bullets and Boots: From Rugby Field to Battlefield exhibition at Ashburton Museum.

its name.

Trains from Methven, Christchurch, Timaru and Mt Somers offered reduced fares and return trains left at later times than usual to ensure a healthy attendance.

The owners of taxi cars also donated half of their profits to the fund.

The event included a Queen of the Carnival competition, won by Miss Harrison of Rakaia.

Total proceeds from the event were £13,012 12s 11d, ($1,901,400 today).

Of this, the Queen of the Carnival competition alone raised close to £7000, comparable to that raised by Christchurch at their competition. A remarkable effort for what was then a small town.

When we think of World War One, we readily think of how troops came together to fight for King and Country.

Yet, as the success of the Belgian Relief Fund, and the Ashburton Fete and Queen of the Carnival shows,

people at home also came together to help relieve wartime hardships for those less fortunate, far away on the other side of the world.

Charles de Chain Denshire

orn in 1882, he was the only son of William and Fannie of Thetford Farm, Seafield.

Charles attended Ashburton High School from 1891 to 1899.

He was regarded as one of the best cricketers and footballers the school had produced, and was prominent in tennis, shooting, golf and fishing.

He worked for the National Mortgage and Agency Company, where he was in charge of the grain and merchandise departments.

He enlisted in January, 1916, and was killed in action on October 12, 1917, on Bellevue Spur, during the Battle of Passchendaele.

At his death, National Mortgage flew their flag at halfmast as a sign of respect.

Leonard John Greenslade

he son of William and Alice, Leonard was educated at Borough School while the family were living in Allenton.

He later lived in Anama, then Tinwald.

An enthusiastic footballer, he held the medal for the seven-a-side tournament and was an original member of the Cadet Corps formed in 1906.

At high school he was known as Beetle, along with his friends Sutton and Kingham, known as Stalky and Turkey. Leonard enlisted in June 1915 and was killed in Palestine in November 1917.

Sadly, his remains were never located by the Commonwealth War Grave Commission.

Although the location of his burial was detailed in his war record, he lies, unmarked, somewhere in a foreign field, a reminder that New Zealanders fought and died in many places.

Honouring the Fallen During the period of World War One, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return — almost 450 from Ashburton were killed.

The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 — the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men.

The Ashburton Museum with the assistance of the Rotary

Club of Ashburton, has erected in front of the Museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag.

An original flag is on display in the museum. In brief Silver for Schmidt Rio Olympian Dylan Schmidt has won silver at the trampoline World Cup in Spain. Twenty-year-old Schmidt, who finished seventh in Rio last year, is improving with every competition on the world stage.

Despite battling knee and groin problems, he finished sixth at the World Cup in Belarus in August, then fourth in Portugal last week.

His silver medal came after he qualified for the finals with a personal best of 111.495. Schmidt produced an excellent voluntary routine which landed him silver.

Bateman has already had three runner-up finishes on the tour and wasn’t going to allow this victory to slip away.

Crusaders to the fore

Despite some less than ideal weather, the Rakaia Pony Club’s hosting of the Springston Trophy is being chalked up as a success.

“The weather wasn’t what we wished for, but the grounds held up and it couldn’t have gone any better,” Rakaia Pony Club president Vanessa Wilcox said.

“We only had one injury, which came during the dressage, so we were quite fortunate in that regard.

“There was some bad luck for that team as they lost a horse the day before the event as well.”

Prior to the start of the competition, two thirds of the crosscountry course was redesigned, ready to host the event.

“The cross-country course was challenging but it rode well which is great,” she said.

“It will be something we will be able to train on now and have open events in the future.”

Thirty-nine teams from around the South Island attended the

event, with the Halswell Crusaders finishing on top of the pile with a total score of 130.23.

View Hill took out second and third, with View Hill Red securing second with 141.60 points, closely followed by View Hill Silver on 142.80.

The highest finishing team from Mid Canterbury was Rakaia Black, who finished 19th.

“It was quite cool as the Halswell team had the Crusaders music playing when they did their lap of honour,” Wilcox said.

Hosting such a large event was not an easy exercise for the small club, with plenty of help being called in during the lead-up.

“We had kids that used to ride coming back to help and there was a lot of sponsorship and grants to make the event go ahead,” she said.

“The organising committee put in a lot of work so they will be taking a well-deserved rest.

“It was great to get so much positive feedback and to see the kids having fun.”

Lowe breakaway gets the result Building on his recent good form in the Calder Stewart elite race series, Stu Lowe secured victory in Tinwald Cycling Club’s ACL, Small Business Accounting (SBA), 32km handicap event around the Wakanui Beach block on Sunday.

A good field of riders went to the starting line in the grey spring-like weather conditions.

Lowe and his fellow scratch markers found the front of the race in the concluding stages.

Lowe attacked with 4km to go, establishing a break that his co-markers were unable to close.

Steve Hands found the line strongly to secure second place honours.

Alex Hooper claimed the final podium position with Darrell Kircher, Tony Ward, and Nigel Douglas rounding out the top six places.

Lowe’s efforts also saw him claim fastest time honours, riding the course in 45.47.

With a large number of junior riders competing in the Junior Tour of Southland and inclement weather, there was no junior race.

Next week the club will contest a 38km handicap event around the Wakanui – Hakatere course.

Team New Zealand Oklahoma Thunder star Russell Westbrook has made his allegiances clear in any trans-Tasman battle.

Plan ‘nearly backfired’ Steve Hansen has virtually admitted that sending five players straight to Cape Town could have cost the All Blacks a defeat.

The Springboks nearly completed a stunning reversal, coming agonisingly close to victory against the team which smashed them 57-0 at Albany.

The All Black coach said he had “rolled the dice a bit” in an effort to leave more petrol in the squad’s tank for the end-of-season northern hemisphere tour.

It almost backfired though.

The All Blacks were taken to the wire by the Springboks, with the young outside backs coming to the rescue after the forwards copped a battering.

Sam Whitelock, Sam Cane, Liam Squire, Ryan Crotty and Lima Sopoaga bypassed the test in Buenos Aires.

Cane and Sopoaga were noticeably sluggish while Whitelock seemed to fade after a big start.

Hansen indicated at least some of them were off their game in Cape Town.

“Why we did that was not so much for here, but for the end of year( tour),” he said.

“They hadn’t played for three weeks, and were probably half a game short.

“We saw that in their performance – they were a split second off where they are capable of being.

“They felt that themselves, talking to them afterwards.

“Hopefully we’ll get the benefits of doing what we’ve done somewhere like Cardiff.”

Sopoaga buzzing There are few more arduous rugby experiences than a fired-up Springboks side at home, All Blacks playmaker Lima Sopoaga says.

That’s what makes Sunday’s 25-24 win in Cape Town all the sweeter.

Fresh off the birth of his daughter in the last fortnight, the 26-yearold Sopoaga came off the bench before half-time due to Beauden Barrett’s concussion. He bagged a penalty goal and two conversions as the Kiwis inched over the line.

“That’s why you play football, isn’t it? These big moments, big clashes. You can’t not feed off the vibe here.”

Bledisloe targeted

“He knows he can get the recovery done.

“He hasn’t had much luck, poor bugger.

“But he’s playing well and it’s a good time of the year for it to happen I guess ... he wouldn’t have been playing for some of those months.”

The All Blacks will take 37 players on the northern hemisphere tour.

There will be no need to take an apprentice this time.

“The last spots are always difficult, we’re always open to change, to any mind boggling inspirational thought late in the piece,” Hansen said.

Hansen said South Africa’s big men got on a roll early in the Newlands test, and he likened

that to trying to deal with that to stopping a barrel rolling down a hill.

“It gets harder and harder to stop,” he said. * He hailed the development of prop Ofa Tu’ungafasi saying he had “grown an arm and a leg” based on improved scrum technique and a belief he now belonged in the All Black environment.

“It’s one of the reasons I coach – I love seeing people come into the environment, get better, do things they couldn’t before,” he said.

“Maybe they didn’t believe in themselves, didn’t have help.”

Hansen said scrum coach Mike Cron had “done extraordinary things with him.”

Smith or McKenzie – who gets the nod?

Forget Damian McKenzie – Ben Smith is far and away the All Blacks’ best bet at fullback for the World Cup. That’s the verdict from commentator Jeff Wilson, one of New Zealand’s finest outside backs, despite McKenzie’s blistering displays in Buenos Aires and Cape Town.

Springbok great Joel Stransky also entered the debate, plumping for Smith although he suggested it was a close call.

Wilson was unequivocal on the matter, saying: “There’s no doubt Damian McKenzie is one exciting player to watch.

“But gosh we’ve got short memories. He (Smith) is the best fullback in world rugby on both sides of the ball.

“There is no doubt there are fantastic things this young kid McKenzie can do. He can create something out of nothing, has great acceleration, has all those wonderful attacking things.

“But you should never get blinded by one aspect of the game.

Stransky said the choice was “a tough one”, but with Smith’s more physical game vital in the World Cup. “Ben Smith is an unbelievable player who brings huge experience and commitment. He has a different type of game to Damian McKenzie,” Stransky said.

“There is no doubt there is a place for Damian McKenzie. He showed on the weekend tremendous acceleration, unbelievable pace. You give him a little bit of space and he’s courageous in the way he carries the ball forward.

Vowing to bounce back A gutted Scott McLaughlin is reflecting how he went from the penthouse to the outhouse at Bathurst over the weekend.

The 24-year-old Kiwi produced the fastest ever lap around Mt Panorama in a dominant top 10 shootout performance that had the entire sport talking.

His flying lap was compared to his hero Greg Murphy’s 2003 shootout lap that became known as the “Lap of the Gods” – one of the most memorable performances at the iconic race.

But despite starting from pole McLaughlin’s race did not go to plan.

He completed just 25 laps before handing over his car to French co-driver Alex Premat.

During Premat’s stint the Shell V-Power Ford’s engine started losing power.

The team tried everything to rectify the problem while keeping the #17 car on the lead lap.

But on lap 75 it gave up altogether heading up the mountain, ending McLaughlin’s dreams of winning.

“I am gutted, I think if it was an all dry race, potentially, we had a really good car,” McLaughlin told Speedcafe.

“Who knows?

“Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I felt like we had a really strong car in the race so to not be able to show that.

“It just leaves you wondering.

“It is a bit of a weird feeling.

Getting out, my last lap was lap 24, so it was pretty weird.

“You can’t do anything about it.

Bring it on. That was the message from new Supercars series leader Fabian Coulthard to Walkinshaw Racing’s revamped 2018 team despite their threat becoming apparent at the Bathurst 1000.

Coulthard had to settle for third in Sunday’s Great Race after being held out by WR’s Scott Pye for second as Holden’s David Reynolds claimed his maiden crown. It marks the first time since Darwin that McLaughlin has not been atop the standings but he

is hoping to turn that around on the streets of the Gold Coast in a fortnight.

“I don’t mind being the chaser for once for a while, it is nice too,” said McLaughlin.

“We know we are fast at the Gold Coast.

“I feel like it is a good track for both of us and the last few races after that we should be okay.

“It is going to be a good battle for the championship, not only between me and Fabian, but also Jamie.”

“I had a good early battle for the front with Fernandez but sec-

ond at the finish is great.

“At this late stage in the championship I’m focused on the title so I really wasn’t going to do anything silly in order to win,” he said.

“The car was great, we managed to stay clear of the incidents that brought out the safety car and three podium finishes take us closer to our goal.

“All in all I am happy with the weekend’s results.

“Now for the final,” Armstrong said.

Tournament time for young basketballers Two Mid Canterbury basketball sides are ready to test their skills against other South Island sides.

Both the Mid Canterbury under 13 boys side and under 13 girls side made their way to their respective tournaments yesterday.

Play gets under way today, with both teams competing in the agrades of their tournaments.

Victory in the penultimate round of the SUPER GT series in Thailand overnight has catapulted Auckland’s Nick Cassidy back into the lead of the championship in his Lexus LC500. “It was an amazing weekend,” said Cassidy. “There were scattered thunderstorms all weekend, which made conditions very tricky.” With co-driver Ryo Hirakawa, the pair led from start to finish of the 300 kms race, having started from pole position.

They have become the first driver pairing to win more than one round this year.

Armstrong edging closer to F4 title A triple podium finish at the penultimate round has propelled Christchurch driver Marcus Armstrong closer to the Italian Formula 4 title.

Racing on the 5.2 km Mugello circuit under cloudy skies that threatened but never delivered rain, Armstrong was second in the first race, won the second race from pole position and was third in the final race of the weekend.

Still the joker At last, cult hero David Reynolds can be taken seriously as a Supercars driver after claiming his maiden Bathurst title. Still, it was hard to tell. Reynolds still very much looked like the joker of the pack with his wild celebrations after claiming his maiden Great Race in treacherous conditions. After crossing the line four seconds ahead of Scott Pye, the 32-yearold lit up the miserable conditions at Mount Panorama off the track.

He pretended to fall asleep on top of his car after triumphantly getting out of his Holden following the 161-lap classic. Then he emerged on the winner’s podium wildly piggy-backing co-driver Luke Youlden.

Meeke charges back Citroen’s Kris Meeke mastered the final two legs of Rally Spain to win by 28 seconds, just three rounds after his form sank to such a low that he was dropped. Four-time defending world champion Sebastien Ogier fended off team-mate Ott Tänak to claim second by 5 seconds. Title rival Thierry Neuville retired on the final day with broken suspension and Ogier can secure the crown at the penultimate round in Britain later this month.

Their M-Sport World Rally Team moved within touching distance of a first manufacturers’ title since 2007. The Ford Fiesta pair need only finish in Britain, irrespective of their overall placings, to take the championship.

Huge race for Pither The honours went to David Reynolds at Bathurst, but there was another success story. Kiwi Chris Pither and partner Dale Wood managed to finish fourth in their Erebus Holden, benefiting from a steady and consistent day, where they managed to stay out of trouble.

Immediate future uncertain The possibility of a rescheduled Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) will keep Volkstok’n’barrell at home for the time being.

Saturday’s abandonment of the Hawke’s Bay meeting prior to the running of the weight-forage feature has placed the multiple Group One winner’s spring programme somewhat in limbo.

“I was going to send him to Sydney to race next weekend, but the flight is going through Christchurch which makes it even longer,” said Donna Logan, who trains the son of Tavistock with Chris Gibbs.

“That wouldn’t be ideal for him after going down to Hastings and back. We’re going to wait and see if the Livamol is going to be run in a fortnight’s time and, if it is, we’ll go there.

This season, he finished in behind the placegetters when resuming under 64.5kg in an open sprint at Ruakaka and was then a close fifth in the Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate (1600m) at Hastings last month.

Monbet back on track Champion trotter Monbet is on target for a comeback run at the Ashburton workouts next Tuesday after pleasing Canterbury co-trainer Greg Hope with his work on the beach.

Monbet threw a scare into the Hope camp when he had some heat in a front leg about three weeks ago.

A scan showed some aggravation of a minor injury he sustained in his three-year-old season, but Hope said on Monday that it was now “under control’’.

After a brief rest he has been “working well’’ on Woodend Beach for the last seven days.

“His training has been good. He trotted around on the beach this morning (Monday) and I was happy with his work.

“We’ll just see how he progresses over the next week and whether he goes to the trials next week we will play it by ear.

“He’s still got a good chance to make the (NZ) cup meeting all things going good.

“We are happy with him and each day he seems that much better. He was trotting well today.’’

If he comes through next Tuesday well he will be aimed at the $30,000 Ashburton Flying Mile (1609m mo-

Sport Massive win for Coll Kiwi squash player Paul Coll has claimed the biggest scalp of his career in beating top seed Karim Abdel Gawad in the first round of the US Open in Philadelphia. Ranked 10th in the world but unseeded at the tournament, Coll put on a typically gritty display to beat the current world No.2 in 74 minutes. Coll won 11-8 11-3 6-11 11-8, and described the victory as one of his best ever. “It’s definitely one of the most significant wins of my career,” the Greymouthborn 25-year-old said.

It’s been seven years in the making, but Patrick O’Reilly finally had cause to walk out to the stables yesterday morning and smile when he locked his eyes on troublesome trotter, No Fears.

After pushing his trainer, and co-owner, to almost every imaginable boundary over the past few years, the big horse with the big motor finally put everything together and broke through for his maiden victory at Timaru on Sunday.

And hopefully, it’s just the start of things to come for the wellbred gelding.

“Immaturity has been his problem, in fact he’s been a bit of a mongrel at times,” O’Reilly said.

“But the motor has always

been there, we’ve never doubted that – it’s just been a bit of a character building experience to get him to here.

“We’ve brought him in and worked him up and turned him out again quite a few times.”

From the top-producing mare, Without Fear, No Fears was bred

by Michelle Baird, who now shares in the ownership with O’Reilly, and the path to get to Sunday has been a long and treacherous one.

He can’t be fast-worked like almost every other racehorse in the country, so he does all his fitness work through jogging.

“There wouldn’t be another horse in New Zealand who does as much jogging as what he does I wouldn’t think.

“You just can’t work him with anything else.

“I still work my horses on the roadside, but we’ve only just started to even think about taking him down there, he’s getting better but it’s been a long road.”

Due to his tumultuous manners, O’Reilly was quick to enlist the services of his brother Gerard to drive the gelding, but despite feeling the raw power in front of him, even the driver has had his moments.

“I think he tried to sack himself off him once – but I was deaf that day.

“I’ve had a lot of advice on how I should train him over the years too.”

With win number one out of the way, the hope is that it will be onwards and upwards for No Fears from here on and he’ll get to measure up to the next grade when he lines up at Ashburton

on Labour Day Monday.

“Ashburton will suit him, it’s big and roomy – Gerard doesn’t think he’s quite as good on the grass so we will steer clear of that for now.

“I think Addington is going to end up being his sort of track though, it’s really good for the trotters at the moment.”

One of six horses O’Reilly has in work at the moment, No Fears is joined in the racing team by maiden pacer, Carbonado, recent winner Sheez Good and fellow trotter, Agatha Tyron who will head to Methven this Sunday.

“That’s more horses than I have had in work for a long time,” O’Reilly said.

No Fears’ win on Sunday took O’Reilly to 470 career training wins.
