Mayor Favel humbled by win

Two days ago she was Donna Favel, cinema owner and Ashburton District councillor; today she is the district’s number one local body politician with the title ‘mayor’ on her office door.

Favel, 51, is the district’s first female mayor and most likely the youngest in the district’s history to win the job.

And she won in style, beating incumbent Angus McKay by a solid margin, 6329 votes to 4971, and with more than 98 per cent of votes counted, the outcome will not change.

Relaxing at home yesterday before heading out for a family lunch, Favel admits to a mix of feelings as she reflected on her win – excitement, delight and a fair dose of humility.

The decision to stand for the mayoralty was a long time in the making.

“I did a lot of soul searching and reflected on how I’d fit the rest of my life around this. I was buoyed after the last election being the highest polling councillor and that was flattering. I was optimistic and I was nervous, but I guess having a job where I work with the pub-

lic gave me a voter base,” she said.

Favel knows she’ll have a lot to learn as she transitions from councillor to mayor and said she is looking forward to going to ‘mayors’ school’ in Wellington next week.

There will also be a Methven retreat where councillors, mayor and senior staff get to know one another and are given an insight into the workings of council.

She’s keen to learn, happy to take advice and says she’ll then filter that so it fits what’s best for the community.

on experience, and yes there are likely to be some strong opinions around the council table, but she believes they will all become contributors and leaders in some way. It’s about empowerment, she said.

“I’m delighted with the people who’ve ended up on council. The community chose the team and while we don’t have a lot of local government experience what I can say is that among the new councillors there is a lot of chairman experience.”

While she won’t be officially sworn in as mayor until October 28, said she is planning a collective leadership style.

“We are the team. No one of us, including myself, is bigger than the team; we are all elected to the job. I hope there will be leaders among the councillors and we can move forward together.”

Favel knows that adopting that collective leadership style will mean she has to make changes in the way she thinks too.

Cigarettes target of Methven burglary The Ashburton District has been hit by its second burglary in less than a week where cigarettes have been the number one target.

Thieves broke into Methven’s Mobil Service Station and Super Value Supermarket around 4am on Saturday, making off with a quantity of cigarettes and tobacco.

Police want to hear from anyone who may have heard or seen anything suspicious around the two businesses and they are also interested in sightings of a white early model Toyota Caldina in and around Methven at the time.

On Wednesday Rakaia’s Four Square store was hit by thieves who used a jemmy bar to force open a door. They grabbed cigarettes, tobacco and rolling paper.

The burglary occurred at about 4.18am and the thieves are believed to have arrived at the scene in a black Nissan Navara flat-decked ute, reported stolen from Ashburton.

The vehicle was seen to head north, crossing the Rakaia bridge before turning on Rakaia Road where it was abandoned.

The offenders are described as wearing very distinctive cloth-

ing and carrying a distinctive bag.

The upsurge in thefts of cigarettes and tobacco is a concern for police, who say that while the number of thefts in Ashburton is low, a number of Christchurch businesses have been hit in recent weeks, and the Ashburton events could be part of the trend.

“We know that cigarettes and tobacco have always been popular with thieves, with some anecdotal evidence suggesting that these small, high value items are targeted in small business burglaries and robberies.

“We continue to work with large and small retailers providing advice and support to help improve security and make their premises less attractive for thieves,” a police spokesperson said.

Police are warning the public that anyone buying cigarettes and tobacco they knew were stolen could result in prosecution.

Anyone with information about the burglaries is asked to call Christchurch Police on 03 363 7400.

Alternatively information can be shared anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Methven voters spoilt for choice When ballot papers were printed for the 2013 local body elections, the Methven Community Board struggled to find enough willing candidates.

This time round voters in the board’s catchment were spoilt for choice with seven candidates seeking five seats. Four sitting members were seeking

re-election, with the fifth Liz McMillan standing (successfully) for the Ashburton District Council’s western ward.

The four members last term, Hamish Gilpin, Dan McLaughlin, Sarah Lock and Sonia McAlpine, were all returned and have been joined by Ron Smith.

Former mayor disappointed

Just hours after suffering a crushing defeat in his efforts to secure a third term as Ashburton’s mayor, Angus McKay says he’s disappointed but philosophical about the outcome.

“That’s life. The people of the Ashburton District through the democratic process were Angus obviously looking for a new direction and it’s my hope the new council takes this on board,” he said.

McKay has served two terms as mayor, winning his seat from Bede O’Malley who also served two terms.

In losing the mayoralty, McKay ends an association with local government that spans 18 years.

He served from1998 to February 2010 (when commissioners were appointed) as an Environment Canterbury councillor and won the mayoralty in Ashburton in October 2010.

You can’t pretend McKay losing is easy, McKay said, but he was quick to congratulate the victor, Donna Favel.

“When the results came out the chief executive phoned me and said, I’m sorry Angus, you haven’t been successful. I then rang Don-

na and congratulated her and wished her the best,” he said.

He says he can look back over the past six years as mayor and know that during those two terms the council wrapped up some very good projects.

“In my opinion the art gallery and heritage centre project was too far down the track to alter the checks and balances, but the EA Networks Centre coming in under budget, we got that right because we had a community committee overseeing it; we used local knowledge.”

The second urban bridge might have created a lot of community angst, but as a project it was one he believes the community wants and needs.

“This should be moved forward if possible, but that’s unlikely with NZTA funding.”

As a member of the Canterbury mayoral forum, McKay said the mayors of Canterbury could collectively look at some big achievements over the past six years – significant work on behalf of the district’s migrant communities, the growth of the fibre optic network through wider Canterbury and a collective deal that boosted tourism through increased direct international flights into Christchurch Airport.

Looking ahead, McKay said it was too early to make plans. His Methven farm is leased to a cousin so farming full time is unlikely.

“However, my wife Mary has a very good position at Mt Hutt College and we’ve no intention to move away.”

years were made in the belief that they were best for the Ashburton District.

“In every circumstance I did my best. At times I found it difficult as the chairman of any board does, to carry out council’s decisions but I have no regrets about the way I did it. I believe I fully honoured council decisions at all times.”

He looks at the new team of councillors and their mayor and says they’ll have a settling in period, but that this will be made much easier by the very professional senior staff the council now has on the payroll.

“They will assist the council in the options they can take; it’s up to the councillors to use their hearts and their heads to work out which options are best for the community going forward.”

Plenty of new faces in team of councillors

The new-look team of Ashburton District councillors is heavy on new faces and light on local government experience.

When the votes were tallied the district has found itself led by a new mayor, seven newcomers to the council table and just five people with council experience, two of those only in their second term.

While Donna Favel is the district’s new mayor and the first female to hold the position, her job will be made easier by having already spent two terms as a district councillor. Her new team sees Peter Reveley, Stuart Wilson, Neil Brown, Russell Ellis and Alasdair Urquhart return to the table. They will be joined by newcomers Liz McMillan, Lynette Lovett, Mark Malcolm, Leen Braam,

Diane Rawlinson, Thelma Bell and Selwyn Price.

Favel’s new urban team is strong on ties with the Ashburton Citizens’ Association with Rawlinson, Price, Ellis, Urquhart and western ward councillor Reveley all having or having had an association with the organisation.

In the last term of council that association often saw councillors voting as a citizens’ block and those ties could see votes tied in this council term as Favel also has links with the association.

New face in the Western Ward, McMillan might be new to the council table, but she brings with her a strong local government background from her nine years around the Methven Community Board table.

The Eastern Ward will see two newcom-

ers in Lovett and Malcolm join the experienced Wilson representing the interests of their patch.

Lovett is no stranger to board tables having been president of the Ashburton A&P association.

She is involved in several rural organisations and will be familiar with the workings of council through her membership of the council’s road reference group.

Fellow newcomer, Malcolm has worked in and owned businesses in the Ashburton District.

While there will be five new urban councillors most have some governance experience through school or community organisations, with Rawlinson having chaired the citizens’ association and national livestock organisaitons.

Butchery in line for top medal

A boutique butchery in Methven is in the running for a top medal in the annual New Zealand sausage competition.

Drycreekmeats is in just its second year of business and is developing a huge following online for its handcrafted sausages and sustainably farmed meat.

Co-owner Mikyla Grant said it was a huge thrill to be in the medals, considering it was their first time entering.

Medallists from around the country have all been notified and the details, along with supreme sausage winner and people’s choice, will be announced in Auckland on October 13.

“We know we have a gold, a sil-

ver or a bronze, but we don’t know which sausage category or which medal,” Grant said.

The butchery sells goods online to customers all around New Zealand, the meat couriered overnight in chilled containers.

It also operates a homekill service.

Board a mix of experience, new blood Voters have gone for the perfect mix of experience and new blood in choosing the new Ashburton Trust board.

With two out of six of the last board retiring at this year’s local body elections, the door was open for a lineup of new faces around the meeting table.

This year the trust attracted one of its strongest line-ups of candidates, with 11 seeking six places.

Festival set to entertain

The Ashburton Indian Multicultural Society is inviting the community to celebrate another Diwali Festival.

The popular Diwali Night celebrations are planned for October 15 and people are invited to come join in the singing and dancing.

Ashburton Indian Multicultural Society President Bikash Sukul said this year is the ninth time they will be celebrating in Ashburton.

The event starts at 6.30pm in the Balmoral Hall and entry is $5 at the door.

Sukul said they will be lighting candles and hopefully having a fireworks display if the weather permits.

There will also be dinner and sweets will be provided.

He said people are also welcome to dress in Indian costumes and there will be a catwalk parade of the best dressed.

Sukul said last year they had over 400 people attend, with guests travelling from all over including Christchurch, Timaru, Oamaru and Waimate.

Sunckell wins ECan seat Mayor humbled The Ashburton District’s voice around the Environment Canterbury meeting table will be carried by Leeston farmer John Sunckell.

He won the single seat that represents the district’s environmental interests from Nicky Snoyink and John Foster.

He is a third generation farmer and for the past five years has been involved with the Selwyn/Waihora zone committee.

Sunckell will join six other regional councillors and the six government appointed commissioners who will form the regional council’s first partially elected board.

Commissioners have run the regional council since early 2010 when the board of the time was disbanded.

Sunckell received 10,694 votes, Snoyink, 8944 and Foster 4049.

Voter interest in the regional council election was low, just 39 per cent.

She’s not making promises – on any issue – but says when it comes to the project of the moment, a new civic centre and library, she wants the council to pause and take a breath so new councillors can come up to speed and make an informed decision.

Life as the district’s mayor will mean changes in the Favel household, with husband David now taking over full management of their Regent Cinema.

He’s been the support team during the past six years and says he’s happy to continue in that job, doing whatever his wife needs to ensure she can do the mayor’s job and do it well.

Chance reunites man, car

I

t was a chance look on Trademe that reunited a Methven man with the vintage car he had restored over 30 years ago.

Frank Sandys was looking on Trademe one day in February ealier this year when he came across a strikingly similar ’38 Morris Eight.

Sandys had originally bought the same car after his father heard about one sitting in a shed in Racecourse Road.

“I bought it way back, about 37 years ago, so that would be in 1979,” he said.

Sandys said the car needed a lot of work, he bought it for around $700 but must have spent about $3500 to $4000 restoring it.

“I restored it, the whole thing right through from the motor, to the body and upholstery and the chrome,” he said.

The car was used for around six years in rallies and similar outings before he eventually sold it in 1986 for about $3800.

Skip forward 30 years and Sandys said he was just browsing Trademe and came across the listing by chance.

“It was just by chance, I don’t normally go and look at Morris Eights and I just happened to go on there and I thought ‘gee that looks like my car’,” he said.

However, Sandys couldn’t remember what the licence plate number of the car had been when he sold it so he wasn’t totally sure if it was his or not.

But fortunately, just before Christmas, his children had given him a photo album containing photos of when he did the car up.

“I got that just before Christmas so I opened it up and sure enough, there was my number plate.

“So I rung the fella up and the car was over at the coast and I told him I was the feller who restored it and he told me how much he had enjoyed it,” he said.

“About two hours later I rang

him back and said get it down here and I’ll have a look at it and most likely buy it back,” he said.

So the car came down and Sandys bought it back off the seller,

who was pleased at being offered what he had originally wanted it for.

“It’s good to have it back, once you’ve done it up yourself you have

something about it.

“And of course it looks like an old car now, but when I was growing up it was about all we could afford,” he said.

Calamity coming to Methven

Methven Theatre Company actors rehearsing for Calamity Dame will be hitting their performance peak this week when the show opens.

That’s according to the show’s director Chris Woods, who is looking forward to opening night on Wednesday.

“I think we are definitely right on track to be peaking at opening.

It’s gone really well,” Woods said.

Cast members were getting into the comedic vibe of the show and having fun at rehearsals for the musical comedy pantomime.

Final dress rehearsals would be staged tonight and tomorrow night.

“I enjoy comedy, I enjoy making things funny,” said the 31-year-old Bachelor of Music graduate who works as a Methven-based farming and ploughing contractor.

Woods is overseeing a wide range of experience levels among his large cast of 24 members.

There are the more seasoned performers, and then there are some at the other end of the spectrum, who have never been in a show.

“I dragged a couple of friends in, they have come along leaps and bounds,” he said.

It is the second Mid Canterbury production this year for Gavin Templeton, who plays lead Calamity Dame, and for Dayle

Stoliker, who plays bad guy Frankston Frugal. Both starred in Variety Theatre Ashburton’s Oliver earlier this year, Stoliker as Fagin and Templeton as Mr Bumble.

Templeton directed Variety Theatre Ashburton productions that Woods starred in about 10 years ago. They were Jesus Christ Superstar and Just the Boyz.

So it has been a complete turn around of roles for Templeton and Woods, with Woods in the director’s seat for his first time round.

Templeton said he was enjoying playing the female lead, despite the difference between his actual age of 56 and the age of his character, in her 20s.

“I hold my age well,” Templeton said.

“I don’t do any moisturising, but makeup will hide a lot of the creases and wear-and-tear,” the Ashburton BNZ bank officer said.

“I look like a cross between the Twisted Sister band member and Elly May Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies.”

His theatre experience stretches back to 1982 in Ashburton, and he has been involved in more than 50 productions, and also directed about seven and written about six. He and wife Gabrielle are the faces behind Off the Cuff Entertainment, and he also plays in the Ashburton band Kopy Kats.

Seliger takes on the unsung in book Nearly 50 years have passed since police raided New York’s Stonewall Inn, touching off protests on Christopher Street that fuelled the LGBT movement.

To mark the moment, the popular bar and haven for homeless youth, sex workers, trans people and others in search of community and self was designated a national park in June by President Barack Obama.

It’s against that backdrop that longtime resident of the Greenwich Village neighbourhood, famed photographer Mark Seliger, decided on a new book, On Christopher Street: Transgender Stories, a collection of 70

portraits he took on the street over the last three summers, at a time the area has rapidly gentrified.

Since the 1980s, Seliger has made his living capturing celebrity in portraiture, from Kurt Cobain to Obama himself — the latter twice for the cover of Rolling Stone. This time, he wanted to focus on the unsung and highlight the “carnival,” as Seliger writes, of gender expression in an area he has called home since 1997.

He enlisted trans activist and writer Janet Mock to write the foreword. She, too, has had her brushes with Christopher Street,

after moving to the city as a graduate student. Her first encounter?

“It was to help a friend get a fake ID, and I got a new belly ring,” she laughed.

Like Seliger, she worries that rising real estate prices and wealthier residents will push out the transient and non-gender conforming populace that has gathered there for decades.

“We’re very much still here,” Mock said in a recent interview.

“It’s just that we can no longer afford to open up bars, we can no longer afford to have these spaces. There’s a gradual archiving of our history.”

Among Seliger’s subjects is a trans man who learned he was five and a half months pregnant, having gone off his hormones for top surgery. And there are two siblings who transitioned together, fretting over how their parents would take it. Others recall the Christopher Street piers, where Egyptt Labieja told Seliger it once was “just cars and people doing all kinds of ungodly things.

It was scary, but it was also exciting, because it was something new and I saw another part of life.”

Seliger’s book, from Rizzoli, is out in October.

Building a new local body team Sue Newman

T

he people have spoken and the Ashburton District has a new mayor and plenty of new district councillors.

That’s democracy in action, we might not agree with the winners and the losers on the day, but we need to have faith that our new local government team will continue to push our district to thrive and to remain one of New Zealand’s fastest growing and most forward thinking.

The team our new mayor Donna Favel will be leading is an unknown quantity. While she’s no newcomer to local body politics, having two terms as a councillor under her belt, her job will be made a whole lot tougher by having so many new chums around the table.

Half of the last batch of councillors have retired, some of those taking many terms of service and institutional knowledge with them. They’re leaving very big shoes to fill.

However, among the new chums there are some with promise written all over them and they, with the few returnees, will be our new mayor’s strength.

Starting with a halfway clean sheet, must in some way be a blessing for a new mayor.

She still has two of last term’s committee chairmen on board to give her support, but she has an opportunity to shape things her own way and sometimes that’s a whole lot easier than dealing with the past.

Apart from the obvious lack of experience around the council table, there is also the possible issue of factions and factional voting.

Several of the new councillors and at least two of the returnees have or have had associations with the Ashburton Citizens’ Association, a worthwhile organisation in its own right, but one that must stand aside from the council table.

In the last council terms, some new councillors were clearly voted into the job because of their association with the citizens’ group and their stance on some of its issues.

It’s good to have strong beliefs, but every councillor also needs to have a clear and open mind and come to council free from bias and baggage.

We need confidence they will vote according to their belief in what is right for our district, not because of their commitment to a specific group or cause.

f late, there has been some discussion about student loans and some changes have been proposed. It is helpful to consider some of the facts about student loans during discussion about changes.

Compared to many countries, New Zealand has one of the most generous student support systems in the world, and the Government is committed to interest-free student loans. Of course, the amount loaned to students comes at a borrowing cost to the taxpayer. In my view, a worthwhile one.

The Government writes off around 40 cents for every dollar lent through the Student Loan Scheme. On top of that, 70 per cent of the costs of tertiary education for all students are covered by the taxpayers. This means with the substantial Government subsidies to most tertiary courses, the tuition fees students pay are significantly discounted from what the true cost would be without Govern-

ment investment. For example, an engineering degree in total costs roughly $18,900 per year.

Approximately $12,500 of that is paid by the Government to the tertiary institution, leaving roughly $7300 to come from the student.

We also have targeted allowances for students who need them and we provide course-related costs. In 2012, we focused student allowances on the initial years of study.

When we first came into Government, National changed the rules to require students to pass 50 per cent of their fulltime courses over two years to be eligible for further student loan

support. As a result of changes made by this Government, repayments are increasing and fewer people who don’t achieve results from their studies are borrowing.

The Government spends 48 per cent of the budget for tertiary education on financial aid to students, while the OECD average at last count is just 22 per cent.

While $15 billion of student debt sounds huge, it is now growing at the slowest rate in a decade.

Students who remain in New Zealand after study on average pay off their student loans in less than six years after they complete their study. Figures released by Universities New Zealand show a typical university graduate will earn around $1.6 million more over their working life than a non-graduate. This is even higher for a medical doctor ($4 million), professional engineers ($3 million), and information technology graduates ($2 million).

There is no evidence that significant numbers of people who have declared bankruptcy have done so because of student loans at all. Most people who declare bankruptcy do so because they owe money to a range of creditors and, as a result, their student debt is also written off.

Inland Revenue doesn’t seek to bankrupt anyone solely because of their student debt. Students living overseas should contact Inland Revenue to come up with a repayment plan and those who are struggling can apply for hardship. Student loan repayments for people in New Zealand are subject to their income levels and primarily paid through the PAYE system.

The National-led Government remains focused on improving tertiary education, lifting achievement and getting better outcomes for students and taxpayers. We want to help students get the qualifications they need to succeed and play their part in growing our economy.

Actor ‘not quitting’

Sherlock writer Steven Moffat believes Benedict Cumberbatch is “very keen” to continue playing the famous detective, despite the actor hinting the next series could be the last. Cumberbatch recently claimed the fourth instalment of the hit BBC drama, which is expected to air early next year, felt “like the end of an era”.

Moffat said talks were still to be held with the BBC about making another series but he insisted Cumberbatch had not suggested the show was coming to an end. “If you just look at what (Benedict) actually says, he says nothing of the kind,” he said.

McCain bails on Trump Senior US Republican Senator John McCain has withdrawn his support for Donald Trump.

McCain, the 2008 Republican nominee, backed Trump but did not attend the Republican National Convention in July. His support for Trump became an issue in his re-election race against Republican Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Arizona).

“I have wanted to support the candidate our party nominated,” McCain said. “He was not my choice, but as a past nominee, I thought it important I respect the fact that Donald Trump won a majority of the delegates by the rules our party set. I thought I owed his supporters that deference.

“But Donald Trump’s behaviour this

week, concluding with the disclosure of his demeaning comments about women and his boasts about sexual assaults, make it impossible to continue to offer even conditional support for his candidacy.

Cindy, with her strong background in human rights and respect for women fully agrees with me in this.

“Cindy and I will not vote for Donald Trump. I have never voted for a Democratic presidential candidate and we will not vote for Hillary Clinton. We will write in the name of some good conservative Republican who is qualified to be President.”

McCain also cited other areas of disagreement in his statement, as well as Trump’s “character after his comments on

Prisoners of War, the Khan Gold Star family, Judge Curiel and earlier inappropriate comments about women. Just this week, he made outrageous statements about the innocent men in the Central Park Five case.”

McCain is the latest GOP lawmaker to withdraw support, a list that has been growing on Saturday.

In a July, 2015, appearance in Iowa, Trump criticised McCain by saying, “I like people who weren’t captured.” It was a reference to McCain’s time as a prisoner of war for 5½ years in North Vietnam. But McCain later said that he would support Trump, albeit he has tried to maintain a distance.

Two police officers shot dead in California Two US police officers have been shot and killed and a third wounded in Palm Springs, California.

The officers were shot yesterday after they responded to a domestic disturbance at a house in the city, Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes said at a news conference.

The officers were at the door of a house when the shooting began, he said.

“It was a simple family disturbance and he [the gunman] elected to open fire,” Reyes said.

He said the desert community about 170km east of Los Angeles had lost two brave officers.

Mass grave found in Mexican field The ranches of San Pedro were the preferred mass killing sites for criminal groups active in the area years ago, when Torreon municipality was listed as one of the most violent cities in the world.

According to official data, almost 2000 people from the area have been missing since that time, mostly as a result of violence between drug cartels.

World porridge champion An 87-year-old American man has been crowned World Porridge Making Champion at an event in the Scottish Highlands. Bob Moore, from Portland, Oregon, won the coveted Golden Spurtle for his efforts at the 23rd annual World Porridge Making Championships in Carrbridge, in Badenoch and Strathspey.

The title is awarded to the contestant who makes the best traditional porridge using just three ingredients – oatmeal, salt and water. Mr Moore, who used to run a wholegrain food business, said: “I couldn’t believe it when my name was announced. It is so meaningful to me to win the Golden Spurtle.”

Reyes said one of the slain police officers was Jose Gilbert Vega, a 35-year veteran who was due to retire in December and had chosen to work overtime on Saturday.

The other dead officer was Lesley Zerebny, mother of a four-month-old baby.

Police are searching for the gunman.

The remains of more than 600 corpses have been unearthed in a field in northern Mexico, says a group representing the relatives of missing persons.

Bones, teeth, pieces of clothing and shoes were discovered in the 16-hectare paddock in San Pedro, west of the Coahuila state capital of Saltillo, according to Grupo VIDA. The organisation’s president Silvia Ortiz said at the weekend the remains had been handed over to authorities to be identified.

The rapper resumed the Saint Pablo Tour in his hometown of Chicago without mentioning the crime at the show. The rapper abruptly cut short a New York concert earlier last week citing a “family emergency.” It was later reported that robbers held Kardashian West at gunpoint and locked her in the bathroom of a Paris residence before stealing more than $10 million worth of jewellery.

Playing it ice cool in Svalbard W

hen the floor beneath you appears to be made of glass, it’s advisable to tread carefully. And if every surface screams fragility, there’s even more reason to keep hands firmly in pockets.

But as I walk through a tunnel sparkling with Swarovski-worthy crystals, the temptation to touch is irresistible.

Kreeeanch. Within a split second, clusters of delicate icicles have shattered and, for a heartstopping moment, I wonder if our entire ice cave might collapse.

Several metres below ground, in a glacier almost at the top of the world, it’s unlikely anyone would hear our cries.

Fortunately, the walls of our “hotel” for the night are made of much sturdier stuff – 800-year-old ice that’s been prodded and pummelled by far greater forces than my inquisitive mitts.

Every winter, if conditions allow, caves are dug into Spitsbergen’s slow-moving, crevasse-free Longyearbreen glacier, accessing meltwater channels created during warmer months.

Last year’s high temperatures mean our 500m-plus tunnel is large enough to accommodate two or three abreast, and with head torches, we admire an art gallery of thin shards fanning like whale baleen and stalactites grander than organ pipes in a cathedral.

The 24-hour tour, which starts with a 3km snowshoe hike, followed by an overnight stay in an igloo, is one of the attractions bringing tourists to Arctic archipelago Svalbard, of which Spitsbergen is the largest island.

Approximately 135,000 tourists per year come to these mountainous, snow-carpeted lands – half on summer cruises in search of polar bears. Winter tourism, though, is growing.

“Twenty years from now, there will be more people and it will be less pristine,” warns Karl Schonning from Svalbard Wildlife Expeditions. Although he hopes strict regulations protecting the largely glacial landscape will slow down that process.

“As soon as you walk out the door, you break a rule,” he smirks.

That’s particularly true of Svalbard’s wilder residents.

At Green Dog – a family-run business offering tours on dogsleds – six unruly, mix-breed huskies quickly fall into line as they tug my sled through steepsided valleys, gleefully churning virgin snow. Born to run, they bark and yelp incessantly, only falling silent as I lift my foot from

Although slower than purebred Alaskans, these Greenland dogs have greater stamina and I sense it could take days to drain their batteries.

As a foggy sun is swallowed by the mountains, we retreat to a trapper’s hut, greeting a litter of boisterous young puppies on the way.

Sitting in a cabin dressed with weathered whale bones and musty muskox pelt is ex-RAF officer Ben Finney, who now manages the dog yard. He regales the hardships of not seeing sun for several months, while staring longingly through a window with a stuffed ptarmigan sitting pertly on its sill.

During those dark days, the aurora lifts spirits, with blazing light displays possible at any hour. In January and February, there’s even a chance to see the sky stained blood red, a phenomenon caused by the sun reflecting ice crystals in the atmosphere.

“In the past, it only happened once a decade,” explains Ben. “But we’ve already seen it four times this year.”

Not far from Green Dog, on the

outskirts of Spitsbergen’s main community Longyearbyen, Camp Barentz is an ideal spot to hunt aurora. Coaches provide safe passage through polar bear country, where carrying rifles is obligatory, and we arrive at traditional game cabins to dine on reindeer stew and wait for the lights to appear.

Heavy cloud scuppers our chances, so we head back into town, hunting bright lights of a different sort.

Once a post office, church and even hospital, Huset is now the former mining town’s main club, where several generations of a family can be found on the dance floor.

Further down the road, in Karlsberger pub, bottles of cognac and whisky cram a bar once frequented by miners, whose black and white portraits now adorn the walls.

A hangover from those times, alcohol restrictions still apply, and it took almost six years for Robert Johansen to change a 1928 law and start brewing his own beer. Now his Svalbard Bryggeri beverages, made with water from 2000-year-old Bogerbreen glacier, are for sale in bars and supermar-

kets.

Other ingredients are imported; sitting above the tree line, it’s impossible to grow crops in the permafrost. Bizarrely, though, Svalbard has more seeds than any other place on earth.

Locked away in a hilltop bunker, more than 860,000 crop varieties are preserved in the Global Seed Vault. Last year, a batch was taken to Beirut after bombing in Syria destroyed specimens from Aleppo’s own store.

Although under Norwegian sovereignty, Svalbard is owned by noone, making it the safest haven to protect some of the world’s most precious jewels.

Russia also has a presence here, and the northern-most consulate in the world can be found in Barentsburg.

We visit as part of a full-day snowmobile safari, slicing through snow-swept Arctic desert with the ease of a knife cutting butter. Soaring mountains and valley depressions give us two shots at catching a sunrise in the Advent Valley, where piercing rays claw at the cloud-streaked sky.

ing chimneys are a sombre world away from lively Longyearbyen.

All property is state-owned in this last vestige of the Soviet Union, where a bust of Lenin presides over the main thoroughfare.

Tourism here is also growing, Russian guide Arve tells me in splintered English, proudly pointing out a bar where the 78 degrees cocktail is named after both its latitude and alcohol content.

In total, 2600 people live in Svalbard, outnumbered by 4000 polar bears – although at this time of year, many of the apex predators are denning on the east coast. While it’s illegal to specifically go in search of them, if you happen to come across one, it’s a different story ...

Disappointingly for me – but perhaps not our guide – our journey home is bear-free.

My closest encounter is at Longyearbyen’s eccentric restaurant, Mary-Ann’s Polarrigg, where a stuffed ursus wearing boxing gloves rips through a wall and – weirder still – a polar bear penis bone is encased in the bar.

It’s certainly a spectacle, but, funnily enough, my hands stay firmly in my pockets.

Numbers up for big challenge Strong winds may have caused the cancellation of the kayak leg at this year’s Salmon Run, but the long duathlon offered a fine challenge for the Rakaia event’s multisport athletes to contest.

The 2016 Salmon Run’s entries were up on last year, with more than 250 signing up from Ashburton, Christchurch, Wellington, Alexandra, Hari Hari, Omihi, Balclutha, Blenheim and Australia.

Event co-ordinator Mandy Hurst said the day was enjoyed by all, despite the challenging conditions.

“Everyone was in really good spirits and it was still a very good

challenge for the multisport athletes,” she said.

“They had the wind against them going up and back and all the comments have been really positive.”

Wildcats need to find form, says coach Despite an inconsistent start to their season, reigning NBL champions, the Perth Wildcats, believe they can emulate the start of last season with a victory over New Zealand in Perth on Friday.

The Breakers return to the Perth Arena for the first time since losing the grand final decider there last season.

And if the Wildcats win, their 2-1 start will be the same as it

was at the start of the 2015-16 season.

Perth didn’t have the best start to their championship winning campaign, slumping to 6-4 in the first 10 weeks before they kicked into gear to finish the season in second place, with a 18-10 record.

They have not started their title defence in the best of form, losing to the Brisbane Bullets in

their first game and then scraping home in overtime against the Cairns Taipans, thanks to a gametying three-point shot from Jaron Johnson on the buzzer.

But coach Trevor Gleeson said he can see the improvement coming.

“I thought the first couple of weeks would be a test for us because I didn’t think we were that cohesive as a unit,” he said.

“But I seen some stuff in the last quarter that made me real happy.

“The guys were working hard defensively to get stops, they were pushing the ball, they were rebounding.

“That’s Wildcats basketball, so we’re getting there.

“We’re not there yet, but we are certainly working in the right direction.”

It’s not exactly how a rookie coach would typically draw it up - make last season’s leading scorer “pissed off” before the new campaign even tips off.

But for Paul Henare and the Breakers, potentially upsetting Corey Webster produced the right result in the NBL season-opener against Melbourne United.

The coach took all of one game to make the first big call of his tenure, dropping Webster to the bench in favour of returning favourite Kirk Penney.

The veteran’s inclusion was hardly controversial but the relegation of Webster came as a surprise, given his influence on the Breakers in the last two years.

But with Henare seeking a reaction from Webster, the move was one factor that added up to an encouraging victory as the spurned guard delivered eight-straight points in a pivotal fourth-quarter stretch that lifted his side past the team many have tipped for the title.

“I wanted him to be pissed off with not starting,” Henare said.

“But I wanted him to be pissed off in the right way and use it the right way, to come out and play.”

Webster initially struggled to make much of an impact but, as he has done time and again for the Breakers, the man once referred to as the microwave warmed up at the perfect time and finished with 11 points.

Penney, meanwhile, added nine after shooting three-of-12 from the floor and, considering the two shooting guards will both expect greater outputs as the season progresses, it’s a pair that promises to give the Breakers a serious offensive edge.

Providing, of course, they can both remain in the right mood.

Penney and Webster played almost identical minutes at Vector Arena and, having been denied an opportunity to experiment during an injury-hit pre-season, Henare insisted his starting plan was flexible.

“It’s one of those evolving things that will take time,” he said.

“My grand master plan for the pre-season games was to start different guys and see how different guys responded. So we’re not locked into it, but Corey showed a lot of maturity.”

It also aids Henare’s options that Penney can move up to small forward while Webster is comfortable running the point when new import Ben Woodside needs a rest.

The bizarre moment occurred during a break in play as several Wallabies were being attended to, and the medic appeared to be trying to intercept a ball being thrown in to Phipps by the ball boys. When the medic reached for the ball first, Phipps pushed the stunned support staff member who crashed to the ground sparking an all-in brawl.

Hammers move on up

Mid Canterbury’s aspirations of a third Meads Cup triumph in four seasons remain intact after seeing off Thames Valley 38-22 in week seven of the Heartland Championship at the Ashburton Showgrounds on Saturday.

The bonus point win propelled the Hammers into third place on the ladder, leapfrogging Buller who were dealt a 28-0 hiding by defending champions Wanganui in Westport.

Five points will have been cocoaches Craig Dunlea and James Jowsey’s main focus heading into Saturday’s clash, but a performance capable of matching perennial Heartland heavyweights South Canterbury and Wanganui will also have been on the minds of many of the Mid Canterbury faithful.

Despite some basic ball handling errors at times, the Hammers looked very good at others.

The home side threatened to punish Thames Valley at any time with the likes of first five Jarred Percival, wing Seta Koroitamana and fullback Timoci Nabekeke all in fine form.

Mid Canterbury drew first blood through Koroitamana in the 12th minute.

After plenty of pressure the Fijian wheeled away to cross over under the posts unchallenged and Percival was on hand to nudge the conversion.

Thames Valley opened their ac-

count eight minutes later with a penalty to bring the score to 8-2 under the new Heartland scoring system.

But the Hammers took the contest by the scuff of the neck soon after as young wing Christian Vainerere justified his place in the starting XV by touching down for the second try of the afternoon.

Mid Canterbury were at it again moments later as Koroitamana set off on a piercing run before finding lock Eric Duff who released number 8 Phil Watson just metres from the try line before being brought down by a last-gasp tackle in the corner.

Thames Valley began to gain momentum with 10 minutes of the first half remaining and were rewarded with their first try of the clash.

Following a steady buildup of pressure, wing Lance Easton broke through to cross over in the corner.

The angle proved too much for Beau Hamilton though, as the fullback’s conversion flew wide for a 16-8 halftime score.

Thames Valley came out firing at the start of the second forty as wing Samiuela Stanley brought the Swamp Foxes within two points with a length of the paddock try, but Hamilton failed to level proceedings from the boot.

Percival could only rattle the post from his conversion but Dampney’s try had put daylight between the sides at 22-14.

Things soon got worse for Thames Valley as second five Chance Bunce was given a yellow card.

Mid Canterbury quickly took advantage of having the extra man as Mike Lynch’s impressive try-scoring run continued and secured the bonus point in the process.

The Irish prop has now dotted down five times in seven appearances for the Hammers this season.

Percival found his range again and added the extras to boost the lead out to 30-14 with quarter of an hour to play.

Lynch came close again shortly after but dropped the ball just before the line.

It mattered little though, as replacement Kody Nordqvist added Mid Canterbury’s fifth try of the day before Percival slotted a simple conversion.

Thames Valley did cross over once more through skipper Hayden Wisnewski and Moss Doran was on target from the conversion, but it proved too little too late as the Hammers took a deserved 38-22 victory.

Mid Canterbury will face old enemy South Canterbury in Timaru in their final round robin clash next Saturday.

South Canterbury currently sit five points ahead of the Hammers on 32 points in second place while Wanganui lead the charge on 34 points and Buller round out the top four on 25.

The Marty McKenzie show was on full display in the capital yesterday as Taranaki firmed as Premiership semi-finalists with a dominant performance. The Taranaki first five, just the second best No 10 in the province, after a certain Beauden Barrett, carved up the Lions’ defence with his running and carved off big metres with his kicking. For his 17 points and authoritative generalship, he was rewarded with an early rest by coach Colin Cooper. No more social media All Black Aaron Smith has quit social media as he tries to repair the damage to his reputation and relationship. The halfback’s Twitter and Instagram accounts were disabled yesterday as the 27-yearold arrived back in Dunedin for talks with New Zealand Rugby and Teagan Voykovich – the woman he betrayed with his toilet tryst.

Smith, like many of his teammates, is prolific on social media. But he has been silent since being sent home from South Africa and yesterday his accounts were no longer open.

As Lima Sopoaga was lining up to slot a difficult touchline conversion late in the All Blacks win over South Africa in Durban, Kaino appeared behind him, apparently using ‘The Force’ to help guide the kick through the uprights. Sopoaga made no mistake, slotting the kick straight between the posts to cap off a record breaking 57-15 win for the All Blacks. It’s just a pity Kaino didn’t use his powers earlier to help Beauden Barrett.

By Patrick Mckendry The All Blacks are intent on celebrating their record-breaking victory over the Springboks yesterday morning in Durban but are aware that Australia will arrive in Auckland in a week’s time determined to spoil their party.

The 57-15 thrashing handed out to the Boks at Kings Park was the biggest margin of victory by the All Blacks over their old foe and South Africa’s biggest defeat at home.

All Blacks captain Kieran Read admits he couldn’t stop his players running wild in the final stages of their Rugby Championship clash.

Read gave credit to a tough South African side but ultimately found his team-mates love for the game is what pushed them to such a commanding victory.

“I’m so proud of the lads,” Read said.

“You come to South Africa and it’s always a very tough game.

“They came out wanting to play some footy and came at us really physically.

“The guys just wanted to express themselves near the end there and it was hard to pull them back.

“They were loving it.”

It equalled the world record for consecutive test victories at 17, but Steve Hansen’s men are determined to go at least one better and their head coach warned that

the Wallabies will be extremely eager to stop them.

Eden Park will host the Bledisloe Cup dead rubber on October 22.

“I wouldn’t get too far ahead of ourselves,” Hansen said.

“If we’re going to go one step further we’ve got to make sure we prepare really well. Australia are a good rugby side.

The handling, offloads and running lines were again first class from the All Blacks, who won all five of their Championship tests this year with bonus points.

But their defence was again excellent too. While the Boks didn’t help themselves on attack, with Steyn standing deep and wanting to kick more than run the ball, the line-speed from the visitors never let them settle.

“We’ve been working hard on our skills and our game for a long time; both in attack run by Fozzie [Ian Foster] and on defence run

by Smithy [Wayne Smith],” Hansen said. “Both of them in their own right are great coaches. Everybody is just doing their job.”

Two players who probably cemented their place in the side were midfielders Ryan Crotty and Anton Lienert-Brown.

The pair once again combined brilliantly after doing so for the first time against the Pumas, with 21-year-old Lienert-Brown a rising force for his power and ability to offload.

Foster said: “These two are really starting to gel well.

“I think they’re starting to grow in confidence with each other and I guess reading the different nuances of the defence and which lines to run. They’re certainly putting their hand up.”

Media outlets and specialist rugby sites around the globe lauded the All Blacks’ 57-15 triumph.

Here are some of the accolades: Sydney Morning Herald The two-time defending world champions completed the most dominant campaign of any team in the history of the SANZAAR competition, securing a bonus point in each of their six wins.

Captain Kieran Read’s brilliant team can own the record outright with victory over Australia in Auckland on October 22.

On current form, that almost seems a formality such was the dominance in their biggest-ever win in 93 Tests against their most famous foe.

South African Times Other than what looks to be a promising England side coached

by Eddie Jones, only Allister Coetzee’s men in the green and gold could have provided some sort of challenge in putting a stop to the Kiwis’ rampant run.

While many who walked through the King’s Park gate expressed their “funny feeling” of an upset in Durban in favour of the Boks, it was not to be.

Some would describe the All Black team as similar to a fine wine that gets better, if anything, Hansen’s side has often proven to be a well-oiled machine that gets the engine powering in the latter stages of the game.

IOL, South Africa It would’ve been painful to watch for Springbok supporters, but hopefully now coach Allister Coetzee will realise how far behind the All Blacks they are after being put to the sword by 57-15 in Durban on Saturday night.

The Boks were all bluster, but the inherent attacking mindset of the All Blacks was just too hot to handle.

While the Boks showed good abrasiveness and were certainly “up” for the game, they were never going to beat New Zealand with just a brute pack of forwards and Morné Steyn.

But that’s all that Allister Coetzee’s had in store, and they received a rugby lesson.

Independent UK South Africa’s scrambling defence that held off Australia last weekend was no match for the world champions who completed a clean sweep of six wins in this year’s southern hemisphere championship.

The result emphasised the All Blacks’ status as the best team in the world.

If New Zealand were missing some rhythm in the opening period, they found it in the second as they decamped in the opposition half, launching wave after wave.

They scored four tries in the final 10 minutes as South Africa were overwhelmed, having no answer to the rampant visitors.

In brief Merrick still upbeat Despite the Phoenix’s season-opening 1-0 loss to Melbourne City, coach Ernie Merrick still found plenty to be upbeat about ahead of next weekend’s clash to the Glory in Perth. With four players on All Whites duty, and another sidelined through injury, the Phoenix were always going to struggle against A-League highfliers Melbourne City. But although they created enough chances, Wellington couldn’t finish, despite Roy Krishna’s hard work up front as the lone striker.

Early sub defended Perth Glory coach Kenny Lowe insists it was the right decision to substitute star striker Adam Taggart and import Diego Castro despite watching his A-League team crash to a 3-3 draw with Central Coast.

Glory were cruising at 3-0 up at halftime following a brace from Taggart and a 35th-minute penalty to Castro. A bizarre own goal from Glory keeper Liam Reddy in the 84th minute ensured for a nervy finish, and the Mariners snatched a point when O’Donovan converted a penalty in the 86th.

Allenton makes top start

Open grade tennis returned to the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on Saturday, defying the day’s threat of showers.

The senior reserve matches were called off due to the wet weather but the senior open grade managed to complete round one.

Allenton quickly dusted off any cobwebs to produce a convincing 5-1 overall victory over Fairton.

The Allenton duo of Gala Cup champion Rhys Cromie and Bryn Looij were put to the test by Connor Brosnahan and Peter Leonard.

Cromie and Looij won the first

set 7-5 before losing out 7-6 (7-0) but won the tie break (10-6) to secure the spoils.

Allenton also took out the opposite doubles encounter.

Fairton’s Mary-Anne Martin and Christal Brosnahan went down 6-0 to Nic Thomassen and Maisie Looij in the first set before winning the second 6-4.

The Allenton pairing went on to take the tie break 10-5 to secure a 100 per cent record in the doubles.

The singles were almost a clean sweep for Allenton, too.

Cromie made light work of Brosnahan 6-2, 6-2 and Bryn Looij saw off Tyler Leonard 6-1, 6-2. Thomassen was also in fine

form in singles play to down Martin 6-3, 6-0.

Christal Brosnahan offered Fairton’s only resistance with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Maisie Looij.

Tinwald were forced to work harder for the win in their 7-6 overall victory over Methven.

The spoils were shared in the doubles with Tinwald’s Tessa McCann and Jason Feutz toppling Flynn Ness and Jarrad Hill 6-2, 6-2 while Isabelle Talbot and Sophie Innes hit back for Methven with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Dennis Taylor and Karen Scott.

The singles were all square with two wins each, but Tinwald were triumphant overall by a set.

Southern and Hampstead’s

clash was also a close one.

Southern ran out 7-6 winners overall but were pushed to the very end by a defiant Hampstead.

The doubles victories were shared with Neil McCann and Peter Kirwan showing plenty of class to beat Aidan Mitchell and Andre Van Rooyen 6-2, 6-1 for Southern, before Mary-Anne Thyne and Will Edgar evened the score for Hampstead by downing Matt Bubb and Mathieu Lucas 2-6, 6-2, (10-7).

The singles were level as McCann and Bubb secured wins for Southern and Lucas and Kirwan for Hampstead, but Southern did just enough for a single set victory overall.

All Whites impress in defeat to Mexico By michael Burgess The All Whites have gone down to the highly rated Mexican side, but not in the manner many would have expected.

New Zealand gave Mexico a real scare, drawing level soon after halftime before eventually losing 2-1 to the world No15 ranked team.

Marco Rojas equalised for the All Whites in the 46th minute, capping a well worked team move, after Mexico had taken the lead through a slightly fortuitous penalty midway through the first spell.

The visitors then enjoyed their best period of the match for the next 10 minutes, as their confidence surged following their goal.

But El Tri, who were playing in their 12th match of 2016, regained the initiative with a delightful goal through Bundesligabased Marco Fabian in the 56th minute. That settled the Central American side, and the capacity Nashville crowd, as both coaches made a slew of changes.

It was an encouraging performance from the All Whites, as the Oceania champions came

up with periods of impressive attacking play and used their high pressing game to good effect, especially in the first half.

The contrast between this match and other encounters with Mexico in recent years was stark; in previous games, especially in the ill-fated 2013 World Cup Intercontinental playoffs, New Zealand struggled to live with the pace and movement of the Mexicans.

They spent most of those matches in pure survival mode, camped deep in their own half, with every man behind the ball.

Granted, Mexico had not selected most of their European based players for this match, but their depth means any team playing under the red, green and white flag will be a strong side.

Mexico made a strong start to the match, creating several opportunities, but took the lead in the 27th minute.

The All Whites achieved parity for around 10 minutes in their best spell of the match, before a goal of exquisite class as swift passing opened up the New Zealand defence before Fabian applied a clinical finish.

‘Once-in-a-lifetime’ horse An association with thoroughbred racing and breeding that started over sixteen years ago hit its highest peak to date on Saturday afternoon when He’s Our Rokkii dashed to Group One glory in the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield.

On course to cheer home the four-year-old was New Zealand businessman Costa Feneridis, who along with friend and business associate John Collinson, bred and then raced the gelding in his first three New Zealand outings.

The pair, who have been in business together for over thirty years, accepted an offer by Australian agent Mark Pilkington after the Roc De Cambes gelding had finished an unlucky fourth in the 2015 Gr. 1 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes.

The deal saw them retain shares in the horse who was transferred to the Hayes & Dabernig stable in Victoria for his future racing.

Feneridis, who admitted he was making a slow start to his Sunday morning after a night of celebrations, recalled how he and Collinson started their involvement in racing with a bang that saw them thinking the game was a simple one.

“John and I have been in business together for more than thirty years and we both had a passion for racing so it was only natural we would get involved in ownership at some stage,” he said.

“The first horse we bought was Shinnecock who was trained by Bruce Marsh and won his first two starts including the Wellesley Stakes. We thought the racing game was pretty easy at that stage.”

Leading weight-for-age performer Kawi will head to Australia earlier than originally intended. Trainer Allan Sharrock has confirmed the Savabeel six-year-old’s travel and racing plans for his upcoming Perth venture. The Taranaki horseman had considered a run at Awapuni in an open handicap on October 29 before departing, but he has now opted for an extra start in Western Australia. He will travel to Perth where he will open his campaign in the Gr.2 Lee Steere Stakes over 1400 metres on November 5.

“As it turned out she got injured and never raced so we sent her to stud with her first foal being a filly we named Aluminium Bikerack who won seven races from Michael Pitman’s stable.

“She had a few issues after that with a foal dying and then another one going amiss when being broken in. John decided she should go to Roc De Cambes where we got Rokkii” Feneridis was convinced the horse was the real deal.

“One of those who contacted us was Mark Pilkington and after the horse ran fourth in the Sires Produce at Awapuni things started to get serious.

“The deal Mark was offering meant we could keep an interest in him where as the others all wanted to buy the horse outright.

“One of the main reasons we love racing is the people you meet along the way so to be involved with a great bunch who are now in the horse is just marvelous.

Diamonds crush the Silver Ferns

By Dana Johannsen The Silver Ferns have opened their Constellation Cup campaign with a crushing 12-goal loss to Australia in Sydney yesterday.

In an opening eerily reminiscent of last year’s World Cup final played at the same venue, the New Zealand side were blown off the court from the outset, finding themselves 9-1 down after five minutes.

But unlike last year’s World Cup showdown, in which the Ferns fought their way back to a narrow the deficit to just three by the final whistle, this time the Diamonds dominated from start to finish notching up their highest ever score against New Zealand in the 68-56 win.

Once again star shooter Caitlin Bassett set the platform for the win with a flawless performance in goal, notching up 47/47 in her three quarters on the court.

Had Lisa Alexander kept Bassett on for the full game, she would have undoubtedly beaten her record international tally of 53 goals, which she collected in her last outing against the Ferns in last month’s Quad Series decider.

Missing athletic midcourter Kayla Cullen, who has been ruled out of the rest of the international season with a foot injury, the Ferns were forced to make changes to their starting side from that which last took the court against Australia in last month’s Quad Series decider.

The changes saw Laura Langman pushed back into wing defence, with Shannon Francois getting the nod to start at centre – a combination that has had mixed results to date.

Without Langman directing proceedings from centre, the Ferns attack struggled early on as the connection between Francois and wing attack Grace Rasmussen looked frayed.

The suffocating Australian defence, led by the tenacious Sharni Layton, only worked to further confuse the Ferns attack with players hesitant to let the ball into the shooting circle.

Down the other end of the court the visitors looked just as hapless as Jane Watson and Katrina Grant could do little to stem the flow of ball into Bassett.

The 1.93m sharpshooter was paired with 1.92m basketball convert Gretel Tippett in the first half and the duo took advantage of the stark height difference over the Kiwis.

Watson and Grant could do little but watch the ball sail over their head as the Australian midcourt delivered passes with pinpoint accuracy into the shooting circle.

Trailing by 10 goals at halftime, Janine Southby had no option but to make changes, bringing on Anna Harrison at wing defence for her first international appearance since the 2014 Commonwealth Games final, while Ameliaranne Ekenasio was benched at goal attack in favour of Te Paea Selby-Rickit.

Harrison found herself in chase mode for the entire quarter, with the veteran unable to match the speed of Robinson.

With the Australian wing attack afforded greater freedom in the third spell, the Diamonds kicked the scoring up another level, outscoring the Ferns 22-16 for the quarter.

With the Diamonds threatening to post a 20-goal plus margin on New Zealand, the Ferns did well to claw it back to 12 over the final quarter.

The massive loss has put the Ferns under major pressure for the rest of the series.

To break their four-year Constellation Cup drought, the New Zealand side will probably need to win all three remaining tests.

The series now moves to Tasmania, where the two sides will meet on Wednesday night.

Sport ‘Everyone’s a druggie’ Former Collingwood star Dane Swan has admitted taking illegal drugs during his AFL career at the Magpies. “You show me someone who doesn’t know someone who has experimented or tried social drugs, and I will show you a liar,” Swan said.

“I have experimented with what some people call recreational drugs, but have never taken performanceenhancing drugs or what you might call ‘heavy’ drugs.” Swan, who won the Brownlow Medal in 2011, revealed that he never failed a drug test during his career.

Drama at Bathurst

BY DALE BUDGE Will Davison has edged Kiwi Shane Van Gisbergen to win the Bathurst 1000 by half a car length as the Red Bull Racing driver tried to find a way past in the last couple of laps.

A late three-car crash involving Jamie Whincup, Scott McLaughlin and Garth Tander and a handful of safety car interventions threw the race wide open as strategies were thrown out the window seemingly every couple of laps.

Van Gisbergen, who maintains his championship lead, was hurt badly by having to stack behind team-mate Jamie Whincup in the pits.

Davison, who replaced Van Gisbergen at the small budget Tekno Autosport team, claims his second Bathurst title alongside Jonathan Webb.

With a handful of laps remaining the race was thrown into chaos as Red Bull Holden driver Whincup dive-bombed New Zealander Scott McLaughlin at the end of Conrod Straight, firing the Volvo off the circuit.

Whincup slowed to allow McLaughlin to rejoin in front and avoid conceding a penalty but in doing so held up Garth Tander’s Holden.

As McLaughlin rejoined the circuit all three cars touched, sending the Kiwi and Tander into the wall and ending their races.

Whincup was handed a 15 second time penalty to end any hopes of him winning.

Mark Winterbottom got stuck in a sand trap, ending his race, which prompted a safety car just outside the fuel window to get home.

the first safety car to come out but it was deployed on lap 93 when Andrew Jones suffered a heavy crash at the top of the Mountain.

Whincup and co-driver Paul Dumbrell had in excess of a 30 second lead at the time.

Since then the safety car has made a number of appearances to keep changing the scenarios every few minutes.

New Zealanders Chris Pither and Richie Stanaway worked their way back up to the midpack after Pither was forced off the road by Rick Kelly early in the race.

The third car in the Triple Eight Racing stable of Craig Lowndes and Steven Richards suffered a freak gear shift problem that saw the Team Vortex Holden drop half a dozen laps and fall out of contention in the first quarter of the race.

The Ford of Chaz Mostert and Steve Owen had been as high as second but lost 30 seconds when the brake pressure didn’t come up after a pad change. The car hasn’t been able to use 100 per cent throttle either which has seen them fall right back.

The Freightliner Holden of Tim Slade and Ash Walsh fought their way up to second and were putting in some impressive laps when they had a drama with their brakes in pitlane and an oil fire saw them lose time and fall back down the order.

Lee Holdsworth’s Holden was forced out of the race with an engine issue on the opening lap while Kiwi Chris van der Drift’s Erebus Holden has also dropped back after mechanical problems.

Van Gisbergen leads the series by a narrow margin over Whincup.
