Rain, snow leaves Mid Canty chilly

Drivers might have been alarmed by floodwaters as they crossed the Rakaia River on State Highway 1 yesterday, but Mid Canterbury farmers were smiling about yesterday’s big rain.

The Rakaia River was bank-tobank and flowing at 4133 cumecs at the gorge early yesterday, which translated to waters lapping under the main highway road and rail bridges.

More than 50mm of rain fell on the Mid Canterbury Plains on Thursday night, about the average for all of November.

The accompanying cold front varied from the hills to the sea, with Federated Farmers’ members Chris Allen recording 58mm of rain at Ashburton Forks and Mike Salvesen 5cm of snow in the foothills.

In Ashburton, around 40mm of rain fell, with temperatures going as low as 2.5°C. Salvesen said farmers were happy not to be turning on irrigators but clearing skies last night had some worried about a frost this morning. Some just-flowering crops would be vulnerable to frost damage.

He said lambing was finished in the high country and stock should be alright.

“We can get frost or snow this time of the year because of the alps. It is part of life and part of the risk of farming.”

Rakaia man Bruce Kelly said the river would take a week or so to return to normal levels and for anglers to chance their arm again.

New channels would be formed.

He said the high waters were good for flushing unwanted didymo.

Nearly 790mm of rain has fallen so far this year on the Mid Canterbury Plains, according to an Ashburton weather station. Last November just 3.9mm fell for the whole month, contributing to an annual total for 2017 of 897.3mm; in 2016, total rain was 638.5mm.

The Rangitata River was also bank-to-bank at the highway after 350mm fell in the upper catchment of the river on Thursday night.

Crews are expected to re-evaluate damage over the next 24 to 48 hours when flowing water levels drop, to determine appropriate repair measures.

Travellers are encouraged to avoid this area and use the alternate route via Hinds Arundel Road, to Ealing Montalto Road, down to State Highway 1.

Social media users were quick to share rising river levels and MetService issued numerous severe weather warnings and watches for the South Island for gales, heavy rain and snow. Ivory Glacier on the West Coast received a staggering 652mm of rain, more than Christchurch receives in a year.

Snow flurries in Ashburton around 2pm also generated plenty of social media posts.

A few showers are forecast this morning, but sunshine returns over the South Island allowing temperatures to recover to the high teens.

Yesterday’s rain resulted in flows

in the Hinds River, usually dry, and the Ashburton District Council advised three sunshine bridges across the river are closed.

The Hinds was also above deck at the Maronan Road bridge, though water levels were dropping as the weather improved.

Ashburton District Council CEO Hamish Riach said Double Hill Run Road was also closed and snow was reported in various parts of the district, including Methven and Mt Somers.

“With surface water on many roads throughout the district, drivers should drive with extra care and caution,” he said.

The council has issued a precautionary boil water notice for the Mt Somers water supply after monitoring equipment at the Mt Somers treatment plan detected turbidity in the water supply after the heavy rain.

Residents connected to this scheme should boil their drinking water and water used in food preparation and for hygiene purposes for at least one minute before consuming until the notice is lifted.

A celebration of philanthropy

The Advance Ashburton Community Foundation marked its 15th year with a celebration of philanthropy at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this week.

The foundation has given $783,856 to community groups and individuals this year, from invested donations of $10.6 million.

Another $35m is promised in wills.

Executive officer Sandi Wood told an audience of around 400 that the foundation continued to grow, in both donations and grants.

Three new name funds had been set up for two individuals and a group that had donated more than $50,000. The largest grant was $470,000 to the Methven Care Trust for a new facility in Methven while other significant grants included 30 scholarship s worth $60,000 and ongoing support to the Boost child literacy programme run by the Ashburton Learning Centre.

More than 140 kids were benefiting from the programme with the number to grow next year.

Wood said among those to receive funding was medical student Izzy Ferguson, who was researching self harm and would be presenting her findings to Ashburton Hospital staff.

“The reason Advance Ashburton exists is to encourage projects that transform and help make the district a better place to live. But we can’t do this without donors.”

Wood said Advance Ashburton was also now funding Ashburtonbased assessments by the Seabrook McKenzie Centre for learning disorders.

Guest speaker Hayden Kuyf, of Rakaia, said he had to travel to Christchurch when he was assessed, then diagnosed, with dyslexia as a seven-year-old.

But he then learned life-long strategies to help him study, live and work “like normal”.

Now, at 24, he has a Bachelor of Commerce from Otago University.

Dyslexia made it harder for Kuyf to learn to read or interpreting words.

He said he hated school until he saw the new Seabrook McKenzie tools were making a difference to his reading comprehension. Later in exams, he was assigned readerwriters.

“Had I not started at Seabrook,

I would have been lucky to stay beyond Year 11. I stayed until Year 13, passing all three levels of NCEA and setting my goal of a university degree.”

He said having an assessment centre in Ashburton would be a great asset for the community, providing resources for people like him and helping them prepare their own strategies for cop-

ing.

“Dyslexia is not a stigma or a barrier to stop young people from being successful. Help is there, just ask. Don’t stop being successful.”

Other guest speakers were resilience expert Dr Lucy Hone and adventurer Hollie Woodhouse, who was awarded an Advance Ashburton Outward Bound

scholarship that ignited a dream to really step outside her physical comfort zone. In the past few years she has completed an ultramarathon in the Sahara Desert, the one-day Coast to Coast and an Amazon jungle trek in Peru.

Her latest adventure was a 560km trek across the Greenland ice cap as part of an inspiring explorers expedition.

On a mission to help our nation with resilience When her daughter and two friends were killed after a driver ignored a stop sign on Thompsons Track four years ago, Dr Lucy Hone made a deliberate decision to accept the good in her life.

The Christchurch family has forgiven the driver of the car, a Swiss tourist.

The Hones and another family had been heading to Lake Ohau to bike over the Queen’s Birthday break in 2014 and at the last minute 12-year-old Abi hopped into the car with her best friend Ella, and Ella’s mum Sally. All three died in the crash.

Hone turned to her academic

training and professional practice to foster resilience in very personal circumstances.

She made a decision to choose life.

Hone says she had all the tools at her fingertips to deal with the adversity – she took the findings of her resilience research at the University of Pennsylvania and applied them to bereavement.

She found that “ordinary magic” in things like being optimistic, helping others, faith, humour and being in a strong, supportive relationship helped.

Everyone has those tools, she said, but some we need to prac-

tice. Hone says the nation’s mental health is deteriorating and she is on a mission to help schools and organisations grow resilience.

“I believe we all have those moments in life where the road you think you are going down suddenly splits and you are forced to adapt to different circumstances. I am passionate about teaching our young people these skills so they are better equipped to deal with adversity.”

Hone says resilience can be learned and taught and everyone had the capacity to be resilient.

“But mental health is just like physical health. One visit to the

gym won’t cut it.”

She shared some simple strategies with the Advance Ashburton audience: ■ Choose where you focus your attention – don’t let the negative rule your life and notice what is good. Gratitude is strongly associated with resilience.

■ Ask if what you are doing is helping or harming you.

■ Understand that struggle and suffering are a normal part of life.

Head boy, girl announced

Ashburton College head girl for 2019 Mollie Gibson and head boy William Wallis are giving their end-of-year exams full focus at the moment, but there is excitement on the horizon.

Once the books are packed away for the year, they will think about how to juggle their student executive duties, study, afterschool jobs, sport, friends and family.

But they’re not fazed because they see themselves as part of a great school team.

Mollie came to AshColl from Allenton Primary and Ashburton Intermediate and is a national rowing champion, currently holding the under 17 girls’ singles scull title and a representing New Zealand at the youth rowing champs in the Czech Republic earlier this year.

Next year she will study English, statistics, accounting, economics and physics, and plans to go to university.

She said she was excited by the head girl opportunity and looking forward to setting some goals for the year with the new student executive group.

She is also looking for another successful year on the water.

Mollie said AshColl was a culturally diverse place with opportunities, like the annual ropes course, for younger students to get to know older student leaders. The course, which happens at Year 9 and involves Year 12 students as leaders, was one of

Rapist sentenced A serial sexual deviant who has preyed on women and children for three decades has been sentenced to preventive detention.

The 52-year-old Canterbury man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found guilty of raping a woman on a weekly basis over six months in 2012. He was earlier found guilty by a jury at the High Court in Christchurch on two representative charges of rape and one representative charge of unlawful sexual connection against the woman. She has been left traumatised, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and panic attacks.

“You took away my dignity. This will haunt me for the rest of my life,” said the woman, who has name suppression.

“I’ve never been one to shy away from an opportunity, this time was no different. Looking back over the past four years, I

think about how much AshColl has given me, from the pure educational side to all the extracurricular activities that have been offered to us. Remembering all this makes me realise how thankful I am for our school and now I wish for my turn to give something back.”

He is also involved in the Big Little Theatre Company, the Ashburton Scottish Society pipe band and plays hockey. He says his future after next year involves further study, travel and work.

“I’m just not sure what order to put them in.”

The deputy head girl is Harriet Stock and the deputy head boy Carl Cayanan.

Principal Ross Preece said the deputy roles had proven successful last year and were thus continuing.

Ten girls and 13 boys contested the head student roles for 2019 and Preece said it was a difficult choice because of the quality of the candidates.

The selection process was intense, with speeches to full school assemblies, interviews by teachers and voting by students and staff.

The person who died from a workplace accident near Masterton yesterday morning was a female staff member at a sawmill. The woman was a member of the team at Kiwi Lumber on Norman Ave, Waingawa. Emergency services were called to the address at 8.35am. WorkSafe NZ will be notified. Kiwi Lumber spokeswoman Liz Read said it was a “devastating day for the team” and for everyone in the business.

“The team are entirely focused on supporting the family and the people who were with her at the time of the accident,” she said.

“It’s just an extraordinarily tragic accident.”

Bananas running low One of New Zealand’s favourite fruits is running short. Changes in international shipping have led to stocks of bananas running low at New Zealand supermarkets.

“Banana supplies are short right now due to unforeseen shipping issues,” said Antoinette Laird, spokeswoman for Foodstuffs NZ, the group which includes New World, Pak’nSave and Four Square supermarkets. “... but the good news is we expect supply to be back to normal by the end of the month.” A spokeswoman for Countdown supermarkets cited delays in the arrival of shipments.

A blood pressure check could save your life

Every year around 9000 New Zealanders suffer a stroke, but most don’t even know they’re at risk from what is always a life changing event and is often a cause of death.

But there is one simple step every Kiwi can take to lessen their chance of having a stroke – getting their blood pressure checked, said Stroke Foundation of New Zealand chief executive Mark Vivian.

“The biggest risk factor for stroke is high blood pressure, regardless of age. Twenty per cent of New Zealanders have hypertension in the clinical range and a third of them don’t know it,” he said.

For Ashburtonians, having that check will be as simple as driving into the Countdown South carpark on Tuesday and stepping inside the foundation’s new blood pressure van.

High blood pressure is the number one cause of a stroke. It’s a silent killer and often there are usually no symptoms, Vivian said.

While free blood pressure checks have been run in October each year at Foodstuffs supermarkets using volunteers from service clubs, the foundation wanted to make free checks a year-round event and have put the blood pressure van on the road. In one year it will visit virtually every city and larger town in New Zealand.

“There’s this myth that if you have high blood pressure you’ll have headaches, that’s largely rubbish. It’s a silent killer, but if you don’t know there’s an issue, you’re obviously not going to do anything about it.”

Anyone with a high blood pressure reading taken in the van would be advised to contact their doctor for an additional check and if the reading was consistently high, then there were steps that could be taken to manage their

“There’s a lot that can be done to head off a stroke – regular exercise, reducing alcohol consumption, reducing salt in your diet. Getting your blood pressure taken is the 30 second check that could save your life.”

The foundation recommends a check once a year as a minimum.

A stroke can happen at any age and 25 per cent happen to people younger than 65, Vivian said.

“They’re no respecter of age but the older we get the more at risk we are. Our plumbing is wearing out and getting old and it’s been accumulating gunge for many years.”

Every stroke is different and different strokes affect different parts of the brain. The one thing all had in common, however, was the critical four-and-a-half hour

Stroke is the second highest cause of death in New Zealand and one-third of stroke survivors live with a significantly changed life for both themselves and their family.

The foundation’s work is about raising community awareness of how the role blood pressure and lifestyle issues contribute to stroke risk. As well it provides support to stroke victims and their families.

This work is funded 13 per cent from a government grant with the remainder of its funds coming from community donations and bequests.

A visit to the Stroke Foundation’s blood pressure van will take just a few minutes. Non-identifying details are provided to staff, blood pressure is taken, the results provided and if staff are concerned, the person will be advised to contact their doctor.

“People shouldn’t be sitting around deciding whether they should go to hospital they should get there as quickly as possible.”

The acronym FAST – is one side of your face dropping when you smile, can you hold both arms out in front of you, is your speech jumbled or slurred were key indicators of a stroke. If any one of those has happened to you, you should take action – fast, Vivian said.

Pain is not usually a symptom, but some people may experience a sense of numbness in a limb.

Mini strokes or transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs) are strokes where the signs last for no longer than 24 hours.

One cross, one life for country

If soldiers could stand in trenches knee-deep in mud in bitterly cold conditions, Ashburton’s RSA members decided they could brave heavy rain to put out the hundreds of white crosses that represent Ashburton men who were killed in World War One. The crosses first appeared as part of Anzac Day commemorations held to mark the start of the war in 1914 and they have appeared on each Anzac Day since.

On Sunday when the centenary of the war’s end is marked with an Armistice Day service, the crosses will make their fi-

nal appearance before being claimed by descendants of those soldiers.

When the crosses were first built descendants of those soldiers were offered an opportunity to ‘buy’ them. In return they were given a document that, from Sunday, they can exchange for their family cross.

Every year since the end of World War One, Armistice ceremonies have been held in many countries, always at the same time as the guns ceased firing on the Western Front – 11am on November 11th.

This year the service will begin with gunfire that will cease at

11am and that ceasefire will be followed by fire sirens and church bells ringing for two minutes at both St Stephen’s Church and the Church of the Holy Name.

The formal ceremony will follow with speeches by both RSA president Merv Brenton and Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel.

There will also be a display of vintage and army vehicles alongside Baring Square West and the Ashburton Museum will have facilities available for people who may want to research a World War One solider from their family.

RSA president Merv Brenton said it was a great effort by the

RSA’s compulsory military training (CMT) members to place the crosses in difficult weather conditions, but they’d told him a bit of wet weather was nothing compared to the conditions of trench warfare, he said.

Ashburton’s ceremony will be part of the RSA’s Roaring Chorus where organisations and communities are being encouraged to gather whatever ‘instruments’ they had to create a roaring chorus of celebratory similar to the songs and cheers, miscellaneous pipings, blastings, tootings and rattlings that was said to have occurred as the end of the war was celebrated in 1918.

An additional length of the walking and cycle track around Lake Hood will soon be sealed, with the help of a grant from the Ashburton District Council.

The Huntingdon Park property owners’ association asked the council for $7681 to help fund the work but the council has just $3800 left in its discretionary grant fund budget.

It agreed at a policy and bylaw meeting this week that this money should be given to the association.

The area to be sealed runs from the water ski area to the beach at the top end of the lake.

The walkway will not be extended further because the overall plan for the lake development will see significant change in the layout of the land adjacent to the rowing club.

This is the association’s second attempt at gaining funds from the council for this work.

It applied for $20,181 in February but the application was declined because the association had not requested permission from the land owner, the council, to undertake the work.

This time round, permission has been sought first and the project’s costs will partially be covered by a grant of $12,500 from the Lion Foundation along with the council’s grant.

All up the project will cost $41,000, with $21,000 of funding confirmed from other sources.

$78,500 raised for hospital helipad

Mid Canterbury people are still contributing to a fundraising feast that has now raised $78,500 for a roof-top helipad at Christchurch Hospital.

Minutes are crucial in the health care world, especially when emergency patients in Ashburton have already spent 20 minutes waiting for the helicopter and another 20 in the air on their way to Christchurch.

Patients flown by rescue helicopter from Mid Canterbury currently land at Hagley Park and endure another 13 minutes in an ambulance transfer to nearby Christchurch Hospital.

But a roof-top helipad is included in a new hospital building set to open next September and thanks to the Maia Health Foundation and its Ashburton arm Club 98, the helipad will be bigger and better than the Canterbury District Health Board had money for.

Maia is raising $2 million for the helipad, which means it will be 30 per cent bigger and will have a four-bed clinical support unit alongside. Patients can begin receiving care seconds after disembarking the helicopter.

Maia board member and former Ashburton Hospital director of nursing Mary Ross said having access to health care immediately post-flight was crucial, considering the helicopter would have spent 40 minutes in the air on a routine return flight from Christchurch to Ashburton and back.

In the golden hour following a medical event, minutes could make a difference, especially for young people.

Patients flying out will also be able to wait in the helipad unit, instead of having to be brought up from other floors.

Club 98 spokesperson Angela Leadley said her committee was delighted people were continuing to donate.

“We always backed Mid Canterbury to support this but I can’t believe how many generous people we have in this amazing community.”

The Spring Indulgence included a four-course meal of local produce by chef Chantelle Quinn and auctions on the night for packages including an overnight helicopter adventure at Gawler Downs Station.

Entertainment included items provided by an Ashburton College choir.

Not even cancer could Neil from gruelling

Neil Wylie was in the middle of preparing for a trip to Australia to compete in a big mountain biking event, when a simple trip to the dentist to get some fillings fixed changed everything.

But Wylie was determined to make it to Australia and he did.

ust three months after being diagnosed with cancer, Neil Wylie ticked off one of the most gruelling challenges of his long cycling career.

And after crossing the line on the fourth and final day of the Cape to Cape mountain bike race in Western Australia recently, Wylie was presented with the Johnny Waddell Beacon Award for overcoming adversity, or being “the shining light” of the event. It was recognition of the tough road he’d travelled to get to that position – a road which began with a simple trip to the dentist.

Wylie said he’d seen the Cape to Cape on television and decided he’d like to have a go at it, so he signed up, before booking himself in for a visit to the dentist.

“I’d saved up a bit of money and thought I would get some fillings redone and tidied up, and I said ‘I’ve got an ulcer that I can’t get rid of’,” Wylie said.

The dentist wasn’t sure what it was so put him on antibiotics, but it wouldn’t clear up, so he was sent

to Christchurch to have a biopsy done. That biopsy revealed that the ulcer was in fact cancer, an oral cancer on the top of his gum.

Wylie said when you heard the word cancer, you naturally thought the worst. He underwent surgery in July to have the cancer removed and while the plan was initially to remove two teeth, he ended up having seven teeth and part of the bone taken out.

Wylie was worried what he’d be left looking like afterwards, but a plate was made to fit him and, while it took some getting used to, looking at him now you wouldn’t even know what he’d been through. He didn’t require chemotherapy or radiation and now just has to have check-ups every six weeks for a year to ensure he is still clear.

The whole experience completely changed his outlook on life. Wylie knows he is lucky to be alive and is determined to make the most of the chance he’s been

given. Included in that, was going ahead with the trip to Western Australia to compete in what has been described as Australia’s longest and most gruelling mountain bike race – a trip he’d been looking forward to.

“I thought, I’m going to do this, even if it kills me,” Wylie said.

“Even if I had to walk it, I was going to do it.”

Having to take it easy after his operation meant missing a good month of training, so he headed into the event off a couple of road races with the Tinwald Cycling Club and some spin classes.

Games, by his side, Wylie lined up at the start of the Cape to Cape along with 1400 other competitors ready for whatever lay ahead. He was just happy to be there.

The race was held over four days, with the first stage being 47km, the second 63km, the third 45km and the fourth 57km. Each day involved anywhere between two and three-and-a-half hours on the bike tackling some tough terrain.

The first two days of the race, which was based around Margaret River, were hard. But by the end of day four Wylie and Hall were ready to rebook the house they’d rented for the event’s duration, and to head back for another go next year.

Wylie was sixth overall in the Masters 3 category, and more importantly, he beat Hall. For years, there has been a friendly rivalry between the two and this time the bragging rights went to the Kiwi.

Wylie is no stranger to competitive cycling. He’s cycled for as long as he can remember, but most of it has been done on the road or the track, picking up numerous New Zealand titles over the years.

Mountain biking is a different kettle of fish though. It required a lot more strength as there were countless hills and downhill sections to tackle, and while medical officials were kept busy during the Cape to Cape event dealing with injuries sustained from falls, Wylie came through unscathed with a massive smile on his face.

“When I went across the line I was like, ‘yes, I have done it’, that was the biggest thrill. And I beat Murray, so that made it even better,” Wylie said.

He credited his early diagnosis and the fact he was fit and healthy for the fact he’d come through his

cancer ordeal so well, and said he’d been fortunate that family, friends and workmates had rallied around him.

In hindsight, there were signs that something wasn’t right.

Wylie said he’d been tired, but the groundsman at Anzco just put it down to how busy he’d been.

Looking back, unusual behaviour by his beloved seven-year-old rottweiler Holly was also a sign that something was up, Wylie said.

“Before I found out it was cancer she would come and sit by me, right in front of me, and just stare at me, and I still – to this day – reckon she knew that I was crook,” Wylie said.

“I reckon she picked it up, that she knew I had cancer, because she’s never done that before. She would just sit there and stare at me in a daze.”

Since the operation to remove the cancer, Holly had stopped doing it.

Life has returned to normal in the household and today it is hard to wipe the smile off Wylie’s face.

Twelve killed in rampage Ian David Long began his adult life by enlisting in the Marines and getting married. Years after a divorce and a discharge and months after shouting brought a mental health expert to his door, Long killed 12 people at a country music bar outside Los Angeles.

Long, 28, was a former military machine gunner who apparently killed himself after the attack in Thousand Oaks, the quiet suburb where he lived with his mother.

Neighbours said yesterday they would hear loud, aggressive fights between the two.

Authorities said they visited that ranch-style house only once, in April, after a neighbour reported yelling and crashing sounds.

Deputies found Long “was somewhat irate, acting a little irrationally” and called in a mental health specialist, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said. That specialist assessed Long but concluded he couldn’t be involuntarily committed for psychiatric observation.

“The mental health experts out there cleared him that day,” Dean told reporters yesterday, though they were concerned he might be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder because of his military service.

“Obviously he had something going on in his head that would cause him to do something like this,” Dean said.

A next-door neighbour said he called authorities about six months ago when he heard loud banging and shouting at Long’s home.

“I was concerned because I knew he had been in the military,” neighbour Tom Hanson said yesterday, as federal and local law enforcement officers

Potter star unrecognisable He became an international movie star thanks to the Harry Potter films, but Tom Felton doesn’t look like Draco Malfoy anymore. The 31-year-old appeared on UK show Good Morning Britain looking worlds away from his child star past.

Wearing his darker hair in a man bun and sporting glasses, Felton admitted the “Harry Potter flame is not going anywhere anytime soon”. “Obviously, yeah, it has changed my life beyond recognition,” he said. “But at the same time, I don’t really see myself as a Harry Potter star. Hanson described Long as an introvert and said he was “dumbfounded” by the massacre.

Long’s only other contact with authorities came after a traffic collision and after he alleged he was the victim of a violent encounter in 2015 at another bar in Thousand Oaks, the sheriff said.

Long enlisted in the Marines at 18 and was married as a 19-year-old in Honolulu in June 2009, according to military and court records.

His military service lasted nearly five years, and he was honourably discharged with the rank of corporal in 2013, the Pentagon said. He was

part of the infantry, responsible for hauling and shooting machine guns.

During his service, Long’s marriage fell apart. He and his wife separated in June 2011, while he was deployed on a seven-month tour in Afghanistan.

The couple cited irreconcilable differences in divorce papers filed in May 2013, two months after Long left the Marines.

Later, he enrolled at nearby California State University, Northridge, last attending in 2016, the school said in a statement.

More recently he was living in a home where neighbours said they could hear frequent, aggressive shouting between Long and his mother, espe-

cially over the last year.

About 18 months ago, Don and Effie MacLeod heard “an awful argument” and what he believes was a gunshot from the Longs’ property. Don MacLeod said he did not call police but avoided speaking with Ian Long.

“I told my wife, ‘Just be polite to him. If he talks, just acknowledge him, don’t go into conversation with him’,” Don MacLeod said.

Authorities haven’t identified what motivated Long to open fire during college night at Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks.

The dead included 11 people inside the bar and a veteran sheriff’s sergeant who was the first officer through the door.

Breaking Bad: The movie Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan is working on a two-hour film based on the wildly-popular AMC series. It was not immediately clear if the film would land on TV or in theatres, according to DailyMail. Work is slated to begin in a few weeks in Albuquerque, New Mexico on a film tentatively titled Greenbrier, the New Mexico Film Office confirmed to the Albuquerque Journal, and run through February. Stranded family died on remote track Stranded after their car broke down on a remote dusty bush track 300km northwest of Alice Springs, two teenagers, their three-year-old son and a 12-year-old boy only needed someone to drive past and lend a hand.

Tragically, that help never arrived.

With no mobile phone service, they left their car and began walking towards a remote community 18km from where their vehicle was found.

Now, all four are dead.

In what is one of the Territory’s worst Outback tragedies, the quartet left Willowra on Friday destined for the community of Jarra Jarra.

The trip is roughly 114km, or a five-hour drive on the Jarra Jarra Access Road.

The couple’s car broke down roughly halfway through their journey.

Weather records show temperatures in the area reached 39.9°C on Friday, 41.3°C on Saturday and 40.3°C on Sunday.

On Wednesday, a passer-by came across the bodies of the 19-year-old couple and their son.

It would turn out they would be discovered 4.5km from their abandoned car, where remnants of food and water were found.

The “distraught” passer-by rushed to the Willowra health clinic to raise the alarm.

On Wednesday night, family members informed police that a 12-year-old boy from the same community had also

been travelling with the young family, sparking a desperate aerial and ground search for the missing passenger.

Tragically, less than 24 hours later, NT Police confirmed the boy’s body had been found only 120m from the perished family.

Police are yet to rule out the possibility that the car was carrying yet more unaccounted for passengers.

“Although police have no information that suggests there were other passengers in the car, we will continue a precautionary land and air search until we are satisfied that all areas of interest have been sufficiently canvassed,” Southern Desert Division Superintendent Jody Nobbs said.

Supt Nobbs said the man who initially raised the alarm at Willowra Health Clinic would be a critical part of the police investigation.

He said the tragic incident was a sad reminder to take precautions when travelling on remote Northern Territory roads.

“This does serve, unfortunately, as a timely reminder for anyone travelling on NT roads to ensure that when you travel your vehicle is in a fit state, that you have sufficient supplies including water and a first-aid kit, and that someone is aware of what your travel itinerary is – when you intend to leave, arrive and your anticipated routes,” he said.

Minute steaks 3 x thick Quality Mark eye fillet steaks each cut into three 1cm thick ‘minute’ steaks 4-8 field mushrooms – depending on their size, allow 1-2 per person 1/4 C olive oil 2 big cloves garlic Salt and pepper Balsamic glaze 1/2 C balsamic vinegar 1 firmly packed T brown sugar ■ Minute steaks: Crush the garlic cloves and stir them into the oil.

Brush the steaks and the mushrooms with the garlicky oil. Then season the steaks lightly with a little salt and pepper.

■ Place the mushrooms under the grill and cook until tender. While the mushrooms are cooking, heat a frying pan or grill plate until smoking hot.

■ Add the steaks and reduce the heat to medium. Cook them for 2 minutes, turning once halfway through the cooking time.

■ Great as a sandwich, or with creamy mash, or risotto and salad. Top with the cooked mushrooms and drizzle

with balsamic glaze.

■ Balsamic glaze: Combine the vinegar and brown sugar in a small saucepan and simmer gently for around 5 minutes until slightly thickened. The glaze will become more syrupy as it cools.

■ Balsamic glaze can be stored in the fridge for several weeks.

i-SITE decision long overdue

H

ow many people does it take to change an i-SITE? Not many you’d imagine but it does seem to take a bit of time.

That’s been the key learning from the past few weeks as the saga, that is the Ashburton i-SITE building, continues.

Earlier this week, for a fleeting moment, there was a whole lot of hope. Whispers in the corridor suggested an announcement was forthcoming. And thus batedbreath was waited on.

The anticipation turned to frustration when all that was announced was that the discussions, which began on October 18 at the Finance and Business Support Committee meeting, were – wait for it – ongoing.

Yes, that’s right. Sold on the pretence of progress, we’re actually being spoon-fed some delay tactics – and the most confusing part of the entire thing is why?

We have a group of keen individuals who are keen to work within the site to bring back many of the key functions of the former identity that was the i-SITE. They’ve expressed their desire to set the wheels in motion, but the Ashburton District Council

brake is, for some reason, firmly stuck.

What is it that is such a major stumbling block that there’s noone signing on the bottom line?

An information site might not seem like the biggest of deals on face value, but this community have shown they’re not happy about it being taken away from the centre of their town.

But those charged with the decision to remove it, have been given somewhat of a saving grace by a group who can see the major benefits of the site to the township and are keen to deliver it to the district and its visitors – yet they seem intent on dragging the process out a lot longer than it should take.

The bottom line is that there is

a group, willing to spend money by occupying the space – money which can effectively be put to good use in other areas – perhaps in the tourism sector, which would seem to make a whole lot of sense.

But we require more information before we can let them in the door. Why? Perhaps, and just perhaps – the stumbling block is actually a little closer to home. A report was undertaken which suggested that the i-SITE would be better off being closed from a financial point of view.

Money talks of course and it was the major reasoning behind the decision – but how would one feel if that decision was then in some way reversed and an

independent party came in and started making money off the project.

Perhaps a fear of gaining an understanding that the wrong decision was made in the first place is what’s holding everything back.

And you could bet your bottom dollar that any new venture of a similar nature would almost automatically become a success, because after all, before the decision to close the Ashburton i-SITE it was one of the better performing venues in the country so there’s no reason to see why that couldn’t return.

Hopefully an outcome isn’t too much longer in coming.

This saga has gone on long enough now without any more delays.

Trump has wings clipped A

fter all his bluster, personal abuse of the Democrats and sustained demagoguery, thankfully, Trump has had his wings clipped. And not before time.

Perhaps, now, the USA will re-gather its self-shattered, selfconfidence and rejoin its allies as a dependable, diplomatic contributor to world affairs, and the bullying tones of maverick Trump will become less prominent.

There is still a good deal of wishful thinking in that statement as Trump is oblivious to the norms of public life.

He is a rabble-rouser first and a diplomat hardly ever. Subtlety is not the name of his game. He may now feel that to get past the Democratic majority facing him in Congress the best way will be to increase the volume of his invective and throw in more lies about just about everything he has ever done, or claims to have.

As the redoubtable Democrat, Bernie Sanders, said in his acceptance speech in Vermont – and with obvious derision – Trump is a “pathological liar”, who is dividing the nation when, as its President, he should be bringing it together.

Bernie became famous – notorious, even, – for being the thorn in the side of Hillary Clinton, when both were looking for the Democratic presidential nomination. In my book it would be much more worthwhile were he to fulfil the same role on Trump when, inevitably, he goes for reelection in two years’ time.

sions about the charlatan now occupying the White House and would not hold back when it came to Trump’s inevitably insulting response.

Otherwise, it’s hard to see who else there is in the “new” Democratic Party who would have the intestinal fortitude to withstand Trump’s insults.

So that’s the USA for the moment; it would have been better still had the Democrats scored a double whammy in both House and Senate. but the lower House is much better than nothing.

Back here – and in the mode of an article I wrote recently about the bare-faced advantages some MPs take of their “elevated” positions – we have Messrs Brownlee and Mallard helping themselves to $24,000 from the Exchequer to finance a “jolly” to Tokyo, to watch the All Blacks playing Japan.

That we are expected to accept they really were on “government business” of some sort is merely an insult to the intelligence of the nation. That they flew first class, simply rubs more salt into the wound.

Do they have no conscience when it comes to such exploitation of their parliamentary roles.

Subtlety is not the name of Donald Trump’s game. him Speaker was quite a clever move by Jacinda, to keep him from causing endless trouble in the House.

However, when it came to the prospect of a free jaunt to a rugby match he would not have been able to help himself.

Brownlee should simply have known better.

Their behaviour fits exactly with what I was saying in the earlier piece. Respect for MPs is never far off the bottom rung; selfish incidents like this will have it well below.

Finally, has come to light yet another “secret recording”, involving Simon Bridges and Paula Bennett plotting to get their irritating colleague Jami-Lee Ross off the scene and into a mentalrecovery facility, until the furore of his criticism of Bridges dies down. What is it with these “se-

cret recordings”?

Is it now the custom of MPs, and people in high places generally to record every word they utter and receive to ensure they have the verbatim account of what was said and decided, thus putting themselves in a position to provide word-for-word evidence in the event of any subsequent litigation.

Should we all be extra careful what we say? After all, we know the hills are alive with the sound of clicking hackers. Take good note – and care.

compassion when we see others suffer in life. No one should suffer alone because we are community. As human beings and members of any community, we must never loose compassion for others which is an important virtue in life.

In Matthew 9:35–36 we hear that, “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.

When he saw the crowds,

he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd”.

When Jesus saw the need of others, he was moved with compassion and continued to share with them the message of hope and healed them.

In doing so, he proclaimed the Kingdom of God. The proclamation of the Kingdom of God is not just in words as we can see from Jesus’ life. Jesus saw people’s needs and worked with them, meeting their need.

Some of the needs that people have may not be physical needs but emotional or spiritual and all they may need is to have someone to talk to.

Let us be compassionate orld events can be overwhelming and challenging to respond to. Sometimes things seem to be badly broken in our world, as we witness the sheer volume of human suffering.

We see so much suffering on the news and people’s pain and life’s challenges can be numbing, not knowing how to respond.

Some people have suggested that what is happening around us can lead to “compassion fatigue as a result of living in a badly broken world”. When we look around, we see our loved ones in pain and others giving up on life and we do not know how to respond.

Lines companies told to hurry up

By Gavin Evans Electricity lines companies have been told to accelerate changes to their pricing and not wait until the next regulatory period starting in 2020.

The Electricity Authority, frustrated by the lack of action by some networks, has written to the directors of all distribution companies telling them the need for change is urgent and cannot be delayed.

Without change, the charging structures of many lines companies risk increasing peak period demand to the cost of all consumers, while potentially also raising charges to households without solar panels.

“The authority needs to see the distribution networks act with ambition and urgency on reforming their price structures. They should put in place concrete transition plans now, rather than wait,” it says in a six-page paper.

decade-old demand-based charges due to on-going opposition from some customers who didn’t understand or trust it. The company has since opted for time-of-use charges instead.

Last month the ENA said the changes planned are the biggest in 100 years and many of its members wouldn’t start the work until 2020. Among the issues yet to be resolved was the rural-urban cross-subsidy that exists on most networks.

“Changes must be supported by consumers and other important stakeholders, such as electricity retailers. That’s why discussions on pricing reform need to focus on the end-consumer and encourage consumers’ active participation around new pricing options,” the ENA said in its submission to the

turn putting more of that cost on families without solar. Networks are already working to change the way they charge and the Electricity Networks Association (ENA) has been leading a technical programme on the options available.

At least eight lines companies – supplying more than 40 per cent of the country – already offer timeof-use charges for households.

Three others also charge based on network peak demand.

But there are real concerns among networks, most of which are community-owned, as to how shifting to demand-based or timeof-use pricing could impact consumers without the means, or understanding, to adapt their usage.

Avoiding complexity is another driver. The Lines Company, based in Te Kuiti, last year scrapped its

Government’s review of electricity pricing.

“Pricing reform must not be dictated by economic theories, as the impacts on people are more important.”

The authority says it has been heartened by the ENA’s work, but disappointed by the plans of some networks which have “lacked rigour and commitment to timeframes”.

“Given the cost pressures faced by consumers and the looming commercial implications for electricity distribution businesses of inefficient investments, the need for price reform is more urgent than ever.”

It plans a consultation shortly on changes it may make to its principles for distribution pricing. But, in the meantime, it has promoted three options, none of which it considers complex and all of which would be an improvement on current models. Each would comprise a fixed charge.

Options would then include a seasonal time-of-use charge, a static demand charge, or a dynamic demand charge.

By annE GiBson A Maori land protest, which went all the way to the United Nations, has failed in a New Zealand court, allowing this country’s largest developer to go ahead with a 480unit Auckland housing estate at Ihumatao.

The Environment Court rejected the appeal from Maori land protester Pania Newton and others, fighting against development of a site neighbouring land said to be New Zealand’s equivalent of England’s Stonehenge for its archaeological importance.

Fletcher Residential can now begin developing 33.4ha beside the historic Otuataua Stonefields at Mangere near the airport and its chief Steven Evans yesterday vowed to begin work next year.

Newton of Save Our Unique Landscape and others challenged Heritage New Zealand for allowing Fletcher to go ahead and she last year claimed a UN victory, although Fletcher disputes that.

“The UN recommended the Government re-evaluate the special housing area at Ihumatao because they recognise that Maori were not adequately consulted during its designation and that Maori did not give their free prior and informed consent,” Newton said last September after putting her case to the UN. But the Environment Court has just issued its decision which rejected her appeal, saying it was satisfied with Heritage NZ’s decision to grant authority to allow work to go ahead.

“The archaeological sites which are known to be affected do not present such historical and cultural heritage value as to prevent or further restrict the reasonable future use of the site,” said the de-

The court acknowledged the relationships of Maori with the land but said those relationships had been considered.

Newton, kuia Betty King who has undisputed whakapapa to Makaurau Marae, Nga Kaitiaki o Ihumatao Charitable Trust and SOUL Ihumatao took the case against Heritage NZ which said it granted authority for a site which excluded areas of archaeological importance.

Building work was also subject to conditions, it said, so that if archaeological discoveries are made, correct procedure is followed.

Archaeologist Dave Veart submitted that authority from Heritage NZ was issued contrary to its policies and best archaeological practice, the court said.

He criticised a lack of assessment of the total remaining archaeological resource available and the importance of the affected area.

He fears obliteration of the ar-

chaeological values of the site. But Heritage NZ said it granted authority for work which “excludes areas of archaeological sites including burial caves, the remains of the 19th century Wallace homestead and part of remaining dry stone wall features”.

Evans said yesterday there were three “myths about the work: one that we didn’t consult iwi and we did; two that we are building on the stonefields and we are not because we are building beside them; and three that the UN had a problem with what we are doing, but the UN doesn’t have a problem with Fletcher and what we are doing”.

The court noted all earthworks were to be monitored by an archaeologist approved by Heritage NZ. Any archaeological evidence encountered was to be investigated, recorded and analysed. Before earthworks start, an archaeological investigation must be made of the listed sites. A public interpretation panel must be erected.

The running man

More than 40 years ago, Joe Ford discovered a love and a talent for running. He still loves running, and recently was recognised by NZ Athletics for his work in the field of athletics.

But the road Ford has travelled for the past 40 years hasn’t always been smooth. This is his story.

If you’ve ever driven down Walnut Avenue after work, past the Ashburton Domain, chances are high you would have passed Joe Ford out for a run.

Over the years he estimated he has run more than 8000 laps around the domain.

His love for running began 40 years ago, and it was a love that continued today, and one that was recently recognised by New Zealand Athletics, with the presentation of a long service award and pin to recognise his years of commitment and dedication to the sport.

That involvement in athletics began back in 1975, back in the days when large numbers of the then Ashburton Harriers Club would run around the domain every night.

Ford was still at school in 1975, and came third in the 800m heats for Red House on sports day, finishing in 2.38 minutes.

He decided to jog a lap around the domain every night until the athletics finals two weeks later, and came dead last in 2.21 minutes. But it was a big enough improvement that Ford felt he could make something of his talent.

A year of jogging later, Ashburton College hosted a weekend training school for up and coming athletes with coaches from all over New Zealand.

Ford was in the middle distance running group and the weekend coach was former Commonwealth Games coach Bruce Milne.

“He was a very imposing chap with a booming loud voice.

“We waited in a classroom for him to appear. The door opened and he just stared at us and in a very loud voice said ‘hands up all those who have run for two hours or more’.”

No hand went up.

Just one trembling hand went up when he asked if anyone had run for an hour or more.

By the time the coaching clinic finished on the Sunday afternoon, all of the boys and girls in the class had run for over an hour. By the age of 16 they were all doing two hours easily.

That weekend class decided his life as a runner, Ford said.

“The weekend was spent learning all the programmes of the world’s great athletes as well as our own Dick Tayler (1974 Commonwealth games gold medallist), how the programmes were designed to get the best results and how to peak at the right time for serious races.”

In the 1970s and 1980s running was popular in New Zealand.

The country was full of talented runners and coaches.

Ford said among a runner’s idols in those days were John Walker, Rod Dixon and Dick Quax.

Walker and Quax were both world record holders in their day.

Over the summer months for the next 15 years Ford and other Ashburton athletes raced most Saturdays at QEII stadium in Christchurch.

“In those days the public paid to watch races and around 30005000 people would turn up every Saturday afternoon to watch some of the best athletes in New Zealand compete,” Ford said.

Ford said he was always only an average runner.

In 15 years of competing at QEII during the summer he was never allowed to run in the A grade races.

His times of 1.56 minutes for 800m, 3.56 minutes for 1500m and 8.41 minutes for 3000m would have made him last in the A grade races, although today those times would win most A grade races in Christchurch.

“You had to run under 1.50 minutes for 800m to have any hope of winning in Christchurch and under 3.40 minutes for 1500m to have any chance of winning this event.

“Runners knew back then that if you got selected for the Canterbury team to run in Auckland you would come up against the likes of John Walker and Rod Dixon.”

After marrying at age 27, Ford’s running career suffered a major setback when he was struck down with ME (Myalgic Encephalitis), also known as chronic fatigue syndrome. At the time Ford had increased his mileage to 160km a week and was also renovating his first home.

“There were warning signs for several months that I was overdoing it.

“Then suddenly at work the

room started spinning around.

“I went home and could barely stand for the next four weeks. I was off running for 11 years.”

He tried many times to get back into it, but his body wasn’t ready.

A family holiday at Okains Bay was the turning point though.

Ford’s then 10-year-old son Ben wanted to go for a run, so Ford put on his shoes and ran 2km with his son.

It felt like a marathon and he lay down for the rest of the day, but the pair continued to run each day, and on the last day of the holiday the pair ran 7km.

“It was one of the most exciting and scariest times of my life,” Ford said.

He was excited that the horrible illness that had tortured him for 11 years may have gone, but at the same time knew he needed to be sensible.

He started back with jogs that were little more than a fast-paced walk, going out at night and in the dark on country roads, not wanting anyone to see him in case it all came crashing down.

“After three months I was running 117kms a week and that included a 20km hill run once a week.

“I was back, at 38 years old, and looking ahead to compete in veteran athletics.

“At 40 years old I briefly ran the fastest time in the world that year for 800m at 2.003 minutes.”

That was quickly overtaken by European runners in their sum-

mer season, but Ford was back on top of his game. He was doing the 1500m in 4.02 minutes and 9.16 minutes for 3km.

“It felt amazing. Every single step I ran I felt glad to be alive,” Ford said.

He was still running under 34 minutes for 10km at age 49.

“I still ran the same programmes I did in my teens and early 20s but took it carefully and watched for any warning signs,” he said.

When Ford was 50, the Canterbury earthquakes struck.

His job in insurance became busier and he only got a 15-minute jog each night in for the next year.

“I then realised that I was never going to get back what I had in my early 40s and it was time to turn to coaching the next generation of runners.”

Sadly, there were fewer around these days, Ford said.

People ran more to achieve a one-off goal like a half marathon.

Today he had a small group of runners who ran all year round and said it was great to see them running faster than they ever dreamed was possible.

“It doesn’t matter how old you are, if you want to get fit and run and follow some sound advice, you will improve.”

Ford said it was great to be able to, as a coach, put something back into a sport that had given him so much joy and happiness.

“It was hard work and a lot of sweat, but worth it.”

BY WYNNE GRAY When Aaron Smith made the All Blacks he became the key to driving a style which outflanked most opponents.

The speed of his pass gave the attack extra venom either side of the ruck while his kicking game and occasional sniping runs also put doubt into the defensive line.

That cocktail of danger has eased this season with his distribution not as sharp and the other parts of his game wavering.

He was overshadowed by Springbok livewire Faf de Klerk during the Rugby Championship then replaced by TJ Perenara for the opening tour hit-out against the Wallabies in Japan.

The All Blacks marked that test as their rehearsal for Sunday morning’s duel with England with centre Jack Goodhue and lock Brodie Retallick returning to the starting lineup.

The selectors have persisted with Damian McKenzie as the fullback, who doubles up as a second playmaker, and Sonny Bill Williams who is still to run into his best form in midfield

but they have flipped the dressrehearsal guide at halfback with Smith picked to start at Twickenham.

His game was solid in his 20 minutes as a sub against the Wallabies but there was little from that to suggest they would swap duties this weekend.

Perhaps it was always the plan.

Maybe Steve Hansen felt Smith needed a rebuff to reignite his game and the selectors have seen that emerging during the fortnight’s training the squad has for this test.

Maybe the tests Smith has played against England at home and at Twickenham persuaded the selectors his game was best suited to unsettling their rivals.

That argument has more substance when Smith’s game is in prime shape and the starting rebuff in Yokohama may have tripped that switch for the duel with the host halfback Ben Youngs.

We wondered when Hansen plucked Smith out of Super Rugby in 2012 and started him ahead of any of the previous year’s winning World Cup halfbacks but we soon learned the head coach had a rare eye for talent.

Players talk about how Hansen knows when and how to get the best out of their games. There’s no single formula fits all.

Some respond to a quiet word and others to a rark-up in front of their mates or as part of a general squad tuneup.

Apart from his self-inflicted troubles in 2016, injury or time for a rest, Smith’s form has stayed above the line and kept him in the starting role.

Wales desperate to end drought

BY IAN MCCULLOUGH Wales coach Warren Gatland says his side’s confidence will receive a huge boost if they can end their run of 13 straight defeats to Australia in Cardiff this weekend.

It’s been 10 years since the Welsh last beat the Wallabies, but despite that dismal record, local bookmakers have the hosts as slight favourites to beat Michael Cheika’s side.

Six straight wins have catapulted the Welsh to third in the world rankings – three spots above the Wallabies – and Gatland said his players are desperate to end that unwanted record before the sides meet again in Tokyo at next year’s World Cup. “We should have beaten Australia on a number of occasions over the recent years and haven’t managed to do it and we want to put that ledger right,” Gatland said.

“We are disappointed with the run of losses we’ve had against them.

“But if you look at how close a lot of those games have been, I think there’s been something like seven points, the difference between us and them on average over that period.

“This game is important for the next 12 months. It is not the most important, the pool game at the World Cup is going to be the most important one.

“This will definitely be important from a confidence point of view, and yes, it’s been welldocumented that they are under different sorts of pressures than we are.

“But the pressure for us is being favourites and being able to handle it.”

The Wallabies’ lineout has struggled in recent weeks but Gatland said he expects much improved set-pieces from the tourists after struggling against New Zealand last month.

“The lineout stuff goes in cycles,” he said.

“Certain teams dominate and get up in the air and then you see other teams sort of fix that.

“We are reasonably happy with the way our attacking lineout was.”

‘Bigger than Lions’ Coach Steve Hansen believes New Zealand’s rugby clash with England is bigger than last year’s series against the British and Irish Lions. The sold-out test follows the 2017 Lions tour when New Zealand were held to a draw on home soil and head coach Hansen is keen to make amends for that frustration.

“I think the Lions tour has made it bigger because we weren’t successful,” Hansen said. “You’ve got to be reasonably stupid if you can’t work out this is going to be big.”

Cheika backs hothead Australia coach Michael Cheika has thrown his support behind firebrand hooker Tolu Latu after handing him a surprising first start in almost two years against Wales in Cardiff. The Wallabies are looking to record a 14th successive win against the Welsh on Sunday with Latu one of four changes made by Cheika from the side that lost to New Zealand two weeks ago in Japan.

Itoje not backing down England are not concerned that Maro Itoje may be developing a reputation for ill-discipline and will continue to ask their lock to lead the charge against New Zealand. Itoje has conceded 37 penalties since the start of Eddie Jones’ tenure, second only to Dan Cole on 38.

Since the beginning of 2018, he has conceded 17 penalties. While acknowledging a need for his team to curb their penalty count Neal Hatley praised Itoje’s “huge” contribution to the scrum and lineout and insisted that the 24-year-old would continue to act as England’s chief aggressor.

England face Steve Hansen’s world champions for the first time in four years at Twickenham on Sunday. World Rugby, has instructed teams to respect the traditional challenge, where the players poke out their tongues, bulge their eyes and slap their thighs in an attempt to unsettle their opponents.

Previous All Blacks renditions of their customary Maori challenge have been met with cries of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”, but the exchange will pass former Wallabies boss Jones by.

Heywood takes top gong The Mid Canterbury rugby community came together last night to celebrate the season that was, at the annual Mid Canterbury Rugby Awards at the Hotel Ashburton.

The Guardian’s Erin Tasker takes a look at who took home all of the awards.

Rakaia prop Tom Heywood was the big winner when the Mid Canterbury Rugby Awards for the 2018 season were handed out last night.

The 21-year-old was presented with the Morgan Trophy after being named Mid Canterbury’s Heartland Championship player of the year, and the Dave Thomas Cup for being the players’ player of the year.

Heywood – who scored his first Heartland Championship try in the second game of the season against North Otago – was a workhorse throughout the season, right up until he suffered a dislocated shoulder in the final round robin match of the competition, a loss to King Country.

That injury meant he missed Mid Canterbury’s Lochore Cup semi-final against HorowhenuaKapiti, which his side lost.

Heywood was one of two of the Heartland Championship side’s front-rowers to go away with an award last night, with Matt Groom named the side’s best team man.

The Heartland Championship forward of the year was Celtic’s Angus Lindsay, while Methven’s Tyler Blackburn – despite coming off the bench for a fair chunk of the season – was named the side’s back of the year.

Another of the side’s backs also took home an award, with Rakaia’s Timoci Nabakeke presented with the Cousins Cup as Mid Canterbury’s sevens player of the year.

For the Mid Canterbury Development team, Reuben Early was named back of the year, Kalle Valimaki was named forward of the year.

Josh Tonks was best team man,

Tom Heywood and the side’s player of the year was Luke Gilbert.

Taking home the awards for the age grade Mid Canterbury representative players of the year were William Tod (under-18), Ben Donald (under-16) and Josh Dunlea (under-14), who also won the Robert Woodham Under-14 Cup. The big winner out of the clubs was Celtic, named Mid Canterbury’s club of the year after its drought-breaking win in the Watters Cup this season, while the coach of that side – Shane Enright – went home with the Neville Goodwin Memorial Trophy after being named Mid Canterbury’s coach of the year.

Enright and the rest of his coaching team – Geoff Wright and Matt Winter – were also named the open grade coaches of the year.

As well as the Watters Cup, Celtic also finished the season with the Max Gilbert Challenge Trophy, while Rakaia won the Dave White Memorial Trophy.

Of the special awards up for

grabs in open grade rugby, Methven captain James McLeod was awarded the Body Cup for being the best open grade captain, while his team won the Heartland Bank Positive Play Award.

Both of those awards were selected by the Mid Canterbury Referees’ Association.

Celtic first-five Nathan McCloy was presented with the MB Roulston Cup for having scored the most points in senior rugby this season.

The Roy Smith Memorial (for best conduct, dress etc in open grade rugby) was won by the Southern senior Bs. Rakaia was the top team in senior B rugby this season though, locking away the Michael Duff Memorial Trophy, the Centennial Mug, the Second Grade Cup and the Bruce Beckley Cup for the summer.

For the officials, the Ant McGirr Trophy for the Mid Canterbury referee of the year went to Christopher O’Malley, while the Life Members Cup for outstanding contribution to refereeing went to Matt Gallagher.

The Findlay Cup for commitment to refereeing was taken home by Nathan Forbes, the Pierce Trophy for the most improved referee went to Hamish Grant, and the MacPherson Family Intermediate and Junior referee of the year was Jason O’Connor.

The Philip McDonald Cup for volunteer services to rugby went to Johnny Galbraith.

In the teenage grades, the coaches of the year were Mati Morrison and Brentton Donaldson, who led the Celtic Under-18 team to wins in both the local

competition and the Mid Canterbury/South Canterbury/Ellesmere competition.

That side won the Rudstone Cup and Kevin Dwyer Memorial Trophy for taking out the local competition, and the Leigh Mackintosh Trophy for the combined competition.

For the under-16s, the HN Edge Cup and Russell Kelly Memorial Cup from the local competition went to Hampstead, as did the James Paton Memorial Trophy from the combined competition.

In the colts grade the MCRU Cup was presented to Methven/ Rakaia.

Down in the junior grades, the Agrifarm Machinery Limited JAB Town v Country Trophy was won

by Country, while the junior club coaches of the year were named as Phil Prendergast, Randal Hanrahan and AJ Wessels from the Celtic Under 11.5 team.

The junior club awards went the way of Methven Black (the under 11.5 John Smitheram Centurion Shield), Celtic Green (the under 11.5 MCRU Cup), Allenton/ Southern/Tinwald Combined (the under 13 Murray Roulston Centurion Shield), Methven (the under 13 Summerfield Cup), Collegiate (the under-14.5 Jock Ross Centurion Shield) and the Methven/Tinwald boys (under 14.5 MCRU Cup).

The Bruce Printing Tray for the best average points in JAB rugby was won by Methven under-13, while the Stirling Sports Fair Play Award (selected by referees) was won by the Mt Somers under-8s, and the Len Sandrey Trophy (for the best conduct, dress etc in JAB rugby) went to Methven.

A stellar season in which Celtic broke a long Watters Cup-winning drought, saw Celtic named club of the year.

■ NZ CUP WEEK

Time to go racing Racing’s biggest week of the year begins today for another instalment. Some of the biggest names and most impressive animals will be on show during the course of the next seven days, competing for some of the biggest prizes in the country. A plethora of thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing will complement the week. Guardian editor, Matt Markham has a look at the three codes and what they might have to offer over the next week.

Thoroughbred There’s no real let down period from the incredible experience that is Melbourne Cup week.

In fact, it’s straight out of the frying pan and into the fire with three big days of racing from the historic Riccarton Racecourse in western Christchurch.

Today’s meeting is one of the biggest with the 2000 Guineas for the three-year-olds one of the big attractions of the week.

These horses are the potential superstars of the sport and will go on and win some of the biggest races in Australasia in the future.

On Wednesday racing returns to Riccarton for Couplands Mile day, a slightly more low-key affair than the other two days of racing, but a big day out all the same.

Things then wind up on Saturday next week with the NZ Galloping Cup and the running of the 1000 Guineas for the fillies.

Huge crowds will flock into the course for the meeting and while most won’t know who wins each race, the atmosphere is always electric.

The race to Watch: The 2000 Guineas today – a great race, full of great horses.

The horse to spend a dollar on: Attimo – part-owned by yours truly and looking at starts both today and next Saturday.

She’s good enough to get some chocolates on either occasion.

The jockey to keep an eye on: Danielle Johnson – One of the best in the business and sure to be prominent throughout the week.

The local to look out for: Signify – a smart sprinter trained

Harness People will be able to tell you how many editions of Cup Day they’ve been to over the years.

In brief Shillelagh top chance Sydney-based trainer Chris Waller is looking for more Group One spoils at Flemington with Savabeel mare Shillelagh after she took out the Gr.1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) last Saturday.

She will back up this Saturday to contest the Gr.1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) where she will jump from barrier six under in-form hoop James McDonald. “She backs up from last Saturday where she was an impressive winner and that was against the girls at weight-forage,” Waller said.

Mark Two to bounce back New Zealand-trained four-year-old Mark Two will contest the Australian Turf Club Handicap (2000m) at Rosehill today, with connections confident the daughter of Pins can return to her best. Prepared

by Stephen Marsh for Go Racing, Mark Two was a strong winner at Gosford last month before disappointing when ninth at Randwick last start. “It should be a good track and from barrier two she will get a nice run. The event of course all centres around the $800,000 New Zealand Trotting Cup, a 3200m test of true stamina which is only won by the greats.

two other Group One races and then things return on Friday for another big day of racing action where the Dominion Handicap takes centre stage.

And as if those two big days aren’t enough, there’s a meeting chucked in on our back doorstep at Ashburton on Thursday for good measure.

The race to watch: The Dominion Handicap on Show Day. The best trotters in the land all vying for supremacy over their rivals.

The horse to spend a dollar on: Monty Python looks a great place bet in the Dominion Handicap next Friday.

Failing all else, just spend $1 each way on all of the All Star horses over the week and you’re sure to turn a profit.

Greyhounds Often seen as the poorer sibling of the three racing codes, the greyhounds don’t get enough recognition for the high-speed thrill that the sport provides.

Extremely quick and agile animals sprinting around a small track at breakneck speed is quite a remarkable spectacle.

Their big event comes on Thursday night for the New Zealand Greyhound Cup, and also the Galaxy Sprint which sees the best dogs in the land strutting their stuff.

It’s a great, relaxing night on an otherwise hectic schedule and the racing over the course of the night is top notch.

The race to watch: The Cup – a true contest of grit and determination from these incredible athletes. There’s no love lost, but plenty of action. It’s an incredible spectacle.

The dog to spend a dollar on: Dyna Dave: Love his chances in the NZ Cup on Thursday night.

He’s racing well and only needs that wee slice of luck to be grabbing success in the big one.

The trainer to follow: Craig Roberts: Low-flying at the moment with plenty of winners and will be heading into the week brimming with confidence.

Strong hands in all the feature races.

The local to look out for: Bruce Dann – never short of a handy greyhound or two and has a nice team around him at the moment.

Should be in amongst the action at some point during the week.

A crack at the Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at Trentham is in the offing for impressive Pukekohe maiden winner Contrary Mary. The Matt Goodson and Dianna Perron-bred and raced Rip Van Winkle filly came from last to score by threequarters of a length for trainer Richard Collett and jockey Andrew Calder. “She’s quite smart. She’s pulled up a little shin-sore so we’ll give her a bit of a let-up but we think she could develop into an Oaks filly,” Collett said.

Collett puts polish on An impost of 60kg is tempering Pukekohe trainer Richard Collett’s confidence that his talented mare Untamed Diamond can make it back-to-back wins in the Listed Legacy Lodge Sprint (1200m) at Te Rapa today. Snitzel six-year-old Untamed Diamond carried 57kg to win the sprint last year under Trudy Thornton and while Collett was pleased with her preparation for this year’s race, he felt the extra weight was the biggest obstacle to defending her crown.

First Cup start for Sam Driver Samantha Ottley will start chasing her NZ Cup dream with Forgotten Highway on Tuesday. The group 1 winning reinswoman will have her first drive in the 3200m feature behind the Mitchell Kerrtrained pacer. Ottley is thrilled to have booked her chance to win New Zealand’s greatest race. “It is the biggest race of the year and you dream of having a drive in it and it is finally happening,” she said. Ottley, Kerr and Forgotten Highway form what could be considered a rookie attack on this year’s Cup. Kerr is also having his first crack at the event with a horse having just his third Gr.1 start. Tough game for rep side

Mid Canterbury’s senior rep cricketers will head to Rangiora tomorrow as the build-up to their 2018/19 Hawke Cup campaign continues.

Mid Canterbury is set to play a 60-over game against a Canterbury Country XI at Mainpower Oval, a first-class cricket venue, and Mid Canterbury coach Garfield Charles was looking forward to seeing what his side could produce against what was likely to be a class opposition.

Charles had named 13 players to make the trip to Rangiora tomorrow, with a couple of changes having been made from the one that took to the field a couple of weeks ago in Timaru in the annual Ron Biggar Memorial match against South Canterbury.

The game ended up being a washout and as the defending champions from the previous season, South Canterbury held on to the trophy for another season.

Matt Winter would again captain the Mid Canterbury side tomorrow, which included a number of up and coming cricketers.

Canterbury Under-19 opening bowler and lower order batsman Will Graham had been included in the side, as had Canterbury Under-17 and Christchurch Boys’ High School (CBHS) first XI batsman and leg spinner Archie Redfern.

Another member of the CBHS first XI, Will Smith, was also in the squad but he would not bowl as he was on the comeback trail after suffering a stress fracture in his lower back.

Lauriston, Coldstream battle for top spot At least one of today’s scheduled games in open grade cricket’s Pritchard Shield competition has fallen victim to yesterday’s heavy rain across Mid Canterbury.

Today’s round was meant to see Methven host the Tech Stags at the Methven Domain, but the wet weather had deemed the pitch unplayable so the pin was pulled late yesterday afternoon.

A week later though, in the first round of the Pritchard Shield Lauriston got one back, beating

the Stags by 24 runs after posting just 92 in its first innings, which proved to be enough.

The other game of round one was also a low-scoring affair, with Methven all out for just 78 against Coldstream, which was chased down for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs.

Jay Houston was the star for Coldstream, taking 5/17 with the ball before also hitting his side’s second highest score in the runs chase to help see his side home.

The Black Caps have sprung a major surprise, calling in veteran spinner Will Somerville into their test squad to play Pakistan later this month. Somerville only this year returned to New Zealand, after spending a decade in Australia.

Remarkably, six of those years came without him playing toplevel cricket, with the Wellingtonborn 34-year-old playing grade cricket in Sydney from 2008-2014, before being picked for New South Wales. Indian spinner comes up with a new wrinkle An Indian under-23s player has sent the cricketing world crazy with a stunning innovation in a domestic competition.

The bowler, named Shiva Singh, was playing for Uttar Pradesh against Bengal in the CK Nayudu Trophy, the four-day domestic under-23 tournament.

During Bengal’s second innings, Singh pulled out the new ball,

turning 360 degrees before delivering the ball.

The umpire immediately called a dead ball and the vision went viral.

Singh said it was not the first time he had bowled the delivery, but it was the first time he had been called for a dead ball.

Shiva compared the actions to a switch hit for batsmen.

“I use different variations in onedayers and T20s so I thought of doing the same because the Bengal batsmen were developing a partnership,” Shiva said.

“The umpires said dead ball, so I asked “why are you calling it a dead ball?”

“I delivered this 360-degree ball in the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well, where it was fine. Batsman always

go for the reverse-sweep or the switch hit. But when bowlers do something like this it’s deemed a dead ball.”

Australian umpiring great Simon Taufel disagreed, saying “the intent of the reverse action is different”.

The law says “Either umpire shall call and signal Dead ball when … there is an instance of a

deliberate attempt to distract under either of Laws 41.4 (Deliberate attempt to distract striker) or 41.5 (Deliberate distraction, deception or obstruction of batsman). The ball shall not count as one of the over.”

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan said the ball was great and encouraged more bowling innovation.

Allenton on winning roll Allenton cemented its spot as the team to beat in this season’s Mid Canterbury Tennis A grade interclub competition last week.

The Allenton side is the only unbeaten team now after three rounds of competition, and will be looking to keep that momentum up against Tinwald today.

Tinwald is one of two sides with two victories to its name so far this season, including a convincing 5-1 victory over Southern last weekend.

Just who will take to the court for Allenton today as unclear at this stage, as it is one of a couple of teams battling for numbers at the moment, but Sam Bubb was likely to lead the team from number one, with Andre van Rooyen at two and Bryn Looij at three.

The Tinwald side featured a new player to the local scene this season at number one, Cameron McCracken, and he is yet to drop a singles match this season.

He has lost just one match, a doubles match back in round one in his side’s opening loss to Methven.

Methven is the other unbeaten team heading into round three, but lost to Hampstead last weekend, and will be looking to get back in the winners’ circle against Southern today.

Methven is this year led by Edwin Dargue at one, and has a lot of experience down the order, with Peter Kirwan, Lee Gilbert, Josh Jones and Henry Ross rounding out the side.

The Southern side, led by Jason Feutz at number one, has picked up just one win so far this season.

The day’s other match up will see Fairton searching for its first win of the season against Hampstead.

Fairton is likely to be without its number one Rhys Cromie, who was struggling with a leg injury, setting up a possible top singles match between Fairton’s Tyler Leonard and Hampstead’s Aidan Mitchell.

Interclub tennis will then take a break next weekend, as it is show weekend.

Mundine takes offence Anthony Mundine has slammed Jeff Horn’s camp for claiming the former boxing champion may be tempted to take prohibited substances to make weight for their November 30 fight. ENROLMENT CONSULTATION FOR ASHBURTON BOROUGH SCHOOL To avoid overcrowding, or the likelihood of overcrowding, at Ashburton Borough School the Ministry of Education has developed an enrolment scheme. This enrolment scheme is to be implemented from the beginning of Term 1, Monday 4 February 2019.

Under this scheme, students will be entitled to be enrolled if they live within the home zones. There are two home zones for this school. The smaller of the two applies to students in Years 1 to 6, with a larger zone for students in Y7 to 8 to allow all local students access to their most convenient school. The enrolment of out of zone students is governed by the provisions of the Education Act 1989.

The enrolment scheme, which includes a precise description of the home zone, may be viewed at the school office, or on the school’s website www.ashborough.school.nz The new zones do not affect students already enrolled at the school. CARTER, Gordon Thomas (Gordy) – We are sad to advise that Gordon passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, aged 76 years. Loved husband of Helena, respected father of Munro and Mara, and dearly loved father of Tryphena, Grandad Gordon of Eva, twin son of the late Thomas Francis (T.F.) and Emma Carter (nee Tod), younger brother of Peter and Helen, the late Norma and the late John Inwood, Catherine and Bill Denton, and the late Roger.
