The disappearance of 11 calves and the shooting of one has renewed warnings on social media for farmers to watch out for rural prowlers.

Two Facebook posts have been urging farmers to be vigilant after 11 calves went missing and one was shot.

Myriam Birt posted to Methven Noticeboard asking for any sightings or information after 11 jersey heifer calves disappeared. “If anyone has any sight-

ing of wandering calves or has seen any suspicious activity on Friday or Saturday night, can you please let us or the police know,” the post said.

KiwiRail land change won’t affect district

If you’re leasing a piece of land that’s owned by KiwiRail then you could be in for a nasty surprise when your next rent bill arrives.

As part of its nationwide campaign to formalise the use of its land by adjoining property owners, the rail company is taking a long, hard look at the land it owns and the use that land is currently being put to.

Just how significant the review

could be for some private property owners who have used KiwiRail land as part of their holding for decades, was demonstrated on a recent Fair Go programme.

But a quick check indicates there are unlikely to be any property owners in the Ashburton District in for a similar surprise.

KiwiRail’s ongoing review of its land in the Ashburton District has shown that almost all land next to the rail corridor is already the subject of legal agreements and

Smith has been a manager on the farm for the past seven years and said this is the first time something like this has happened.

He said he is worried whoever did it will come back, because they know the calves are there and they know they can get access through the council land.

“I think it’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt or killed because I think farmers have had enough of this,” “It’s our livelihood, they may think if just one or two go missing it’s not going to hurt but at the end of the day it does hurt big time,” he said,

Muka prints tempt young art lovers Ashburton’s art gallery became an adult free zone yesterday as the district’s youngsters, inspected, studied and finally selected works of art they wanted to buy.

The annual Muka Print exhibition has had Ashburton as a regular stopping point on its itinerary for several years and each year it provides young people with an opportunity to buy art that appeals to them without any adult input or persuasion.

The one-day exhibition features original signed prints by

well-known artists and gives five to 18-year-olds the opportunity to buy art, with no adults allowed in the exhibition space.

The exhibition’s philosophy is about appreciating art for the way it connects with an individual rather than expressing its value according to money. The works are sold at a low price and the names of artists are covered to ensure the young art collectors choose a piece because it appeals to them rather than for its likely monetary value.

“However it is not envisaged that Ashburton residents will be majorly affected by the national review of land which is currently being undertaken throughout the country.

Should the situation change,

KiwiRail will make contact with individual landowners with any specific concerns,” Beedell said.

KiwiRail is one of New Zealand’s biggest land owners with 18,000 hectares of land. In the past, this has not always been properly documented or managed, particularly around the rail corridor.

“It is important KiwiRail knows what is on its land, what it is being used for, and who is using it, both for safety reasons and as

good business practice. To this end, a review of KiwiRail land is currently being undertaken.”

To use KiwiRail’s land appropriate documentation is required.

The cost of a licence is minimal and mainly covers administration costs. There is no obligation for anyone to pay to use KiwiRail land if they do not wish to do so. If those using KiwiRail land do not wish to do so, then they need only move back to within their own property boundary.

Gavin Borthwick says he’d never describe himself a snappy dresser but the judges for Tuesday’s New Zealand Trotting Cup fashion stakes would say otherwise.

And their opinion is the one that counts when it comes to sorting out the winner from the rest.

Borthwick entered the stakes to support his girlfriend Debbie Breading who was a willing, if nervous starter. He went along for the ride, never dreaming he’d win.

He hadn’t been a cup day attendee for years but when someone offered the pair free tickets they decided to go all out, dress to the nines and enjoy a day out.

With Breading as his stylist, Borthwick donned last season’s suit with the addition of a new shirt and tie and a hat decorated with a band he created out of a tie. Breading wore a dress designed by herself and made by her mother.

The pair had entered one fashion stakes before, at the Auckland Derby but finished back in the field.

While Borthwick says he’s more at home wearing his workboots, trousers and polo shirt to work, he said he felt pretty relaxed in the fashion stakes line up.

“I enjoy dressing up and it doesn’t bother me getting up in front of a crowd,” he said.

The couple hadn’t had much luck on track, but the big win made their day, but it was a while before they could relax and celebrate.

“There was about an hour of bloody photos and media stuff afterwards,” Borthwick said. v His suit won’t be staying in the wardrobe for long as the couple will be making their traditional pilgrimage to Riccarton races on Saturday.

The prize haul was impressive – a holiday week on Australia’s Sunshine Coast, $2000 worth of vouchers, a $1000 watch and a magnum of champagne.

Perseverance is the key for top student Taylor

Perseverance was key for Ashburton College’s year 11 top student.

Chrizia Cayanan, 16, was awarded the Ashburton High School Centennial Trust Top Scholar Award at the Year 11 prize giving on Tuesday afternoon.

Cayanan did not expect to receive the award but was happy to have received it.

She said the start of NCEA Level 1 was a step-up from last year’s study and was hard at first but as the year went on she soon adapted to it.

Cayanan had heaps of people who helped her through the year.

She will sit her first exam, English, today which will be followed

by Science, Maths, Accounting, German and Music in the weeks to come.

Sol Gonzalez, 17, had success at the Year 11 prizegiving where, along with Cayanan, she was awarded the Thistle Masonic Lodge Prize for Citizenship.

Gonzalez felt really proud that she had won the prize and proud of the school.

Gonzalez said she did the hard work because she enjoyed it.

“I [studied hard] because I like it.”

She is slightly worried about her English exam today but said she has studied for it and will try her best.

NZ shares tumble as Trump takes lead New Zealand shares tumbled as Donald Trump took the lead in the US presidential race yesterday, with every stock on the benchmark index dropping.

Xero, Heartland Bank and SkyCity Entertainment Group led the decline.

The S&P/NZX 50 Index dropped 3.3 per cent - the biggest percentage loss in over five years - or 230.14 points, to 6,664.22.

Every stock in the index fell.

Turnover was $138 million.

“With Trump leading and forecasts showing he’s got a pretty good chance of winning, it’s certainly brought equity markets

under significant pressure this afternoon,” said Grant Williamson, director at Hamilton Hindin Greene. “It’s across the board, investors are very nervous and starting to see the writing on the wall so are beginning to hop out rather quickly.”

Markets across Asia plummeted in the afternoon’s trading.

At 5.15pm local time, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 was down 1.9 per cent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng had fallen 2.8 per cent, and Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down 4.5 per cent.

“We can expect a fair amount more volatility on Thursday,” Williamson said. “He’s a really

unknown quantity, the market hates uncertainty and I think that’s what’s going to happen for some time if they see Trump succeed. It really is unknown territory, we had the UK exit but this is a lot bigger than that, it’s going to be interesting days ahead.”

Xero, an often volatile stock with a large number of foreign investors, was the worst performer on the index, down 5.8 per cent to $16.95. Heartland Bank dropped 5.3 per cent to $1.42 and Skycity Entertainment Group fell 5.2 per cent to $3.44.

Mainfreight was one of the least-worst performers, down 0.6

per cent to $18.50. The transport and logistics group posted a 27 per cent gain in first-half profit to $41.8 million as margins improved in New Zealand, Australia, Asia and Europe, and expects a continuation of stronger trading in the second half. Sales climbed to $1.14 billion from $1.11 billion.

Outside the benchmark index, Mercer Group was unchanged at 1.3 cents. The unprofitable stainless steel fabricator plans to buy Hastings-based Haden & Custance for $2.25 million as it transitions to a food processing and packaging.

One of New Zealand’s most highprofile inmates has been refused an early release from prison yesterday, but will have another chance to plead his case in March.

Arthur William Taylor, who turned 60 earlier this year, has spent almost 40 years of his life behind bars.

He is currently serving a sentence of 17 years and six months for serious violent and drug-related offending.

Yesterday was his 17th appearance before the board.

It is understood a crucial report requested by the board was not completed for yesterday’s hearing.

As a result they refused to grant Taylor parole and stood him down until March next year.

It is understood Taylor is disappointed with yesterday’s decision as it means he will spend another Christmas behind bars away from his family, who he is extremely close to.

Last week the Herald revealed that Taylor planned to study towards a formal legal qualification when he is released with a view to helping people who cannot afford lawyers.

Taylor has more than 150 convictions for offences including bank robbery, burglary, fraud and drugs.

He has been behind bars on and off for 38 years and is currently doing his time at Auckland Prison.

Taylor became infamous in 1998 after he escaped from the maximum security prison at Paremoremo north of Auckland.

He and three others including double murderer Graeme Burton managed to break out of the prison and make their way to the Coromandel, where they hunkered down in luxury holiday homes and the bush to evade authorities.

In recent years he has been in the headlines for his role as “jailhouse lawyer”.

Manhunt continues Tauranga police continue searching for masked men responsible for holding a gun to the head of a lone bar worker and tying her hands behind her back at part of a “terrifying” robbery this week.

Tauranga police have yesterday released images of people they believe could help them in their investigations.

About 1am Tuesday, two men forced their way into Cheers Tavern at Owens Place by breaking through a front window.

Detective Sergeant Craig Rawlinson of Tauranga CIB said the sole worker in the bar at the time was forced at gunpoint across the tavern and onto the floor beside the bar where she was bound with her hands behind her back.

The offenders then took a sum of cash before running from the bar, leaving the worker still bound on the floor, Mr Rawlinson said.

“This was a terrifying encounter for the victim, being led with a firearm against the back of her head and bound with her hands behind her back,” said Detective Sergeant Craig Rawlinson of Tauranga CIB. Both the males in the CCTV images provided with balaclavas over their faces.

Mr Rawlinson said the first male they would like to speak to was of medium build and wore dark jeans and a black hooded top. The second male is taller than the first, of a heavy build and was wearing dark pants and a blue t-shirt over a grey hooded top.

Science roadshow excites students

Almost 1000 students from Ashburton schools had their neurons accelerated and their curiosity piqued as they learned about the varied nature of science.

Ashburton Intermediate School hosted 13 other schools from last Friday to Tuesday for The Science Roadshow which taught students about the unique properties of materials and sounds.

Ashburton students experienced the Sounding Out Waves show and the Mighty Material show – acts designed to display the curious effects sound can have and the versatility of different materials.

The Science Roadshow presenter Anna-Sophie Winter said the shows were practical and brought forth a side of science that cannot be gained from books.

Schools do not always have the room or equipment to teach

in the same way the roadshow does, she said.

After each of the shows the students had the chance to play around with some of the equipment.

From an earthquake simulator, a 3D printer, to measuring how fast the students can throw, it was all there to teach students while they had practical fun.

Winter said she loved travelling from school to school and thought it was a good way to get kids from all schools

interested in science.

The roadshow teaches more than 45,000 kids a year and helps students in rural school to have an alternate perspective of science, she said.

Ashburton Intermediate School principal Brent Gray said the roadshow was highly interactive and hands-on, which meant students gained practical experience in a short amount of time.

“The roadshow is a fantastic way to get children excited by science,” he said.

Government , Maori Party in RMA deal The party’s co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell said proposed changes to the Resource Management Act go “beyond anything that currently exists for Maori outside of a Treaty settlement”.

Co-leader Marama Fox said new provisions known as iwi participation agreements would “give iwi a chance to engage like they have never been able to engage before”.

They made the comments after the Government agreed to give iwi a greater role in consent decisions in exchange for the Maori Party’s vote for the stalled reforms.

The RMA reforms are designed to simplify and speed up the consenting process, which Government says is critical to building more houses and constructing them more cheaply.

Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, Environment Minister Nick Smith said the Government supported the Maori Party’s call for improved iwi participation.

Minister for the Environment Dr Nick Smith “This enables iwi and councils to enter into agreements on how iwi can be involved in resource management process so as to insure their perspective is heard and understood,” Smith said.

The iwi participation agreements were included in the original bill, but required further refinement before the Mao-

ri Party came on board.

They have proved controversial and are opposed by New Zealand First and the Act Party.

Smith said the legislation would return to Parliament tomorrow.

He said it was critical to improving environmental management, increasing the supply and affordability of housing, and supporting economic growth.

He described it as the most comprehensive reform to the RMA since its creation 25 years ago.

RMA reforms were first proposed in 2013 but collapsed because of opposition by the Maori Party and United Future to the removal of environmental protections.

A revised bill was introduced last December, with the support of the Maori Party at the first stage and subject to further consultation about iwi participation.

Preschooler ran for his life A little boy has described the terrifying moment a giant tree crashed down on to his friends at an Auckland daycare centre playground.

Two children remain in hospital after being struck by a jacaranda tree which toppled over in blustery winds at Discoveries Educare in Epsom on Tuesday afternoon.

The centre was closed yesterday as investigators look at what led to the sudden uprooting of the tree and the horrific aftermath.

Four pre-schoolers struck by branches were rushed to hospital.

Two were treated at the emergency department and went home.

The three-year-old made a loud noise as he described the moment the tree suddenly crashed down across the playground where he was playing with his friends.

“I was running away,” he said.

“My friend got hurt on their eyes.”

Today his relieved mum said all parents and teachers had been left in shock.

“My son has been at the centre for three years and it’s a really good school.

She said her son had not been left too shaken from the ordeal.

“He’s not really scared because he ran away and the teachers took him to the centre.”

Kiwi-educated author to write new Dylan book A New Zealand-educated Harvard professor has signed a publishing deal to write a new book on Bob Dylan.

University of Auckland PhD graduate Richard F Thomas, a world-renowned Dylanologist, has been signed by Dey Street Books to write Why Dylan Matters.

The legendary singer-songwriter behind such generationalspanning mega-hits as Blowin’ In The Wind and Like A Rolling Stone, was a controversial winner of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature.

Thomas appears to be a perfect fit to write a book on Dylan’s importance to literature, music, art

and popular culture.

London-born Thomas teaches a freshman course on Dylan, which aims to put the notoriously reclusive artist’s impressive canon in a historical context.

The book, publishers say, sets out with a similar aim: “Why the words and lyrics of Dylan endure and inspire generations, explor-

ing Dylan’s music through the lens of popular culture, Western literature, and in the tradition of classical poets like Virgil and Homer, and decoding and contextualising Dylan’s lyrics for a new generation of fans.”

In brief Guilty plea A guilty plea from a former Ministry of Transport manager who defrauded it of almost three quarters of a million dollars. Jo Harrison admitted three charges of dishonestly taking or using a document. They were charges laid by the Serious Fraud Office. The money involved totals $726,000.

The 50-year-old appeared in the Manukau District Court, and will be sentenced next month.

Harrison was in Canada when her offending came to light but she came back voluntarily before being charged.

Govt skills initiative The Government’s ratcheting up its initiatives to create more jobs.

It’s announced two more skills hubs designed to provide apprenticeship training on construction sites. It’s part of the Government’s updated Building Skilled and Safe Workplaces’ report. Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce says that includes increasing funding for workbased training to $183 million. He says they are putting $10 million more into apprenticeships next year, with the target to get 50 thousand people in training. Joyce says currently there are 42,000 apprentices.

Trump triumphs in election Donald Trump has reached the cusp of presidential victory, a stunner for Democrats, Republicans and all who underestimated him.

Capping a campaign of venom, audacity and history, Trump scored major victories in Florida, Ohio and North Carolina yesterday, building steam in a stunningly competitive contest with Hillary Clinton that raged across battlegrounds late into the night.

Victory in Pennsylvania in the wee hours nudged him close to the prize, with Clinton having practically no path to the presidency.

Republicans kept control of the House and were on track to do so in the Senate, meaning a switch to unified government appeared in the cards.

Clinton pocketed Virginia — a squeaker like Florida — and both candidates rolled up victories in their predictable strongholds. But nothing else was predictable as the man who faced a huge climb to the presidency inched closer to it, in an election that laid bare the divisions gnawing at the nation.

Trump flipped Iowa, a state that twice voted for Democrat Barack Obama. He won Utah, a slam-dunk for most Republicans but a state where many

The struggle over whom to support was voiced by two voters in Independence, Missouri, after casting their ballots.

“I had such a hard time, harder than I’ve ever had,” said Joyce Dayhill, 59, a school bus driver who “reluctantly” voted for Trump. “I just prayed on it as hard as I could and felt this

was the right decision.”

Said Clinton voter Richard Clevenger, 58: “I think Trump’s not stable. But I can’t say there was really anything Hillary’s shown me that made me feel like voting for her. But Trump just doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing, and he’s surrounded by the Mickey Mouse Club.”

The first states to be decided yesterday produced expected results: Kentucky, Indiana, Oklahoma, West Virginia, South Carolina and Tennes-

see went for Trump; Vermont, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware and the District of Columbia for Clinton.

In later waves, Trump added Texas, Kansas, Georgia and more to his column while Clinton took New York and Illinois, each reaping significant gains in the contest for 270 electoral votes but still searching for a breakout. Trump’s trio of wins in Florida, Ohio and North Carolina may have provided it.

Third body found on suspect’s property Investigators have expanded their search for human remains beyond the South Carolina property where they discovered a woman chained inside a storage container after the landowner confessed to a 13-year-old quadruple slaying and led them to graves where he says two bodies are buried.

Todd Kohlhepp, 45, became a suspect in at least seven deaths in the days after a woman was found last week chained by her neck and ankle in a metal storage container on his property near rural Woodruff.

The body of her boyfriend was found a day later. Following his arrest, Kohlhepp confessed to a 2003 quadruple slaying at a motorcycle shop in the small town of Chesnee, said Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright.

He was denied bond on four murder charges for gunning down the motorcycle shop’s owner, service manager, mechanic and bookkeeper.

Wright has said Kohlhepp gave details only the killer would know. His confession came a day before the 13th anniversary of the crime, which

many feared would never be solved.

Wright is now investigating what appears to be a crime spree stretching across more than a decade.

The search for human remains has now expanded to other properties he owns or used to own, including places outside of South Carolina, Wright said Sunday. He declined to elaborate.

Kohlhepp showed investigators where he says he buried two other victims on the property he bought two years ago.

Human remains were un-

covered at one of those sites, Wright said.

“We’re not even close” to identifying the remains or cause of death, he said. “We can’t tell anything.” Kohlhepp did not tell investigators who was buried there.

The gravesites Kohlhepp pointed to are in addition to the body found late last week in a shallow grave at the site.

Authorities identified that victim as the boyfriend of the woman found.

Clevenger said he died of multiple gunshot wounds.

The star attended the fire station in the exclusive neighbourhood, which offers curbside voting. The special service is usually offered in a few locations to voters with a disability or for those who can’t stand in line. Miley is one of a number of stars revealing their voting choice on social media which Miley said was for Clinton.

Prince Harry snaps After nine days of relentless scrutiny of his relationship with Suits actress Meghan Markle, Prince Harry has finally snapped.

In a shock move, the popular royal released an official statement through Kensington Palace warning everyone to back off from his “girlfriend” of a “few months”. He added that the 35-year-old divorced star had faced “the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments”. It’s an absolute first for the 32-year-old Prince, and it’s likely to mean just one thing: this love story is the Real Deal. London’s The Telegraph suggested the statement said a lot about Harry’s hopes of marriage.

T

he US election has dominated the headlines across the world making it difficult to escape the comedy of errors that could well be colouring the world’s future.

It’s an odd thing, the obsession with this election but it could have everything to do with the way in which so many people are obsessed with the antics of celebrities of all shapes and sizes.

For many, life is lived vicariously through the people who exist in the celluloid world bubble.

And unlike our elections close to home where we have everyday candidates with every-day lives making a pitch for votes, the American election pitched candidates of a very different nature into the limelight, both spotlight lovers whose campaigns were run on entertainment as much as substance.

That election campaign was just one more American reality television show, one more American spectacle, but today the world will be sifting through the rubble of that long and expensive vote chasing effort and wondering just how different the future will be.

It’s unfortunate that our own elections do not generate even a smidgen of the fervour the American election generated. Yes most of it was show and sham but it did engage the nation. Our elections come and go and half of the country doesn’t bat an eye, let alone turn out to vote.

We might have candidates with integrity, candidates who believe in their cause rather than showmanship and candidates who’re standing for all the right reasons, but we don’t get the voter engagement.

Who’s got it right?

The acid test of the Americans’ presidential choice will come in the months ahead as the dust settles and the American people begin to understand the implications of their vote casting. They won’t be alone. Indications that the rest of the world’s fortunes will be rising or falling on the choice of president was already evident yesterday as the world’s share markets looked like the print out from a seismograph.

New Zealand’s elections might be tame affairs by American standards, but at least they’re based on the right values and principles rather than on personalities and who can throw the most mud.

Govt lifts apprenticeship funding The government has lifted funding for new apprenticeships and is looking at ways to reduce the country’s reliance foreign workers as it prepares to adjust immigration policy settings to try to make the workforce better.

Ministers Steven Joyce and Michael Woodhouse yesterday updated the Building Skilled and Safe Workplaces chapter in the government’s Business Growth Agenda outlining a series of initiatives to develop the nation’s labour mar-

ket and raise productivity. Among those was an increase in the apprenticeship target to have 50,000 in training by 2020, which attracted an extra $10 million on top of what was announced in the budget to add 1400 places next year.

The chapter describes a new sector workforce engagement programme where the government has engaged with the building, tourism, dairy, horticulture/viticulture, and transport industries to try and match skilled staff to local

employers, with a priority on New Zealanders in lieu of immigration.

At the same time, the chapter signals a government review of immigration policy over the next year will seek “to improve the long-term labour market contribution of temporary and permanent migration”, name-checking temporary work settings to increase incentives for firms to hire and train locals, and skilled migrant settings to give priority to higher-skilled and higher-paid migrants.

When the fraud was uncovered, Kimiangatau admitted the offending and set about repaying the money through selling her house, using her superannuation and her savings.

Winter told the court Kimiangatau and her family were now in a significantly worse position than before the offending and had significant remorse, shown through her voluntary repayment.

He submitted a starting point of 4.5 to 5.5 years was appropriate with discounts for the mitigating factors.

Judge Bergseng said Kimiangatau’s fraud involved a “relatively high degree of sophistication” and the motivated was “lifestylerelated”.

He gave a starting point of six years in prison, with discounts given for her guilty plea, remorse and previous good character landing at a final sentence of three years, two months.

Worker jailed for $1.8m fraud A woman who defrauded Auckland Airport of $1.8 million has been sent to prison for three years and two months.

Teremoana Kimiangatau, 54, was sentenced today at the Manukau District Court after earlier pleading guilty on all three charges of “obtaining by deception”, laid by the Serious Fraud Office [SFO].

The former airport accounts clerk, of 18 years, had transferred funds from the company’s bank account to her own account.

She did this by changing the client bank account numbers to her own within the airport’s accounting system.

After the offending was uncovered, Kimiangatau repaid all of the money except for a shortfall of about $200,000.

Yesterday, Crown prosecutor Gareth Kayes submitted a starting point of six to seven years imprisonment was appropriate with discounts given for the miti-

rowers and make it easier for them to repay their debt, but couldn’t say whether there had been an increase in the second half of the financial year after the first arrest was publicised in January.

“We certainly have an increased amount of contact from overseas-based borrowers following the arrest at the border, as we continue to grow our social communications,” White said.

Green MP James Shaw asked whether the new IT system the IRD is in the process of building would be able to handle a progressive rate of repayments for loan borrowers, as one hypothesis was that a variable rate would encourage low earners to stay and make repayments sooner.

“The new system has got the ability for us to be more flexible in how we are thinking about tax administration,” she said.

Inland Revenue says it’s in talks with foreign tax departments including the UK’s HM Revenue & Customs as it steps up efforts to recover money owed by overseas-based student loan borrowers.

Kiwis living overseas accounted for more than 90 per cent of the $1.07 billion in overdue repayments to the Student Loan Scheme as at June 30.

Some $15.34b is owed under the scheme by 731,754 borrowers, of which overseas borrowers owe 21 per cent, or $3.24b by 110,739.

Earlier this month, IRD said an information exchange agreement with the Australian Tax Office (ATO) had identified 10,400 student loan borrowers living across the Tasman, and it would contact them about repaying their loans.

Hinds YF shows good early form Hinds may have a new agricultural hero if dark horse Cameron Black makes good on early form when he competes at the Aorangi regional final for the FMG Young Farmer of the Year.

The 23-year-old Ashburton BNZ rural bank manager and Hinds Young Farmer member took out the Mid Canterbury District Contest and Skills Day, held at Mt Somers Station in the weekend.

He, along with second place winner David Wards and third placegetter James Gunson will represent Mid Canterbury at the Aorangi Regional Final on February 25 at Methven.

And if his early form is anything to go by he may be very hard to beat particularly with his previous experience competing in two regional finals in the Taranaki/ Manawatu region.

A graduate of Massey University with a Bachelor in Agri-Science, Black is from Western Southland where his parents still farm a sheep and beef property.

Having grown up in Southland with the province’s proud history in the FMG Young Farmer of the Year, he has always wanted to win the title.

“I always remember watching it on television. I grew up in the great Southland era when Richard Slee, Robert Kempthorne and Simon Hopcroft won the title.”

Currently the chairman of the Hinds club and vice chairman of the Aorangi region, Black is also a passionate waterskier and plays rugby for Southern.

He is planning to study hard before the regional as he knows Aorangi is the toughest region to compete in with six grand final winners hailing from the region since 2002. “I’m a wee bit nervous, but I’m excited as well.”

Nineteen-year-old David Wards

may be young, but the second placegetter proved he could also be an unknown quantity.

The Methven Young Farmer works on a sheep and cropping farm and entered his first district contest so that he could beat his sister Hayley.

Originally from the King Country, Wards is also known on the

competitive shearing circuit and recently made the Ellesmere A&P Show finals. He is also part of the Ashburton Pipe Band where he plays the bagpipes.

Foothills Young Farmer James Gunson rounds out the top three.

The seven winners of the regional finals will go on to the grand final in Manawatu next July.

Irrigate only when necessary Mid Canterbury farmers are being reminded to only turn their irrigators on when necessary as ongoing wet and relatively cold temperatures in many parts of the region reduce the need for early season irrigation.

Groundwater levels are very low across the district after three successive winters with very low recharge.

IrrigationNZ chief executive Andrew Curtis said farmers should be factoring rain that has fallen into their soil moisture calculations to avoid irrigating when they didn’t need to.

A few farmers had been spotted irrigating on days when it was obvious water wasn’t required, he said.

Environment Canterbury says groundwater consents tied to adaptive management conditions in the Valetta-Ashburton River zones would have very poor reliability over summer. The conditions mean they can’t abstract when levels are low.

Surface water irrigation would also be subject to conditions.

ECan said some abstractors would have difficulties with wells drying up or supplying low volumes.

Curtin said he had been excited by the number of irrigators that had only just started up, saying it showed more people

were recording rainfall, measuring soil moisture and paying attention to weather forecasts.

“However, there’s still a handful of irrigators going on days when it’s obvious water application isn’t required – we need to get everyone scheduling their irrigation well.

“Farmers need to record the sporadic rainfall we’ve been experiencing and monitor their soil moisture levels closely.

Keeping a check on any predicted rainfall is also key. Not irrigating until you need to reduces operational costs and increases profitability.”

Curtis said understanding soil’s water holding capacity and plant water use was critical to irrigation scheduling. “During September plant water use averaged 2mm per day and during October this crept up to 3mm. As we’re still waiting for the nor’westers to kick in, plant water use is quite low for the time of year.”

IrrigationNZ helps irrigators understand how to schedule irrigation using education and technology.

Although groundwater levels are low when compared to previous September levels, a little more than half of the wells we monitor recorded slightly higher water levels in September than in August.

More than 100 year four students competed Tuesday night in the year four miniball tournament.

The 16 teams from around Ashburton played against each other at the Oxford Street Stadium.

The Tinwald Terminators against the Hampstead Rebels started the evening at 3.30pm and the night was finished at 7pm

by Chertsey against the Netherby Warriors.

Year four miniball tournament volunteer Rachel Arnold said they had teams from around Ashburton competing which included Methven and Mayfield.

She said the kids loved to play miniball and they did not compete for a trophy, purely for fun.

“They all enjoy it.”

Jarvis stripped of club presidency New Zealand motorsport identity Ted Jarvis is being dismissed as the president of the Auckland Car Club after he was filmed kicking and pushing over a photographer at the weekend’s Supercars Championship.

Club spokesman and acting president Brett Davy confirmed yesterday the club had agreed to remove Jarvis as president, and were following steps to do so.

Australian motorsport photographer Dirk Klynsmith was left lying prone after he was kicked and pushed into a concreted grass verge by Jarvis, who is also the founder of a charity set up to help disadvantaged youth.

The photographer is shown falling back, his head hitting his equipment.

The incident, which happened off course at the V8 Supercars Championship at Pukekohe, was captured on film.

Following the assault, the Auckland Car Club distanced itself from the incident on Facebook.

“The Auckland Car Club executive committee have been made aware of the situation late last night and we are meeting

in urgency to deal with the incident.

“Although we have no formal details at this stage and have not yet spoken with Mr Jarvis the committee would like it to be known that we absolutely do not condone any kind of violence and we hope Mr Klynsmith is okay and apologise to him over this very regrettable incident.

“We would like it to be known that Mr Jarvis was not representing the car club in any formal capacity over the supercar weekend,” wrote club representative Neville Cooper in a post.

On Wednesday afternoon, Klynsmith, who is now back in Australia, said he was “on the improve”.

“I’ve still got a slight headache but my neck’s getting a little bit sore,” he said.

“The way I landed on my monopod, my head went back because my neck landed on it.

That’s actually sorer than it was.”

Klynsmith did not remember being knocked out, but a friend told him he was unconscious for 10-20 seconds.

Klynsmith has sent a statement to the police, and yesterday morning spoke to Davy.

“He rang me this morning and

had a very lengthy conversation, and he told me that they had a meeting, that they listened to his account of events, and that they removed him as president and that it was a unanimous decision.

“They apologised profusely for his actions, they were all mortified.”

Klynsmith was still struggling to understand the incident.

“It’s quite hard to come to grips that, you know, given his charity work, just how or why he behaved the way he did. I don’t understand it. But that said, you know, I suppose things happen, he might have had other thing on his mind, I don’t know.”

Klynsmith said he didn’t hold the Auckland Car Club responsible.

He was “astonished” by the response he had had from people “all over New Zealand”.

Strangers had been sending him messages and well wishes on Facebook and via text.

“I’m quite humbled by all the well wishing and all the comments that I’ve received from people that I just don’t know. It’s been quite astonishing.”

Jarvis has not responded to phone calls.

Australian GT series heads to Highlands 101 The cars and drivers of the Australian GT head to the picturesque Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell this weekend for an action-packed doubleheader with the CAMS Australian GT Championship and CAMS Australian Endurance Championships both set to go down to the wire.

Two championships will be decided around the 4.1-kilometre circuit, located 45 minutes from Queenstown, rounding out an incredible 2016 season. Highlands first appeared on the Australian GT calendar in 2013, with the 2016 edition the first time

the popular Highlands 101 will be counted as a championship event.

Highlands and Hampton Downs owner, Tony Quinn has twice won the event, co-driving with Fabian Coulthard in 2013 and Garth Tander in 2014, before his son Klark Quinn won last year’s race alongside local ace Shane Van Gisbergen.

This year another New Zealand star will step alongside Klark Quinn, with ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett set to make his second circuit racing appearance. The drifting star had his first outing at Hampton Downs, proving his versatility

and skill behind the wheel with a superb performance that saw the Darrell Lea car make the Top 10 Shootout on Saturday afternoon.

The Highlands 101 will run on Sunday, starting with a unique Le Mans start which will see drivers begin the event with a foot race to their cars. It’s part of the unique spectacle of the Highlands 101 and has proved a popular prelude to the commencement of the on-track competition.

The Highlands 101 follows Saturday’s two Australian GT Championship events which will round out a year that started on the streets of Adelaide in March.

Since then the championship has travelled across the breadth of Australia, with nine different winners in the thirteen races so far in 2016.

Just two races remain and with the championship battle delicately balanced between Klark Quinn, Nathan Morcom and Roger Lago it’s a tussle that looks set to go to the very last lap of the very last race of 2016.

Former two-time champ Klark Quinn, currently heads the Australian GT Championship in the McLaren 650S, holding a slender points advantage over Nathan Morcom. The duo have battled it

out all season, while Roger Lago also remains in the title hunt in his Lamborghini R-EX. Lago comes fresh from success at the inaugural Hampton Downs 101, where he won the third round of the Australian Endurance Championship in spectacular style with co-driver David Russell.

With Russell at the wheel, a late race pass on the Ferrari 458 GT3 of Graeme Smyth saw them take the flag, making the Lamborghini duo the third different winners in as many Australian Endurance Championship events.

Speaking from his Las Vegas base alongside Kevin Barry, his mentor and trainer, yesterday, Parker said he was facing another 50 rounds of sparring before his team arrive in Auckland on November 25 for the fight at Vector Arena on December 10.

Parker said he expects Ruiz Jr, whom he met by chance in Las Vegas recently, to be in similarly good shape. Ruiz Jr, who has carried a lot of weight in the past, but has remained undefeated as a professional, has probably lost nearly 20kg in training, he said.

Australia’s greatest spinner Shane Warne has joined an ever-growing list of contenders to coach the national side in an upcoming home Twenty20 series.

Cricket Australia (CA) is searching for a caretaker coach for three T20 clashes with Sri Lanka in February, when Darren Lehmann and the nation’s best players will be in India preparing for a four-Test series.

In brief AFL clubs fined Hawthorn were among seven AFL clubs slapped with fines by the league yesterday for failing to keep player information up to date.

Clubs are required to keep the AFL updated on the whereabouts of their players at all times so that they can be subjected to random drug tests conducted by ASADA. The Hawks were the worst offenders, sanctioned $7500 in total for three breaches, West Coast and Geelong were sanctioned $5000 for two breaches and Collingwood, Essendon, the Western Bulldogs and St Kilda were each fined $2500 for one breach apiece.

Drug use ‘everywhere’ Former rugby league international Jason Donnelly says “cocaine is everywhere after grand finals”.

Cronulla fullback Ben Barba’s career is once again at a crossroads, with the former Dally M Medallist released by the Sharks this week after testing positive to cocaine four days after the Sharks’ NRL grand final triumph over Melbourne.

Donnelly, a member of St George’s back-to-back grand final squads in 1992-93, says, speaking from experience, cocaine tends to be rife around celebrations of the game’s biggest day.

“Cocaine is everywhere after grand finals,” he told AAP. “I’m

not casting judgement ... it’s just reality. Why do you think the NRL tests for recreational drugs?”

Donnelly’s claims might ruffle feathers but he insists little has changed in the professional era since his playing days of more than 20 years ago.

He says some footballers are happy to run the risk of being tested while on a high - natural or otherwise - after completing a gruelling season in the ultimate fashion.

“Society is society and back when I was playing you knew it would get out of your system in 48 hours,” he said. “That’s what all the breaking your back for all year is: to have just maybe one

night where you’d party all night and let your hair down.”

A former New Zealand junior decathlon champion who once trained under Daley Thompson in Britain, Donnelly is adamant he never engaged in recreational drugs - but he saw it first hand.

“I was too focused, obsessed, growing up on being an athlete.

I wanted to go to the Olympics,” he said. “The first time I was involved in a grand final, I was a bit overawed. I was only 21 and had come over from New Zealand.

So then after the grand final, to see all the cocaine use was a bit of a surprise.”

Donnelly, a nuggety powerhouse and one of coach Brian Smith’s trailblazing metre-eat-

ing wingers, also cast doubt on the consistency of drug testing.

“There’s no way that drug testing is random,” he said. “I was targeted because of my size to height but never failed any of the six or so tests I ever had. But I know teammates who were never tested.

“Ben Barba’s 12-match suspension is what he deserves but I think it (party drug use) is rife.”

Hardaker ends NRL stint Englishman Zak Hardaker’s stint in the NRL is officially over, with the fullback signing with Super League club Castleford on a one-year loan deal. Thomas Leuluai eyes coaching career after playing days Thomas Leuluai loves his sport so much he might never leave.

The 31-year-old utility has set his sights on becoming a coach when he eventually hangs up his boots. That might not be for a few years – Leuluai remains at the top of his game – but he will start some coaching work next year at Wigan.

“It’s part of the reason for coming back [to England],” said Leuluai. “It’s about having a role after footy. As you get older, you look to the future and you get to a point where you need to look after yourself.

“Coaching will be a path that I will go into. I don’t know if I will be coaching young guys or help-

ing out, but there will definitely be something along those lines.”

It appeals to Leuluai as a new challenge for an old dog, and a chance to remain in the game that saw him join the Warriors as a 17-year-old in 2002.

“I enjoy the environment, enjoy being around the boys and I have done it for so long,” said Leuluai. “I understand the game pretty well. When you have done something for so long and you enjoy it still ... it’s sort of a natural progression.”

At first glance, Leuluai has the raw materials to succeed: immense knowledge, wide experience, high respect and a good communicator. He would also

be a welcome addition to the ranks of recent former Kiwis coaching, which includes Stephen Kearney, David Kidwell, Willie Poching and Stacey Jones.

But that’s all in the future.

Much closer on the horizon is Saturday morning’s challenge against Scotland in Workington, which the Kiwis have to win (preferably convincingly) to stay on track for the Four Nations final.

“We need to show them respect – that is something that Kiddy has talked about – and show respect to the Kiwis jumper, regardless of who you are playing against,” said Leuluai. “I know [Scotland] will be passion-

ate, I know they got off to a good start last weekend and really put [England under pressure].”

The Kiwis currently trail England by 30 on points differential, leading to most suggesting the Kiwis need to target a heavy victory, an idea that Leuluai rejects.

“You don’t focus on that,” he said. “That’s the trap. The trap is going out there and trying to overplay. You just have to play.

The result will take care of itself. It always does. If we turn up with the right attitude and play well enough, we will get what we deserve. Whether that is enough points to get through or whatever, we can’t control that. We need to focus on playing well.

If you look too far into the future about the points or what score you need to get to, it can be tricky.”

Once the tournament is over Leuluai, who is on a one-way ticket from New Zealand, will return to Wigan, the club which he enjoyed such success with between 2007 and 2012.

“I’m looking forward to it and it’s a new challenge,” said Leuluai. “I was sad to leave the Warriors but excited to go back to a club that I have a lot of respect for. Wigan have great fans [and] I know how much they expect results-wise. I’m looking forward to playing in big games, if we can make it.”

‘On verge of extinction’ Female cricketers are “a species on the verge of extinction” according to a damning report into the state of the women’s game released yesterday.

The independent report, which was commissioned by New Zealand Cricket last year in an effort to understand why women don’t engage with game, paints a grim picture on the current state of the relationship between cricket and women.

A document, called the Women and Cricket Report overseen by former Auckland player, and strategic governance advisor, Sarah Beaman, was released today and has a wide range of recommendations for NZC to consider.

At a time when money is pouring into Australian women’s cricket as its profile grows rap-

idly, the report argues NZC will not be able to effectively engage with women unless, and until, there are more women in governance and management roles at all levels of the sport.

“What I discovered was women having virtually no voice in the governance or leadership of cricket, few women coaching or umpiring, and female players a species on the verge of extinction,” Beaman wrote in her report.

“I found it ironic that the 1992 amalgamation of the New Zealand Women’s Cricket Council with New Zealand Cricket was considered trailblazing: a model for the rest of the world. But the buzz quickly faded: women’s cricket, which had been run by women for 58 years, was soon run mostly by men.”

The percentage of women in national governance roles in cricket has dropped from 38 to 14 per cent since the disestablishment of the New Zealand Women’s Cricket Council.

Those interviewed for the report also pointed to a belief that cricket for females became relegated to an obligation and a costs centre with no apparent return on investment and that females are not recognised for what they can contribute.

The report also found only 10 per cent of those participating in cricket today are female, and 90 per cent of them are under the age of 12, with women’s programmes treated as an afterthought.

The study began last November and solutions will be worked through in the next six months.

It included conducting hourlong interviews with 129 people inside and outside cricket; 503 women from outside cricket, 60 former internationals, men and women, 29 current internationals and 49 at under 21 level, and women players of India, Pacific Island, Maori and other ethnicities.

“We need to put up our hand here and accept responsibility,” read a statement from NZC. “We have allowed women’s cricket to be run by men for women; we have neglected the women’s game on the basis of cost, and a perceived lack of interest.

“We have side-lined women’s cricket both structurally and philosophically. We were wrong, and we now need to address the areas we’ve allowed to slip.”

Expect Canterbury leg spinner Todd Astle to return to the New Zealand test cricket team when the 13-man squad for the Pakistan series is announced tomorrow.

Astle’s likely to edge out Ish Sodhi after incumbent spinner Mitchell Santner fractured his wrist batting in the nets last week.

A leg spinner appears preferable to take the ball away from Pakistan’s right-handers.

They used five in their top six against the West Indies.

Astle earned his maiden test cap almost four years ago in the win against Sri Lanka at Colombo.

His resume this season is strong with 14 first-class wickets from three matches at 18.07.

Astle is still listed to play for New Zealand ‘A’ against Pakistan in Nelson on Friday.

Sodhi has a well-disguised googly, but can be expensive. He took three for 149 at 4.26 runs per over against India in Kanpur, but responded with seven for 105 in Northern Districts’ 21-run win against Canterbury this week.

Jeetan Patel is playing for Wellington and was used in India when Mark Craig got injured, but the 36-year-old and his wife are expecting their second child soon.

Auckland opener Jeet Raval is a candidate to debut, but that remains a point of intrigue after Martin Guptill’s 56 and 128 not out for Auckland against Wellington in the third round of Plunket Shield. Raval made 84 and 19 in the same match, and averages 40.66 from six innings this season.

He has been consistent across several seasons and was taken on the African tour.

However, the 28-year-old lefthander has struggled against spin.

Henry Nicholls and Luke Ronchi are likely to duel for the No.5 spot, and Tim Southee and Matt Henry should contest for the right-arm pace berth, joining Trent Boult and Neil Wagner in the attack.

SHIERLAW, Graham (Donald Graham) – On Saturday, November 5, Graham left us to be with his Lord. He was one very exceptional man. Most dearly loved husband of Sue, he was her whole life. Deeply loved by Leigh-Anne, Philippa, Lyn, Tony, Roger, Sam, his grandchildren and all his family. He was a unique and wonderful man who we were blessed to have. Eternal thanks to all the staff at Te Omanga Hospice and Wellington Hospital cancer/blood North 5.

Sport Fallon ruled out Striker Rory Fallon has been ruled out of the All Whites’ World Cup qualifiers against New Caledonia because of a family bereavement.

The 34-year-old, who is looking to help the team qualify for his second World Cup, will miss the team’s home game against New Caledonia on November 12 at QBE Stadium and the away leg on November 15 in Kone. All Whites coach Anthony Hudson said the team felt for Fallon and his family.

“It is obviously not the news you ever want to hear for a member of the team, so our thoughts go out to Rory and the Fallon family,” Hudson said.

A crack at scholarship

A year’s work was all it took for an Ashburton rally car driver to get a shot at greatness.

Rally car driver Job Quantock has been selected along with four others to compete for the Hyundai New Zealand Young Drivers Shootout and Scholarship.

Quantock was originally from Anama in the Mt Somers area, but now resides in Ohoka.

The scholarship was developed by world rally champion Hayden Paddon with Hyundai New Zealand.

Job Quantock excited about the selection and it was a big step up.

He said his family had been

involved in rallying for a long time but he has only had one full season of driving a rally car.

The 22-year-old was selected alongside Max Bayley, Hawke’s Bay, Sloan Cox, Rotorua, Matt Summerfield, Rangiora and Dylan Thomson from Waiuku.

Quantock said his ultimate goal is to follow in Paddon’s footsteps and become a world champion, but for the mean time he’s focusing on winning a national title.

He said they practice by participating in as many races and sprints they can, which will probably work out to be

around six, but depends on how far someone is willing to travel.

However, it’s hard to get full rally experience as there is not a large section of closed roads a rally driver can use, he said.

Whoever wins the scholarship will be given the opportunity to drive the Hyundai NZ AP4 i20 rally car run by Paddon Rallysport.

They will also get to participate in two rounds of the 2017 New Zealand Rally Championship, do some testing and training with Paddon and have potential opportunities for further development in 2018.

Maori All Blacks gear up for Munster clash History and passion always figure highly when the conversations switches to Munster rugby.

Stanning retires British double Olympic champion Heather Stanning has announced her retirement from rowing. The 31-year-old won gold in the women’s pair with Helen Glover at London 2012 and Rio 2016 as part of an unbeaten record going back to 2011.

Stanning, who will continue serving in the British Army, said: “It’s hard to identify a key highlight. Obviously winning back-to-back Olympic golds is up there, but also our first World Championship gold was a big highlight.”

Proctor off to Titans The Gold Coast have wasted no time in finding their replacement for Greg Bird, signing Melbourne second-rower Kevin Proctor to a four-year NRL deal. The New Zealand representative will remain with the Titans until at least the end of the 2020 NRL season, after being released from the final two years of his contract with the Storm.
