Kim Miller has qualified as a registered methamphetamine tester and said people would be surprised at the range of properties that are now testing positive for contamination.

It’s not just houses in rough neighbourhoods, it could be the house next door, she said.

Testing is still not common in Ashburton, but she says in parts of New Zealand it is becoming almost standard practice.

The need to run checks was particularly important for someone buying a property that had been rented for a number of years, Mrs Miller said.

Running a meth check on a property was about keeping people safe and the service was available to anyone, not just clients of her employer, Ray White, Mrs Miller said.

“People should talk to their real estate agent about what’s best, they’re trained to do this, to give the right advice. And there will be houses in Ashburton that people are just not aware of.”

Over the past year six out of 186 Ashburton Housing New Zealand properties have been tested for methamphetamine contamination.

Four have returned negative results, but two have needed decontamination.

A man who has been in and out of prison since he was 15 is holding a solo art exhibition in Whangarei – although his parole conditions may prevent him attending his own show. Simon Allan Kerr, who founded the bank-robbing Hole in the Wall Gang, has more than 160 convictions and a criminal history spanning 35 years. But, he says he has finally turned his life around thanks in part to his love of painting – discovered during his most recent spell in prison.

The aptly named Roads to Redemption exhibition, showing from November 22 at Whangarei Art Museum, takes the audience on a journey through Mr Kerr’s life, from his dysfunctional childhood to his criminal life, prison escapes and subsequent self-reflection. “I am literally a casualty of my own actions,” Mr Kerr said. “I am messy because of that fact. But in saying that, I am mindful that I am also a response to a childhood that had its own realities that were out of my control. I’m messy because of that too.”

It had been 60 years since Prince Charles had seen his former nanny – but the pair were reunited in a chance encounter at the weekend. The meeting between the future king and the woman who looked after him as a baby, 92-year-old Jacqui Botting, took place in Nelson on Saturday. New Zealand-born Mrs Botting looked after Charles and his sister Anne in the early 1950s before returning home. She now lives in a Nelson retirement home opposite the research centre Prince Charles visited. And his nanny was waiting outside for a chance to see him after his visit. After being alerted to her presence, Prince Charles took the time to talk with her.

Winfrey stuck up for the Kardashians who recently came under fire from Wilson. The Aussie comedic actress pointed out that Kim Kardashian only got famous because of a sex tape, said the family’s reality show is superficial and that she is “totally against” what the family stands for. Winfrey told KissFM’s Kyle and Jackie O show yesterday that the Kardashians are basically workaholics. The former talk show queen said when she visited their home for a sevenhour interview the reality show cameras stayed rolling for another seven hours. “To really create a reality series that looks like something is actually happening, you have to be on all the time,” Winfrey said. “I went to film them as a family. I couldn’t believe how hard they work. So I disagree that they don’t do work. They have become their own iconic phemon, in this country and abroad and you don’t get that by not doing some work.”

An Auckland woman is on the hunt for Sugarfoot – a white miniature horse which was sold to someone in Tauranga. Cilla Reeves bought Sonny, a white appaloosa miniature horse, from a farm in Northland after seeing him chained to a fence for three years. The farm went up for sale and when she saw, she drove straight in and purchased the little horse on the spot. “I rescued him, the horse was totally neglected. He was tied to a post ...” Ms Reeves said. “I just fell in love with him straight away and we bonded really strongly ... It would just be so good to know he was safe and sound now.” The 65-yearold had to re-sell the horse two years ago after she had to start taking fulltime care of her elderly mother. Ms Reeves said she had been trying to track down the horse ever since. “It’s like losing a child. It’s not so bad when you sell a horse and you know where he goes.”

Scrappies in survival mode

For years people have made a business out of other people’s junk, but that’s changed the price of steel internationally, and it’s hit new lows.

Scrap metal dealers around New Zealand are facing a tough future with prices at an all-time low and showing no sign of lifting, and that, says Metalcorp manager Korina Kirk, means many dealers could be facing a grim future.

“It’s the intensity of this downturn. Usually prices drop and the recovery is quick. This one is unique because it is so prolonged. There was a similar drop in 2008 and there were redundancies but that drop was sharp,

this time it’s a prolonged decline,” she said.

Dealers were still generating some income from higher grade metal, Ms Kirk said.

“Lower grade metal such as steel wire and tin cans are not worth paying for now. It’s not quite getting to the point where it’s costing us to stay in business – yet.”

Most dealers would continue to take scrap as some could be recycled, but it was getting to the point where they might offer the recycling service but would be unable to pay for scrap, she said.

“This is the worst I’ve ever seen it. I was talking with someone in the States today and they said it’s pretty much the worst since 1934 for our industry.”

The question many were asking now was how long people could hold on, Ms Kirk said.

While yards were still accepting scrap, many had stopped sending trucks out long distances to pick up material, she said.

“Realistically I expect there’ll be no great improvement before February or March; it’ll be tough to get through the Christmas period.”

Customers might get very little, if anything, for the scrap metal, but it was important they still brought material in, Ms Kirk said.

“When prices go down it’s a double-edged sword. People don’t want to sell because the prices are so low but we need the supplies to keep ticking our

business over, we need product to keep coming in. We appreciate they want more for their scrap.

“People are finding it tough out there in their yards. I haven’t heard a lot about redundancies but I’ve heard whisperings,” she said.

Between her Christchurch and Ashburton yards Ms Kirk has a staff of 42.

“And we’re just part of the bigger picture in New Zealand and we’ve been in business for 26 years so we’re not fly-by-nighters.

“We’re trying not to talk doom and gloom, it’s a bad time, but we are a cyclic industry. What we have is a commodity, but it’s a commodity there’s very little market for at the moment. This is survival time for us.”

Students in the thick of examinations

High school students around the country are studying hard for their NCEA and Scholarship exams which began on Friday with Scholarship Drama.

More than 40,000 students sat their first major exam, NCEA Level 1 Mathematics, yesterday

morning. Sixteen-year-old Ashburton College student Alyce Lysaght, who came out of the exam at 12.30pm, said it went well but was pleased it was over.

Jialin Guo, also 16, said he had studied a lot but found the exam harder than the mock school exams.

ordinator Mary Buckland said the exams at the school had been going smoothly, however, she had already had two students who could not take some of their exams.

About 145,000 students will participate in this year’s exams with the largest, Level 1 English, being sat by 48,700 students and

the smallest, Scholarship Latin, just 27.

NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship exams run from Friday, November 6 to Friday, December 4.

A team of nearly 2000 will mark all papers by Christmas, with results expected to be released online from mid-January.

A man is facing several charges following an incident at the Tautuku Lodge in the Catlins, which involved armed police overnight on Sunday.

The 20-year-old was due to appear in the Dunedin District Court today and has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful discharge of a firearm and burglary.

As the matter was now before the courts, police said they could not make any further comment.

Police were called about 6pm on Sunday after reports that a male and a female in possession of a firearm had entered the empty Tautuku Lodge in South Otago.

The police armed offenders squad and a dog team were deployed and a convoy of police vehicles, accompanied by an ambulance, headed to the area from Dunedin at high speed.

Police last night declined to give further details because of operational reasons, and would not say whether the callout involved a domestic incident, or if a hostage was involved, and said there was no car chase.

House meth tests on the rise From P1 The organisation has a zero tolerance approach to use or manufacture of methamphetamine in any of its properties, a spokesperson said.

All frontline staff were trained to recognise signs of possible methamphetamine manufacture and use and how to deal with tenants who may have been affected by methamphetamine. They are also trained in conflict management should awkward situations arise.

“Where we suspect one of our properties may be contaminated with methamphetamine, the property will always be tested and remediated as necessary and we take a careful, deliberate approach to any contaminated property.”

Once a property is remediated, it is thoroughly tested before it is re-tenanted, the spokesperson said.

“This is clearly communicated to all of our tenants. If a tenant is found to have consumed or produced methamphetamine in our property, we respond swiftly by moving them out and we will also suspend them from applying for another Housing New Zealand house for one year.”

Tenants pay costs for damages, cleaning and decontamination which can take up to three months.

Multi-agency initiative starts

A multi-agency community safety initiative developed by the Ashburton District Council kicked-off last weekend.

Earlier this year Mayor Angus McKay organised a number of groups to come up with plans to curb late night violence and anti-social behaviour on Ashburton’s streets.

The groups included a local security company, Safer Ashbur-

ton, Maori Wardens, Ashburton Town Watch, a taxi company and police.

Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said the agencies had many meetings before they worked together for the first time on Saturday night.

It turned out to be a quiet night with not many people about but it was a good chance for them to practice before it started getting really busy, he said.

The initiative had been set up

as a direct response to problems caused by intoxicated people last summer, he said.

Part of the co-ordinated effort would be putting systems in place to get drunk people home safely so they did not have the opportunity to cause damage.

“It will mean less work for us and less work for everyone else.”

The agencies would be out and about every Saturday night during the busier summer months.

ager Kevin Clifford said they had been fully supportive of the initiative and were happy to work in partnership with the other organisations.

“It’s a good thing. We’re happy to be part of a combined approach to make our community safer.”

While they had always worked together this would be a more formal collaborative approach to target hot spot areas in the community, he said.

New manager appointed to health services

A new face is now at the helm of Ashburton’s Health Services.

Bernice Marra has been appointed by the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) to the new position of Ashburton Health Services Manager.

Ashburton and rural director of nursing Jan McClelland announced Ms Marra’s new role last week.

The manager will be pivotal in engaging with the community and the wider health system in order to plan for and develop an integrated health service strategy, Mrs McClelland said.

Having spent the last 10 years working in general management in the lower North Island Ms Marra has a wealth of experience with primary health organisations, the most recent being Compass Health Trust.

Over the last couple of years Ms Marra has worked with three North Island district health boards on their integration and service design work programmes.

Ms Marra will commence her role on Monday November 23rd and will be based at Ashburton Hospital.

The management of Ashburton Hospital experienced its first major overhaul when Ashburton and Rural Health Services general manager Garth Bateup retired last year after 32 years in the role.

Three new faces were then called to the forefront to replace him – Sue Sheerin the finance operations manager, Scott Wilson the medical services clinical director and Mrs McClelland.

These changes came as a result of the CDHB’s Proposal for Change which will see Ashburton moved out from under the umbrella of rural services.

As a result the proposal outlined changes at the hospital which include increasing the number of doctors, the replacement of six current positions with eight new roles and an upheaval of hospital management.

The proposal was approved by the board’s executive management team in September and CDHB chief medical officer Dr Nigel Millar said the changes were expected to not only enhance services but also ensure the hospital could educate and train the next generation of rural clinicians.

Red Cross centenary To commemorate 100 years of Red Cross two celebrations will take place today. A tree planting will take place at the Ashburton Domain at 1pm before a Red Cross display is unveiled at the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum. This coming weekend the St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Ashburton will also hold a church service to commemorate the centenary.

Visitor numbers at the EA Networks Centre continue to climb, hitting 29,270 during September.

There were 12 days during that month where visitor numbers exceeded 1000. Learn to swim numbers are also very high, with 1000 enrolments for term four.

The stadium attracted 87 bookings in September.

Vandalism costly Ratepayers were forced to pay almost $10,000 in September to repair damage caused around the Ashburton District by vandals.

The largest share of this money, $9427, was spent on repairing or replacing damaged road signs.

No takers for café Ashburton’s district councillors are scratching their heads over the future of a planned café in the district’s art and heritage centre.

It has tried several times to secure interest in running the café, but each time its efforts have yielded zero results. Councillors have now asked council staff to come up with options that would see a café in business in the complex.

Ambulance calls Ashburton’s St John Ambulance travelled 2956 kilometres last week, attending a total of 81 incidents. Forty-eight of these were to medical calls, 12 were to accidents.

Tongan art exhibition A Tongan exhibition will open to the public at the Ashburton Art Gallery tonight. Tonga ‘I Onopooni: Tonga Contemporary is the first exhibition to focus exclusively on the work of artists of Tongan heritage living in New Zealand.

It will open at 6pm in partnership with the Tongan families of Ashburton who will support it with a celebratory evening of traditional performance and food.

Communications officer Nicole Bourke said all were welcome to attend and “experience the wonderful diversity of the art”.

The exhibition includes sculpture, painting, tapa and more, is from Pataka Art+Museum in Porirua, and runs through to January 24.

Ashburton is one of only three venues in the South Island to host it.

Vandals make identification easy for police

Methven Community Pool vandals allegedly posted images of themselves at the scene of the crime on their Instagram pages.

This has made it easy for outraged volunteers at the pool to pass on some names to police, and police plan to talk to the group.

President Phil Duff said the pictures suggested that the group, which he understood was about five girls and boys aged 14 to 15, from the Methven area, had not only thrown items into the pool, but also went for a swim.

The pool was closed at the time, and the group would have climbed the high fence around it, leaving the entrance gate wide open as they left.

Items they threw in to the newly-filled pool on November 1 were empty paint trays, rollers and lids,

following the pool being recently painted.

The committee would be looking at its facility security system and may upgrade aspects such as lighting.

Methven Police senior constable Mike Seque said he had the names of three teenagers he would be talking to about the incident.

Meanwhile, the pool will open for the season this coming Saturday, and its heat pumps are raising the water temperature to up to 24 degrees. The facility’s hours on school days will be 3pm to 6pm, and 1pm to 6pm on nonschool days. Keyholders can swim outside of these hours, and keys are selling well, costing $120 for a family. Concession passes will also be for sale.

The pool is staffed by professional lifeguards for public swimming hours.

■ GLORIAVALE

Trust’s tax status still undecided

By Laura MiLLS Inland Revenue is still investigating the Gloriavale charitable trust, six months after the department announced it was looking into the charitable status.

The investigation was announced in March.

Gloriavale Christian Community owns assets totalling $36.6 million, including a dairy farm, deer enterprise, sphagnum moss processing plant and an aircraft repair firm.

The tax-exempt charity, operating as the Christian Church

Community Trust, is run by four church leaders and overseen by Hopeful Christian, who is referred to in documents as the “Overseeing Shepherd”.

Internal Affairs said last week in a statement Charities Services was investigating the Christian Church Community Trust to determine whether it remained eligible for registration as a charity.

The department noted decisions about charitable registration status were made by the independent Charities Registration Board.

If an organisation disagreed with a decision made by the

board, it could appeal to the High Court.

The Gloriavale trust’s annual returns for August 2013 through July 2014 show it is worth more than $36.6m and made a net profit of more than $1.86m in that year.

Green MP Catherine Delahunty, who visited the reclusive community at Lake Haupiri last week, said members confirmed to her they received Working for Families financial support from the Government.

IRD said it could not comment on individual cases.

Grass berms for footpaths

Ashburton homeowners might soon find themselves with a little more lawn to mow.

The Ashburton District Council has a new policy on footpath replacement that will see the town’s wide footpaths progressively given a grass berm treatment when they are reconstructed.

The council plans to seal the

kerb side of a footpath and lay ready lawn on the strip beside a property boundary.

First to receive the new combined surface treatment will be the footpath outside Ashburton Intermediate School.

The new treatment model wouldn’t be appropriate in every situation and it would not be used on narrower footpaths, council roading manager Brian Fauth said.

The grass berm treatment had already thrown up some interesting options, he said, with the intermediate school suggesting they could use their grass strip as a garden.

That, however, wasn’t the council’s intention, he said.

While people couldn’t dig up their grass berm and turn it into a garden, Mr Fauth said the grassed strip will give people greater freedom to allow trees

and plants to spill over their property boundaries onto grass rather than the footpath.

The new policy will apply to suburban streets only and may not always apply outside properties such as schools, churches or community owned facilities such as a fire station, he said.

Maintenance of the grass berm will be the responsibility of property owners. Trees will not be planted on the grass strips.

Hampstead pool closed to the public

It will be the end of an era at Hampstead swimming pool this year when it does not open to the public in school holidays.

A decline in key sales is being blamed for the decision, as patrons move on to other facilities such as EA Networks Centre and the upgraded Tinwald community pool.

The pool is owned and operated by Hampstead School, and is located in the school grounds and is primarily for the school’s swimming programmes. However, it has operated on a key system in out of school hours for decades, and about 30 years ago people could pay a one-off admission fee to swim there.

But the pool’s heyday is now well behind it as key sales have halved from about 80 five years ago, to just 40 last summer, and it is closing for the first time over the school holiday period.

School principal Peter Melrose said there would be a working bee at the pool on November 16, and the pool would open for school children at the end of December, then again in February when school went back.

“It doesn’t make sense to operate it for 40 pool keys being sold,” Mr Melrose said of not opening in the school holidays.

“We would much rather spend the money on the school kids.”

The pool cost about $12,000 per year to run, with only about

Murder charges Five people have appeared in court over the death of a Whanganui man who was assaulted on Sunday afternoon. Craig Campbell Rippon, 57, died in Whanganui Hospital on Sunday night after the assault on Rimu St. Three people appeared in Whanganui District Court yesterday charged with murder.

Two people have also appeared in Youth Court in relation to the matter. All five, who have name suppression, are due to appear again on November 30. Another man has been charged but is yet to appear.

The school had approached EA Networks Centre to see if it wanted to take on running the pool in the school holidays, but the offer was declined.

Meanwhile, other community pools in the district will remain open throughout the school holidays, although some are needing more volunteers.

President of the Rakaia Swim-

ming Club, Helena Dunlea, said the community facility was well used by families in the town.

Six people had turned up to the club’s annual general meeting last month, and there was enough to look after the pool throughout the summer.

However, more people would have to come on board in future in order to keep the facility running.

Alison King at the Hinds Community Swimming Pool said the committee had undertaken a working bee at the weekend,

where the pool was cleaned in preparation for painting.

“If we can get enough people to do it, hopefully it will be open in no time,” Mrs King said.

“Kind farmers” who donated cattle helped pay for the up to $6000 cost of running the facility.

Mt Somers Swimming Pool president Wendy Grigg said the pool was ready to open this coming weekend.

“We always need more volunteers but the small band of us who are doing it, are all doing a really good job,” Mrs Grigg said.

Hundreds of people crowded into the Ashburton Racecourse Lounge on Saturday night for the annual Diwali – Festival of Light.

More than 400 people attended the event which included a meal, entertainment and cultural clothing.

Ashburton Indian Multicultural Charitable Trust president Bikash Sukul said the crowd was bigger this year than it had ever been.

More than 70 per cent of the people were from Ashburton but the rest came from as far away as Waimate, Timaru and Christchurch, he said.

The festival had been drawing

larger numbers of people each year because people were starting to know what it was rather than relying on word of mouth, Mr Sukul said.

Also there was great entertainment and a meal for the $5 price of the ticket, he said. He hoped this would continue and it would be bigger and better next year.

The entertainment was varied with Indian, Filipino and Kiwi performances, he said.

“It was very multicultural.

“I think overall the programme was well-performed.”

Mr Sukal said he wanted to thank everyone for coming along and he was looking forward to another great celebration next year.

Two receptionists have lost their jobs at Maori Television because they cannot speak te reo Maori.

Maori Television chief executive Paora Maxwell confirmed two receptionists roles have been disestablished but would not say if those affected were offered any other positions. “Due to ongoing employment matters, Maori Television is unable to comment at this time on whether they were offered any other position,” Mr Maxwell said. “There has been an increase in language competency requirements for the two roles.”

He said new requirement for receptionists, which is being advertised, was the ability to speak both te reo Maori and English fluently.

Triple fatality One of the Mongrel Mob members killed in a crash on the way to the gang’s 50th anniversary celebrations at the weekend died on his late grandfather’s birthday.

Father of two TerryShane Stone, 31, died alongside two other Mongrel Mob members on Saturday after their car plunged down a bank into the Mohaka River in Hawkes Bay. The other men were Ronald Rigby, 53 and Nathan Isaac, 29. A fourth man survived and was discharged from hospital but has not been named. All four men were from Wairoa.

In brief Death toll up to 53 A Pakistani official says the death toll from the collapse of a factory building last week has risen to 53.

Jam Sajjad Hussain said rescuers have sifted through nearly all the debris from the collapse of a fourstorey building in the eastern city of Lahore. Rescuers have retrieved 100 living workers from the rubble, including a teenager whose family assumed he was dead. The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined.

Opposition wins

Australian officials are busy trying to contain unrest following a “major disturbance” at the Christmas Island detention centre.

Unrest at detention centre Australian officials were working to contain unrest at a remote detention centre for asylum seekers in the Indian Ocean, with protesters lighting a series of small fires and guards withdrawing from the compound.

The immigration department confirmed there was a “major disturbance” at the detention centre on the Australian territory of Christmas Island.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said one detainee caught up in the fray had requested medical assistance for an unspecified reason, but no serious injuries had been reported.

Refugee advocates say riots broke out following the death of an asylum seeker who escaped from the facility on Saturday.

The man’s body was found the

following day at the bottom of a cliff on the island. The cause of his death is under investigation.

The immigration department denied there was a large-scale riot, but said staff had withdrawn from the facility for safety reasons.

The department said the problem began when a small group of Iranian detainees staged a peaceful protest following the asylum seeker’s death. Other detainees then began damaging the property, including lighting several small fires.

Officials were negotiating with the detainees in a bid to end the standoff, Dutton told reporters.

He declined to elaborate on what the detainees wanted, and said he didn’t know how many people were involved in the protest.

The group leading the unrest appeared to be detainees who are being held at the facility due to their visas being cancelled — not asylum seekers, immigration officials said.

Australia last year strengthened the power it has to cancel visas, making it mandatory to do so if a person has been sentenced to at least a year in jail.

That has led to an influx of New Zealanders with criminal records – some of whom were long-term residents of Australia – ending up in immigration detention while they await deportation.

Some of them are appealing the government’s decision to revoke their visas.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said he was told there may be a few New Zealanders

involved in the unrest and if so, they’re doing nothing to help their case to stay in Australia.

“The risk is that they actually damage their own appeals because they undertake other criminal activity,” Key told reporters.

New Zealand lawmaker Kelvin Davis, who recently visited the island, said a New Zealander held at the facility told him that detainees had taken over the center.

“They have put holes in the walls, so even if they are rounded up and put back in the cells they actually can’t be locked up,” Davis told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

The immigration department said the perimeter was secure.

Suu Kyi party projects election landslide Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s party was confident it was headed for a landslide victory in Myanmar’s historic elections, as the democracy icon urged supporters not to provoke losing rivals who mostly represent the former junta that ruled this Southeast Asian nation for a half-century.

The opposition National League of Democracy had won about 70 per cent of the votes counted by midday yesterday, party spokesman Win Htein said.

The comments, if confirmed by official results, indicate that Suu Kyi’s party would not only dominate the Parliament but

could also secure the presidency despite handicaps built into the constitution.

“We will win a landslide,” Nyan Win, another party spokesman, said.

“I want Mother Suu to win in this election,” said Ma Khine, a street vendor, referring to the 70-year-old Suu Kyi with an affectionate term many here use.

“She has the skill to lead the country. I respect her so much.

I love her. She will change our country in a very good way.”

The government election commission was expected to start announcing final results last evening. The NLD has been widely

expected to finish with the largest number of seats in Parliament.

No matter the results, the election will not create a fully democratic Myanmar, which ended a half-century of military rule in 2011, followed by a quasi-civilian government run by a party made up of former military figures now expected to fare badly in the elections.

The constitution reserves 25 per cent of parliamentary seats for the military, and was rewritten to keep Suu Kyi from the presidency.

The amendment bars anyone with a foreign spouse or child

from holding the president’s and vice-presidents’ positions. Suu Kyi’s two sons are British, as was her late husband.

Suu Kyi, however, has said she will act as the country’s leader if the NLD wins the presidency, saying she will be “above the president”.

In her first comments after Sunday’s elections, Suu Kyi told a crowd gathered at the NLD party headquarters that while vote tabulations wouldn’t be announced until later, “I think you all have the idea of the results.”

“It is still a bit early to congratulate our candidates who will be the winners,” she said.

Croatia’s conservative opposition has won the Balkan country’s first parliamentary election since joining the European Union in 2013, but without enough votes to rule alone. The state electoral commission said yesterday that with 99 per cent of the vote counted, the conservatives, led by former intelligence chief Tomislav Karamarko, won 59 seats in the 151-seat parliament. The ruling Social Democrats, led by incumbent Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic, got 56 seats. The result means both blocs have failed to win an outright majority and the forming of the new government will depend on several small parties that entered parliament.

Airbus A321s ‘safe’ At the annual airshow in Dubai, Airbus officials say the company is confident in the safety of its A321 aircraft, including the plane that crashed in Egypt. Airbus Chief Operating Officer for Customers John Leahy told reporters he is “very confident in the A321’s safety record and the safety of the design.” Vice President of Communications at Airbus Stefan Schaffrath rejected suggestions the aircraft itself was faulty. The passenger jet, operated by Russia’s Metrojet, crashed on October 31, nearly 30 minutes after takeoff from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, heading to St. Petersburg.

Woman shot dead The Israeli military says guards have shot and killed a Palestinian woman who drew a knife as she attempted to attack them at a West Bank checkpoint. Defence Ministry spokeswoman Arielle Heffez says the woman ignored warning shots and calls to stop as she approached the checkpoint yesterday. The Israeli army says troops are looking for another person suspected of involvement in the attack but provided no details. Israeli media are reporting the woman allegedly left a suicide note.

Second train derails A Canadian Pacific Railway train derailed yesterday, spilling less than 3800 litres of crude oil and prompting evacuations in Wisconsin, the second day in a row a freight train derailed in the state.

Thirteen cars of an eastbound CP train went off the tracks around 2pm in Watertown, in the southeastern part of the state, the railroad said. One tank car was punctured and leaked oil. The company said the leaking car had been sealed, the spilled product was contained and had been siphoned off, and no product had reached a waterway.

O

n what level could it seem like a bit of harmless fun, performing sexually degrading acts on drunken girls and sharing photos of your debauchery online?

And yet that is what’s happening with increasing regularity. It was Roast Busters in 2013 and now it’s another group indulging in similar activities. They’re the ones who get caught. The same thing is occurring again and again around New Zealand, it’s just that the offenders haven’t been caught – yet.

Those boys are behaving like animals, they’re breaking the law, but they’re getting off with nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

What is that telling other young blokes who ply girls with drink, get tanked themselves, whip out their willies along with their phones and record their activities for the world to see?

It might all seem like good sport to the boys involved, but it speaks volumes about the types of individuals they’re in danger of becoming unless someone steps in and says “enough”.

For the young girls unwillingly involved, it’s a tragedy that could have lifelong consequences.

Those photos, shot at random and sent as an act of bravado, will be out there for public perusal for all time.

The only positive is those photos will also come back to haunt the boys involved at some time in the future – if there’s any justice in the world.

There are a lot of wrongs in what’s going on here. The boys are at best, guilty of sexual molestation, at worst, of rape; but what they’re doing is almost being condoned by law enforcers. A warning is consequence free, it’s forgotten in minutes Common-sense, however, has entered the issue through the Principals’ Association. They don’t want the offenders protected, they want police to take a tough line on abusive sexual behaviour. They want the kids to get rid of their attitude of entitlement and to understand that no-one is immune from prosecution.

Sexting might be seen as a joke, a bit of harmless fun. It’s not.

It’s degrading for everyone involved and it’s bullying by another name.

Pressing the send button without thinking could bring lifelong consequences, none of them pleasant.

YOUR VIEW Death of democracy How true the letter from Ed Eason, Guardian, November 3, re the death of democracy in Ashburton.

How can the citizens just sit back and allow this council to get away with cancelling our right to petition against decisions and rulings we do not agree with?

It beggars belief we are not all up in arms against this arrogant decision.

Good on the small band of councillors who opposed them.

We must remember who they are and vote accordingly at the ballot box.

May I also say, what an excellent and well-balanced view Sue Newman always delivers, especially about our education system.

The sooner we part company with Hekia Parata the better.

She has caused mayhem during her tenure as minister.

The big news that will impact on dairying

ecently there were several announcements that will impact on the dairy indus-

try.

First we heard from the Minister for Immigration Michael Woodhouse about introducing a waiver to those Filipino dairy farm workers who may have incorrectly exaggerated their experience, when applying for work visas.

That said, I don’t think embellished CVs are limited to Filipino dairy workers, it’s certainly not a nationality or industry specific practice.

While this is a pragmatic and common-sense decision, what wasn’t widely publicised, was the proposal to remove the roles of herd manager and assistant herd manager from the immediate skills shortage list (ISSL).

Currently for those two roles, you have to prove the migrant in question has the right qualifications and experience before they are granted entry.

You don’t, however, have to prove that a Kiwi was more suitable for the role.

Proving a suitable Kiwi is not available is required for any role that is not on Immigration NZ’s skills shortage lists.

To do that, you need to advertise the position in New Zealand

and then show Winz that those who applied for the job were unsuitable in some way or that no-one applied for the position.

Winz is then able to give approval for you to bring a migrant on to your farm.

Winz is now preparing to streamline this “workforce” test, which could help famers, but we are still to find out how streamlined and practical it is.

The reality is it can be a mission to attract staff out to live in the boonies. I’m not sure we truly have an abundance of suitable applicants in all the regions just yet.

Now the industry needs to do its bit to build on attracting and retaining staff. It’s possible there are Kiwis that are looking for farm work and with some help from the wider industry might become suitable.

We can’t just sit back and expect to be allowed to bring in

migrants year after year if we are doing nothing to improve the situation locally.

The Workplace Action Plan, Federated Farmers and DairyNZ have developed is one step in the right direction, but all these things take time, so we are not sure an immediate removal of these positions from the shortage list is correct at this time.

The other main dairy-related story from last week was the release of the Commerce Commission’s report on the state of competition in the dairy industry.

This report feeds into the review by MPI of the Dairy Industry Restructuring Act (DIRA), and all the various regulations that go with it.

Given I was working on farm all weekend I had no need of any insomnia cures, as sleep was very easy to come by. So I am yet to read all 150 pages of the report having just managed a skim read of the summary.

From that I certainly do have questions in regard of the outcomes of the report. One thing that grabbed my attention was the comment that we do not have strong enough competition at the factory gate.

I understand the theory behind the need for competition, however, as I found at university,

all these theories are based on several assumptions, the key one being that people and companies will act logically.

Logically in economic speak being you look to get a return for your investment or labour.

However, not all participants do act logically.

Some are state trading enterprises whose rationale is to secure food supplies for the state, because as the saying goes, “any country is only six meals away from revolution”.

If we look at the UK, I think it’s fair to say they have good factory gate competition for their milk, but it’s hard to find an English dairy farmer who is happy with the situation at the moment at the farm gate.

From what I can see their farmers are worse off due to the increased competition.

So it’s important we keep the eye on the prize and the fact is 95 per cent of what we produce is exported.

Let’s not tie ourselves in knots worrying about the 5 per cent set aside in the DIRA for these packaging enterprises to the detriment of the 95 per cent.

Positive financial result

Chairman Rob Hewett said it was a positive audited result, delivered in an environment with a number of constraints.

“However, whilst a significant improvement on 2014, we still have progress to make to achieve a return that reflects the amount of capital we have invested in the business over the course of a season,” he said.

The independent Grant Samuel report prepared for shareholders voting on the Shanghai Maling investment had forecast 2015 performance figures, including normalised ebit of $97 million, a slightly different measure from the ebitda figure Silver Fern reported yesterday.

The company reduced its net debt by $168 million to $121 million over the past year through being profitable, reducing inventory, selling non-core assets, and winding down its investment in a dairy bull beef scheme, Hewett said.

He has previously indicated the Shanghai Maling investment

Silver Fern Farms, the country’s largest meat exporter, has confirmed a positive 2015 financial result and further debt reduction as it progresses its planned 50/50 joint venture with China’s Shanghai Maling Aquarius.

The company achieved a 28 per cent improvement in earnings before interest, taxation and amortisation to $86.9 million for the year ending September on revenue of $2.45 billion, building on the turnaround achieved in the 2014 financial year.

Net profit after tax was $24.9 million, up from $500,000 the previous year.

Last month shareholders voted overwhelmingly to support the $261 million investment by Shanghai Maling, which is subject to regulatory approvals from the Overseas Investment Office and Chinese state authorities.

The OIO has indicated it could take six to nine months to process the application.

will leave Silver Fern Farms with the best balance sheet of any red meat company in New Zealand, carrying no debt and with a positive cash position by the end of next year, while holding funds it needs to update its plants and increase its value-add strategy.

Chief executive Dean Hamilton said the co-operative had achieved its goal of a material and substantial improvement in profitability and it was profitable across all species - beef, sheepmeat and venison.

“Beef and venison both had good results, and our big focus on turning around the performance of our sheepmeat busi-

ness is starting to achieve results - with a meaningful profit, the first one in four years.”

Year-end inventory was the lowest level for at least seven years, Hamilton said.

The company’s previous limited financial flexibility had made it difficult at times to respond to changing market conditions, and therefore livestock supply patterns from farmers, Hamilton said.

“We are confident that a combination of our improved financial performance and the new investment will provide us with more flexibility to respond to changes in the operating environment.”

Teams from both companies have been set up so the joint venture can hit the ground running if regulatory approval comes through next year.

Under the deal, Silver Fern Farms’s 6200 farmer shareholders will get a special dividend of $35 million, or 30 cents a share.

Superb season for kiwifruit producers

BY JAMIE GRAY Kiwifruit has continued its strong run with another bumper season, returning production to pre-Psa levels, Zespri chief operating officer Simon Limmer said.

The industry took a big hit from Psa after the virus cut a swathe through the gold variety - Hort16a - in 2010-11.

Thanks largely to introduction on the Psa-resistant variety, Gold3, the sector has staged a big comeback, bringing with it a sharp rebound in kiwifruit orchard prices.

“We have recovered from Psa, which of course is a pretty important milestone for us,” Limmer told the Herald.

“The new gold variety Gold3, marketed as Sungold, is performing well in the orchards and through the supply chain, but most importantly consumers are really enjoying it,” he said.

Zespri - a grower-funded organisation responsible for marketing the fruit to the world beyond Australia - dispatched its last reefer ship for the season from the Port of Tauranga yesterday, bound for Japan and China. It has chartered 60 reefers this season, up from 51 last season, as well as over 9000 refrigerated containers.

Limmer said the kiwifruit industry is back to pre-Psa levels and was set for strong growth, with gold volumes expected to double in the next four years.

“This season we’re forecasting volumes about 25 per cent up on the previous season and we’re looking at nearly $2 billion in sales,” he said.

China was once again a strong performer, with sales up about 40 per cent this season. Eight vessels have called to China this season, up from three last season.

The Gold3 crop this year came to 32 million trays - its biggest ever.

“All the signs are that it is going to be a really sound performance over the next couple of years,” he said.

Green kiwifruit had also put in a strong year, with per hectare yields rising to record levels.

Favourable weather has played a big part in the improved productivity, along with better management practices.

Methven shares jump Methven’s shares jumped to a fourmonth high after the NZX-listed tap and shower manufacturer reported a 20 per cent gain in six-month profit and announced a special dividend, reassuring investors that its strategy of developing and marketing new products is paying off. Methven said profit rose about 20 per cent to $3.4 million in the six months ended September 30, based on its old balance date, and it will pay a fully-imputed special dividend of 3 cents a share. Sales grew 7.8 per cent to $52.5 million.

New man at the helm Waikato dairy farmer Michael Spaans has been elected chairman of DairyNZ, replacing long-serving chairman and former Cabinet minister John Luxton, who retired last month. Spaans will serve an annual term as chairman, leading an eight-member board, made up of five farmer-elected and three independent directors, the farmerfunded industry group said.

Vector sells business Vector, New Zealand’s largest distributor of electricity and gas, said it had agreed to sell its gas business to utilities investor First State Funds for $952.5 million, resulting in a $167 million gain. The sale was the result of its strategic review.

Vector’s gas assets comprise gas transmission pipelines, and gas distribution networks outside of Auckland. Vector Gas is also a leading provider of unregulated pipeline management services and is the technical and system operator for the Maui Pipeline.

Canon buys Converga New Zealand Post Group has sold its wholly owned subsidiary Converga to Canon Australia for an undisclosed sum. Converga, which specialises in business process outsourcing with a focus on digital document solutions, employs 1300 staff and has offices in Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the US. NZ Post, which reported a 34 per cent increase in annual profit to $128 million, is in the second year of a five-year reset strategy in the face of declining mail volumes.

Profit was helped by a $46 million gain on the sale of its Australianbased company Couriers Please for A$95 million.

MARKET REPORT Dairy The region has had some useful rain which has kept pastures green, but it is not enough to influence the serious soil moisture deficit which has now widened to the province’s boundaries.

Pasture growth rates are predicted to be variable in the next fortnight with more seedhead activity appearing and quality dependent on previous pasture management.

Indications of how mating is progressing is now starting to be evident and managers will be tracking how their herd is building to the goal of 90 per cent submission rate in three weeks.

Nationally it appears more use is being made of terminal sires for late and poorer producing cows as many are trying to recover some value out of beef cross bobby calves.

Jersey breeders are heralding the achievement of getting more of their sires on the ranking of active sires’ list and believe their animals are better converters of feed to profit by producing 13 per cent more milksolids per hectare than other breeds.

The milk market fell again by over 7 per cent at auction last week and prices are now back to where they were two months ago, reinforcing the belief that there will be no quick turnaround this year.

Sensibly, officials have given Filipino dairy workers caught out under the immigration scam a reprieve, as the management implications of sending big numbers home would have caused serious disruption to the sector.

Lamb As the Christmas chilled export production comes to a close and processing returns to frozen, prices have dropped in response to poor global forequarter and leg demand.

There is little prospect of Chinese demand to help hold prices.

New Zealand’s major markets of the UK, China and the Middle East all show weak demand for frozen product and prospects look bleak for lamb producers over what could be a difficult summer feed-wise as well.

Forage brassicas are now being sown and will need early rains to produce good

volumes to meet the predicted summer deficit. The sheep numbers have fallen 4 per cent to 28.6 million in response to recent changes in land use and poor returns, but the lower numbers have stimulated mutton sales again into China.

In the saleyards hogget prices have fallen with more spring lambs appearing and the first numbers of stores were traded at Coalgate for $2.50-$2.80/kg lwt.

Wool The latest South Island wool auction saw less stylish finer merino fleece ease, but all other classes lifted in price. Mid micron, fine and coarse indicator prices, all recovered strongly from the recent easing of wool prices.

The currency, that nowadays seems strongly linked to the dairy, weakened after the auction and helped breathe life into a wool market that had seemed to run out of momentum.

Beef Volatility seems to have affected the US beef market with falling domestic values dragging down the imported beef prices and the rest of the year’s quota stock is hanging over the market.

The recent strong demand out of China has softened with supply increasing and with better numbers now being processed nationally, this extra supply has eased the market further.

The prime steer saleyard market has dropped significantly with prices now in the $2.80-$2.90c/kg lwt range when only weeks ago they were well over $3/kg lwt.

Store prices have fallen lower, but even in the North Island where feed supplies are stronger, some dairy weaner bulls are now selling back at last year’s rates.

Deer Processors are however positive for venison in the new season with demand reacting to the lower supply and returns should at least match last season’s levels, subject to a reasonable currency.

Price news from early velvet sales has been hard to source reflecting a cautious start to the season but fundamentals are still strong and prospects look positive.

Visa hold-ups frustrate farmer

Changing immigration rules, slow rural internet and a staff member down over the busiest time of the year has conspired to frustrate at least one Mid Canterbury dairy farmer.

The sharemilker, who we will call Bill in respect of his request to remain anonymous, hired a new staff member at the start of the season.

At the time he was unaware the Filipino national’s paperwork was not in order.

“He wasn’t caught up with faking qualifications for his visa, his paperwork was legal, but his visa hadn’t been transferred to enable him to work for me,” Bill said.

It has taken eight weeks to sort it out.

Bill admits he should have checked more thoroughly, but took matters in good faith.

“The visa states where they are meant to work. I’m still trying to learn the rules which seem to change all the time, but the workers are not allowed to start until they get the all clear. I thought if they had a 12-month visa they could work pretty much anywhere,” he said.

The glitch meant his new worker was hauled off the job right at the start of the calving season.

He advertised the job in line with government policy to place Kiwis in work ahead of foreigners.

But this too was fraught with complications.

come had to be done via emails and poor rural broadband conductivity meant the messages were not received.

“It took me so long to get hold of them to arrange a meeting to explain the problem.

“I finally got a number, but because I was in Canterbury, the call centre kept putting me through to the rebuild centre in Christchurch, which has nothing to do with dairy farming.

“When I advertised I got a response from a French national

(methamphetamine) addicts and an Irishman who just did a runner – didn’t turn up,” he said.

Employees may have a valid licence when they commence employment, but lose them on demerit points.

“We could lose our tractor for 28 days if that happens and they get caught, as part of the impounding process,” Bill said.

With an El Nino summer forecast, Mid Canterbury farmers are developing strategies to eke out precious irrigation water supplies.

With his wells already 25 per cent down on an average year, Ashburton Forks farmer David Clark has decided to sacrifice irrigating his cereal crops in favour of contracted ryegrass seed crops.

“The crop’s got a home to go to, whereas the wheat is going into the silo in the hope that some dairy farmer might want it,” Mr Clark told farmers at a grass seminar run by the Foundation for Ar-

able Research (FAR) recently.

He has already put the Cambridge roller over the barley with the intention of cutting it for silage if drought hits.

“Nobody seems to want barley anyway,” he said.

“Three years ago it was touch and go in terms of cost, but now cereal prices are down, so ryegrass is a better bet.

“We are pulling back on water – at the moment we do not have enough water to get us through to harvest. For the first time last autumn we had to shut a well down to maintain pressure.”

Dairy industry awards entries rolling in The new entry criteria in this year’s New Zealand Dairy Manager of the Year competition means dairy farm workers with a variety of backgrounds, experience and skills are able to enter.

Entries are now being accepted in the dairy manager competition, as well as the Share Farmer of the Year and the Dairy Trainee of the Year competitions.

ategies for lack of water ard Chynoweth said the “rule of thumb” for irrigating ryegrass was a millimetre of water for every centimetre of topsoil, but it was important not to allow the crop to become stressed.

Ryegrass can extract water to about a metre if the soil profile is right, but the crop will need water right through to harvest to maximise yield.

Over-watering should be avoided, to cut back on regrowth and lodging.

There is some flexibility in managing nitrogen application in ryegrass crops, but the timing of plant growth regulators (PGR) is

critical, Mr Chynoweth said.

PGRs are designed to reduce cereal height. They’re sprayed on crops during the growing season, just like herbicides or fungicides.

Treated plants are shorter, with stronger stems, for reduced lodging.

Ideally ryegrass plants should be kept down to about 70cm, to stop lodging.

“The key thing is keeping the crop standing until 20 days before harvest, what happens after that is not relevant,” Mr Chynoweth said.

“The crop needs to stand long enough to get the light into it for seed fill.”

However, too much light can result in an increase in undergrowth in the crop.

“You need about 1800 heads to the metre to stop light getting through to prevent vegetation growing underneath,” he said.

The unseasonable late frosts had worked in favour of ryegrass seed growers, resetting the rust clock and offsetting the need for early fungicide treatment, but farmers will need to keep watch from here on in.

“There was a lot of crown rust, but it’s looking more like a normal year for rust now,” Mr Chynoweth said.

Mrs Keeping says farm managers, assistant farm managers, senior herd managers, production managers, herd managers, and 2ICs could all be eligible to enter. To be eligible entrants need to be employed full-time on a dairy farm on an individual employment contract (not self-employed), and have no equity in the farm business.

“It’ll be really interesting for our judges as an entrant could be new to the industry – but have maturity and other work experiences – o r have been in the industry for some years.”

The Dairy Manager of the Year competition also allows for entrants to play to a particular strength in a Power Play section.

“The Power Play is worth 20 per cent and enables entrants to choose a topic from five options to present on. It recognises that some entrants may have a greater responsibility or strength in one aspect of the farm business as compared to others,” Mrs Keeping said.

Mrs Keeping says entry changes were made to all three competitions in the 2016 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards. All entries are being received online at www. dairyindustryawards.co.nz and close on November 30.

In July, 1980, the Hampstead Post Office was robbed at pistol point. $3000 was taken and shop owner Nola Owers, after being threatened with physical violence, was made to lie on the floor while the robber made his getaway.

Ham rice

Leftover 100% NZ ham bone 3 bay leaves 2 gloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped 1 medium onion, peeled and diced 4 whole cloves 4 peppercorns 1C red rice

■ Place the ham bone, bay leaves, garlic, onion, cloves and peppercorns in a large saucepan, cover with water and a lid.

■ Bring to the boil and simmer gently for 30 minutes.

■ Add the rice, replace lid and simmer for a further 30 minutes.

■ Remove the bone and drain the rice, reserving any broth.

■ Remove any ham from the bone, chop and stir into the rice.

■ Serve with the broth alongside.

Untapped stories in archives

A

s regular readers will be aware, the Ashburton Museum holds a very large collection of photographic images.

One of the tasks I gave myself when I arrived here was to scan as many of the positive images as I could. As part of that project I would add to the existing catalogue, information that could be of use to researchers.

This may mean adding keywords, such as ‘hats’, ‘car’, as well as any names that may be on the backs of the image.

Therefore, any name that was on a photo is now listed in our ever-growing database.

But many, many images are not named (while we moan bitterly that our ancestors didn’t do it for us, do we bother to name all the digital snaps we take?), or some names are vague or confusing.

Without the full story, an image that is quite interesting may easily be overlooked.

Such is the case of this photograph (above).

It is the Maronan Country Women’s Institute. On the back someone had named everyone present. They are: Mrs Sandrey, Mrs McQuilkin, Mrs Cockroft, Mrs Constable, Miss Stops, Mrs Deans, Mrs Austin, Miss Bacon (companion to Miss Stops), Mrs Curtis and Mrs Davis.

When I first catalogued it I questioned the spelling of Miss Stops (what an odd name) and pondered why she required a companion.

Given that the names weren’t laid out in a pattern I wasn’t even sure who the possibly needy Miss Stops was. Due to an inquiry recently, I reviewed the image and found out that this photo had quite a story to tell.

Miss Jerome Spencer, founder of the Country Women’s Institute in New Zealand, had requested the Government to assist in the formation of other groups throughout the country, but they refused. Undeterred, Miss Spencer set about raising funds to in-

vite voluntary organisers to come from England to encourage and assist in the formation of CWIs in certain areas of the country.

Agnes Stops was the woman chosen to canvass Canterbury.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Miss Stops visited New Zealand twice, once in 1928 (via Samoa), again in 1930, there also is reference of her again visiting in 1935.

Certainly many of our CWI branches here begin with a public meeting held with Miss Stops as speaker.

Apart from what I am sure were inspiring talks, Agnes brought along with her examples of what works could be produced with the

type of education the CWI was once well known for, such as rugs, needlework and arts and crafts.

Again, according to the newspaper, Miss Stops herself was a master of smocking, glove-making and coloured embroidery.

So what could have been ‘just’ a group of ladies from Maronan, turns out to be the foundation members of that group, along with a very active woman from Nottinghamshire and her companion and is therefore significant not only for the district but for the entire CWI organisation in New Zealand.

It just goes to show what untapped stories we have hidden away in our archives.

Workmanship with wood M

odels of Noah’s Ark have been available as toys for many years, but were especially popular in the mid1800s. For many they were simply a toy, but for others they were seen as a way of illustrating the story of the flood from the Bible.

There were two common types – the boat bottom ones, as seen here (left), and flat-bottom ones that made little pretence of actu-

ally being a boat.

This example from the museum collection is believed to have been made in the mid-20th Century by a teenager using his fretwork skills. It is likely to have been made from a kitset using a strong, light, heavily-grained wood.

Many were made from straw and the roof of this one has that appearance, but it is actually

strips of wood machined to look like straw.

The roof lifts off giving a storage space for the animals inside, rather than having a large door in the side as many other model arks did. The animals appear to have been made from thin strips of wood glued together before being cut out. This gives them a slight striped appearance and a rough feel.

Blackburn takes out Peach Cup

Ashburton has two chances of hoisting the New Zealand Trotting Cup aloft today, with drivers Ricky May and Gerard O’Reilly reckoning they could both be in with a winning chance.

For May, this year’s Cup will be a much lower key affair than the previous three events.

He won in both 2012 and 2013 with Terror to Love and finished fourth last year.

This time round he’ll be in the sulky behind the Nina and Greg Hope-trained Mossdale Conner, and will be chasing his eighth trotting cup win.

For May, New Zealand Cup day 2015 will be a very different experience to the past three years.

This time he won’t be carrying the huge pressure of so many winning expectations on his shoulders.

Each year for the past three he’s gone into the race driving the favourite, Terror to Love and each year the expectations of the crowd have been that he’ll do the job and win – again.

With Terror to Love now retired from racing, May will be driving six-year-old Mossdale Conner on his first cup outing.

And he knows it will be a different day out.

“The expectations won’t be there.

“He’s been going really well this year and if he finishes in the

The cup is like no other race, and it’s a race in which anything can happen, he said.

“They’re all pretty even this year and it’ll be the one that gets the best run.

“They’re all in with a chance.”

As he does every year before the race of the year, May was flat out on his Methven farm, walking

With 11 drives on his card today, he knows today will be frantic.

He’s not keen to talk winners but says he’s pinning his hopes on trotter Monbet in race six.

Anything else will be a bonus, he said.

His cup pick this year is Smolda from the powerful Purdon barn, but he’s not counting out fellow Ashburtonian O’Reilly and Tiger Tara.

May has had seven New Zealand Trotting Cup winning drives to date, with Inky Lord in 1989, Iraklis, 1997, Mainland Banner, 2005, Monkey King, 2009 and 2010 and Terror to Love, 2012, 2013.

Last year he and Terror to Love came home fourth.

O’Reilly will be chasing his first cup win, and says he couldn’t have a better drive than Tiger Tara.

The pair have a long-time relationship on the racetrack, and in last year’s edition of the cup finished in sixth.

Typically modest, O’Reilly is talking down the horse’s chances.

He might have qualified in number one spot, but is now sitting as fifth or sixth favourite and that takes the pressure off, he said.

Yes, the nerves might be nipping round the edges just prior to the race, but once he’s on track, O’Reilly said the race just takes over.

“You just get out there and get on with it.”

Yesterday it was just business as usual, farm work, horse work and little time to think about the possibility of his name being engraved on the harness racing industry’s top trophy.

The horse has raced well all season, but 1000 things can happen on the day, O’Reilly said.

He has two other drives on cup day, in races two and four.

The first day at Flemington confirmed Tarzino’s standing as the top staying three-year-old with his effortless victory in the Gr.1 VRC Derby.

And Oaks day last Thursday didn’t pass without two more New Zealand-breds hailing the judge.

Bred and sold at Karaka by Terry and Vicky Pascoe’s Club Med Lodge, Yellen (Pentire) came up trumps for expatriate Kiwi trainer Chris Waller, who later produced Hursley (Makfi) to win the Listed TCL Curved TV Stakes.

He was bred by Gerry Harvey and sold through his Westbury Stud draft at the Karaka sale last year.

For good measure, the New Zealand bred galloper Tristam’s Sun (Yamanin Vital) landed his second successive Kyneton Cup to take his lifetime earnings beyond the $300,000 mark for Brendan Tohill and the Shergar Thoroughbreds team.

The Tinwald Cycling Club travelled to Methven to contest a 45km handicap event, with the coveted Peach Cups up for grabs on Sunday.

Bruce Blackburn alongside comarker Liz Wylie worked hard off the front to maintain a gap to the chasing marks.

It was Blackburn who had the strongest sprint to claim the victory with Wylie on his tail to deservedly secure the second place spoils.

Don Morrison rode strongly to charge into third place with Lucy Kirwan producing a top effort taking fourth position.

A large bunch sprint determined the remainder of spots and fastest time honours.

Scratch rider Tony Ward produced a well-timed sprint to take the fifth place spoils and fastest time honours covering the course in 71.13.

Co-markers Bailey O’Donnell and Sam Letham secured second and third time.

The juniors and division 2 contested a 15km handicap event.

A good field of 15 youngsters took to the line with Caitlin Titheridge coming out victorious after a solid solo ride to catch the lead bunch before jumping clear on the finish line.

Ryan Jackson continued his good recent form with a hard fought second.

Ethan Titheridge gave his big sister some cheek in the charge to the line to secure the third place spoils.

Isabella Roulston, Maddy Lowry and Charlotte Gray rounded out the top six.

Scratch rider Abe O’Donnell rode the course in 25.22 to secure fastest time honours from comarker Matt Clough.

Kerry Clough took division 2 honours from Janette Hooper who secured second and fastest time.

Next week the club will contest a 48km handicap event.

Caitlin Titheridge was the best of the young brigade on Sunday.

Notable win for 1st XI

Ashburton College’s 1st XI took a four wicket win over The Willows Cricket Club in their annual invitational tie in Christchurch on Sunday to win the Bruce Dickinson Trophy.

With the weather looking threatening, skipper Kieran Hunt was relieved when the hosts chose to bat after winning the toss.

Opening bowler Sam Hall made the first breakthrough, sending Mario Williams back to the pavilion lbw.

Mid Canterbury father and son pairing of Denis and Ben Mably batted cautiously and the Willows were impressed by College’s sportsmanship when the boys recalled Denis, who was run out.

College’s sportsmanship was soon rewarded when Denis was caught by Scott Punselie at first slip off the bowling of Kieran Hunt and the next wicket quickly followed thanks to Gareth Hunt taking the catch from Nic Hill off his brother, Kieran’s, bowling.

Two further wickets followed in quick succession with Punselie removing Jeremy Wilson before local boy Jack Meyrick was clean bowled

by Gareth Hunt for nought.

After an early lunch due to rain, the Mid Canterbury duo of Ben Mably and Matt Tait began rebuilding the Willows’ innings and put on 48, but when it appeared the game was getting away from College, Punselie bowled Mably for 32.

Tait was next to go, caught by Will Graham off Ben Niles before Josh Buchanan dismissed Courtney for a duck by hitting his leg stump.

Mitchell Hay’s stoic resistance was then ended by Buchanan and Hall finished the innings with the tail ender giving a catch to keeper Zach Naldrett, leaving the home side all out for 117.

Although College needed just over two runs an over, Hunt’s side were aware a good foundation would be essential.

The captain decided to open with right hander Michael Burton and left handed Zach Naldrett in an attempt to upset the line and

length of the bowlers. The ploy initially worked as College raced to 15 without loss in the first four overs.

Burton and Naldrett had doubled that score before the latter was dismissed, stumped by an excellent piece of wicket-keeping.

Ten more runs were scored before Burton went lbw before Kieran Hunt hit a fine cover drive for four, but Meyrick gained his revenge by finding the edge for the ball to loop to silly mid-off.

Thomas Ravenscroft and Liam O’Connor put on an accomplished batting display and waited patiently for the bad ball, but the 43-run partnership was finally ended by a good catch from Tait.

Ravenscroft was next to go when he was caught behind attempting a late cut shot before Gareth Hunt was given out lbw off Mably.

Eighteen runs were required off the remaining 16 overs, which were comfortably gained thanks to good shot selection by Niles and Graham to win by four wickets with eight overs to spare.

Disappointing four-wicket loss for Mid Canterbury

Mid Canterbury’s Hawke Cup preparations got off to a disappointing start in a four wicket loss to North Otago at Centennial Park in Oamaru on Sunday.

Bevan Ravenscroft won the toss and elected to bat first against the old enemy, but it wasn’t a great day for the openers.

by Otago under-19 representative Nathan Smith off the bowling of seamer Ricky Whyte.

Jason Morrison (2) soon followed after being dismissed by Cameron Grubb, before Brad Fleming clean bowled Jono Print (18) to account for the top order.

Bo Houston’s (17) wicket was then taken by Grubb, while Mitch Sim was bowled by South African Francois Mostert for 10 and Mor-

gan Gallagher went for a duck after being caught by Jordan Horrell off Fleming’s delivery.

Richard Print was then out lbw after top scoring with 29 off Horrell’s ball before Fleming dismissed Ryan Cockburn for seven to claim his third wicket of the innings.

Hayden Sinclair (8) was then removed by South African Stefan Grobler and Deon Biggs was caught and bowled by Horrell for

nought to see the visitors all out for 153 in the 43rd over.

In reply, opener Duncan Drew posted 17 before being caught by Winter off Sinclair, while Reagan George (14) was dismissed lbw and Sinclair took his second wicket to remove Ben Cant for 8.

Grobler and Jeremy Smith could only muster seven and four and were clean bowled by Ravenscroft and Sinclair respectively, but Mostert then steadied the

ship with an unbeaten 53.

Sinclair’s fine form continued and he dismissed Nathan Smith for 10 while Brady Kingan was 34 not out when North Otago surpassed Mid Canterbury’s total in the 45th over with four wickets intact.

It was an impressive day with the ball for Sinclair, taking 4 for 24, while Ravenscroft (1 for 32) failed to reproduce the form he showed for club side Lauriston on Saturday, where he took 7 for 18.

BY DAVID LEGGAT Brendon McCullum has given due credit to Australia, but insists the gulf between the teams is not as great as the margin of defeat in the first test yesterday suggests.

“The size of the result was fair,” the New Zealand skipper said, reflecting on the 208-run beating.

“We were completely outplayed but I don’t think it’s an indication

of the gap between the sides.

“We’ve shown over a long period that we’re able to bounce back away from home.

“But we won’t lose heart. We know we’ve got a good side and skilled players and our style, when we’re able to get the ascendancy, works for us.

“We’ll be better for the run in this test and the beauty is it’s a three-match series and we’ve still

got an opportunity to win it.”

He bemoaned New Zealand missing a trick on the first day when the bowling let them down, through a lack of accuracy and patience.

McCullum reckoned Trent Boult and Doug Bracewell will benefit from the match, and he batted off criticism of offspinner Mark Craig, who conceded 234 runs in 45 overs for three cheap wickets

at the end of Australia’s second innings.

“We’ve seen in the past he gets better as tours go on.”

McCullum liked the way the batsmen, notably Kane Williamson and openers Tom Latham and Martin Guptill, handled the Australian attack. Williamson scored “probably the best hundred I’ve ever seen from a New Zealander in the time I’ve been playing”.

McCullum was sawn off by an awful umpiring decision from Englishman Nigel Llong on 80 yesterday, but had no grumbles.

“Both Nigel Llong and Richard Illingworth are two of the best umpires in world cricket, who are allowed to make the occasional mistake. That’s just the game and you’ve got to cop it sweet. That was certainly not the winning and losing of the game.”
