Methven has had a spruce-up as it prepares for 200 people to descend upon the town tomorrow for its first ever New Zealand Community Boards Conference.

Methven Community Board members are looking forward to hosting the twoyearly event, in conjunction with the Ashburton District Council.

They are excited about meeting fellow representatives from community boards as far south as Bluff and as far north as Te Hiku.

At the helm of the organising team locally is district councillor Liz McMillian.

She said community boards were generally made up of “down to earth,

grassroots kind of people”.

The two-day conference would be a good opportunity for Methven members to learn and be inspired by others who could be working on similar projects and goals.

“There’s people coming from all over New Zealand, they are all community minded people and passionate about community boards and their local community, so it’s great to have them all here,” McMillan said.

And the town was looking good after the council’s open spaces department had completed a number of jobs in time for the opening, such as revamping four central raised garden beds and tidying up around Welcome to Methven signs. In

addition, she and other volunteers were installing fairy lights.

Among those in attendance will be at least three visiting mayors, from Gore, Horowhenua and Selwyn, as well as associate minister of local government Jacqui Dean. The conference programme includes several speakers, one of whom is local youth leader Sam Johnson, as well as a number of workshops.

Hosted at the Methven Heritage Centre, the conference kicks off with a social function tomorrow night, followed by two full working days before a gala dinner and awards ceremony on Saturday night.

Hakatere seal catches the morning rays

An introductory sign language class will be held at the Ashburton Public Library on Havelock Street tonight. Carol Smith from Deaf Aotearoa New Zealand will be conducting the class, which begins at 6pm to coincide with New Zealand Sign Language Week, which runs in May every year to raise awareness of the country’s deaf community and to promote their language and culture.

Admire from a distance – that is the advice of the Department of Conservation for fur seals resting on Mid Canterbury shores.

There are sightings from time to time along our beaches of kekeno, or the New Zealand fur seal, and they are the country’s most common seal.

Department senior ranger biodiversity Nicky Armstrong at Geraldine said the species was found throughout most of New Zealand, with the exception of the upper North Island.

“During the winter months they spend a lot of time on-shore resting, so we at DOC tend to get a bit of a surge in reported sightings around this time,” Armstrong said.

“They are generally fine and the best thing people can do for them is to admire them from a distance and let them be,” she said.

“It looked like it was on holiday, it was just sun bathing.”

Real estate app launch Eliza Waszczak of Bayleys Real Estate Ashburton is launching a free app this week. The new mobile application takes buying and selling homes to the palm of the hand, with listings, sales and appraisal requests. “People can now make an inquiry with the touch of their screen,” she said.

The app will also feature a local offers section, and Waszczak plans to partner with businesses to offer promotions and discounts. The get-together at Somerset Grocer, with free drinks and nibbles, will be 5.30pm on Thursday.

Recognising community work

The hard work of a variety of volunteering groups from around the Ashburton District was celebrated on Monday evening.

Seven awards were presented at the Trustpower Community Awards at the Hotel Ashburton, along with runner-up and commendation awards.

Mayor Donna Favel said it was fantastic to be able to celebrate our volunteer sector and to work with such a community-minded organisation.

John Driscoll attended on behalf of the previous year’s su-

preme award winners, the Ashburton Community House.

He spoke of having the opportunity to travel to the national awards in Rotorua earlier in the year.

“To be able to see the variety and scope of the community projects was just amazing,” he said.

The first award presented during the evening was the Youth Community Spirit award, which was won by Tayla Wright.

Trustpower community relations representative Abbie Siely said it was fantastic to have the opportunity to celebrate the next

generation of volunteers.

The five category awards were presented, with awards on offer for, Heritage and Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, Sport and Leisure and Education and Child/youth development.

The final award of the evening was the supreme award, which was presented to the Filipino Dairy Workers in New Zealand Inc. Chairman Earl Magtibay said one of the best things that had happened through the organisation was being able to meet good people, and that no matter how

hard things may be, there will always be a silver lining.

“Thank you for making us matter,” he said.

Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew was the final speaker of the evening, expressing her sadness that it would be her final community awards as MP for Rangitata.

“It is fantastic to come to awards like this and learn what fantastic groups are operating in our community,” she said.

“This is in Ashburton’s DNA and this allows us to show it, and we are such a richer community because of it.”

Rural Support Trusts form national body

A national body has been formed to represent all Rural Support Trusts across the country.

Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust co-ordinator Allan Baird said the move to form the Rural Support National Council came about to help network the 14 regional trusts in operation around New Zealand.

“It was very difficult to deal with national matters in a co-.ordinated way,” he said.

The Mid Canterbury trust was formed in 1991 to assist rural people in dealing with adverse weather events however its purpose has morphed in recent years to include providing support with financial, animal welfare, and personal crises, with a focus on mental health.

“Up until recently we’ve been very small but we’ve ramped up and become more active now we have taken on a farmer wellness role,” Baird said.

Each of the 14 trusts operates independently under its own rules and guidelines, but there were times a national voice was needed.

“Rather than 14 trusts dealing with a national entity it will be more efficient for one body to do it on behalf of all of them,” he said.

“Rural Support Trusts operate independently in their areas, staffed by local people who really know their local communities,” Guy said.

“All trusts have trained facilitators who can assist rural people with a range of issues. The facilitators are all local people who know the area and the farming or growing industries, and much of their work is helping sometimes isolated rural communities keep connected and build morale when the going is tough.”

In its first meeting the national council elected its first chairperson, Waikato RST chair Neil Bateup, and Gavan Herlihy from Otago was appointed vice chairperson. The Rural Support National Council will be structured as a charitable trust responsible to the trusts around the country.

Celtic Rugby Club celebrated its smoke-free status on Saturday with a special launch and open day.

Back in January, the club adopted the idea and, after taking some time to settle in to the new regime, made it all official at the weekend.

The announcement follows the same practice introduced by Allenton and Collegiate Rugby Clubs, whose grounds are now all smoke-free.

Celtic Rugby Club president Kevin Donaldson has been working with the Mid Canterbury Cancer Society, which has provided support, resource information, signage and banners.

With 500 people playing rugby at the Celtic grounds on Saturday, he said it was a good occasion to “kick it off”.

“As a community, and as a club, it’s how we want to do things,” he said.

“It’s all still in the education faze and a few forget and strike up, but we say, ‘hey, would you mind heading across the road?’

“It’s made it better for everyone, especially with so many kids (on site). We have 200 JAB players, which sets a good example.”

Mid Canterbury Cancer Society health promoter Mandy Casey has worked with Community & Public Health health promoter Carly McDowell to see the project through to reality.

“Celtic has a large JAB and it is great to have the grounds smokefree with children not visibly seeing smoking,” says Casey.

“Few parents, smoking or non-smoking, want their children to become smokers, so having smoking not visible, is great news.

“It sends a positive message to players, coaches, managers and supporters. Smoking has a negative effect on sports performance, the club encourages

their players to achieve the best of their ability, being smoke-free makes sense. It’s about the smoking, not the smoker.”

Donaldson said the Celtic clubrooms were one of the first in Mid Canterbury to become smoke-free about 15 years ago.

The proposal for the grounds to become smoke-free was motioned by a committee member and the Cancer Society spoke with club members about how to see it through to fruition.

Since they made the decision, Donaldson said it had been smooth sailing and he didn’t see anyone smoking on their fields on Saturday.

“It’s not for me to say what other clubs should do, but it’s been a good fit for us,” he said.

“Thanks to the Cancer Society for providing excellent support and education.”

At the end of May, World Smoke-free Day will be celebrated at EA Networks Centre.

Ashburton District Community Aw Advocacy group, Filipino Dairy Workers in New Zealand Inc. (FDWNZ) were named the Supreme Winner at Monday night’s 2017 Trustpower Ashburton District Community Awards.

Other top achievers recognised at the Hotel Ashburton function, was the Ashburton Museum volunteer team, St John Ashburton operations volunteer team, Fa’a Pasifika Play Group Ashburton,

Coronation Target Shooting Club and Friends of the School – Our Lady of the Snows School.

Trustpower awarded prize money to community groups across five categories, along with

the Supreme Winner and the Youth Community Spirit Award, which went to Ashburton College’s Tayla Wright.

The Supreme Award winners received a framed certificate,

a trophy, $1500 prize money and will go on to represent the district at the 2017 Trustpower National Community Awards, which take place in Queenstown next April.

Filipino Dairy Workers in New Zealand Inc “The winner of the 2017 Trustpower Ashburton District Community Awards is an organisation that is working to make New Zealand a home away from home for a much-loved group within the community.

Congratulations to Filipino Dairy Workers in New Zealand Inc. The origins of this group go back more than 10 years, when a handful of Filipino farmers in Rakaia would gather on their days off to share experiences and support each other through the challenges of dairy farming.

These days, the group is formally registered and provides training, advice and support to more than 300 members and their families.

FDWNZ arranges courses in food safety, workflow systems, first aid and driving, through funding from lottery grants.

They conduct free seminars on employment rights, immigration, and progress in the dairy industry to keep their

members up to date.

The group successfully petitioned to have mobile consular services in Ashburton, saving workers time and money travelling to renew their passports.

Because of their actions, this service is now offered nationwide.

The organisation has become a respected source of knowledge for migrant worker issues and is participating in a PhD project through Lincoln University on the integration of migrant dairy workers in New Zealand. This year, they are celebrating their tenth anniversary as an incorporated society and it is our pleasure to be able to recognise your many achievements ahead of this milestone.

Riders out in force for TT event

One hundred and sixty two riders turned out to take part in the Ashburton Motorcycle Club’s TT day on Sunday.

The event catered for riders as young as six to veterans in their 60s.

Organiser Shane Stocker said the conditions on McCosker’s property at Wakanui were “perfect”.

“We had two tracks – one vintage motocross track with 25 riders and one for modern bikes next door, with about 162 riders on it,” Stocker said.

Thirteen racing classes were held throughout the day, along with three VMX classic bike classes.

Voters head to the polls South Koreans voted yesterday for a new president, with victory widely predicted for a liberal candidate who has pledged to improve ties with North Korea, re-examine a contentious US missile shield, and push sweeping economic changes.

Conservatives worry that a victory by Moon Jae-in might benefit North Korea and estrange South Korea and its most important ally, the United States.

Moon was the clear favourite as conservative forces struggled to regroup after the huge corruption scandal ended Park Geun-hye’s presidency.

“I gave all my body and soul (to the election) to the very end. My party and I invested all our efforts with a sense of desperation, but we also felt a great desire by people to build a country we can be proud of again,” Moon, 64, told reporters after casting his ballot.

Kiwi actor Cliff Curtis has just landed the role of a lifetime – cast as a lead character in all four of James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar films. Producer Jon Landau revealed the news yesterday, saying he and Cameron were “really excited”. “Not only is Cliff a great actor but he is a great person too,” said Landau from his Los Angeles office. Curtis will play Tonowari, who is the leader of the Metkayina, the reef people clan. Landau said he and Cameron, who are members of New Zealand’s screen advisory board, have followed Curtis’ career from Once Were Warriors through to Dark Horse.

Say a little prayer before you fly Feeling nervous before your flight?

Travellers at one German airport can now receive spiritual solace by entering a booth and listening to a prayer of their choice before boarding the plane.

The prayer booth at Stuttgart Airport’s Terminal 3 features 300 prayers from various religions in 65 different languages, airport spokesman Johannes Schumm said on Friday.

“Often, passengers still have a bit of time before their departure at the gate,” Schumm added. “The prayer booth is an offer by the airport’s chaplains to provide a moment of contemplation.”

Designed by Berlin artist Oliver Sturm, the former photo booth offers a vast variety of prayers, including the Christian Lord’s Prayer, the Jewish Shma Israel and the Islamic muezzin’s call to prayer. The Hindu Hare Krishna chant, Tibetan monk chants, Buddhist sutras, prayers of Shamans from New Guinea or Mali, even American TV preachers are also available on the touch-screen display.

In addition to the big monotheistic faiths, polytheistic religions and animist beliefs are also included.

The ‘Gebetomat,’ which roughly translates as ‘Pray-o-Matic,’ was first designed by Sturm in 2008. Its red cabin has a grey curtain and an adjustable swivel chair inside. The booth is free and will be available for three months at Stuttgart Airport’s boarding area next to Gate 310.

Lawyers are arguing whether a rip-off of Eminem’s Lose Yourself was used for a National Party campaign ad in the 2014 general election.

Oliver quickly found the funny side.

“The track they used is literally called ‘Eminem-esque’,” he quipped. “If you’re going to rip off someone else’s work, maybe don’t include the name of the person you’re ripping off.”

Smoke-free stance a good move Megan Gnad

ot that many years ago, the idea of a smoke-free rugby club in New Zealand would have been practically inconceivable.

Yet, time is an amazing thing and in 2017 it’s not only an idea, it’s a practice that is heading towards becoming the norm.

The Celtic Rugby Club celebrated its smoke-free status on Saturday with a special launch and open day.

They first adopted the initiative back in January and now join Allenton and Collegiate rugby clubs, whose grounds are now all smoke-free.

Supported every step of the way by the Mid Canterbury Cancer Society and Community & Public Health, what may be even more surprising is there’s been no major reports of any trouble or backlash.

Some may be asking whether this is encroaching one step too far into people’s right and choice to smoke.

But, when you consider 500 people were playing rugby at the Celtic grounds alone on Saturday, including 200 JAB players, the opportunity to set a standard and a good example is an important stance.

Smoke-free Canterbury endorses creating Smoke-free/ Auahi Kore sports clubs and grounds, saying it sends a positive message to players, coaches, managers and supporters, and is an important way to stop young people from starting smoking.

By creating smoke-free environments they claim it improves performance, creates a familyfriendly environment and helps prevent people from taking up smoking in the first place.

It also goes a long way towards reaching the Government’s target goal of achieving a Smoke-free New Zealand by 2025.

The timing for local clubs going smoke-free is also spot-on with World Smoke-Free Day being celebrated at the end of May, at EA Networks Centre.

When a pivotal role model, such as a rugby club, takes a stand and chooses to become smoke-free, it sends a powerful message to its members, players and wider community, of what will be tolerated in our society and community.

This may be a decision that affects long-time members, stalwarts and rugby fans, but it’s a decision that will have longreaching results now and well into the future.

his week’s opinion discussion centres around New Zealand’s drinking culture and whether you’re noticing the same trends in Mid Canterbury.

A recent Massey University study has found women aged under 24 who buy RTDs, drink around 24 litres a year – more than the heaviest group of male drinkers.

However, early national newspaper stories failed to state that the amounts consumed are based on absolute alcohol.

Professor Sally Casswell says a popular RTD, such as Smirnoff Ice, comes usually in a 300ml bottle and has an alcoholic strength of 5 per cent. Therefore, it contains 15ml of alcohol.

Thus, to consume 24 litres of absolute alcohol in the form of a typical RTD requires drinking 1600 bottles a year or 30 bottles a week, resulting in very high levels of consumption.

Give sign language a go this week T

his week is New Zealand Sign Language Week.

It has particular significance for me this year because, as part of my role as mayor, I have recently been appointed patron of the New Zealand Hearing Association’s Ashburton branch.

As I learn more about the association and the challenges of living with hearing impairment, my eyes are being opened to how many of us take the ability to hear for granted.

In local government, we are always talking about listening, but it is very difficult to listen if you can’t hear.

To support our councillors to listen and hear as well as they can, I have asked the Hearing As-

sociation if they can offer us the hearing tests they also provide to local businesses.

The association’s mission is to improve the quality of life for all people with a hearing loss.

It aims to advance their interests and welfare and that of all who support them. Encouraging people to learn sign language and use it in their day-to-day lives is part of achieving this goal.

If you have the opportunity to learn some sign language and use it this week, please do so.

Hopefully you’ll get the bug to learn more.

Sign language is one of New Zealand’s official languages and is used daily by more than 20,000 Kiwis. Rather than being a signed form of spoken English, it is a separate language with its own structure and grammar.

New Zealand Sign Language Week is important in raising awareness of our deaf community and providing a platform for deaf people to promote their language and culture.

We are lucky to have some shining lights in the deaf community, including New Zealand’s first deaf Member of Parliament

Mojo Mathers, New Zealand Hearing Association national president Tony Rush, and president of the Hearing Association’s Ashburton branch, Russell Anstiss.

In the past year, Russell has been awarded life membership of the Hearing Association, after 31 years of commitment to the organisation, including about 25 years on its executive board. A very impressive contribution!

Overheating economy a risk – IMF The International Monetary Fund sees a heightened risk of New Zealand’s economy getting too much of a lift from migration or strong terms of trade, which could overcook growth and reignite rapid gains in house prices.

The global body of 189 member countries, set up to foster international monetary co-operation, yesterday released its formal report on New Zealand’s economy, having given a preliminary assessment in March.

The IMF is relatively upbeat about the state of New Zealand’s economy which had been underpinned by low interest rates, a booming construction sector, strong migration and improving terms of trade.

However, the international agency noted a growing risk that New Zealand’s record migration

Bosses can have a right to know about criminal charges that are relevant to a worker’s job even if the employee has name suppression, the New Zealand Supreme Court has ruled.

The country’s highest court this month released its decision in a case involving a former University of Otago security guard and the tertiary institution.

The guard was given name suppression after being discharged without conviction for charges of assaulting a female and willful damage.

A university staff member, who had received a tip-off, was in the

public gallery of the Dunedin District Court when the man was sentenced, and after seeking legal advice, told management about the offending.

The university suspended the man, and he was given a final written warning as a result of an employment investigation.

He raised two personal grievances with his employer, claiming that his suspension and the final written warning each constituted an unjustified disadvantage, but the Employment Relations Authority found in the university’s favour.

The Employment Court agreed,

finding that it was not against the law for the staff member to communicate the suppressed information to the University because the University had a genuine interest in receiving the information.

The Court of Appeal upheld the Employment Court’s finding, as did the Supreme Court last week.

Justices William Young, Susan Glazebrook, Terence Arnold, Mark O’Regan and Ellen France said that the relevant part of suppression laws didn’t cover information going to “persons with a genuine need to know”.

Among the IMF’s policy recommendations that were flagged in March, the agency encouraged targeting housing supply bottlenecks as a means to ensure highly skilled migrants still want to come to New Zealand.

“The IMF notes the New Zealand economy is more resilient than in the past, specifically referencing our lower current account deficits than in previous periods of expansion,” Finance Minister Steven Joyce said in a separate statement.

“It also notes that New Zealand is benefiting economically from its current growth in population.”

What tourists are piling on the plastic A report by Visa shows tourists spent $2.88 billion on their cards last year – up 12 per cent on the previous 12 months.

Figures released yesterday at the Auckland Airport travel summit showed overall transactions were up by 23 per cent year-onyear.

Visitors from Australia, the US, China, the UK and Germany spent the most in New Zealand via Visa in 2016, with the US, South Korea, Japan and Germany delivering the greatest growth in spend. Only the UK, out of the top 10 markets, showed a decline in total spend in 2016 compared with 2015.

Several emerging markets outside of the top 10, such as Argentina, the Philippines and Ukraine saw an increase in spend of more than 50 per cent.

Visa’s Country Manager for New Zealand and South Pacific,

Marty Kerr, said data showed just how strongly New Zealand is performing overall as a destination market for international visitors.

“What we found most notable is that out of the top 10 nationalities coming to New Zealand – which represent 84 per cent of all Visa spend by visitors to this country – New Zealand improved its spend ranking across six of those inbound markets between 2015 and 2016,” said Kerr.

Visa transactions made by visitors rose from 14.8 million to just over 18.1 million.

“It’s pleasing to see New Zealand outperforming our Australian counterparts in more than half of the top nine markets by transaction volume. Overall, the inbound markets contributing the most to the increase in transactions were the US, China, Japan and Germany, each growing by more than 25 per cent,” said Kerr.

The report also shows Visa cardholders from South Korea, Singapore and China spent considerably more on average per transaction in New Zealand, and in some cases more than double that of visitors from Japan, Canada and the US, suggesting these markets represent a potentially higher-value visitor.

South Koreans spent $165 per transaction, Singaporeans $147 and Chinese $145. Germans spent least per transaction at $69.

South Koreans spent higher than average on food and groceries and in hardware stores. Chinese spent heavily on shopping and retail.

Beef 600-800g Quality Mark beef rump steaks, trimmed Marinade/dressing 1/4 C brown sugar 1/4 C fish sauce 3T lime juice 1T lemongrass paste 1T ginger juice 2t sesame oil Pinch of chilli flakes To serve 100g vermicelli noodles 1C red cabbage or lettuce, very finely chopped 2 carrots, peeled and cut into thin sticks 1 cucumber, shaved into ribbons 2 celery stalks, thinly sliced 1/2 red capsicum, deseeded and thinly sliced 1C cherry tomatoes, halved 1C fresh herbs – eg mint, coriander, basil 1 packet snow peas or sugar snap peas 3/4 C roasted peanuts or cashews, chopped (plus extra for garnish) 1 red chilli, chopped (for garnish)

solve the sugar. Taste and add more sugar, fish sauce, lime juice or chilli to suit your taste. Place the beef in a resealable bag or container and pour half of the marinade in to coat the steaks (reserve the rest to use as the salad dressing later). Seal the bag and marinate for an hour or overnight in the fridge.

■ Beef: Heat a little oil in a frying pan (or on the barbecue) over a high heat. Cook the steaks for 3-4 minutes until the underside is crunchy and browned, then turn over and cook for another 3-4 minutes for medium rare or cooked to your liking. Remove from the heat to a warm plate, cover loosely with foil and rest for 10 minutes before carving across the grain into thin strips.

■ To serve: Place the noodles in a heatproof bowl and pour boiling water over to cover them. Let stand for about 10 minutes until soft then drain. Gently combine the beef, noodles and salad ingredients with the remaining dressing, season with salt and pepper and arrange in bowls. Garnish with extra nuts, fresh herbs and chopped red chilli.

It’s time to take stock W

ith winter on the doorstep it’s a good time to make a batch or two of stock to freeze for soups, stews, casseroles, risottos and many other recipes.

Stocks are a great way to use up vegetable offcuts and carcasses left over from roast chickens. Feel free to mix it up with whatever you’ve got in the fridge.

Fish stock 2.5kg fish bones 2C mirepoix (2 parts onion, 1 part carrot and 1 part celery) 50g butter 12C water 1C dry white wine 1 clove 6 peppercorns 1 bay leaf 3 sprigs of thyme 3 parsley stems ■ Melt butter over a low heat in a large, heavy-based stock pot.

■ Add mirepoix mix and sweat until the vegetables are soft and the onion translucent, without browning.

■ Pour in wine, mix and bring to a slow simmer.

■ Place fish bones on top of mirepoix to prevent bones from scorching.

■ Cover with cold water ■ Add herbs and spices and simmer uncovered for 45 minutes.

■ Strain and discard bones, vegetables and herbs.

Chicken stock 2 chicken carcasses About 3 litres of cold water 2 onions, peeled and chopped 2 carrots, washed and chopped 2 stalks celery, chopped A handful of parsley, chopped 2 bay leaves

2T dried thyme 8-10 peppercorns Salt to taste ■ Place chicken bones in a large stockpot and cover with cold water.

■ Bring to the boil and reduce heat to low.

■ Simmer very gently for up to five hours.

■ Do not stir, but skim the scum and excess fat from the top of the simmering stock occasionally.

■ Add the vegetables, herbs, peppercorns and salt.

■ Simmer without stirring for another hour.

■ Strain stock through a finemeshed sieve into another container.

■ Place in the fridge and scrap the fat off the top when chilled.

■ Use the chicken stock in recipes or transfer into storage contain-

ers and freeze for later use.

■ Chinese chicken stock: Substitute 6 to 8 whole chopped scallions, 3 or 4 cloves of garlic and a couple thick slices of fresh ginger for the onion, carrot, celery and herbs.

■ Indian chicken stock: Substitute vegetables and herbs with six cloves of chopped garlic, a knob of ginger, roughly chopped, and 2t cumin seeds.

■ Thai chicken stock: Substitute vegetables and herbs with eight spring onions, a stalk of lemongrass and two thick slices of fresh galangal or ginger.

Beef stock 2kg beef bones – use a mix of marrow bones and bones with a little meat on them, such as oxtail, short ribs, or knuckle bones (cut in half by a butcher) 2 carrots, cut into 3cm pieces 1 leek, trimmed, cut into rings

1 onion, quartered 1 garlic head, halved crosswise 2 celery stalks, cut into chunks 2 bay leaves 2T black peppercorns 1T cider vinegar Large stockpot or a large slow cooker ■ Preheat oven to 200°C. Place beef bones, carrots, leek, onion, and garlic on a roasting pan or rimmed baking sheet and roast for 20 minutes. Toss the contents of the pan and continue to roast until deeply browned, about 20 minutes more.

■ Fill a large stockpot or slow cooker with water. Add celery, bay leaves, peppercorns, and vinegar. Scrape the roasted bones and vegetables into the pot along with any juices. Add more water if necessary to cover bones and vegetables.

■ Cover the pot and bring to a

gentle boil. Reduce heat to a very low simmer and cook with lid slightly ajar, skimming foam and excess fat occasionally, for at least eight hours, but up to 24 hours on the stovetop (do not leave on the stovetop unattended; turn off and continue simmering the next day.)

■ The longer you simmer it, the better your broth will be. Add more water if necessary to ensure bones and vegetables are fully submerged. Alternately, you can cook the broth in a slow cooker on low for the same amount of time.

■ Remove the pot from the heat and let cool slightly. Strain broth using a fine-mesh sieve and discard bones and vegetables.

■ Cool, then refrigerate overnight.

Remove solidified fat from the top of the chilled broth. Return to fridge or freeze.

Bacon hock stock 2 bacon hocks 2 onions, peeled and sliced 4 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped 2 carrots, sliced 2 stalks of celery, chopped 1t peppercorns 2 bay leaves 2 sprigs thyme A handful of parsley ■ Place all ingredients in a large stock pan or slow cooker. Cover with water, bring to the boil and simmer for 3-4 hours.

■ Slit the skin when it softens to allow flavour to infuse in the stock.

■ When cooked remove the skin and discard. Pull the meat off the bone.

■ Strain the stock and return the meat to the container.

■ Cool, then refrigerate or freeze.

Methven demolish Rakaia

A depleted round of Senior B rugby on the weekend saw few changes to the overall standings in the Michael Duff Memorial Trophy.

Hampstead and Southern played their fixture for the round on Anzac Day to allow for the opening of the duck shooting season with Hampstead handing the Southern side their first loss of the season in the process.

With both teams missing in action on Saturday it was left to the remaining six sides to battle it out as the race behind competition leaders, Southern, starts to really heat up.

Allenton made the best push, albeit through a narrow victory, when they beat Collegiate 13-6.

In second place on the ladder they are now three points clear of Celtic and just two points behind Southern.

Celtic claimed victory in a hard fought battle on their Club Day beating the visiting Mt Somers side 20-18.

Mt Somers have been involved in a number of closely fought games so far and appear to be only one win away from really clicking and getting their season moving as they look to emulate their efforts of 12 months ago.

On the day that the 37-man strong British and Irish Lions squad assembled for their first ever team photo of a busy winter, the strangest picture came in the form of a dog dressed up as a lion.

‘Lola’ the labrador was pictured tied to a fence as Warren Gatland’s touring party posed for a squad photo during their first get-together.

The squad met at London’s Syon Park Hotel where all 37 players were issued with their training kit ahead of the start of the series, which begins on June 3.

SBW ruled out Sonny Bill Williams’ concussion is likely to keep him out of the Blues’ team to play the Cheetahs at Eden Park on Friday. Midfielder Williams suffered the injury during the second half of his team’s 40-33 victory over the Waratahs in Sydney, leaving the field and not returning. A Blues media release yesterday stated Williams was likely to be unavailable, but that lock Patrick Tuipulotu was a possibility to return from a back injury.

Weighing up offers Tui Lolohea’s future – or otherwise – at the Warriors should be decided within the next week.

It’s understood that the Warriors’ utility has received at least three offers from Australian clubs, all of who want him to cross the Tasman this year. Lolohea is contracted until the end of the 2018 season to the Auckland club, but has been given permission to talk to other franchises. Lolohea met with West Tigers coach Ivan Cleary last week, while in Sydney with the Tongan team.

In keeping with Lions tradition, the honour of taking care of the official mascot, a cuddly lion toy, went to the youngest member of the touring party, Maro Itoje.

Scotland full back Stuart Hogg was bestowed with the task of transporting Billy the Lion in between matches during the Lions’ victories tour of Australia in 2013.

Scotland captain Greg Laidlaw was also in attendance after being named as Ben Youngs’ replacement after the England halfback pulled out of the tour due to family reasons.

Chelsea just one win away Chelsea are one more win away from taking the English Premier League title after beating Middlesbrough 3-0 yesterday.

The Blues have the chance to claim their second league title in three seasons when they face West Brom on Friday. They moved seven points clear of second-placed Tottenham, and all but consigned Middlesbrough to relegation.

Middlesbrough needs a miracle, as it trails Hull by six points with just two games remaining for both sides, and Hull’s goal difference was superior by 12.

Having seen Tottenham falter on Friday with defeat at West Ham, Chelsea set about taking advantage of the opportunity to extend its lead immediately.

Goals came from Diego Costa, Marcos Alonso, and Nemanja Matic in an attack masterfully orchestrated by Cesc Fabregas at Stamford Bridge.

Twice in the opening seven minutes, Fabregas played spectacular diagonal

passes to Alonso, who first volleyed onto the crossbar and then agonizingly across goal from the left.

Middlesbrough failed to heed the warning as it continued to allow Fabregas far too much space to operate, and was punished in the 23rd.

Fabregas picked out a more reliable finisher in Costa with another inchperfect pass, the striker slotting calmly through Brad Guzan’s legs to equal his best league tally with his 20th of the season.

Cesar Azpilicueta did his best imitation of Fabregas as he found Alonso at the back post to direct his volley past Guzan in the 34th.

Middlesbrough’s resistance and any doubt over the result was ended in the 65th when Matic chested down Fabregas’ cross and shot low past Guzan to make it 3-0.

But perhaps the biggest cheer of the night came in the 84th, as captain John Terry was introduced for a cameo appearance, as he nears the end of his 19year career with the club.

Giving coach Hansen a hand with All Blacks’ top XV W

ith a lot of focus on the upcoming Lions tour there’s the usual speculation around selection and who is in the running for the coveted black jersey when the time comes.

So, because it’s always a bit of fun to try and work out, I’ve had a look into the crystal ball and based on the premise that Steve Hansen will want to send out his best side early doors, here’s the 15 players I think are most likely to fill the positions, injuries of course playing a major factor in some of them.

Ben Smith Currently on the injured list, but it’s nothing too serious and let’s be fair, he’s the best in the world in the position and will enjoy the chance to run the ball constantly back at the Lions defenders.

14. Waisake Naholo If Hansen was worried about a

spot, this might have been it, but he will have been heartened in the past two weeks to see a freerunning Waisake Naholo back in action and doing what he does best.

13. Malakai Fekitoa He’s sharpened up his game in the past 12 months and looks a lot more like the original version of himself that we saw when he first burst onto the scene, a devastating ball carrier and a beast on defence.

12. Anton Lienert-Brown Three very good players all vying for this jersey but Hansen has shown he likes to reward guys who perform for him and LienertBrown did that last season, he

combines well with Fekitoa and with Barrett so that aids his chances big time.

11. Julian Savea There’s not many better sights in rugby than seeing the bus going hurtling down the paddock and full speed and we’ve seen a bit of that lately. Usually late getting to fitness side of things, he appears on song this year and the 11 jersey should be his.

10. Beauden Barrett Do we really need to say anything here? I don’t think so. Just sit back and watch the master at work. You know it will be a great pleasure.

9. Aaron Smith After his off-field indiscretion last year there were plenty ready to wipe him off the slate all together, but Smith has shown that he’s back and means business and when he’s on song, there aren’t any better around the ruck and maul than him.

8. Kieran Read Hasn’t played an awful lot of rugby, but what he has played has

been of his usual high standard. If he’s fit, he’ll start and expect him to up his game and lead from the front this year.

7. Sam Cane Again, a position we are blessed with options. But Cane seems to be Hansen’s man in the No.7 jumper and he is capable of doing great things, will need to keep on top of his game though with some talented individuals nipping at his heels.

6. Liam Squire This decision is based on Jerome Kaino not making it back in time to be selected, but either way Squire is a beast and will relish the black jersey again and has the potential to make it his own if he can keep his game at the high level it is already at.

5. Sam Whitelock With his leadership skills and outstanding playing style, Sam Whitelock is the shoo-in for this jersey alongside his old sparring partner, Brodie Retallick.

4. Brodie Retallick The other half of the bash

brothers, and one of the best players in the world. Brodie has been doing good things on the paddock this year, but you can bet your last dollar it’s only the start of it with more to come.

3. Owen Franks Not many better props in the world than Owen Franks and he’ll relish the in-your-face nature of a Lions tour with plenty of delight you would imagine. Too good not to have in the top 15.

2. Dan Coles Captain Hurricane has shown in his sort, but illustrious, All Blacks career that he’s a game winner and a guy who will give it all for his country, doesn’t even really need a secondary glance does it?

1. Joe Moody Another one of Hansen’s favourite men who, again, has done really good things in the black jersey. Still a few technical issues to be ironed out, but his physicality is a major plus in what will be a tour that requires plenty of up front fire.

Stalwart honoured with race name

By GreG Jones Galloping action returns to Ashburton today and good sized fields have been carded for the nine race programme which starts at 11.30am.

Catering for the progressive and maiden horses, there are competitive fields throughout the day and admission and racebooks are free.

Of special note is the naming of Race 2 after the late Alan McIntosh who made such a significant contribution to not only the Ashburton County Racing Club, but also to the overall management of the racecourse complex.

Quinellas could be the way to go during the day and here are a few which appeal as good chances. In the first High Play looks a great anchor chance as it has been freshened since some solid summer form and looks

well placed for a breakthrough victory. Couple it up with Prediction and the locals, Bobtail and Diorissimo.

Who Dares Wins and Moby should fight out the third, the distance maiden event. The former a good second in the southern debut and a subsequent trial winner will appreciate the distance and the locally trained Moby will enjoy the home track and has often looked to have the ability to win more than one race.

Race 4 on the card is a strong looking maiden event. Zakynthos was tested against much better opposition in the spring and performed with some credit.

On ability it should dispute the finish. Director has been a ‘hype’ horse and with added maturity may be ready to deliver on the promise it has shown to connections.

The best win bet on the day might be the top weight Enzedjewel in race 5. In fine form and claiming a 3kg allowance, Enzedjewel has performed well here in the past and looks to have the measure of this field.

Odd cricket dismissal stumps all It is the bizarre dismissal which defied physics and has polarised Australia.

Moonee Valley batsman Jatinder Singh was given out during his side’s Mid Year Cricket Association match against Strathmore Heights on Saturday despite the bails not being dislodged when the middle stump was knocked out of the ground.

How the bails managed to remain unmoved between leg and off stump remains up for debate, although Moonee Valley captain Michael Ozbun has a few theories.

“There was a little bit of debate and the umpire was a bit confused as well,” Ozbun said.

“Nobody had seen anything like that before.

“I was on the boundary, I saw the stumps fly and thought ‘all right, he got bowled, it was a silly shot’.

“Then everybody was standing

“I went out there, saw what was going on and it was very confusing.”

Both teams agreed Singh was out, with a later check of the rule book confirming they made the right call.

“We had no idea what the ac-

tual ruling on it was, but we all admired it for a few minutes,” Ozbun said.

“You probably couldn’t do that again if you tried.

“We weren’t sure if maybe (the stumps) were put it at a slight angle so there was just a little bit of pressure.

“When they were sitting on the stumps, they were in the grooves.

It wasn’t like the middle of the bails were above the stumps or anything.

“The ball had to have hit at the exact right point that the stump didn’t fly up, it went down.”

MYCA president Neil Daly confirmed the umpire made the correct decision in the “once in a lifetime” scenario.

“The only similar incident I had was a bail slipped down between the stumps and wedged between the stumps,” Daly said.

“It was given not out because it hadn’t completely been re-

moved. “They put the bail back on.”

Opinions have been divided on social media since a photo of the dismissal surfaced.

Jake Punton wrote: “This is tricky. The rules say the bails must be dislodged from the stumps. It looks like they have in fact been dislodged from middle stump as they are no longer resting on it so ill say out.”

Allan Howe added: “As a batsman after hearing the death rattle do you think you would hang around and argue after the fact your middle stump is 10 metres away?”

Bouchard eliminates Sharapova at Madrid Open Motivated more than usual, Eugenie Bouchard used her game to send a message to Maria Sharapova by defeating the Russian 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 in a thrilling second-round match at the Madrid Open yesterday.

Bouchard, one of the most outspoken players against Sharapova’s return to tennis following a doping ban, jumped up and down after converting her second match point in just under three hours.

The players casually shook hands at the net and exchanged brief plaudits.

It was their first meeting since Bouchard called Sharapova a cheater and said she should have been banned for life from the sport after testing positive for meldonium at last year’s Australian Open.

“I definitely had some extra motivation going into today,” Bouchard said.

“I was actually quite inspired before the match because I had a lot of players coming up to me privately wishing me good luck, players I don’t normally speak to, getting a lot of texts from people in the tennis world that were just rooting for me.

“So I wanted to do it for myself, but also all these people. I really felt support.

“It showed me that most people have my opinion, and they were just maybe scared to speak out.”

There were no major signs of animosity between them. They went about their business, not paying too much attention to each other in between points.

Bouchard defeated Sharapova for the first time by taking advantage of the Russian’s 49 unforced errors and struggles on serve, including nine double faults.

The 60th-ranked Canadian had 21 break opportunities, converting five of them.

Merrick Newcastle coach Ernie Merrick has been confirmed as coach of the Newcastle Jets for the next two A-League seasons. Merrick had been a frontrunner for the Jets role since Mark Jones was sacked last month, one year into a two-year deal.

During 241 A-League games, Merrick won the 2007 and 2009 titles with A-League heavyweights Melbourne Victory. He most recently coached at Wellington Phoenix, taking the New Zealand franchise to the 2015 finals series before stepping down eight games into the 2016-17 season.

What was just supposed to be a trip away with a few old softballing buddies turned into a gold medal-winning trip for Ashburton local, Eric Johnston.

Johnston won gold for softball in the recreational grade at the World Masters Games in Auckland recently.

“I was picked up by a guy I used to play with in Christch-

urch who was coming out from America to play in an old team of his,” he said.

“We just threw a team together, we hadn’t played together for 20 years.”

Despite only putting the team together “for a bit of fun”, the side went through their nine games in recreational division undefeated.

“We played against teams like Team Canada and Western Australia, so it was good com-

petition,” he said.

Now only playing softball in the local division, Johnston spent six years in America and Canada playing, before returning to New Zealand and winning Canterbury titles, and playing for Canterbury against Japan.

“I won a silver in motocross at the NZ Masters Games in Dunedin last year and in 2012, but this is the first time I have won something for softball,

especially at a world event,” he said. “I’m semi-retired from it now, but I still enjoy going out in the local league on a Saturday and just hitting the ball.”

Johnston was one of many athletes, officials and supporters who travelled from Mid Canterbury to the games.

Some of the sports attended include: Archery, athletics, basketball, cycling, hockey, rowing, softball, swimming and triathlon.

Kieran Foran announces move to Sydney Kieran Foran yesterday announced he will leave the Warriors at the end of the 2017 season to be closer to his two children in Sydney.

“It has been an incredibly tough decision to make but it has reached the point where I had to make a call and I’ve done that today,” said the 26-year-old standoff.

“I love it so much here at this club and I have so many people to thank for helping me to get my life and my football career back on track.

“I really wanted to find a way of staying and spending more time here because it’s so good being around the boys and the people here. Every day I have a smile on my face when I come

to training. “But, in the end, it came down to my kids and what’s best for them. I need to be back in Sydney to be closer to them.

“Before I do there’s plenty to do here. I want to finish here as well as I possibly can.

“We can do something this year and I want to play my part in that.”
