Ashburton hits city crime levels BY MICHELLE NELSON

Ashburton’s youth crime rate is hitting levels previously only seen in cities. In response, a funding bid has been made to provide for ramped up consequences for recidivist offenders. Safer Ashburton manager Kevin Clifford said the agency had applied for funding through Child, Youth and Family to run Supervision with Activity and Supported Bail programmes in response to unprecedented levels of
youth crime in the town. “The kind of activity we’re now seeing is more commonly seen in much larger centres, often in the North Island,” Clifford said. “In those centres funding is available to provide higher levels of intervention, but those contracts and funding have not traditionally existed in our community – because it hasn’t been needed.” Safer Ashburton along with other local agencies have been resourced to work with youth offenders at a much
lower level, however some of those young people had drifted into the periphery of the hardcore group responsible for much of the current crime wave. “It’s easier for police and other organisations to deal with those at the cusp of involvement or engaging in petty offending,” Clifford said.
