The families of murdered Work and Income workers Peg Noble and Leigh Cleveland were relieved to hear the verdicts they had been waiting for yesterday.

They are relatives who have had to endure the impossible following 49-yearold Russell John Tully pleading not guilty to the crimes. But yesterday was a new beginning in their lives, one marked by two guilty verdicts.

“I have been a bit uptight all day waiting, I am pleased about that. I just hope they put him away forever,” Kathleen Cleveland, the elderly mother of Leigh,

said yesterday from her home in Alexandra.

“It really hasn’t sunk in. I just think perhaps we could move on, but it will never completely go away, not only for us as a family, but for the girls in the office who witnessed everything,” she said.

She had not attended the trial, something which would have been too difficult. “I didn’t want to look at him to start with, to be in his presence. I just felt it would be too much.”

And she had not heard the details of how her daughter died until she saw media reports as the trial unfolded. A detective had previously informed a family member, but they had not told her,

knowing it would have been too difficult for her to bear. But she had followed the case in the news for the simple reason she had needed to know what happened.

“Because I couldn’t spend the rest of my life wondering. I’m pleased I never found out from the beginning, I would have been a proper mess,” she said.

She had heard the verdict immediately after it was delivered, as her son David had phoned her from the courthouse, after attending the last two days of proceedings.

Russell John Tully has been found guilty of murdering Ashburton Work and Income receptionist Peggy Noble and caseworker Leigh Cleveland.

It took the jury of seven women and four men just over seven hours to return to the courtroom and deliver the verdict to Justice Cameron Mander.

They also found Tully guilty of attempting to murder caseworker Kim Adams, but not guilty of attempting to murder her colleague Lindy Curtis.

He has also been convicted on two counts of unlawfully possessing firearms but discharged on the charge of setting a mantrap.

The 49-year-old stood quietly while the foreman delivered the verdicts.

Justice Mander then convicted him on the five guilty verdicts and discharged him on the two remaining matters.

Tully will return to court for sentencing on April 15.

The jury retired for deliberations at 4pm on Tuesday and adjourned for the night at 5pm. They returned to court at 9.30 yesterday morning.

Twice they requested to see the CCTV footage in the Work and Income office during the shooting.

Shortly before returning the verdict, a jury request for a copy of amicus lawyer James Rapley’s submission transcription was declined

by Justice Mander.

Tully was reported to be homeless at the time of the offending and aspects of his strained relationship with Work and Income caseworkers were teased out during the trial.

Work and Income witnesses, including Ms Adams and Ms Curtis, who was shot in the thigh and seriously injured during the rampage, described a demanding and manipulative character.

The Crown contested he had a particular grudge against Ms Cleveland and Ms Adams, who were the two caseworkers who dealt with him most often before he was trespassed from the office in early August as result of his “in-

timidating” behaviour.

Their names, along with the word “discrimination” were discovered on a handwritten note in Tully’s possession at the time of his arrest some seven and a half hours

after the shootings.

Summing up for the Crown on Monday, Mr Zarifeh said Tully had been flagged as the most difficult client on the agency’s books at the time.

On the Friday (August 29, 2014) before the shootings, a security guard contracted to Work and Income had warned Tully off, citing the trespass order, after he turned up unannounced.

Tully had also been forced to remove his belongings from a storage unit after he had been discovered to have been “camping” there.

A long wait for family, friends and colleagues It’s been a long 18 months for the family, friends and work colleagues of the victims of the Ashburton Work and Income shootings.

Many have maintained a vigil over the past two weeks listening to the morbid details of the day Peggy Noble and Leigh Cleveland died at the hands of Russell John Tully, found guilty of their murders in the High Court in Christchurch yesterday afternoon.

The public gallery was packed as the jury filed back in after seven hours of deliberations. The seven women and four men had returned to the courtroom three times with requests, heightening the apprehension of those present.

Many were anticipating a relatively quick decision. Crown prosecutors Mark Zarifeh and Andrew McRae had presented a strong case for each of the seven charges.

As Tully had declined legal representation and elected to remain absent for much of the 11 day trial, there was very little by way of cross examination.

Tully’s behaviour during the two brief appearances he made prior to Friday last week, resulted

summations. Earlier in yesterday’s proceedings, Tully watched attentively and took notes as the CCTV footage taken inside the Work and Income office at the time of the shootings was replayed.

It showed a man masked with a black balaclava enter the building and open fire in what the Crown described as 61 seconds of mayhem.

He repeated this when the jury requested a second viewing of a segment of the footage.

Until Friday (March 4) Tully had spent just four minutes of the trial, which opened on February 24, in the courtroom.

On the two occasions he was present in front of the jury Tully claimed to have been on a hunger strike, said he was unfit to stand trial and had been denied disclosure and legal representation.

By way of refusing to plead Tully had in effect denied all charges.

He also declined legal representation and has been assisted throughout the trial by amicus (friends of the court) lawyers James Rapley and Phil Shamy.

Andrew McRae and Mark Zarifeh have represented the Crown, which called 73 witnesses to the stand over the course of the trial.

The mood on day 11 of the trial was more upbeat. Family, friends and colleagues of the murdered women seemed confident yesterday’s verdict would find Tully guilty, as they chatted with others in the public gallery.

A large contingent of media had been present throughout the 11-day trial and yesterday was no exception. However, family members of the victims have maintained a low profile throughout proceedings.

Yesterday afternoon following the verdict, the family of Peggy Noble acknowledged the guilty verdict by way of a note handed to media in court, however they requested privacy.

They thanked the witnesses for their strength each displayed to reach yesterday’s outcome, and sent a message of love to all the victims of the tragedy.

He spoke over the top of presiding judge Justice Cameron Mander, accused him of trial fixing and was generally contemptuous of High Court proceedings.

On Friday his demeanour changed. He claimed to have reneged on his hunger strike. He sat quietly, albeit shackled to a chair and surrounded by prison guards.

He answered questions respectfully.

Yesterday, just days short of his 50th birthday he was convicted of two counts of murder, and one of attempted murder – relating to a shot fired over Work and Income caseworker Kim Adams’ head.

He stood against the wall flanked by prison guards, before he was taken back to the cell to await transport back to Christchurch Men’s Prison to await sentencing next month.

Those closest to the victims spent most of the trial in the upper gallery of the court room shielded from the prying eyes of a large contingent of media and members of the public.

However a collective gasp was audible as the verdicts were announced.

They were then shepherded out through a back entrance without comment bar a note from Peggy’s family thanking the witnesses and sending love and support to the victims.

The media pack on the court steps waiting for significant players was largely disappointed.

Ministry of Social Development chief executive Brendan Boyle fronted, saying his thoughts were largely with the families of Ms Noble and Ms Cleveland.

It was a sudden end to the unprecedented events of September 1, 2014 – events which shook a small country town to its very foundations.

While the trial may be over, healing is still a long way off.

Mrs Cleveland lives in Alexandra along with Leigh’s surviving siblings, a sister and two brothers.

“They will be pleased it’s over too. Nothing is going to bring her back, we have to live with the memories.”

In Peg’s former home in Ashburton, her partner Donald Campbell poured himself a beer following hearing the verdict.

“It’s a relief, it’s not going to bring Peg back, but it’s some sort

of closure. Hopefully the sentence fits the crime,” Mr Campbell said.

He had phoned one of his daughters and his parents to inform them of the verdict, after hearing it from Ministry of Social Development representative John Henderson who was at court when it was delivered.

Many of Peg’s family had been in court for the trial, but it was something he knew he would not have been able to handle. He had been a little on edge on Tuesday night as the jury asked to re-view crime scene video footage, but this would have been worse if he had been there, and it was foot-

‘A judge’s worst nightmare’

But again relations broke down.

The trial still proceeded, with both Mr Rapley and Mr Shamy appointed amicus curiae, or friends of the court, in order to help the court with the running of the trial and to cross-examine witnesses for Tully.

However, when the trial began, Tully was not present.

When the jury was selected, no accused person was present in the dock.

When Tully was due to be arraigned – with the serious charges put to him – he was not in the courtroom, and so the court’s default position was to record not guilty pleas.

The trial began with the Crown outlining its case against Tully. He was still not there.

It wasn’t until the morning of day two that Tully made his first appearance before the jury.

But as the Crown announced its first witness, Tully interjected: “Excuse me your honour, what am I actually doing here?”

Tully, restrained in a wheelchair, said he needed to “lie down” and claimed he was not fit to stand trial.

Justice Mander repeatedly asked him to be quiet before instructing Corrections prison wardens to remove Tully from the courtroom.

Tully refused to co-operate with at least six lawyers ahead of his High Court double-murder trial, including several experienced defence counsel and two Queen’s Counsel, before sacking them, the Herald understands.

He felt they were working for the Crown rather than in his best interests, it’s believed.

Tully, found guilty yesterday at the High Court in Christchurch of murdering Ashburton Winz receptionist Peggy Noble, 67, and case manager Susan Leigh Cleveland, 55, inside the Cass Street government building on September 1, 2014, was first due to stand trial in May last year.

The date was abandoned by Justice Cameron Mander – a former highly experienced and much-respected Crown prosecutor – after Tully refused to take counsel from his lawyer.

He further claimed that he had not received proper disclosure of the Crown case against him.

Tully also embarked on several hunger strikes.

A new trial date was set down for last November.

But at the eleventh hour, he again sacked his legal team, forcing Justice Mander to abandon the second date.

Under British law, trials in absentia were until 2001 banned and are still extremely rare.

Criminal law expert Professor Chris Gallavin isn’t aware of a trial of such magnitude being conducted in absentia in New Zealand.

“This was probably a judge’s worst nightmare,” said Professor Gallavin, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Massey University.

“This would have been an incredible headache for the judge and counsel. For everybody involved, it’s incredibly fraught.

“The court has had to walk the tightrope of ensuring that he gets a fair trial, that he doesn’t prejudice himself to the jury, and also hence the kid gloves approach by the judge to him.”

Law clerks at the Ministry of Justice are understood to have been scouring British and Commonwealth records for any legal precedent, but haven’t been able to find any similar cases.

Nigel Hampton QC, one of New Zealand’s most experienced defence lawyers who has conducted more than 100 murder trials, said he has “never ever come across anything like this”.

Tully remained in court for the last day of the Crown’s evidence.

crimes associated with drug offending, there were also significant health risks involved for people using synthetic drugs, Mr Banfield said.

Police urged users, or intended users, to seek help for their addiction, and said anyone with concerns about a family member or friend suffering from the effects of withdrawal, or still using illegal drugs, should contact the Alcohol and Drug Helpline on 0800 787-797.

Mr Banfield said Christchurch police staff had been an integral part of the ongoing focus on drug use and supply in Mid Canterbury, and police would continue to act on all information received.

He said investigations were ongoing.

The two people arrested in Rakaia on Tuesday will appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow.

In brief Crushed by own car A woman is in serious condition after being crushed between her car and a fence when she accidently left the handbrake off.

Emergency services were called to Clarks Beach at 6.58pm on Tuesday where a woman in her 40s was pinned to a fence after her car rolled into her. An Auckland Rescue Helicopter spokeswoman said the woman was able to get herself free but was unable to walk. The crew treated her and transported her to Middlemore Hospital.

A long standing dedication and commitment to the rural community is being recognised with Dromore farmer Sandra Curd named in Zonta’s top 50 women of achievement in New Zealand.

Revealed on International Women’s Day, Mrs Curd joined a group of selfless courageous women including former Prime Minister Helen Clark, Lesley Elliott and Louise Nicholas.

For Mrs Curd the award was an honour, particularly when she looked through the other impressive names on the list.

An active volunteer in the Winchmore/Ashburton area for over 30 years, Mrs Curd is also a life member of Rural Women

Sandra Curd NZ, Mid Canterbury provincial branch and current president and a member of Zonta Club Ashburton.

She has also been president of the Ashburton A&P Show.

While thrilled to receive the accolade, she said community volunteer work was something she enjoyed.

“I just like helping people and just being part of the community.”

Her community involvement started from a young age when she acted as a steward in the home industries pavilion at the Ashburton A&P Show.

Both hers and well known husband Rupert’s family have a proud history of community involvement and their own children also volunteer.

The awards marked 50 years of Zonta Clubs in New Zealand and focused on women who

have worked hard to focus their passion, drive and time into pursuing a better place for all women.

Selected by a judging panel of accomplished women, the recipients showed perseverance and courage in the face of some of the most serious issues facing women today.

Zonta New Zealand Governor Dr Janette Irvine said the organisation envisions a world in which women’s rights are recognised as human rights and every woman is able to achieve her full potential.

“In such a world, women have access to all resources and are represented in decision making positions on an equal basis with men.”

Four cops shot A gunman suspected of shooting and wounding four police officers was holed up at a rural New Zealand house last evening, police said.

Acting Police Commissioner Mike Clement addressed media yesterday afternoon at Police National Headquarters in Wellington.

He confirmed just one gunman was believed to be involved in yesterday’s shooting of four police officers.

One officer was in a serious but stable condition in Rotorua Hospital, and two more were in stable condition in Whakatane Hospital.

A fourth officer was being treated for a gunshot wound to his hand.

The incident unfolded when members of the Armed Offenders Squad attended a call out near Kawerau yesterday.

Mr Clement said officers were continuing to cordon and contain the situation.

Police are supporting the injured officers and their families, Mr Clement said.

A full and detailed investigation into the events would be held, he said.

Police Minister Judith Collins said a shotgun was used –– and all the officers shot were members of the Armed Offenders Squad, all of whom were fully kitted up.

Hutt Valley police have arrested a 52-year-old man in relation to an incident involving two young girls on their way to school. The man has been charged with assaulting a child and will appear in the Hutt Valley District Court on Tuesday.

He has been bailed to a private address until his next appearance.

Police would like to assure the public that very early on in their inquiries they had a strong indication of who the suspect was.

Body found Police found the body of a man at his home on the Coromandel Peninsula yesterday. The man appears to have died some days ago, police said. They were alerted of the death at the Kennedy Bay house by a family member of the man. Police said inquiries were under way to determine the circumstances of the man’s death.

No further information was available.

Quilt has origins in Ashburton A quilt to mark the 50th anniversary of Presbyterian Women Aotearoa New Zealand is touring New Zealand.

Ashburton’s St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church has had a big part to play in the quilt project. Ministry assistant Dellwyn Moylan conceived the idea, when she was struck by the importance of the anniversary occasion, which was in 2014.

“I thought we needed to find a way to mark it permanently and so I came up with the idea of a quilt with various groups around New Zealand making a block for it,”

she said. Auckland region member Natalie Watkins sewed the blocks together, and they include one from Ashburton, made by Barbara McFarlane of the Hinds Co-operating Parish.

Her block depicts Mid Canterbury’s patchworked landscape with mountains and rivers.

The quilt began a tour of the country 17 months ago, and it will be at St Andrew’s for the month of March, after which it will continue to travel around the South Island, finishing in Dunedin where it will be hung.

The MetService has issued a severe weather warning for strong winds in Canterbury this morning.

Nor’west gales are expected to become severe with damaging gusts of 140km/h in the high country during the morning, easing in the evening.

Gales are also expected to become severe on the plains and coast, with gusts of 120km/h in exposed places late this morning, easing in the evening.

A front is predicted to move north-east over the South Island, causing the gales over the South Island and lower North Island ahead of the front.

“Winds of this strength have the potential to bring down trees and powerlines, damage unsecure structures and make driving hazardous, particularly for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles. People are also advised to be aware of the fire risk in these areas,” the MetService said in its warning.

Behind the front a cooler south-west change is expected, and this could also reach severe gales about parts of coastal Southland and Otago, and Banks Peninsula tonight and early Friday morning.

Library completed by end of term

Ashburton Intermediate School’s new library is set to be finished by the end of this term.

Work on the new library and teacher resource room started late last year and the roof was completed last week.

Ashburton Intermediate School acting principal Judy Jemmett said once finished they will be using the two rooms which currently house the library and resource room as much-needed large modern learning classrooms.

“We’re looking forward to it.”

The current library block used to be two big classrooms but this was changed about 20 years ago.

The students should be moved into the classrooms by the beginning of Term 2.

The new library will also have an outdoor space where children can read on the grass.

Work also started on new high fencing at the school this week for the safety of special needs students. This is expected to be completed within three months.

Victims discharged St John transported two patients to Ashburton Hospital after a car crash on Tuesday. While the patients were reported initially to have serious injuries and moderate injuries respectively, they ended up being treated and discharged later that day. The incident was a collision between two cars at Ealing at about 11.15am, at the intersection of Ealing Road and Withells Road.

A visit by a senior FBI official is fuelling further speculation of a New Zealand visit by US President Barack Obama. FBI Director James Comey met with ministers and officials at the Beehive in Wellington yesterday. Trans Tasman reported that Mr Comey was believed to be laying the ground work for a presidential visit later this year. The US Embassy in Wellington said he was in New Zealand to discuss “a host of important issues regarding the safety and security of the citizens of both countries”. “The US-New Zealand law enforcement partnership remains steadfast, and we welcome the opportunity to work together to share critical information that will safeguard our Americans and New Zealanders from global threats,” the embassy said.

Clinton, Trump roll on Bernie Sanders breathed new life into his long-shot White House bid with a crucial win in Michigan’s primary Tuesday night, chipping away at Hillary Clinton’s dominance in the Democratic presidential race. Republican Donald Trump swept to victory in both Michigan and Mississippi, overcoming fierce efforts to blunt his momentum.

Even with Sanders’ win, Clinton and Trump moved closer to a general election face-off. Clinton breezed to an easy victory in Mississippi, propelled by overwhelming support from black voters, and she now has more than half the delegates she needs to clinch the Democratic nomination. Trump, too, padded his lead over Texas Senator Ted Cruz, his closest rival.

The front-runners turned their sights on November as they revelled in their victories.

“We are better than what we are being offered by the Republicans,” Clinton declared.

In a nod toward the kind of traditional politics he’s shunned, Trump emphasised the importance of helping Republican senators and House members get elected in November. Having entered Tuesday’s contests facing a barrage of criticism from rival candidates and outside groups, he also delighted in overcoming the attacks.

Fans of American actress Amy Schumer will have to wait only five months for her debut book on sex, love and comedy. The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo will hit the shelves on August 16, according to the actress’ website. “(It) will feature personal and observational stories from Schumer that range from the raunchy to the romantic, the heartfelt to the harrowing,” the website states. Publisher Jennifer Bergstrom said Schumer was perfectly suited to the medium. “Schumer is not an entertainer who can actually write. She’s a writer. Who also happens to entertain,” Bergstrom said. The book, which will also be released as an audiobook voiced

by Schumer herself, will be published by Gallery Books.

Pyongyang has previously said it has nuclear warheads small enough to put

on long-range missiles, but experts have questioned such claims.

This was the first time the North has publicly portrayed what its designs look like, though it remains unclear whether the North has a functioning warhead of that size or if it is simply trying to develop one.

North Korea warned Monday of preemptive nuclear strikes after the United States and South Korea began holding their biggest-ever war games, which will go on until the end of April.

Nicolas Cage is stepping behind the camera again to direct Vengeance: A Love Story.

The Oscar-winning actor is playing the lead role in the big screen adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ Rape: A Love Story and he recently signed on to replace filmmaker Harold Becker as director. Becker will stay on as an executive producer. Cage will play a detective investigating the rape of a single mother by four drug addicts. “I’m excited to work on Vengeance: A Love Story and bring Joyce Carol Oates’ bittersweet novel to the screen,” he said. “Storytelling has always been my passion and I’m honoured to work with this talented team to tell a tale of the suffering too many women have endured.”

E-cigarettes penalties similar to heroin After 35 years of smoking and a dozen failed attempts at quitting, Angela Gordon finally kicked her addiction - but she’s become a criminal in the process.

The 54-year-old nurse had been smoking since she was 12, trying patches, gums, inhalers and the medication Champix to drop the habit that drove her to smoke more than 40 cigarettes a day, making her increasingly ill in the meantime.

The Champix gave her suicidal thoughts and the rest were useless, until four years ago when she ordered an e-cigarette online from overseas.

She hasn’t picked up a cigarette since, and her doctor now considers her a former smoker. “Unfortunately my government considers me a criminal.”

The nicotine Ms Gordon uses in her e-cigarettes is classified as a Schedule 7 “dangerous poison” - the sale and possession of which is illegal.

To make matters worse she’s also become a trafficker, selling the product to a neighbour with early stage emphyse-

ma who quit smoking within two weeks of trying the e-cigarette.

A Senate inquiry into nanny state laws is conducting a public hearing on e-cigarettes in Sydney yesterday, with several former smokers giving evidence that “vaping” safer e-cigarettes has helped them kick long-term smoking habits.

Ms Gordon says complying with nanny state laws on e-cigarettes would mean taking her neighbour a carton of cigarettes and helping to advance her emphyse-

ma.

“My crime is that I quit smoking the wrong way,” she told the hearing.

Drug reform advocate Alex Wodak, director of the St Vincent’s Hospital alcohol and drug service, said e-cigarettes were far safer and cheaper than cigarettes, describing them as a “significant economic boon” to smokers as well as taxpayers.

He dismissed claims that legalising nicotine vaping would encourage smoking.

New Nicotine Alliance, a not-for-profit group that advocates nicotine products as a safe alternative to smoking, said existing laws were protecting big tobacco companies.

The penalties for importing and using liquid nicotine are similar to possession of heroin in some states, they say.

Legalising nicotine e-cigarettes could make smoking obsolete, save lives, earn the government more tax revenue and slash health costs.

“This goes far beyond the nanny state, this is the monstrous state,” president Dr Attila Danko said.

Twins had different fathers A scientist and state media say Vietnam has identified an extremely rare set of bi-paternal twins, or twins with different fathers. Professor Le Dinh Luong, president of the Genetic Association of Vietnam, says DNA testing at his Hanoi lab confirmed the twins have different fathers, the first such case that he knows of in Vietnam, with only seven such cases reported in the world as of 2011. Online newspaper Dan Tri reported that a 34-year-old man from northern Hoa Binh province had DNA testing after being pressured by his family because the twins did not look alike. One has thick wavy hair while the other has thin and straight hair. To rule out a hospital mix-up, DNA testing of the mother showed that she was the mother of both children, the report said. The twins who are now two years old were born the same day and have same sex, it said.

Guilty, there was no other verdict Sue Newman

I

n most people’s minds the verdict was a foregone conclusion, but the justice system must be seen to be fair to everyone involved, the victims and even the offenders who may be clearly guilty of their crime.

And so it has been in the trial of Russell John Tully, the man who yesterday was found guilty of killing two Ashburton Work and Income staff members.

Since that tragic event in September 2014, the New Zealand justice system has been slowly and more-than-fairly winding its way towards what most saw as a logical conclusion. Guilty.

Thousands of hours, probably millions of dollars and endless heartache for the families involved and the trial wrapped up yesterday, but not before the jury had spent seven hours deliberating. And while their job might have appeared an easy one, the decision clear-cut, it was anything but.

Evidence might have been indisputable that Tully shot and killed two women, but what appears not to have been so clear was whether he attempted to murder two others. And it was on that issue that the jury deliberated at length.

Their job would not have been an easy one. While a jury is constantly reminded that they must keep apart from any discussion, debate or emotion that swirls around a trial, the reality is it is impossible not to be aware of the mood of a courtroom or a community.

And regardless of how clearcut a case may be, those jurors still have to apply the ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ rule.

The Tully trial became something of a circus with the disruptive defendant removed from court for most of the proceedings. Because of that it will go down in history as one of the country’s most unusual, a trial where the accused was absent.

Tully will be sentenced in about four weeks, but the guilty plea delivered yesterday will bring a much-longed-for kind of closure for the families involved.

Life will never return to the way it was pre-September 2014 for any of them, but at least they can now slowly move forward without the knowledge that a very public re-living of the tragedy was still to be played out in court.

The ugly situation is that where those with money can buy the drug they need to live, while those with no money die as a result of National preferring to reduce tax for the wealthy who can afford the life-saving experimental drug Keytruda, rather than fund Pharmac appropriately.

The prime minister says the Government he leads will increase Pharmac’s funding so the cost to citizens purchasing prescriptions remains the same when the increased cost of medicines, resulting from our signing of the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement, comes into force.

Now he tries to suggest his new-found largesse is to allow Pharmac to fund a melanoma fighting medicine.

Blaming cash-strapped Pharmac for the lack of a publicly-funded melanoma medicine is wrong; the mean-spirited Government, not Pharmac, is to blame.

Trump revealed

R

ecent media intelligence suggests Donald Trump’s famed “university” never existed beyond being a collecting house for exorbitant “fees” that were never honoured.

If such allegations are true and Mr Trump is engaged in the defence of nefarious, potentially fraudulent, business transactions – when not actually screaming abuse at his Republican presidential rivals – it’s hard to see how he can continue as the Republican frontrunner for the presidency of the United States.

Surely, even in “the land of the free”, legal correctness still stands for something.

Is this therefore, not the “let out” clause that will enable the Republican hierarchy to declare the candidate persona non grata as far as representing the grand old party is concerned. Or is “the Trump” able to surmount this hurdle too, as he has so far with all the others that might have led supporters to believe him unelectable?

Conventional wisdom would indicate that should Trump yet become the Republican nominee, he will be mown down by Hillary Clinton on election day, November 8, 2016, although nothing can be taken for granted in this so far highly unusual American political drama.

revolting rhetoric of Mr Trump will see Mrs Clinton gain lengthy access to the White House, the fact that she will be the first woman to do so almost forgotten in the feeling of relief amongst “straight-thinking” Americans there was, in the end, such a wellqualified alternative to turn to, gender not an issue.

Before that moment of national – and international – rejoicing arrives and America, just in time, shows it has not, after all, entirely lost its senses, Messrs Cruz and Rubio, presumably, will have to continue to slug it out with the well-known university founder, golf club and helicopter owner and “world champion” entrepreneur, until their powder runs dry and out and even the exhausted television audiences call it a day.

By comparison, our elections are staid affairs, allowing even for the idiosyncratic system of MMP, which has had such an earthmoving influence on the body politic since it was first incorporated into it in 1996.

It wouldn’t though preclude entirely the emergence of a Kiwi Donald Trump – or possibly a lookalike – but, at this precise moment in time there seems to not be such a person on the New Zealand political horizon.

There might be would-be Trumps in our electoral mix nearer the time, but I don’t see them getting far.

What’s more, although such people might be enthused by the prospect of campaigning under a new flag, I doubt whether it would make much difference.

Meanwhile, the flag debate grinds on.

The “celebs” are doing their bit, coming up with a series of shrill tweets and Facebook shrieks emphasising the “old-hattedness” of the present standard and how much more effective and representative the silver fern would be.

Despite their strident endeavours, however, they still have far too few adherents to effect a change by the end of this month.

Mr Key does not seem too fazed by this lack of support for his “ego” project, though, as we are well aware by now, he has turned “not looking fazed by anything” into an art form. So it still looks as if the Union Jack will be flapping bravely on all government buildings and over our team at Rio in August after the referendum ends in a couple of weeks.

Finally, Martin Crowe, a sometimes “tortured soul” we are told, but always a wonderful cricketer and an inspiration to all of us lucky enough to see him batting.

New Zealand has never had a better batsman and there haven’t been many worldwide either to hold a candle to him.

Personally, I feel strongly his Kiwi mates should be at his funeral in Auckland on Friday rather than playing golf at the Michael Hill course in Arrowtown on that day.

In an exciting parliamentary development yesterday, National and Labour – with beaming unions looking on – agreed to scrap zero-hour contracts whereby workers remain at the beck and call of employers regardless of whether or not the said employers have work for them to do.

The Government found itself short of numbers when its partners, the Maori Party and United Future, declined to support the relevant provision in the upcoming legislation so, reluctantly, accepted the need to change.

Any sort of general agreement in the House is a cause for some incredulity, but always welcome nevertheless.

National may have tried to smother the event with weasel words and shoulder shrugs, but all the same the “meeting of minds” is there for all to see.

Vegetables on the barbecue plate These easy and tasty vegetables add plenty of colour and texture to barbecued steaks.

Suggestions: ■ Potatoes: Slice general purpose potatoes into 1/2 cm thick slices, brush with oil, turn once during cooking. Cook for 15-20 minutes.

■ Courgette halves: Split courgettes in half lengthways and place on the barbecue. Baste sparingly with oil and turn frequently during cooking.

■ Eggplant slices: While slices are cooking, brush generously with oil. Cook for 5-10 minutes.

■ Kumara: Slice into 1/2 cm thick slices and brush with oil. Turn only once during cooking. Cook for 10-12 minutes.

■ Capsicums: Cut lengthways into quarters. Remove seeds. Brush sparingly with oil, place on a hot barbecue plate and turn fre-

quently during cooking.

■ Onion wedges or rings: Peel and cut onions into wedges or rings.

Separate layers, brush sparingly with oil. Using a solid barbecue plate stir fry for 4-5 minutes or until golden and softened.

■ Tomato halves: Cut tomatoes in half and place face down on the barbecue plate. Cook for about 3-4 minutes or until heated through. Turn over and sprinkle with pepper or fresh herbs. Remove from heat, serve immediately.

■ Other vegetables: Fresh asparagus, snow peas, green beans, yams and scallopini, can be cooked on the barbecue. Some only require a brief cooking time, depending on how hot the barbecue plate is.

Chows buy Stonewood Homes

The Chow Brothers (Michael and John) and corporate finance specialist Clint Webber have bought the troubled Stonewood Homes business assets. for the announcement.

“Stonewood complements our office, retail, accommodation, and car park property portfolio,” Chow said.

Card spending up in February New Zealand retail spending on electronic cards rose for a 10th straight month in February, led by an increase in consumables such as food and liquor.

Retail spending rose 0.7 per cent, seasonally adjusted, in February from January and actual sales in the month were up 9.3 per cent to $4.64 billion compared with February 2015, Statistics New Zealand said.

Core retail spending, which excludes vehicle-related industries, rose 1.2 per cent, mainly reflecting the decline in petrol prices, with fuel spending down 2.1 per cent.

Consumers became less confident in February, based on the ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Index, which slipped back down to its historical average, although economists said overall sentiment was still reasonably robust.

A slight dimming of confidence comes amid signs some of the steam is coming out of Auckland’s overheated housing market, although consumers still have access to cheap credit.

The receivers said 110 houses were unfinished, unsecured creditors were owed about $15 million and the company employed 85 staff.

Adult entertainment and real estate specialists the Chow brothers and another investor have bought the national franchise rights for one of New Zealand’s largest home builders, Stonewood Homes.

An announcement outlining details of the deal was made public yesterday.

“Property magnates the Chow Brothers and corporate finance specialist Clint Webber have bought the troubled Stonewood Homes business assets – third largest house building company in NZ – both the national franchise rights and the Christchurch franchisee – from receivers KordaMentha for an undisclosed sum,” a statement said.

“The Chow brothers have a proven business track record, having built a $200 million portfolio of commercial buildings in Auckland, Wellington and Rotorua in just 18 years with 200 employees working for the group between Auckland Wellington,” it said.

English rules out backing loans

Finance Minister Bill English has ruled out any bail-outs or backing of loans for the ailing dairy sector, but said he would increase support in science and innovation.

In a Radio New Zealand interview Mr English conceded the sector was in a serious or extreme situation, but he believed the banks would maintain their longer-term confidence.

Mr English said it was “pretty much certain” land values would decrease particularly with at least one more tough season in front of them.

“I don’t think there is any doubt that this is an industry that has had a focus on growing equity and growing land values for quite a long time.

It’s going to be a significant adjustment to getting back to the core business of effective farming for cashflow.”

However, Labour finance spokesperson Grant Robertson was scathing of Mr English’s comments – saying he had acted like a “bewildered bystander with no idea what to do”.

Mr Robertson said even established families were going to the wall with commentators describing the debts involved as “toxic”.

Reserve Bank modelling shows 44 per cent of famers could default on their loans, he said.

“That’s 5000 farmers with a huge flow-on effect to their communities.”

Mr Robertson said the Government’s finance minister should take responsibility for downplaying the risk from the global milk glut for two years.

Minister of Finance Bill English is ruling out backing loans.

“Mr English says loan defaults will be up to the banks and industry to handle. That’s not good enough. If 44 per cent of the farmers default, banks will have no choice but to foreclose. Many of those farms could be sold overseas.”

The time for standing still was over, he said. “It’s likely the dairy

problems will flow through to the rest of the economy with business confidence set to take a hit.”

He urged the Government to be an active partner in supporting farmers and the communities around them to get through the tough times and to build a sustainable regional economy.

Alliance Group branded Pure South frozen lamb is now being sold by Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona under a new supply agreement.

So far more than 3000 tonnes of mainly shoulders and cutlets have been sold to the chain which operates 1400 stores, employs 7000 people and has 26.5 per cent of the Spanish food market. Its annual turnover is $33 billion.

Lamb is typically bought by middle class Spaniards and barbecued.

Spain has a population of about 47 million and on average Spaniards eat 2.8kg of lamb a person a year.

■ DELVING INTO HISTORY

Mercedes’ milestone Bernard Egan MOTORING

I

t’s almost 15 years since the current series of motoring pages appeared in this paper.

From time to time we’ve been prompted to delve back into the annals of motoring, perhaps prompted to do so when readers with older vehicles have shared their interest with us, or perhaps

because of significant anniversaries of different makes or models.

Whenever this occurs I’m prompted to think of my former history teacher Brian Edmondston who I think sometimes reads these columns.

Without meaning to sound conceited, Brian usually agrees with my interpretation of history, which in turn I hope he regards as a good result from his efforts to make the subject and our lessons interesting.

He certainly did that!

Mind you by publicly acknowledging the lasting impression he made on so many of his pupils, I may not be doing Brian a favour.

Being a keen Rotarian he may well cop it from the Sergeant each time his name appears in this

prestigious publication!

While admitting no liability I can only hope it feels any fine is worth it!

History has cropped up again.

One of if not the most significant event in motoring occurred 130 years ago when on January 29, 1886 Karl Benz applied to the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin for the most significant patent of the industrial age: a “motorised vehicle powered by a gas engine” – the initial idea behind many automobile designs.

One hundred and thirty years later, almost to the day, MercedesBenz was in “Motown” – Detroit – to show the new E-Class, the car

with the technological capability to revolutionise mobility all over again.

Reflecting the vision of Karl Benz, the company which bears his name says “the best is still to come for our cars”.

Mercedes Benz say in future their cars will not only drive with zero emissions, but autonomously, too. They will be even safer, even more luxurious and fully networked as well.

A comfortable retreat for the journey between office and home – a place to work, communicate, relax and enjoy.

No doubt Karl Benz would be pleased.

Formula One a multi-billion dollar industry F

ormula One is wheel-spinning in loot.

Teams gathered a combined NZ$1.96 billion in revenue during the 2014 season but Forbes magazine who compiled the information, claimed teams had a combined net loss of NZ$498 million.

Neither Ferrari nor Sauber filed statements but Forbes estimated if they had, the total Formula One revenue would have pushed towards NZ$2.2 billion.

The Williams team was the highest earner with NZ$187m while Force India was down at the tail with NZ$126m in revenue, however that was a huge 26.8 per cent increase on their previous year.

New sponsors have been wary of committing to Formula One but Forbes said the sport has been able to keep high revenue tallies because the sport continued to appeal to the bulk of its shareholders.

Sponsorship was still the biggest financial boost for the teams, ahead of prizemoney and the private investment from owners.

While figures are high several teams went into receivership.

Manor and Caterham had combined

debts of NZ$185m after their switch from V8 engines to a hybrid V6 engine proved to be a massive strain on the team finances.

Costs have soared with Mercedes boss Toro Wolff saying the new hybrid power units added another 15-20 per cent onto costs. Many would love to see the sport revert to the cheaper V8 horsepower, but those pleas have gone unheeded.

Revenue continues to rise but profits are not keeping pace, giving a stronger push to arguments that the sport has to change to stay both popular and commercially viable.

Legendary and exciting marque

Stanaway focused on GT arena

L

ate last year Bruce and Audrey Leath shared their enthusiasm for Jaguars with

us.

Their story coincided with the 80th anniversary of the first Jaguar car.

Jaguars came along 50 years after Karl Benz registered his famous patent.

But in fact the Jaguar company can trace its history back more than 80 years.

That’s because the legendary William (later Sir William) had established a partnership with William Walmsley manufacturing Swallow brand motorcycle sidecars.

The company became known as Swallow Sidecars which was abbreviated to SS. In time they ventured into designing and making Swallow bodies, which were fitted to running gear provided by other automobile manufacturers including Austin.

When William Walmsley retired Sir William Lyons continued the business.

In 1935 after producing a variety of Swallow and SS vehicles the Jaguar name was introduced along with the legendary emblem and badge depicting the sleek, fast animal which epitomised the style, grace and performance of the cars being produced.

Sidecars were still manufactured, especially during World War 2 when the company concentrated on military production for the war effort.

After the war Jaguar set about establishing themselves as builders of quintessentially British sports cars and sporting saloons.

Jaguar soon

made a name for themselves both as manufacturers of upmarket cars and on race tracks where their cars were often driven by leading racing drivers.

They notched up numerous big-race successes.

Sir William Lyons, who remained with the company until his retirement, was a determined man, driven by his dream of producing quality cars.

He steered the company through and around many hurdles and sometimes through hard times, mergers and acquisitions.

Throughout its history Jaguar has become renowned for producing legendary and exciting cars.

In more recent years ownership of the Jaguar company has changed, but the name

remains as an iconic symbol of the spirit of British motoring heritage and like other manufacturers they continue to introduce new technology, some of which seems almost mind boggling.

Ray and Ruth Logan are among several local Jaguar enthusiasts.

They kindly lent me some fabulous books about Jaguar which have been the source of this brief history and provided some fascinating reading.

Speaking of historical events, it’s almost one year ago to the day since the Logans and some other locals staged a fabulous Jaguar rally here in Ashburton.

And speaking of rallies last weekend our motoring colleague Roger Hart and well known motoring enthusiast Gary Hawke took part in a New Zealand AJS and Matchless Owners’ Club “jam pot” rally.

Say that again, jam pot?

Now both these gentleman have significant culinary skills, but without meaning to sound in any way disrespectful we are not absolutely sure their talents extend to making jam.

being the talented guys they are we wouldn’t be surprised if in fact they do produce top-class condiments.

Jam pot in fact refers to the rear suspension on some AJS and Matchless models, and has become a symbol for the owners club, its magazine and its activities.

Annual jam pot rallies take place in New Zealand, alternating between the Mainland and the North Island.

This year’s event took place around the Ohoka district in North Canterbury, taking in interesting and scenic routes in that area.

Roger rode the Hart family AJS, which is now 86 years old.

He said the bike (ed: and the rider too) did well although some of the bumpy roads meant a few things shook and shuddered a bit.

We presume Roger was referring mainly to the bike!

Likewise Gary’s older model machine performed well and along with about 60 other riders they had a great time.

It was a somewhat poignant ride for Roger because many years ago when his bike was much younger his dad Johnny regularly rode it along some of the same roads when commuting from Christchurch to Ohoka for work.

Gary Hawke is one and the same person we quoted once for trying to persuade his wife Shirley that he should have three bikes rather than two.

His argument was that if he had three bikes he would not be leaving one at home alone while out riding another one.

History!

Karl Benz started something, Jaguar added to it, Roger and Gary relived it and our teacher Brian Edmondston said it’s interesting.

He is right!

auranga racing driver Richie Stanaway has put his total focus on FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) GT racing in 2016.

The double GP2 Series race winner in 2015 said a fully competitive single-seater drive wasn’t available to him in 2016, so he’s looking to further develop his skills and reputation in the GT arena.

It will be his fourth year on the factory driver roster for Aston Martin Racing and Stanaway sees benefit in being completely focused on a development programme with Aston Martin’s substantially upgraded Vantage V8 endurance racer and the bespoke Dunlop tyres the team will race on in 2016.

Stanaway, 24, is teamed with Brazilian driver Fernando Rees and Scotland’s Jonny Adam in one of two Aston Martin Racing GTEPro entries for the nine-round FIA World Endurance Championship which starts in April. He’ll also drive a factory Aston Martin Vantage V12 Richie Stanaway GT3 car at the Nurburgring 24 Hours in May and race at the Sebring 12 Hours in Florida later this month.

“It’s best for me to focus on one programme because I have been doing multiple programmes for the last three years,” Stanaway said during a short trip home to Tauranga.

“When you diversify it can take energy and focus away from each programme. So my focus is solely on WEC this year. I’ve had a year in GP2 but there wasn’t any point doing it again unless I could have progressed in terms of team performance, which wasn’t an option for me.”

CLUB NEWS Ashburton Bowling Club Congratulations to the winners of the junior and senior men’s champions.

Brenton Donaldson defeated Russell Lowe 22-5 in the juniors and Murray Anderson had a 26 end battle against Colin Dennis to win the Seniors 21-13.

On one end there was 5 touches but the result was reduced to 1 shot.

Both games were played in great sporting spirit.

Congrats also go to Diane Gutberlet and her team of Diana King, Gaynor Crack and Gillian Kelly for winning the Sub Centre 4’s finals. Good luck to all in the finals in Christchurch.

Sponsors ditch Sharapova Nike and other sponsors have swiftly distanced themselves from Maria Sharapova after the world’s highest-earning female athlete outed herself as a longtime user of a recently banned drug.

Swiss watch brand Tag Heuer and German luxury car company Porsche quickly followed the sportswear giant, suspending their support of the five-time Grand Slam winner after she announced on Monday that she failed a drug test for meldonium at the Australian Open in January, days after the substance was banned.

Many other athletes have attacked the messenger, challenged the results or blamed others after being confronted privately by positive tests for banned drugs.

Sharapova went public instead, taking full responsibility and effectively throwing herself at the mercy of the International Tennis Federation.

“I know that with this, I face consequences,” Sharapova said, waving away a question that invited her to blame her doctor or someone else on her team.

“I have to take full responsibility because it’s my body and it’s what I put into my body and I can’t blame anyone but myself,” she said. “At the end of the day everything you do is about you.”

The former world No. 1 could face a lengthy ban, possibly ending her season and preventing her from competing for Russia at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Much more costly would be losing the advertising revenue that has made her the top earning female athlete for 11 straight years, according to Forbes.

“We have decided to suspend our relationship with Maria while the investigation continues,” Nike said in a statement.

Industry veterans were surprised by how quickly these companies backed away from such a bankable performer. Sharapova earned an estimated $29.5 million last year alone, the vast ma-

jority off the court.

“She’s a one-woman marketing machine,” said Nigel Currie, a British-based sponsorship consultant.

But marketers have become more sensitive to doping scandals after the public denials of athletes such as Lance Armstrong or Barry Bonds, especially in the age of social media.

“Waiting around makes a brand look indecisive,” said branding expert Allen Adamson, founder of Brand Simple Consulting.

“When in doubt, you don’t want to be connecting your brand with

an athlete who has not played by the rules.”

Still, none of Sharapova’s sponsors have cut ties altogether, and other athletes have rebounded from scandals: Nike stuck with Tiger Woods after he apologised for cheating on his wife, and welcomed back Michael Vick after he served time for an illegal dog fighting ring.

Though Sharapova did a “textbook” job of owning up to her mistake, questions linger, including whether she listed the drug among her medications when she was tested in Australia, said Paul Swangard, a sports marketing lecturer.

Answering those questions could determine how quickly Sharapova, 28, can return to competition, which would be her best way of quickly rebuilding her image, Swangard added. “If she is banned at the age that she is at, she might not have a chance to use her playing ability to rebuild her credibility.”

Sharapova has dropped to No. 7 in the WTA rankings, and due to injuries, she has played just three tournaments and the Fed Cup final in the last eight months.

This raises the possibility that sponsors may have acted quickly in part because her brand isn’t as strong now, said Manish Tripathi, an assistant professor of marketing.

“If she was playing the way Serena Williams is playing right now, Nike wouldn’t have acted this quickly,” Tripathi said.

The World Anti-Doping Agency banned meldonium starting this year because it aids oxygen uptake and endurance. Sharapova, who said she has taken meldonium for 10 years for health issues, said she neglected to click on a link in a late December email to check the new list of banned substances.

Kearney calls for calm over Warriors Stephen Kearney expects the Warriors to rebound this weekend and says critics of the Auckland team have pushed the “panic button” too early.

The reaction to their Warriors’ surprise 34-26 loss to the Tigers has been fierce, with many pundits slating the team for their timid, error ridden display.

But Kearney, who has a unique insight as both Kiwis coach and Broncos assistant coach, is calling for some perspective. He points out that the Broncos were beaten 36-6 by the Rabbitohs to open the season last year, before going on to have their best campaign since 2006.

“It’s round one,” Kearney told Radio Sport. “The panic button has been hit a bit too prematurely there. The Roosters, who have won three [consecutive] preliminary finals, got beaten last weekend by 40-odd points. I know the calibre of the players in the Warriors team and I expect nothing short of their best performance this weekend.”

Of course, Kearney would be reluctant to criticise the Warriors; there are so many of his Kiwi players at the Mt Smart club, and in his Broncos role he is too smart to offer any ammunition to the opposition ahead of a game.

But he seems genuine in his belief that the Warriors will improve, starting tomorrow.

“We are under no illusions that off the back of the criticism last week they will come out very determined and ready for a real challenge,” said Kearney. “We’re expecting that.”

Aside from the porous defence, another big issue from last Saturday was the lack of cohesion and spark from the Warriors new allstar spine, with Shaun Johnson, Issac Luke and Roger TuivasaSheck well below their best.

“It’s always going to take a little bit of time to get used to each other and you can’t replicate that at training,” said Kearney. “It’s only when you are under pressure in game situations. They’ll be better for the experience [and] you could see they were better in the second half. I’m sure they will start to hit their straps soon - I just hope it is not on Friday night.”

Asked about Graham Lowe’s assertions about the Warriors ‘bro culture’, Kearney was reluctant to comment.

“I’m not going to give that too much life,” said Kearney. “I’m not 100 per cent sure what that is myself so I am not going to put any energy into it.”

Kearney also confirmed his intention to stick with Simon Mannering as Kiwis captain, even though the back rower has stepped down as skipper at the Warriors.

“It doesn’t change my way of thinking and his leadership role with the team.”

In brief Marshall’s worth more Believing he’s still worth a whole lot more, Benji Marshall has laughed off St George Illawarra’s offer of a $300,000 contract extension. The one-time world player of the year is a free agent at the end of the 2016 season but is keen to remain in the NRL for at least a 13th campaign. But he has no plans on staying put at the Dragons if $300,000 is all they can stump up. “I think what I’ve got to offer this year is going to be more than that and off the field adds to that probably as well,” Marshall said. “So that’s probably not a good figure ... I had a bit of a chuckle (when I heard that).”

Pearce owes mates Mitchell Pearce is eager to make amends with his Sydney Roosters teammates after returning to training for the first time this week since his Australia Day drama, according to skipper Jake Friend.

Suspended for the first eight matches of the NRL season due to the incident, Pearce returned to Roosters training on Monday.

Friend said yesterday, Pearce knew he had to make it up to his teammates who opened the season with a 42-10 loss to South Sydney on Sunday.

The competition runs over two grades and entering is as simple as just turning up on the night.

Weekly prizes are up for grabs and the competition runs in fiveweek clusters, with prizes award-

ed for the best four scores out of five over those weeks.

While most competitors are men, last year’s competition attracted five women who were quite competitive, Mr Dunn said.

Last year almost half of those taking part in the weekly event

were newcomers to the sport.

“It’s amazing to see people who weren’t that great at the game get a bit of coaching and really improve,” he said.

The MSA’s weekly pool competition begins on Tuesday at 6.30pm.

West in, Tuipulotu out for Blues Ihaia West is back in the No10 jersey for the Blues, but coach Tana Umaga has again made several bold selection changes for the match against the Hurricanes by dropping lock Patrick Tuipulotu and moving Rene Ranger to the right wing.

Umaga has stuck with his policy of shaking things up following last week’s six changes. This week he has made nine and said Tuipulotu’s demotion to the reserves bench - he is replaced in the No 4 jersey by loose forward Steven Luatua - was down to form.

“It’s about rewarding performance,” Umaga said. “Patrick would be the first to say that he didn’t play his best game [against the Crusaders] and it’s tough for Pat because he hasn’t had a lot of rugby in the last 12 months and has played every game for us [this season].

“We know what we’re going to get with Pat coming off the bench now - a motivated Patrick is good for us.”

The dropping of Tuipulotu after the Blues were destroyed up front by the Crusaders is likely to send a message to the entire squad that below-par performances will not be tolerated by Umaga. The selections of Ioane and Faumuina also strengthen the pack considerably and with Hall and West running the show again the backline is likely to play with more composure against the Hurricanes.

Umaga admitted his team didn’t cope with the pressure the Crusaders exerted and that his players had to be able to adapt quicker.

“At stages we will be put un-

der pressure and it’s how we deal with the pressure on the field,” he said. “It’s great to be able to look at that after, but it’s about how we make the shifts on the field.

We’ve been working hard at that.”

Skipper Jerome Kaino said being successful again at Eden Park after his team’s round one win over the Highlanders was crucial.

“That’s part of our motivation this year - to get people believing in Blues rugby again,” he said.

Kurtley Beale is reportedly set to sign a record two-year deal worth $2.7 million with the London Wasps, according to the Daily Mail.

Such a deal is unlikely to be matched by the Australian Rugby Union even if Beale enters into a flexible deal which allows him to play in Japan. AIS wins tight inter-school battle Ashburton Intermediate pulled off an eight-run win over Mount Hutt College in the Mid Canterbury round of the Action Post Cup tournament yesterday.

The Year 7 and 8 game was hosted by Ashburton at McLean Park and the home side compiled 118 thanks to good knocks

Mount Hutt’s best bowlers were Gus Casey-Solley 3-22 and James Robinson 2-14.

In reply, the Methven boys came excitingly close to beating Intermediate’s total, but were all out for 110, just eight runs short. William Hayden top scored with 40 and Sam Cuttle put on 31.

Jack Gibson was Intermediate’s chief destroyer, taking 3-7.

Ashburton Intermediate acting principal Judy Jemmett said parents from both teams turned up in support and one lucky class was allowed to head over to McLean Park to take in a bit of the action.

Ashburton Intermediate will now face off against Waihi School in the next round of the Action Post Cup, the date of the match is yet to be confirmed.

Ryan Fox will have Crowe on his mind Ryan Fox will be thinking of former family friend and mentor Martin Crowe when he tees off in the New Zealand Open in Queenstown today.

The former New Zealand cricket captain passed away last week following a long struggle with Lymphoma and a service is being held in Auckland on Friday.

Crowe was great friends with Fox’s father Grant, the former All Blacks 1987 World Cup winning five-eighth, and he mentored Ryan as a young cricketer before supporting him and taking a strong interest in his golfing career.

“I’ve known Marty pretty much my whole life and he helped me when I was a young cricketer at school and I learned a lot from that,” said Fox. “Unfortunately my head probably kept me out of being a decent batsman but I’ve got fond memories of playing golf with him and fond memories of being mentored by him and I’ll certainly be thinking of him on Friday.”

Fox recounted a favourite memory of Crowe from an unhappy afternoon on the golf course, where he unleashed what he describes as “the best shot I ever saw off a putter.”

“I played a lot of golf with him when I was an amateur and when he was well and he loved his golf,” he said.

“This time he couldn’t do it because he wasn’t here sadly. But I’m thinking of him and I know Ryan is too.”

Ashburton College golfer Brent Kirdy is one step closer to fulfilling his dream of playing in the United States after impressing in trials at Christchurch Golf Club last month.

Kirdy was invited to trials for Year 8 to Year 13 students by Australian scouting company Na-

tional Scouting Reporter (NSR).

NSR evaluate and promote young athletes to more than 2500 colleges throughout the US, and hosted the recent trials in conjunction with New Zealand Golf.

At just 15, Kirdy will have to wait until 2019 for his dream of studying stateside to materialise.

But the Year 11 student, who has a handicap of eight and

hopes to study finance, insisted the next three years will be put to good use in ensuring he can match his future counterparts.

“I want to reduce my handicap, a lot of them will be on a lower handicap,” he said.

“So I want to improve my short game, putting and chipping.”

The process of finding the institution that suits Kirdy best will

depend on both the university golf programme’s coach, and his academic prowess.

“It actually depends fully on the coaches over there, whether they want to take me on,” he said.

“They’ll (NSR) send several coaches my reports and if they think I’m suitable for the programme they will accept me, and

then it can be narrowed down for me to pick which one.”

He may not know which college he is headed to yet, or even which state, but Kirdy is certain that he will make the most of his experience in the land of opportunity.

“My dream is to become a professional golfer and this is another step,” he said.

Deans going south?

Former Crusaders and Wallaby coach Robbie Deans has emerged as a dark horse candidate to take over the Highlanders next season.

Deans - famously rejected as the All Blacks coach after the 2007 World Cup - could take over when Jamie Joseph leaves the 2015 champions to take up his new post in Japan.

Southern rugby commentator Paul Allison told Radio Sport’s Crowd Goes Wild Breakfast while

Joseph’s assistant Tony Brown is widely regarded as the frontrunner, there are suggestions Brown is not sure if he is ready for a head coaching role yet.

Allison’s sources claimed Deans was an “interested spectator” at the Highlanders v Waratahs warm-up match in Queenstown last month as part of “this whole recruitment process”.

Allison said he was relying on smoke signals.
