Call for crackdown on cyberbullying BY DAISY HUDSON

A local lawyer has called for a crackdown on cyberbullies after a child was named and shamed by adults on Facebook. A post on an Ashburton-based Facebook group sparked a heated discussion online over the weekend after a parent posted the name and age of a child that had allegedly bullied their son. The post prompted a flurry of comments both supporting and slamming the move. While there are legal avenues that can be pursued against online defamation and harassment, for Ashburton lawyer Greg Martin the issue is more of a moral one.
“The law probably isn’t as strong as it should be, in terms of protecting people from being victimised by that kind of malicious behaviour,” he said. “Ultimately New Zealand is supposed to be a fair and just society and if you say something about somebody on Facebook, the other person is often not getting the chance to respond.” Mr Martin described bullying on social media as “the law of the jungle”, which he believes does not have any place in a civilised society. He said people needed to be aware that what they posted online could have consequences in the real world. Local principals have also weighed in, saying they are disappointed the dispute ended up on social media. Ashburton Intermediate School
principal Gavin Cooper said people may not realise the consequences of posting on social media. He likened social media to a bathroom wall, as people could write things anonymously and without accountability. Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan said he could fully understand how parents were protective of their children, but posting online was not the right way to solve the issue. “It clearly has the potential to make things much, much worse,” he said.
