Snow promises $8m BY SUSAN SANDYS
SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Snow falling on Mt Hutt overnight has put smiles on the faces of Methven hospitality operators as they ready for an expected $8 million ski season. A lack
of snow meant the ski area was unable to open last weekend. Up to 40 centimetres could fall by the end of today, and Mt Hutt management plan to open as soon as the storm passes, which could be as early as Thursday. Rainy and warm conditions delayed the scheduled opening of last Saturday, however Methven operators are confident it has not dente d
the $8 million windfall the town expects to receive this ski season. Brinkley Resort owner operator Paul Creswick said Mt Hutt management had been “right on the money” calling the opening date one week earlier than last year, despite the unscheduled delay. He was pleased Mt Hutt was gearing to open as soon as the storm passed, initially having heard it would not open until Saturday. As well as bringing their opening date forward, Mr Creswick would like to see management extend the season by one week as well. The later-thanscheduled opening had not resulted
in any lost bookings. Experience Mid Canterbury general manager Nigel Birt agreed the delay of just a few days had not been a big loss to Methven or the surrounding district. The ski season had been scheduled to open earlier than usual this year anyway, and he doubted it had resulted in any cancellations. Mr Birt said a conservative economic benefit to the Methven area, excluding non-commercial accommodation and the spend on Mt Hutt, was $8 million. Ski area manager James McKenzie said yesterday at about 3.30pm that eight centimetres of snow had fallen. Another 30 centimetres could fall over the next 24 hours.
