Town’s roading budget safe

Ashburton’s roading teams believe they’ve avoided the fund paring knife that the NZ Transport Agency is taking to some local body roading budgets.

Selwyn District is counting the cost of lost projects in more than $5 million after a meeting with NZTA this week saw three projects cut from its funding list.

NZTA was prioritising the long list of projects local authorities had put on the subsidy list to meet the funding allocated for the next three years.

Ashburton District Council service delivery manager Neil McCann said he did not have the same concerns for Ashburton as staff had elected not to put any projects on what is known as the ‘enhanced’ list.

Those projects can attract a subsidy of up to 70 per cent but they need to be of high importance both to the local authority area and the regional economy, McCann said.

The council’s three-year roading maintenance programme that attracts a 51 per cent subsidy had already been

signed off by NZTA and staff had decided there were no projects that could be put into the enhanced funding pool.

Regular meetings were held between NZTA and the council, he said.

Replacement bridges over the RDR was considered, he said, but staff decided these would likely be seen as low priority by NZTA. The stalled Selwyn projects were described as being essential for safety and efficiency and a list of all cancelled projects is likely to be annouonced at the end of this month.

New community magistrate

The Ashburton District Court now has the assistance of a new community magistrate to help ease the workload on sitting judges.

Sally O’Brien, one of two new Christchurch-based community magistrates, sat in the Ashburton court for the first time last week dealing with mostly drunk drivers.

New Zealand’s acting Chief District Court Judge Denise Clark said community magistrates would now sit in the Ashburton court about once a month to help free up time for district court judges dealing with serious matters.

Community magistrates have been part of the justice system since 1998 and were extended into the South Island three years ago on a pilot basis; O’Brien and Simon Heale became permanently based in Christchurch last November.

“They began sitting in the Dunedin and Invercargill District Courts in early May and are being deployed around other South Island District Courts from time to time to free up district court judges for more serious matters such as jury trials, where volumes dictate,” acting Chief District Court Judge Clark said.

Other centres involved are the Queenstown and Greymouth District Courts.

Nelson and Blenheim are served by a Wellington-based community magistrate.

As well as the South Island, community magistrates currently sit in courts in Northland, Auckland, Manukau, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne, Taranaki, Whanganui, Wellington and Wairarapa.

Community magistrates were first appointed in 1998 to deal

with certain front-line judicial duties in the district court and now number 18. They are parttime judicial officers recruited for their diverse range of skills, experience and perspectives.

They work mostly in the busy list courts, dealing with sentencing of offenders who have pleaded guilty on the day, hearing opposed bail applications and dealing with administrative matters such as taking pleas and remanding defendants for probation, forensic or restorative

justice reports, as well as voluntary alcohol, drug or rehabilitative programmes.

“Community magistrates have become important to the effective and timely administration of justice,” acting Chief District Court Judge Clark said.

“They have proved their worth in the district court and expanding their geographical coverage provides more flexibility for assigning judges into more complex or high-demand areas throughout New Zealand.”

Counterfeit notes still being circulated

Police are still asking businesses to be vigilant after more counterfeit notes have been handed in to police.

Senior sergeant Leigh Jenkins said a $10 note had been handed in to police, and that he understood other notes had appeared in Christchurch.

“It is now just a matter of co-ordinating with the investigators in

Christchurch to determine if the notes were linked,” he said.

A counterfeit $50 note was presented at an Ashburton service station late on the evening of May 20.

“The fake $50 note was presented by “a skinny male Caucasian, with tattoos” about 11.40pm,” he said.

Counterfeit banknotes had been used around Canterbury since April, and the Reserve Bank

issued a warning asking retailers to check banknotes’ security features after up to 50 counterfeits of different values were accepted at businesses over a two-week period.

“People need to check notes they receive over the counter using the look, feel, tilt technique,” said Reserve Bank Head of Banking Steve Gordon at the time.

“These fakes don’t pass any of these tests, which can be done

quickly and easily as money is accepted and put in the till,” he said.

“Looking at a genuine note you should see a window with the bird and value matching what’s on the note, the note and window will feel like plastic and smooth except for the denomination printing, and when you tilt the note a coloured bar will appear to move up and down the smaller printed bird.”

Rental property owners are counting the cost of meeting new heating and insulation standards for their homes in thousands of dollars.

By July 1 all rental properties must have ceiling and underfloor insulation and in addition landlords must ensure each home has adequate heating. Extractor fans must also be installed in bathrooms and kitchens.

And the cost of doing that when you own several rentals is significant, says Ashburton landlord Paul Brake.

“Quite frankly I don’t really want to add it all up but for the insulation to be done properly it’s around $6000 a property,” he said.

Add to that the cost of installing heat pumps and extractor fans and the costs mount up, but recouping those costs through increased rentals is really not an option, Brake said.

“You can’t put your rent up to cover this or you’d have no tenants; the market dictates what you can charge.”

Brake has completed insulation upgrades on all but one of his properties and said that one will be completed by the July 1 deadline.

“A lot of landlords will be behind the eight ball but it will make sure there are warm, dry homes for families. It’s been a pain, but it needs to be done and for us the end’s in sight.”

Two other landlords were in the process of completing insulation on their properties, with one saying she was now waiting for signoff from a certified inspector.

In spite of there being a last-minute rush on insulation material, local suppliers say they are managing to keep up with demand but the pinch point is now finding installers.

Sister Act hits right note

It was a gamble, but it paid off, says Variety Theatre Ashburton production manager Bridget Danielson.

Variety’s 2019 production of Sister Act closed on June 1 after a successful season at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

Danielson said doing the show came with the risk that audiences would not turn out in large numbers, as the musical was not one of the highly popular mainstream shows undertaken in the past such as Grease and Mamma Mia! But as it turned out, Mid Cantabrians flocked to the event centre to fill seats, and each and every night the theatre was almost completely sold out.

“The word got around that it was a good show to see,” said Danielson.

The high standard of the show was down to the cast, led by director Regan Jackson, musical director Jo Castelow and choreographer Jessie Thomson, and the dedicated behindthe-scenes crew.

Variety’s commitment to staging a show each year is measured not only in the countless hours that all these people put in, but also in the financial cost.

Danielson said the budget for Sister Act had been $150,000.

“We need to sell enough tickets to pay the costs, so we can do a show the following year,” she said.

Jackson was equally pleased about the success of the show.

“You always have a vision of what it will look like and it ended up being exactly what I envisioned it to be, which is very satisfying

Next year’s show will be directed by Variety stalwart Gavin Templeton, who has also written the script.

Templeton said It’s Only Rock n Roll Baby will feature iconic hits, ranging from Sweet

Caroline to This Is Me. There would be no dialogue or overall storyline, but the songs would be presented under a range of evocative themes, one called It’s Not Okay Ever, about domestic violence. There would be fun and upbeat sections as well, and audience members were guaranteed to be entertained.

“There will be the songs that everyone knows, loves or hates, but still sings along with every time.”

Templeton said he was looking forward to holding auditions later this year, and presenting the show in May 2020.

From June 1 there is now just one number you will need to get that care, and that is the one you’d use to call your medical centre.

being introduced to reduce confusion about accessing care after-hours in Ashburton.

Unless it is an emergency when you should dial 111, your usual general practice team should be your first port of call when you, or someone in your family, is sick, Guthrie said.

“Even if your practice is closed your call will be answered by a health professional who can

provide health advice, including information about what to do and where to go if you need urgent care.”

The Care Around The Clock campaign has been widely used across Canterbury since 2016 and was created to ensure the community was able to access free and professional health advice 24/7. People who aren’t enrolled with a general practice, or

Matariki celebrated at marae

The Hakatere Marae has been a hive of activity this weekend with celebrations of Maori culture.

On Saturday the third and final session of a kapa haka wananga was held at the marae from 10.30am till 4pm.

Marae komiti member Kate White said the course was open to people of all ages, from children through to adults.

“Some came to all three sessions, mainly the teenagers which was great to see,” she said.

White said the big focus of this wananga was the celebration of Matariki, or maori new year, with many of the attendees staying on to attend Matariki celebrations following the wananga.

“The theme of the day was Matariki, so the songs that they learned were all focused on Matariki,” she said.

White said some who attended the wananga stayed on for the celebrations, and were joined by others attending just

for the celebrations.

“There were different activities such as icing star shaped cookies which the kids loved,” she said.

“A big theme of Matariki is remembrance so we had a wishing tree set up,” White said.

People were either able to put stars on the tree with messages for people they had lost, or they were able to put up their goals for the year ahead.

After the activities were completed, the focus shifted to another aspect of Matariki which is celebrating the end of harvest, with the sharing of kai.

There was also a performance by those who had attended the wananga, singing several waiata along with poi and rakau performances.

White said it was fantastic that the three courses were able to be offered free of charge thanks to the Te Huka Tai Trust.

“To be able to get the skills of the tutors is really good and it is what brings people along,” she said.

Mavis rewarded for top service Wilkins said she was quite emotional when she was informed by letter earlier in the year that she would be receiving the prestigious award. Her mother would have been proud.

She has been an active member for more than 50 years, having joined the Rangitata CWI in 1967. She has held branch and Mid Canterbury positions and her strength in leadership, infectious enthusiasm and organising have been much appreciated.

Wilkins was involved in the publication of the Edna Low Cookbook in 2005 and she is an accomplished craftswoman, flower arranger and skilled cook, ensuring her Lowcliffe WI is always well represented at institute competitions and drama competitions.

Wilkins, a nurse, is involved with the Rural Support Trust and Civil Defence Emergency and was involved with Guides as a Pippins leader for 20 years.

A citation that accompanied the gold badge said: “Mavis is a remarkable individual who has devoted her tine, volunteered her skills and expertise, given her unwavering support and loyalty to NZFWI and Mid Canterbury Federation throughout the district and Canterbury region. Her guidance and support to the members with her kindness, knowledge and unstinting generosity is outstanding”.

Mavis Wilkins was just 15 when her mother took her to her first Women’s Institute meeting. Fifty-two years on, the Lowcliffe woman has just been honoured with a national gold badge.

Wilkins would rather the limelight be on the good work of the Mid Canterbury Federation of WIs, but the organisation she has given so much to says she is a remarkable individual whose kindness, knowledge and generosity is outstanding.

The retired dairy farmer was one of just five women to receive a gold honours badge at the recent national conference in Taupo.

Wilkins says the real work at conference was around how the national body could influence Government action on better water safety education for children and tweaking the free tertiary fees policy so that it applied to Year 2 students who had already demonstrated their ability to study and pass.

But national board member Judy Vaughan, from Ashburton, said there was special time put aside to honour Wilkins and the other four women.

Vaughan was the one charged with verifying Wilkins’ achievements over 52 years as part of the gold badge nomination process. She said it was tricky work that needed to be carried out without raising Wilkins’ suspicions.

Mum took baby clubbing AP A British mum has been slammed by a judge for the “catastrophic” events that led to the death of her four-week-old baby.

A four-week old baby was killed after his mum took him to a nightclub and then drunkenly fell asleep on top of him, a court has heard.

Swansea Crown Court in Wales was told Marina Tilby, 26, went on a night out with her sister on March 31, 2017, where she was seen repeatedly throwing and catching Darian in a nightclub.

After leaving the Sea Horse Inn in New Quay, she took the newborn back to a caravan with three men she had met – and later fell asleep on top of him.

Darian was found unresponsive with blood in his mouth lying next to his mum in the early hours the following morning, the BBC reports.

Tilby was jailed for two years and four months after admitting wilful neglect at Swansea Crown Court, with a judge branding the incident a “dreadful case of maternal selfishness” and slamming the mum for the “deliberate neglect”.

During the hearing, jurors heard how Tilby drank pints of Guinness with sister Lucy Williamson – before drinking bottles of port and gin at a caravan park in New Quay, Wales.

The pair had accepted an invitation to spend the night with three men after meeting in the pub.

Tilby fell asleep at 3.30am – and almost immediately rolled onto little Darian.

Within minutes Lucy noticed and rolled her off but Darian already had blood around his mouth.

Tilby was so heavily under the influence she was unable to be roused from her sleep by her sister, who had also stayed at the caravan, for more than an hour.

Darian was rushed to a local hospital by ambulance, but Tilby was too drunk to go with him.

Police woke her at 5.15am so she could say goodbye to Darian.

Prosecutor Catherine Richards said he suffered a heart attack as a result of Tilby sleeping on top of him, but the prosecution could not prove it.

Louis steals the show at celebrations AP Prince Louis has stolen the show at the Queen’s Trooping the Colour celebrations in London.

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, took turns holding their 13-month old son as the royal family watched the traditional Royal Air Force flyover on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

The smiling toddler looked adorable as he peeked through the window at Buckingham Palace with his older siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, and waved at the crowds on the balcony, before making his public debut.

Royal fans were desperate to see the young royal attend his first public event, following sweet pictures released at Kate’s Chelsea Flower Show garden.

gagement at Trooping the Colour. Princess Charlotte, now four, made her debut in 2016, and her big brother Prince George, now five, in 2015.

The birthday celebration, on June 8, also saw Meghan, Duchess of Sussex taking a break from her maternity leave and returning to official duties.

The event is also the first royal engagement for the duchess, who gave birth just 31 days ago to baby Archie.

She was last seen two days after giving birth, when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex presented Archie to the world. She didn’t attend the recent royal banquet at Buckingham Palace held in honour American President Donald Trump.

I don’t just like cricket, I love it I

t might come with a few late nights and coffee-fueled work days, but it will all be worth it if or when the Black Caps win their first Cricket World Cup. For those who have been living under a rock or who find cricket as exciting as watching a rock, the Cricket World Cup is in full swing in England, and has been an absolute ripper so far.

There has only been one game washed out thanks to miserable English weather, but the rest have produced some great cricket, all helped by a tournament structure that actually makes sense.

Of all the games in the world, I would say that cricket is the

toughest to have a truly even platform.

There are so many different variables that go in to the game, which is why it makes sense that most tours involve a series of games.

Unfortunately, a world cup does not provide that kind of opportunity, and a group-stage based tournament can often

mean one slip and you are gone.

This is where the genius of having a round-robin tournament comes in.

While having to cut the growing nations of Scotland and Ireland from the mix, being able to put 10 teams in to one pool and have them go blow-for-blow against each other is the perfect way of figuring things out.

While the Black Caps could struggle against the spin exponents of the sub-continent or the wicked bounce of the West Indies, we will get the chance to show our strengths against the other nations as well.

All things going well, the Black Caps will make the top four and

the semi-finals just as they did four years ago.

And I hope and cross my fingers they can go all the way and deliver us the trophy at the end of it as well.

It is a question that I have heard being asked a couple of times, but would you rather see us win the Cricket World Cup or the Rugby World Cup? While rugby is a religion around these parts, I want to see the Black Caps win the trophy.

If we were to win the Cricket World Cup, that would do wonders for the game, while another win for the All Blacks would seem run of the mill despite the challenges presented to them so

far this year.

We have always had world class cricketers – Trent Boult, Kane Williamson, Martin Crowe and Richard Hadlee to name a select few, but we have always struggled to put an XI together that are all genuine game-winners.

A win would hopefully inspire the next generation of Ross Taylors and Tim Southees, setting us on the right path to future success.

We are often the underdog at these big sporting events, and you can’t go past an underdog story.

So bring on the long nights and tired days, and hopefully a nice big trophy at the end of it.

ollowing the recent delivery of the coalition Government’s much-hyped “Wellbeing Budget”, in this column I’m going to discuss what wellbeing means and how we measure it.

For the majority of working age people, wellbeing starts with having a good job and being able to afford the basic costs of living.

It means having a health system that meets our expectations and an education system where every child flourishes.

Wellbeing means having safe communities to live in and a roading system that allows us to travel safely and efficiently where we want to go.

It also means ensuring we are taking care of the stunning natural environment we are blessed with.

Every budget is a statement from the government of the day on how it believes it can best use the money it takes from taxpayers to improve the lives of New Zealanders.

It covers the decisions made on investments in core public services like health, education, housing, police and welfare support but also fundamental building blocks like infrastructure, tax and the public service.

To claim this is the first budget to have cared about the wellbeing of New Zealanders is nonsense and frankly insulting to every government that has gone before.

The Government has said that Budget 2019 was the first time that agencies had been asked to work together on shared objectives. Once more that is simply untrue.

From my own time in Cabinet I can think of numerous examples that I was involved in over

many budgets when that was the case.

For instance, the fresh water teams working across Treasury, the Ministry of Primary Industries, the Ministry for the Environment and others to develop a set of national standards for water quality, and the family violence work programme (which this Government has recently announced a continuation of funding for) that involved 12 different government agencies.

There are many more examples.

To me, what really matters in any budget is how the lives of New Zealanders are being improved and how the Government is ensuring we have the economic strength to allow us

to support New Zealanders in future budgets.

Right now what we actually have is the cost of living rising, fewer jobs being created, more people on benefits and in emergency housing, and child poverty stats going backwards, all while the economy slows faster than anyone predicted.

Finally the Government has claimed that for the first time they are not using GDP as the only indicator of success.

This is a remarkable claim from the Government that has removed public reporting of all the previous National-led Government’s targets on things that actually helped measure wellbeing.

These targets tracked important indicators like how long the public has to wait for cancer treatment, how many children are getting NCEA level 2, what the serious crime rate is, and the wait time for public housing.

GDP is important but it has never been the only indicator of success. There is a rewrite of history occurring here that needs to be called out.

For people staying at Christchurch’s Ranui House and Ronald McDonald House, thanks to the efforts Ashburton quilters, that stay will come with some of the comforts of home.

For several years members of the Ashburton Patchwork Club have been making and delivering blankets, quilts, receiving blankets and baby beanies to the two houses and today virtually every bed comes with an Ashburton-made blanket or quilt, member Gael Oldham said.

The project started as a way for members to find an outlet for their creations after they’d met the needs of family and friends.

And because quilts are a long time in the making, they decided to add bordered woollen and flannelette blankets to the mix.

Members are now making patchwork fold-up shopping bags they intend to sell as a fundraiser for Ranui House to build additional accommodation.

The quilts are also used as part of a gift package families receive when they come to the house.

Members of the Ashburton Patchwork Club with a range of quilts and blankets they have created and donated to Christchurch’s Ranui House.

Chicken and leek pie

■■ Place drumsticks in a large, deep frying pan and add water. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 25 minutes.

Remove from heat and leave to cool for 10 minutes.

■■ Transfer drumsticks to a chopping board, reserving the liquid in a heatproof jug. Remove meat from bones and discard the bones. Roughly shred the meat.

■■ Wipe the frying pan clean and melt 60g of the butter over a moderate heat. Add leek and kumara and cook, stirring for 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds or until fragrant.

■■ Sprinkle flour over vegetables.

Cook and stir for 2 minutes or until sauce thickens. Stir in reserved cooking liquid and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and sim-

mer for 3 minutes or until sauce thickens. Remove from heat and stir in chicken and parsley.

■■ Melt remaining butter. Place bread in a medium bowl and drizzle with butter. Add Parmesan and toss to combine.

■■ Spoon chicken mixture into prepared dish. Top with bread mixture and bake for 10 minutes or until top is golden.

Previously working as a private chef for a Swiss client, Benboudy came up with the idea while plating up gourmet food at 30,000ft.

Now his own boss, Benboudy is free to spill the beans on the dining habits of the super-rich.

Talking to the South China Morning Post what surprised him most was not the extravagance of the orders but catering to palates that were more ‘down to earth’.

“We had a customer request McDonald’s for their in-flight lunch menu,” he said.

Although Benboudy revealed the client also requested a kilo of the best caviar he could find as a side to his burgers. (You want fries with that?)

There is nothing quite as fascinating, or maddening as catering to the wealthiest of the wealthy.

Flight attendant Mary Kalymnou described what it takes to serve up food on a private jet. She said the perfect PJ hostie requires “premium catering skills, creative thinking, great manners as well as an elegant and hospitable attitude”.

One anecdote which illustrates this was the time Kalymnou was asked by a client to procure shark fin soup for an inflight meal out of London.

Top performers on dairy scene Ashburton District has been one of the leading dairy farming regions in the country for at least a decade.

We have the highest average production per herd in the country and are in the top three for milksolids per cow.

According to DairyNZ stats for the last season, the district is home to 357,381 cows and is the second biggest dairying region, after Southland.

The average herd has 872 cows and there are 410 herds.

More than half the herds (243) belong to owner-operators, with sharemilkers (104) and contract milkers (63) making up the rest.

More than 100,000 hectares provides the dairy platform, with the average farm 248ha.

Our district herds produced an average

365,312kgMS, with each cow producing an average 419kgMS. Dairy farmers collect plenty of information about their herds and individual cows using on-farm technology and milk sample testing, which looks at milk volume, milkfat, protein yields and other things.

Milk is collected from dairy farms and processed at factories around the region into mostly milk powder.

The sector is a big contributor to the district’s economy and provides jobs for several thousand people.

Most herds have now been dried off and cows are at their winter grazing destinations, pending the arrival of the calving season in spring.

Planning and preparation is vital as the arrival of newborns is a stressful time for

farmers with their time divided by many jobs at the start of the season.

As calving approaches, the mob will be checked regularly, at least twice every 24 hours, preferably every six hours. Staff are looking for signs of labour and for cows needing care.

This year Complaince Partners and RuralCo have joined forces to host a series of Calving Survival 101 workshops over the next two months.

The free workshops, aimed at rural folk, are about sharing some good information about mental wellbeing and resilience, with Pup Chamberlain on hand to help.

The workshops will also cover the importance of sleep and nutrition and how to look after bodies while lifting and moving calves.

Each short talk will be followed by an

opportunity to catch up with neighbours and have blood pressure and cholesterol checked.

Last season Laura Bagrie left her office job in sales in Ashburton to become a calf rearer at James and Kerri Lemon’s 950-cow farm at Lauriston.

Bagrie had no regrets about the country move and was at ease with her daily attire of gumboots and overalls.

“I love animals and the opportunity because my father does quite a bit of work on this farm and they needed a calf rearer so I jumped on board.

“I’ve got no regrets whatsoever – I could never go back to a nine-to-five office job.’’

She wasn’t entirely a newbie to country life as she has lived on lifestyle blocks and her parent’s dairy farm which is leased out.

Cow-less farmer rises to the top Ruwan Wijayasena is at ease knowing that he will forever be a cow-less farmer.

The Hororata contract milker walks up to the crossbred herd he manages and before long they surround him, curiously nosing in his direction.

He stretches out his arm and they crane their necks to get closer to him, contentedly grazing on the ryegrass and clover mix in between bouts of curiosity.

There almost seems to be a state of calmness between man and animal.

That’s perfectly understandable because as a follower of the Therawada Buddhism faith, Ruwan believes that animals and fellow humans should be treated as he would want to be treated.

His religious beliefs prevent him from owning cows or making terminal decisions about them going on a one-way trip to the meatworks.

The city-born Sri Lankan is contract milking 1840 cows for Theland Farm Group on two farms over 537 hectares near Hororata and his wife Niranjala runs a motel business in Christchurch.

In his 14th year in dairy farming, Ruwan has worked up to owning his own contract business, running a team of eight staff across two properties.

“My wife and I are Buddhists and the Buddhist philosophy we believe in means we don’t like to do anything to any other person or animals that we don’t like to receive ourselves. That’s the simple answer.

We don’t want to get hurt so we don’t like to hurt anybody or animals. This is the way we look at it, but not every Buddhist sees it the same way because there are some Buddhist farmers that own cows and take the normal traditional path that other farmers do in New Zealand.’’

The nature of dairying means that there comes a time when ageing and underperforming cows must be removed from the herd to make way for betterproducing animals.

Ruwan and Niranjala understand this dynamic and that life and death is part of dairying.

His interpretation of his faith means that he is not prepared to make life and death decisions for his own animals. Hence, he doesn’t own them and has dismissed ever running a sharemilking business and owning a dairy farm.

However, he is prepared to follow the instructions of other herd owners.

If that means ageing or underperforming cows have to go on the truck at the end of their fruitful life then he will ensure this is carried out.

During their active milking lives he will do his best to ensure they have a happy and productive life.

The no-cow ownership philosophy hasn’t stopped him from getting ahead in dairying or being named the Canterbury/ North Otago Share Farmer of the Year. He went on to win the business performance award at the national level of the competition.

He says their religious beliefs haven’t stopped them from getting ahead because the New Zealand dairying model offers different ways of building wealth.

“It does mean we had to find a way to grow our business rather than stay in the traditional path.’’

Ruwan was born far from rural surrounds in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo, a densely populated city of about four million people.

He studied agricultural science at the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka and specialised in livestock production.

The couple met at the university as Niranjala was also studying for an agribusiness management degree.

After completing his degree, he worked on a dairy farm and managed a laboratory testing for aquaculture disease and providing disease prevention advice.

He soon tired of working on the congested island and they began looking at other countries to make a new start.

Ruwan Wijayasena is happily married to his wife, his cows and his faith.

National plan to eradicate M. bovis

Ashburton continues to be the district most affected by the cattle disease mycoplasma bovis.

As at June 5, there were six actively infected farms with another 17 under notice of direction restrictions and a further 73 under surveillance. Nineteen properties have been cleared of the disease and 67 notices of direction have been revoked.

The disease causes serious health problems for all cattle, including mastitis that doesn’t respond to treatment and arthritis. MPI is trying to eradicate it through a programme that involves culling infected herds; New Zealand will be the first country in the world to eradicate the disease if they succeed.

Farmers and their families dealing with the disease or suspected of having it are under huge stress and district mayor Donna Favel announced last month that a group of representatives from the local agricultural and health industries had been formed to help address potential and ongoing concerns around the disease.

The group’s objective is to help facilitate discussions between MPI and relevant organisations to ensure information is consistently shared in a timely and targeted manner with the district’s farming community.

by representatives from MPI, Federated Farmers, Dairy NZ, Beef & Lamb NZ, Rural Support Trust Mid Canterbury, Vet Ent, and the Ashburton Hospital.

“M. bovis has inflicted a great deal of stress and uncertainty for our people, and we each recognised that something more needed to be done to help support our

MPI says eradication will not be a simple process and the national plan also aimed to reduce the impact of that process on the people and businesses involved and to leave the system stronger than previously.

“We know that some of the most important things we can do for farmer welfare is to get their compensation paid and help them get back to farming. We are committed to doing things better, getting money paid as soon as possible and supporting farmers to t back to business,” said director general Ray Smith.

Not being a dick pays dividends Ashburton dairy farmer Craig Hickman has quite a following on Twitter, with thousands of rural and city people taking an interest in his life on the farm. He has a golden rule for social media interactions.

There’s a picture doing the rounds on the internet of an English nutrition company by the name of Huel.

Like a lot of companies, they have their mission statement written large upon a wall at headquarters, but where Huel differs from most is the message placed above.

It dwarfs their mission statement, emblazoned in bold type: Don’t be a dick.

It’s a pretty good goal for individuals and companies alike: Don’t do silly things to unnecessarily upset other people and good things will follow.

The flipside, of course, is that being a dick can do you needless harm.

Earlier this year an ex-rugby official and aspiring politician contacted me via Twitter to ask my advice on how to be successful on the micro-blogging platform.

“Don’t be a dick!” I replied.

Of course he ignored me and now not only is he largely mocked online, but even the party famous for tolerating dicks, the Conservative Party, doesn’t want a bar of him anymore.

Fonterra isn’t immune to being a dick either.

Back in 2016 and in the face of plummeting milk prices, they changed the

terms of payment for thousands of trade suppliers; instead of getting paid within 30 days now they would have to wait 90.

Nobody liked it; not the Government, not the opposition, the suppliers or the press.

It was an indefensible move and, even though the appointment of new CFO Marc Rivers in 2018 saw the policy gone by lunchtime, the sour taste still lingers.

The damage done will take years to repair, the new government doesn’t think too kindly of the co-op and a lot of energy has to be expended rebuilding trust that was needlessly flushed away with a single dick move.

That’s why it’s heartening to see Fonterra being pragmatic when it comes to the Government’s recently-released emissions targets and Mike Cronin, Fonterra’s managing director of co-operative affairs, had the perfect response: “… we anticipate the Government will support the significant investment in research and innovation that is needed to develop solutions to help farmers reduce their

emissions.

“Our focus now is on supporting our 10,000 farming families…”

It’s a response that sees Fonterra support the Government’s ambitions but leaves no doubt that they don’t intend to shoulder the entire burden.

That the Climate Change Bill has been attacked by Greenpeace for having no teeth, by Federated Farmers for unrealistic methane reduction targets, by Forest & Bird for offering “special favours to the agricultural lobby” and by Beef & Lamb for just about everything, should signal that the Government has probably got it just about right.

Upsetting all the lobby groups at once requires some level of skill.

We need to choose our battles and I don’t believe arbitrary targets set for 30 years in the future with no means of enforcement and no penalty for not achieving them is a battle worth fighting.

Let’s save that energy for something meaningful and immediate, like DIRA, and in the meantime let’s try not to be dicks.

Raising a glass ... to milk New Zealand dairy products help to support an improved quality of life for many, and, in some instances, to support life it very self. In other places our dairy products are more about pleasing palates, discerning ones at that.

With World Milk Day (June 1) just passed DairyNZ’s chief executive Dr Tim Mackle reflects on where the delicious milk that New Zealand dairy cows produce is consumed.

It’s something of a dairy travel adventure, he says. What begins with Kiwi cows and farmers ends up being consumed in more than 140 countries globally – as well as here at home in communities from North Cape to Bluff.

“New Zealand is the eighth largest producer of dairy in the world, and one of the most environmentally sustainable too,” he said.

“This is because our farmers continually look for ways to care for the environment, and because our cows are fed grass which is grown on-farm, unlike many of the dairy countries around the world where feed needs to be brought in.”

He says the New Zealand way of dairy farming resonates well with consumers looking for the most sustainable food sources, and that many consumers also regard the milk from a grass fed cow to be superior.

“It all adds up to New Zealand dairy products being very sought-after internationally, and that’s something every Kiwi can be proud of.

“Looking at the world map to see where our dairy is being consumed is like an A-Z travel adventure. China is our largest overseas market – probably no surprise for many Kiwis – buying

25 per cent of what we produce, with what they imported last year valued at $3.4 billion.

“What might not be so widely appreciated is some of the other countries that go for our dairy – take Algeria for example, how many know Algeria not only imports our milk powder, but also a lot of our butter and cheese?”

Dr Mackle says New Zealand milk powder is a lifeline in a number of countries where there are hungry populations to feed, but no significant dairy farming.

“Milk is the fifth largest provider of energy for humans, and the third largest provider of protein and fat. It has many of the key nutrients to support the development of healthy bodies, and helps our brains to function at higher levels too.”

As well as providing liquid sustenance, milk powder is also used in confectionery and baking, or to make ice cream, yoghurts, and the like.

New Zealand produced butter and cheese are popular internationally too, with cheese exports alone worth 10 times more than wine.

Again, China is a major buyer, including New Zealand made mozzarella which is a favoured pizza topping. Other countries importing large amounts of our cheese and butter are Australia and Japan, while significant quantities are also imported by places like Chile, Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, South Africa, and even Morocco.

Mozzarella capital of the world Love pizza? You’re not alone. Milk from Mid Canterbury dairy farms and carloads of workers who travel from Ashburton are helping Fonterra’s Clandeboye factory become the mozzarella capital of the world.

Clandeboye fired up its third new mozzarella line in September last year and the cheese factory now produces enough cheese to top more than half a billion pizzas a year.

The company confirmed a couple of carpools of workers travelled from Ashburton work in the mozzarella plant, which was built over the past two years.

The cheese is made from one of Fonterra’s secret recipes and is made in hours rather than in months, the time traditional mozzarella takes. It is used in pizzas all over the world.

The co-operative’s cheese can be found on about 80 per cent of pizzas in China which is one of the fastest growing pizza markets in the world.

Fonterra global operations chief operating officer Robert Spurway said the new plant was a good example of the co-operative’s ambition to move more milk into value add products.

The new plant doubled the site’s production of mozzarella.

Fonterra sees growth in the pizza ingredient as more people globally dine out rather than eat at home. The global foodservice market is predicted to be

Virtual field trip a fantastic tool Primary school students across New Zealand had the opportunity to learn more about the role of irrigation in food production through a virtual field trip which brought the farm to their classroom.

Over 128 primary school classes participated in a Virtual Field Trip through a number of locations in Selwyn, designed for students in Years 5-8 in March.

The field trip was organised by CORE Education and IrrigationNZ. The trip allowed classes to take part in three live web conferences where children could ask a range of experts questions and view 11 short online videos explaining more about water and irrigation.

On day one of the field trip the children had the opportunity to find out more about how the recently opened Central Plains Water scheme provides water to farms, and how decisions about who can use water and how much water can be taken are decided.

Day two of the trip involved a visit to Sheffield farmer Damon Summerfield’s property.

Summerfield grows a range of arable crops, and also finishes lambs on his farm.

He exports seeds worldwide and produces wheat for local mills which produce bread.

Summerfield demonstrated how his irrigation system worked and talked about how it enables him to farm differently.

“Having irrigation allows me to grow crops quicker, and to get contracts from

a variety of companies for different crops only available to irrigators,” he said.

Since adding irrigation, Summerfield has started growing chrysanthemum seed for export to Asia and mustard seed, and also improve his crop yields.

Day three of the field trip visited the IZONE industrial park in Rolleston which

is home to many agricultural businesses.

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton discussed how water was important to Selwyn from an environmental perspective as well as for recreation and to the economy by supporting farming activity and jobs in places like IZONE. The day also included a visit to the

Selwyn River to hear about a planned project to recharge the river using alpine water from the Central Plains Water scheme so that it will have improved flows over summer in the future.

Irrigation New Zealand chief executive, Elizabeth Soal, said the virtual field trip was a fantastic educational tool.

“It enables children to learn about a range of concepts and subject areas in a really meaningful way,” Soal said.

Strawbridge claims world 3x3 silver Ashburton’s Ashlee Strawbridge and her New Zealand under-18 women’s 3x3 basketball teammates have stunned the 3x3 world by winning the silver medal at the FIBA Under 18 3x3 World Cup in Mongolia.

Coached by Justine Reed, the side of Strawbridge, Sharne Pupuke-Robati, Tayla Dalton and Charlisse Leger-Walker shone through on the half court to defeat Poland, Russia, Hungary, Japan and China on the way to the final.

On Saturday night they took on the USA, in a final where they were always going to be up against it, with the US team featuring a young star guard and tournament MVP Hailey Ann Van Lith, who was supported by three team-mates all over six foot.

New Zealand had already had a taste of the USA’s firepower in their opening game of the tournament, in the pool round.

USA won that early hit out 2011, and Van Lith went on to light up the court all week.

The Kiwis went into the final with a plan to combat the US playmaker, though, and Leger-Walker – who was named in the tourna-

ment team – opened the scoring by driving left off a Pupuke-Robati screen and calmly slotting a left-handed layin.

Van Lith tried to take it to the rim, but the Kiwis doubled-teamed the assault to strip the ball.

The Kiwis were looking strong from the start.

Refusing to allow the US easy early points, the Kiwis played physical, content to send the US to the foul line, and as a result it took over 90 seconds for the Americans to score their first point.

Van Lith then started to open, using her pace for two quick buckets.

Add fouls and the US were suddenly 5-1 ahead.

Leger-Walker again showed her class, slotting a textbook reverse layup, and she would go on to pick up the majority of the Kiwi points with some strong shooting from deep.

But more than once Strawbridge won possession for her team through some smart defensive play, showing why she was one of the best 3x3 U18 defensive players in the world, while

Dalton’s signature pace opened the court and resulted in clever points secured from both driving to the post and shooting from deep.

Ultimately the US were too good.

Van Lith and the US’ talented tall timber were on form and they managed to stay just out of reach to win 18-13.

Overall though, the tournament was a victorious one for the Kiwis, who were courageous in their quarter-final defeat of Japan, winning it with a Dalton two-pointer in overtime, and then defeating the might of China in the semi-final, 21-15, which was a huge achievement considering China held the number one ranking.

The result came as the New Zealand 3x3 Tall Ferns prepared to head off to the open women’s 3x3 World Cup in Amsterdam.

That tournament will tip off on June 18 and the team for that was due to be named in the coming days.

Kiwis settle for runner-up

Nerveless Barty seals French title Australia knew it had something special in Ash Barty and now the rest of the world does too.

The 23-year-old Queenslander produced a brilliant performance in the French Open final to win her maiden grand slam singles title, taking down Marketa Vondrousova 6-1 6-4.

Just as she did in her semi-final, Barty started the match on fire, racing to a 4-0 lead.

But unlike her previous match, she didn’t suffer from any nerves and she closed out the set without any trouble.

She faced greater resistance from Vondrousova in the second set but stood firm and iced the match.

After hitting a smash winner on match point to become the first person in 46 years from Down Under to win the singles crown at Roland Garros, Barty had just enough breath left to deliver an all-Aussie response, dropping an f-bomb before sinking to her knees in disbelief.

“It’s unbelievable, I’m speechless,” she said later.

“I played the perfect match today.

“To my team, thank you guys for sticking with me. It’s been

the most amazing journey we’ve been on the past three years, and I feel like it’s just the start. Let’s go celebrate tonight.”

Depending on the outcome of the final, one image was waiting in the wings to be unleashed and when match point came and went, the internet duly delivered.

Barty held up her end of the bargain and it meant a well known photo of the Aussie superstar was given a new life online.

The happy snap – taken of Barty in 2002 showing her holding up a trophy as a junior – lit up the Twittersphere after her historic victory, which saw her become the first Australian in 46 years to win a singles title on the Paris clay.

The speed at which the photo went viral meant Barty was already being asked about it soon after receiving the most previous silverware of her career during an interview with British broadcaster ITV. “That photo has gone far and wide across the world,” Barty said of the image that shows her smiling gleefully at her junior club, the West Brisbane Tennis Centre.

Ash Barty and re-purposed the image slightly to give it an updated feel with the Suzanne-Lenglen Cup. That very photo was shared by Aussie tennis star Nick Kyrgios while plenty of others also shared the original picture from their social media accounts alongside congratulatory messages.

Everywhere you looked in the aftermath of Barty’s win, you had the 2002 version of her staring back at you.

Barty will rise to No. 2 in the world after her breakthrough major victory, which will be the highest ranking for an Aussie woman since Evonne Goolagong was No. 1 in 1976.

came Australia’s first indigenous major champion since Goolagong triumphed at Wimbledon in 1980.

“Evonne sent me a text a couple days ago ... I spotted her name on the trophy,” Barty said.

“It’s amazing what she’s done for Indigenous tennis ... hopefully we can continue to create those opportunities for kids to know this (can be) a career.”

Barty will be hoping to hit top spot in the rankings soon given the grass court season – her favourite surface – is just around the corner.

Saturday was the first time Vondrousova had ever stepped foot on Court Philippe Chatrier and the occasion clearly got to the Czech teenager.

She took too long to get into the match and by the time she found her rhythm, it was too late.

Vondrousova was shattered after the match as tears flowed but she was all class at the postmatch presentation, paying tribute to Barty not just as a player but as a person too.

“First of all, congrats Ash and your team, you gave me a lesson today. You’re an amazing player and you’re such a nice person, so you deserve this,” Vondrousova said.

In the men’s $11,000 draw Kiwi No.3 Evan Williams once again showed his consistency to make his way through a draw, but found himself beaten for a title; his sixth final since the beginning of 2018.

On this occasion Williams, the tournament second seed ranked 104 in the world was defeated by top seed Rex Hedrick (Australia) with a ranking of 68.

Hampstead draw, but still improving Cambridge dribbled a late goal into the Hampstead goal to secure a 2-all draw in the South Canterbury senior women’s hockey competition on Saturday.

A draw wasn’t necessarily a bad result for the Nicky Foden coached Hampstead side, though.

They’d only won two match-

es so far this season, and after a slow start Foden said her team was finally starting to come together in the second round.

She said Hampstead’s energy had changed.

“The girls are getting it together now and I think they are bonding a lot better,” Foden said.

Foden said Hampstead looked

to have the game under control against Cambridge in Timaru on Saturday.

Cambridge were always chasing – Hampstead scored first, and Cambridge struck back, before Hampstead claimed the lead back 2-1.

But Cambridge ended up having the last say.

Hannah Mowat scored both of Hampstead’s goals.

The other game of the round saw Craighead take on Geraldine on Friday night, with competition leaders Geraldine coming out on top 3-2.

In the senior men’s competition, Mid Canterbury’s sole side – Wakanui – had the bye.

Rumoured to be on the move from the Penrith Panthers for the past few weeks, Kiwis captain Dallin Watene-Zelezniak has found a new home. The 23-year-old outside back has joined the struggling Bulldogs on an 18-month contract effectively immediately. The Bulldogs beat out rival clubs in the North Queensland Cowboys and Wests Tigers for the young star’s signature. NRL.com reports the Tigers were desperate to sign Watene-Zelezniak but were unable to move a player on to make room for his services.

Warriors ‘not tough enough’ Warriors forward Adam Blair admits the team have a problem dealing with adversity in games – and belief dips when things go against them.

Speaking after the side’s 32-10 loss to Melbourne on Saturday night, the 33-year-old veteran said the team is currently “not tough enough as a group” to stay in the contest when momentum turns late in matches.

Saturday’s defeat was their fourth on the trot at home, and continued a pattern of fading after halftime.

“You start the second half and something doesn’t go your way, and it’s kinda like we think it is too tough,” said Blair.

“We forget about all the hard work that we have done in the first half and we don’t go back to doing the same thing we were.

“It seems like when we get on the back foot it’s too hard for us

to get back in it, or we are thinking that someone else will do the job for us.

“When you go back over the performances [at home] we do struggle in the back half of games; sometimes it’s because things don’t go our way and we are not tough enough as a group to find our way of it.”

The Warriors had led 10-2 after 19 minutes, thanks to well-constructed tries to Ken Maumalo and Kodi Nikorima.

Cronulla is back on track after recording a comprehensive 42-22 home win over Parramatta. Teen sensation Bronson Xerri bagged a double on Saturday to make it five tries in two games, while co-captain Wade Graham went unscathed in his return from an ACL injury.

Halfback Kyle Flanagan also scored a try and kicked seven from eight attempts for an individual 18-point haul. After some early-season adversity with cap breaches and injuries, the Sharks produced one of their best displays of the year to lead 38-6 after an hour. Maika Sivo, Josh Hoffman and Michael Jennings added some respectability before Aaron Gray iced the Sharks’ victory late.

Rakaia, Methven take early wins

They might have conceded 50 points and added another game on to their 10-year Watters Cup losing streak, but Hampstead weren’t altogether unhappy with their 50-29 loss to Rakaia on Saturday.

That’s because other than a 20-minute period early in the second half, Hampstead well and truly kept pace with Rakaia, giving them a confidence boost heading into the remainder of the Mid Canterbury Rugby competition.

Four of Mid Canterbury’s five senior rugby sides were in action in the opening round of the Watters Cup on Saturday.

Southern had the bye, which worked out pretty good for them giving them time to recover both physically and mentally from a dramatic 31-all draw in the final of the combined competition a week ago today.

The other four teams all headed out onto the paddock with something to prove.

Rakaia, Methven and Celtic were all coming off combined campaigns where they didn’t perform as well as they’d hoped, while Hampstead were hoping to build on what was their best combined competition in years.

While they’d defeated local sides in the combined competition over the years, it had now been 10 years since they last won a game in the local competition, and general feeling in rugby circles was that the current team could be the one to break that losing streak.

And at half time on Saturday, Rakaia looked to be in danger of becoming that team.

PHOTO ERIN TASKER 080619-HM-0474 A strong, freezing wind was at Rakaia’s backs in the first half but they didn’t always use it to their advantage and only led 19-7 at half time thanks to a couple of late tries.

Whether it was enough of a buffer was the question, and when Hampstead crossed for a try straight away in the second half, it looked like it was game on.

But, for the next 15 minutes, Rakaia dominated.

They didn’t give Hampstead a look in, holding on to the ball and going on a try-scoring spree to take it from 19-12 to 50-12.

Tim Hanrahan scored a double, while Ese Jr Fakatoka, Seta Koroitamana, Tom Innes, Timoci Nabakeke and Logan Flett added one each along with a penalty try,

and Andrew Letham added four conversions.

Although the game was out of reach, Hampstead finished strong, scoring three late tries to narrow the gap to 50-29 and secure a bonus point for scoring four tries.

Hampstead coach Shaun Bovey said his side was simply beaten by a better team and he didn’t feel

like Hampstead had played badly.

In fact, he was proud of the heart they showed to come back late, rather than getting their heads down and ending up conceding 70 or 80 points.

“We might have conceded 50 points, but we are third on the table in the Watters Cup,” Bovey said.

Rakaia coach Terry Murray said he headed to Hampstead expecting an arm wrestle, and for most of the match that was exactly what his side got.

“I was really impressed with the game.

“I think the way that Hampstead played and their attitude towards the game ... there was no niggle, and no rubbish going on,” Murray said.

For his side to come out with the win was the perfect start to their Watters Cup campaign.

“To have a good solid win, and it painted some pictures for us and gave us some things to think about and ponder,” Murray said.

Defending champions Celtic also had a bit to ponder, after being beaten by Methven 30-11 on Saturday.

On the other side, Methven coach Jason Kjestrup felt the win was Methven’s best performance of the season.

“For the full 80 minutres, they didn’t let up,” Kjestrup said.

Tait Chisman, Matthew Lizst, Nete Caucau and Matt Groom scored Methven’s tries, with prop and captain Groom’s try further cementing his spot as his team’s leading try scorer for the season.

Methven took home the Max Gilbert Challenge Trophy for their efforts, and it would go on the line again this weekend when Methven hosted Southern.

Crusaders storm back to seal home finals berth AP The back three of Braydon Ennor, Sevu Reece and David Havili shared eight tries as the Crusaders emphatically sealed first place in the Super Rugby league standings by routing the Melbourne Rebels 66-0 in their last match of the regular season on Saturday.

Wingers Ennor and Reece scored three tries each and fullback Havili two as the defending champion Crusaders unleashed all of their backline armoury in a 10-tries-to-nil win to make sure of home advantage through the playoffs.

Ennor missed a fourth try when he knocked on with the line open in the last minutes.

It was a resounding response to a mild dip in form from the record nine-time Super Rugby champions, who lost for only the second time this season in the last round.

After outclassing the Rebels, the Christchurch-based Cru-

saders sit nine points clear of closest chasers the Wellington-based Hurricanes with one round of regular season games remaining.

With top place secured, the Crusaders will have a bye in that final round, precious rest time ahead of the quarter-finals on June 22.

The Hurricanes made sure of fourth place with an impressive 37-17 win away in Johannesburg over the Lions, who have made the last three finals.

Winger Ben Lam scored two tries in the first 10 minutes of the second half after the teams had been level at 10-10 at halftime to break the game open for the Hurricanes.

Swarming the breakdown, the Hurricanes won the physical battle and outscored the Lions five tries to two. That included a double for All Blacks hooker Dane Coles, who came off the bench in the second half along with flanker Ardie Savea to give the Hurricanes extra power up

The Hurricanes have the second-highest points tally of the competition behind the Crusaders but tournament rules dictate that the leaders of each of the three regional conferences hold the top three places.

Stung by last week’s shock loss to the Hamilton-based Chiefs, the Crusaders produced a brilliant attacking performance to crush the Rebels.

The Crusaders tore to shreds a disorganised Rebels defence, especially taking advantage of wide gaps on both flanks.

Flyhalf Richie Mo’unga kicked to those spaces and Ennor, Reece, and Havili provided slick finishing touches.

Reece took his tally of tries for the season to 13, moving clear atop the list of try-scorers. Ennor and Reece, both uncapped, are strong contenders for New Zealand’s squad for this year’s Rugby World Cup. Ryan Crotty scored the last and most celebrated to mark his

150th game for the Crusaders.

He added the conversion.

“Obviously last week the pressure came on a little bit,” Crusader captain Sam Whitelock said. “But it was awesome for (Crotty) to score in his 150th and wind back the clock by taking the shot at goal, too.”

The Brumbies clinched Australian conference honours and ended the playoff hopes of the New South Wales Waratahs with a 35-24 win.

Argentina’s Jaguares clinched the South African Super Rugby conference title with a 34-7 victory over the Durban-based Sharks. A try either side of halftime to fullback Emiliano Boffelli gave the Jaguares the conference title with one week remaining in the regular season and earned it a home quarter-final in the first week of the playoffs.

The Cape Town-based Stormers forced their way into the top eight and kept their playoff places alive with a 31-18 win Braydon Ennor notched up a hat-trick. over Japan’s Sunwolves.

Bad Boy off to Trentham Talented jumper Bad Boy Brown booked a place in next month’s Wellington Hurdle (3400m) at Trentham when he outstayed his open-class rivals in Saturday’s feature hurdle contest at the venue.

The seven-year-old gelding bided his time at the rear of the field for rider Isaac Lupton before looming into contention approaching the home corner. In a slogging finish on the Heavy11 surface, Lupton brought his mount with a powerful run to snatch victory from race favourite Gallante with Guy Fox battling on well to claim third. - NZME

NZME A brilliantly fine day and a huge on-course crowd combined to provide the appropriate farewell to thoroughbred racing at Waimate yesterday where the Waimate Racing Club ran their last meeting at their home venue.

The club has not been issued a licence to hold its annual race meeting during the next season, following the release of the Messara report and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing’s subsequent venue plan.

Rather than using the meeting to politicise the issue, the club took the opportunity to celebrate the rich history of thoroughbred racing in the area, with Club President Mike Cooney determined to make the most of the meeting for everyone involved.

“While we are still not too sure as to why we need to stop racing here and what difference it will make to the industry, we decided to focus on celebrating what we have achieved in nearly 150 years of racing here,” Cooney said.

“We invited as many of our former members and committee members as possible to the day although there are a few who couldn’t attend due to old age.

“I’m sure those who made it thoroughly enjoyed their day with plenty of tall tales being told along the way.

“While the fields had fallen away due to a number of factors, the day dawned fine and the crowd was rolling in well before the first race.”

I

f there is a Scott Robertson bandwagon zooming by, I’m hopping on it.

New Zealand Rugby’s new broom must surely sweep Robertson into the All Blacks coaching job after this year’s World Cup. The looming departure of Steve Tew as NZR boss may see Ian Foster’s chance of taking the top job plummet.

Foster, All Blacks coach Steve Hansen’s loyal and longtime deputy, was part of a succession plan which will get a re-write with Tew gone.

That opens up the race.

And Robertson’s credentials are starting to reach the impossible-to-ignore status.

He has that magic touch.

In the age of sports statistics for just about everything, there is also an indefinable aspect to coaching. As the league guru Graham Lowe loves to say, coaching is an art not a science.

Another way to put it is that some coaches excel at getting their players on the same page.

There were great examples of this, in good and bad ways, in New Zealand over the weekend.

The first came at Mt Smart Stadium, where Steve Kearney’s Warriors are falling apart at the seams.

Kearney has worked for and with the best in the business, two quite different characters in Craig Bellamy and Wayne Bennett. But the coaching knack is not something that is easily passed on.

Bennett is the ultimate coaching conundrum. To the outsider, he is drier than Queensland scrub in summer, with a face chiselled out of concrete, and a smile that … well, it isn’t a smile. And yet he is a master at getting the best out of people, even when he is old enough to be a great-grandfather to his players at South Sydney.

Melbourne Storm boss Bellamy has constructed the most remarkable football club in the southern hemisphere, a masterpiece in development and strategy situated in a

league outpost.

If ever a team is on the same page it is the Melbourne Storm, as the Warriors found out on Saturday evening.

When the Warriors made their one bid for glory during the second half, the Storm responded with a blanket of dirty defensive tricks. It was co-ordinated mayhem, with a purpose. It worked.

When the Storm broke free, despite being a man down, the incomparable Cameron Smith dribbled a kick over the Warriors line and Jesse Bromwich flew onto the loose ball for a try. Prop or no prop, someone in the vicinity knew what was coming next.

The Storm are almost always organised, calm and yet ferocious whether they are winning by 30 or trying to mount a comeback. And so are Scott Robertson’s Crusaders, who demolished the Rebels on Saturday night.

Like many others, I had Joe Schmidt as deserved favourite to succeed Hansen, before Schmidt decided to take a break for family reasons after this year’s World Cup. The Jamie Joseph/Tony Brown combo was then my dark horse pick.

But with Robertson hurtling towards a three-out-of-three title record as a Super Rugby coach, it’s clear New Zealand may have unearthed a very special coach.

Robertson seems to love the job, and the enthusiasm is infectious.

The Crusaders deserve a lot of credit for installing a coach whose quirky character seemed at odds with their traditions, a man who has unleashed a new era of Crusader dominance.

Robertson is a rookie by international standards, but his rise is irresistible and he believes his own experiences as a test player stand him in good stead.

There is some risk, but the potential rewards look exceptional. And sometimes, a person simply earns the right.

The idea that the All Blacks coach needs to have worked overseas or been involved with the test side has credence. But a special game-changer has turned up.

Their opening batsman Martin Guptill was dismissed for a golden duck.

And the spirited Afghanistan line-up created trouble for the 2015 Cricket World Cup finalist at times on Somerset’s Country Ground but ultimately weren’t quite a match.

A seven-wicket victory gave New Zealand three wins from three games to start the tournament, and consigned Afghanistan to their third straight loss.

Compounding woes for cricket’s newest top-level team, star spinner Rashid Khan was hit on the helmet while he was batting and couldn’t contribute for an Af-

ghan bowling attack trying to defend a small total.

For New Zealand it was the bowling depth that proved crucial, with change bowlers Jimmy Neesham (5-31) and Lockie Ferguson (4-37) reining in the Afghan innings after Hazrat Zazai (34) and Noor Ali Zadran (31) got away to a flyer.

The New Zealand chase was less dramatic, despite the innings-opening loss of Guptill to Aftab Alam’s first ball of the tournament.

Kane Williams led the way with an unbeaten 79, including an 89-run third-wicket partnership Ross Taylor (48) as New Zealand reached 173-3 in the 33rd over.

Williamson said the performance was an improvement on the previous two wins and his Black Caps were building nicely

for their next match in Nottingham against 2011 champion India.

He credited Neesham with making a big difference.

“He bowled some beautiful deliveries today and broke a crucial partnership at the top of the order for us and deserves all the credit that he’ll get for a five-for, which is outstanding,” Williamson said.

“We, without a doubt, know how talented the Afghanistan side is ... very savvy as well, very cagey in how they operate. So it was a really good performance from us today.”

Afghanistan was up against it after losing the toss and being sent in to bat in overcast conditions on a green-tinged pitch, yet the openers plundered 12 off the first over and raced to 66 by the 11th over before the innings unravelled.

Neesham struck to remove Zazai, Ferguson dismissed Noor Ali two balls later and Neesham snared two more wickets as Afghanistan lost 4-4 in 20 balls.

It was reminiscent of Afghan innings in losses to defending champion Australia and 1996 champion Sri Lanka earlier in the tournament, as wickets fell in clusters.

Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib said his team showed flashes of potential, with the opening stand and the bowling performance from pace bowlers Alam and Hamid Hassan.

“We lost three games, but the morale is still high,” Naib said yesterday.

“We need one good match ... to start momentum.”

Two rain delays didn’t help the Afghanis, but Hashmatullah Sha-

hidi dug in with 59 to lift Afghanistan to 172 in 41.1 overs.

Neesham claimed two more wickets around the rain delays and Ferguson, after bowling three consecutive maiden overs to tie the Afghan run-rate down, returned to get three of the last four.

Two of those proved to be crucial.

He finished Hashmatullah’s defiant 99-ball stand to end the innings after knocking Rashid out of the game – the Afghan tailender ducked into a short ball and had to undergo assessment for concussion.

Rashid didn’t come back to the field, with Afghanistan’s team doctor deciding it was safer for the young spinner to rest.

After three games in 10 days, Afghanistan gets a week off before taking on South Africa in Cardiff.
