Puppies left for dead The SPCA has made a plea for information after eight dead puppies, thought to have frozen to death, were found in a rubbish bin at an Ashburton park yesterday. News of the grisly discovery sent the community into a spin yesterday afternoon with many
expressing their disgust at the act and local SPCA centre manager, Rebecca Dobson described it as one of the worst cases of dumping she has worked on during her time with the SPCA. The eight Bull Mastiff cross puppies were found dumped in the rubbish bin next to the play-
ground in Mona Square on Tuesday morning. The five boys and three girls estimated to be only a couple of days old weighed between just 600g and 1.2kg. “It is completely horrible and it didn’t need to happen,” she said. “I’ve been doing this for a long
time and this is one of the toughest things I have had to deal with, it has been really difficult for all of us.” At this stage it is not known how the puppies died, but with extremely cold temperatures on Monday night there is a possibility they have frozen to death.
Post-mortem results showed that the puppies had been fed by their mum, and they looked otherwise healthy.
