Mid Canterbury players wore black armbands during last night’s Ranfurly Shield rugby clash against Counties-Manukau, in memory of a young player who died after a truck he was driving collided with a train earlier this week.

Police yesterday confirmed George Robert Ellis, 22, had died in Christchurch Hospital on Tuesday, following Monday morning’s crash at the Northpark Road railway crossing.

Mr Ellis’ death has hit the Mid Canterbury rugby community hard; coming just two years after two young Southern colts players were killed in a horrific car crash near Hinds.

Among the photos posted and tributes flowing on his Facebook page yesterday, a team-mate described Mr Ellis – affectionately known within the team as Badger - as an immediate cult hero and everyone’s favourite player within a month – something he’d never seen before.

Others spoke of his infectious attitude and described him as a caring, humble, all round good guy.

devastated. “Right from the word go George fitted like a glove into our environment and our team,” Mr Smith said.

He said George had been developing into a good player on the left wing, recovering well from an old shoulder injury to cross for four tries for Southern this year.

Southern is due to play Hampstead in Watters Cup action on Saturday.

It was not yet known when the funeral – to be held in his home town of Ongaonga in the Hawke’s Bay – would be, but if it was Saturday Hampstead had agreed to move the game so team members could attend.

The Southern club is planning to hold a memorial service for Mr Ellis, with his employer, WaterForce, also involved.

A minute’s silence was held before the match in memory of both Mr Ellis, and 17-year-old Northland player Jordan Kemp who died after collapsing during a game at the weekend.

Originally from the Hawke’s Bay, Mr Ellis moved south to attend Lincoln University after attending Wanganui Collegiate School.

Pizza for whole plane Domino’s pizza manager Andy Ritchie has taken a lot of orders, but never one quite like this: to feed an entire plane full of hungry, delayed passengers, stuck on the tarmac. It was about 10.30pm on Monday when the pilot of the Frontier Airlines flight called in, said Ritchie, manager at the pizza chain in the western US city of Cheyenne, Wyoming. The pilot wanted to feed all 160 passengers and crew to make up for the delay, so Ritchie and his two employees whipped up around 35 pizzas and sent them to the plane. “We took them up to the front desk at the airport and they escorted our driver to the back and they handed the pizzas directly to the flight attendants,” Ritchie said. The plane was en route from Washington when it was diverted to Cheyenne while it waited for bad weather to clear in Denver.

Barrier arms ‘must be installed’

Barrier arms must be installed at the Northpark Road rail crossing, says Ashburton mayor Angus McKay and they must be installed and paid for by KiwiRail.

George Ellis died on Tuesday after his truck was struck at the crossing on Monday morning by a southbound train.

KiwiRail staff were on site when the crash occurred, undertaking preliminary work ahead of the installation of warning lights and bells at the crossing.

Those safety measures do not go far enough; the site had high traffic volumes and an accident record that should ensure KiwiRail erected barrier arms as well, Mr McKay said.

The crossing was the scene of a fatality in 2002 and a major smash last year. Concerned that the railway crossing sign and give way sign were insufficient to alert motorists to the crossing, the Ashburton District Council decided to replace the give way sign with a stop sign.

That saw it get off-side with KiwiRail and it was ordered to remove its sign and reinstall the original.

It might not have barrier arms on its work plan but KiwiRail is happy for a third party – presumably the council – to

foot the bill.

In a statement senior communications advisor for KiwiRail David Miller said the barrier arms would carry a price tag of around $90,000.

“Funding for these could certainly come from an outside party,” he said.

KiwiRail understood the public’s need for assurance that all practical steps were taken to ensure appropriate protection measures at level crossings, Mr Miller said.

“These are re-evaluated after any collision at a crossing. We have a nationwide priority list for upgrading protection measures at level crossings, to ensure fairness around the country and aim to upgrade eight to 10 crossings each year.”

Bells and lights are on KiwiRail’s work list for installation over the next two or three months.

That doesn’t satisfy Mr McKay who is adamant barrier arms must be installed and that it is KiwiRail’s job to foot the bill.

“We carry out our functions under an Act of Parliament, looking after our roading network and doing our level best to tidy up accident-prone corners and roads. I believe KiwiRail should do the same,” he said.

Parents reeling following the loss of their son

A family spokesperson said the Ongaonga parents of Mr

Ellis, 22, were still coming to grips with his death in Christchurch Hospital on Tuesday.

Police said the accident happened about 8am on Monday, when Mr Ellis crossed the path of a freight train in his truck while going through a give way

controlled railway crossing in Ashburton.

Mr Ellis’ truck sustained extensive overall damage as the train pushed it off the railway line and into a nearby paddock.

The train sustained significant frontal damage and

stopped some 500m further south along the line.

The family spokesperson said Mr Ellis’ death had come as a shock to his parents, who were “really struggling” and needed time to grieve.

“It’s been a pretty rough 48

hours for them.”

Mr Ellis had grown up in the region and attended Ongaonga School.

Recently he had been living in Canterbury and he was working at the time of the accident.

Ashburton drug dealer jailed

By Kurt Bayer An Ashburton meth dealer who took consignments from an Auckland drug mule was yesterday jailed for almost four years.

Raymond Donal Todd, 36, admitted dealing $40,000 worth of the Class A drugs in Ashburton and Christchurch for an Auckland dealer.

Father-of-four Todd was caught with $9300, an air pistol, hunting-style knife and a balaclava by police shortly before he was to pick up 12 grams of P in June last year from a female drug courier.

Days earlier, he’d picked up 28 grams – some of which he’d kept for himself, and the rest he sold on.

A judge at Christchurch District Court yesterday expressed amazement at how many drug dealers found with weapons

claimed to be keen bird or rabbit hunters, like Todd did.

“They must’ve been pretty savage pigeons,” Judge Raoul Neave said, adding that the find was a “sinister” one.

Todd, a self-employed carpenter, had become a P addict and had turned to dealing to fund his habit, his lawyer said.

The fact that he’d gotten to the age of 36 without any serious prior convictions – only a few driving matters – was an indication of the “insidious nature” of meth use, defence counsel Craig Ruane said.

Todd earlier pleaded guilty to 10 charges – possessing the class A drug methamphetamine for supply or for offering to supply, possession of the party drug GBL, or Fantasy, for supply, cultivating cannabis, receiving stolen power tools, having an offensive weapon – an air pistol – in a public place,

and possession of cannabis for sale.

There were 40 grams of meth involved over two transactions, the court heard, with a street value of $40,000.

Todd was assisted by Jason Richard Beckley, 42, who was yesterday sentenced to nine months’ home detention and 300 hours of community work for his role as a driver.

The court heard that Todd was selling the drugs in Ashburton and Christchurch for the head of the operation, an Auckland man who is awaiting sentence on two charges of supplying methamphetamine and one of possession of cannabis for supply, and his case will be called next Friday.

Mr Ruane said Todd had been a “productive and wellrespected member of the local community”.

He was a user who “knocked

some out for friends and acquaintances”, the lawyer said.

But Judge Neave said “he was a bit more than that”, who picked the drugs up at the airport and was a key part in the supply chain.

“He wasn’t giving them away like chips at a party,” the judge said.

Crown prosecutor Deidre Orchard said Todd was a commercial dealer who also sold to cover his own drug use.

During the police bust, he was found with $9300 in cash, a large quantity of new, empty point bags, used ones, digital scales covered in a powdery residue and a cutting agent commonly used for meth.

Judge Neave jailed him for three years, 10 months and ordered forfeiture of the cash under the proceeds of crime legislation.

Police, fire briefs Ashburton Police apprehended a man for driving while suspended at 2.18am yesterday morning.

• The Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to what turned out to be a controlled burn on Irwins Road at 3.10am yesterday.

• At 6.43pm on Tuesday night they were also called to a chimney fire on Somerton Road.

• The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to Peter Street at 8.55pm on Tuesday night, to a house which had filled with smoke.

No action was required.

River scoured Five police divers are searching the Turakina River for clues about missing man Brett Hall. The search was “part of ongoing inquiries” and was “a result of developments from last week”, said Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Kirby, the Whanganui Police officer in charge of the investigation. “We’re looking for items believed to have been discarded into the river,” Mr Kirby said. Mr Hall disappeared three years ago. He was last seen at his Pitangi property, between Parikino-Atene, on May 27, 2011.

A man was charged with his murder last month.

Co-operative positive for the economy

Smoke alarms probably saved the lives of the occupants of a block of Westport flats deliberately set alight early yesterday morning.

Arson has been confirmed as the cause of the 1am blaze that took firefighters about two hours to extinguish. Two people escaped the Palmerston Street building unharmed. Fire risk management officer Stan Greene said investigators had now finished their origin and cause investigation. He said smoke alarms had probably saved the lives of the people in the building and saved the building itself.

EA Networks has wrapped up a trading year in which it gave $4.8 million to its shareholders in power bill discounts and still managed to keep its lines charges at one of the lowest rates in New Zealand.

And that result, board chair John Tavendale said, is evidence of how positive a co-operatively owned company can be for the local economy.

“The more successful EA is, the more we give back to our community through discounts or infrastructure improvements – it doesn’t get much better than that,” he said.

The most recent survey of New Zealand domestic electricity prices shows that EA line charges are more than 30 per cent below the national average.

The company’s business was focused on supporting the local community, and that came through very clearly in the key initiatives rolled out this year, Mr Tavendale said.

Mayfield residents now have a more secure power supply and the aesthetic benefits of fewer power poles, and undergrounding work continues across other urban areas.

During the year, more than 14 kilometres across two stretches of local state highway have also made the switch to an underground supply, resulting in the removal of 120 power poles from accidentprone stretches of road.

“On top of improving supply reliability in rural communities, undergrounding power

cables has made a significant improvement in road safety for these areas,” Mr Tavendale said.

The company’s programme of installing fibre-optic broadband cable in rural areas as part of the underground power programme continued through the year, he said.

“High speed internet is critical infrastructure for the local economy and we can assure customers that EA will do what it can to ensure the rural sector is not left behind.”

Extreme weather events such as the September 2013 windstorms came with a $500,000 repair price tag from power outages.

That brought home the importance of appropriately managing trees on rural properties EA Networks general manager Gordon Guthrie said.

“While storms like these are outside of anyone’s control, one of the key things we can all do is be vigilant about trees near power lines.

“Making sure any trees on your property are kept well clear of overhead lines can have a huge positive impact on the reliability of your power supply.”

For farmer Mark Redward rodents have taken up residence in two of his vehicles. Damage done to vehicles by rats who gnaw on wires, rip out insulation for nests, or squirrel away materials, can wreak havoc as Mr Redward has discovered.

Ear reattached

EA Networks was faced with a bill of $500,000 following the September 2013 windstorms.

A man who needed part of his ear surgically reattached after a serious assault this week has been discharged from hospital.

The 27-year-old from Mount Maunganui was taken to Waikato Hospital on Monday following a fight at a Links Ave home at 7pm the night before. Police said most of the man’s ear had been cut off and a weapon believed to be responsible was seized. A 15-yearold was arrested in relation to the fight. He is to appear in Tauranga Youth Court next week.

Plans to raise our profile

By Thomas heaTon Ashburton will be in the sights of foreign investors as New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) works with Grow Mid Canterbury to develop a detailed profile.

Investment profiles, highlighting the strengths of the country’s regions, were launched at the New Zealand and Australia Economic Development Forum in an effort to garner foreign interest.

Canterbury’s profile skimmed over a number of Mid Canterbury’s successful businesses, only highlighting Canterbury Seed Company, the Methven ski area and Synlait.

Brawley saw the profile as a bit “generic” but is currently working with NZTE to create a more specialised, sub-regional profile to be part of the wider profile.

“We are in the process of providing [them] information,” Mr Brawley said.

Mr Brawley said they identified some of the businesses and regional strengths, but there were several they had overlooked.

Canterbury’s profile highlighted the region’s economic growth as well as its knowledge intensive industries, urban rebuilding and highly productive agricultural industry.

NZTE will work with economic development agencies and the private sector to attract investors’ interests as part

of the next phase of the programme.

In the past NZTE provided foreign investors with information on New Zealand as a whole, but this will be the first time they will be able to have a more detailed look at different regions and what they have to offer.

Economic development minister Steven Joyce saw the process as a means to further boost New Zealand’s regional economic strength.

“It’s the regions that have led New Zealand’s recovery from the global financial crisis.

“These profiles will help regions attract more new investment and further strengthen their local economies,” Mr Joyce said.

First of three building projects under way

Ashburton Borough School is in the early stages of a multi-million dollar facelift that will take months to complete.

The first of three building projects, totalling in excess of $2.8m, has started with the rebuilding of the administration block.

Ministry of Education head of education infrastructure service Kim Shannon said three building projects were either under way or in the planning stages at the primary school.

The administration block rebuild was to replace the existing building which had weather tightness issues.

Mrs Shannon said this was expected to be completed by the end of the school year. It was expected to cost $1.2m.

The second project was the recladding of the multi-purpose/hall space. It too had weather tightness issues.

“This project will commence as soon as the administration building project is complete and will take approximately six months to complete. It is expected to cost circa $800,000.”

“The projects have been separated to minimise disruption to the school,” she said.

In its early stages was a planned project for a new block of four teaching spaces, or classes. “This building replacement programme will result in the removal of a number of old relocatable buildings,” she said.

Mrs Shannon said the school’s future needs would be considered to make sure the new block was put in the best position on the site. However, it was too

early in the planning stage to set a timeframe.

The Ministry of Education was currently in discussions with Mid Canterbury’s 23 school principals about how best to meet current and future demand with recent roll growth.

Between 2008 and 2011 Ashburton district rolls increased by about 300 students. In the two years between 2011 and 2013 the district roll went up 40 students.

The Ministry of Education funding policy was to allocate $204,000 per class, which meant Ashburton Borough School had a budget of $816,000.

This was likely to be exceeded with additional costs as yet unknown.

“Demolition and potential relocation of existing buildings will add to the budget,” she said.

Seventh death on local roads so far this year By erin Tasker

The death of a man following a collision between a truck and a train this week was the seventh on Mid Canterbury roads so far this year.

George Robert Ellis, 22, died in Christchurch Hospital on Tuesday as a result of the truck he was driving colliding with a train at the Northpark Road railway crossing on Monday.

Police said Mr Ellis was driving west along Northpark Road at about 8.15am when his truck crossed into the path of a southbound train. The impact pushed the truck off the railway line into a nearby paddock and the train stopped some 500 metres further south along the line.

Police said witnesses reported the train sounded its warning device on more than one occasion prior to the collision.

The investigation into the cause of the crash continues and any witnesses were asked to contact Constable Fran Clark at the Ashburton Police Station.

The crash was just one of a number of serious crashes reported in Mid Canterbury, or involving Mid Canterbury people, over the past couple of weeks.

Two people remain in hospital, including a 23-year-old Ashburton woman airlifted to Christchurch Hospital following a crash between her car and a truck on State Highway One at Bankside on Friday.

She remains in a serious but stable condition in intensive care.

An 11-year-old girl hit by a truck on West Street a week ago also remains in hospital. She sustained a broken femur and pelvis, has undergone surgery and is now in a comfortable condition in Christchurch Hospital’s children’s ward.

The Guardian understands the driver of a tractor which was split in two after it was rear-ended on Wakanui Road on Monday afternoon walked away without serious injuries.

Drive tests ‘a can of worms’

Imposing fit-to-drive tests on tourists could open a can of worms when it came to deciding who should and who should not sit those tests says the owner of an Ashburton car rental business.

Unless a test was applied universally it could lead to accusations of discrimination, A to B Rentals owner Keith Drummond said.

“At the end of the day, how do you tell an Aussie they have to do a test; do you discriminate and say that only certain

nationalities have to sit it?” he asked.

Associate transport minister Michael Woodhouse has not ruled out making tourists sit a driving test before they get behind the wheel, but the focus is currently on improving driving in the Queenstown area where the number of crashes involving tourists is high.

Mr Drummond does not believe that testing will solve the high tourist crash rates.

“At the end of the day people can pass a test very easily, but that doesn’t mean they’re good drivers. I believe accidents

would still happen,” he said.

Any testing had to be universal, because it would be impossible to tell at a glance which drivers posed a risk and which did not, Mr Drummond said.

His rentals are not generally hired to overseas tourists.

Most of his business is locally generated from people with friends and family visiting who need transport for a short time.

He avoids the airport business.

Road smashes involving tourists were always highlighted and the issue was uppermost in the minds of people in the Ashburton District after

Dutch driver Johannes Jacobus Appelman killed a mother and two school girls on Thompsons’s track on May 31, he said.

It would be difficult, however, to ensure that all tourists renting cars were safe to drive; as it was with any person driving in any country, Mr Drummond said.

In Queenstown, several rental car companies have come up with their own screening programmes such as driving around the block with clients they suspected had low confidence and asking a range of questions prior to sign-in.

In brief Two hurt in crash Two women are in a critical condition in hospital after they were cut from their vehicles after a crash in Napier last night. Eastern District Command Centre Senior Sergeant Ross Smith said two cars, with a single occupant in each, collided on Prebensen Drive, Napier, about 6.25pm. The drivers were taken by ambulance to Hawke’s Bay Regional Hospital.

A hospital spokesperson said both drivers, one in her 50s and one in her 20s, were in a critical condition last night.

Face off with attackers The victims of a group beating are set to face their teen aggressors.

Tae Flavell, 19, Annalise Cooper, 19, and Makayla Spiers, 18, were assaulted by a dozen teenage girls late last month, after asking them to pick up a wheelie bin that had been knocked over. Police yesterday confirmed they had completed their investigation and four Dunedin teens – two aged 15 and two aged 16 – had been referred to a youth justice family group conference.

Not suspicious The death of a 58-year-old man, who was found in Queenstown’s Shotover River yesterday, is not suspicious, police say. The Arrowtown man’s body was spotted by a jetboat operator, who called emergency services about 10.40am. It was found in an area of river near Big Beach, near Arthur’s Point, Sergeant Steve Watt said.

The man’s car was discovered parked near the river and police were working to notify his next of kin. His death was not being treated as suspicious and it had been referred to the coroner, Mr Watt said.

Netherby the focus of student’s work

When Erin Walker stages an exhibition to mark the end of her four-year photography course, the people of Netherby will be its stars.

She’s currently working her way around Ashburton’s eastern suburbs, camera in hand, recording the every-day stories of the people who make up the place she calls home.

Her parents Marilyn and Peter own Netherby Four Square.

That’s where Erin returns each university holiday and that connection has provided fertile ground for her major end of

course project.

She wanted to portray the way the store tied people together and the sense of community that this generated in the Netherby area.

With several weeks of filming behind her, Erin said she’s worked with a range of people who have been happy to share their stories.

The work had been incredibly satisfying, she said, but there are still a few gaps she’s hoping to fill.

“I’m trying to get the last few. I’m still looking for younger people and families in particular.”

Next week Erin returns to Wellington and will spend the following weeks editing the material she has filmed and planning her end of year exhibition.

That exhibition will be the culmination of four years of study and for many students it is likely to be the key to snaring a coveted job in the photography business.

They all know finding that dream job will be tough, she said.

“Getting a job will require a lot of self motivation; you have to always be out their looking.”

Her years of study are almost completed, and looking back she says knowing the end is in sight is exciting – and scary.

For her, photography was almost an accidental career choice.

She initially started out studying graphic design, took a couple of photography papers and was hooked.

Once the Wellington exhibition is completed, Erin hopes she can secure space in the Ashburton Art Gallery to bring her work back home to show the people who are its stars.

Two Tongan police officers have been jailed over the death in custody of New Zealand policeman Kali Fungavaka, TVNZ has reported. Inspector Kelepi Hala’ufia was sentenced to 10 years in prison and Constable Salesi Maile was sentenced to eight for Mr Fungavaka’s manslaughter.

A man who was in a police cell with Mr Fungavaka, Semisi Kalisitiane Manu, was given an 18-month suspended prison term for grievous bodily harm, TVNZ said. A third police officer, Constable Fatai Faletau, who was found guilty of assault, will be sentenced on July 29.

Dog owners in court The owners of four dogs which attacked a 7-year-old Japanese girl in Murupara have pleaded not guilty. Charlotte Boyt, 31, and Gareth Clive Boyt, 35, appeared in the Rotorua District Court before a registrar yesterday morning.

They face a joint charge under Section 58 of the Dog Control Act of owning four dogs that caused serious injury. Lawyer Bill Lawson said pleas of not guilty could now be entered, after a decision that diversion was no longer an option.

The pair were remanded at large to reappear in the Rotorua District Court on August 20 for a case review hearing.

Terrain park proves a winner The new Mt Hutt Sky High terrain park is proving a winner with school aged skiers and boarders.

It features six different pipe rails for intermediate and advanced riders to practice or showcase their best tricks including waterfall, straight and flat-down rails and it has become the place to be for younger skiers, ski area manager James McKenzie said.

“The weather so far these holidays has been stunning with bluebird days, so the views from the ‘Sky High’ park have definitely lived up to its name.

“It’s been really well used with up to 400 through in an hour and we’ve been getting great feedback,” he said.

Tuesday signalled the first running of the field’s new-look triple chair up and this opens up more terrain for advanced skiers and snowboarders.

School holidays are in full swing at Canterbury’s Mt Hutt Ski Area with bluebird days and plenty of fun on the snow.

Fans turn out for Hammers

They came from far and wide, and although their team was beaten on the night, Mid Canterbury fans were still all smiles after the 10-46 Ranfurly Shield defeat in Pukekohe last night.

Mid Canterbury fans turned up in good numbers, almost outnumbering the Steelers’ fans, and were vocal supporters for the teams. Overall, the crowd numbered around 100.

There were flags and banners, and plenty of green and gold, but if seeing them wasn’t enough, they let their team hear they were behind them.

There were a few worried faces after five minutes when the Hammers were down two tries but they still got in behind their team.

“Come on Mid Canterbury” and “Hammers” chants were heard with regularity, despite Counites making most of the play.

sparked them up a gear and they were simply buzzing at halftime after the Hammers almost closed the gap to within at least seven.

The buzz was put out somewhat with a superior second half from the hosts to run away with the win, and any hopes of a huge celebration taking the shield home to Ashburton were over.

It was 10-46, but still they stood and applauded their team off the park.

The players mingled with

their fans, friends and family – many of whom were obligingly allowed to pose with the shield their team hadn’t won – but were proud as punch of the boys from Mid Canterbury.

They may not have won the shield to start the season, but if they can build on that performance – against an ITM Cup Premiership team – then they may reward those fans with another Meads Cup come October.

The woman at the centre of a diplomatic incident and the victim of an alleged attack has spoken out about her ordeal.

Tania Billingsley, 21, was allegedly attacked by Malaysian warrant officer Muhammad Rizalman Bin Ismail on May 9.

Ismail, a former staff a former staff member at the Malaysian High Commission, has been allowed to go back to Malaysia, following mixed messages from an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Ms Billingsley, a Wellington resident, said speaking out on last night’s Third Degree “put a face” to her case.

“I guess that I’m someone who has something to say about this assault, I mean it happened to me and throughout this whole process especially once it’s become so public, my voice hasn’t been heard. And I do, obviously, have a lot to say about this. I’m not just a bystander.”

Before speaking out publicly about her ordeal, Ms Billingsley applied to have the name suppression on her case lifted.

“I guess in making myself public that I am making myself quite vulnerable … just being so visible, it’s quite a scary thing.

Ismail is accused of following Ms Billingsley home and assaulting her with intent to rape.

After being arrested on May 9, he appeared in Wellington District Court the next day, but invoked diplomatic immunity.

Campaigners call on Ministry of Health to provide evidence By toni WiLLiams

Anti-fluoride campaigners want the Ministry of Health to front up with evidence that unfluoridated drinking water has caused an increase in tooth decay in New Zealand’s urban areas were the practice has stopped.

The call comes after an official information request made by Ashburton man Don Church, printed in the Guardian on June 18 - showed no adverse effects on dental health.

Fluoride Free NZ said since Ashburton had stopped fluoridation in 2002 there had been a small, steady improvement in dental decay.

The organisation said since fluoridation was stopped in Timaru, Tauranga, Matamata, Kaitaia, Ashburton, Taumarunui, New Plymouth, Waipukurau and Hamilton in 1986, the ministry of health

online statistics said there had been no increase in dental decay in later years.

Despite the claims, Ministry of Health Personal Health Service Improvement group manager Deborah Woodley said the ministry remained in favour of fluoride in drinking water.

“The Ministry’s position is unchanged. The Ministry recommends that local authorities fluoridate their water supplies as a safe, effective and affordable way to prevent and reduce tooth decay,” she said.

The role of fluoride in the prevention of dental decay was well documented in international studies and New Zealand data. She said the 2009 New Zealand Oral Health Survey was the most recent and comprehensive Ministry survey.

It found children and adolescents aged between two

and 17 years old who lived in fluoridated areas had on average 40 per cent less decay than children in non-fluoridated areas.

The survey, its data and methodology was available on the Ministry of Health website.

Ms Woodley said although the Ministry recommended drinking water be fluoridated wherever technically feasible, the decision was up to each local authority as they managed their water supplies.

The Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay said there were no plans to look into the fluoride issue again in Ashburton since the last binding referendum was only recently done in 2007.

While Ashburton residents voted for no fluoride in their water, the following year Methven residents voted in favour of fluoride.

Ms McGregor said the majority of the daily sessions over the school holidays were fully

booked with 30 children.

They had a variety of activities planned.

This week they had visited the skate park, gone swimming at the community pool and attended a magician’s performance.

Next week included in the fun was a trip to Christchurch were they will visit the Canterbury Museum and the Science Alive Construction Unit at CPIT. The programme was for primary school-aged children.

In brief Train crash in Durban Two trains have crashed into each other in South Africa’s eastern coastal city of Durban, injuring about 80 people. “There was a train collision in Berea, Durban.

The two trains collided and there are about 80 people who are injured. No fatalities have been reported so far,” rescue service spokeswoman Luyanda Majija said yesterday. Another official, Russel Meiring, said the crash by two Metrorail trains was head-on, and that none of the injuries were critical.

Israel hits 160 targets in Gaza The Israeli air force bombed 160 targets in the Gaza Strip overnight as it pressed a widescale campaign to stop volleys of Palestinian rocket fire.

“Overnight, the IDF (army) hit about 160 targets in the Gaza Strip. Over the past two days we attacked a total of about 430 targets,” Israeli General Moti Almoz told military radio as Operation Protective Edge entered its second day.

The targets included about 120 concealed rocket launchers, 10 Hamas command and control centres, among them two homes, and many tunnels, he said.

“Hamas’s weapons stockpile has suffered significant damage over the past two days,” Almoz said yesterday.

He said the Islamist movement has been “forced into a corner” and was trying to attack on multiple fronts.

“Last night, Hamas started to unveil its surprises,” he said referring to an attempted attack by sea and the barrage of longrange rockets fired at cities as far away as Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and the northern coastal city of Hadera, which is more than 100km from Gaza.

“Hamas was trying to surprise and find the weak points and penetrate Israel by sea or through tunnels; these incidents were thwarted very successfully by the IDF,” he said.

The rocket fire continued yesterday, with army radio reporting that at least five projectiles from Gaza were shot down over

Tel Aviv and its surrounds by Israel’s Iron Dome anti-missile system.

Hamas’s armed wing the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades claimed the rocket fire, saying it had launched four M75 rockets at Israel’s commercial capital.

Almoz said meanwhile that an incident at Kerem Shalom, location of the main goods crossing between Israel and southern Gaza, was still “ongoing”.

“The forces still on very high alert to ensure that attacks like this are foiled,” he said, without giving further details.

Interior Minister Gidon Saar, a member of security cabinet, said the military had been given orders to “significantly” expand the campaign.

“We didn’t limit the campaign

in terms of time, in fact we ordered the IDF to significantly broaden the attacks on Hamas and to do everything to return the quiet and ensure a significant blow to Hamas and the terror organisations in Gaza,” he told the radio.

Israel, he said, was going into the widening operation with its “eyes very much open”.

“We’re ready for every possibility, including a ground operation if necessary, although it’s not going to be the first step.

But there is a readiness for that and that’s why we ordered the call-up of 40,000 reserve soldiers,” he said.

Israel would not stop until it had dealt a decisive blow to the militant groups operating out of Gaza, he said.

Typhoon Neoguri bears down on Japan Typhoon Neoguri is bearing down on the Japanese mainland after slamming into the southern Okinawa island chain, killing two people and leaving a trail of damage.

Packing gusts of up to 180km/h, the typhoon could hit the southern main island of Kyushu as early as today before moving east along the Japanese archipelago, the national weather agency said.

Officials said Neoguri would bring torrential rainfall and warned of the risk of flooding and landslides after the storm - which has weakened from a

super typhoon - forced half a million people to seek shelter in Okinawa on Tuesday.

By yesterday, the typhoon was about 400 kilometres away from the west coast of Kyushu and was churning north in the East China Sea at 25km/h.

The weather agency warned that as much as 300 millimetres of rain could fall on Kyushu in just 24 hours through noon on Thursday.

Kyushu, next to the biggest island of Honshu, the site of major cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, was already experiencing heavy rain and strong

winds. Authorities were likely to issue an emergency alert for residents to seek shelter before Neoguri’s landfall.

On Monday, officials issued their highest typhoon alert for Okinawa, warning that Neoguri could turn deadly.

Yesterday, the weather agency’s chief forecaster, Satoshi Ebihara, said the situation in Okinawa remained serious even as the typhoon moved out to sea.

The agency has issued a fresh rainfall alert.

Just more than 52,000 households had no power yesterday

in Okinawa, while schools were closed and air and sea traffic halted.

In just 12 hours, Okinawa’s main island was hammered by twice the amount of rainfall that usually falls in the entire month of July.

The coast guard and police said a 62-year-old man was found dead after he was knocked off his boat in rough waters near Japan’s mainland, while public broadcaster NHK said an 81-year-old fisherman died in southwestern Kumamoto prefecture.

The number of people believed to have died from Ebola in west Africa has jumped to 518, the World Health Organisation says. The UN health agency said yesterday 50 new cases - 25 of them fatal - had been reported between July 3-6 by health authorities in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The total number of laboratory-confirmed, probable or suspected cases of Ebola in the region has now risen to 844, the WHO said. The hardest-hit country remains Guinea, with 408 cases and 307 deaths.

Tunnel chaos The partial closure of the Channel Tunnel has created havoc in France, with migrants crowding around trucks queuing for ferry services, trying to sneak on board to get to Britain. A power failure on Tuesday forced the closure of a section of the track in the undersea tunnel going from France to Britain, spelling chaos for travellers as several Eurostar train services were cancelled.

A spokesman for Eurotunnel, which manages the undersea link, said yesterday the problem had been solved and the tunnel was once again working at full capacity.

On suicide watch Nine asylum-seeker mothers threatening suicide at the Christmas Island detention centre are under 24-hour surveillance by male guards as Prime Minister Tony Abbott vows not give in to their “moral blackmail”. Christmas Island Shire councillor Gordon Thomson says the women are prepared to sacrifice themselves to give their children a better life. “They believe that by killing themselves, their babies born in Australia will have to stay in Australia,” he said. Mr Abbott insists his government won’t capitulate to what he described as “moral blackmail”.

Runners gored A straggling half-tonne bull has gored two men as it turned its horns on panicked daredevils in a bull-run on the rain-moistened streets of Spain’s northern city of Pamplona. Another four runners were taken to hospital with bruises as they tripped over each other while racing ahead of six fighting bulls and six steers in the annual San Fermin festival yesterday, regional health authorities said.

One bull lagged behind the pack just before entering the city’s bull ring and confronted frightened runners.

Crossing fix a must Stu Oldham

eorge Ellis died at a railway crossing that has already claimed a life.

And, as this editorial is being written, Mid Cantabrians are struggling to understand how this could have happened.

Mr Ellis died in hospital on Tuesday. A day earlier, at about 8am, the truck he was driving was struck by a train at the Northpark Road railway crossing in Ashburton.

The intersection is marked by a railway crossing sign and a stop sign. People nearby said they heard the train driver blast his horn as he approached the intersection.

Police are investigating but the people who know the intersection best say sun strike is at its worst at that time of the morning. Some at the scene had no doubt it played a part in what happened.

Some were also in no doubt that the crossing itself figured in the crash. It needed to be safer and plenty of people had made plenty of warnings before now.

This intersection has form. A motorcyclist was killed there 12 years ago and there was a noninjury accident there last year.

People nearby know of many other near misses.

KiwiRail is in the throes of installing lights and bells at the intersection and planned to further assess its safety needs in the future and in light of what happened on Monday.

It has also reminded drivers to approach such intersections with care.

However, plenty of Ashburton road users want KiwiRail to exercise even more care when deciding what to do with demonstrably dangerous intersections.

Rather than waiting for new results from a points system influenced by traffic movements, incidents and near misses, they want immediate action to avoid such crashes happening again.

Transport company operators say nothing short of barrier arms will stop accidents when sun strike occurs.

Our community has worried about this intersection before.

The Ashburton District Council once installed a warning sign there, but KiwiRail had the original sign reinstalled.

But now, worry has given way to proof. This intersection must be made safe.

This would restore parliamentary behaviour to the chamber.

Now the vast sum of money that would be collected by this tax could be used, for example, to fund free university education to all.

Parliaments could also vote to have preference for entry to various courses of study, especially courses on morality and parliamentary debate.

Sunday 6 July Dear Captain’s Log; Woke early to begin Tekapo plan but derailed by serious attack from Trade Me – it made me read all motorbike listings!

While making a cup of tea discovered a report from my wife stuck to the jug.

She writes: ‘Peter’s attempt at creating a delicious cooked breakfast was well below standard. If Peter is to reach the standard he must try harder, stop looking at Trade Me and learn his basic cooking facts. It would help if Peter practised every morning at home during the holidays.’

Upon finishing the report I discovered I had overfilled the jug, which allowed boiled water to splash onto the control unit of the electric fry pan, causing it to malfunction.

Think I got away with it as I told my wife the smell was from the cat getting too close to the fire and singeing its tail.

I gave the cat an icepack which it refused and held it down to wrap plasters on its tail to make the story believable. For some reason the cat was snotty at me.

Monday 6 July Dear Captain’s Log; Began the day well. I started the Tekapo plan and have called it the Long Term Plan For Visiting Tekapo

It took 38 minutes to think of that title. It’s great to be under way. Next I decorated my title page with photos from Google about Lake Tekapo, it looks really good.

Disaster! The cat came in just as I was colouring in the border, threw up a huge furball with Barbie Plasters mixed in!

Where did she find the Barbie plasters?

Her furball obliterated part of my cover page! How will I explain to the family I haven’t completed the plan to visit Tekapo?

Dear Captain’s Log; Sweating now because my wife came down to make her own French toast and asked where the fry pan was? I said I had to go as I had a property sub-committee meeting at the garden shed.

No-one came to the meeting and now I have to type up my own minutes.

Discovered a screwed up ball of paper in the upstairs toilet.

It’s my Tekapo Plan cover page! How did that get there? I must have a behaviour meeting with the family.

Wednesday 8 July Dear Captains Log; I’ve really got my mojo back now, I’m out in the garden shed writing up my sub-committee minutes while drying out the Tekapo Plan cover page on the fry pan.

(I took the switch apart and dried it with the hair dryer, seems to work okay and didn’t cost anything).

Talk about multi-tasking!

No wonder I am in charge of a school.

Suddenly an enraged mammal with a tail that looks like it got a bad wax job launches itself at me! I stumble back and knock the fry pan over against the mower petrol can!

The fire chief says it was lucky it was only the shed as they discovered there was a fry pan with a dodgy control unit in the blaze.

He said if that had been in the house it would have been a disaster.

Dollar poised to pass record high The New Zealand dollar is within striking distance of its post-float high against the US dollar, due mostly to weakness in the greenback and a sluggish American economy.

At yesterday afternoon’s level of US87.92c, the currency is just short of its post 1985 float high of US88.42c, which was set on August 1, 2011.

Foreign exchange strategists said a push in the currency beyond the 2011 record was possible over the next couple of days.

“Will it break through? Yes, there is every chance because it is looking quite strong,” Westpac senior market strategist Imre Speizer said. “The main reason, still, though is US dollar weakness rather than Kiwi dollar strength,” he said.

Just as in 2011, strategists said New Zealand dollar’s strength was more to do with US dollar weakness than Kiwispecific factors, although an overnight credit rating outlook

upgrade by Fitch and the prospect of higher domestic interest rates were clearly supportive for the Kiwi.

In 2011, political wrangling over the US budget deficit and the spectre of the US defaulting on its debt repayment obligations put the US dollar on a downward slide, adding upward pressure on many currencies, the Kiwi included.

Overnight, weakness in US equities translated into buying interest in the US bond market.

When bond prices rally, yields fall, and so when the US 10year bond yield fell by five basis points to just 2.56 per cent, the greenback came under renewed selling pressure.

“Last night, the price action was about an extended US equity market that needed to pulled back, so that caused a shift out of equities and into US bonds, which pushed down US interest rates and pushed down the US dollar,” Speizer said.

AA calls for diesel price reduction The climbing New Zealand dollar and falling world oil prices should keep a lid on petrol prices says the Automobile Association, but it is calling for a cut to diesel prices.

The kiwi dollar climbed to three-year high overnight, jumping above the US88c level after credit ratings agency Fitch Ratings reaffirmed the country’s AA rating and upgraded its outlook to positive from stable.

And world oil prices are continuing to fall as concerns ease over supply disruptions from

the Middle East, with Libyan exports set to resume and signs of stability returning to Iraq.

Benchmark Brent fell US$1.30 a barrel to close at $108.94 a barrel in London trade.

AA Petrolwatch spokesman Mark Stockdale said the falling crude oil price could result in lower petrol prices here in the longer term but the refined price had risen sharply last week and was still high.

The New Zealand dollar was keeping a lid on the price of petrol which across the country

averages $2.24 a litre for 91 unleaded. It has risen steadily during the past six weeks.

Stockdale said refined petrol prices were affected by global refinery capacity and demand for the fuel, which is strong at present.

However, the price of refined diesel had fallen, leading to a 4c a litre reduction last week and there was room for a drop of a similar amount now.

Diesel prices are critical to businesses relying on freight and the growing number of private diesel vehicles.

Central bank lifts the ‘speed limit’

By Brian Fallow The Reserve Bank has revised up its estimate of the economy’s potential or non-inflationary growth rate next year, but it is still shy of the levels prevailing between the mid-1990s and the mid-2000s.

It is commonplace to describe the potential output growth rate as the economy’s “speed limit” – to convey the idea that it is possible but dangerous to exceed it.

However, the bank’s assistant governor and chief economist, John McDermott, in a speech to the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, made it clear that it is much more variable and

much less certain than that term would imply. The bank’s estimate of potential growth has increased since December and it is now expected to peak at 2.8 per cent next year rather than 2.5 per cent, he said.

The increase reflected data revisions which revealed there has been more investment in productive capital than previously thought; strong business confidence, which suggests future investment could be stronger than previously thought; and a surge in net immigration which means the supply of labour is expected to be stronger than previously expected.

“With the economy growing at a faster rate than potential

output, inflationary pressures are expected to increase,” McDermott said.

“Potential output is determined by the economy’s productive base – that is the supply of labour and capital and the efficiency with which these factors are utilised.”

They combined to deliver potential growth rates between 3 and 3.5 per cent between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s reflecting stronger growth in productivity and in the labour supply than the bank sees in the offing now.

But following the 2008/09 recession the potential growth rate dropped to just 1.2 per cent.

Rare sheep breeder Lucy Burrows has been presented with a top national award for young stock judges.

From the West Eyreton district, Ms Burrows’ eye for a good animal impressed the judges in the stock judging final in the Young Farmers category.

Ms Burrows has been judging sheep since she was 15 years old, starting with merinos. Sheep breeding and judging is a family affair, and her brother John was also at Lincoln University vying the title last week.

The family have several studs, but Ms Burrows, who is a member of the Christchurch City Young Farmers’ Club, focuses on breeding stropshire sheep.

“We try to keep the old breeds alive,” she said.

Farmer calls time after 80 years

Whether you’re looking for a box of bolts or an oak bedroom suite, you are bound to find it Murray and Jill Walkham’s clearance sale on Saturday.

After almost 80 years on the Greenstreet farm which once belonged to his parents, Mr Walkham says it’s time to go.

Throughout his life he’s been a regular attendee at clearance sales and auctions, but this weekend he will be selling rather than buying.

“I always enjoyed my auctions,” he said.

“The clerk in the caravan used to see me coming through the gate and would have my ticket already signed up by the time I got there.”

Mr Walkham admits he arrived with the intention of purchasing specific items, but could never resist a bargain.

“I collected stuff to build a spud grader and a spud digger, and I brought a lot of steel – I thought I could do a bit of welding and make fancy gates when I retired, but the old joints have

packed up, and it never happened,” he said.

“The trouble is I never got rid of anything.”

Among the farm machinery and tools, Mr Walkham is also jettisoning his fishing and whitebaiting gear, and the trailer he used to load the quadbike and inflatable into and head for the river.

The Walkhams will leave the property to take up residence in Ashburton on July 25. Mr Walkham wouldn’t be drawn on how he felt about that, but the man who uses a hoe for a walking stick already has plans for his new home.

“I’ve got my eye on about a third of the back section that I’m going to turn over for a vegetable garden,” he said.

Mrs Walkham has no misgivings about the impending move.

“I always said they would carry me out in a box, but it’s time to think of the wife.

“I spend most of my time in town anyway – I’m ready to go,” she said.

The clearing sale kicks off at 9.30am on Saturday, at 1271 Ashburton Staveley Road.

Just released breeding worth (BW) statistics covering a decade show herd improvement company Liberty Genetics is at the top of its game.

The numbers show that the BW values of its jersey, friesian and crossbred bull teams bull teams are ranking well against the other top sire teams in the country.

“On average, across our three sire teams there’s only around five BW difference between our sire team and other top performing teams.

This includes NZ Animal Evaluation’s adjustments for young bulls,” Liberty Genetics manager of genetic development Dr Dave Hayman Dr Hayman has overseen the company’s breeding programme since 2006. He said the most impressive statistics are for the company’s jersey bull team, which show an average annual BW gain of $15 year-on-year over the past decade; a gain of 146 BW in 10 years.

Dr Hayman says Liberty Genetics’ BW improvements are impressive as its breeding programme is young compared to the industry, as it was only formed in 1998.

Sun shines on convertibles’ big day out

T

here are 48 car enthusiasts who are really glad Sue Cooper decided to buy a convertible.

Well, no, actually make that 50 people, we hadn’t included Sue and her husband in the original calculation. It’s very obvious they are delighted with their acquisition.

The other 48 are the people in 24 other convertibles to accept Sue’s invitation to turn up for a topless tour last Sunday.

Within a month of buying their car Sue decided it would be fun to hook up with others, and as a result 50 enthusiasts in 25 cars braved slightly cool conditions to go on a cruise.

There was a real variety of cars on the run, which headed inland to

Mayfield before returning to town via Rangitata.

I had the good fortune to travel with Stuart Hart in his Triumph TR6.

Stuart is a great driver who is really in tune with his car, so the drive was a lot of fun.

The Triumph TR6 is renowned as a grunty car, and a ride in Stuart’s car certainly indicates why the model has gained its reputation.

Powered by a straight six petrol injected motor, the TR6 has plenty of get up and go.

The car’s four-speed manual overdrive gearbox provides the driver with very good gear ratios, which Stuart used to maximum advantage.

It’s a comfortable car to ride in and I only had one complaint . . .

Good company and a ride in a well driven great car was an ideal way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

The Triumph TR6 is not only a grunty performing car, it also looks grunty.

It has another claim to fame as well. It sounds magic.

That sound, sometimes described as something approaching a sonic boom, is uniquely TR6.

During much of the tour we were followed by Warwick and Juliana Protheroe, who were also taking part in a TR6.

Warwick, who said it was fun to follow and listen to a similar car, summed it up rather well by thanking Stuart for the symphony!

It may have been a first for Sue but it won’t be the last.

Double loss for motoring community

I

t’s with sadness that we record the passing of two people who have shared their interest in cars with our readers.

John Lilley and Doug Philpott both passed away in June.

Back in July 2012 we found out that Doug was a Nuffield man.

He had owned Nuffield tractors and so it was only natural he would own Morris cars, and in particular Morris Minors.

That’s not to say he hadn’t enjoyed driving other cars as well.

Doug was a real motoring enthusiast who was quite understandably his cars were his pride and joy.

He was always willing to share his wide knowledge with others.

In January this year we spoke to John Lilley on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the day on which his late father purchased a brand new Mark 3 Zephyr.

The car now has the distinction of quite possibly being the only one of that model to have re-

mained in the same family ownership ever since, and John was rightfully proud of that.

Over those 50 years, the car not only provided great everyday transport for the Lilley family, it also brought pleasure to them on holiday trips and to many others as well when it was used for weddings and other special occasions.

John maintained the Zephyr in pristine condition, and was always willing to answer the many questions he received about it.

Both John Lilley and Doug Philpott will be missed within the motoring fraternity, and because each of them had also been involved in so many other community activities they will be remembered by many other people as well.

The Guardian motoring team felt privileged that John and Doug so generously shared their stories with us, and we extend our condolences to Judith Lilley and Olive Philpott and their families.

He wound up finishing 10th, erasing his 39-point buffer on the championship standings to now Scott Dixon sit level with Castroneves at the top. Stablemate Jaun Pablo Montoya won the race - his first open-wheel victory in North America in 14 years. Rookie Carlos Munoz finished the 200-lap race in third, ahead of Ryan Briscoe in fourth and New Zealand’s Scott Dixon. The series next heads to Iowa for the Indy 300.

Another 40-year vet In last Saturday’s edition of our paper Sue Newman shared the fascinating story of our motoring sub editor Steve Devereux’s career at the Guardian. His career has now spanned 40 years during which Steve has seen amazing changes in the newspaper industry.

Ko pursues Lewis Catching the red-hot Stacy Lewis will perhaps be Lydia Ko’s biggest challenge outside of navigating the links of Royal Birkdale when she tees it up at the Women’s British Open. Lewis, the world No 1, has recorded 13 top-10 finishes from 15 starts on the LPGA Tour this year and has played with remarkable consistency. The American won the Arkansas Championship two weeks ago with a blistering sixunder 65 during her final round as Ko was forced to settle for a share of second place, one stroke back.

Ko is yet to win a major but has plenty of time on her side given she is only 17 and the world No 2’s coach, David Leadbetter, said his prodigy had the ability to cross that off her to-do list when the British Open gets underway tonight (NZT).

Youngsters hone hockey skills during holidays

By Thomas heaTon Hockey players of all ages took part in a clinic to hone their skills on the turf yesterday at the Ashburton Domain.

Players from three age groups

and different teams took part in the training sessions provided

by Fetch, a Christchurch-based hockey academy.

The day started off with the younger generations, where it was all about fun, then led into

more serious skill-based training for the older players.

Fetch programme director Matt Ling put on 90-minute training sessions, catering to the needs of the different age groups.

The training sessions were a good way to build the sport up and spread the word, Ling said.

He said the groups were “solid” acknowledging the wide range of abilities and thought the future looked “bright”.

Henderson joins Top guns chase titles on local turf injured rider list

Some of New Zealand’s top cyclists will be chasing titles on Ashburton roads next month, when the Benchmark elite cycle teams come to town.

The event is part of a sixrace series staged on South Island roads and it is the first time Ashburton has been included in the circuit.

Ashburton’s Bruce McClelland and Donald Sutton manage the Calder Stewart team which last year featured Olympian Hayden Roulston.

The race will be one of the bigger cycling events to take place on the district’s roads, McClelland said.

It will be raced in three categories – women, masters and elite men over a circuit of up to 130 kilometres, that

starts and finishes at the Wakanui Hall.

For locals it will be a great opportunity to see some of the country’s top cyclists in action, he said.

“It’s the first time for us and this year we decided we’d put our hands up; it’s extremely competitive with some very high level competitors taking part.”

The Calder Stewart team goes into the Ashburton race as series leaders in terms of team and overall points both in the under 23 and the elite grades.

The three pre-winter races were held in Oxford, Hokitika and Kaikoura. Ashburton’s event on August 16 is the first of the three postwinter events.

BikeNZ officials must be thinking their Commonwealth Games road race ambitions are jinxed.

Greg Henderson’s heavy tumble during yesterday’s 163.5km fourth stage of the Tour de France from Le Touquet to Lille means four riders chosen for road action in Glasgow are either in serious doubt or ruled out for a range of reasons.

The Lotto Belisol professional landed heavily on the knee which was operated on in the off season. Henderson’s knee was split open but BikeNZ are optimistic for a speedy recovery to get him to the start line for the August 3 road race.

Henderson is talking boldly about his prospects of being ready in time for the Games race. However for now BikeNZ are sitting tight until they get

clarification on how quickly the 37-year-old three-times Games medallist recovers.

“It’s a real disappointment for Greg who was in outstanding form for the Tour de France,” BikeNZ high performance director Mark Elliott said.

“We will wait for the result of the surgery and discuss the situation with Greg and our medical team before making any decision on his availability for Glasgow.”

Those selected, then counted out, include James Oram and George Bennett, who were chosen for their professional team for conflicting races, and double Olympic medallist Hayden Roulston, who suffered an untimely injury.

National criterium champion Mike Northey was a late inclusion for the Games on Monday.

Surgery for Braid The Blues have opted to send captain Luke Braid for major shoulder surgery today which will rule him out of the game until next year’s Super Rugby competition.

Coach John Kirwan said they had the option of waiting for another five weeks for Braid’s shoulder operation, but decided to get on with it in the hope the loose forward will be available for the start of next season. The recovery period for the rotator cuff surgery is six months.

Over for Anasta?

The distinguished career of former Test and NSW Origin five-eighth Braith Anasta appears to be over after the Wests Tigers veteran opted to undergo surgery on his injured biceps. The Tigers and Anasta aren’t prepared to say definitely whether this is the end for the 32-year-old, even though he’s all but confirmed this year to be his last in the NRL and the recovery time for such an injury is usually around six months. Anasta will have his partially torn biceps operated on next week.

BMX champ on fire Two years on from her London Olympics misstep, BMX world champion Caroline Buchanan is dominating the world racing circuit. The 23-year-old speed demon jets off to the Netherlands on Sunday to defend the UCI BMX World Championships title she won in New Zealand last year.

And this time around, Buchanan’s confident she’ll win the time trial and racing event double. The Canberra-born rider has been in scintillating form in 2014, winning two BMX Supercross World Cup races already this year.

First XV takes tips from the best

Ashburton College’s first XV rugby team was welcomed into the inner sanctum of the Crusaders’ Super Rugby team’s home on Tuesday night.

The BNZ – Super Rugby sponsors – organised the Ashburton College side to visit the Crusaders at Rugby Park in Christchurch, where they had valuable face time with three of their idols.

Owen Franks, Tom Taylor and Tyler Blyendaal sat down with the team for a question and answer session and then took the players out on the turf and passed on some top tips and skills to them.

Ashburton College forwards coach Mark O’Grady said the team got to go where no team other than the Crusaders ever went.

They got to see everything from where they trained to where they sat and relaxed.

“It was good for them to see the guys in the professional environment and what it takes,” O’Grady said.

The players will now look to take what they learnt into their next encounter in the Press Cup, against Shirley Boys’ High School on July 19. It’s a home game for Ashburton College

and it will be televised on CTV. Shirley has been in good form in recent weeks but Ashburton College will be giving it their all, with an outside chance of still making the top eight in their sights, O’Grady said.

Maroons crush Blues to avoid whitewash Queensland restored some pride with a comfortable 32-8 win over NSW at Suncorp Stadium last night to avoid a first State of Origin series whitewash since 2000.

The Maroons dominated the game from the opening whistle but were held out for 37 minutes by a magnificent Blue wall of defence before skipper Cameron Smith latched onto Daly Cherry-Evans’ perfect kick to score under the posts.

Trent Hodkinson had earlier scored a penalty to give the visitors the lead, but it was a rare foray forward by Laurie Daley’s side in the opening stanza.

Old boys show how it’s done On the night Queensland’s State of Origin dynasty was honoured, the Maroons’ old guard showed they’re not done yet.

For 37 agonising minutes the Maroons threw everything they could at a blue wall of NSW defenders in last night’s Origin finale.

Elite Origin try-scorers Darius Boyd and Greg Inglis tried and failed to break a Maroons’ try-scoring drought stretching back to the 56th minute of the series opener in May. With the clock approaching halftime, Maroons’ skipper Cameron Smith, a veteran of 33 Origins, did what

his teammates couldn’t. He scored a try. The hooker ran onto a perfectly placed kick from Daly Cherry-Evans to end the home team’s 141-minute wait.

Shortly after the halftime break it was another of the men integral to Queensland’s recent success, fullback Billy Slater, who extended the Maroons’ lead after receiving an inside ball from veteran Justin Hodges.

Several buses were set on fire and an electronics store looted in Sao Paulo following Brazil’s crushing World Cup defeat to Germany, police say. Police did not give a figure but Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper said on its website that some 20 buses were torched in a garage where unused vehicles were stored. Another three buses were set ablaze in other parts of the city. Buses are often burned by robbers or as a form of protest in Brazil.

Ali’s gloves for sale The gloves that Muhammad Ali wore in his fabled 1971 Fight of the Century against Joe Frazier will be auctioned in the US. The opening bid will be $NZ135,000, said Heritage Auctions, and can be made at www.ha.com through to July 30. Then they will be sold the following day at Cleveland’s House of Blues. Ali was born Cassius Clay and was still using that name when he had his first fight with Frazier.

Though he lost, Ali would get his revenge in rematches in 1974 and 1975. At the time Frazier was world heavyweight champ.

Tour marks WW1 Tour de France organisers will pay tribute to those who fell on the battlefields of northern France a century ago ahead of the seventh stage from Arras to Reims. It is part of around 2000 commemorative events in France over the next four years to mark the centenary of World War One (1914-18). Several of the Tour’s stages, from yesterday’s fifth stage which began in Flanders, Belgium, to others in northern France, pass through infamous battlefields and past war memorials to those who died in battle. The peloton will ride past some of the most famous of those fields, such as Arras, the Chemin des Dames, Verdun and Douaumont, and will pay tribute to three winners of the Tour who died during the the war.

Scolari takes blame for 7-1 thrashing Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari took responsibility for Germany’s 7-1 thrashing of his star-studded side that took him to rock bottom in a career that has seen spectacular highs as well as controversy.

“I think it was the worst day of my life,” said the 65-yearold. The result, one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history, was “catastrophic,” he admitted.

“I will be remembered as the coach to lose 7-1, but I knew that risk when I took the job and life goes on so that is what I am going to do.”

Scolari did not say exactly what he would do after Brazil were swept aside by five goals from Thomas Mueller, Miroslav Klose, Sami Khedira and two from Toni Kroos in the opening half hour.

Andre Schuerrle added two more goals after half-time before Oscar’s desperate late consolation.

There will be calls for Scolari’s head after the Selecao slumped to their biggest ever defeat on Brazilian soil.

“My message for the Brazilian people and fans is that we did what we could do and we did what we think was our best,” added Scolari.

“We lost to a great team, with great skill, that took six minutes to change the game with four goals in an extraordinary manner.

“Please excuse us for this mistake. We are sorry we could not get to the final,” he said.

“Who is the one responsible?

I am. This catastrophic result can be shared with the whole group because that is what

my players say and want, but I am the one who chooses the tactics, the lineup, so the person responsible for the result is me.”

Scolari guided Brazil to victory in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan and four years later took Portugal to the semi-finals.

His status as a football legend is now tainted, however, and he also faces an investigation into alleged tax fraud in Portugal.

“My future is not a subject for me to talk about now. I have to work to get a good result on Saturday (Sunday NZT)” in the third-place playoff in Brasilia, he added.

Scolari had insisted before and during the World Cup that Brazil would emerge victorious on home soil.

Coronation Target Shooting Club On Monday the Coronation club visited Ashburton club at their Willowby range for the hotly contested Bullock shield.

Nor’westers Musos’ Club June’s Jam was another cracker with plenty of talent up on stage and plenty of well entertained punters.

First up was Don Hughes on electric guitar/vocals, Rhonda Campbell on vocals and Jim Lischner on trumpet & backing vocals. They played some classic including Georgia On My Mind, Makin Whoopie, Route 66 and the classic old Kiwi hit Blue Smoke. Great music guys and thanks Rhonda for coming all the way down from Christchurch to play.

Following on we had the welcome return of Ross from Dunsandel on acoustic guitar/vocals. He performed four outstanding originals, always a pleasure Ross, see you back soon. Next up was Ross’s Niece from Methven, Paige. She donned the acoustic guitar and sang Blown Away by Carrie Underwood and a terrific version of Timber by Keisha & Pitbull. Well done Paige and hope to see you return to the club soon. Zippy, Phil & Jesse then played with some Cream, then did a magnificent medley of Pink Floyd classics finishing off with a Jeese original - Look This Way. All amazing stuff fella’s.

Kurt Fleming on drums and Hayden Wood on vocals then performed two toppa medley’s, one from Black Sabbath and one from Jimi Hendrix, then an original, some Stooges & finished off with the Once Were Warriors Theme.

Good to see you guys back, well done.

Two Crates followed with Tamati on bass, Trem on guitar/vocals, Rocky On vocals, Rob on drums and Gemma on vocals, later Rob and Tamati swapping instruments. They played some covers and then some terrific originals including Jammin, You Stole The Sun From My Heart, and Mary J. Cheers guys as usual very polished set.

Kinnear on acoustic/vocals was to follow with Billy Jean and Wagon Wheel, both getting a rousing response from the great crowd. Good stuff Kinnear.

Phil, Gemma on acoustic guitar & Zippy played Bad Romance from Lady Ga Ga, then joined by Rocky on backing vocals performed Talking About A Revolution from Tracey Chapman, and Cocaine from J J Cale finishing off with Trem taking over vocals with Under It All. Really big effort from all performers and great two have some new comers to the club.

With no one vulnerable N/S, playing 5 card majors, arrived at a final contract of 4S, needing to win 10 tricks.

West found the passive lead of a diamond.

Immediately declarer recognised only 2 entries to dummy with the K,Q of diamonds and must play East for the spade K. Once in dummy he led the spade 10 and when East declined to cover, played the 9 from the closed hand. He then played the spade 8 and followed with the 5 from hand. When West showed out his careful play was rewarded and the spade suit was brought home safely by overtaking the spade 7 with the Q, and the spade A dropped the K. 4 trump tricks, 3 diamond tricks, 2 club tricks and a ruff in hand, of either a heart or a club, gave the required 10 tricks.

What if West had led a club? A grateful declarer would make an extra trick with the club J and probably have a top board.

Aorangi Golf Templer Trophy This was for Working Ladies that designate their playing day as Saturday.

I had cards from 12 Clubs one other Club did not put in a card as it was well over the players handicap due to wet conditions I did ask for the number of Club individuals who played in the competition from what I can work out 54 played for the Templer Trophy. Unfortunately 3 clubs did not give me a number as they did not send the correct entry form in I feel that this was worthwhile and hopefully you as Clubs will vote to carry this on for the future, as it gives your working members a chance at winning a trophy as they cannot attend Tournaments during the week.

Tinwald Red Cross A general meeting was held at home of Ailsa Lovett on July 1st. President Lynette Lovett welcomed many members and to Carol Ball Humanitarian Services Manager based in Christchurch. “Kiri and Emergency” which is to be distributed to primary schools and Early Childhood Learning Centres in Christchurch and the wider Canterbury area.

Members were thanked for their contribution to the knitting project along with Methven and Rakaia Branches for the 256 knitted items that have been distributed to three schools, Plunket and a Pacific Island Group. Discussion on how to celebrate the Branch’s 50th Jubilee next year with a subcommittee being formed. Information was given on new Zealand Red Cross “Century of Care“ for 2015. One hundred years ago New Zealand Red Cross became a Branch of the British Red Cross and in 1931 became a National Society in its own right. A subcommittee is to be formed of representatives in the Mid-South Canterbury area to progress idea for the celebration.

Members were reminded of the stall to be held at the Tinwald Hall Indoor Market on 19 July. Raffle was won by A. Bruce.

Carol Ball spoke to the meeting giving an update on several matters including explaining the New Zealand Red Cross Annual Plan and her role as Humanitarian Services Manager. Carol was thanked and for her time attending the meeting.

Delicious soup and lunch followed.

The annual meeting was held after the preceding General meeting and lunch.

President opened the meeting by again welcoming all present including Carol Ball from Christchurch. Two Apologies were accepted as per General meeting and Minutes were read and confirmed. The President presented a comprehensive report of the Branch‘s activities which showed a busy and fruitful year. She noted especially the loss during the year of the Patroness Mrs Jean Dellow. Members were thanked for all their hard work and contribution to the Branch especially in assisting the

raising funds for Red Cross. Her report was received with acclamation. Treasurer Audrey Bruce presented the Annual Balance sheet and was applauded for her meticulous keeping of the financial books, which showed a healthy balance.

The President vacated the Chair and invited Carol Ball to chair the Election of Offices which are as follows: Patroness Moira Mackenzie. President Lynette Lovett. Vice President Ailsa Lovett.

Secretary Margaret Blair. Assistant Secretary Elizabeth Davies. Treasurer Audrey Bruce. Committee Office Holders plus Bev Reveley and Lyn Gutry. The Branch was congratulated by Carol Ball for all the work carried out during the year for Red Cross and wished it well for the coming year. The Annual Meeting closed and Patricia O’Brien gave a report. She had been invited by the Minister of Immigration, New Zealand Red Cross and United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to an event held at Parliament Buildings to mark World Refugee Day on 19 June. Various speakers spoke including Thomas Albrech UNHCR who had just started his tenure as Regional Representative for Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific based in Canberra Australia, after completing a term based in Syria. New Zealand Red Cross speakers spoke of the various programmes it has to resettle Refugees in New Zealand including the Refugee Health and Wellbeing Project and the Refugee Youth Resettlement Programme. Two former Refugees spoke of their experience of being a refugee and being resettled in New Zealand. Julia was from Myanmar and Daniel was from Colombia both in their twenties and were settling into the New Zealand way of life with remarkable fortitude and resilience and gratitude.

A total of 36 swimmers from throughout the Canterbury West Coast region were selected to take part in an intensive three day racing programme in Oama-

ru for the first stage of the Tri Series, including Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim team members Matthew Clough, Matthew Harford, Bailey Tait and Jay Martin, as well as coach, Shane Jones.

The swimmers were divided into three teams using a draft system, to compete for points over six sessions of racing at three venues over three days.

The teams were in Timaru on Tuesday and then came to Ashburton for the final sessions with the first last night and the final session this morning.

Joseph Parker is preparing to make waves on live television in the United States, his short-term plans considered so important his promoters Duco will turn down an invitation to train with the world’s top heavyweight Wladimir Klitschko.

Parker will fight in Pennsylvania on August 10 on the undercard of a fight headlined by Vyacheslav Glazkov, rated by many as the fourth best heavyweight in the world behind Klitschko, Kubrat Pulev and Tyson Fury. Parker’s opponent is yet to be determined but he is likely to be a prospect rather than a fading force.

Impressive fellow Kiwi light heavyweight Robert Berridge will also fight on the undercard at the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem.

A clinical Counties Manukau handed Ashburton Trust Mid Canterbury a 13th unsuccessful Ranfurly Shield challenge in Pukekohe last night.

A blistering start to the game and 24 unanswered points in the second spell handed the Steelers a 46-10 win.

Mid Canterbury went to Pukekohe to play and although they didn’t win, they certainly gave a good account of themselves, which bodes well for the season to come.

“We got a taste of the next level and the positive is that we showed at times we could match it. Moving forward to the Meads Cup defence we know where we want to be,” coach Glenn Moore said.

The big occasion looked to have gotten the better of the Hammers as they fell off tackles and Counties raced out to a 14-0 lead inside the opening five minutes.

Mid Canterbury then fronted up to stem the flow but, with the weight of possession, Counties ran in a third try.

After the slow start, the Hammers were on the back foot and a big score-line loomed before the challengers took control.

Hooker Jon Sharpe, who played in the last challenge in 2002, ran a superb angle close to the line to score untouched and Murray Williams landed the conversion and followed that up with a penalty to bring the scores back to 10-22.

On the stroke of halftime they nearly closed the gap again but Esera Lauina was unable to regather a Williams cross-kick agonisingly close to the line that could have completely turned the game on its head.

Buoyed by the strong finish to the first half the Hammers’ chances of finally lifting the shield were soon dashed as Counties added a repeat dose to start the second stanza.

Two quick tries pushed the Steelers out to 36-10 and they added another two before fulltime – but not before being asked plenty more questions from the Hammers before the final whistle.

“It certainly wasn’t the way we wanted to start, but we had to be pleased with the way we came back into the game, doing the things we wanted to do from the outset,” Moore said.

“Our lineout operated well and the scrum was under pressure at times, but the breakdown was a big difference.

“Still I think we gave a good account of ourselves in the end and can take plenty of positives moving forward.”
