‘I WANT TO DRIVE AGAIN’ Ricky May talks about the day he died on live TV

By Michael Guerin Methven harness racing legend, Ricky May can now laugh at the fact he died on live television last week.

He can’t laugh too hard though, because of the broken ribs he got from the guardian angel horsewoman who probably saved his live.

And even after one of the most shocking incidents in harness

racing history, the champion harness racing driver is adamant he will return to the sulky.

May stunned the racing world last Thursday when he collapsed mid-race and fell to the track when driving A G’s White Socks in the $30,000 Central Otago Cup at Omakau.

His heart had stopped and thousands watching live and on television feared the worst. Initially, they were right.

Ricky May was dead.

“The doctor in Dunedin Hospital told me later that I was gone,” May said from his Christchurch Hospital bed yesterday.

“I don’t know how long for.

They reckon it could have been 10 minutes. I don’t remember anything.

“I remember driving a winner earlier (two hours before the incident) and then the next thing I remember was waking up in hos-

pital with all my family there and that was two days later.”

From what the doctors at the hospital and those first to him on track have told him, May knows he had no heart beat when fellow driver Ellie Barron rushed to his side.

Barron, a trained physiotherapist, performed CPR on him, working so hard to keep his heart pumping she broke his ribs. She may also have saved his life.

“I spoke to Ellie yesterday and when she got to me I had no heart beat.

“She just took over ‘til the medics got there and used the paddles (defibrillators) on me.

“To be honest, I think Ellie was my saviour.”

May talks about the day he died on live TV From P1 First, one helicopter came, then another; the second was needed because it was equipped with the GPS needed to navigate through the fog to get the 61-year-old to Dunedin Hospital.

He was stabilised there before being flown to Christchurch Hospital a few days later where he had surgery to have a cardioverter defibrillator implanted in his chest yesterday.

The device delivers a shock through a wire which runs into a chamber of the heart and May will have it in his chest for the rest of his life in case his heart stops suddenly again.

May’s heart stopped without warning, and his official diagnosis was hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.

If you don’t know what that is you are not alone – May doesn’t really either.

It is a sometimes genetic condition that can see the heart muscles thicken even though the heart itself is healthy and can even affect young athletes at the peak of their physical prowess.

May was in shape and very active. He had no warning of what could happen and seconds before the incident was talking normally.

“The doctors told me there was nothing actually wrong with my heart and I didn’t have an cardiac arrest.

“They actually said I am too fit and the muscles around that area too strong.

“But to honest, I don’t know a lot about it, I’m still learning.”

What May does know is that he is alive to enjoy life with his wife Judy and his three children.

“I have a lot of people to thank.

staff at the two hospitals and the people who flew me from Dunedin to here.

“So many people have contacted us, it is quite overwhelming. And Judy has been a rock.

“But now it is done I want to get back to the farm, even though I won’t be able to work for a while. The boys are taking care of that at the moment.”

The farm at Methven may be home but the sulky is May’s domain, a throne from which he has driven a record seven New Zealand Cup wins among his 2949 winners in New Zealand alone.

He wants that get that number to 3000, maybe more.

“Yeah, I want to drive again,” he said.

“I didn’t think I would want to after the initial shock of it all but now I have had a chance to think about it I don’t want that to be my last race drive.

“So maybe I will travel less, maybe stay a little closer to home, but I will go back to driving.”

Less than a week after his heart stopped mid-race and a nation of racing fans held their breath, May can laugh now.

The nervous laugh of a man who has been given a second chance.

The laugh of the lucky.

“I suppose one day I will want to see the race, to see what happened. But not yet.”

But while he is a husband, father, farmer and friend, May is also inherently a race driver.

That can’t be scared out of him.

“You know, I am sure I would have won that race once he (A G’s White Socks) led,” he said wistfully.

In one sentence Ricky May confirms he will be back.

You can bet on it.

Cameron Courts was sold last year and a garage sale over the next two Saturdays will remove the property of its contents.

Garage sale to clear Cameron Courts

The former Cameron Courts resthome will open its doors two more times over the next two weekends but it won’t be to welcome a new influx of guests.

The beleaguered property, which was closed last year, and was then sold in December, will hold a garage sale on Saturday this weekend and next Saturday, in a bid to remove all the remaining items from the property before it is handed over to its new owners.

For former owners, Ashwin and Laureen Mani, it will again be a tough occasion after many years of hard work and dedication, but it’s a necessity – and everything must go.

“We’ll have everything laid out in the rooms and everything that is there is for sale,” Ashwin said.

“From bedding to furniture and everything in between, there will be plenty there for everyone and we’re keen to see the lot go out the door.”

Tomorrow’s sale will begin at 8am and run through until noon, while next weekend the intention is run the sale for a lot longer, potentially between 9am and 4pm.

“We’re conscious that some people aren’t back from holiday yet, so we want to give everyone the opportunity to come along.”

There will also be a number of kitchen items available for sale at the Philip Street address.

Mani said the intention was that the sale would be cash only, so encouraged people who were coming along to be prepared.

The rateable value of the land alone was $210,000 while the resthome had a rateable value of $1.720 million.

Respect the stop/go operators Stop/go operators are a common sight on the state highways over summer at emergency or planned road maintenance sites.

They are on the roadside all day, in all weather, in their hi-vis gear, directing the flow of traffic with a stop/go sign, a walkie talkie and a smile, but Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Central South Island system manager Peter Connors says it can be a dangerous job.

“A few road cones and a stop/ go sign are no protection from a speeding vehicle. We’re asking all motorists to please slow down and keep to temporary speed limits,” he said.

“We’re always concerned whenever stop/go operators report nearly being hit by vehicles passing too close or speeding through the work site.

“This is unacceptable driving behaviour because it puts everyone at risk – not just the stop/go operator, but other crew members and road users as well.”

“Our workers are mothers, fathers, brother and sisters, just doing their job. They go to work each day expecting to be able to go home safely at the end of it.

Safety is our highest priority, but we can’t keep our people safe if other people show no regard for their well-being.”

Connors says the point of a stop/go operation is to try to keep traffic moving in both directions when the state highway is reduced to one lane.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is asking people to slow down and respect stop/go operators.

“We try to keep delays to a minimum but sometimes traffic builds up. We want to get people on their way again as quickly as possible,” he said.

This summer the transport agency tackles its biggest main-

tenance renewal programme for the past 10 years, to keep the state highways safe and resilient.

“The summer months are our busiest time of year for road resurfacing and repairs, as we try to take advantage of the dry condi-

tions and long sunny days. This work is essential for the safety and resilience of the state highway network, so we ask motorists to be patient and understanding,” he said. “If you are stopped by a stop/go operator, use the time to

pause and relax, have a stretch or wind down the windows for some fresh air. You’ll soon be on your way again.”

“No-one ever gets to their destination faster by abusing or shouting at a stop/go operator.”

Support continues for roading safety petition

A petition calling for safety improvements to be made on Summit Road in Christchurch following the death of two Ashburton girls has received more than 5000 signatures.

The petition, which had received around 5600 at the time of writing, was started by Kelly Foster, a friend of Jason Alexander

who is the father of Sunmara and Tayla Alexander who died as a result of a crash on the road last year.

It calls for safety barriers to be added to the road and more deterrents to discourage young people from racing on the road.

“I propose the road be controlled during weekend evenings by a closed barrier system to prevent needless racing or speeding around these hills causing injury

and death. I hope every person that reads this can understand why change is needed,” the petition said.

“It is believed that this road is frequented each weekend by many young teen car enthusiasts and used to show off their cars.

“Those left behind by a moment’s distraction, speed, or just inexperience leaves a lifetime of grief and pain.”

In a post on his Facebook page, Alexander said Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel had been in touch to set up a meeting next week when she returns from holiday about the road and the petition.

The petition also said they would like to see changes to the rules and guidelines around our young getting their licences, with compulsory defensive driving

courses for all drivers obtaining licences.

Both girls were backseat passengers in a vehicle which went over a bank and burst into flames on Summit Road, in the Port Hills, about 11pm on November 27.

Tayla was killed instantly, while Sunmara was flown to Middlemore Hospital, where she later died on her 16th birthday as a result of her injuries.

Restricted fire season soon

Anyone that will need a fire permit this summer is being asked to get their permit requests in early with a restricted fire season expected to be declared within the next few weeks.

Fire and emergency New Zealand deputy principal rural fire officer Don Geddes said it was likely that they declare a restricted fire season in a week or the following couple of weeks depending on the weather.

“We had that rain prior to Christmas that set us up for the holiday break but we are still looking to go in at least a week or the next couple after that,” he said.

The restricted fire season means that anyone intending to light an outdoor fire will first need a permit from Fenz.

“I would still encourage scrubland farmers to get in and not wait to do their permits as we know there will be a deluge when we go to a restricted fire season,” he said.

So far this season less than 30 people have gotten in early and applied for permits, with that number expected to skyrocket once the restricted season begins.

Some farmers are already beginning to harvest, and Geddes said he has spoken to one farmer who is planning on having a burn-off soon.

Spa Pool Closed The EA Networks Centre spa pool will be unavailable to users from Monday, January 13, as staff begin working to repair the pool filter.

The Ashburton District Council has discovered broken parts inside the sand filter that is causing the sand to be pushed into the spa pool.

The filter will need to be drained and sand removed to access the damaged parts, and council chief executive Hamish Riach says the repairs are expected to put the spa out of action for one to two weeks. The EA Networks Centre spa will close at 7pm on January 13.

People are being urged to get their fire permit applications in with a restricted fire season expected to be declared in the coming weeks.

weekly meetings with Fire and Emergency New Zealand staff from around the country about how the process is working and the small problems that sporadically crop up.

Royal couple drop a bombshell NZME While the world is still reeling from the bombshell that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are quitting as “senior royals” – the situation has just gotten messier.

Former palace press secretary Dickie Arbiter said the move was “unprecedented” and a “breakdown in the royal family”.

“Harry was an absolute bonus to the royal family. He had a tremendous attitude to his work.

This is a declaration of war on the family,” a senior source told The Sun. “There is fury over how they’ve done this without any thought for the implications for the institution. The Queen is deeply upset. The Prince of Wales and Duke of Cambridge are incandescent with rage.

“Courtiers can’t believe it.

There are so many unanswered questions but they’ve just up and done it without a thought

for anyone else.

“The plan was for there to discuss it and work out a way that works for everyone in the family.”

Royal expert Camilla Tominey also told the Today show that the Palace would have been “blindsided” by the statement.

“It is true to say that the Queen and the palace had no idea this was coming which then explains the statement which is pretty hastily written, kind of one sentence line and that, for me, smacks of a kind of instant PR reaction – ‘we better get something out but we haven’t got anything pre-prepared’,” she said.

“What’s even more interesting about that statement in saying it is in the ‘early stages’, clearly not according to the Sussexes who have already remodelled and written reams of copy for their new website talking about their relationship with the media and how they want to change it, how they want to change the rules around funding, how they want to change the way they do their charitable work.

“Well, that smacks of something that has been several weeks in the making.”

It certainly appears so, based on the depth of information and pre-planning that has gone into the couple’s new personal website, which was officially launched yesterday.

Child Cancer Foundation is calling for volunteers to help out with its annual street appeal on the February 28 and 29, 2020. The appeal is the biggest annual fundraising event on Child Cancer Foundation’s fundraising calendar and depends on the support of volunteers nationwide to successfully collect funds.

Every week, three children are diagnosed with cancer in New Zealand. Child Cancer Foundation provides tailored support to these children and their families without any government support so every donated dollar really counts.

Last year, approximately 600 volunteers took to the streets to collect donations. The collection raised an incredible $232,913.

Forestry death One person has died after a tree fell on them in a Gisborne forestry operation. Emergency services were called to the scene, located in Raukumara, just after midday yesterday. A police spokeswoman confirmed to the media that one person had died. WorkSafe had been notified of a forestry fatality in Ruatoria, a spokeswoman confirmed.

Making roads safer A police officer on patrol in Otago decided that, rather than stopping people and giving them tickets, he’d prune the hedges of a roadside bush and increase their visibility instead. The Otago office has been applauded on Reddit for his actions, with people referring to him as a contender for “top cop 2020”. Senior sergeant Glenn Wilkinson was photographed cutting the bush on the side of the Crown Range Road. According to the officer, he was just trying to make the community safer.

Injured boy improves A 4-year-old boy, who was found critically injured at a house where two adults were found dead, is now stable in hospital. On December 30, Sherine Nath, 32, and her husband Ricky Nath, 34, were found dead at a house in Papatoetoe. Their deaths have been referred to the Coroner.

Yesterday, nearly two weeks after the tragedy, a police spokesman said the 4-year-old boy was in a serious but stable condition at Auckland’s Starship Hospital. The child was found critically injured inside a bedroom at the house in Papatoetoe.

800g blue cod fillets, skinned, boned and diced into 3cm chunks 20mls olive oil 1 red onion, diced 1 clove garlic, minced 1t green curry paste 4cm ginger root, grated or cut into small matchsticks 1/2 red chilli, finely sliced (optional) 5cm lemon grass stalk, sliced and pounded in a mortar and pestle 1 tin coconut cream 1 whole coriander root 2T fish sauce (approximately, adjust to taste) 1/4 C water (if necessary) Chopped coriander, to garnish

■■ Add green curry paste, ginger, chilli and lemon grass and cook for 1 minute to release flavours, stirring with a wooden spoon.

■■ Pour in coconut cream, add whole coriander root and simmer gently for 15 minutes.

■■ Place fish into the sauce and simmer for 5 minutes until cooked. Add a little water if the

consistency is too thick. Add fish sauce to taste (in Thai cooking this is the equivalent of salt), and remove coriander root.

■■ Serve in warm bowls accompanied with a side dish of steamed jasmine rice, garnished with chopped coriander leaves.

New Year’s Day Run As they have now done many times before, the Vintage Car started their motoring year with a run on New Year’s Day. Club Secretary Colin Sweetman, who supplied the photos, says: “We had a great time, with those taking part asked to identify landmarks along the route, which traversed roads to the West and North of Ashburton”.

All made it to the final destination in the Ashburton Domain for a barbecue.

The Vintage Car club will stage its 51st Annual Rally on Saturday January 25 2020.

Financial woes for McWilliams Wines NZME Australia’s sixth-largest wine company – which has been in its founding family’s hands for 141 years and six generations – has revealed it has appointed voluntary administrators.

Late Wednesday it was announced that McWilliam’s Wines was facing an uncertain future after appointing KPMG partners Gayle Dickerson, Tim Mableson and Ryan Eagle to the job.

The much-loved unlisted and publicly-owned company’s range includes the McWilliam’s and Mount Pleasant wine brands, and it is also the sole Australian distributor for renowned global brands such as Champagne Taittinger, Mateus, Henkell and Mionetto.

Last January, the Financial Review reported the company’s sales revenue for 2017-18 was $AU87.4 million, citing documents lodged with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

That figure represented a 13 per cent drop following a period of heavy losses.

Restructuring services partner at KPMG Australia, Gayle Dickerson, said the goal was to save the iconic company.

“We are in the initial phase of the administration process where our priority is to undertake an immediate assessment of the business and its operations,” she said in a statement.

“The company will continue to operate as normal, and we are working with the McWilliams’ family with the support of its employees while we work hard to try to preserve one of Australia’s oldest winemakers.

“We are seeking expressions of interest to recapitalise or acquire the group to take this heritage brand forward in the future both locally and globally. .”

The overall price index was 2.8 per cent higher for the first GDT auction of 2020, with key product group whole milk powder finishing the session 1.7 per cent higher.

Metlifecare has had steady gains following a takeover announcement.

The offer price announced was NZ$7.00 per share, giving a total consideration of approximately NZ$1.5bn.

Energy shares fell as oil prices lost some of the recent gains with investor uncertainty persisting amid the US-Iran standoff.

However, on Wednesday Donald Trump said ‘Iran appears to be standing down’ following its missile strikes on US military bases and signalled that the US would not respond with military force to Iran’s attacks on American forces in Iraq, in attempt to de-escalate the tensions.

crash in Iran.

The manufacturer of commercial jetliners took a hit following the plane crash that killed all 176 people on board a Ukrainian plane shortly after it took off from Tehran International airport on Wednesday.

Boeing shares were down more than 2 per cent following the crash. The Ukrainian Embassy in Iran initially attributed the crash to a technical issue, however, later said the cause was unknown and under investigation.

Boeing faced problems last year after two fatal crashes caused the grounding of its 737 Max jet worldwide.

Tesla is now worth more than Ford and General Motors combined.

The company, which specialises in electric car manufacturing, has hit a market cap of $US88.7bn.

This is over $US2bn more than the combined market capitalisation of Ford and General Motors, which together have a market capitalisation of $US86.2bn.

Tesla’s share price gained 25.7 per cent in 2019. Founder Elon Musk also unveiled Tesla’s new Model Y electric sports utility vehicle program on Tuesday in its new Shanghai factory, where the company delivered its first cars built outside the United States to the public.

Things are really starting to fire up W

hen you think of summertime it’s usually sunshine, crystal-clear blue skies and endless warm days.

It’s generally always positive stuff too, people seem to like the warmer days a little more than what they do the corresponding colder ones of winter.

But, both come with their dangers and we’re closing in on one of the most dangerous times of the year with fire restrictions now looming for the Ashburton District.

Don’t be alarmed though, the restrictions are a good thing. They serve a very real purpose, ensuring safety in our community and playing a big role in restricting the amount of time our volunteer

Due to the rural nature of our landscape, the risk of fire is a little more heightened than some other places around the South Island.

Long flat paddocks as far as the eye can see, most growing product that, when given plenty of direct sunshine, become tinder dry and act as an accelerant should a

flame or spark strike them. So, by putting restrictions in place the danger around that happening is significantly reduced.

This time of the year is also around the time we start to see massive plumes of smoke billowing up into the air as our rural community begins to burn off paddocks.

It can make for an impressive sight seeing a number of different paddocks going up at the same time, but it is always a contentious issue between the urban community and their rural counterparts.

It will, without fail, draw some comments from people about why farmers do it and this year we’re really keen to put all the

information out into the open so that everyone knows exactly what’s going on.

But we need some help.

We need some of our rural community to step forward and be willing to talk us through the art of burning off a paddock.

So, what we’d like to do this year is open the gate, so to speak.

We’re on the lookout for a farmer, or a group of farmers, who’d be willing to help the cause and spread the positive message about burning off a paddock.

We’d want to detail the process from start to finish. Talk about why it’s done, how it’s done and what it means for a farmer being able to undertake an age-old tradition.

There’d be photographs, naturally. Perhaps even a video, so we’d need a reasonably confident farmer – but if you are the right person for the job, or potentially know who that right person might be, then please do get in touch through the contact details on the next page.

We see and hear a lot of bad and negative comments about burn-offs here, each and every year, so it’s time to put the correct information out to the public so that there is a better understanding of it all and hopefully the chance of reducing some of those detractors by showing them how it’s done.

he Hooper family spent two weeks at the Rangitata Camping Ground over the Chrissy break.

It was our first official stay in Nigel Nomad, our caravan.

It was an awesome couple of weeks and I thought I’d recap with some pros and cons from the holiday.

Pro. No erection. I always found our tent comfortable to stay in. It was roomy and the inflatable bed was comfy enough. It was just the erecting and de-erecting of the thing that drove me bonkers.

Con. Our first attempt at attaching the awning, probably took as much time as erecting the tent.

Pro. The caravan will stay set up and ready for us to pop down for the weekend for the rest of the summer.

Fishing Con. The fishing was rubbish! I’ve never claimed to be any good at fishing and often say it would be a very unlucky fish that got caught by me, but this year I didn’t have it on my own.

I fish in the sea and chase elephant fish and rig and all I caught was a tiddler that went back in to be caught next year. The local experts tell me it was mostly down to the river flood recently and all the fresh water pushing the crabs away and therefore the fish.

Pro. I popped in to see the mayor of Rangitata, Gary Strachan. He’s a top bloke and always very happy to dish out some words of advice for a fishing muppet like me. After a good catch-up, he sent me back to the campsite with a big feed of whitebait, smoked eel and smoked trout.

Pro. There’s always next weekend. Hopefully the fish will return again in the near future and we can hook into a few when we pop back down to get away from it all in Nigel. Hopefully, most weekends.

Cellphone reception Pro. The cellphone reception at Rangi is rubbish! This meant a good break from work emails

and messages.

Con (pro for Manda). It made working on my virtual stable (Off and Pacing phone app I’m addicted to) very difficult.

Pro. A quick daily trip up the hill to a nice clearing, overlooking the huts, usually dished up three bars of wifi and got the stable work done.

Con. The work emails and messages were still waiting for me when I got back to work on Monday.

Eating Pro. Rangi is just far enough away that you wouldn’t duck in for takeaways because you can’t be bothered cooking.

Con. Being on holiday apparently means you’re on holiday from the Keto lifestyle and you can tuck right into all of the 47 jumbo-sized packs of crisps,

Burger Rings and the likes, that the family has taken camping.

Either that or Santa has all of a sudden turned into an A-hole because all he left me this year was three extra kilograms.

New Year’s Day Con. Hangover.

Pro. Running races and family fun over at the huts.

Con. Maddy finished midfield in her first ever running race.

Pro. She was very slow out of the gate but stormed home late.

If it had been a mobile start I think she would have won. There were enough positive signs from her first outing to signal, that with a bit of standing-start practise she can dominate for the next 10 years.

“First time over 2000m for The Bumper, it’s probably a bit of a step up for him, but he certainly handles the bad ground and he will be a good runner’s chance I am picking,” Tyler said.

“What’s Up Alf was a bit like The Bumper on the first day, he went a really good race. He’s up to 2000m now and he has got a placing over the trip before.

“It’s going to be a real test for The Bumper and What’s Up Alf, but hopefully they can see it out.”

NZ’s first synthetic track under way

By Michael Guerin New Zealand’s first synthetic race track has started construction which means thoroughbred racing could return to Cambridge next year.

The long-awaited construction of what will initially be a new training surface, then trial track, but eventually a race track started earlier this week as excavators moved in.

It is a pivotal step in the restructuring of New Zealand racing, providing a consistent winter racing surface with the ultimate aim of ending bog track meetings in the region, or worse, those meetings which have to be cancelled because of the extreme wet.

The synthetic track is one of the key strategies around venues for racing in New Zealand raised in the Messara report.

While some aspects of racing’s future venues plan are still very much up in the air it will be encouraging for industry participants that construction has begun at Cambridge and the track should be open for training, after some testing, by July or August.

The synthetic surface will be Polytrack, which is the brand name for a specific type of synthetic track.

Avantage pleases Avantage pleased her connections with her final hit-out at Matamata on Tuesday ahead of her next assignment, the Telegraph Handicap next weekend. The Group One-winning daughter of Fastnet Rock completed an exhibition gallop in the hands of Opie Bosson, who was pleased with her efforts over the 1000m trip. The Jamie Richards-trained four-year-old finished runner-up in the Listed Hallmark Stud Handicap at Ellerslie on Boxing Day firstup and Bosson believes she has improved a lot since that run. “She was always going to come on heaps for the run at Ellerslie and she’s a strong mare now,” he said.

NZ Racing Desk Lochan Ora will be vying to make it back-to-back cup wins at Omoto Racecourse on Saturday when he lines-up in the Omoto Cup. The eight-year-old gelding won the Greymouth Cup on the same track on Sunday and will make an unexpected return this weekend after an inspection of Kumara’s track on Monday resulted in their meeting being transferred to Omoto on Saturday.

Kelvin Tyler, who trains Lochan Ora in partnership with daughter Aimee, is hoping it will remain a happy stomping ground for his charge after his winning result on Sunday.

“It was a really good effort that day and he seems to have come through it well,” he said.

Tyler admitted Lochan Ora wasn’t racing up to expectations prior to that run, but said a small freshen-up has revitalised the son of Towkay.

“He had been a bit disappointing, but we freshened him up slightly. He travelled up really well and I was quietly confident with him.”

Tyler is looking forward to the race but said he is hoping for a bit of improvement in the track, which was rated a Soft 7 on

Randwick has a Polytrack surface inside its racetracks and champion NZ jockey James McDonald is a huge fan.

“A lot of winners are starting to come off that Randwick Polytrack now because it is a consistent surface for them to train on,” McDonald said.

“And they are good to ride on.”

The construction, which started earlier in the week, will see the main Cambridge grass trial track dug up and over 10,000 square metres of the Polytrack surface laid.

That is expected to take until July, but with Cambridge having other training tracks, trainers are working with the club to ensure horses currently in training are not greatly disadvantaged.

“The trainers have been great, very supportive,” Cambridge Jockey Club chief executive Mark Campin said.

“We would have liked to have started earlier to be finished for the start of this winter but we are under way now.

“We had a Maori blessing of the track after the trials on Monday too.”

The new surface will eventually allow for consistent training in all weather conditions and Cambridge will have a special condi-

tioner to maintain it.

“We dig up what is now the trials track and put in the new surface and then once that is finished we will start it off slowly,” Campin said. “But eventually, once it is bedded in, we should be able to have horses trained on it, then we can have it conditioned and trial that same day. Theoretically, you could condition it and race the next day.

“A lot of people have worked to get us to this stage and we are thankful we have a Racing Minister in Winston Peters who cares enough about the industry.”

While the track could be in full training use by August, the Cambridge facility will need some other work, including resource consents, before the Polytrack can be used for actual race meetings.

The new track will not be programmed for major or Saturday race meetings, but for predominantly mid-week or smaller meetings, termed industry meetings, in the winter months.

That will help take the workload off other northern tracks that struggle under wet conditions.

“First and foremost it is a training and trials track for the over 1000 horses we have in work here

at Cambridge,” Campin said.

“But we hope to race those type of race meetings here by May, 2021, exactly how many per season we don’t know yet.

“That will require some more work to bring the other facilities up to raceday standard. Things like television camera and stewards’ towers, the jockeys’ room and we are looking into options now around how to look after racegoers.

“But we are not talking about big crowds for mid-week winter meetings.

“We had a huge number of horses at the trials here on Monday and the crowd would have been just as big as a mid-week race meeting in winter.

“But yes, we are working on plans at the moment to look after people who come along and, because a lot of the race meetings could be in winter, give them somewhere warm to enjoy the day.”

The new track will be around 2000m with its sweeping bends having a camber of approximately six degrees which will provide more even transition into a shorter home straight than most New Zealand tracks because of restrictions imposed by the property boundaries.

Ocean Park gelding Bumper Blast will step up to stakes level for the first time at Flemington on Saturday when he contests the Listed Manifold Stakes. The New Zealand-bred four-year-old has recorded three wins from just five starts, including a last start win over 1400m at Flemington and trainer Robert Hickmott said working on the beach has helped extend Bumper Blast’s long preparation. “He has been terrific, we have given him plenty of beach work. He has been in the stable just on 11 months now, so he has had a long prep, but looking at him physically he is probably the strongest he has been.“ Saturday’s race will be Bumper Blast’s sixth start this preparation and Hickmott said he will see how he pulls up after Saturday before deciding whether he gives him one more run.

Smart mare fine Star mare Belle Of Montana has been cleared of any injury or niggles after her uncharacteristic gallop at Alexandra Park on New Years’ Eve. She paced roughly and broke heading into the first bend and was later terminally checked on the final bend when back in the field and racing roughly again. Trainer Barry Purdon says that, after a worrying period, he’s satisfied there is nothing wrong.

“There were a couple of sleepless nights, but everything is really good with her now. One of the pins came out of her shorteners early and it unbalanced her. We’ve had her checked out and she’s definitely sound ... We’ve turned the page on that and she’ll race at Auckland on the 17th before heading across to Melbourne.”

Surgery for driver Injured horseman Todd MacFarlane has been overwhelmed by well-wishers after his nasty accident at Cambridge on Sunday. MacFarlane is still in Waikato Hospital, along with Matthew White, after the pair and Jay Abernethy were injured. His wrist was broken and dislocated and he banged his head, both having fairly serious consequences. “Obviously I had concussion, but there are no concerns there now. A few bruises and grazes on the face, but some might say that’s an improvement,” he joked. “I am waiting on an operation on my hand and arm at the moment but am getting well looked after.”

Phillips lifts lid on Australian sledging NZME The Black Caps third test against Australia brought up many firsts for batsman Glenn Phillips.

It was his first test match; he scored his first test 50 and got his first taste of Australian sledging.

The Australian national team is often chatty in the field, with those around the batsman looking for ways to put him off his game, be it a humorous exchange or insulting. But when it came to sledging Phillips, there wasn’t a lot of direct sledging that could

be done.

“Other than looking like Smudge [Australian batsman Steve Smith], I don’t think they had a hell of a lot on me considering they haven’t seen me too much,” he said.

“So a lot of the chat was just between them and the men around the lid. They talk a lot of smack, but it’s not anything directed at me – it’s more just noise.

“A lot of it is actually quite entertaining and quite funny. It’s good to be out there amongst that sort of fighting environment

and to be able to experience how those boys go about things.”

He wasn’t the only Black Caps player to get an earful during the tour, with Australian bowler Mitchell Starc doing his best to get under Jeet Raval’s skin in the first test in Perth – which Australia won by 296 runs.

Raval, who has been going through a horror run of form which has seen him fail to pass 33 in first-class cricket since February, had mustered just one run from 18 balls when Starc chimed in with some harsh words.

“Wouldn’t wanna ruin it – the last chance of your career,” Starc taunted him.

“Christmas is pretty good when you have it off though,” Starc added, referring to the next test between the two teams – the Boxing Day test in Melbourne.

“They do good lunches for Christmas in Melbourne.”

Three balls later, and Starc’s words proved prescient, as he produced a superb delivery which spooned off the shoulder of Raval’s bat to Nathan Lyon at point.

Tom Latham out for a month with finger injury RNZ

Black Caps opening batsman Tom Latham will be out of action for a month after an X-ray confirmed a fracture to his right pinky finger.

The injury occurred on the fourth day of the third Test in Sydney when Latham claimed the final catch before the Australian declaration.

Latham will target a return to fitness in time to be available for the upcoming one-day series against India in early February.

Coach Gary Stead also provided an injury and illness update as the Black Caps Test squad prepared to depart Sydney for home.

“Matt Henry has had his broken leftthumb splinted and will require around a month for it to fully heal. In this time he will still be able to practise bowling and will look at a return to play early next month.

“Kane, Henry and Mitch are regaining their health after being struck down with Influenza A and will continue be monitored as they slowly rebuild their strength and fitness.”

The Black Caps T20 squad to face India will be named late next week.

New Zealand meet India in five T20 internationals, three ODI’s and two Tests – the first T20 is at Eden Park on 24 January.

England captain Joe Root and his South African counterpart Faf du Plessis have both backed five-day tests, despite their cricket boards advocating for a reduction to four-day games in the future.

England beat South Africa by 189 runs in the second test at Newlands on Tuesday to level the four-match series at 1-1 after the hosts lasted almost 138 overs in their second innings, but could not see out eight more that would have earned them a draw.

The match went into the last hour of the fifth day, providing drama aplenty in Cape Town after both sides had toiled hard in search of their desired results.

“I like five-day test cricket. I’ll leave at that, otherwise I’ll get in trouble,” Root told reporters in the wake of the thrilling Newlands win.

Du Plessis was more forthcoming on a day in which Cricket South Africa sent out a statement in which they officially backed the plan four-day tests.

“I am a fan of test cricket going five days,” he said. “The great draws of the game always go to five days.

“I’m not speaking about the other stuff that comes to fourday cricket. I understand there is a lot of money being burned on five-day cricket because a lot of games are not going to the fifth day.

“There will always be an opinion on both sides, but I am still a purist of the game and have been part of some great draws that went five days.

“There would definitely not have been a result in four days on the wicket we have just played on now.”

The International Cricket Council is set to discuss the idea of making tests four-day games to ease a crammed international calendar and reduce player workload.

England have said they will support the idea after 2023, Australia are to give serious consideration to the plan, while South Africa have already made up their minds.

“Cricket South Africa’s official policy to support four-day Test match cricket,” CSA said in a statement on Tuesday.

The powerful Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to offer an opinion, but India captain Virat Kohli said he was totally against the plan.

“I am not a fan,” Kohli told reporters. “I think the intent will not be right then because then you will speak of three-day tests, I mean where do you end?

“Then you will speak of test cricket disappearing. I don’t endorse that at all.”

Cruden leaves door open on All Black return NZME He’s back, but how far will Aaron Cruden’s return to New Zealand rugby take him?

The 50-test Cruden, who has just turned 31, was non-committal when asked if he harboured dreams of returning to the All Blacks with the new Super Rugby season just weeks away.

He is only on a one year deal, before playing in Japan for Kobelco Steelers, but one thing can always lead to another.

Cruden said European rugby had changed him as a player, and it will be fascinating to see if the mercurial first five-eighth has become the sort of string puller who might still interest new All Black boss Ian Foster.

After a tough injury-hit stint in France Cruden is back with the Chiefs, under new coach Warren Gatland, after a two year absence during which he played for the French club Montpelier.

As the All Blacks re-build under Foster, and with debate still strong over the best position for Beauden Barrett, who will make a late start to the season, there might be an opening for Cruden if he has a great season.

Fronting the media after a Chiefs training Cruden indicated his main focus for now was returning the Chiefs to the Super Rugby winner’s circle and helping guide the many younger players in the squad.

“I just want to contribute to each environment I’m in and haven’t thought too much about the

All Blacks,” he said.

“I’ve been removed from that environment for a few seasons and there have been a lot of changes in that scene as well.”

Cruden’s return to the spotlight is close at hand. The Chiefs open their campaign against the Blues at Eden Park in three weeks’ time.

He last played on November 18, and was given a small pre-Christmas break after he and his family arrived back in early December.

Returning to the Chiefs, where he won two titles was always his priority. It was the only New Zealand franchise who made an official approach although All Black and Hurricanes midfield back Ngani Laumape had enquired about his intentions. He didn’t rule out a return to the Manawatu side either.

But for now, it was all about the Chiefs.

“Montpelier was an awesome and the rugby was very different to what we are used to in New Zealand,” he said.

“They have their way of doing things, the French style. It took me out of my comfort zone a bit, and I learnt a different style of rugby.”

Asked about the differences, Cruden said: “Controlling the middle third of the filed …my approach has always been a positive one, in New Zealand that’s how we like to play.

“In Europe they can be very pragmatic about the way they hold each zone. It was really cool to go over there and learn a bit more about that.

“They probably understand times when you can put the foot on the accelerator, when you have to pull back, and probably try to control things a little bit more.

“I’m not saying by any means that I’m perfect now, but that was one of the bigger learnings.”

Davis turns down $220m offer NZME NBA star Anthony Davis declined a four-year, $NZ220 million max extension from the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday and intends to become an unrestricted free agent in July, Yahoo Sports reported.

Yahoo reported that Davis’s agent, Rich Paul, informed the team that his client wants to focus on this season.

Davis has a player option of $NZ43.2 million for next season but is expected to decline it to become a free agent.

He will be eligible to sign a five-year, $NZ304 million max

deal in the off-season.

According to the Yahoo report, Davis is expected to remain with the Lakers beyond this season.

He has already amassed $US94.5m ($NZ142m) in salaries since his rookie season in 2012-13.

The Lakers acquired Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans in the off-season for a package that included forward Brandon Ingram, point guard Lonzo Ball and combo guard Josh Hart.

Davis, a six-time All-Star, is averaging 27.7 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.6 blocked shots in 34 games.

A group of keen local golfers are getting the perfect opportunity to brush up and fine-tune their golfing skills as part of the Methven Summer School.

Nine golfers have been taking part in the three-day course at the Methven Golf Club with golf

pro, Jason Tilley, who is aiding players in sharpening their play on the greens, fairways and in some cases, the rough.

A popular part of the summer school each year, the course is generally always fully booked with aspiring players using the opportunity to tap into Tilley’s knowledge of the game.

The aim of the course is to tar-

get the most problematic areas of players games and to, ultimately, reduce scores. Tilley achieves this through drills and exercises specific to individual players to try to give the feeling of the correct fundamentals.

As well as that, Tilley also works through equipment, club selection on the course and playing out of difficult situations –

covering, course play, driving, fairway shots, iron play, pitching, chipping, putting, bunker play and trouble shots.

Tilley is a regular fixture at the summer school, having tutored for the past nine years.

A NZPGA golf professional for more than 20 years, Tilley’s students over almost a decade have benefited from his skill sets

through an enjoyable and beneficial manner. based at the Currently Christchurch Golf Club, Tilley was a finalist for the PGA Professional Coach of the Year back in 2018 and currently works with his home club as well as a number of schools, other clubs and businesses within the Canterbury region.
