Spending up large was no guarantee of success at the ballot box in last year’s local body elections. Biggest spender among the 37 candidates was Angus McKay who was making a bid for a third term as the district’s mayor. He spent $11,427 on his campaign, but was defeated by challenger Donna Favel. McKay’s campaign spending was dominated by mailbox drops of flyers and door knocking.
He spent more than half of his campaign budget on flyer printing and delivery. The remainder was spent on radio and newspaper advertising. Favel’s campaign bill totalled $5520 and was dominated by social media exposure. Her commitment to traditional media was light – just $1700 on radio and print advertising and $1600 on flyers. Both Favel and McKay splashed out on ensuring they presented a good public image, spending $350 and $575, respectively on professional photography ser-
vices. Per vote, McKay’s campaign was the most expensive of the election. He gained 4993 votes at a cost of $2.29 per vote. Favel’s 6366 votes cost her 87 cents each. She also stood as a district councillor, securing 5504 votes and taken over her entire vote count the cost per vote dropped to 38 cents.
