Students of the future in the Ashburton District could be part of a three tier education system that involves primary, middle and secondary schools.

And while it might cause a little angst and unease, a new review of the way schools are run is a golden opportunity for teachers to look to the best possible future in education, says Ashburton Intermediate principal Brent Gray.

An independent taskforce has released wide-ranging recommendations for change and among those is a sug-

gestion that intermediate schools could be scrapped and a new middle school, catering for students from Years 7 to 10, could be created. And that’s an idea that has merit, Gray said.

The middle school option had been talked about by staff at Ashburton Intermediate, Gray said, and there was a general feeling that there could be some merit in the idea.

“The crucial thing they’re talking about is relationships and we build those now, but it could help to have students in one place for a bit longer,” he said.

The review is recommending the middle school option because the two years a student spent at intermediate school was seen as “unnecessarily disruptive of learning pathways”.

Parishioners to vote on future

Members of two Presbyterian parishes are being asked to show their support for a merger that would see Hampstead’s St Paul’s and Tinwald’s St James look to a shared future.

On December 16 members of both congregations will vote on a merger that would see the two churches remain open but they would be run as one. It’s a model that’s been well tested in other areas, said Village Church minister

Martin Stewart, who is convenor of the merger committee.

Already there had been conversations with members of both parishes where people were able to ask questions and air concerns, Stewart said.

“There’s already a lot of positivity and the two churches have been working together for a number of years. They operate with a joint parish council but they still have separate accounts. There’s still duplication and with that comes an ‘us and them’ when in

fact, in almost every other respect they operate as a we.”

The possible merger was initiated by members of the two churches, Stewart said.

Like many churches, congregation numbers at both were dropping, he said.

Anyone who was a member of either church could vote on the merger, but to do so, they would need to attend church on that day. Proxy votes will not be accepted.

The merger vote will be held at

a combined service at St Pauls at 10am on December 16. Members of each congregation will vote on different coloured paper. The merger will be a majority decision and that majority will need to be quite clear, Stewart said.

St Paul’s church was closed several months ago after a seismic assessment gave it a D grading. Church guidelines dictate it can no longer be used until it is brought up to an acceptable seismic rating. Services are being held in the church hall.

In brief Body found New Zealand police believe they have found the body of missing British backpacker Grace Millane.

The discovery was made by officers who Grace Millane were combing an area of bush near a road in the western outskirts of Auckland, about 25km from where the 22-year-old tourist was last spotted entering a central city hotel with a man on December 1. Detective Inspector Scott Beard told reporters remains found at the scene on Sunday had not been formally identified but were believed to be those of Ms Millane.

Hit by train A person has died after being hit by a train in Auckland yesterday.

Emergency services are still at the scene which has closed the track near the Woodward Road crossing in Mt Albert. The incident happened around 12.30pm, a police spokeswoman said.

Chch homicide Christchurch police have launched a homicide investigation after a man was admitted to hospital and died of his injuries on Saturday night. Detective Senior Sergeant Sarah Illingworth said yesterday police would continue to make inquiries to the death of the 25-year-old. “The man was dropped at the hospital in a vehicle. Police are today searching a number of addresses in relation to the incident.”

The annual family fun-day celebration showcased the vintage village and its attractions with elderly trains plying the rails providing rides for festival goers and country musicians setting toes tapping. While crowds enjoyed wandering around the historic village, the highlight of the day for many was a visit by Santa. Among those enjoying a day out in the sunshine was seven-year-old Grace Levy.

Community comes together for Christmas

Music, dancing and a fireworks display that lit up the night sky ushered in the Christmas season in Ashburton on Saturday night.

Ashburton Domain became the festive heart of the Ashburton District when the annual Christmas in the Park event attracted between 8000 and 9000 people, and the huge team of volunteers couldn’t be happier with the way the night ran, said one of its co-ordinators, Carmen Lye. From 4pm people started arriving, spreading out picnic rugs, setting up chairs and unwrapping parcels of fish and chips or picnic hampers.

“They were staking their claim to viewing spots and it was such a lovely night they were happy just sitting back and watching things being set up on stage,” Lye said.

While entertainment started at 7pm, people continued to arrive throughout the evening, ready for the spectacular finale firewoks display. This could be seen in the night sky across Ashburton.

From the moment the lights were turned on, on stage, the night was one of non-stop action, with a 50-strong team of dancers from the Life Dance Academy leading the show. They were followed by a strong line-up of local singers while the house band kept the music flowing throughout the night.

Christmas in the Park took a break last year, and Lye and fellow event co-ordinator Lisa Anderson opted for a totally local event this year. And it paid off, Lye said, with some superb performances.

The hit of the night, inevitably, was Santa, she said.

“It was like a massive mosh pit

down there with kids screaming and even bowling over a fence.”

The event was one for all ages and it was great to see so many people coming together to celebrate a community event, Lye said.

For the huge team of volunteers involved, the event did not end when the last spectator left the domain oval.

The 50-plus volunteers rolled up their sleeves, undertaking a massive clean-up job as well as dismantling lights, sound systems and onstage props.

“Putting on an event like this wouldn’t be possible without a huge team of volunteers, so many people were working away behind the scenes,” she said.

The Mega Mitre 10-sponsored family event was organised by the Ashburton Christian Ministers’ Association.

Santa was a big hit at Christmas in the Park on Saturday night.

Council to get tough on owners

Owners of the Ashburton District’s earthquake-prone or potentially earthquake-prone buildings are about to be put on notice – fail to display a placard declaring your building’s status and you will be fined.

Placard notices were sent to owners of all affected buildings in September, council environmental services group manager Jane Donaldson said, but to date virtually none had chosen to erect those placards.

Compliance was not an option, she said.

It is required by the Ministry of Business and Enterprise. It is establishing a list of all earthquake-prone buildings in every area of New Zealand and this will be available to the public.

To date there are 75 buildings in the Ashburton District that have been assessed as earthquake-prone and council staff has had discussions with around 24 owners.

“We are pleased to see that owners of 13 buildings have started

the process of getting consents or quotes to strengthen or demolish,” Donaldson said.

In addition there are 53 potentially earthquake-prone buildings.

These are buildings where an engineer’s assessment report has yet to be filed with the district council.

Donaldson said it was good to see that progress was being made with owners filing reports and the number in this bracket had declined by eight since September.

“Our next steps are to re-issue placards via registered mail, or

in person if necessary. These will include details relating to placard display timeframe requirements.”

The placards are expected to be delivered in early January and owners will have two weeks to have these on display or an infringement notice would be issued to the building owner, she said.

Tardy owners could face a fine of $1000 for failing to attach a notice or if that notice became illegible. If a building owner or another user occupied an earthquake-prone building contrary to

a council notice, the owner could be fined $2000.

The Building Act requires territorial authorities to record and update certain information about buildings they have determined as earthquake-prone in the MBE earthquake-prone register.

Those details can include map location information and images and a copy of the earthquake-prone notice.

Details about the district’s earthquake-prone buildings have yet to be uploaded onto the national register.

Consistency pays off for restaurants Education changes

If you are a fan of tearing in to a succulent steak, or chomping on a lamb chop, you have plenty of options for restaurants in Mid Canterbury that can serve you excellent beef and lamb.

The recipients of the beef and lamb excellence awards have been named, and Mid Canterbury is well represented, with four restaurants receiving the award.

The Lake House, Braided Rivers, The Dubliner and Stronechrubie have all been given the top gong, which is considered a big deal by The Lake House owner Vanetia Bingham.

“They don’t just give them out, they are very special,” she said. “They have three judgings over a three-month period to make sure the meals are consistent.”

Serving two types of steak and one lamb dish on their evening menu, Bingham said they are not just catering for local tastes, but international as well.

“People do like to have meat and they are some of our most popular dishes, but we also get a lot of tourists coming out here and it really gives us a chance to show off a Canterbury product,” she said.

Head chef Cindy Leonard is the mastermind behind the menu, and Bingham said picking up the award was a big plus for her as she has only been the head chef since the middle of year. Around the country 173 restaurants received the award, which is now in its 23rd year.

From P1 The middle school issue aside, Gray said there were some interesting proposals among the recommendations around the roles of boards of trustees and the creation of education hubs.

The hub idea would see schools working more collaboratively to benefit all students in that hub. It could also mean that a principal would only be able to remain with one school for five years, with a possible two-year extension.

“And seven years is not a bad length of time, if you’re making changes in a school it takes time,” Gray said.

“There’s a lot of good points in this, it’s given us plenty to think about. No one wants to carry on with the same old, same old. We’re in education to make things better for the kids.”

Also tipped in the review is limiting the number of out-of-zone enrolments a school may take, limiting donations schools can ask for, a learning support co-ordinator for every school, greater diversity among teachers and ditching the decile system.

The goal is to create a more community based school system. Change is anticipated to take three to five years to put in place and the document is open for consultation until April 7.



 









Museum. The day started with a presentation of vests to the children, donated by Mitre 10.

in a trailer towed by an ATV bike, and were able to watch paragliders who were in the air at the time, followed by a tour of the museum

Stampede leaves 6 dead Teenagers panicked before a rap concert at a jammed Italian disco, setting off a stampede that killed five of them and a mother who had brought her daughter to the event, authorities and survivors said. Fifty-three people were injured, including 13 seriously.

Several survivors said panic spread through the late-night crowd after someone unleashed an irritant spray. Investigators said they were checking those reports.

Video on state TV RaiNews24 showed scores of teenagers rushing out a door and surging toward a low wall near an exit at the Blue Lantern disco in the central Italian town of Corinaldo, near Ancona on the Adriatic coast. The barrier then gives way and a cascade of teenagers tumble over it, falling on top of each other.

The bodies of the trampled victims were all found near a low wall, Ancona Firefighters Cmdr. Dino Poggiali told Sky TG24 News. State radio said most of the dead had their skulls crushed in the melee.

While prosecutors investigate “the government must ask itself what to so that such tragedies must never happen again,” Conte said.

The woman who was killed, Eleanora Girolimini, had four children and had accompanied her 11-year-old daughter to the concert, her husband, Paolo, told reporters. The girl was treated for a knee injury. - AP

Dog guarded home A dog that survived the catastrophic wildfire in Northern California apparently guarded his home for nearly a month until his owner returned. Madison was there waiting when Andrea Gaylord, who fled on November 8, was allowed back onto her burned property in Paradise last week. An animal rescuer who responded to Gaylord’s request to check on Madison first spotted the dog days after fire broke out. Shayla Sullivan said the outdoor guard dog was apprehensive and kept his distance. Sullivan left food and water for him regularly until Gaylord got back on Wednesday.

Wreckage found in Tasmania Rioting engulfs Paris

The pilot of a twin-engine plane that went missing in remote southwest Tasmania is believed dead after the wreckage of the aircraft was spotted in rugged terrain.

The wreckage was spotted from a rescue helicopter at West Portal, near the Western Arthur Ranges, shortly after 7pm on Saturday, Tasmania Police said.

Search and rescue police on board the Westpac Rescue helicopter determined there was no chance the solo pilot could have survived the crash.

It was considered too dangerous to winch them down to the site, and an investigation team was to be airlifted there yesterday.

Inspector Dave Wiss said the terrain was steep and dangerous.

“Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time,” he said in a statement.

“We remain in contact and we will continue to provide them with the information we currently know to assist them in coming to terms with this terrible accident.”

The Airlines of Tasmania aircraft went missing near the Arthur Ranges around 8.30am on Saturday.

It was on a routine flight to pick up passengers from Melaleuca.

Earlier, Airlines of Tasmania managing director Shannon Wells had said there were grave concerns for the pilot, who had been with the company for three years and was “very experienced and well qualified”.

The rumble of armoured police trucks and the hiss of tear gas filled central Paris as French riot police fought to contain thousands of yellow-vested protesters venting their anger against the government in a movement that has grown more violent by the week.

A ring of steel surrounded the president’s Elysee Palace yesterday – a key destination for the protesters – as police stationed trucks and reinforced metal barriers throughout the neighbourhood.

Stores along the elegant Champs-Elysees Avenue and the posh Avenue Montaigne boarded up their windows at the height of the holiday shopping season.

Protesters ripped off the plywood protecting the windows and threw flares and other projectiles. French riot police repeatedly repelled them with tear gas and water cannon.

The yellow vest crowd was overwhelmingly male, a mix of those bringing their financial grievances to Paris – the centre of France’s government, economy and culture – along with groups of experienced vandals who tore steadily through some of the city’s wealthiest neighbourhoods, smashing and burning.

Police and protesters also clashed in other French cities, notably Marseille, Toulouse and Bordeaux, and in neighbouring Belgium. The French government’s plan was to prevent a repeat of the December 2 rioting that damaged the Arc de Triomphe, devastated central Paris and tarnished the country’s global image. It did not succeed and tear gas choked the Champs- Elysees Avenue by early evening.

Guitarist settles suit Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and his former Fleetwood Mac bandmates have settled a lawsuit he filed after he was axed from a tour. In April the band surprised the music world by announcing that Buckingham had been fired and was being replaced by New Zealand’s musical superstar, Neil Finn. Buckingham, a key member of the British-American band, did not disclose the terms of the settlement agreement, but he expressed little hope of rejoining Fleetwood Mac. “I’m pretty much figuring that I won’t,” Buckingham told CBS News at the weekend.

Saville has added an impressive string to her bow producing the critically-acclaimed documentary 40 Years in the Making: The Magic Music Movie. The documentary is the dream project of Lee Aronsohn, the co-creator of Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory. He aimed to reunite hippie favourite the Magic Music band which he has been obsessed with since his college days. The movie has been tipped for the Academy Awards.

Music a ‘huge outlet’ for guest soloist

Mount Hutt College student Charlotte Blundell is making her debut as a Mid Canterbury Choir guest artist this week.

At the tender age of just 15, Charlotte is being billed as a superb young musician by choir members as they prepare for their Christmas concerts on Friday.

Charlotte said she received the call to be a guest artist following being this year’s Mid Canterbury Choir $100 scholarship recipient at her school prize giving.

She was more than happy to oblige, and said it was an easy decision to make considering music is a big part of her life.

“Music for me has been a huge outlet to leave every worry or problem behind, and just be involved in it,” Charlotte said.

She was considering studying science upon leaving school, perhaps majoring in psychology. So while music would not be a career choice, she believed she would always be involved in it to some degree.

“It’s going to be something that’s always there for me.”

Charlotte has left behind an impressive 2018 at Mount Hutt College. Lead alto within the Mount Hutt College senior choir, she became the main soloist for the choir as a whole. For NCEA Level 1 music, voice was her main instrument, and she has achieved both the solo and group performance standards at an excellence level.

Charlotte will join renowned Ashburton soloist Olivia Stewart as guest artist for the Christmas concerts.

Olivia has just completed her second year of classical performance studies at the New Zealand School of Music, Victoria University. She has had a busy year, performing at a range of events including Ashburton Relay for Life, part of a masterclass with

Invisible Jerry – a cool picture book Invisible Jerry by Adam Wallace and Giuseppe Poli. Hardback, published by EK Books.

Every now and again reporters get sent books to review, and so it was with this children’s book called Invisible Jerry.

It turns out that Invisible Jerry is a cool wee picture book, with the basic message of paying it forward.

It begins with the dilemma faced

by Jerry, who no-one ever notices, except Molly. Jerry realises everyone needs someone like that in their lives, and decides to help another who was once feeling just like him.

With just a few words and bright colourful illustrations, Invisible Jerry would be suitable for reading to young children and also for children to read themselves.

It makes for a nice reading experience, imparting a message of kindness.

Choir manager Carol Gunn said she was looking forward to seeing Olivia’s return on the back of such an incredible year. Olivia has been a member of the Mid Canterbury Choir, returning to sing with members as often as she can, both in the choir and as a soloist.

Gunn said she had already been reminded of just how fantastic a performer the young singer was.

“Olivia has just sung for me at the Light Up A Life remembrance service for the Cancer Society and was stunning,” Gunn said.

The Mid Canterbury Choir Christmas Concerts will stage at St Stephens Church, midday and 5pm, December 14. Members are musically directed by Kathy McKimmie and accompanied by Deborah Sloper.

A mother duck took her new family on a nice cross-country tour up around the Radius-Millstream area on Thursday – but it wasn’t without drama. Two of the tiny critters fell into the roadside drain, and would have been lost but for the quick thinking of a couple of Radius staff members who bravely rushed out with the tools necessary to rescue the ducklings from the deep, dark depths. Eventually the whole family was re-united and safely navigated their way across the road and home to Mill Creek.

QUICK RECIPE

Mix-and-match bruschetta 1/2 ciabatta loaf, cut into 1.5cm slices 1 garlic clove, peeled, halved 5T olive oil 250g mixed cherry tomatoes, quartered 1T balsamic vinegar Salt and pepper 200g button mushrooms, cut into wafer-thin slices 1T lemon juice 1T parsley, roughly chopped, plus extra whole leaves to serve 100g feta ■ Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan-forced). Line an oven tray with baking paper.

■ Rub one side of each slice of bread with the cut garlic clove.

Then brush both sides with oil and arrange on baking tray.

■ Bake for 6-8 minutes, turning halfway through, until golden and crisp. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

■ Arrange tomatoes on baking tray. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of oil and vinegar. Season to taste.

Bake for 10-15 minutes, until tender and leave to cool slightly.

■ To make the lemon mushroom topping, place mushrooms in a small bowl with remaining oil

and lemon juice. Season to taste.

Marinate for at least 10 minutes.

Toss parsley through.

■ Place bread on a serving platter and divide mixture between slices.

■ Top the tomato topping with crumbled feta and the mushroom topping with extra parsley.

Proposed change in education is good change T o most parents, ensuring their child has the best possible education is paramount.

And most judge the merits or otherwise of what’s going on at school by their own experience, by the system they understand.

But what worked in the past will not necessarily work today.

The world’s changing rapidly and the way and what our kids need to learn is very different to when their parents were at school and light years away from when their grandparents were in the classroom.

And that means change and change is unsettling.

The move in education today at secondary level is towards educating students for a future that is uncertain, one that is con-

stantly changing and one where they need the skills to be able to change and adapt as jobs are reshaped.

Today qualities that were just part of life, things such as resiliency and knowing how to work collaboratively are now being taught in some secondary schools. They’re considered as important as many of the education basics in ensuring every student will leave school able to cope with life in a changing working world.

Those, however, are changes at curriculum level. What’s also now in the mix is change at the highest level, school structure.

In 1989 what became the reform document for primary and secondary education in New Zealand, Tomorrow’s Schools, introduced sweeping change. Tomorrow’s School has been around for 30 years, but a recent review, with its findings released on Friday, makes it clear the school system is in for change, significant change.

At first take, there’s a lot that’s good in what’s proposed, not least the recommendation that intermediate schools become middle schools and expand their student body to include Years 9 and 10.

Intermediate school is a hiatus

between primary to secondary school that mixes kids from many schools in one melting pot. First year they’re unsettled, second year they settle in and then they’re flung into another melting pot at secondary school.

Talk to intermediate age children and you’ll find that regardless of chronological age, maturity wise they’ll range from anywhere from nine to 15. That’s a volatile mix to corral in one place.

How much better would the four-year, middle school concept be.

The three-year, senior school could much more easily become a place of focused learning for students. It would be better able to cater for a wider range of needs – academic and vocational – if the

age range was much narrower.

Students could be grouped and focused in a way that would allow them to better move in which ever direction they wanted in their post school years.

The way education is being delivered today is not exactly broken, but clearly there’s the need for a few fixes to ensure it better fits the future.

This review is a good one, its findings appear sound, now it’s up to the community and those in the sector to look at what’s proposed and how those proposals could work.

At the end of the day, providing the right kind of education is the most important thing we can do for tomorrow’s children to ensure they’re the best they can be in tomorrow’s world.

Employment law changes I

thought it might be helpful to write this column about some significant changes to employment law in New Zealand that have come into effect under the Employment Relations Amendment Law. It is important that employees and employers know how these changes will affect them.

I am extremely concerned about the impact this law will have on our businesses, many of which are family owned and run by hard working New Zealanders.

This law will empower unions and rob workplaces of the flexibility they need to compete in a modern, rapidly changing global market place.

Even though 83 per cent of workers in New Zealand aren’t members of a union, the union movement will be coming to a workplace near you, recruiting and fomenting dissent.

First some perspective. New Zealand’s unemployment rate is 3.9 per cent – well below the

OECD average of 5.2 per cent.

We have one of the highest rates of employment in the world and a lot of businesses struggle to find workers.

Under nine years of National Government, the average wage grew by $13,000 – twice the rate of inflation but under this Government the trend has reversed.

Union officials now have unrestricted access, without notice, to many workplaces. Once inside, they can dangle new statutory protections for union members that non-members won’t share.

Their recruitment drive will be on the employer’s time and dime.

The significance of taking industrial relations back to the 1970s may be lost on younger New Zealanders.

They may not remember that what used to be Wellington’s BNZ Centre was designed in the 1960s but not finished until the 1980s. It was infamous because the boilermakers union took control of the site. They may not recall the general strike of 1979.

New Zealand has come such a long way since then and we have much to be proud of as a modern, independent nation.

Under the National Government we made changes to the employment legislation to ensure that there was flexibility in the workplace to better reflect modern lifestyles.

Flexible working arrangements help employees find the right work-life balance for them and their employer.

Under the legislation this Law has replaced, some 245,000 jobs have been created in the past two years. That’s an extra 5 per

cent of Kiwis in work.

But the Labour-led Government has persisted with employment law changes that will hurt our economy, our businesses and our workers. It forces extra costs on business and allows pay rates to be settled elsewhere.

A good industrial relations framework and a flexible labour market are critical to a strong and growing economy that creates jobs and nurtures our communities.

A future National-led Government will repeal this attempt to take us back to 1970s-style adversarial union activity.

Down by the bay – Byron Bay

Crowning the rocky point, where countless visitors gather everyday for sunrise yoga is Cape Byron Bay Lighthouse.

he setting itself soothes the soul. Shapely fins bob in the sea and ocean spray shoots from blowholes between May and November.

We also loved Fresh Byron in Jonson Street, for delicious good-value fare. Take a stroll along Wategos Beach to Folk Café, where the courtyard is infused with wafting incense.

Vegan diners sway to the bongo drum beats of this hip café. How very Byron. It’s a great spot for noshing on nourishing organic and plant-based goodies.

Be sure to pay a visit to the Beach Hotel, a 25 year-old institution, lording over the golden sands of Main Beach. Byron’s most famous pub is open daily from 8am till late, whether it’s noshing or imbibing that takes your fancy. From daybreak coffee to dreamy late-night cocktails, this iconic destination has it all.

Byron Bay’s town centre is a sprawling, al fresco emporium of

all things eclectic, bohemian and woo-woo.

Crystals and gemstones twinkle in the sunlight, there’s more Buddha statues than you could shake a joss stick at, and North American Indian dreamcatchers dangle from shopfronts in the balmy breeze. Dreadlocks and tattoos, families with youngsters, hippies with fringes … it’s a melting pot of humanity in all its hues.

If you happen to be visiting on the first Sunday of the month, follow the happy hordes to the bountiful Byron Bay Markets, where a cornucopia of freshly produced and crafted goods are eagerly snapped up, from olives and honey to ceramics and clothing.

Lustily sporting its sustainability ethos, jump onboard the world’s first solar train, which runs a return shuttle service for the three kilometre journey between North Beach Station in Sunrise Beach and the town centre.

Operating just under a year, the Byron Bay Railroad Company has restored a derelict heritage train and repaired the railway line. Solar panels on the train and train storage shed generate the equivalent amount of energy required to operate the train daily, charging the on-board battery bank.

In brief Coll ousted in semis Paul Coll was ousted in the semifinals of the Black Ball Squash Open PSA tournament in Cairo yesterday. A day after beating world No 3 German Simon Rösner in the quarter-finals Coll was unable to repeat the dose against Egyptian world No 2 Ali Farag. Farag proved too strong throughout, claiming an 11-4, 11-4, 13-11 victory in 47 minutes. Despite the loss, Coll’s efforts in Cairo have pushed him towards another career-high world ranking, having already reached that mark in being No 7 on this month’s list.

Young swimmers hit the water Ashburton swim team member Bede Giera powers through the pool during a 100m mixed medley at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre on Saturday. Giera was one of more than 200 young swimmers taking part in the Geraldine Swimming Club’s ribbon carnival, which was held at the Ashburton aquatic centre as Geraldine did not have an indoor pool. More than 200 people took part in the carnival, with competitors coming from all over Canterbury, down to Timaru, Temuka and the Mackenzie Country. There were 17 members of the Ashburton swim team competing.

Salah took his Premier League goal tally to 10 this season as the Reds went one point ahead of City, who were undone by goals from N’Golo Kante and David Luiz at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp says Liverpool are happy to be on top but are focused only on themselves.

“We are not really interested in other teams,” he said.

Third-placed Tottenham moved to within six points of top spot – and remained two points ahead of fourth-placed Chelsea – thanks to a 2-0 win at Leicester.

The win was Coldstream’s third from three games so far this season, and in the other match of the day the Tech Stags picked up their second win of the competition, beating Methven by six wickets at the Ashburton Domain.

Matt Winter’s 37 was Methven’s best score, while Bevan Ravenscroft picked up four wickets for Tech. William McKee, Jeremy

Punselie and Jason Morrison also picked up two wickets each.

Sam Hurley helped get the Stags’ reply off to a great start with a quick-fire 20, while Morrison added 27 and McKee 20.

The Stags reached the target in just 13 overs for the loss of just the three wickets.

Saturday’s games were round five of the competition, which began back on November 3, but they were only the third games to actually get played, with a long weekend and two rained out rounds in the middle giving players a long break.

Australia will set an Adelaide Oval record if they manage to win the first test against India, having been set an imposing target of 323 on day four. The tourists resumed their second innings at 3-151 yesterday then enjoyed a productive opening session, underlined by Cheteshwar Pujara’s and Ajinkya Rahane’s 87-run stand. Virat Kohli’s team were rolled for 307 after losing 7-73 either side of lunch, notably adding a mere 25 runs for their final five wickets. Nathan Lyon bowled well and grabbed 6-122 but India’s prospects of recording their first test win in Australia since 2008, and striking an almighty blow as they hunt a maiden test series win in Australia, remain strong. The highest successful run chase in a test at the venue is Australia’s 6-315, achieved in 1902 against England.

Tough times ahead for the Black Caps’ selectors By niall andErson The Black Caps have secured a famous away test series victory – and it could be the start of a string of test triumphs.

A superb 123-run victory over Pakistan in the third test gave the Black Caps a 2-1 series win – their first away test series victory against Pakistan since the summer of 69.

As Bryan Adams belted out, nothing can last forever, and the victory marked just the Black Caps’ 15th away test series win – the first in Asia since 1984, and just their second against a major nation since 1986.

In their first test series under coach Gary Stead, the Black Caps bounced back from a horror sec-

ond test defeat – and from a dire position midway in the third – to truly trounce Pakistan on the final day, bowling them out for 156 in the fourth innings.

It’s a significant accomplishment, given that Pakistan will be by far their toughest challenge in tests this season, but they can’t celebrate too much though – it’s a quick turnaround for the Black Caps, with the first of two tests against Sri Lanka starting on Saturday at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

Sri Lanka are coming off a 3-0 series defeat at home to England, losing by 211 runs, 57 runs and 42 runs.

Even without the retired Rangana Herath, Sri Lanka still have some handy spinners led by vet-

eran Dilruwan Perera, but in New Zealand’s seam-friendly conditions, their seam attack likely won’t be up to standard.

The same probably goes for Bangladesh, who the Black Caps will host for three tests in February and March.

Bangladesh absolutely dominated an admittedly poor West Indian team in two tests last month, and are probably set to be a tougher challenge than Sri Lanka.

Spinners took all 40 wickets in their test victories over the West Indies, and their promising array of spin options are unlikely to find as much purchase in New Zealand.

As such, it behooves the Black Caps to play on green wickets all summer, with their stellar seam

attack set to be far superior to opposing seamers.

However, that likely preference may result in limited involvement for the bowling stars of the third test victory over Pakistan.

Ajaz Patel (3-42) and Will Somerville (3-52) ripped through Pakistan in the fourth innings of the third test, with Patel following up his first test heroics with a fine display, while Somerville had a dream debut.

However, there will likely be only one spinning spot up for grabs for most of the summer, and the return of the former incumbents from injury – Mitchell Santner and Todd Astle – could make for some tough selections.

Can Somerville and Patel repeat their efforts in New Zealand, or

did they benefit from favourable conditions in the United Arab Emirates?

They should get a crack against Sri Lanka, with neither Santner or Astle likely to make their test return until Bangladesh arrive, but the handy batting and all-round talents of the injured duo will make them appealing to the selectors, while Ish Sodhi may have to serve as a short-format specialist for the home summer.

There should be no major changes in the batting lineup. The only batsman in the top six not to score a 50 in the test series was opener Jeet Raval, who despite some promising starts and a decent test average (33.86), has yet to prove that he is a stable longterm option.

Andrew Bogut was relieved his Sydney Kings held their collective composure to see off the hard-charging New Zealand Breakers 71-70 in Auckland yesterday.

Bogut unleashed his most imposing display in the NBL but said that was of secondary importance as the Kings ground out a second important win in the space of three days.

After a relatively subdued outing in the 77-72 arm-wrestle against leaders Perth, Bogut was a dominant figure yesterday, recording 23 points and 16 rebounds.

The NBA championship-winning centre had a double-double by halftime and then played his part as the visitors grimly defended a lead which had stretched out to 15 points after three quarters.

The third-placed Kings improved their record to 7-4 while the Breakers (4-8) are cemented in seventh after a fifth-straight loss – all against top-three teams.

A disastrous third quarter crippled the hosts. The six points they scored was the second-lowest quarter return in their history.

They turned that around with 29 points in the final stanza as they mounted a torrid comeback.

A three-pointer from captain Tom Abercrombie pulled them within a point inside the final minute.

Abercrombie put up a shot in the final play but it came just after the buzzer, and missed anyway.

Former King Jarrad Weeks top scored for the Breakers with 19 points off the bench.

Read’s rugby future ‘not in New Zealand’ Kieran Read is close to agreeing a seven-month contract to play with Racing 92 after next year’s World Cup, according to reports from France.

French newspaper L’Equipe has reported that English and Japanese clubs have been chasing the All Blacks captain and are prepared to outbid Racing 92 or any other French club.

However, Read appears keen to test himself in France after next year’s World Cup and it has been reported that a compromised short-term deal is close to being agreed.

Read told the Herald in November that he will bring down the curtain on his long and illustrious All Blacks career at the World Cup in Japan next year.

Read, who turned 33 last month, is almost certain he’ll be taking up an overseas contract. What he has not sorted out yet is where he will be going.

Read and his wife Bridget have three young children and they have always wanted to have an overseas experience together.

They want to have it before their children get too far into their schooling and 2020 is seen as the perfect time.

By that stage Read will be 34 and have completed his third World Cup – having been part of the victorious teams in 2011 and 2015.

He’ll have played close to 50 tests as captain, been World Player of the Year in 2013, won Super Rugby titles with the Crusaders and played in a British Lions series.

There will be no major goal left to chase and it’s not realistic to imagine he could push on through to 2023.

So the time will be right to follow in the footsteps of Daniel Carter, Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith who all retired from the All Blacks after the last World Cup at the same age Read will be next year and took up offshore contracts.

“Yeah I have,” he told the Herald about whether he has thought about what he will do after next year’s World Cup. “So for me I think it probably

won’t be in New Zealand. We have always thought as a family that we would like to go overseas and use that experience for the kids. That is probably the main option at the moment.”

The prospect of retiring from all rugby has ventured on to his radar but he says that’s not a preference.

If his body holds up – and he says he’s feeling strong and comparatively fresh – he would rather try to eke out one or two more seasons and it will most likely be somewhere in Europe.

“That [retirement] is an option as well,” says Read.

“There are plenty of options out there but I probably want to keep playing if I can. It is the experience for the kids that will be the main thing and it has to work for us as a family.

“I hope to have it wrapped up before the start of the season because then you can give 100 per cent because you know what you will be doing.”

Confirmation that Read is almost certainly going to be stepping down from his role as All Blacks captain

will inevitably intensify the career planning of Sam Whitelock when he returns to New Zealand after this tour.

Whitelock will be favoured to succeed Read as the long-term captain, having stood in for the skipper in five tests since November last year.

But Whitelock is also off contract after the 2019 World Cup and while he’s contemplating making a four-year recommitment to New Zealand through to the 2023 World Cup, he is discussing the prospect of a playing sabbatical in Japan as part of the negotiation.

That option may be hard for New Zealand Rugby to grant if Whitelock is the next All Blacks captain and instead agreement could be reached he take a non-playing break with a view to start the process of grooming his successor.

The All Blacks have successfully worked captaincy succession plans since 2004 when Richie McCaw skippered the team against Wales before taking over permanently from Tana Umaga in 2006.

Read first captained the All Blacks in 2012, doing so another eight times before he succeeded McCaw in 2016. an extended break for Whitelock would allow an opportunity for his likely successor to gain invaluable experience.

But Read and Whitelock were not the only All Blacks considering a move to an overseas club.

Last month Midi Olympique reported Ben Smith had signed a seven-month contract with Pau which would start after the World Cup. Pau were also interested in the services of All Blacks flanker Ardie Savea who had been linked with a move overseas for a while now.

The French paper also reported that big spenders Toulon were in talks with Hurricanes outside back Nehe Milner-Skudder and Crusaders centre Ryan Crotty.

Last month Beauden Barrett also spoke out for the first time about a potential move to Japan after next year’s World Cup while Brodie Retallick has also signalled a similar interest.

Another Gr. 1 for Opie Four-year-old mare Danzdanzdance made light-work of her rivals in Saturday’s Gr.1 Rydges Wellington Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) at Trentham and could be New Zealand Racing’s next weight-for-age star.

The Chris Gibbs and Michelle Bradley-trained mare was patiently ridden by Opie Bosson, who watched-on as many of his rivals jostled for prominent early positions, before unleashing a powerful winning burst centre-track to score by four-lengths from warhorse Authentic Paddy.

Danzdanzdance, who is raced by a group of owners headed by international supermodel turned breeder and syndicator Kylie Bax, showed the benefit of a freshen-up after a luckless third placing in the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) in early October.

“She was outstanding,” Chris Gibbs said.

“You’re always wondering if you’ve got them right and she was a bit above herself today, which scared me a little bit, but Opie rode her beautifully. There was a tonne of pace that just set it up beautifully for her.”

The daughter of Mastercraftsman is now likely to press on to the Gr.1 Cambridge Stud Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day before a campaign across the Tasman is considered.

“We will probably have to start planning something for Sydney as a fresh campaign,” Gibbs said.

“The way she goes fresh, we probably have to look at that but that is something that Kylie and ourselves will talk about.”

Danzdanzdance turned in a superb performance to take out the Captain Cook Stakes at Trenthan on Saturday.

The victory capped a stellar day for champion hoop Opie Bosson, who earlier partnered Aotea Lad to win the Gr.2 Anuka Smoker Wakefield Challenge Stakes (1100m), and also scored in the last aboard Lincoln Raider.

“She is a very smart mare and it was some training effort too,” Bosson said.

“I was a little bit skeptical coming into it fresh-up over a mile with a bit of cut in the ground.

“It was a bit pushy (early), but I got in a three-wide position and wasn’t going to be pushed around.

“Turning for home I was just hoping I wasn’t going to get there too soon but she is a very classy mare.

“I didn’t realise the turn of foot she had.”

Bosson said the step-up to 2000m in the Zabeel Classic would be ideal and the mare

would improve considerably.

The gifted rider returned to action at the beginning of October after being sidelined through the early part of the season with weight issues and has been quick to assert his class.

“It’s good to be back riding and I am fit and healthy and there are plenty more winners to come,” he said.

For winning part-owner Kylie Bax, it was the perfect result for her syndication business in addition to a success her family could savour.

“I’m still shaking,” an excited Bax said.

“I cannot explain the excitement.

“We shouted-down the roof of the grandstand. It’s lucky to still be standing.

“It is wonderful to have such a great group of owners, including some people involved who have never had much to do with horses. Sharing the experience is incredible.

“She was bred by Mum and Dad and I bought her back at the Select Yearling Sale for $5000.”

Her parents Helen-Gaye and Graham Bax are part-owners of Blandford Lodge in Matamata with Wellington identity Lib Petagna.

The weekend could get even better for Bax’ reputation as a selector of bloodstock.

She purchased Beauty Generation for $60,000 at the same sale two years earlier and since his subsequent sale to Hong Kong he has gone on to be the world’s top-rated turf miler.

But Dunn is confident Care To Think is on course for his main mission in the $1 million Magic Millions Cup on January 12.

Big call for Rasmussen Spankem and Cruz Bromac’s brilliant final round Inter Dominion heat wins have left Natalie Rasmussen with a tough call to make on who to drive in next week’s A$500,000 final.

Both horses showed they have continued to thrive under the series’ gruelling format when winning untested at Cranbourne on Saturday night.

A decision on who Rasmussen will drive in next weekend’s final, and which horse’s reins will be handed over to Mark Purdon, is not expected until tomorrow.

The barrier draw for the Inter Dominion Pacing Final will be conducted today.

The bad news for Spankem’s rivals is he should be even better by the time he gets to next Saturday’s thrilling series conclusion.

Incredibly, the four-year-old has gained condition despite running three stunning races in the past seven days.

“We were getting him ready and seriously he has put on weight between runs,” Rasmussen said.

“He was pretty well, probably too well out there.”

Spankem cruised up the Cranbourne straight with Rasmussen barely asking the pacer for an effort.

It was a case of Spankem asking Rasmussen to be allowed to run earlier in the race.

The horse was feeling so well he simply wanted to run when he got outside the early leader, Maximan.

Once Rasmussen took the All Stars pacer to the lead she gave the rest of the field little hope of reeling him in.

Cruz Bromac went on to win the fastest heat on Saturday night’s pacing heats in a 1.56.5mile rate.

But the star former New Zealander trotted faultlessly to the line to reinforce his status as the Inter Dominon Trotting Final favourite.

Speeding Spur won his round three heat comfortably, the John and Josh Dickie-trained trotter leading all of the way to win untested.

Trainer Phil Williamson’s pair of Monty Python and Alderbeck both ran respectable fifth placings in their heats, the former qualifying for next weekend’s A$150,000 trotting final. - NZHN

Punters could be forgiven for believing Spirits Aubeer was under the influence when winning the group three Bonecrusher Stakes (1400m) at Ellerslie on Saturday, but there is no denying the talent of the wayward three-year-old.

The Nigel Tiley-trained son of Spirit Of Boom proved too good for his rivals despite laying-out markedly in the home straight and proving a difficult ride for winning jockey Rowena Smyth.

“He’s quite green,” Tiley said.

“He is still a pretty raw sort of horse, but he has just got so much ability.”

Feature on the cards Talented Matamata sprinter Princess Kereru has a Group One target in her sights after she registered her first open class victory when successful over 1200m at Ellerslie on Saturday.

The Pins five-year-old was returning to her favourite track off the back of an unlucky run for fifth in Listed company at Pukekohe where she narrowly missed a placing after being caught in the worst of the ground when finishing the race off strongly. After being tardily away from the barrier on the weekend, Princess Kereru charged home from near last on the home bend for rider Cameron Lammas to leave no excuses for her beaten rivals as she registered a comfortable twolength victory.

Lakers bounce back in style LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers weren’t about to let fatigue get the better of them on the second night of a back-to-back.

The Lakers recovered from a loss Friday night in San Antonio to dominate Memphis, defeating the Grizzlies 111-88 yesterday, led by 20 points each from James and Kyle Kuzma.

James added nine assists and eight rebounds, while Kuzma had nine rebounds, six assists and a couple of blocks.

“At the end of the day, we’re professionals.

“We come out, our job is to bring energy regardless of playing back-to-backs or 40 minutes or whatever,” said Kuzma, who was among four Lakers starters who played at least 36 minutes in the 133-120 loss to the Spurs.

“You forget about (the loss) and move on,” James said, adding, “You can’t let that harp on us, even though we played three great quarters (against San Antonio).

“You have to get ready, and that’s what we did.”

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Josh Hart added 16 points apiece, while JaVale McGee finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Wayne Selden led Memphis with 17 points. Mike Conley added 12 points while struggling from the field, shooting 4 of 12 on the night, as Memphis shot 41 per cent overall.

Memphis was coming off a win over the Pelicans in New Orleans on Friday.

“We just didn’t have it,” Memphis coach J.B. Bickerstaff said.

“Early on, we got a little demoralised because we got some open looks, especially in that first quarter. ... From that point forward, we just couldn’t dig out of that hole.”

By halftime, the Lakers led 6340 and were holding Memphis to 43 per cent shooting and 26 percent from beyond the arc.

Los Angeles’ dominance was particularly evident on the boards where it had a 36-11 advantage.

Why Parker has to produce a knockout performance We know, after Joseph Parker climbed off the canvas twice against Dillian Whyte, that the New Zealand heavyweight can handle adversity – a key attribute in boxing and in this division in particular.

Now, if he is to remain among the top echelon, we need to see if he can stop an opponent again.

He is still in the increasingly complicated mix.

The respected The Ring magazine recently ranked him as the

seventh best heavyweight in the world, with Tyson Fury the big mover to No.2 (behind WBA, WBO and IBF world champion Anthony Joshua and ahead of WBC champion Deontay Wilder).

Grace Austin returns a backhand during the Mid Canterbury Tennis Junior Age Group Championships on Saturday.

Mid Canterbury’s top young tennis talent battled it out for the title of the region’s best at the weekend.

The Mid Canterbury Tennis Junior Age Group Championships took centre stage at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on Friday night and Saturday, with the district’s open grade competition taking a break for the weekend to allow the young-

sters to have their day in the sun.

The big title up for grabs was in the oldest age group – the 16/18s – and it was top seed Tyler Leonard who took out the singles title over second seed Neil Alombro, while the two then paired up to win the 16/18s doubles title, beating Jim Barry and Sam Holland.

The number of entries in the boys’ draws far exceeded that of the girls, and with no 16/18s

girls, section this year, the 14s was where the big battle for supremacy was for the girls. There, it was top seed Victoria Talbot who took out the singles title. There was no 14s girls’ doubles.

For the 14s boys, second seed Oliver Bubb took out the final, downing top seed Ryan Watt, while the same two players combined to take out the doubles title.

In the 12s, top seed Jake Par-

sons proved too good, winning the boys’ singles title and teaming up with Gus Preston to claim the doubles title.

For the 12s girls, it was Holly-Jayne Feutz’s day, winning the singles as well as the doubles with Angel Spooner.

For the youngest players, Annalise King won the girls’ 8/9 singles title, and the girls then played in a mixed doubles competition which was won by Isaac Giera and Christine van Rooyen.

Down in the boys’ 8/9 section, second seed Ollie Jackways claimed the singles title as well as the doubles title, playing with partner Jamie King.
