Students of the future in the Ashburton District could be part of a three tier education system that involves primary, middle and secondary schools. And while it might cause a little angst and unease, a new review of the way schools are run is a golden opportunity for teachers to look to the best possible future in education, says Ashburton Intermediate principal Brent Gray. An independent taskforce has released wide-ranging recommendations for change and among those is a sug-

gestion that intermediate schools could be scrapped and a new middle school, catering for students from Years 7 to 10, could be created. And that’s an idea that has merit, Gray said. The middle school option had been talked about by staff at Ashburton Intermediate, Gray said, and there was a general feeling that there could be some merit in the idea. “The crucial thing they’re talking about is relationships and we build those now, but it could help to have students in one place for a bit longer,” he said. Middle schools would also put a question around primary schools that ran through to Year 8 and those that had re-capitated (regained Year 7 and 8 students) could be de-capitated again. The review is recommending the middle school option because the two years a student spent at intermediate school was seen as “unnecessarily disruptive of learning pathways”.
