■ EA NETWORKS PAYOUTS

$50,000 sitting unclaimed EA Networks has around $50,000 sitting in its bank account waiting to be claimed by shareholders.

The company pays a share of its profits to the people whose power is supplied through its lines and each year a small portion of that money never finds its intended recipients.

If the funds lie unclaimed for more than two years, the names of those shareholders are published, in the hope they will come forward.

EA Networks will advertise the list next week and is already making it publically available through its EA Networks Shareholders Facebook page.

Many of the shareholders have moved away from the Ashburton District, some may have died and others may have been multiple property owners who have disposed of

a business or house; they had all stopped paying a power account.

The largest amount owing in the refund list is $100 and the smallest $11.

“Our records show that for a period of at least the last two years, the shareholders have been non-transacting shareholders, have not resided at the last address known to the company, have not responded to any communications from the company, have no agent acting on their behalf and any cheques sent have not been presented,” the company says at the top of the list, which runs in alphabetical order for 14 pages.

Money that is unclaimed

by March 29 is forfeited by its owner and goes back into the shareholders’ account.

The first lost shareholder list was published in 2010.

Bus, van collide; one dead A person is dead after a bus and van collided on a busy road on Auckland’s North Shore.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Waipa Road, Birkenhead just before midday yesterday.

The driver of the van died at the scene.

No passengers were on the bus but the driver has minor injuries and was taken to North Shore Hospital.

The serious crash unit is investigating.

One neighbour who

doesn’t wish to be named said the locals heard a “loud bang”.

Birkenhead Transport managing director Robert Inwards said he understood the driver, who had been working for the company for about 10 years, was not badly hurt but was very upset.

“He’s doing alright, he’s got some cuts and bruises.

“We’ve already decided he’s not driving next week and we’ll give him some counselling if he wants it,” Inwards said.

Dobbyn here to headline concert Kiwi music icon Dave Dobbyn arrived in Ashburton yesterday ahead of tonight’s Mitre 10 Mega Christmas in the Park concert.

Dobbyn’s first stop was at the Ashburton Intermediate School, where he was welcomed and entertained by a range of cultural performances.

He also spent time at the New Life Church yesterday afternoon, practising with the three choirs he will perform with tonight.

It has been about 20 years since the man who has provided the musical backdrop to many Kiwi lives, worked his magic in Mid Canterbury.

He recalled playing on the back of a truck amidst traction engines and vintage machinery.

With a string of hits such as Be Mine Tonight, Outlook for Thursday, Slice of Heaven, Whaling and Welcome Home, Dobbyn is sure to get revelers on their feet.

Tonight’s lineup also includes home-grown artists Julia Bell, Layna Hunt, Luke Glendining, Chris Woods, Sarah Heney, Matt van den Yssel and the Danceworx Ashburton crew.

Christmas in the Park kicks off at 7pm in the Ashburton Domain and finishes with a mega fireworks display.

Children can expect Santa to make a guest appearance during the evening.

Grim forecast for weekend weather The forecast is looking grim for outdoor Christmas events across New Zealand this weekend.

MetService says an active front is poised to move on to both islands today, bringing rain to most of the country. It comes at a bad time for popular Christmas celebrations.

Top dairy performers named Mid Canterbury dairy farmers Mark and Devon Slee are among top performing dairy farmers the Government hopes will help other farmers boost performance.

Case studies of several top dairy farmers are being released

by Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy as part of a Farm Systems Change programme, which looks at ways to help farmers do better economically and environmentally by learn-

ing from the strongest performers. The Slees milk 2600 cows at Ealing on a three-shed farm originally converted by Mark’s parents in 1987.

It is described as a great example of a sustainable, modern, efficiently-run family business with an exceptional team culture and great staff retention.

Slee said the industry was full of challenges that would not be solved overnight, but with time,

education, resources and technology, farmers could do an even better job to gain a position of sustainability.

The Slees are continuously improving the property and their number one focus is to feed the cows well every single day.

The Government has allocated $800,000 to the project.

“A key focus in these case studies is how high performing farms keep their working expenses well

below $4 per kilogram of milksolids,” Guy said. “This includes the availability of feed, how efficiently it’s turned into milksolids, and how much is wasted.

“Animal health is another area of focus in the case studies. Well cared for cows are more productive and leads to fewer cows required to produce a given quantity of milksolids.

“Another common theme across the case studies is find-

The Slees’ farm was among the first set of case studies released at the 2016 DairyNZ Environment Leaders Forum this week.

A story and opinion piece in yesterday’s Guardian and on Guardianonline about the relocation of Ashburton’s rail shunting yard incorrectly stated that the viability of rail in the South Island is in question.

The articles also attributed a statement on repairs to the South Island’s rail network to a KiwiRail spokesperson and to KiwiRail’s Chief Executive.

Instead, the suggestion that the future of the South Island’s rail network could be under threat in the wake of the Kaikoura earthquakes was made

by Stephen Selwood who is chief executive of Infrastructure New Zealand.

Selwood suggested the damaged line may not be repaired and if this course of action was followed rail in the South Island could be under threat. The Guardian incorrectly attributed this statement to KiwiRail.

We apologise for this error and for any concern it may have caused our readers.

We have been advised by KiwiRail that engineers and specialists have spent the past three weeks inspecting the Main North Line in both directions with teams flown in from around the country.

Co-ordination centres have been set up in Wellington and Christchurch to assess data and work closely with other agencies.

KiwiRail continues to work with NZTA and MOT on how to progress future options for the line.

Next steps are the in-depth analysis of data gathered, assessment of future options and establishment of working groups.

Flying mission over and out

The Trev’s Barbecue flying mission to aid earthquake stricken Kaikoura residents, will make its final flight north this morning.

On board will be much needed food supplies including 1000kg of frozen vacuum packed meat and $40,000 worth of supplements and sleep remedy pills from the national Health 2000 chain.

The meat has been donated

by Allenton Meat Centre and its farmer clients. The sheep and cattle carcasses were cut and packaged by teams of butchers last weekend and frozen ready for their trip north.

The food packages and health supplies will be distributed by aid teams in Kaikoura to residents.

In addition the cargo will include 27 secret Santa presents

that will go to Kaikoura Catholic school children, donated by Year 6, 7 and 8 students from Ashburton’s St Joseph’s School.

The mercy flights were the brainchild of Ashburton pilot Terry Hewitt who called in several of his fellow pilots to help ferry relief packages into Kaikoura in the days immediately after the November 14 earthquake.

that ran for many weeks after the Christchurch 2011 quakes and it was reborn in a new guise to aid Kaikoura.

Initially flights were made twice daily into Kaikoura but these were tuned back to weekly as other helping agencies geared up.

Over the weeks the flights operated large quantities of food, groceries and toiletries were ferried into the Kaikoura area.

Seventeen years for murder

Camp rape claim

The man found guilty of the “cold-blooded, calculated execution” of stop-go worker George Taiaroa has been sentenced to life imprisonment, serving a minimum 17 years in prison.

Quinton Paul Winders, 46, was emotionless when the sentence was handed down

by Justice Kit Toogood in the High Court at Rotorua yesterday.

Both families were silent in the public gallery.

“The identity of the offender was the single issue of this trial. You denied and continue to deny you were the offender,” Justice Kit Toogood said.

“But the jury found you guilty and I agree.”

Justice Toogood said although the rifle that killed Taiaroa had never been found, he had “no doubt” it was the rifle registered in Winders’ name.

“It is clear George Taiaroa was a generous, caring, compassionate man who loved his wife and family.”

Toogood said Taiaroa was killed in a “cold-blooded, calculated execution”.

One 10-year-old boy has raped another at a school camp. The mother of a Hamilton primary school student believes the school and other authorities have tried to brush the incident under the carpet, Fairfax reports. The woman, who was not named to protect her son’s identity, said another child witnessed the incident. Police, Child Youth and Family, and the Ministry of Education have confirmed there was an incident of a serious sexual nature, Fairfax reported. Both boys have since left the school. - NZME

Quake effects in 3D New 3D fly-through footage of the Kaikoura coastline is being used to assess key areas of damage. The New Zealand Transport Agency posted the footage online, which uses 3D technology to show the main areas of damage along the Kaikoura Coast from Oaro, south of the town, to the Clarence on the north side. The seabed changes can also be seen in the video.

Remembrance tree to rise again Altrusa volunteers are set to put up the International Remembrance Tree in the Ashburton Arcade on Monday. Club members held a working bee this week to cut out the hundreds of stars which offer people a chance to remember loved ones at Christmas. The stars cost $2 and can be purchased between 10am and 4pm and all proceeds will go to Ashburton Palliative Care. The tree will remain in the Arcade until Christmas Eve.

Fire at Hutt Valley High A fire at a technology block at Hutt Valley High School has destroyed half of the building.

Fire crews were quick to respond to the incident at the Woburn Road school but the building was well ablaze when they arrived. A nearby resident said thick grey smoke was covering the area. A school spokeswoman said the school had been closed for the day.

Still small town girls at heart T

hey might be two of New Zealand’s most instantly recognisable celebrity chefs, but at heart Karena and Kasey Bird are still small town girls.

The pair, winners of MasterChef 2014, and stars of TV show Karena and Kasey’s Kitchen Diplomacy, stopped off in Ashburton this week on their nationwide book signing tour to talk with local foodies.

Since they signed on as Masterchef hopefuls life has been a non-stop whirlwind, they said.

Winning the competition was a surprise and life since then has continued to produce surprises and opportunities, Karena said.

Coming from a family that was committed to education, study, qualifications and a solid job, their parents were less than enthusiastic when Karena bailed from university and Kasey from her job as an auditor to take part in MasterChef.

Food had always been a hobby and their parents were happy for it to stay that way; Kasey and Karena had other ideas and today their parents are their greatest fans.

“Dad’s our number one fan now. He can’t really cook but he likes to critique. Our parents still say we’re a work in progress,” Kasey said.

They’re a close family with dad opting to be chauffeur on the South Island leg of the book signing tour while mum did the northern leg.

The win changed their lives as did the decision to self publish a cook book rather than take the deal that was part of the MasterChef prize package.

It came with a television deal that saw the sisters travel to 17 countries over the past 18 months to film their kitchen diplomacy programme.

“When we finished MasterChef we said our goal was to travel and we’re lucky, that’s what we’ve done – but we didn’t think we’d get paid for it,’ Karena said.

If there’s a downside to travel it’s that they’ve spent more time

“With food we’ve basically been finding ourselves, getting experience and really finding out who we are as cooks,” Karena said.

“The more we do, the more we

realise that we love the fine dining side.”

Before MasterChef they’d save their money and travel to Auckland to fine dining restaurants where they tasted, sampled and talked endlessly about how they could recreate that style of food.

Kasey is 28, Karena 26 and while they’re the best of friends, they don’t spend their out of the kitchen time together. Cooking, however, means they’re still together 80 per cent of the time.

They don’t fight, there is no boss. Both say what they think

and most of the time reach a happy outcome. And that ability to voice opinions and then get on with the job was part of their recipe for success in the competition, Kasey said.

And yes, MasterChef is as bitchy as sometimes appears on screen.

it, but for couples or friends, an argument in the kitchen can fracture not only the relationship but also their chances of success, she said.

“It shouldn’t be personal. You have to have an honest relationship in the kitchen. You need to trust each other.”

When it comes to eating out, they’re easy guests, Karena said.

“We just love food, all food – sausage sizzles and street food but I like the food to represent what it is – if I go to a pub I want pub food, bangers and mash that doesn’t pretend to be something else.”

Their travels have convinced them that New Zealand chefs have a unique quality in that they’re keen to experiment and add their own twist to classics.

“They like to learn lots of different skills and fuse those with New Zealand produce. They’re innovative and they put their own touch on things because our cuisine is so young we don’t have our own classics to mess with,” Kasey said.

Their new book Hungry, was born out of their television series and was supposed to be written while they were on tour. It wasn’t and that meant a frantic three months once they were home writing, testing, photographing and preparing the book for publication.

It’s now in bookshops and there’s the possibility of a second series in the wind. They’re keen to see that happen.

“But right now, we really want more time in the kitchen just cooking,” Karena said.

Further out, they’d love to start a restaurant, somewhere close to Maketu.

“But that won’t be until we’re ready to settle down.”

No matter where their culinary careers take them, Maketu will always be home. This year the longest they’ve spent in the small town of 900 is two weeks. When they go back they’re not celebrities, they’re just the Bird girls.

“And that’s great, that’s the way we want it to be,” Kasey said.

Plans for Plains laid out for council

Plans for the historic precinct in the Tinwald Domain were explained to Ashburton District councillors this week.

The Plains Museum is home to a number of groups run by volunteers, who have now been asked to contribute to the costs of running the precinct, Plains Museum Trust member Warren Maslin said.

Under the current regime the precinct’s original tenant, the Railway and Preservation Society, has footed the rent bill and other costs for the entire area, with other tenants paying for little more than their electricity.

The trust, supported by the Ashburton District Council, is now in the process of drafting licence to occupy agreements which will result in an established set of rules and a more equitable distribution of costs across the board, Maslin said.

“We want this area to be a destination for other groups who will need to know the rules – at the moment there are no rules,” he said.

“Some organisations pay some costs, some very little and others pay nothing.

“Without common rules some of these organisations will die

off – we need to think forward 20 years to encourage new people to come along.”

However, the trust’s expansion plans for the area could not proceed until current occupi-

ers signed the licence to occupy agreements and some parties were dragging their feet on the matter.

The expansion plans include upgrading the current facilities,

extending other areas and are part of a push to encourage more visitors to the precinct.

The council has agreed to fund an upgrade of the area’s power supply, likely to cost about

$60,000, but does not offer any other financial support.

Tenants do however receive a 50 per cent rates subsidy because they are based on reserves board land.

Maslin said the council may be asked to assist with funding some groups in the near future.

“We are not trying to make money but rather to disperse costs fairly, depending on the area each group uses.”

Councillors also visited some of the exhibits at the museum and rode the railcar to view the site of a 60-bed lodge due to be constructed in the camping ground area early in the New Year.

Young people who could become doctors of tomorrow were recently recognised for their hard work as members of St John.

The annual event celebrated the success and achievements of St John Youth Penguins (six to eight-year-olds) and Cadets (eight to 17-year-olds).

Two Penguins received the Super Penguin award, the highest achievement gained by completing all nine badges. Taylor Doyle and Isabel Wang were presented with their award by Graeme Mangin, Commander of the Order of St John.

Warning for Christmas shoppers

Members of the public were urged to protect Eftpos and credit cards at all times and to never share passwords or pin numbers with anyone – not even police or

bank staff.

Other tips included shielding the pin pad while entering digits at an ATM machine and to always ensure a secure connection when logging into banking websites.

Authorities are also encouraging people to be careful with money.

Detective Senior Sergeant Iain Chapman, of the Auckland police financial crime unit, said: “If you are being asked to send or handle money online by someone you have never met, there is a high likelihood you are being scammed.

Quake rattles Solomons Residents of the remote Solomon Islands rushed into the hills after a powerful 7.8 earthquake struck early on Friday, with some reports of small tsunami waves as aftershocks rattled the South Pacific nation.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage, although communication can be difficult across the archipelago of some 900 far-flung islands.

The quake triggered a tsunami warning for a wide swath of the South Pacific, although that alert was later cancelled by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

Life appeared to be back to normal for most people on the Solomons’ six main islands within hours of the quake, although residents in southern Makira province closest to the epicentre remained cautious.

The province on San Cristobal island is about 200 km east of the capital, Honiara.

The US Geological Survey originally recorded the quake with a magnitude of 8.0 but later downgraded it to 7.8. The quake struck at 4.38am local time at a depth of around 40km.

tially hazardous tsunami for the Solomon Islands, authorities in New Caledonia ordered people on the east coast and in the Loyalty islands to move to higher ground.

Martin Karani, a politician who represents Makira in the Solomons parliament, said the southern parts of the province were the hardest hit.

“Waves have come in to the villages and taken away the dugout canoes that were on the shore and also some hous-

es that were down near the beach,” he told Reuters.

Loti Yates, director of the National Disaster Management Office in the Solomons, said tsunami waves hit the southern region but there were no reports of casualties.

The Solomons, perched on the geologically active “Pacific Ring of Fire”, were hit by a devastating tsunami following an 8.1 magnitude quake in 2007.

That disaster killed at least 50 people.

Sydney man found guilty Boys more likely to get of supporting Islamic state science and math toys A Sydney man, who was allegedly in contact with a notorious Australian fighter in Syria, has been found guilty of trying to send thousands of dollars to support Islamic State.

Following police raids in 2014, Ali Al-Talebi denied two counts of attempting to give resources to a terrorist organisation and one of knowingly making funds available to a terrorist organisation.

But on Friday, a Sydney District Court jury found the 27-year-old guilty of all offences.

The Crown had alleged AlTalebi helped recruit a younger Muslim man to send $A6000 to Pakistan to be used for sending fighters to Syria.

It was also alleged he tried to have more than $9000 in US bank notes sent to a man in Turkey.

The transactions were attempt-

ed over three consecutive days in August 2014.

Al-Talebi’s co-accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, previously pleaded guilty to a charge relating to the $US9000.

The jury heard Al-Talebi had IS chants on his phone which talked of trampling unbelievers’ skulls and spreading hell.

The Crown alleged the money was handed to the young man, who has been indemnified for his help in prosecutions, in the presence of a group of men in the Parramatta mosque car park.

The mother of the man given the task of carrying out the transfers found the US cash in his pocket after the attempt at sending it through was aborted due to the high fees involved.

A sentence mention has been listed for Monday.

Boys are almost three times as likely as girls to receive science and maths toys this Christmas, according to the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

The IET found that 31 per cent of science, technology, engineering and maths toys were listed for boys, compared with 11 per cent listed for girls.

Using the search terms boys’ toys and girls’ toys, the study also found that 89 per cent of toys listed for girls were pink compared with one per cent for boys.

The IET warned that societal stereotypes driving the gendered gift lists could be turning young girls away from careers in technology and engineering.

It said that while the onus

was on parents to think outside the pink and blue boxes when shopping for their children, toy retailers and search engines also had a responsibility not to perpetuate gender stereotypes.

IET spokeswoman Mamta Singhal said the research showed girls have an interest in science, technology and engineering subjects at school, but greater work was needed to translate the interest into women entering the industry.

“The toy industry is changing slowly and over the years more gender neutral toys such as science kits have started appearing,” she said.

“Toys can really influence what a child does in later years.”

Greg Lake dies Emerson, Lake and Palmer were one of the most famous bandsof the 1970s and are still widely regarded as the founding fathers of progressive rock. Lake’s death was confirmed by his manager Stewart Young, who said the singer and bass player passed away after “a long and stubborn battle with cancer”. Writing on the Emerson, Lake and Palmer Facebook page, Young wrote: “Yesterday, December 7th, I lost my best friend to a long and stubborn battle with cancer.

Greg Lake will stay in my heart for ever, as he has always been.” Lake’s death comes almost exactly nine months after fellow bandmate Keith Emerson died at 71. Drummer Carl Palmer is now the only surviving member of the 70s group.

A childhood of hymns, prayers and decades of the rosary led to a lifetime of service as a Catholic brother and priest for Father Pat Kennedy of Methven. Today he is preparing for his final stage of retirement. Susan Sandys reports.

A lifetime of service Birdsong and prayer fill the airwaves at the Methven home of Father Pat Kennedy.

The 89-year-old recites mass each day at 11am in his home chapel, either on his own, or for members of the town’s Catholic parish who pop in to share in the celebration with him.

Father Kennedy had been serving in the Christchurch and Darfield areas for 19 years when he was called to Methven in 2007. He was seeking a parish which could benefit from a retired priest who was still able to serve part-time.

The Bishop of Christchurch suggested the small ski and farming town, and for the first five years it was a match made in heaven as Father Kennedy led services in Methven and other areas throughout the district such as Tinwald, Ashburton and Rakaia.

For the last five years he has been more or less fully retired, besides his home chapel services, continuing to enjoy being in the friendly and caring community of Methven.

But the time has come for a new stage of his life altogether, that of moving to Nazareth House, a Catholic retirement village in Christchurch.

“I am leaving because I feel I need full retirement and care at 89,” he said.

He was in general good health but inclined to fall over easily.

“It’s all in the passage of time,” he

said, following a mass in his chapel earlier this week, as a vocal canary sang from the adjoining kitchen.

He felt sadness at having to give away the tuneful little bird named Billy, as well as his faithful Sheltie dog named Laddie, but pleased he had been able to find good homes for them.

He wanted to thank the people of Methven for accepting him into their parish and community.

“I would like to thank them for being lovely people, and co-operative and so friendly, very friendly,” he said.

Father Kennedy grew up in Greymouth, and he and his four siblings would attend Sunday mass with their parents at St Patrick’s Catholic Church. It was a large parish, and there was always a good turnout.

Serving God was a daily affair in the Kennedy household, and each evening they would kneel after tea in the dining room to recite the rosary.

Father Kennedy enjoyed the spiritual rituals from an early age.

It was an inspiring influence, and there was never any question of being bored.

“You just took that for granted as part of growing up. Faith had a meaning in your lives.”

He and his two brothers followed religious callings, with he and Frank ultimately entering the priesthood.

Frank also served as a priest in

Methven, some years prior to Father Kennedy.

The young Pat initially followed a calling as a brother, and for his secondary schooling went to Tuakau Marist Training Centre in Auckland. He was a teaching brother at Catholic schools and volunteered for missionary service in Samoa, and taught there for nine years.

But following Frank being ordained as a priest, Pat was inspired to follow that path as well, and began a long journey to move from the brotherhood. It was not an easy task, as the Marist brothers did not wish to let one of their flock go.

“But I believed it to be God’s will,” Father Kennedy said.

His application for a dispensation from his brotherhood vows was finally granted, paving the way for priesthood. He undertook seminary study at Manly and Springwood in Sydney, focusing on philosophy and theology.

He was ordained as a priest in 1965, and has since found celestial life incredibly rewarding.

And all these years later as he leaves his long career behind, he is looking forward to being able to continue daily worship at Nazareth House, in the company of fellow residents such as retired nuns and four other priests whom he knows and counts as friends.

“It will be lovely to have priestly company in retirement there,” he said.

Definitely retirement this time

F

or years Trevor Whiting has said he’s about to retire; for years no-one’s believed him, but this time Trevor is serious.

He’s written the letter, handed it to his employer the Ashburton Trust, told his staff and booked his fishing spot. From December 18 the Tinwald Tavern will be running without the man who has made it his home for more than 25 years, and to be fair, Trevor says, even now most of his regulars don’t believe he’s serious.

All up Trevor reckons he’s done well over 30 years in the hospitality business, as owner of the Crown Hotel in Temuka, the Racecourse at Yaldhurst and as manager at the ‘Tav’. And he wouldn’t change one day of those years as mine host. He’d like to have had a bit more sleep, but lack of sleep’s a fair trade-off for the great friends he’s made along the way, he says.

But nothing’s forever.

“My body’s telling me it’s time, my kids have been on my back and at 66 I think I’ve done enough. This job’s definitely not nine to five or five days. Just about every time we want to do something, something happens at work.”

When Trevor told his patrons he was leaving, no-one believed him.

“People said, ‘you’ve been saying this for ages, but you’ll never leave’ and I kept telling the trust I was going but no-one believed me – until now. I won’t be coming back this time.”

When Trevor and Liz decided to give hotel ownership a try, buying Temuka’s Crown Hotel, it was love at first pull of a pint for the pair. They’d found their niche.

The Crown gave way to cafes and motels in Christchurch and then the Racecourse Motor Lodge, but Ashburton had always been home for the pair and when the tavern’s manager retired Trevor put his hand up.

“It was a great opportunity.

I came back to Ashburton and I’ve been at the tavern ever since – apart for a stint when I had a mild heart attack.”

That heart attack sidelined Trevor for a short time and he

moved into a part-time project management role with the trust.

It was a good job but it wasn’t the tavern and when he was offered the chance to pick the pub reins up again he jumped at it.

“I didn’t even think about it, didn’t even discuss it with Liz. I just turned up for work on Monday. I’d missed it too much and decided I’d be staying here until I retired.”

The tavern has been like a home, he said.

“I spend six days a week here, you’re always on call. Last week I came back from Twizel to work in the kitchen because they were

down a chef and there’s always someone ringing up saying they can’t come in for work.”

The key to being a good pub manager is being able to turn a hand to anything and everything, he said.

He admits he loves the Tav, has made some of his greatest mates among its patrons and looking back says he’s pretty pleased with the way the business has ticked along and the changes he’s been part of over the years.

Always a man with an eye for something quirky or different, Trevor has held cow milking, shearing, speed shears, tyre

changing, potato picking and a host of other competitions in the bar. They’re all good fun and they pull the crowds, he said.

During his tenure it’s reinvented itself several times and virtually been rebuilt from the ground up. A Liquorland bottle store has been added, along with 12 motel units.

“The pub’s become a bit of a legend I suppose. The things I’ll miss are the good staff and the good people.”

Retirement won’t see Trevor sitting at home with his feet up.

More time at the Twizel bach, more time fishing, more time

with his grandchildren and a bit more overseas travel are high on the agenda.

“I’ll be doing all the things I haven’t been able to do. I’ve given the trust back my cellphone so that won’t be ringing anymore.

The phone probably won’t ring now.”

He won’t be a stranger to the tavern, however. His mates drink there and he says he’ll be a regular, but this time on the punters’ side of the bar.

Retirement this time is the real deal, but come Monday week, Trevor admits life will feel a bit odd.

breast. Place 1/2 cup chicken stock in the dish. Roast the chicken for 1 hour and 50 minutes or until the juices run clear when pierced through the thickest part of the thigh. Baste occasionally and add extra chicken stock as necessary.

Stand for 5 minutes before carving.

■ Tapenade: Heat a dash of olive oil in a frying pan. Add the Tegel Manuka Smoked Chicken Rashers - Original 200g and cook until it is crisp and golden. Add the onion, red pepper, garlic and thyme and continue to cook over medium heat for a further 2 to 3 minutes. Add the black olives, chopped anchovy fillet (if used), parsley and capers and cook for a further 3 minutes. Season with black pepper.

Lions coach Warren Gatland has revealed one part of the game he feels his side will have the edge on the All Blacks next year ... goal kicking. “Probably the biggest thing we have over an All Black team is three or four guys who are better goal kickers than they are,” Gatland said. With Owen Farrell, Johnny Sexton and George Ford also competing for the No 10 jersey the head coach has a number of goal kickers. “If the series comes down to goal kicking, sometimes they are 100 per cent and sometimes they are about 50 per cent. NFL trials discouraged

Young ballers in the big time Six talented young local basketballers will head to Auckland tomorrow to trial for a New Zealand age group team.

Fletcher Arnold, Quinn Ritchie, Ashlee Strawbridge, Grace Adams and Sophie Adams impressed selectors at the BBNZ Regional Talent Camp enough to be invited to trial for a place in national teams in their respective age groups.

Sammy Arnold, out all season due to injury, has been declared fit and was also invited to trial.

This is no small achievement as three camps were held throughout New Zealand with up to 90 athletes taking part in each gender per age group.

Each age group has been trimmed down to between 30 and 45 triallists.

Fletcher Arnold is the first to head north tomorrow where he will join 29 other players trialling for a spot in the New Zealand Under 18 men’s team.

Strawbridge and Grace Adams are vying for spots in the Under

17 age group while Ritchie, Sammy Arnold and Sophie Adams fall into the Under 16s bracket.

The trials consist of four days of intense fitness testing, competitive scrimmages and scrutinising of not just skill but attitudes on and off court towards coaches and other players.

The New Zealand Under 18s will play at the 2017 FIBA Oceania Championships aiming to qualify for the FIBA World Championships.

It’s a similar scenario for the

Under 17 team aiming to qualify for the FIBA World Championships but they qualify through the 2017 FIBA Asia champs.

The Under 16 age group has the largest number of triallists as they have the opportunity to be selected for one of two teams, the New Zealand Under 16 team that will be playing at the 2017 Australian State Championships or the New Zealand Under 16 A team that will play at the Medibank Classic tournament in Australia.

NRL players trialling for NFL franchises might quickly become a thing of the past. Club bosses are keen to put a clause in the standard NRL player contract that prevents such actions and NRL CEO Todd Greenberg has backed them after the CEOs conference this week.

“The clubs have made it clear they don’t want their players going to another code, including NFL, and risking serious injury,” Greenberg said. “They are contracted to play with the NRL and we do not believe they should try their hand at another code and expect to come back to rugby league if it doesn’t work out.”

Every game a final for Tech

Round six of the Pritchard Shield senior cricket competition will pit Tech against Allenton while Methven entertain Lauriston and Coldstream have the bye.

Allenton will be determined to return to winning form after their unbeaten record was dashed by Methven in last Saturday’s action.

The T20 winners had previously put defending champions Tech to the sword in week one before seeing off Lauriston, but fell short in round five.

Methven batted first last week and were all out in the 28th over for 114.

In reply, a faltering Allenton line up could only muster a paltry 90 all out in the 29th over.

Meanwhile Tech’s aspiration of defending the shield will rest heavily on winning their remaining round robin fixtures.

After being turned over by Allenton in week one in a 76-run loss, they got their season back

In the opposite fixture today, Methven will be intent on making it three wins in three successive outings, but will face a tough test against Lauriston.

The two teams last met in week one and Lauriston came away with a 15-run win to the frustration of the Methven faithful.

Methven will take some confidence from Lauriston’s recent form, though.

After seeing off Methven they fell to a one wicket loss to Coldstream on a poor day for all with the bat.

Things went from bad to worse in week four as Allenton dealt Lauriston a 128 run hiding.

Allenton were all out for 196 in the 39th over and Lauriston could only offer a meagre 68 all out.

Coldstream will return to action against Allenton next Saturday.

We need bigger bats Recently-retired cricketers calling for a reduction in bat sizes should cast their memories back a few years to their own playing days, according to Dean Jones. The Australian batting great says it’s hypocritical for the MCC world cricket committee to propose limits with some members having benefited from using big bats. The 11-person committee, which includes former star batsmen Ricky Ponting, Brendon McCullum and Sourav Ganguly, has recommended limiting the edge of the bat to 40mm and 67mm for the spine.

Parker on the cusp of boxing history

By Patrick Mckendry The phony war of the build-up to Joseph Parker’s heavyweight title fight against Andy Ruiz Jr is over, with the New Zealander insisting he is “going to pierce his face with my jab” when they meet at Auckland’s Vector Arena tonight.

The respect between the pair which has characterised the build-up remains, but now the fighting talk has started.

And it’s in keeping with what’s at stake – an opportunity of a lifetime to claim the vacant WBO title.

Parker weighed in at 111.9kg, the heaviest he has appeared before a fight.

That’s the combination of an increased weights routine under his new strength and conditioning coach and Parker said he was hitting harder than ever.

Mexican Ruiz Jr tipped the scales at 116kg, slightly heavier than his goal weight of 114kg.

He appears slightly flabby, which he admitted afterwards, but he has lost a significant amount of weight – about 16kg, in training for this fight.

The weigh-in, held in front of a big gathering at a downtown bar, belonged to crowd favourite Parker.

He flexed his muscles while on the scales and his height and size advantage looks significant.

Joseph Parker Asked how he would make that count from the first bell, he said: “I’m going to punish him from the outside, I’m going to pierce his face with my jab, that’s what I’m going to do from the outside.”

His 112kg was “muscle, pure muscle”, he said.

Ruiz Jr told the Herald of his weight: “I’m really happy with that. We thought we were going to be 114kg, but we’ve been eating right and I’ve been taking care of myself. I’m going to come out strong.”

Asked about how Parker’s power ranked alongside that of his previous 29 professional opponents, Ruiz Jr said: “Everyone who is 200-plus [pounds] has a lot of power.

“It’s a matter of when they hit you and where they hit you, that’s what counts.

Administrators are keen but convincing cricketers to cut short their Christmas Day celebrations might be more difficult. Big Bash League boss Anthony Everard is continuing the push for a December 25 match after last year revealing it was on the cards. Australian Cricketers’ Association boss Alistair Nicholson said past feedback from players showed a reluctance. He said players understood the importance of growing the game commercially, but “some traditions should be respected”.

Hayabusa hits the 300 mark

Thrillseekers from all over the country converged on a deadstraight length of tarseal road in Mid Canterbury recently to hit speeds of 300km/h.

The Ashburton Car Club’s annual Chertsey Singletree Road quarter mile event is now unique in New Zealand because of the huge risk drivers willingly expose themselves to.

This year the club invited motorcyclists to join the event, and they didn’t hesitate.

Among the riders was local Brendan Price, back in the racing saddle after a serious crash in last year’s Race To The Sky, and Christchurch’s Phil Garrett, who set a world sidecar land speed record on neighbouring Chertsey Kyle Road in 2005.

Garrett entered a fully restored Kawasaki Turbo Bonneville Special for its shakedown ride after a ground-up rebuild.

This bike has extensive history at the home of land speed racing, Bonneville Salt Flats, and Garrett and his Flying Kiwis team are returning there with the bike soon.

Price, who has quietly recovered since his crash, has regained his racing licence and is building his own bike for an attempt at the New Zealand land speed record.

The pair were among seven motorcyclists to line up alongside 24 drivers last weekend.

Price said the event was popular but some of the Ashburton Motorcycle Club’s invited guests from the North Island were unable to make it because of freight issues resulting from the Kaikoura earthquake.

That didn’t stop John Secombe, who rode his Suzuki Hayabusa all the way from Auckland and was rewarded with the fastest flying quarter mile time of the day at 300km/h (187mph).

The standing and flying quarter were run simultaneously on the same run using two sets of wireless timing gear recently purchased by the car club.

Price said the equipment worked faultlessly all day, despite motorcycles being difficult to capture due to their small profile.

“From a standing start there was only a one kilometre run up before entering the flying quarter so both cars and bikes were not able to reach their full potential.

“This is the maximum run up allowed for this type of event at this level without going to a much higher level of medical and official infrastructure.”

Price, on a Honda CBR 1000RR had the second best flying time for the motorcycle contingent at 277km/h, but turned the tables on Secombe in the standing start

with his 10.808 seconds faster than Secombe’s 10.825.

Third fastest was Ashburton’s Clint Collett with 267km/h on a Kawasaki ZXR 1200.

Garrett’s rebuilt Kawasaki was clocked at only 202km/h due to the running-in rev limiter in place.

Price said the car club and surrounding landowners deserved special thanks for allowing the event to proceed and the two clubs planned to combine again next year for the speed event.

Ashburton Car Club president Shayne Adams said drivers came from Invercargill and Nelson to take part and the event was held in near perfect conditions, in-

cluding a slight tail wind.

The club had to apply for road closure and meet other strict criteria because of the potential risks. There were no accidents during the day.

A big crowd was there to watch the speedsters with cars including a Porsche Cayman, Corvette and Chev Camaro as well as Toyotas, Nissans and Holdens.

Top speed for the day went to Steve Avery, from Nelson, in his Toyota Supra, who clocked 287km/h (178.5mph).

Past winner Chris Thompson, from Invercargill, was second in his Impala with 278km/h (172.9mph) and Hayden Hurley third in a Hold-

en GTS in 277km/h (172mph).

In the standing start quarter mile, Thompson had the best time on his first run with the Chev covering the distance in 11.559 seconds. Hurley was second in 12.125 and Nik Jennens in a Subaru Legacy third in 12.662.

Fastest local driver in the flying event was Wayne Muckle, in a Commodore, who clocked 258.9km/h (160.8mph) while Stephen Kyles, in a Nissan Skyline, was fastest local from the standing start in 12.819 seconds.

Adams said it was the third time the two clubs had combined for the event and it was hugely successful.

In brief

Young Kiwi a man on a mission I

f you’re a fan of the Aussie V8s and somehow you missed last Saturday’s action around the streets of Sydney, you really deserve a self-imposed uppercut.

For those non-believers, Kiwi driver Shane van Gisbergen was on the cusp of winning the Drivers’ Championship for the first time, a feat not achieved by a New Zealander since Jim Richards more than two decades ago.

That’s monumental company to be keeping.

Richards won Bathurst seven times, several in tandem with Peter Perfect, and while racing against the likes of John Goss, Tony Longhurst, Mark Skaife and Rod Coppins won four Australian Touring Car Championships, not bad to have on your CV. On Saturday, The Giz started with the championship within

his grasp; all he had to do was drive conservatively and finish fifth or above.

But somehow his plans went awry, he couldn’t seem to decide whether to go with his normal aggressive charging drive or pull back a little, and that got him into all sorts of bother right from the start.

He botched that, and then was the bad guy (by a few millimetres) in a collision with Mark Winterbottom, which earned him a drive-through penalty, and suddenly he was dead, stone motherless last.

That could have been the end of his championship aspirations right there, but his team told him to play the long game, there were plenty of laps left in the race, and he could possibly even still score a couple of vital

points, leaving the possibility of still winning the title in Sunday’s race.

Instead of all that rubbish, SVG’s natural instincts finally took over, and those instincts meant going hard and fast, then harder and faster.

Gradually he pulled his way through the field, and before most of his rivals had realised it he was hard-charging towards that magical top-five spot and championship glory.

We’re talking the drive of the

century here; in a competition where the top ten shootouts are decided by microseconds from first to last he carved through the entire pack and unbelievably was looking at a podium finish.

My lovely partner Kendra, who normally, when Formula One or anything similar sneaks onto the TV screen rolls her eyes and reaches for FaceBook, was on the edge of her seat, captivated by the masterclass of driving on display and the astonishing theatre of the race, as would anyone lucky enough to be watching the highly implausible storyline unfolding before them.

Shane van Gisbergen is most definitely a young Kiwi sportsman with the brightest of futures in front of him, his major sponsor’s product indeed appears to have given him wings.

Alonso in hot seat?

Mercedes are considering Fernando Alonso as a replacement for retiring world champion Nico Rosberg.

“You have to consider Fernando,” Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said. “He is a driver I respect a lot. He combines talent, speed and experience. But he is in a contract with McLaren at the moment and we just need to weigh all the other options up.” Mercedes face a race against time to bring in a new driver alongside Lewis Hamilton, with pre-season testing due to begin in February.

Long evening well worth the wait

By Jaime Pitt-macKay Monday night was one to remember for young harness racing junior driver John Morrison, as young drivers from around Canterbury gathered for their annual prizegiving.

John faced an agonising wait for his award with it being the second to last on the night’s agenda.

It was well worth the wait however with John claiming the top graduating cadet of the year gong.

Not only was this one of the largest awards of the evening it also came with a substantial prize, including a trip to Australia with a few weeks’ placement at a stable of his choice, all expenses paid.

Uncertainty often brings welcome opportunities I

nvestors do not like uncertainty, and yet uncertainty has been a key feature of 2016.

The financial markets did not expect either the Brexit vote in June or the Trump electoral victory and had priced in the opposite of both outcomes.

After the initial shock of Brexit, the markets re-adjusted and to date, we’ve experienced a similar outcome following the US election.

Historically, US “change elections” comparable to 2016 have been generally followed by equity market strength in the next 14 months.

This is where the sitting President’s party was defeated, arising from a generational transition (JFK in 1960, Obama in 2008)

With an expected return to earnings growth next year, valuations well below past bull market multiple peaks, and the low probability of a recession in the 12 months ahead, we consider that equities are well positioned to continue the rally in the days beyond the playing of Hail to the Chief at Donald Trump’s inaugu-

ration on January 20, 2017.

Over the next weeks and months, investors will try to figure out the likely future direction of US policy and therefore which countries, companies and sectors are likely to benefit most.

Air fares set to fall further Air fares are set to fall further next year and while airlines face strong competition and uncertainty over oil prices, the industry will remain profitable.

Figures released by the International Air Transport Association show average return fares paid by nearly four billion travellers will fall 3.3 per cent to $US351 ($NZ489). This is 63 per cent lower than 1995 in inflation adjusted terms.

New destinations are forecast to rise by 4 per cent next year. Airlines are enjoying unprecedented profitability.

No one was more surprised than Ryan Hodzelmans when he was named South Island apprentice of the year for painting and paperhanging and no one was more excited than his boss Craig Bishop.

His name and portfolio were put forward for the awards by one of his polytech tutors and the first he knew about the award was a phone call asking him to attend a ceremony.

He’s pretty pleased with his win and says he’s now looking ahead to the New Zealand finals in Auckland and is preparing a portfolio of work to submit.

Let’s visit compulsory retirement savings Sue Newman

ike it or loathe it, KiwiSaver is the best option we have when it comes to retirement saving.

While some companies – far fewer than in the past – may run a subsidised super scheme for their staff, the vast majority of people are on their own when it comes to putting cash away for the day they stop work.

Retirement is a reality check, a realisation that the lifestyle we’ve lived for years might have to end the day our regular pay packet stops.

If we don’t have a fair stash of cash in the bank to bridge the gap between government super and our perceived needs, life is likely to be a pretty grim affair for the 10, 20, 30 or whatever years we’re hoping to have post work.

At least with KiwiSaver in the wings we have a mechanism that is designed to encourage retirement saving.

Even if you put the minimum amount away, you’re doing something to make your retirement a little bit easier.

And it means your employer is bound to help you towards your savings goals.

KiwiSaver has come in for its fair share of criticism and now there are a new raft of recommendations for change.

Among them is lifting the upper personal contribution limit to 10 per cent. And why not?

Another change that makes a lot of sense ia allowing people over the age of 65 to join.

Again, why not, it’s just another savings mechanism.

The call for change that’s been left off the list has everything to do with the nature of Kiwisaver itself.

We all know that most of us are not saving enough for our retirement and while it might be too late for the over 50s to do too much about salting money away for non-working years, the message has to be hammered home to younger employees that they need to save a little today to spend tomorrow.

It’s human nature that the lure of cash and goods today is so much stronger than a day in the distance when there’s no more weekly wage. The only way beyond that is to make retirement contributing to KiwiSaver compulsory.

That’s not a big brother approach, it’s just commonsense.

So the PM fooled us all!

lissfully Unaware was the title of my most recent article in which I suggested Mr Key was in that happy state as next year’s election became more of a reality than a “sometime future” event.

But it turns out it wasn’t the PM who was “unaware”, it was me! (and a number of others much better known media icons who might have been relied on to read the tea leaves but were caught out by John Key’s entirely unexpected decision).

Thus our popular PM of the last eight years passes into the pantheon of past prime ministers with the soubriquet of “the most popular of all our political leaders” ringing about his ears.

He has remained faithful to his own commitment to “quit” while still very much ahead.

Now the focus is on the fallout. Are we about to witness the emergence of our own version of Donald Trump, the Emperorelect of the United States, as the man in question himself seems to be interpreting the position he has recently acquired.

Is there a Kiwi who will surface from the political depths with real charisma to make the so far “tired old candidates” look just that, when we are really yearning for someone of Trump’s brash appeal?

Where is our own blond, toupeed tycoon, poised to take up the challenge to overhaul New Zealand’s creaking political machinery, the man who will bluster his way to power but then go back on everything he has said or claimed?

Though there may be a yearning for such a superficial saviour, I very much doubt one exists in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Winston Peters is too old – though he stands to benefit substantially from the disappearance from the scene of JK – and he is really the only known local politician likely to get anywhere near the level of rabid rhetoric as that achieved by “the Trump” while insulting Hillary night after night.

Such an approach would be of doubtful value in this country, anyway. Gareth Morgan might be a very long shot, and the title of his recently-formed Party Op-

portunities could be said to fit the bill nicely at this surprising juncture in our political development.

Somehow, though, even with a wig, I don’t see him taking up

such a role. Bill English is clearly the “safe pair of hands”, especially now that Coleman “the coming man” and Collins, “The Crusher” have backed out as contenders for the top role. In about

10 months’ time it will be our turn to indicate whether we wish the “chosen one” to continue as Prime Minister or plump for Mr Little – assuming he is still the leader of the Labour Party at the time (by no means a certainty).

There would, though, remain maverick Winston, who must surely see the current upheaval as his last chance to make it to the very top.

Thus the count-down to Election 2017 has suddenly become much more interesting than it looked likely to be pre last Monday.

sure there are people “out there” who are still refusing to believe John Key is about to vacate his wool-covered seat in the Beehive on the National front bench, for ever.

Our retiring leader will be able to join his golfing chum, Barack Obama, in Hawaii, even if his decision to leave office was made for him by the Constitution of the United States rather than on the strength of personal whim.

The matter rests there, though there may be more surprises in store to emerge before next Monday’s National Party caucus meeting. What exciting times all of a sudden!

Rakaia Catchment Environmental Enhancement Fund Open for Applications The Rakaia Catchment Environmental Enhancement Society is now accepting applications for local projects that enhance the Rakaia River catchment area.

Broadly speaking, the objectives of the Society are to allocate funding for projects that are designed to enhance the cultural, ecological, and biological health of, and recreational opportunities within the Rakaia River catchment area.

The Rakaia Catchment Environmental Enhancement Society Committee has been formed to administer the environmental enhancement fund. The fund was established by Trustpower Limited in accordance with the requirements of the Rakaia Water Conservation Order which was varied to enable the Lake Coleridge Project irrigation water storage project). The Trustpower contribution is made up of a $50,000 kick start sum along with an ongoing $100,000 annual contribution towards the enhancement of the Rakaia River until 2031.

The Society’s Committee is made up of representatives from the Ashburton and Selwyn Waihora Zone Committees, Environment Canterbury, Te Taumutu Rūnanga, Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga, Te Rūnanga o Arowhenua, the Department of Conservation and Trustpower Ltd. The Committee will meet twice each year to consider the applications received during the previous six months and to make funding decisions. The two cut off dates for applications are the January 31 and July 31 each year.
