School aims for new scheme BY DAISY HUDSON
DAISY.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A Mid Canterbury school has signalled its interest in a controversial Government scheme that has divided educators around the country. Mount Hutt College looks
set to join the Investing in Educational Success (IES) programme, the Government’s flagship education policy that aims to raise student achievement. However, the move has been met with surprise by an Ash-
burton principal, who believes the initiative is unnecessary. The programme, which is set to cost the Government $359 million, will see schools grouped into “communities”, while high-performing teachers and principals will be paid
more to lift student achievement across those groups. Each of the groups would focus on a particular issue and a principal and several teachers from within the cluster would be paid more to lead the work. Minister of Education Hekia
Parata announced this week that 11 “communities” consisting of 90 schools would launch the programme, but the Ministry of Education declined to name the participating schools until later this week. continued P3
