Methven will be fighting tooth and nail to keep its i-Site open, says long time local Viv Barrett.

Last week Experience Mid Canterbury (EMC) told staff that the centres in Ashburton and Methven could be up for closure as it looked to use its Ashburton District Council grant in ways it believed would achieve a better result in promoting the district.

That decision was short-sighted and failed to recognise the critical role the Methven centre in particular, played in promoting tourism and tourist related activities, Barrett said.

He’s started a petition calling on EMC to back down on the closure and the number of signatures is growing rapidly, he said.

“People just can’t believe that in such a tourist town they’re looking at closing this down.”

The i-Site was part of a tourism hub in the Methven Heritage Centre, along with Methven Travel and local travel agent Karen Blackwell, Barrett said.

“Every day there are people coming and going and it’s not just in the winter with Mt Hutt, during the summer there are bikers, walkers and travellers coming through.

“They’re closing our sites down

while other places are opening them up.”

He’s hoping to meet with the EMC board to put the case for keeping Methven’s site in business.

“If they don’t accept our case then we’ll call a public meeting. This is not a good move, I’m dead against it and we’re not taking this lying down, it’s an integral part of Methven,” he said.

Attempts to close the i-Sites down was not a new move, Barrett said.

Arsonist sparks shock and fear in community

Parents and community members are shocked and on edge after an arson attack on Hampstead Kindergarten on Monday.

The kindergarten’s outdoor plastic and canvas area was set alight at approximately 9.50pm.

Neighbours to the Cambridge Street property spotted the flames and raced to put them out using the kindergarten’s fire hose and a fire extinguisher.

A “massive turnout” of emergency services also came to the scene including firefighters, police and ambulance staff.

Ashburton Kindergarten Association manager Barbara Kirk said they were very lucky it had been spotted quickly, “Otherwise it would have been gone pretty quickly”.

“It was that close,” she said.

It was the first time something of that nature had occurred at the kindergarten. Although staff were conscious of locking the gates and removing potential accelerants and flammable items at night, Kirk said they had no reason to suspect anyone would ever carry out arson.

“A kindergarten is part of the community. We thought people would respect the property – but that’s not the case any more.”

Detectives were sighted working around the area on Monday night and throughout Tuesday, door-knocking at nearby properties. Security have also been carrying out night checks at the

kindergarten. “We’re a bit worried they might come back, because they didn’t succeed the first time,” she said.

Head teacher Justine Hanrahan said the incident had impacted on the community significantly.

“We’ve had lots of parents that have been very upset, and rightfully.”

Debbie Jessep is one such parent, who said, “An incident like this just breaks your heart”.

“There’s a lot of us who are just so saddened and upset that someone would do this … to a kindy of all places, it’s disgusting.”

Other parents and Ashburton residents took to Facebook to describe the incident as “sick” “appalling” and “the lowest act”.

Police said in a statement they would like to hear from anyone who has information in relation to the incident, or anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the area.

They are also investigating another potential arson which occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Allenton.

A garage on a Saunders Road property caught alight around 2.20pm and is now being treated as suspicious.

Fire and Emergency Chief Fire Officer Alan Burgess said it appeared that stored materials had caught alight, creating substantial amounts of smoke.

Police are also looking for any information regarding suspicious activity around Saunders Road on Tuesday.

Predatory cats to be caught in act

Cats with a taste for native birdlife at the north Ashburton River mouth will be caught in the act this coming summer.

A live trap will be introduced for the first time, in order to protect critically endangered black billed gulls which nest there.

Environment Canterbury is targeting feral cats, and any captured domestic moggies will be returned to their owners.

Acting Ashburton zone manager Janine Holland said the regional council initiated a trapping programme in the area last summer, supported by some Hakatere Huts residents and the Mid Canterbury 4WD Club.

Several hundred hedgehogs, rats, stoats and other predators had been caught. The traps

would go out again this coming summer, with the addition of the cat trap, designed to capture felines unharmed.

“Feral cats have emerged as a growing threat for Ashburton’s endangered black billed gulls,” Holland said.

“The trap will be managed

by Hakatere Huts residents and any domestic cats will be impounded until their owners can be identified.”

Upper Hakatere Huts resident Sue Kittelty has eight cats – four Persians, two Burmese, one Siamese and one moggie which she found as a stray kitten under her house when she first arrived there. She kept them in at night and even when they were out they did not go down to the river.

“I think it’s a good idea for the birds, there’s a lot of birds out

there,” she said of the trapping initiative.

Kittelty said she would be surprised if any domestic cats ventured into the gull nesting area at all, but hoped the trap would be somewhere which was not susceptible to high water flow, so any domestic cats inadvertently caught did not drown.

A Hakatere Huts spokesperson for the trapping programme was away and not available until late September for comment.

Meanwhile, while Environment Canterbury is being helped by hutholders on the north side of the river, it is seeking a similar voluntary group or group of individuals to undertake trapping on the south side at Ashton Beach.

Methven cafe Arabica has followed last year’s success in the New Zealand Cafe of the Year competition with another award.

In 2016 they were a finalist in the best rural cafe category in the competition and this year they won the people’s choice regional award for the Christchurch region.

Katrina Wijesinghe, who owns the café with her husband Ranga, said the team at Arabica prided itself on its customer service “right down to knowing how many sugars people around town have in their coffee”.

All the food sold in the cafe was homemade, she said, while the staff were well-trained in the art of making a good coffee.

It all added up to a recipe for success.

The awards would not have been possible without help and support from many people, she said.

“We’d like to thank everyone, our team for all their hard work, support and dedication, but also our suppliers and the locals and tourists who come here.”

Wijesinghe was also proud of the reviews the cafe receives on TripAdvisor, having been awarded

certificates of excellence for two consecutive years.

She said there had not been a bad review in the past four years.

Arabica’s Liam Sheppard, Katrina Wijesinghe (owner), Ranga Wijesinghe (owner) and Brittney Harris are proud of the recognition they have received over the past few years.

“But I believe it’s part of a council’s job to provide information for people. It’s a bit like asking someone into your home for a cup of tea and then saying to them, you can make it yourself.”

Barrett believes Methven people will fight their centre’s closure because the service it provided benefited every business in town, not just the tourist businesses.

“What we have now is a travel hub. Methven needs the i-Site, the Heritage Centre needs the i-Site.”

The petition calling on the closure to be canned is currently available at the i-Site but Barrett intends to put petition forms in other businesses around the Methven village.

It’s staying in circulation for as long as needed to make sure the i-Site stays open, he said.

Irrigators face power price rise

Mid Canterbury farmers have parked up their irrigators after floods, but ironically are having to pay more for irrigator electricity line charges this season.

EA Networks chief executive Gordon Guthrie said electricity consumption had not been high in a mild winter last year, so the peak demand for the upper South Island had occurred during the summer irrigation season instead.

million extra transmission costs.

Transpower passed on increased transmission costs to its lines companies, and for EA Networks irrigation customers this had resulted in about 30 per cent increases to their line charges this season.

Individual farmers were paying up to $3000 extra for a typical sized pump over the financial year which began April 1.

The increased costs for irrigation customers is among topics touched on by EA Networks board

chairman Gary Leech in his chairman’s report for the co-operative’s upcoming annual general meeting (AGM). He said it was “unfortunate” irrigation customers were affected.

“We are constantly reviewing pricing and regulations as they affect our business, and lobby when appropriate in the interest of our customers,” Leech said.

EA Networks will hold its AGM on August 30, and among agenda items is to fix the remuneration of directors, with a proposal to in-

crease total fees from $292,500 to $299,000.

The co-operative posted an after-tax profit of $7 million for the year ending March 31, compared to $5.9 million last year, with the increase mostly due to a decrease in the cost of borrowing.

Leech said the electricity network had performed well throughout the year, and the district continued to grow with more than 180 new connections throughout the year.

EA Networks was investing in

digital technologies to improve and extend its service capabilities.

During the year the co-operative sold its commercial property in Ashburton and was now exploring an opportunity to divest from its 50 per cent share in Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation (BCI).

The joint venture had been beneficial to the establishment of irrigation infrastructure and supporting growth.

EA Networks was also investing in three electricity vehicle charging stations in the district.

Taking aged care service to the next level

Eight women who do some of the most rewarding, but equally most demanding work in the aged care sector were rewarded for their efforts yesterday when they received their National Certificate in Health and Wellbeing level three certificates.

The eight are staff members at Princes Court Dementia Care and achieving certification at level three had significant work outside their normal work hours under the guidance of educator Chris Lill.

Princes Court is part of the Greenvale Group and business manager Vicki Green said the staff members had worked diligently over the past six months to achieve their certification.

“We’ve always placed a strong emphasis and commitment on the training of our staff and I hope that they are each proud of their achievement.”

Green said that in providing staff with an opportunity to upskill it meant families could be confident their loved ones received the highest level of care. That staff were keen to take advantage of upskilling opportunities showed a huge commitment to their work, she said.

Ashburton’s district councillors will shortly be asked to take a long, hard look at whether they should put some of their number out of a job.

They’re about to undertake the six-yearly review of the number of elected representatives sitting around their meeting table and will also look at the way in which those members are elected.

Rakaia water restriction A submersible pump failure has forced the Ashburton District Council to put Rakaia water supply users on level five restrictions effective from early afternoon yesterday. This places a total ban on all non-essential water use, which includes hosing. Residents are being urged to use water sparingly. Contractors are working to repair the equipment, which may take up to 48 hours. For updates on the water restriction, check the Council’s website ashburtondc.govt.nz or Facebook page. How many councillors are too many councillors?

12 councillors elected across three wards and tomorrow they will start discussions on whether or not they have an appetite for change.

Once they come up with a proposal – for change or not – this will be made public and the community will have an opportunity to have a say.

As well as deciding on councillor numbers for the 2019 election, councillors and the community will decide whether or not to retain the current wards

or to elect councillors at large. It has used the ward system since the Ashburton Borough and County councils amalgamated in 1989.

Councillors will also get to decide whether to retain the first past the post voting system or make a change to single transferable voting, the system used by the Canterbury District Health Board.

While Ashburton has stuck with the 12 councillors and mayor model, many local authori-

ties with larger population bases have opted to reduce councillor numbers, some to as low as nine.

By cutting numbers, the pay rate for councillors would inevitably rise. This is set by the remuneration authority using a combination of population and workload to set the rate.

Current rates of pay are: Mayor, $104,451; deputy mayor, $35,901; committee chairs, $32,054, councillors, $25,644.

There are also travel mileage and time allowances paid.

Well-known for being fond of motorbikes but not so fond of cats, Gareth Morgan is coming to town.

The Opportunities Party (TOP) founder will address a meeting at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre 6pm on August 21. The talk will go for about half an hour, and there will be about 30 minutes of questions and answers. The party’s Rangitata candidate Olly Wilson will also be there. He said the meeting would enable Mid Cantabrians to hear how TOP’s policies were going to help make Aotearoa New Zealand a fair place to live.

Taxi driver kidnapped A Wellington taxi driver was shoved in the boot of his own vehicle during an early morning kidnapping yesterday. The male driver has serious injuries after the terrifying ordeal, Detective Sergeant Richard Gibson said.

The victim was parked in the Ngauranga area about 2.30am waiting for work when the attacker assaulted him and put him in the boot of the car. The victim was set free about two hours later in the suburb of Grenada Village, and notified police.

The service delivery group works to ensure the management of storm water, sewerage, transportation, waste management and other areas is adequate to meet the public’s needs. The council is due to produce their next long-term plan next year.

New Zealand’s total population is forecast to hit 5 million in 2023, and be 5,923,000 by 2043 – that’s an average increase of 40,000 a year. More than half of the country’s population growth over this time will be in Auckland.

The projections take into account slower population growth with time.

People living in Lake Hood’s Huntingdon Park can sleep a little easier at night knowing their neighbours are watching out for them.

That greater sense of security comes from the roll out of Neighbourhood Support in the settlement and no one is happier to have the paper work signed and sealed on the new cluster of support groups than Neighbourhood Support coordinator Christine Richards.

Across the settlement about 88 residents have signed on over the five groups that make up the Lake Hood cluster.

“I take my hat off to the Lake Hood Residents’ Association, they did all the spade work on this. They’ve done such a great job of promoting Neighbourhood Support and canvassing their neighbours,” she said.

While Lake Hood was one large settlement, the spread nature of the development meant it was more practical to have several support groups, Richards said.

In its current form Neighbourhood Support has been running for 10 years and across the district there are well over

300 groups. While most of those are active, there are pockets where a group contact has left the area but no one has been willing to step into the role, she said.

“There are some gaps where groups are inactive but we’re making small gains. I do a letterbox drop from time to time in areas that are flagging, but if no one puts their hand up, the group’s effectively in recess.”

Residents’ association chairman, Peter George said he was delighted to have the neighbourhood groups signed off.

“We’re really pleased to have it up and running, it’s a great idea and we’ve had just about 100 per cent take up,” he said.

After an approach from Richards, George said the idea was put to the committee.

“It was a no-brainer. They were all pretty enthusiastic, we put it out there, had some street meetings and away we went.”

While the park might be divided into a number of Neighbourhood Support groups, they were still one association that met regularly.

The group’s next meeting will be its annual meeting on September 6, at 7.30pm in the Lake House.

In 25 years’ time an additional 7200 people will call the Ashburton District home, bringing our total population to 41,900 residents.

That’s according to population projections released by Statistics New Zealand yesterday.

The estimates are based on the region’s current birth and death rates, demographic structure, net migration and other data from the 2013 Census.

Our fertility rate is currently 2.3, meaning that each year Ashburton District welcomes around 460 new babies. Net migration also brings 280 new people into the district a year, while the average number of deaths each year sits at about 260.

Based on these trends, Ashburton District’s population is set to surge by 20.47 per cent over the next 25 years.

Although our rate of increase is predicted to be slightly above the national average of 19.28 per cent, it is steady in comparison to that of the burgeoning Selwyn District.

It’s thought that Selwyn District’s population will more than double within 25 years – from 46,700 to 99,500 residents by 2043.

Down in the Timaru District, growth will be far slower, and the population will escalate by just 10.57 per cent in 25 years.

Ashburton District Council service delivery group manager Neil McCann says Ashburton District’s predicted growth is in line with council expectations, but will be taken into account in the council’s organisation of infrastructure and public utilities.

“We regularly include such data in our 10-year plan and long-term 30-year plan,”

Turei resigns; major slide in polls Metiria Turei has resigned as Green Party co-leader, saying scrutiny of her family over her past welfare history had become unbearable.

While she was at pains to say her decision to resign was not the result of learning bad poll results, a Newshub-Reid Research poll released last night showed the Greens had lost a third of its party vote.

It plummeted 4.7 points to 8.3 per cent. National was down .8 to 44.4 per cent, Labour was up 9 points to 33.1 per cent and New Zealand First was down 3.8 points to 9.2 per cent.

Turei has been under growing pressure after she admitted to historical offending while on the benefit 20 years ago.

She will retire from Parliament at the election, leaving the Green Party to go into a general election with a single leader for the first time in its history.

Turei will not be replaced until the party’s AGM next year and co-leader James Shaw will lead the party alone until then.

Speaking to media last evening, Turei said that if she continued as co leader it would undermine all the Green Party’s hard work over many years.

Baby kidnapped; women arrested, charged Two women have been charged with kidnapping and burglary after an 11-day-old baby girl was kidnapped from her Epsom home yesterday.

A heavy police presence was seen at the Pah Road house all day.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said police were told the baby had been kidnapped about 7am and launched an investigation.

The baby girl was found safe and well and returned to her parents about 1.30pm.

Beard said a 21-year-old and an 18-yearold were arrested in relation to the kidnapping. Both women would appear in the Auckland District Court today facing kidnapping and burglary charges.

He said a large team of police officers had been making inquiries all day.

“The baby’s parents are obviously very distraught and have been through a terrible ordeal and they are currently with their baby,” he said.

“This has been an extremely harrowing time for the new parents of a very young baby. We are relieved and thankful that the baby was not harmed and has been reunited with her parents.”

Police were still working to establish the circumstances around the kidnapping.

Beard said police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the kidnapping.

Police were unable to release further details because the matter was before the courts, he said.

Epsom MP David Seymour said the parents called him yesterday after their baby had been taken to make sure everything possible was being done to find their daughter.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “They were just distraught.

“It is difficult to imagine a more harrowing thing that could happen to parents,

especially of a newborn baby.”

Seymour said he believed the baby was taken from the family house but would not reveal details of how it had happened.

“Clearly they have been targeted by some one pretty sick,” he said.

Seymour said he had been working with them on another issue prior to the baby’s birth and the couple were excited about the arrival of their first child.

The parents had been back in touch to let him know their daughter was safe and had already joked it would make a great 21st story.

He said about 80 police officers were tasked with finding the baby yesterday and praised police for getting the girl back to her family so quickly.

Earlier, nearby resident Dane Bonnici said about six police cars and three or four unmarked ones were parked outside the house in Pah Road.

There was police tape across the driveway and around the fence, he said.

About five marked police cars and two unmarked ones were still at the house when Bonnici drove past again about 1.30pm.

He said police officers were standing on the footpath outside the property and appeared to be guarding the house.

Bonnici also saw police in blue boiler suits on the property yesterday afternoon.

It was usually a quiet area and to have so many police at one house was surprising, he said.

He said the area was “so safe”, despite the incident.

“It’s the loveliest place.”

Staff at the nearby Elizabeth Retirement Home said they had received calls from neighbours asking what was going but they had not heard anything either.

Miniaturised warhead North Korea has successfully produced a miniaturised nuclear warhead that can fit inside its missiles, crossing a key threshold on the path to becoming a full-fledged nuclear power, US intelligence officials have concluded in a confidential assessment.

The new analysis completed last month by the Defense Intelligence Agency comes on the heels of another intelligence assessment that sharply raises the official estimate for the total number of bombs in the communist country’s atomic arsenal.

The US calculated last month that up to 60 nuclear weapons are now controlled

by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Some independent experts believe the number of bombs is much smaller.

The findings are likely to deepen concerns about an evolving North Korean military threat that appears to be advancing far more rapidly than many experts had predicted.

US officials last month concluded that Pyongyang is also outpacing expectations in its effort to build an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of striking cities on the American mainland.

While more than a decade has passed since North Korea’s first nuclear detonation, many analysts believed it would be years before the country’s weapons scientists could design a compact warhead that could be delivered by missile to distant targets. But the new assessment, a summary document dated July 28, concludes that this critical milestone has already been reached.

“The IC [intelligence community] assesses North Korea has produced nuclear weapons for ballistic missile delivery, to include delivery by ICBM-class missiles,” the assessment states, in an excerpt read to The Washington Post.

Last year North Korea displayed a device they described as a mininaturised nuclear warhead.

The assessment’s broad conclusions were verified by two US officials familiar with the document.

It is not yet known whether the reclusive regime has successfully tested the smaller design, although North Korea officially last year claimed to have done so.

The DIA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment.

An assessment this week by the Japanese Ministry of Defense also concludes there is evidence to suggest that North Korea has achieved miniaturisation.

Kim Jong Un is becoming increasingly confident in the reliability of his nuclear arsenal, analysts have concluded, explaining perhaps the dictator’s willingness to engage in defiant behavior, including missile tests that have drawn criticism even from North Korea’s closest ally, China.

On Saturday, both China and Russia joined other members of the UN Security Council in approving punishing new economic sanctions, including a ban on exports that supply up to a third of North Korea’s an-

nual $3 billion earnings.

The nuclear progress further raises the stakes for Trump, who has vowed that North Korea will never be allowed to threaten the United States with nuclear weapons.

In an interview broadcast Saturday on MSNBC’s Hugh Hewitt Show, national security adviser H.R. McMaster said the prospect of a North Korea armed with nuclear-tipped ICBMs would be “intolerable, from the president’s perspective”.

“We have to provide all options . . . and that includes a military option,” he said.

But McMaster said the administration would do everything short of war to “pressure Kim Jong Un and those around him, such that they conclude it is in their interest to denuclearise”.

The options said to be under discussion ranged from new multilateral negotiations to reintroducing US battlefield nuclear weapons to the Korean Peninsula, officials familiar with internal discussions said.

Determining the precise makeup of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal has long been a difficult challenge because of the regime’s culture of extreme secrecy and insularity.

The country’s weapons scientists have conducted five nuclear tests since 2006, the latest being a 20- to 30-kiloton detonation that produced a blast estimated to be up to twice that of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945.

But producing a compact nuclear warhead that can fit inside a missile is a technically demanding feat, one that many believed was still beyond North Korea’s grasp.

Last year, state-run media in Pyongyang displayed a spherical device that government spokesmen described as a miniaturised nuclear warhead, but whether it was a real bomb remained unclear.

A strong earthquake shook a mountainous region in southwestern China near a famous national park, killing seven people, injuring 88 others and knocking out power and phone networks.

At least five of the dead were tourists.

The information office of the Sichuan province government released an updated number of casualties yesterday, but it didn’t have more details on the victims of the Tuesday evening quake, China’s official Xinhua News Agency said. The office said 21 people were seriously injured.

President Xi Jinping called for rapid efforts to respond to the quake and rescue the injured. Authorities sent medical teams, rescuers and other resources.

The magnitude-6.5 quake struck a region bordered by the provinces of Sichuan and Gansu at a depth of just 9 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey. Shallow earthquakes tend to cause more damage than deeper ones.

The China Earthquake Networks Center measured the earthquake at magnitude-7.0 and said it struck at a depth of 20 kilometres. The quake occurred around 9.20pm near Jiuzhaigou, or Jiuzhai Valley, a national park known for spectacular waterfalls and karst formations, the agency said.

The area is located on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau in northern Sichuan province, home to many Tibetan and other ethnic minority villages.

W

ater is shaping up as a significant election issue, with the major players staking out their ground, particularly when it comes to commercial water use.

Responses to Labour’s freshwater policy, which was released in Auckland yesterday, were on the whole predictable, but as the old saying goes, the devil will be in the detail, which was unfortunately lacking during Jacinda Ardern’s announcement.

In a nutshell, if it wins next month’s election Labour plans to charge people like farmers, horticulturalists and winemakers a royalty for irrigation water – but it has not said how much that would be.

Instead Ardern has promised to hold a roundtable discussion on water within 100 days of taking power, and will use information gathered during that consultation process to help set the fee.

Not surprisingly, farmers have reacted nervously to the proposal, while National has accused Labour of deliberately holding back detail prior to the election because they know their plans will be unpopular and will cost them at the ballot box.

You can see where the government is coming from.

Costs are always a critical part of any proposal. Understandably usually one of the first things people want to know about any policy is how much is it going to cost and who is going to pay.

That Labour has no idea on where it will go with this is hard to believe, given it has said how important freshwater is to the country’s future, while as National points out there has been plenty of time for it to flesh out those details.

It’s not as if Ardern has come up with this since stepping into the leadership.

The party’s water spokesman, David Parker, has said earlier that the plan was to make sure any levies would not increase the cost of farming.

The problem there is that any charge at all will increase that cost, unless there are benefits flowing the other way from somewhere else – and it’s hard to see where they would come from.

So either those costs are passed on to the consumer, pushing the price of food even higher, or farmers absorb them, which will ultimately mean they spend less in the communities they live.

Neither of those two options is likely to go down well in Mid Canterbury.

Crop protection has evolved over time L

ike all agricultural innovations, crop protection products have evolved tremendously since their inception.

From natural chemical elements, to plant and metal-based insecticides, to synthetic products, formulations have drastically changed for the better.

Today’s products are more sustainable, targeted, efficient and environmentally-friendly than their predecessors.

The first recorded use of an insecticide was about 4500 years ago by the Sumarians, who used sulphur compounds to control insects and mites attacking their food sources.

In the first century BC, Romans made a compound from crushed olives, burnt sulphur and salt to control ants and weeds in their crops.

In 800 AD, the Chinese used arsenic mixed with water to control insects in their field crops and citrus orchards.

Other pesticides, derived from natural sources such as pyrethrum from dried chrysanthemum flowers and nicotine extract from tobacco plants, evolved over time.

From 1750 to about 1880, farmers began using crop protec-

tion products more widely and international trade promoted the use of plant and metal-based insecticides.

Until the early 1900s, Europe and the US used compounds made with sulphur, iron, copper, arsenic and sodium to control weeds in cereal crops and fungus in grapes.

In the 1930s and 40s, effective and widely used fungicides were developed, along with the first synthetic insecticides.

By the 1960s and 70s, farmers began to utilise Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to control pests.

IPM is based on the idea that farmers can manage insect pests, using crop protection products only when needed.

This practice paved the way for the development of more targeted and environmentally-friendly products, such as pyrethrumbased formulations.

With improved research, the plant science industry began developing more efficient products that were effective at lower rates, such as 10 millilitres of active ingredient per hectare rather than the 180mls used previously.

Herbicides like glyphosate, which are still commonly used today, were developed in the 1970s and have continued to improve and become more efficient over time.

In the 1990s, scientists concentrated on finding active ingredients that better target pests.

Through biotechnology, plant scientists also improved the IPM concept – using naturally occurring materials such as insect hormone or venom, microbes or plant material extracts like Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) – to more accurately and selectively target pests.

Finally, weed treatments, such as neonicotinoids, were developed during this time to protect emerging seedlings from pests while not impacting beneficial species like pollinators.

The plant science industry invests heavily in research to develop new products, ensuring that they do not pose unacceptable risks to humans or the

environment.

In fact, it now takes about $US286 million and 11 years of research and development to bring a new crop protection product to market.

Deer yards focus of seminars

A series of seminars around Canterbury on upgrading deer yards will begin in Mayfield next week.

Organised by the Canterbury West Coast branch of the New Zealand Deer Farmers Association ahead of the 2017-18 velvet season, the seminars are in response to new hygiene requirements for deer sheds when velvet antler is being removed.

The need for the requirements was highlighted after a visit late last year by Chinese officials, who reviewed how velvet was harvested, handled and stored in New Zealand.

National Velvetting Standards Body chairman Ian Scott said the officials’ focus was on the safety of food and traditional medicines sold in China, particularly in relation to velvet.

“China’s requirements are not unreasonable and highlight the importance of reinforced hygiene measures and the maintenance of cold chain to support velvet as a high quality product for export or further domestic processing.”

He said the NVSB worked closely with the Ministry for Primary Industries officials to come up with a quality standard that strikes a balance between what MPI and Chinese regulators will

accept and what is practical on the farm.

Tony Pearse, Deer Industry New Zealand producer manager, said requirements for farmers were relatively simple.

Velvet antler can only be removed in a designated clean zone, he said.

All walls, doors, gates, benches and floors within clean zones need to have surfaces that allow easy wiping or washing.

In terms of walls, bare timber is no longer acceptable. Pearse said farmers would need to paint or polyurethane walls, or use some form of plastic covering.

It must be able to be hosed or

washed down at the end of each velvetting session.

Dirt floors are also out, he said. Concrete floors were ideal, but there are some rubber mats around that would also serve the purpose.

Whatever was used had to be capable of being washed clean with an approved disinfectant after each session, Pearse said, adding that it was important floors were non-porous.

Farmers now also needed a dedicated freezer for velvet that must be capable of freezing down to -15°C or colder.

There was some earlier trepidation about the new requirements,

Pearse said, but most farmers were now well on the way to making sure they were compliant.

The first Canterbury seminar is at Aubrey Aitken’s deer shed at 1980 Ealing-Montalto Road on August 15, beginning at 1.30pm, before going on to John Bartholomew’s place nearby.

The following day Russell Rudd will host deer farmers at his shed at 555 Mairaki Downs Road near Rangiora, again at 1.30pm, before going on to David Whiteman’s shed at 55 Summer Hill Road.

Then on August 23 it’s the turn of Grant Hasse at 1141 Bealy Road, Charing Cross, before finishing up at Evan Frew’s shed.

Synlait optimistic

Synlait Milk Limited and The A2 Milk Company Limited are confident with the progress of their application to export A2 Platinum infant formula to China from January 1 next year.

The China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA), which requires manufacturers of infant formula to register brands and recipes with them in order to import products from that date, announced late last week that 30 brands from 22 infant formula factories owned by 14 manufacturing companies have been approved.

In a statement to the New Zealand and Australia stock exchanges, Synlait and A2MC said they understood these initial approvals reflected some of the first dossier applications received by the CFDA from other manufacturers in early 2017.

“The dossier application for CFDA registration of A2 Platinum infant formula was submitted by Synlait in May 2017, and has been accepted for review,” it said.

Robert Stowell, Synlait general manager supply chain, said it was important to note that the approval was only part of the process and did not mean they had received the final go-ahead.

He was, however, optimistic and pleased with how things were progressing.

“It’s a big opportunity and we’re really pleased with how the partnership with A2 is going.”

Teamwork best for water quality A partnership approach to dealing with river and lake water quality offers the best prospect of making sustained progress on problems that were often decades in the making, Federated Farmers says.

The federation’s water spokesman, Chris Allen, hailed the announcement this week of an initial $44m in grants from the $100m Freshwater Improvement Fund, particularly as it will leverage a further $98 million of investment by councils, farmers, other land-owners and agencies.

In total, 33 projects covering more than 100 lakes and rivers have won funding, including at Lakes Tarawera, Horowhenua and Wanaka and involving the Manawatu, Wairoa, Waimea and Selwyn rivers.

Environment Minister Nick Smith said the money will fund the fencing of waterways from farm animals, planting along streams, development of wetlands, sewage reticulation and water storage to increase minimum flows. There are also initiatives in the package to eradicate water weeds, remove pest fish and to retire marginal land adjacent to waterways.

“It’s great to have acknowledgement

from the government that it’s expensive to restore water quality in these hot-spots to a level that meets the standards expected by government and all New Zealanders,” Allen said.

“It’s often more than individual communities or sector groups can do on their own. We’re going to get there by working together, and this announcement is certainly a good step in the right direction.

“As Federated Farmers noted in its 2017 election manifesto, sustainable results, both environmentally and economically, will only be achieved with all members of the community, including farmers, working together catchment by catchment.”

Funding deeds will now be negotiated with the successful applicants. Most of the projects are being overseen by councils, the Department of Conservation and environmental and iwi trusts but two multi-regional projects involve the Foundation for Arable Research (protecting our groundwater) and Beef + Lamb New Zealand (improving freshwater through enhanced outcomes on sheep and beef farms).

A Foundation for Arable Research project that looks at protecting groundwater through measuring and managing diffuse nutrient losses from cropping systems has been recognised by the Ministry for the Environment for funding from its Freshwater Improvement Fund.

The project is one of two newly announced projects with a national focus.

Diana Mathers, FAR’s environmental research manager, said the project has a strong focus on farmer engagement and will deliver long-term, robust information about nutrient losses from cropping systems from a network of fluxmeters in five regions.

“This information will provide farmers and scientists with evidence to drive onfarm management changes and to improve farm system models used for predicting losses.

“The value of this information will increase over time as more data is collected.”

The project partners include FAR, HortNZ, Ravensdown, five regional councils and Plant & Food Research.

The total value of the programme is $1,040,168, with MfE contributing $485,168 and the balance coming from the industry and regional council partners.

The programme of work has five objectives, Mathers said.

The first objective is to collect a scientifically robust set of data measuring diffuse nutrient losses from the cropping rotations in the fluxmeter network, established in 2014, while the second focuses on promoting industry-agreed good management practices to cropping farmers and the wider industry through community engagement.

The final three objectives involve soil quality monitoring, informing and improving the functionality of OVERSEER for cropping systems, and engagement with Maori farmers and iwi in the vulnerable catchments.

Passwords: ‘I got it wrong’ It has become the bane of many office workers’ existences: being forced to use complicated and difficult-to-remember passwords laden with random numbers and symbols.

But the man who originally came up with the rules on safe passwords has admitted that his guidance was totally wrong, 14 years after it was first published.

Bill Burr wrote what has become the “bible” on password security in 2003 while working for the US Government. It advised using capital letters, numbers and non-alphabetic symbols in passwords, in the belief that they would be more difficult.

His work is now responsible for offices and websites forcing people to adopt tortuous phrases such as “P@55w0rd” or “Football123” to satisfy password forms, as well as IT departments demanding that workers create a new one every 90 days.

But instead of improving security, the combinations actually made computer systems less secure, since users would end

up using the same password repeatedly, or writing them down on post-it notes attached to their screens.

Nor did the introduction of numbers and symbols make passwords any less vulnerable to “brute force” cyber attacks in

which a computer cycles through every possible combination of characters to guess a password.

“Much of what I did I now regret,” Burr, who is now retired, told the Wall Street Journal. “In the end, it was probably too complicated for a lot of folks to un-

derstand very well, and the truth is, it was barking up the wrong tree.”

He added that the advice to regularly change passwords was mistaken, since most people end up altering one character, such as changing from “username1” to username2”, which does little to stop hackers.

In 2015, GCHQ advised companies to stop resetting passwords, saying the inconvenience it created outweighed any limited security benefits.

The original password guidelines from America’s National Institute for Science and Technology written by Burr have recently been updated to change the old rules.

They now advise that people use long but easy-to-remember “passphrases”, a sequence of words that do not need to feature special characters or numbers.

Using “horsecarrotsaddlestable” would take one trillion years for a “botnet” cyber attack to crack, compared to one minute for “P@55w0rd”.

Record ASB profits ASB says it will focus on boosting capability in its wealth business after reporting another year of record profits.

The bank, which is owned by Commonwealth Bank of Australia, yesterday reported a statutory net profit of $1.069b – an increase of 17 per cent and a 13 per cent increase in its cash net profit to $1.033b for the year to June 30.

It was the seventh consecutive year of record profits for ASB. Chief executive Barbara Chapman said the strong annual result was down to sustained lending and deposit growth despite global economic uncertainty and volatile off-shore funding costs.

“Over the past year, we have remained focused on delivering sustainable, diversified balance sheet growth across our key customer portfolios.

“All our business units performed well and we continue to experience sustained momentum, despite some external headwinds and a rapidly evolving financial services market.”

The bank’s advances to customers grew 8 per cent to $78b and home loans were up 7 per cent.

Business, commercial and rural lending were up 11 per cent.

Loan impairment expenses fell 47 per cent from $130 million to $69m.

Chapman said this was primarily because of the continued recovery of the dairy sector.

“We have been supporting our rural customers through a challenging period and as we enter the next phase of the cycle, this has reduced the amount of provision required to set aside for bad and doubtful debts.”

Pirate ride jettisoned After 34 years of thrilling Aucklanders, the Rainbow’s End Pirate Ship is being retired for a new attraction. The theme park, owned by NZX-listed Rangitira Investments, says the ride will “swing its last swing” this month.

Sovereign up for sale Sovereign – New Zealand’s largest life insurance business – could be sold. Sovereign owner Commonwealth Bank of Australia revealed as part of its results announcement yesterday that it was in talks with third parties in relation to potential interest in its life insurance businesses.

“We are in discussions with third parties in relation to their potential interest in our life insurance businesses in Australia and New Zealand. The outcome of those discussions is uncertain,” CBA said in a statement. Sovereign made a cash net profit of $102 million in the year to June 30 - down from $105m in the prior year.

Its insurance income rose from $230m to $252m and its operating expenses fell.

Buying a property that shares common areas with others is becoming increasingly prevalent in New Zealand. These properties can be apartments, townhouses, units, retirement properties or any other dwellings that share common private access and utilities. When you buy into a property like these ones you have different rights and responsibilities to someone who is buying a stand-alone property on its own separate parcel of land.

This kind of property ownership – in a building development where there are multiple owners – is known as a unit title. It allows individual ownership of parts of a single building, or of separate buildings within one complex.

Each unit title is made up of three parts: ownership of your particular apartment or unit and any ‘accessory’ units, like garages, private courtyards and storage areas; an undivided share of the ownership of the common property (lifts, laundries, lobby areas, gardens) and an undivided share of the ownership of the units if the unit plan is cancelled.

“When you’re considering buying into a complex where there are multiple owners, there are some important additions to the usual due diligence to-do list,” says Real Estate Agents Authority chief executive Kevin LampenSmith.

“A title search will help you find out all the facts about the property’s ownership, boundary and access, as held by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).

Remember to look out for easements or covenants that may differ from your understanding of the property, such as rules about who can live in it, car parking and access.”

suggests getting an independent assessment of the property, and the complex as a whole, from an inspector who has professional indemnity insurance and carries out their work in accordance with the New Zealand Property Inspection Standard.

As a prospective buyer, you are entitled to three sets of information from the seller, Lampen-Smith says. These are: 1.

A pre-contract disclosure statement, which the seller provides before entering into an agreement for sale and purchase; A pre-settlement disclosure statement, which the seller provides after entering the agreement for sale and purchase but before settlement of the sale; An additional disclosure statement, in which the buyer may request some or all of the information the seller is required to provide.

“These statements help prospective buyers learn more about the property and the rights and responsibilities they will be signing up for if they purchase it. However, they do not always provide the full picture,” LampenSmith says.

Becoming a unit title holder means you automatically become a member of the complex’s body corporate, which consists of all the unit owners acting as a group.

A body corporate has a number of responsibilities relating to keeping the property in good order, organising and maintaining insurance, and making sure owners keep to the rules as set under the Unit Titles Act 2010, such as complying with all laws and particular requirements around noise and pet ownership, for example, and keeping their individual property in good order.

Each unit title holder pays a set annual amount into a fund that looks after insurance, maintenance and other costs. You should be provided with a copy of the complex’s body corporate rules in the pre-contract disclosure pack. Read these carefully, as they can limit what you may or may not do with the unit you are interested in.

Each body corporate has an elected chairperson (who must own a property in the complex).

A body corporate also must have a Long Term Maintenance Fund (LTMF) and a plan for dealing with any issues that will affect all the members, such as large-scale remedial works e.g. upgrade lifts

The Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA) recommends asking for a further set of information about the body corporate to understand the financial position of the complex as a whole. Ask the vendor (or the selling agent) for a copy of the minutes for all body corporate general and extraordinary meetings for the last three years, plus financial statements and audit reports for the same period.

Find out if there are any unpaid body corporate fees attached to the property you are looking to buy.

“It’s also worth chatting to other unit owners within the complex to see how the body corporate operates,” LampenSmith says.

Request to see the current Long Term Maintenance Plan (LTMP) and examine it carefully. These plans must be prepared for a mandatory minimum of 10 years and be reviewed every two years – it pays to be cautious if the current LTMP is near the end of its term, especially if the complex is in a poor state of repair. You’ll want to ensure the LTMF has the funds required to finance the ongoing expected repairs and

Plant fruit trees. If you’re keen to freshen up your back yard with some nice smart lawn, now’s the time to prepare the soil. Give it a good rake (be sure to add any leaves or pruning to your compost), level it off and get ready to apply your grass seed and fertisliser.

How do you know when to do this? Once the soil temperature has started rising – that’s the time to apply your grass seed.

And, how do you know when the soil temperature is rising? That’s easy – when you find you’re mowing your lawns more often than not – the soil temperature has increased.

You should be finishing off your rose pruning around now. Hoe out winter weeds now before they get growing in spring, you’ll save yourself a lot of work.

Rosemary and lemon chicken with roasted vegetable and orzo salad Serves 4 500g Tegel Fresh Chicken Skinless Thighs, trimmed of visible fat 2T lemon juice 2t olive oil 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 shallot, very finely chopped 2t finely chopped fresh rosemary 1t finely grated lemon zest Roasted vegetable and orzo salad: 1 large red onion, cut into wedges 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 2 courgettes, diagonally sliced 1 bunch asparagus, ends trimmed or 150g green beans, blanched 1T olive oil 1T chopped fresh rosemary 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

2T balsamic vinegar 1C orzo 1/4 C chopped fresh parsley 2T fresh basil leaves ■ Cut 4 deep slits in each Tegel Fresh Chicken Skinless Thighs.

Place into a shallow dish. Combine the lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, shallot, rosemary and lemon zest. Pour over the chicken and toss to coat. Season with black pepper. Cover and refrigerate for one hour.

■ Heat a large frying pan over medium heat. Cook the chicken for 4 to 5 minutes on each side or until it is brown and cooked through.

■ Serve with the roast vegetable and orzo salad and a green salad.

■ Salad: Preheat the oven to 200°C.

■ Combine the red onion, red pepper, yellow pepper, courgettes and asparagus, if using, in a large bowl. Add the olive oil, rosemary and garlic and mix well to combine. Toss to coat evenly then place in a large shallow oven dish. Roast for 30 minutes, or until the vegetables are golden and tender. Remove from the oven, stir in the balsamic vinegar then set aside to cool.

■ Meanwhile, cook the orzo following the packet directions. Drain, rinse under cold water and cool.

■ Combine the roast vegetables, orzo, blanched green beans (if using) and herbs. Toss well.

■ Serve warm with the rosemary and lemon chicken thighs.

Two visiting groups took to the Hampstead School stage to entertain students and share a taste of their culture. The Kahurangi Maori Dance Theatre dazzled students with an exciting performance, along with Japanese students from Ashburton College’s sister school Tokorozawa Kita, who stopped by assembly to perform a fun dance and say hello. The Japanese students also took part in classes where they showed students origami, calligraphy, language and games.

A taste of the Cook Islands Last week was Cook Islands Maori Language Week, so Allenton School celebrated in style.

Students created colourful, floral ei (headwear) to adorn their heads throughout the week.

Room 2 also made and sampled ika mata – a traditional raw fish dish.

Logan said: “It was zesty. That was the first time I had fish.”

Holly came to the conclusion that “it was sour but it was delicious”.

Cassidy also recounted that “the first piece made me cry because it was sour but the rest was yummy”.

Lauriston students carve up the slopes Lauriston students kept active over winter by hitting the netball courts and carving up the slopes. Last week, the Lauriston netball team showed off their skills at the Year 5 & 6 winter

tournament. August also kicked off with a successful, wholeschool ski-day up at Mount Hutt, which student Roy Marten captured in an acrostic poem: Snow falling on my helmet.

HINDS SCHOOL

Hinds School’s Big Day Out Hinds School students seized opportunities to take their learning beyond the classroom and into the great outdoors.

Ruby Taylor of Year 3 penned a poem about her time up Mount Hutt during the school’s Big Day Out. “I heard the scratching wind, magic carpet and people laughing.

I felt proud of myself but bored while I was on the magic carpet.

I saw amazing skiing and I saw people on the chairlift.

I wondered if anyone flew away in that cold east wind.”

Thomas Fulton and Angus Hyde also wrote a reflection of their time at Aoraki Mt Cook for senior camp: “Our favourite part of camp was the Mueller Hut walk. There were 2200 stairs to the Sealy Tarns.

“On the way up people kept saying ‘stop’ every five minutes. It was so hard but in the end we got there.

“When we got to the Sealy Tarns they were frozen all over. We decided to have some morning tea. The views looked cool at that spot. I liked the views because you could see the glaciers, Lake Pukaki and the car park with cars that looked like ants, not to mention Mt Cook.

“Then we wanted to go further up so we did. On the way up to the top there were rocks all over the ground and the views were amazing and there were little patches of snow every-where. When we had to stop because it was too icy and snowy to go any further. So we had lunch and took photos of the place.

“Then we started to head back down the mountain which was a lot easier than going up the mountain!”

NETHERBY SCHOOL

Hands-on learning at Netherby Left – Netherby students have been exploring Maori culture in creative, tactile and tasty ways for this term’s Discovery Learning topic. The hands-on programme has got students artmaking, food baking and instrument-shaking as they learn the importance of Maori culture to wider New Zealand.

Off on a spelling bee mission A team for Ashburton Intermediate went to the spelling bee in Timaru. Student Sam Orr put pen to paper to review the experience: “On Wednesday the 28th 9 kids went to the Spelling Bee with Mrs Jemmett, Ms Horton and Ms Farrell. We went to another school’s hall in Timaru. There were a lot of teams there from schools in South Canterbury and Mid Canterbury. All the teams had 3 people in them. There were 10 rounds of questions including Spelling words, Dictionary skills, Country

of Origin and Root Words.

There was a total of 100 questions and most teams scored between 80-100 points. My team got a total of 96 along with 3 other teams. This was the top score in the quiz so we had to have a playoff with the other 3 teams.

Everyone got the first 2 right but our team and 2 others got the word veterinarian wrong so we got 2nd equal. It was a great night and we were very close to winning but unfortunately we didn’t. Well done to our fantastic competitors.”

It is not often that a deal can deliver a Grand Slam in three different contracts, but this one from Saturday’s All Grades tournament at the Ashburton Bridge Club can do just that.

The best score comes from a No Trump contract, although either Hearts or Clubs are much safer.

Dealer, East will pass, some Souths may open 1 Club with 11 points and a 5 card suit; many will choose not to, leaving North to open 1 Heart.

East may compete with 1 Spade, and if that happens South must now indicate his points with either 2 Clubs or 3 Hearts.

Should East not bid the 1 Spade South has 3 options – 1 Spade, 2 Clubs or 3 Hearts, as a response.

Whether the final contract is a Slam or Game, the outcome depends upon finding both the Club Q and Heart Q in the correct hand. It is an added challenge when the finesse against both Queens can be taken either way, as is possible in this case.

The fact that the Heart Q drops under either the A or K gives a very clear picture of the hands.

For the Declarers who got it right, the ensuing 13 tricks from a combined 29 high card points was a very pleasing result.

The August meeting of the Ashburton Writers’ Group was held recently.

Rae gave a report on the recent very successful Short Story and Poetry Competition for children, there had been 129 entries.

The prize giving ceremony was held at the Ashburton Museum and attended by the Mayor who gave out the prizes.

The Assignment for the meeting was “Mirror, Mirror. What if your mirror could talk to you” Members wrote of Wellington Exhibition visit, ancestors, answered without a sound.

The instant exercise was to start with “Who had been in my house? Who had left a receipt on the table” Members wrote of considerate burglar, groceries, rope and rubbish bags, missing money.

The meeting concluded at 2.45pm with a punctuation exercise and the serving of afternoon tea.

The September assignment is to incorporate three words in a story – carrot, hedgehog and ancestor.

Ashburton Friendship & Entertainment Club Our biennial visit to the Oamaru Savage Club was held on Sunday August 6.

A good muster departed from the Savage Club Hall at 10.00am in McKeich Bus Lines luxury coach, driven by our member Craig McKeich.

As has been the custom in previous years, our lunch stop was at the Waimate Hotel where the management supplied us with a magnificent assortment of food.

After being well fed & watered, we were on the road again arriving at the Oamaru Silver Band Rooms about 1.30pm where a number of the Oamaru members were waiting to greet us outside the hall with many more already seated inside.

Our President John and Oamaru’s Chief Bob Winter officiated, and following the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem, the programme, presented by the Ashburton Club, commenced.

After a most enjoyable afternoon, we were on the way home arriving in Ashburton at 6.40pm.

President Marjorie welcomed members and introduced speaker Helen Gallagher who had been on a trip to India having read about it in Threads magazine.

Delhi was first stop. Airport and traffic chaotic.

Horns tooting all the time. Visited House of Parliament and Mosques. Ten stories up in hotel but no view because of smog.

Mosques where prayers are called 5 times a day. Had Rickshaw ride in Old Delhi and saw Gandhi Monument.

Went to Agra by train dogs and cows on street and open sewers. Sealed bottle water and lots of sanitiser used. Visited the Taj Mahal, beautiful building over four years to build.

On to Srinagar in Kashmir. Stayed in house boat on Lake Dal getting there by Gondola, had lovely meals. Visited cottage industries. Crewl work weaving and pashmina stoles, next to Calcutta and more Mosques and cottage industries.

A truly exciting adventure.

Drama Circle Another afternoon for the Drama Circle to entertain members of our Club.

Readings from Jean, Joan, Janet and Betty all different, but amusing so lots of laughter. In the Sketch entitled Half and Half, Joan, Judith and Betty read each cast well.

Pike the Mistress of the Manor (Joan), has a housemaid (Judith) who takes a little longer than normal to understand, and the cook (Betty) whose husband is in prison, not what the Mistress wants to know or hear about.

After much discussion what will happen when he is released it was Pike that had the last say.

The afternoon went all too quickly and was enjoyed by the members.

Music Circle Having no outside entertainment for Friday, the Music circle entertained about 20 members with a video of Daniel O’Donnell singing in concert in USA. It turned out a popular choice as most know him and enjoy his relaxed easy manner. A few had seen him in concert and one

Members of the MSA golf section have just returned from a fantastic two week golfing holiday in Coolangatta, Australia.

We played on some great courses such as Arundel Hills, The Colonial, Byron Bay, Tweed Heads, Robina Woods and Murwillumba with all courses having fast greens, a lot of water and up to 80 bunkers which made for some high scoring and a lot of lost balls. member had been lucky enough to meet him in person.

While we had afternoon tea we had Solo Mio playing in the background which brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close.

Arts and Crafts We were told we were in for something very different for our Arts and Crafts afternoon and what an understatement that was.

We were blown away by what Judith Rogers had put together for her daughter’s wedding as she did not want fresh or artificial flowers for her bouquets.

Judith began by taking jewellery apart and rewiring each individual piece to make into 3 bouquets.

With so much jewellery left over, Judith took on the mammoth job of making a centre piece for each table in different colours.

She also added “bling” as Judith calls it, to the Bride and Bridesmaids frocks and the Brides tiara.

The hours of time consuming work put into it all, was amazing and no doubt original.

When Judith passed the pieces around most decided they wouldn’t have the eyesight or patience to take on such a big job.

June Bonisch thanked Judith and presented her with a small gift.

Afternoon tea was served and brought a very interesting afternoon to a close.

Coronation/Phoenix Target shooting clubs So, the National Indoor Championships held at the weekend produced two New Zealand Champions to add to the already impressive list of club achievements.

The weather played its part with temperatures between 22 and 26 degrees every day. Each golf day was followed by a happy hour which included nibbles and prize giving for the day’s competition.

The free days were spent catching up with family and friends as well as a boat cruise up the Tweed River and a bus trip to Santanury Cove.

The overall golf competition was won by Bernie Lile from Taranaki closely followed

by Stewart Dunlop and Murray Young.

The ladies competition was easily won by Pat Bell with Marilyn Bennett coming in second.

There was a special room challenge with Kay Fox, Gary and Steve Stratford taking out the main prize.

A big thanks must go to Trish Cates, Lindsay Jackson, Charlie and Elaine Reid for organising the trip and making sure that everything ran smoothly.

Michaela Smith is now the New Zealand C grade champion and Shania Harrison-Lee is the D grade champion.

Lanelle McArthur finished 2nd in A grade confirming her position as one of the top juniors in the Country.

Congratulations girls, you are a credit to your club.

Tuesday July 4 we celebrated the 70th anniversary of the founding of Save the Children in New Zealand by Minnie Havelaar with a luncheon catered by Sandy Smith at the Masonic Lodge.

Recent donations of rugs and knitting have been made to Operation Coverup, Plunket and Women’s Refuge.

Anyone wishing to donate wool can leave it in a specially marked container at Community House on Cass Street.

The group’s next fundraising activity will be a “Pop-Up” stall in the Denim Den\ former ANZ Bank area on East Street on Friday August 18 at 8.30am.

We will have baby and children’s hand knitting for sale, together with a selection of baking and popular items from their shop such as souvenirs, cards and aprons.

We will also be holding our usual stall on Boulevard Day in September and it is hoped to have this year’s Christmas Cards available then.

College basketballers falter The Ashburton College Senior Girls basketball team travelled to Christchurch Girls’ High School for round 10 of the Whelan Trophy on Tuesday night.

In need of a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, College unfortunately came up short, with CGHS securing the match 59-41.

College was in the mix from

the tip-off, competing strongly against a talented Girls’ High line up.

College guards Grace Adams and Sammy Arnold were tenacious on defence, forcing regular turnovers and creating offensive opportunities for College’s forwards.

College forward Ashlee Straw-

bridge battled strongly in the paint to pick up 11 first half points and ensure College only trailed by two at the half, 25-23.

Although their defensive efforts continued to upset CGHS’s offensive flow, the College girls struggled to find the bottom of the bucket in second half, allowing Girls High to pull away and

record the 59-42 victory.

Strawbridge top scored for College with 18 points, while fellow forward Sophie Adams battled through some early foul trouble for eight points.

Next week sees the College girls, now 5-4, travel to Cashmere High School (2-8) for the last round of their regular season competition.

By Angelo Risso Stephen Kearney admits several of his Warriors troops are a tad lucky to retain their roles for Sunday’s NRL clash with Canberra – but believes wholesale squad changes remain unfeasible.

Issac Luke has dropped to the bench for this weekend’s match in Auckland after a horror showing in the Warriors’ 26-10 loss to Newcastle last week. Versatile young gun Nathaniel Roache will instead wear the No.9 jumper.

Playing well heading into the NRL finals is just as important as winning the minor premiership according to Storm star Billy Slater. The competition-leaders only need two more victories from the remaining four rounds to seal the JJ Giltinan Shield and can bank one on Saturday against the second-placed Roosters. Slater says while finishing top two is significant, form is key. “The position on the table is important come this time of the year but it’s not the be-all and end-all, it’s just as important to be playing good football and that’s what our focus is now”.

With the Warriors officially out of NRL finals contention, Kearney now has the opportunity to ditch underperforming players and blood young talent – but has elected not to do so, barring Luke’s demotion.

He said yesterday that he’d considered wielding the axe – having lashed out at some players for not trying against the last-placed Knights – but felt better options were few and far between.

The club’s reserve-grade side currently sit third on their ladder,

but the Warriors youth squad has struggled throughout 2017 and languish in last place.

“Yeah, there are a couple lads that are lucky,” Kearney said.

“Again, if I thought there were better options, as I keep saying – I would certainly make those changes. I’m not going to change my view, regardless of the situation that we find ourselves in. I’ll make the necessary changes I think will be of benefit.”

Despite Kearney’s processdriven approach to his maiden

campaign in the Warriors hot seat, the Aucklanders have been typically flaky and currently sit in 12th place, with just seven wins from 20 matches.

A number of players will depart the club at the end of the campaign, including seasoned first-graders Ryan Hoffman and Kieran Foran, as well as the likely exits of Bodene Thompson, Jacob Lillyman and Charlie Gubb.

Monte makes good progress Nymph Monte made his mark at stakes level last season and the six-year-old will be on the trail of higher honours this preparation.

The Listed Metropolitan Trophy Handicap winner took a step closer to a new campaign at Waverley on Tuesday when he finished a tidy third in an open 1000m heat.

“It brought him on again and he did it all under his own steam,” part-owner and trainer Grant Nicholson said. “He’ll trial again on August 22 at Foxton and then head to Hastings.

“At this stage, he will run on the first day in the open mile and then into the open 2000m handicap on the second day before the Livamol Classic.

“He’s a pretty clean-winded horse and two runs should have him right for the Group One. “We just hope the tracks will be good for him.”

The son of Tavistock has a handy record at Hawke’s Bay, having won there over 2100m and weighed in a further three times from five appearances.

Nicholson will now have a re-think on the programme of Nymph Monte’s half-brother Artaxerxes, whose seasonal debut has been delayed by the abandonment of today’s Woodville races.

Meanwhile, the three-year-old Reliably Perky is expected to come into her own this season when she gets up to a mile and beyond.

“The more ground the better for her,” Nicholson said.

“We think a bit of the filly and, like most Reliable Mans, she’s going to need further to show what she can do.”

Joy for Dalgety Canterbury trainer Cran Dalgety didn’t have to wait long for his Victorian fortunes to change in an Australasian Breeders Crown 2YO Fillies Heat at Shepparton on Tuesday night. The Dalgety-trained second favourite Our Bettor Joy charged home along the sprint lane for driver Anthony Butt to defeat front-running favourite Molly Kelly (Chris Alford) in the $A10,000 heat. Our Bettor Joy, a daughter of champion sire Bettor’s Delight and Joyfulbelle, won going away at the line by 2.5 metres.

McGrath ready for spring Canterbury trainer Nigel McGrath is just 10 wins away from reaching the notable milestone of 500 career training wins and will soon launch an impressive spring racing team. All Blacks determined to lift skill levels The All Blacks story of the last five years or so has tended to follow the same plot in big tests, where they battle away for 80 minutes, emerging as victors on the back of their superior ability to execute the basic skills.

Test football has developed to the point where a blanket can be thrown over the top teams in terms of their set-piece ability, fitness and collision work, and the difference so often – what separates the All Blacks – is their higher skill level to execute pass and catch at critical times.

How many times since 2012 have opposition coaches lamented the fact that their side didn’t have the same skill level as the All Blacks?

How many times has a killer pass, or creative offload been the thing that wins it for the All Blacks?

It has become routine for the All Blacks to leave everyone in awe of their skill level, which is why it was a surprise to see them struggle in that area against the British & Irish Lions.

For the first time since 2011, the All Blacks didn’t have the magical touch they needed.

Hamish McNeill’s loyalty was repaid at Riccarton yesterday when he celebrated the biggest victory of his career aboard Ready Eddie in the Grand National Hurdles.

The 21-year-old Scottish jockey had made a commitment to ride the Awapuni fencer in the Hospitality New Zealand Canterburysponsored feature prior to events of last Saturday.

McNeill was true to his word, even though he partnered Go Go Gonzo to a runaway win in the Sydenham Hurdles on the opening day of the carnival and the Laura Knight-trained Ready Eddie proved worthy of his rider’s confidence.

“I’m on cloud nine, this is what dreams are made of,” McNeill said.

“It’s been a hard last couple of years with injuries, but this makes up for it.

“The horse gave me absolutely everything.”

It has been a memorable winter for McNeill as he has also won the Manawatu Steeplechase aboard The Oysterman, who is trained by Knight’s partner Stephen Nickalls.

His pre-race plan with Ready Eddie worked to perfection and after settling in the last two, they steadily picked up ground along the fence from the 1000 metre mark to have the free-going Go Go Gonzo in their sights at the top of the straight.

They made the half gaps, found the space but the pass didn’t stick.

The hands weren’t good, the timing not quite right and the chance lost.

These things obviously matter in tests of that magnitude where there is so little between the teams in every other facet.

“Our skill set didn’t stand up under pressure ... it’s normally a very good part of our game,” All Blacks selector Grant Fox lamented to Radio Sport. “We have to address perhaps doing more skill work than we’ve been doing.”

By highlighting the need for a greater emphasis to be placed on skill work, there was perhaps within that a tacit admission that the All Blacks have missed the influence of Mick Byrne who moved on after the 2015 World Cup. Byrne was the All Blacks specialist skills coach from 2005 and he was instrumental in lifting the accuracy and breadth of skills within the squad.

A former Australian Rules play-

Mick Byrne er, he brought new and innovative ideas about kicking, aerial work and catching to the extent that the All Blacks became world leaders in all of those fields.

But he shifted back to Australia in 2016 and not surprisingly was persuaded to join the Wallabies set-up in the same role he had held with the All Blacks.

And that makes life intriguing ahead of the Bledisloe Cup. Now the All Blacks have to find a way to sharpen their work and improve their execution.

Responsibility for that will now fall on the shoulders of Ian Foster and Wayne Smith, the two assistants having picked up the

work Byrne had been doing.

It will be a test of the All Blacks coaching team’s ability to successfully prioritise what they need to do ahead of the first test in Sydney on August 19.

Can they bring the skill level back to the boil and instil in their side the confidence and sharpness they will need to express themselves against the Wallabies?

And, conversely, what effect will Byrne have had in the other camp?

He’s been with the Wallabies for more than a year and they have also had the luxury of being in training for an extended period due to their teams not being involved in the Super Rugby playoffs.

There is an expectation that Byrne can make some rapid improvements for the Australians.

The All Blacks have to believe that they will encounter a Wallabies side that will show in Sydney an improved ability to play with the ball and convert half chances through creative execution.

It could be a classic battle of skills, with no feel at this stage as to who will emerge as the winner.

The stage is set for three sides to battle it out for the best positions heading in to the semi-finals of Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier competition.

Celtic have already confirmed they will finish top of the log at the end of tonight’s play, and will be wanting to keep their form up when they take on winless Southern.

In what is likely to be the most

important match of the evening, Methven will face off against Ashburton College.

The AshColl girls currently sit in second place through having a superior goal differential to Hampstead, while Methven sit only one point behind in fourth.

With neither side likely to be wanting to face Celtic, who comfortably beat them in the previous weeks, the heat will be on to secure the four points.

Also wanting to keep out of the Celtic firing line will be Hampstead, who have found the right time to hit form.

Unbeaten in three matches, they face a United side who are already consigned to playing off for fifth or six, but will still want to show their talent and should not be taken lightly.

In the grade below, things are tight at the top of the table, with three points covering the top three.

Leading the pack is Rakaia on 14 points, who face bottom of the table Southern B. Closely behind them on 12 points is the Hampstead B side, who will play Ashburton College B, who sit one point behind them.

The final match of the round is the Celtic derby, with the B and C sides clashing, with the C side currently holding bragging rights with a two point advantage.
